Hello Everyone,

Welcome to Aprilʼs edition of your Gran Alacant Advertiser.

It hardly seems possible that we are already in our fourth edition of this year

Certainly a great deal of feed back after last months publication. We had plenty of calls about the theatre group and there were many calls about the chef vacancy, which has now been filled.

As you will see, the Gran Alacant football team have their first game on Sunday 5th, details are on page 61. We are sure they would appreciate your support.

The Tourist Information page lets you know of all of the Easter activities for your enjoyment. Have a good month

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news from the Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005. One of the big problems on Gran Alacant is the grafiti. This month a reader spotted four children grafiti-ing, and took photographs and passed them on to us. They are now with the police.

The 12th March saw the finalisation of the Post Office roundabout. Stepped terraces, artificial grass, shrubs, gravel and installation of irrigation and lighting has completed

We had a tremendous response last month from the article asking for volunteers to start a Gran Alacant Theatre Group. To date over 20 names have made themselves available. If you would like to add to these names, just ring us at the magazine. We do have an article elsewhere in this months edition on this subject. We asked if it had yet been decided which business would run the Gran Alacant train. Decisions are soon to be made and the Town Hall will choose the company they consider best suited to carry on this venture.

this 28,000 euro project.

The unfinished pavements across from the Franks Bar, have been discussed. MASA the builder is responsible for this and they have been informed by the Town Hall. The indoor swimming pool at Santa Pola should be ready for use at the end of the summer.

Gran Alacant has now formed its own football team. They were, however, without a pitch. We suggested they meet with Loreto to ask about the full size artificial

The starting of the new park is imminent, as it has to be completed within this year.

Also this month we were asked if we could help somebody who was a neighbour of a very elderly person in need of care. He lived at home in Spain after his wife had just died, with no immediate relatives. The neighbour made an appointment with Loreto to see if help was available. There are now discussions ongoing with the Social Services. Hopefully this will show us all that there is help out here for problems such as this. If anybody does have questions regarding Social care, there are afternon meetings at the Gran

With the massive amount of tree planting to soon proceed elsewhere, the Town Hall will bear in mind this request. We also mentioned the concerns of the bird lovers among us. Sometimes shrub areas are cut down when birds are building their nests, therefore destroying them.

The area that previously was the temporary school has now had all of the temporary classrooms removed. The perimeter wall has also to be dismantled, so the whole area is left as it was found. A condition of the Town Hall being offered the land, from the owners of the GA Centre.

The email about using some of the land beside the school for car parking was mentioned, but this land is already earmarked for future use, so no funding is availble for a car park. MASA were hoping one day to possibly build a church there, but as funds are not available at the moment but they are hoping to convert an area near by as a temporary measure. If you have questions you would like us to raise at our meetings, please email us.

My wife and I were sitting at a table at my high school reunion, and I kept staring at a drunken lady swigging her drink as she sat alone at a nearby table. My wife asked, 'Do you know her?' Yes,' I sighed, 'She's my old girlfriend. I understand she took to drinking right after we split up those many years ago, and I hear she hasn't been sober since.' 'My God!' says my wife, 'who would think a person could go on celebrating that long?'

A married couple went to the hospital to have their baby delivered.

Upon their arrival, the doctor said that the hospital was testing an amazing new high-tech machine that would transfer a portion of the mother's labour pain to the baby's father. He asked if they were interested, Both said they were very much in favour of it.

The doctor set the pain transfer to 10 percent for starters, explaining that even 10 percent was probably more pain than the father had ever experienced before. But as the labour progressed, the husband felt fine and asked the doctor to go ahead and kick it up a notch. The doctor then adjusted the machine to 20 percent pain transfer.

The husband was still feeling fine. The doctor then checked the husband's blood pressure and was amazed at how well he was doing.

At this point they decided to try for 50 percent. The husband continued to feel quite well. Since the pain transfer was obviously helping the wife considerably, the husband encouraged the doctor to transfer ALL the pain to him. The wife delivered a healthy baby with virtually no pain, and the husband had experienced none. She and her husband were ecstatic.

When they got home they found the postman dead on the porch.

Christopher Turton & Associates (Independent Financial Advisors) of La Marina have many years experience in financial planning, taxation and investment issues. Chris has been in practice for twenty-five years and the last seven here in the Costas. Where should I pay my taxes and can I avoid paying tax here in Spain? Welcome to the second in a series of articles written to inform readers of the Gran Alacant Advertiser. We look forward to providing readers with useful information, and we are available for both meetings at clients’ homes and in our La Marina offices. Over the few years we have found that one of the most damaging people in our ex-pat community is the guy who knows everyone and everything! – you have talked to him, it’s “Fred in the pub” (no offence intended to any Freds out there!) We all know a “Fred”, he never pays taxes, he knows all the best ways to avoid this that and the other, and of course all his responsibilities are avoided too. He’s never caught out, and of course all his planning and investments always do so well with his own ideas! Then all of a sudden, he’s gone, of course he has, he’s been caught out! - who do we seek advice from now? Let’s start with the correct information! If we are residents of Spain, our world-wide income is to be taxed here – anything else is tax evasion whatever Fred has told us! We should legally avoid unnecessary taxes but be prepared to pay what we cannot avoid as any other action is evasion, an offence. For members of certain occupational pension schemes, e.g. the Police Service, payment of UK tax is acceptable, but for most of us, tax on pensions, savings and dividends is due here. The Double Taxation Treaty between the UK and Spain prevents “double taxation”. - in other words, payment of the same tax in both jurisdictions……. but it does not permit us to choose where we pay our taxes. The Spanish state, along with many other nations faces a budget deficit in these difficult times. Consequently, they are seeking to raise revenues and the general public make it so easy for the taxman! We should accept that as residents, we are obliged to declare our worth here and pay our dues as we would in the UK. We do have some generous tax allowances to benefit from and so it’s not all” pay pay pay”! To find out more about tax allowances and relief, along with your obligations to both HM Revenue and Customs and the Spanish tax office, please call us on the numbers below or email for more information. See you next month! Chris or his colleagues are available on one of the numbers below. Please don’t wait until it’s too late, seek independent financial advice now.

I look forward to writing for you again next month, best wishes Chris Turton. christurton1@terra.es Office 902 883 052 (National & Answer-phone) 966 795 714 (Local, La Marina) Mobile 616 531 095 (Chris Turton Direct)

The entertainment SCENE in and around ......... gran alacant

Hello The month of April brought us Paddy’s Night and where better to be, than an Irish Bar, in fact, the Irish Bar of O’Duills, at the Carabasi Centre. The only official Irish bar there. The place was bursting at the seams. 8 euro 3 course meals, as well as the usual menu, saw much eating and drinking, before the live music of Jimmy Mac, got the crowd on their feet. Jimmy performed into the early hours, when he was then succeeded by a few of the Irish showing us typical Irish dancing. The whole evening was a credit to Chris and Mirabel, the owners. There must have been a few bad heads the next day.

Hello folks, here is the next installment of skin types. Dehydrated skin means lacking in moisture. This will affect the way in which the skin appears. Skin will look dull and parched; it may feel dry and itchy. Any skin type may suffer dehydration if it is not cared for and protected properly. Congested skin can often be seen as well as felt. Pores become blocked and waste gathers beneath the upper layers of skin. The texture feels course and lumpy. Whiteheads and blackheads are often present. The skin becomes congested when sweat and sebum are prevented from reaching the skins surface. Causes of congestion are: Inadequate cleansing of the skin: stale make-up and other matter. Humid atmosphere Very fatty skin-care products. Illness: toxins and waste matter build up in the skin Ethnic skin the obvious physical distinction between people of different racial origins is that of skin colour. The variety is enormous, ranging from palest cream to darkest blue-black. In people native to hot sunny climates, the colour of the skin together with variations in its thickness, provide extra protection against damage from ultraviolet and heating effects of the sun. Black skin in general ages much slower than white skin. Blemished skin is any irregularity in the texture or colour of the skin. It can be permanent e.g. birthmark, or temporary e.g. spot. Infected skin. Bacteria, fungi and viruses affect the skin in different way’s, each infection has its own characteristics such as inflammation, irritation, pain, discoloration, swelling or pus. These are all general signs of infection. In next month edition I will discuss Mature and Male skin types. BFN

In last months magazine we ran an article looking for people to come foreward to set up a Drama Group on Gran Alacant.

We were amazed at the response and things have now moved on considerably.

Santa Pola life resort on Gran Alacant.

Roger and Chris who are looking to organise this, were present at a meeting we arranged with us and Loreto, the Gran Alacant Councillor. We found that the Town Hall were very pleased to encourage this group, and offered rooms at the library for initial meetings and the chance to form an official association which would enable the group to use Town Hall facilities.

This meant that they were offered use of the stage at the Santa Pola Life Resort on Gran Alacant or if they would like an outdoor performance the Town Hall would provide the use of a stage, lights, sound, seating etc....for free. Another alternative could be the theatre in the Casa de Cultura on Elche street in Santa Pola. Loreto made an appointment for us to see and take pictures of this wonderful theatre. You could see the joy on Roger and Chrisʼs faces at the thought of performing here.

Casa de Cultura on Elche Street in Santa Pola.

The group have arranged a first meeting at a room in the GA Library on Thursday April 16th at 6pm, to get the group up and running. We will of course let you all know how things are progressing.

DRIVING IN SPAIN Recently, Guardia Civil Trafico branch have been increasing their campaign against speeding drivers. Drivers will be made aware that they are approaching an area that is being observed by a camera and their speed is being recorded. Placed by the roadside are large signs making the drivers aware they are in a radar area. There are several placed on the N332, one outside Del Boys supermarket in Guardamar and one at the salt lakes close to Playa Llisa. Generally, the Spanish police allow speeds in excess of 15 per cent without penalty, to allow for errors in speedometers, etc. Speeds in excess of 50 percent of the limit will result in licence suspension, a jail sentence, community service, compulsory attendance at Traffic school and/or penalty points against your drivers licence. It is against the law to use a speed-checking detecting device and again, if caught using one of these machines will face stiff penalties. If you are caught driving over the speed limit, you will receive a Boletin de Denuncia and you will have 30 days to pay the fine. But, if paid within 10 days, you get a discount of 30 per cent!!! If however you feel the fine is unjust, and decide not to pay then you can just wait. It is not the Police who fine you. They report the violation and issue a ticket. You must receive written confirmation from the court that you have been fined. If you do not receive a written fine from the court, you cannot be held liable. The traffic department is required to notify you at your home address. If your parking ticket is 91 euros or less , this qualifies as a minor infraction and lapses after 3 months. If the fine is between 92 euros and 300 euros, this counts as a serious violation and lapses after 6 months. Due to an article we wrote for Gran Alacant advertiser, we were inundated with requests for informes on vehicles. Due to the current credit crises and to also try to help out our fellow expats, we at Legal Solutions are offering a FREE informe on Spanish registered vehicles. Therefore, you will be aware if there are any outstanding fines or incidents on the vehicle BEFORE you buy it. Please telephone the office for more details. Till next month, safe driving. WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge

Last month I told you about a bird suffering from an identity crisis at the hands of British birdwatchers, and here he is – Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you either the Purple Gallinule, the Purple Moorhen, the Purple Coot, or as it is now known, the Purple Swamp Hen. At least, that’s what my Collins Bird Guide for Britain and Europe now calls it, and anyone with the slightest interest in Spanish birds should have a copy of this book. The Spanish have settled on the name Calamón Común, so perhaps the bird isn’t quite as upset about that. Closely related to the Moorhen (black/brown bird with a red bill) and the Coot (all black with a white bill and forehead) which can also be seen on the Clot, it is larger than both. It inhabits the reed beds of the Clot, and is most easily seen at the pool known as the Charco de Contacto just across the road from the Carabassi Bars. Well, I say easily, but it’s often a matter of luck whether one will show itself – you can spend hours in the hide without seeing one, then there is that distinctive raucous screech and one will wade through the water right in front of you. The Purple Swamp Hen feeds mostly on vegetable matter, squeezing through the reedbeds on those enormous red feet, but is also partial to the occasional egg from someone else’s nest and even young birds such as ducklings, as well as frogs and small fish. Although it looks ungainly and heavy, it is a strong flier, and if suitable habitat is created for it, it will move into those areas quite readily. Last summer, one had taken up residence in the newly-created water area to the west of the original Charco pond. There are probably at least a dozen pairs of these birds in the area, with more in the El Hondo reserve near Elche, which is good news for the birds as up to the 1970’s they were considered to be in some danger of extinction in the Iberian Peninsula. However, conservation measures and protection from hunting have enabled the bird to make something of a comeback in Spain, and the population seems to be quite healthy in numbers. It is unknown in the UK, so British birding visitors are always keen to see one when they’re over here. Here’s something for all you factoid fans – the Purple Swamp Hen was one of the few birds that the Romans would not eat, being regarded as a noble bird. They also believed that it was able to detect and report adultery, and for this reason many were kept in captivity. So if it squawks loudly at you when you next see one, you’ll know you’ve been rumbled! See you next month.

emails...answers on our news pages

Hi,

We own a property on Puerto Marino, Gran Alacant, and find your regular publication very useful, informative and interesting. I have to say that it provides an excellent service, not only to local Gran Alacant and surrounding areas residents, but also to those of us not yet lucky enough to live there full-time. I strongly applaud the efforts being made to bring problems that arise to the attention of the local councillor(s) and am equally pleased that positive action appears to be taken as a result. The recent identification of park areas, tree planting and footpath repairs/completion in a number of areas on the urbanisation are all to be warmly welcomed and all will undoubtedly help to make Gran Alacant an attractive and even more desirable place to live. I wonder whether representation can be made in respect of a couple of issues in the area of the Puerto Marino development, immediately adjacent to the GA Commercial Centre. * Could consideration be given to planting suitable trees for the length of the footpath that runs between Avda Finlandia 7 and the GA Centre car park. * If the actual planting of trees was not an option, could suitable trees/plants/flowers be planted in large pots along that length of footpath. - either of these options would not only be aesthetically pleasing and provide a degree of privacy and shielding from noise for residents of Puerto Marino, but also serve to enhance the general appearance of the environs of the GA Centre. * Could consideration be given to a couple of suitable trees/plants/flowers being placed in large pots immediately next to the Car Wash (between the Car Wash and the houses), thus giving some degree of shielding (in particular from noise) to the houses facing out onto that area of the car park. * Could consideration be given to completing the footpath that runs from the main Avda Finlandia alongside the currently waste ground behind Lidl/Consum (because it is unfinished, it attracts dog walkers that allow their pets to constantly foul the pathway). * The waste ground referred to above has been undeveloped for some 4 years and there is no real indication as to what is likely to be built there and/or when. Various rumours have abounded for some time but, despite the ground having been cleared and then used as a dumping ground again on several occasions, it still remains a dustbowl and an eyesore. It would actually make an ideal small park/"green area", perhaps with a couple of pelting courts, but I realise that is probably just wishful thinking! It would, however, again enhance the environs of the GA Centre. Is it possible to establish what plans there are for this area of land?

I appreciate that, owning a property on Puerto Marino may make my comments seem a slittle parochial, but I do genuinely believe that any improvements along the lines that I have suggested would actually improve the whole general area around the GA Centre, which itself is excellent and deserves a slightly wider infrastructure to support and enhance it further. I know that I speak for a considerable number of people, not only residents of Puerto Marino, and would be grateful for any assistance you may be able to give in getting some of these issues addressed. Many thanks for your consideration. Keep up the good work with the magazine! Best regards,

Dave HARTIN

Dear Barry and Sandra

emails

I am writing in response to a letter last month, asking for you to lobby the council to spray the fir trees in residential areas, due to the potential harmful effects of the processional caterpillars. I live opposite some fir trees and have seen council parks staff come and survey the trees three times, and where they have seen the tell tale caterpillar sacks, cut them down with long loppers, bag and remove them. I think this is good service, and far better than spraying the trees, which would be very `hit and miss´ and worse for the environment, not to mention any humans who could be in the area, (especially with the winds we often get in Feb/March, when `spray drift´could occur) and indeed the men doing the work. Maybe the writers of the letter need to convey to the council the area in which they are concerned, in case it has been missed. Regards Rose

Hi Barry & Sandra

emails

I was wondering when you meet the councillor next you could ask him why the church has to go into Phase 3 even if it is only going to be for 2 years ( we hear ) Could the new school not be used for this and a bit of the waste ground next to the school cleared for more parking. There could even be a route made on to the new roundabout ??? I think this solution would suit everyone

By the way you and Sandra are doing a great job with the mag all the best ian

An atheist was walking through the woods. 'What majestic trees! - 'What powerful rivers! - 'What beautiful animals! He said to himself. As he was walking alongside the river, he heard a rustling in the bushes behind him. He turned to look. He saw a 7-foot grizzly bear charge towards him.. He ran as fast as he could up the path. He looked over his shoulder and saw that the bear was closing in on him.. He looked over his shoulder again, and the bear was even closer. He tripped and fell on the ground. He rolled over to pick himself up but saw that the bear was right on top of him, reaching for him with his left paw and raising his right paw to strike him. At that instant the Atheist cried out, 'Oh my God!' Time Stopped. - The bear froze.. - The forest was silent. As a bright light shone upon the man, a voice came out of the sky. "You deny my existence for all these years, teach others to believe that I don't exist and even credit creation to cosmic accident. Do you expect me to help you out of this predicament? Am I to count you as a believer?" The atheist looked directly into the light, "It would be hypocritical of me to suddenly ask you to treat me as a Christian now, but perhaps you could make the BEAR a Christian." "Very well," said the voice. The light went out. The sounds of the forest resumed. And the bear dropped his right paw, brought both paws together, bowed his head and spoke: "Lord bless this food, which I am about to receive from thy bounty through Christ our Lord, Amen.."

Dave The Computerman.

Welcome to the monthly computing column brought to you by Dave the Computerman (MCSE)

Email explained

The main advantages of email over ordinary mail is the speed at which documents can be sent to people anywhere in the world. I say documents because it is not only written words that can be sent, pictures, sounds and even programs can be sent too. When you send an email, you compose it and then send it from your machine to your Internet Service Provider (ISP) who sends it to the ISP of the recipient. Everyone who wants to use email must have an e-mail address to send and receive their mail. An email address consists of the name YOU chose when you signed up to the service, then comes the @ symbol which separates your name from the domain name to which the mail must be sent. Thus the computers know where to send the mail. Looking at my email address - gacomputerman@yahoo.es tells a sending computer that any mail sent to me must be sent to the yahoo server in Spain (the .es part) and only someone signing in as gacomputerman can open it. Some company email servers will not allow HTML formatted mail which means you must use text only, no pictures, nor coloured paper as used by programmes like Incredimail. If you find one of your contacts cannot read your mail try sending it as plain text only. HTML mail can also be used to send viruses and Trojans-do not open html mail if you do not recognise the sender. It is still possible to send emoticons in plain text and here are a few you may like to use to cheer your recipient up when they open your mail. :-) happy, :-( sad, :-o surprised, >-( angry, :-D laughing, ;-) winking.

The Demise of the Floppy The good old floppy has long been superseded by CD-Roms, DVDs and especially the USB memory key as a medium to back up documents. Its puny 1.44Mb of memory could just about hold a paperback novel, but not much else. A CD-ROM will hold 650Mb, a DVD 4GB and USB keys come in all shapes and sizes. Most new systems do not now come with floppy disk drives, choosing instead to have memory card readers as standard. Another sad fact is that the lifespan of digital recording media is nowhere near as long as we were led to believe. Your hard drive is designed to last between 5-7 years, tape backups will only last about 10 years and CD and DVDs are only good for about twenty years, and all of those figures suppose that they have been looked after well. Back to the floppy and now would be a good time to dig out all of your old floppies that you have and put them onto your computer before backing them up on to a CD/DVD/External Disk. Once the floppy drive goes you will not be able to do this, so now is as good a time as any to go through your old letters, photos, email addresses and reminisce whilst getting your memories in order. I hope that you find the column useful and if you have any further questions, or need assistance please call me on 637 55 45 79 or contact me at gacomputerman@yahoo.es I am now an official installer/operator of TORRESAT TV with prices starting from 120 euros.

Born out of the often cut and thrust world of the Gran Alacant forums, Gran Alacant football club is up and running.

on the left Glen from Legends (shirt sponsors)

A successful fund raising evening held in Legends bar on new years eve and a sponsorship deal with the same bar has left the club with it’s next goal......a game. Well on Sunday 5th April at 5pm they entertain Torrevieja allstars and with a large party coming through with their team it should prove to be a great occasion. But things have not been all plain sailing.....problems booking a pitch did thwart them for a while however, Santa Pola football club have come to the rescue offering their training pitch for the first fixture. But Ian Robertson known as Luton Town and manager of the club hopes this is only the beginning he said "I hoped the whole community would get behind the new club where we

can have a team capable of playing in a local league on a weekley basis and a team for local children. We see it as way of giving something back into the community we all love so much" he said. The club is on the look out for players of all standards and also for anybody interested in coaching and setting up a childrens team. Anybody interested please contact him on irobertson975@hotmail.com. or call in and see Julia or June in legends bar. The Gran Alacant football club football club shirt is now available and has already proved very popular with several repeat orders already placed. The cost is 20 euros and available in all sizes and is available in Legends bar and on La Marina maket a percentage from each shirt sale is donated two proud supporters to a local animal charity, some of which has already been paid out, great for a club that has not yet even kicked a ball. by IAN ROBERTSON

WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO IF I “FIND” AN “ABANDONED” ANIMAL? (PART ONE) Sometimes, during our daily routine at the Practice, we can face some legal matters which may involve our clients, and in most cases they are solved in a quick, efficient way, but sometimes they may be a source of not very nice situations. In this article we are only going to talk about those animals which are considered in Spain as companion pets stricto sensu (dogs, cats and some small mammals such as hamsters and Guinea pigs). In next month article we will talk about exotic pets and Spanish wildlife. About companion pets, dog is the only species which is obliged to be microchipped, according to the law, from the moment they are 3 months old. This means puppies younger than 3 months may be chipped or not, and both conditions would be legal. What would happen in case of a dog older than 3 months without a microchip? It would be violating a Valencian, Spanish and European law, but legally speaking, it doesn’t mean the dog “has no owner”, because the possibility of a dog living alone is not recognised by law, so it would be supposed to be lost or abandoned without a right identification, for this reason, according our conversations with policemen and other legal experts, we cannot simply adopt the pet straight. So, if we find a dog walking alone at the street, all we can do is: -Call the Policía Local (they must do something about it by law). -Take it to a Vet Practice to make sure if it’s got a chip or not, and then: -If it’s got a chip, the Vet will notify RIVIA (the Valencian microchip database), which will try to find the legal owner. Meanwhile, the dog may remain with the person who found it, if he wants, or maybe it will be taken to the Town Hall facilities. If the owner cannot be located (normally because he’s no longer got the telephone number he had when he registered the dog, so, now you know, PLEASE let RIVIA know if your telephone

62

number has changed!!!), and the person who found the dog is interested in it, he must apply the Town Hall to declare the dog as officially abandoned (“Parte de abandono”), and then the dog can be adopted legally. It normally takes a very long time, because Town Halls are normally not in a hurry for those matters, so, if necessary, there are other options, fully legal and accepted by Vet Colleges, and your Vet will inform you about them. -If it hasn’t got a chip, the first thing to do is to let the Policía Local know, because if the owner is interested on recovering the pet, he is supposed to let the Police know as well. If the owner appears, He’s got the right of recovering the dog (of course, by paying first a fine for having it without any identification!!). If we are interested on the dog, and nobody claims for it in a 10 days period (it may vary according to the Town Hall!), we can chip it and then it becomes officially ours. If we are not interested, the dog will normally be taken to the dog pound or shelter. In case of a cat, because they are not obliged to be chipped, it’s difficult to know if it’s got an owner or not, and even more to find him. In this case the best thing is to take it to the Vet to make sure if it’s got a chip or not. If it’s not identified (the most common case), you ca try to find the owner by hanging photos or advertisements, etc. If the cat is been chipped, the proceeding is exactly the same as the dogs one.

The learning of the Spanish Language supplied by Matthew Brock

SLS

Lessons of the Month

www.spanishlanguagesite.com

We are in DEEP trouble... The population of the UK is approximately 60 million. 32 million are retired.

´Have to´ and ´must´ Have you ever considered this point? That there´s not much difference between ‘you must do your homework’, and ‘you have to do your homework’, but that there is a world of difference between ‘you mustn´t walk on the grass’ and ‘you don´t have to walk on the grass´? In the negative, one sentence has a sense of obligation, that the thing is forbidden (mustn´t), and in the other, there is a sense of choice (don´t have to). You can choose to do it or not. In Spanish there are two verbs that match the meaning in English. ‘Tener que’ has the meaning of ‘have to’, and ‘deber’ has the meaning of ‘must’, and you can keep these matches when you are working in the negative. So, to translate the sentences above: 1) You have to do your homework Tienes que hacer tus deberes 2) You must do your homework Debes hacer tus deberes 3) You mustn´t step on the grass No debes pisar el césped 4) You don´t have to step on the grass - No tienes que pisar el césped Can you see that in both instances, the verb following the ‘tener que’ or ‘deber’ is in the infinitive? Another example of two verbs for the price of one!

That leaves 28 million to do the work. There are 17 million in school or at Universities. Which leaves 11 million to do the work. Of this there are 8 million employed by the UK government. Leaving 3 million to do the work. 1.2 million are in the armed forces preoccupied with killing Osama Bin-Laden, and fighting in Afghanistan Which leaves 1.8 million to do the work.. Take from that total the 0.8 million people who work for Local County Councils. And that leaves 1 million to do the work. At any given time there are 488,000 people in hospitals or claiming Invalidity Benefit. Leaving 512,000 to do the work. Now, there are 511,998 people in prisons. That leaves just two people to do the work. You and me. And there you are, sitting on your backside, reading jokes. Is it any wonder that we are in such a mess and that I am stressed out through trying to cope all on my own?
