Disclaimer: Every care has been taken to ensure that the information contained within this guide was accurate at the time of printing. Bolton College is constantly evaluating its services to meet the needs of learners; therefore programmes/courses, resources, facilities and delivery methods may be subject to change without prior notice. The Government is currently introducing positive Apprenticeship reform with the creation of Employer Trailblazer Groups, who are developing new Apprenticeship standards. As such, Apprenticeship qualifications may be subject to change. Progress to Success courses are suggested study routes that learners can take, but they also have the chance to take on other opportunities.
It’s an amazing time to join Bolton College, where we continue to introduce the new Gold Standard in advanced technical education, the new T Level qualifications.
We’re an elite College, and part of the University of Bolton Group, offering you a gateway to all of Greater Manchester’s vast range of fantastic opportunities for specialist careers, university degree courses and higher Apprenticeships.
What sets our programmes apart is the opportunity to put the things you learn about your chosen industry into practice in an employment setting, either as an apprentice, through Industry Placements or work experience. Supporting you to be well prepared for these experiences is our highest priority.
Last year, we launched our Employer Academies, bringing employers even closer to you, both in College and in placement activities.
In College, if you give us your best - including good attendance, focus on learning and making the most of the opportunities that we will provide for you – we’ll make sure you reach your full potential, and we’ll support you every step of the way.
During our last inspection, we were graded 2 for ‘Good’ – Ofsted highlighted the fact that our learners develop good employability and personal skills, and that a high proportion progress to Apprenticeships, employment or Higher Education. So whatever your ambitions, you’re in safe hands!
If you’d like some support with choosing your next step, you can attend an Open Event – see page 4 or call the team on 01204 482 182.
Our Study Programmes and Apprenticeships are the first step towards your dream career.
Use your qualifications to secure that first job, or progress to university to study for a related degree in your chosen profession.

It’s an amazing time to join Bolton College where the Gold Standard in advanced technical education, T Level qualifications, are being offered.
T Levels are technical qualifications that are equivalent to three A Levels. The two-year courses have been developed with employers and businesses so that the content meets the needs of industry and prepares you for work.
T Levels allow you to apply what you learn in the classroom to a sector-specific Industry Placement, accounting for 20% of your course, and opening the door into skilled employment, degree education and Higher Apprenticeships.
Applying for university; writing a personal statement; sitting a job interview - in these situations, participation in our enrichment programme will prove you have professional and technical skills outside of the classroom and are a successful, well-rounded person.
…we’re part of the University of Bolton Group so you’ll benefit from their enrichment programme too, with subject-specific activities and taster sessions - just what you need for progression to uni!
Departmental enrichment is specific to the curriculum you’re studying, enhancing what you’ve learnt in the classroom.
Activities include inspiring trips, meetings with industry experts, and visits to leading companies in your sector, giving you a CV or personal statement to wow!
You’ll benefit from cross-College enrichment activities, allowing you to mix and make friends with students from other departments. You’ll enjoy activities and sports to improve your health, wellbeing and fitness - these fall into five categories:
Fitness sessions, football, dance and more.
Volunteering and fundraising opportunities.
Quizzes, online or in College, and more.
Meeting other students for sessions that aim to relax and ease stress, for example Colour & Chill sessions.
Tasters, workshops and visits to enhance your learning.

What’s special about Bolton College is that we are solely focused on vocational learning. All of our courses engage with local businesses, ensuring that the skills you learn are completely up to date.
You can expect to spend time with an employer, either on short work experience, an extended Industry Placement, or you might prefer to learn while you are working through our Apprenticeship route. Whichever you choose, you can be confident that when you leave us, you will have the latest skills and a good understanding of the work culture of your chosen career.
What this means for you:
You will complete a Youth Social Action Project, developing your entrepreneurial skills and contributing to life in Bolton.
You will experience a minimum 30-hour work placement with an employer, allowing you to apply your new skills.
You will experience an extended Industry Placement, completing a high-level project with an employer, for 20% of your course.
Work experience is a great opportunity to learn about a job or an area of work.
This is a key part of your course so it’s important that you lead on securing a placement, finding
a suitable employer who can match your aspirations and goals.
You’ll use skills that you might not even know you have and develop new skills that will help you to work better with other people now and in the future.
Completing your work placement will also help you to obtain better grades in projects and assignments and give you an understanding of the career path you have chosen.
Examples of work placements include:
• If you want to be a chef, you could try to find a placement in a restaurant
• If you like travel, try finding a placement with a travel agent
• Thinking a career in finance would suit you? Try to get a placement in a bank.
This may sound quite daunting, but don’t worry - we’ve created a guide to securing a placement and creating a CV. Simply visit: www.bit.ly/secure-placement
At all levels you will have a job attracting an Apprenticeship salary, whilst attending College for 20% of the time to study for your t echnical qualification.
Please note: some courses have different arrangements to meet the professional requirements of their occupations.
Employers and universities choose candidates with good English, maths and digital skills, so you’ll continue to develop these crucial skills to the standards required.
If you left school with GCSE English and/or Maths at grade 3 or below, you’ll study English and maths to gain that vital GCSE grade 9-4, giving you the underpinning skills to achieve your potential in your vocational course, employment and further learning.
What if I don’t get my GCSE grade 9-4 in English and/or Maths at school?
Employers and universities want grade 4 abilities in English and maths so you’ll work towards achieving these qualifications at College until you gain a GCSE grade 4 or equivalent.
What’s the point?
Life and work are much easier if you have good English and maths skills; you’ll be more confident and financially better off.
I’m no good at English and maths!
We think you can be and we’ll prove it; thanks to our fresh approach, hundreds of our students have achieved GCSE grade 4 and you can too!
So I can work towards achieving my GCSE grade 9-4 in English and/or Maths?
Yes! We’ll encourage and support you to work at your own pace, even if that’s improving a grade at a time.
I’ve already achieved GCSEs grade 9-4 so will I still study English and maths?
Only if you want to, or if you need a Level 3 for your desired career or higher education course. You will still be stretched and challenged in your English & maths in your vocational subject, encouraging you to develop these skills further.
I need extra support with my English and maths, can I get some help?
Yes, you’ve the ability to pass and we’ll get you there! We have extra study support sessions available throughout your time at College. Work-related learning, work experience and preparation
for work play key roles in your programmes; English and maths will be embedded into these too.
Our English and maths classes also prioritise digital skills development in creative ways:
• Audio and visual media to promote independent learning and to make classroom learning fun
• Highly-developed Moodle resource area within the College website, including access to Maths Watch and GCSE Pod
• Interactive technology via the use of tablets, laptops, digital apps and interactive software/websites in class
• Audio and visual access to online book publications
If you’re planning to take a T Level or progress to university, and you have a grade 4 in English or maths, please check the requirements for your next step. If you do require a grade 5 or above, please speak to your Learning Development Mentor who will ensure you get on to an appropriate GCSE course.
Good English and maths skills don’t just help in the classroom. proficiency in these subjects improves your communication skills and allows you to understand money as well as the world around you.
I started at grade 1 and I’ve just passed my Maths GCSE resit with a grade 5!
My tutor was brilliant and I also attended the College’s maths study support sessions, which helped.
Higher levels of literacy and numeracy are linked to better health and wellbeing.
People with good GCSE grades in English and maths earn approximately £2,000 more per year than those who don’t!
