You’ll soon be making an important decision about your education and your future. What you do next is important and we’re here to help you every step of the way. We’re the number one General Further Education College in Greater Manchester for 16-18 achievement rates for higher level qualifications. Ofsted also agrees; during our last Ofsted inspection we were graded 2 for ‘Good’. Ofsted highlighted the fact that our learners develop good employability and personal skills and that a high proportion progress to Apprenticeships, employment or Higher Education. Here at the College you can select one of two pathways to Higher Education or employment, a Full-time Study Programme or an Apprenticeship. If you decide to study full-time at College, we have a great range of study programmes covering a variety of professions and occupations. As you study for your chosen career, we will help you with essential work experience opportunities. Our team of Learning Mentors will support you throughout. If you choose the Apprenticeship route, we have a wide range of careers for you to choose from. You will start work with an employer and earn while you learn, supported throughout by our team of Work Based Tutors. Whichever route you choose to take, we will provide you with the skills and qualifications that employers or universities demand. If you need a little extra help, we’ve got your back. They will help you with financial support if needed for travel and meals. They’ll help you excel and build your skills and confidence. Enrichment Enrichment activities offer students the opportunity to do something different to their usual classroom and workshop-based activities and add a different dimension and value to their studies. Cross-college enrichment activities include internal College events such as Freshers’ Fair, Zorb Balling and the Diversity Festival. Organised trips and activities outside of College include a variety of educational, cultural and fun events. These have included trips to Media City, Hollywood Bowl, Liverpool Slavery Museum, Chester Zoo, Arley Hall & Gardens, Alton Towers and Manchester Museum of Science & Industry. Our learners have enjoyed performances at The Octagon, The Lowry and the Northern Ballet. Trampolining, paint balling at Douglas Valley, Challenge4Change team building and footgolf have also kept our learners busy.

Whether football, badminton or cricket is your thing, there are a huge range of sports and activities to improve your health, wellbeing and fitness. There are daily sports sessions or you can join and train with a College team for football or basketball. The library staff offer activities such as how to use Prezi for course presentations, art and craft activities and book clubs. In addition to all of these activities, there are chances to enrich your studies with industry visits, enterprise activities and College and regional competitions, where you can show off the skills you have learnt on your course. You’ll also benefit from visits to Jobs Fairs and Higher Education Fairs, helping you to decide your next steps whilst visits from speakers to your classroom, who are experts in the field you’ll be working in, can tell you what it’s like to work in your sector, giving you a real feel for your chosen industry.

English & Maths

Part of Life’s Essentials Dedicated English and maths classes make up a large part of all study programmes, and these skills are also embedded into every teaching session on vocational courses. If you left school with a GCSE English and/or Maths at Grade 3 (D) or below you’ll study English and Maths to gain a GCSE Grade 9-4 (A*-C).

FAQs 1. I’m no good at English and maths. What’s the point? We think you can be and we can prove it. The teaching and learning approach to English and maths at College is very different from school - and it works! 2. What if I don’t get my GCSE grade 9-4 (A*-C) in English and/or Maths at school? You will continue to study to achieve these qualifications as part of your study programme, until you gain a Grade 4 (C) or equivalent. 3. So I can work towards achieving my GCSE grade 9-4 (A*-C) in English and/or Maths? Yes! You’ll study in English and/or maths classes if you haven’t already gained a grade 4 (C) or above. You will be enrolled on a GCSE course and learners

studying in foundation learning will have the option of studying Functional Skills.

6. I need extra support with my English and maths. Can I get some help?

Yes, you have the ability to pass and our tutors will get you there!

They’re not just about knowledge of English and maths. They’re about using this knowledge in real-life, helping you to operate confidently and independently. 5. I’ve already achieved GCSEs grade 9-4 (A*-C). Will I still study English and maths? Only if you want to, or if you need a Level 3 in English or maths for your desired career or HE course. We would encourage you to continue to develop your skills in maths by attending our Bright Sparks programme, which is the Level 3 Certificate in Mathematical Studies which will give you the edge in the jobs market.

If you have difficulties or disabilities, English and maths will form part of your programme - we’ll help you to develop at your own pace and level. Work-related learning, work experience and preparation for work play key roles in your programmes; English and maths will be embedded into these too. If you’re planning to go to university and have a grade 4 (bottom C) in English or maths please check your university requirements. If you do require a grade 5 (top C) please speak to your Learning Development Mentor who will ensure you get on to an appropriate course.

We do a mixture of presentations and group work and our teachers made sure we were fully prepared for our exams by letting us practice our techniques using mock GCSE papers. I’m going to use my Maths GCSE to study Business Management at university.’

Industrial Placements Some Level 3 learners may be fortunate to be able to participate in the Transition Industrial Placement experience which will become the standard for Level 3 vocational courses, soon to become the new T Level qualifications, beginning in 2020. What this means for you: • The opportunity of a 45-60 day placement • A placement in a setting where you can develop your occupational skills • The support of a Career Coach who will support and visit you throughout the placement The benefits of work experience are well established; you will get the opportunity to develop your skills in the real world as well as learning about the attitudes and behaviours necessary for a successful career. A longer work placement has the additional benefits of: • Allowing you to see through a substantial project with an employer • Allowing you to develop and sustain working relationships over time • The employer having the time to see your full potential as a possible employee The College participated in a pilot study for the new placements last year and the outcomes were very positive. A number of learners were successful in securing Apprenticeships or jobs to take up at the end of their courses and most learners felt that it had developed their skills and understanding of their chosen profession.

Work Experience This programme will give you the skills and confidence to bag your dream job! We’ll provide you with an authentic, hands-on experience of your chosen career, plus the chance to gain essential life skills. Work experience also has a hugely positive impact on your employability and provides you with an understanding of the structure and reality of working life. Throughout the programme, you’ll receive feedback and coaching which will help you to make informed decisions about your future.

Foundation Learning Supported Internships Supported Internships are a study programme primarily based with an employer in the local area.

Foundation Learning offers new opportunities with smaller class sizes, an informal approach to teaching and focused support. You’ll get to sample different vocational course areas before choosing the right one for you.

Supported Internships enable young people aged 16-24 with an Education, Health & Care Plan to learn and develop skills needed within the workplace. Alongside time with the employer young people will complete a personalised study programme to develop English, maths and employability skills.

Skills for Independence - for learners with learning difficulties & disabilities Skills for Independence provides the opportunity for learners with a range of learning difficulties and disabilities to progress their life experience, confidence and maths and English. This is achieved through further learning, developing independence and completing work experience. Our programmes provide a range of opportunities to personalise progression to the next level. The programmes focus on developing employability skills, independence, maths and English, and enterprise skills – with ‘Enterprise Week’ and competitions running throughout the year. Embedded in the programmes are vocational tasters, enrichment activities and a work experience placement.

Quiet Room

If you have any personal issues or worries about your studies, speaking with a Counsellor gives you the opportunity to talk things through privately with someone who will listen to you without making judgements.

There is a Quiet Room at College for staff and students to use. It is open to people of all religious faiths for prayer, and to those who have none for quiet contemplation/meditation.

Our College Counsellor operates throughout the year.

Guide to Admissions The Admissions Team work with all academic departments to ensure that applicants receive a smooth and efficient service, helping them to make the easiest possible move to College. Here are a few frequently asked questions and answers.

1. When will I hear something about my application? We’ll confirm we have received your application then text/email you with your interview date and a link to book your chosen time. You can also call us to book an interview time once you have received your invite. Important: please keep your mobile number and email address up-to-date. 2. How often do interviews take place? Every subject interviews at least once a month on either a Wednesday or a Thursday. 3. What is a ‘conditional offer’? A conditional offer is a promise that we will provide you with a College place as long as you achieve certain criteria. This could include obtaining particular GCSE grades, finding a suitable work placement or receiving a satisfactory reference. At your interview you will be given a ‘Details of Course Offer’ form explaining the outcome of the interview.

Your offer will be confirmed to you in writing. We’ll also send your parent/carer an email. 4. When can I enrol? We start our enrolments on GCSE results day in August. We’ll let you know your enrolment day and time no later than the end of June. 5. What happens if I don’t get the GCSE grades? Don’t panic! We will give you impartial information, advice and guidance about your options. 6. How do I make changes to my contact details?
