You will experience a minimum 30-hour work placement with an employer, allowing you to apply your new skills. You may also engage in employer related projects to help increase your soft skills.
Level 3 Study Programme
You will experience an Industry Placement, completing a high-level project with an employer. This can range from 30 hours to 750 hours depending on the course you are on.
Advice on Securing a Work Placement and Writing a CV
Work experience is a great opportunity to learn about a job or an area of work. This is a key part of your course so it’s important that you lead on securing a placement, finding a suitable employer who can match your aspirations and goals.
You’ll use skills that you might not even know you have and develop new skills that will help you to work better with other people now and in the future.
Completing your work placement will also help you to obtain better grades in projects and assignments and give you an understanding of the career path you have chosen.
Examples of work placements include:
• If you want to be a chef, you could try to find a placement in a restaurant
• If you like travel, try finding a placement with a travel agent
• Thinking a career in finance would suit you? Try to get a placement in a bank.
This may sound quite daunting, but don’t worry - we’ve created a guide to securing a placement and creating a CV. Simply visit: www.bit.ly/secure-placement
Apprenticeship
At all levels you will have a job attracting an Apprenticeship salary, whilst attending College for 20% of the time to study for your technical qualification.
Please note: some courses have different arrangements to meet the professional requirements of their occupations.

English, Maths & Digital Skills
Part of Life’s Essentials
If you completed school with GCSE English and/or Maths grades of 3 or below, you’ll work towards achieving a grade 9 to 4.
Why does it matter?
Employers and universities often require a minimum grade 4 competency in both English and Maths; this is crucial for your personal growth, career prospects, and further education.
I’m
not skilled in English and maths
We believe you can be; our innovative approach has helped hundreds of students achieve GCSE grade 4, and you can too. Can I work towards GCSE grade 9-4 in English and/or Maths?
Absolutely! We’ll support you to progress at your own pace, even if that’s improving one grade at a time.
I’ve already achieved GCSEs grade 9-4 so will I still study English and maths?
Only if you want to, or if it’s necessary for your desired career or higher education – for example, if you’re planning on taking a T Level or progressing to university, you may require a grade 5 or above.
Help, I need extra support with my English and maths!
Extra study sessions are available throughout your College journey - you can pass, and we’ll get you there!
Digital Skills
Our English and maths classes also creatively encourage digital proficiency via audio and visual media; advanced Moodle resources; interactive technology; and access to online book publications.

Supporting your learning & wellbeing
We want you to enjoy every minute of College, both in the classroom and out of it, so we have a range of dedicated support and wellbeing services to ensure that this happens. This includes FREE travel; an exciting programme of extra curricula activities; designated Learning Development Mentors (LDM) to support you in your learning journey; professional and impartial advice and guidance; dedicated one-to-one support for learners with additional learning needs; financial support with the cost of College; plus much more.
Learning & Development Mentors (LDMs)
You’ll have a dedicated LDM and a Work Placement Officer to help you create academic and career plans, in line with your individual needs and goals. Meeting weekly, in group or one-to-one sessions, your LDM will be your key point of contact for help and support.
Your LDM will support you in many ways including:
• Helping you to stay on track with your course
• Exploring further study, career and university options
• Making sure you are prepared to succeed in the world of work
• Supporting your wellbeing so your time at College is successful and happy.
Student Mentors
Working closely with our LDM team we have a friendly team of Wellbeing Mentors who are always on hand to offer one-to-one support outside of the classroom; providing informal confidential mentoring; and where relevant, to help you liaise with a range of external agencies such as health services, social care, youth and restorative services, and wider education services.
For further information you can contact the Wellbeing Team on 01204 482 667.
GCSEs & Digital Skills
Employers and universities usually require candidates to have achieved GCSE 9-4 in English and maths, and for some programmes Science, before they consider offering them a job or a course place. We want everyone to improve their skills in these essential areas, so you’ll continue to study English and Maths up to at least a grade 4 in each subject; the classes also prioritise developing your digital skills, so you’ll improve on these too.
You’ll also have the opportunity to develop skills required by employers.

Inclusion for All
Bolton College is committed to providing equal opportunities in education for all learners and we will do all we can to meet the needs of individuals.
Learners with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities or Anxiety
If you have a special educational need or disability, or anxiety, you should make sure your tutor knows. This is for any special need you have, and it doesn’t matter whether you have an Education, Health & Care Plan (EHCP). For example, you might have a medical condition or find it difficult to travel by yourself. Your education provider - the College - will help you to prepare and plan for your placement, make sure you have the support you need and that the employer knows about your needs, so that any adjustments can be made, if required.
If you need support for your disability at your work placement, staff at College will work with you to design a plan that is right for you. They will also talk to the employer so that they understand your needs and can work with you.
Risk Assessments
In addition to the health and safety policies in the workplace, the College may have completed a risk assessment relating to your disability and personal circumstances. You should be familiar with this. Your employer will also be familiar with it. You can check this with your support contact at College.
