Study Programme Overview The course consists of five BTEC units covering an introduction to working in the sports, fitness and exercise industries from a practical and basic theory perspective. This will give you the knowledge and skills required for progressing onto higher level courses and jobs such as Leisure Attendant, Sports Coaching and Fitness Instructor. Equipment On enrolment, you will be required to buy a Nike sports kit package consisting of a tracksuit, polo shirt, t-shirt and shorts for use during all practical activity sessions. Entry Requirements You do not need any formal qualifications, just the interest and ambition of a career in sport. All learners will be interviewed by staff to assess their suitability.

How will I be Assessed? There are new formal external assessments on BTEC courses, but learners are also assessed using a variety of different methods such as presentations, observations and coursework based IT tasks, graded to a pass grade. Some units have practical-based assignments that require visits to local facilities to participate in activities.

Study Programme Overview This Sports Performance Academy is for those who have a talent for football. The academy is delivered alongside educational qualifications and places are subject to maintaining the required academic standard and attendance. The Academy is aimed at boys and girls and run in partnership with Bolton Wanderers Community Trust with access to professional coaching and participation in the AOC Sport College leagues. This is a chance to enjoy your studies and explore your competitive edge. A ‘work hard play hard’ ethos is expected of all students and a balanced approach to the sporting/academic demands of the programme is essential. The Level 1 course provides a comprehensive introduction into the health, fitness and sports industry. You’ll investigate how the body works, and how to plan and take part in improving your own fitness and that of others. You’ll also learn how to lead sporting activities as well as assist in organising and running a sports event. Focus will be given to exploring job opportunities and the skills required to work in the industry, such as assessing risks and hazards, and dealing with accidents and emergency situations. Work experience is also an integral part of our study programmes, enabling you to gain essential exposure to the world of work.

Entry Requirements To do this course, we ask that you have GCSE grades 3-1 and that you demonstrate a commitment to sport. We will also invite you to come for an interview and ask to see a satisfactory school reference.

Study Programme Overview The Bolton College Fitness Academy is a unique opportunity for enthusiastic young people who are interested in becoming Fitness Instructors and Personal Trainers. The course is aimed at people who already attend gyms and aspire to work in gym environments, or may have gym instructor qualifications that they wish to add to. Once you have completed Year 1 of the Fitness Academy you will be equipped with a portfolio of qualifications which meet the needs of both local and national employers and you can progress onto our Level 3 Personal Training Diploma or an Apprenticeship. An example of additional qualifications you will obtain in your 1st year are: • Indoor Cycling Instructor • Circuit Training Instructor • Suspension Training Instructor (TRX) • First Aid at Work Please note - These are industry ready qualifications and so do not carry any UCAS points, instead, the course focuses on employability.

Entry Requirements You need the ambition of a career in sport and fitness, and will preferably already have achieved Maths and/ or English Language at Grade 4 or above. All learners will be formally interviewed by staff to assess their suitability for the study programme.

How will I be Assessed? There is a formal multiple choice external assessment on the YMCA course, and learners are also assessed using a variety of different methods such as questions sheets, task workbooks and tutor observations. Some units have more practical assignments that require visits to local sports facilities for activities. All coursework also incorporates many aspects of developing your written English and maths capabilities, up to the standards required by employers.

Study Programme Overview This Sports Performance Academy is for those who have a talent for football. What You’ll Learn

The Community Activator Coach Standard will underpin occupations such as an Activator, Sports Coach, Activity Leader, Community Worker or Outreach Officer. Professional recognition: On successful completion of the Standard, all Apprentices will be automatically given CIMSPA (Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity) at Associate Membership level.

The wider sport and activity sector plays an important role in improving the health and wellbeing of the nation and provides a positive environment which supports (especially young) people to grow and develop through sport and physical activity. The Community Activator Coach promotes, delivers and coaches fun, inclusive and engaging activities that help whole communities to change their behaviour, adopt and keep to a physically active lifestyle. Community Activator Coaches are more than activity and sports leaders – they understand communities and customers. They will be equipped with the specialist knowledge needed to effectively work with one customer group, such as inactive teenagers but also be knowledgeable about other inactive customer groups whom they may be expected to work with on occasions.

Entry Requirements

When competent they will be experienced in working with a range of different communities and all kinds of customers who are likely to be defined as inactive, sedentary or not doing enough physical activity in their lives. They also know how to make communities and lives better through physical activity, organised play and sport. The Community Activator Coach will be a positive role model who builds good rapport with customers especially those who are young, inactive, or from low-income and marginalised communities.

Apprentices without Level 1 English and Maths will need to achieve this level and take the test for Level 2 English and maths prior to the end point assessment. There are no formal qualifications required to complete this Apprenticeship but the role requires: • A positive attitude to work, be approachable and a role model

The Community Activator Coach often works alongside youth workers, the police and community safety agencies to make neighbourhoods safer and works alongside health workers to make residents fitter and healthier. The role is a flexible one and individuals can expect to work varied hours, including evenings, weekends and school holidays. Apprenticeship Overview The key role of a Community Sport & Health Officer (CSHO) is to initiate behaviour change in local residents with regards to engagement in sport and physical activity across local communities. By working within and across local organisations individuals will scope, organise and coordinate the delivery of opportunities for local communities to get more physically active. Employers are likely to come from the private, public, charitable and third sector and deliver core business activities in the fields of leisure, sport, youth work, youth justice, outdoor education or public health. A CSHO requires a comprehensive understanding of the principles of behaviour change; an ability to adapt delivery to suit different groups in society; knowledge of how to manage and lead colleagues or volunteers; practical experience of how to develop and devise appropriate sports or physical activity programmes; and the expectations of collaborative work with a network of partners/stakeholders. The role is a flexible one and in this role individuals can expect to work varied hours, including evenings/weekends, and during school holiday periods. It is unlikely individuals will undertake a regular daily work pattern or set of recurring tasks. Tasks might include attendance at meetings, supervising sessions, liaising with partner organisations, designing marketing collateral, updating social media or reporting against project criteria.

Entry Requirements

The role of a Personal Trainer is to coach clients, on a one to one and small group basis towards their health and fitness goals.

Apprentices without Level 1 English and Maths will need to achieve this level and take the test for Level 2 English and maths prior to the end point assessment. There are no formal qualifications required to complete this Apprenticeship but the role requires:

Through the design and provision of creative and personalised exercise programmes and instruction, nutritional advice and overall lifestyle management, Personal Trainers will motivate clients to positively change their behaviour and improve their overall wellbeing by providing specialist, tailored advice within their scope of practice, while always being aware of when to refer clients to relevant appropriate professionals for specialist information and guidance e.g. Physiotherapist, Registered Dietician, Medical Specialist. A comprehensive understanding of business, finance, sales and marketing is also essential to enable the Personal Trainer to build and retain a stable client base. Personal Trainers are typically employed by a fitness or leisure centre or, once qualified, can be self-employed and should expect to work hours that may include evenings, weekends and public holidays.

Apprenticeship Overview

Your employer will set the recruitment and selection criteria for your Apprenticeship. Typically, candidates will have five GCSEs at Grade 4 or equivalent, including English Language and Maths. A keen interest in sport/ coaching would also be desirable.

The Supporting Teaching and Learning in Physical Education and School Sport Apprenticeship is for anyone who wants to work with children, coordinating and delivering school sport, and motivating children to perform to the very best of their abilities.

How will I be Assessed?

With England currently the fifth most unhealthy country in the world, and almost one-quarter of children overweight at the time they start primary school, the provision of physical education is a top priority for today’s Government and a key component of the curriculum for all schools. On this Apprenticeship you will gain the skills needed to plan, deliver, assess and evaluate out-ofschool activities, lunchtime and playtime activities and curriculum PE/physical activity, in partnership with school sports leaders. You will also assist with curriculum support and help manage the OFSTED early years setting.
