As our front cover picture shows, at this time of the year the mimosa really do add a lovely splash of colour, whether on GA or going along the N332 into Santa Pola. Where we come from in Norfolk, we used to have yellow gorse bushes on the sides of the road, so itʼs nice to have the same colour as a bit of a reminder of back home. Although the weather in the UK over the Easter holidays is not something we want to be reminded of. It was nice to see a lot more people around GA over the holiday period and must have been very welcome to all of the businessess. This month we welcome several new advertisers to the magazine. NE News which includes some from our meeting with the Gran Alacant Councillor Loreto Cascales

Last month we mostly spoke of the big money investment on Gran Alacant by central and local government. This month it is the turn of the new ventures now opening for us all, via the private investor. The relaunch of the Designer Depot clothes shop was closely followed this week by the launch party for the Silver Spoon International Restaurant, where their food is prodominately Indian.

meeting we are arranging at the Town Hall to discuss various land areas of concern on GA. Because of the Easter holidays we will be discussing various issues in our May edition. A new tourism office is going to start working in Gran Alacant next to the Municipal Office. As soon as the workers of the Town Hall finish with the fitting-out of the area, the office will start working from Monday to Saturday during the mornings. There, you will be able to find all the tourism information about Santa Pola and the whole area of Alicante. You will have also information about all

More tree planting has taken place along the front of El Clot (pictured below). Once all of these trees and

shrubs are established it should add to the area.

In February it was announced that Aquagest Levante were going to invest approx 8 million euro to install a solar park on 50,000 metres of land, given by the Town Hall of Santa Pola. This project is based on the creation of a mixed solar park, which includes, solar modules of high concentration, with the traditional solar modules that turn towards the sun. These solar modules will be located in one of the old lagoons and should begin to work during this summer. The solar park has been designed so that the energy produced will be much more than aquagest consumes. In a previous issue we mentioned that the Councillor for Gran Alacant - Loreto Cascales was to meet individually, all of the presidents of the various communities. This is now in progress, so please, anything

you would like to say, tell it to your president. We believe it is gratifying to know, that we are being asked what we would like done in our Urbanisation. This is the ideal opportunity to start the ball rolling to achieve all of our aims for our community, rather than being told what to have.

There are several activities for English speaking people at the Municipal Library of Gran Alacant. There are two courses of Spanish, and also a trip to the Petrer hill on the 13th april. (also see page 69). Anybody who may be interested in these activities or others can be informed at the Municipal Library (going there or calling to the phone number 96.669.71.10). We have been told about the installation of three streetlights at the end of Avenida del mediterráneo together with Avenida Carabassí. There are also going to be 3 more streetlights which have been asked for and will be important to those people living in that area of GA. They are going to cost 6.000 euros and are sure they will be a great deal better for everyone.

It is important also to know that around 17 researchers have been in Santa Pola at the CIMAR (or Marine Investigation Center) in order to find out more information about the animals and fishes living in our sea.This is the first international visit and investigation that has been carried out in this center.

Because of the scandal of Sweet Charity the residents of GA are asking about this particular group. Of course they should and Jean asked that I contact you with the view to you printing an article about the Group to allay their fears. I should add that I am coming to GA on Wednesday 5 March to give a talk to a group of ladies. The group was started in 1999 by myself and 4 other women who had been touched by cancer in one form or another. The group is a registered charity with the charity number is 7261 and the NIE G 53448866. The original name was MARINA ALTA BREAST CANCER SUPPORT GROUP, hence MABS but when the medical profession realised we were NOT a group of women holding coffee mornings they sent us ALL types of cancer thus we changed the name to CANCER SUPPORT GROUP but kept the MABS because Alicante would not allow us to changed the name offically. they said what was the problem with the name we had!!!!! The group offers help to those ill with cancer and their families even if not in UK with information on the type of cancer and the treatments given. There are translators and drivers available to take people to clinics,hospitals and doctors if they are unable to drive or don't want to. WE ask can you afford to pay? if not then we pay as we feel drivers, translators etc should be paid for their time and of course the use of vehicles. Our time is free as is the information given to those who wish to know the ins and outs of the illness. We receive NO funds from local or regional governments hence we need to fund raise to pay for information, cphotocopying, drivers, translators nurses etc. There is a committee of 7 - 2 German, 1 Dutch and 4 British and we speak 4 languages - German Spanish, English and Dutch. We have access to other languages if need be. All funds raised in different area such as GA will be used to assist those on this Urbanization. To date we are giving finacnial assistance to a lady whose mother came to visit but was taken ill with cancer and although given a SIP card cannot get certain medical items which are very expensive therefore we pay on receipt of her bills each month.

Digitise your photographs The only thing you need to turn your old paper photos into a digital format is a scanner. This will allow you to transform your boxes of old photos into an immaculate, organised, easily-shared and safely backed up media collection. To start with, attach the scanner to the computer, warm the lamp up by turning it on, and if possible calibrate the scanner. Choose the scanning resolution and set the brightness, contrast and colour balance. This can be done at the image preview stage. Scan your photo directly into an image editing programme. Most scanners and cameras come with a programme, such as Kodak easy share, or Fuji photosuite. These tend to come with lots of bloated items that the average user does not need, and there are free alternatives. For editing photos a good programme is The Gimp, found at (www.gimp.org). This programme is a useful tool to remove obvious photo flaws, and to adjust lighting levels. The unsharp mask option will sharpen your scanned images and the cloning brush can be used to remove scratches and skin blemishes. Your collection of photographs on the computer can soon become quite large and you need a good filing system to keep them all in order. Place your photos into folders and list your folders by the year, then the month, thus ensuring they will always be listed in the correct order. Software such as the free Picassa2 programme is useful for cataloguing your photo collection. Tell it which folders to include and Picassa lists all the photos in those folders and allows you to attach keywords and tags to your pictures. Picassa will also run a full-screen slideshow of your chosen folders. Picassa2 also allows for synchronised back-ups to CDs, DVDs or external hard drives, vital if you suffer a hard disk failure, fire or loss of computer. Remember to keep any backups in a cool dark place. PS/ Important household documents can also be scanned, and in fact I scan my passport and send a copy to my email address, thus I have a copy of the necessary details should my passport be lost. Windows Vista Service Pack Service pack one for Windows Vista has now been released and includes all of the latest security updates, however, it has caused some security software to stop working. Trendmicro products have been affected, but AVG has not. Before installing the service pack, set a system restore point and check with your security product website before installing the service pack. Windows XP service pack 3 is almost ready and this will be the final service pack for this operating system. There is a severe fault in Real Player at the moment, which can allow a hacker to enter your computer if it is used with Internet Explorer. Real's advice is to stop using Internet Explorer. HOUSE SWAP on Gran Alacant

The house is an aurora plus on Monte-y-Mar (606). It has 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a balcony, large basement and sun terrace. It is fully furnished and equipped, I have had security grilles fitted, and our communal pool is just down the bank and opened in summer 2007. We have sea views from our sun terrace. The garden at the front is fully tiled. There are three similar houses on the market in the area for around the 200,000 euros mark. I will exchange ours for a property in the UK worth £120,000 so at todayʼs average rate of 1.3 this gives a price for the house in Spain of 156,000 Euro which is exactly how much I paid for it when reserved in June 2004. This does not account for the costs of kitting the house out. This must look like a good deal and people may ask if I am mad. Since the birth of our second child we will not be using the place for a while so I would like to offer it as a swap for a house anywhere in the UK which I will rent out. At the top of Gran Alacant, on the main road, just past the medical centre, there is yet another stylish, relaxed bar. It's name is El Paripe. An Andalucian expression to describe a coming together of old friends, a reunion. I attended a fiesta there on Saturday the 22nd of March and although I am not an 'old friend', I was made more than welcome. An exhibition of personal photographs donned the walls, promoting a local photographer. A charasmatic D.J. kept the tunes pumping and after a slow start, an ever increasing crowd of what looked like a mix between local hippies and 'ALICANTEWOOD' film stars turned up, fashionably late of course. The upstairs open terrace was sadly closed, but I was assured that as soon as the sun comes out and the windy season dies off, it will be ready and waiting. It really is a beautiful place to sit on a summers night. The owner (to the right of the picture) runs a tight ship. With three other hardworking staff, the team made sure that whoever walked through the door was showered with attention and served with a drink instantly. Good looking food was also being served up until late as the Spanish like to eat much later than us and also I think to soak up the alcohol. After arriving too early, and drinking too much brandy (on the house of course) I left just after midnight. But not to worry. I am sure that there will be many other events taking place at this venue throughout the summer.

IS YOUR PET OVERWEIGHT?

Besides, all those problems imply a vicious circle: the more tired the animal feels, the less he moves and the more obese he gets. Then, we start thinking things like: "poor thing, he gets tired so easily..." or maybe "he is so old that he doesnʼt want to play anymore", and then we believe the only way to prove we still love him is a treat or "extra" Fortunately, responsible owners can correct or avoid this, because sometimes obesity is just a handling problem (there are no obese wild animals) caused by the fact we havenʼt been taught to feed our pets according to their needs. In some other cases, alterations of appetite and/or body shape are caused by a disease: -Hypothyroidism: itʼs deficit of thyroid activity. Dogs that suffer it are less active than normal, sleepy, and they will accumulate an excess of fat even if they donʼt eat too much. Besides, some skin and fur alterations are reported. The disease can be easily detected testing the blood, and the treatment just consists on supplying the hormones the thyroid is unable to produce.

-Cushing Syndrome: consists on an increased activity of adrenal glands cortex, which produces steroidal hormones. The usual symptoms are polyuria-polydipsia (drinking and passing more water than normal), the abdomen gets much bigger than normal and starts hanging down, and the skin becomes sensitive and fragile. The diagnosis is performed by detecting the high

levels of steroidal hormones in the blood, and the treatment consists in some tablets. -Diabetes mellitus: high levels of blood glucose, caused by deficit or total absence of insulin. The treatment, in most cases, requires supplying insulin by subcutaneous injections. -Problems with brain satiety centre -Hormonal problems (castration)

-Behavioural problems (panic,depression) -Too tasty or ad libitum available diets -Competition between pets -Excess of treats

-Decreased physical activity (the dog has no space to run free, the owner hasnʼt got enough time to walk the dog, the dog never goes out because he is aggresive...)

-The diet has too high energy content. This is the case of adults or senior dogs eating puppy foods: even if they donʼt eat a very big quantity of food, they are having too much energy, because those foods are being formulated for animals which are growing up. -Genetical factors Depending on the cause of the obesity our cat or dog is suffering, the Vet will recommend us a specific plan to make him recover the optimal body condition. That plan will take a short or a long time depending on the degree of obesity of our Pet.

More parades of Moors and Christians held this month are these: San Vicente del Raspeig 16th to 20th, Busot 18th to 21st, Banyeres, also very good, 22nd to 25th, Onil 28th to 1st of May, Granja Rocamora 30th to 3rd of May.

Also there is a special event in Teulada-Moraira “Bous al Carrer” young bulls in the street. In Alicante on the 3rd takes place the “Romeria de la Santa Faz”, if you want to discover what a popular pilgrimage in Spain is go and join it, I must warn you that there will be thousands of people. In a hospital's Intensive Care Unit, patients always died in the same bed, on Sunday morning, at about 11:00 a.m.,regardless of their medical condition. This puzzled the doctors and some even thought it had something to do with the supernatural. No one could solve the mystery as to why the deaths occurred around 11:00 a.m. Sunday, so a worldwide team of experts were assembled to investigate the cause of the incidents. The next Sunday morning, a few minutes before 11:00 am., all of the doctors and nurses nervously waited outside the ward to see for themselves what the terrible phenomenon was all about. Some were holding wooden crosses, prayer books, and other holy objects to ward off the evil spirits. Just when the clock struck 11:00, Pookie Johnson, the part- time Sunday cleaner, entered the ward and unplugged the life support system so he could use the vacuum cleaner.

Best Apple Pie A Missed Flight Not for the first time, we hear of a visitor missing their flight home to the UK The flight had been brought foreward with no notice. So turning up in good time after their holiday, they were astounded to find that the flight left four hours earlier. To make it worse, a new flight had to be booked, and paid for again. Whilst complaining to the information desk, they were made aware of the small print, stating, it is up to the passenger to ring the airline to check that their departure time had not been altered. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!

FOR PASTRY 2 cups plain flour - 1 tsp salt - 1 tbspn sugar 6oz (3/4 pack) BUTTER - 3 tbspn lard or white vegetable fat - 3 1/2 tbspns cold water EGG WASH beat 1 egg with a little water - Mix flour, salt, sugar, add fat in small pieces and rub in to breadcrumb stage. (Or pulse in food processor). Add water and mix to a dough. Do not over-handle the dough. - Chill if necessary, use 2/3 to line a 9-10 inch deep pie tin, allowing extra to go over edges. APPLES You need 2kg (!) of unpeeled apples to start. Use 2 or 3 varieties of eating apple, crisp, sweet,red, green, whatever. - Peel and slice. In a LARGE bowl put - 1/2 cup light brown sugar - 1/4 cup white sugar - 2 tbspn plain flour - 1 tsp cinnamon - pinch salt mix together. Toss sliced apples in a tablespoon of LEMON JUICE, then toss in sugar mixture. ADD 1 tsp Vanilla EXTRACT. Mix well. Pile into pastry lined tin, making sure not to leave gaps at the edges. Baste pastry edges with beaten egg wash. Roll out remaining pastry to fit, press edges together and roll inwards to stop overflow of juices. Baste with egg wash, just enough to damp it, put at least 8 slits in the top and sprinkle with a little sugar. Place on a shallow tin tray (to avoid oven clean up!) Bake in preheated oven at 200c for 50 minutes. If it looks as if it will take less time, that it is cooking too fast, turn it down to 180c. It is the time that is important, you need the fruit to cook too, not just the pastry. When cooked it should look golden and smell lovely! TIP For easy prep of apples - Have an old plastic bag for waste - Cut off tops and bottoms wasting as little as possible. - Then use a potato peeler to peel from top to base. - For slicing, place apple up-right on board. Use sharp knife to slice off pieces until you reach the core. Turn towards you so flat edge you have just cut faces you. Cut in slices from the right to the core (or left if you are left handed). Repeat until you have a square of core left which you can discard. This method has the advantage of being easier and also gives slices of different dimensions, which helps the texture of the pie.
