Hello everybody!
We would like to thank the TOURISM COUNCILLOR for enabling Jose Manuel Blasco to join our magazines monthly column. Many of you will surely have met Jose at the Tourist Information Counter in Santa Pola. He always exudes enthusiasm for all that is happening in our area. Here are his suggestions of “Where to visit” and ‘What to see” for this month
Just a few words to let you know what is going to happen in Santa Pola and its surrounding areas this month. For start, Santa Pola’s Town Hall offers its cultural programme for all tastes and you can check the whole programme on www. santapolaturismo.es Apart from all this, on the 16th of July, the fishermen celebrate their main fiestas, “Our Lady of Carmen”. In the evening there is a religious procession and later on a display of fire works on Levante Beach will be held. On the 7th the XXIV International Swimming Crossing Tabarca-Santa Pola will take place. It’s a real adventure for 1400 swimmers! This swimming crossing has become the most popular one in Spain; there are participants from 19 countries and of course from all over Spain!!! In the surrounding areas plenty of parades of Moors and Christians are taking place.
As you know it is not possible to give the exact dates but the approximate dates are as follows: Rojales, Orihuela 15th to 18th, Cox, Guardamar del Segura 20th to 25th, Albatera, Novelda 17th to 24th, Almoradi - Agost. 20th to 30th. Also in Denia from the 6th to 14th we will celebrate the peculiar fiesta of “Bous a la Mar” - bulls to the sea. This fiesta is declared of international tourist interest. Furthermore, if you missed the spectacular Bonfires of St John go to San Vicente del Raspeig 19th to 22nd, you can have a sample of what it’s like. Finally, in Torrevieja from 22nd to 28th the International Contest of Habaneras & Polyphony is held. If you are fond of this type music, this is your festival. The first week in August, we’ve got parade of Moors and Christians in Aspe. Enjoy yourselves and have a great summer, That’s all for June, my friends.
Hello Everybody, The summer season is now under way and the urbanisation is getting much busier. More people, especially more holiday makers. Many new houses being built on Gran Alacant so should all help to keep the business owners happy. We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, including that from a representative from the Town Hall, as we have since May 2005.
If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine - granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.co.uk The good news is that an English speaking councillor has been allocated to look after our needs here on Gran Alacant. His name is Oscar Valenzuela. We hope to have a report from the new councillor in next months edition. We tried very hard to get him to give us a comment, for this months edition, but, no joy, although Santa Pola papers did carry information. ********** The derelict hotel in Los Arenales news rumbles on. It has yet again been confirmed that new parts were built against the authorization received that prohibited the reconstruction of a dilapidated building. The court argues that the company tried to build a new building on the front line of beach, after having verified that they demolished almost completely the property and that they began to reconstruct it, when it was not authorized.
In a previous edition I mentioned the very uneven piece of ground which was the entrance to parking spaces at the GA Centre, which were dangerous to drive over. This has now been levelled off as you can see in the attached picture. ********** The GA Post Office has incorporated sixty lockers in front of the Gran Alacant office so that users can dispose of their ordinary post 24 hours a day. Those who want to use this new section service should hire it in the office and can choose between two different sizes of locker. They will also be entitled to the return service free of charge for two months and the postmen will deposit in these sections all the ordinary correspondence and then they will give notice so that the users can collect the certified items in these boxes, which will now be unlocked with an electronic keyboard.
This saga just goes on and on, with no end in sight. Please someone, just sort it!!!!!! ********** ********** More and more visitors coming to our area. Alicante-Elche airport has seen the best ever May in its history, after 1.4 million passengers passed through the facility. The whole area seems to be growing very fast. Everywhere you go there are more and more new houses being built. **********

For those of you not out here all of the time. The very first hotel on Gran Alacant, is growing and growing.
********** 12 players celebrated the 90th weekly session of the Gran Alacant Oldies Walking Football on June 13th2019. One was camera shy. Yes, nearly two years since our very first get together.

49ers Birthday Bash at The Pub
Last year it was found that a number of GA residents/home owners would turn 70 during 2019 and the concept of a 49ers birthday bash was formed. This was held on 7 June at The Pub in Masa Square. Steve & Karen offered the premises and kindly arranged for both entertainment and T shirts for the birthday boys and girls. There was a great turn out and in all some 11 birthdays were celebrated (subsequently we have discovered another 3 or 4 ) with Mr Bojangles doing the emcee work as well as singing for us, Paul Allen singing and playing the saxophone with Jim Lyle later providing a song or two into the evening. A good time was had by all with special thanks to all at The Pub as well as Geraldine Roberts for a super cake to mark the occasion.

PLAZA MAYOR NEW TAXI APP FOR LOCALS Santa Pola taxis can now be ordered via a new app called ‘pidetaxi’ The app which is widely available in Spain will assist you in calling for a taxi in GA, Santa Pola and the surrounding Alicante areas. It works in a similar way to UBER in the UK. The website www.taxienalicante.com explains that through the app you can request a taxi with Radio Teletaxi Alicante in just a few seconds. Once you have registered and provided your card details, the app will calculate the approximate price of your trip and store your favourite addresses. It also automatically locates you when you request a taxi and once you have confirmed your destination simply press ‘book’. You are told the type of vehicle on its way to collect you and it’s licence plate number so you can be sure the vehicle you are getting into is the taxi you booked. Here at the GA Advertiser we don’t have any experience of using the app ourselves so would love to hear from any of our readers who do. READ THE MAGAZINE EVERY MONTH AT www.GRANALACANTADVERTISER.com

WHAT IS A URINARY INFECTION? Urinary infection is the inflammation of the organs of the urinary system, which are kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. It is caused by microorganisms −bacteria, fungi, viruses or parasites, and it is often associated with irritative symptoms, such as burning during urination, fever or change in the appearance of urine. Depending on where the infection is located, it will manifest as: Cystitis: It is the inflammatory process of the bladder. It is frequent in women. When it is acute, it means sudden or severe. It is characterized by intense burning, increased urinating frequency, incontinence of urine or, not as often, the appearance of blood in the urine (hematuria). Prostatitis: It is the acute inflammation of the prostate usually caused by the presence of infected urine in the prostate tissue. The common symptoms are fever, burning and difficulty in urinating and perineal pain − pain and weight sensation between the testicles and the anus. Chronic prostatitis is also a frequent form of presentation, and it manifests as recurrent episodes of urinary infection and less severe symptoms. Acute pyelonephritis. It is the inflammation of the renal pelvis (high urinary tract) and the kidney caused by an infection. It is characterized by unilateral or bilateral lumbar pain of one or both kidneys that can extend to the lower abdomen along with fever, chills, nausea and vomiting. It can be

associated with cystitis. What symptoms does it present? Urinary urge: a sudden and almost irrepressible desire to urinate. Pain or difficulty urinating. Polaquiuria: increase in the frequency of urine with small amounts. Pain in the lower abdomen. If these symptoms are accompanied by fever and lumbar pain, you may be suffering from a kidney infection known as pyelonephritis. As in any infectious process, it is essential to identify the germ that causes it to attain a more effective treatment. In the case of urinary tract infections, urine sediment and urine culture (UC) are the most effective tests. In acquired urinary tract infection, the most frequently isolated microorganism is called Escherichia Coli (80%). What exams are needed? It may vary depending on the severity of the symptoms. Normally, a diagnosis can be made with just questioning and judicious medical assessment without complementary tests. In contrast, there are situations in which specific tests must be done to confirm the diagnosis and the severity of the infection. The main test is urine sediment. According to medical criteria, it will be decided if it is necessary to culture the urine with antibiogram, ultrasound of the kidneys and the urinary tract, tomography of the urinary tract or DMSA renal scintigraphy. Prevention. The main defense mechanism of the urinary system is the periodic emptying. For this, two basic measures are needed: drinking lots of fluids and urinate. The patient will be advised to drink at least 2.5 liters of water per day and empty the bladder every three hours during the day. Other measures that are especially important in women are urinating and cleaning the genital and anal area before and after sexual activity. Avoid the excessive genital hygiene and avoid the use of spermicidal creams. After using the bathroom, genital and anal area must be cleaned from anterior to posterior area. International Practicioner of Holistic Medicine, fully licensed & insured ARE MOSQUITOES ALREADY RUINING YOUR SUMMER PLANS? When we drink alcohol or eat sugary foods (which is not too good for us)can raise that metabolic rate in us, while exercise(which is good for us) also raises that rate, so what can we do for the better?
We seem to have been having an outbreak of the pesky little blood suckers again around G.A. while it is great to have more time outdoors these little pests can put a right dampner on it. It is true they bite more people than others, I am one of the lucky ones who don’t get too many. So why do they bite some and not others, and most importantly what can we do to try and deter them? Some say its different body odours that attract them, there is some truth in this but the huge factor is in your metabolic rate and the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) your body releases when you burn energy, this is how mossies identify their target. When they get there they will then determine what blood suits them best. If you are type ‘O’ you will attract more than those with type ‘A’ or ‘B’.
Reduce our intake of sweet products, and before exercise, wear loose light clothing and apply a little essential oil to your system. When going to the pub for a good summery night out, make sure you have your pocket fan, mossies hate wind and struggle to fly in it. Wearing light coloured clothes also acts as a deterrent, they are more attracted to dark clothes. As much as I understand the frustration these little pests bring and the fact that people will try anything to prevent them, it is not always the favoured choice to reach for the toxic aerosols or apply toxic chemicals to our systems, so when required, look out for natural repellents in the pharmacies and health stores. I prefer using essential oils with my family, my diffuser is on constantly in the home and blends are on constantly on the skin. If you are prone to them I would recommend you invest in a diffuser in the home, it would be money well spent, and add oils such as Citronella, Peppermint, Lemon, Geranium, Lavender or Eucalyptus to name a few. For your skin I recommend applying a

rollerball blend to your pulse points several times a day made up in a carrier oil with oils such as Lavender, Peppermint, Geranium, Basil or Eucalyptus (if required ask an aromatherapist what oils will suit any health conditions you may have, as some are not suitable for certain people) and avoid Lemon on the skin during the summer months, as much as it is great for the skin the rest of the year, during the intense heat it becomes very phototoxic to the sun rays and can burn the skin,or worse, cause skin discolouration. Fresh rosemary with 10 drops of Lavender and 10 drops of Lemon in a bowl of water
with some floating candles is a great idea for the outdoor table and smells so much nicer than the garden candles. You can also make your own spray bottles for the home, with some eucalyptus and lemon in water 10-20 drops of each) and use dark, glass bottles for the best results. Lastly lactic acid in the body is a huge attraction – so it’s a perfect time for an aromatherapy massage, not only will it cleanse the body from unwanted toxins, the oils will also penetrate nicely into your first layer of skin and last throughout the day. Any questions you may have on what oils are best for you to use, please feel free to contact me.
Always available within the Reiki Room is my very own homemade skincare products which include oil blends, face or body creams and foot balms, all paraben free & 100% organic, using certified pure therapeutic essential oils for a multitude of skin complaints or just for your daily cleansing routines. I hope this info will come in useful to some of you readers and have a very happy July!! Much Love Jackie x

COMMERCIAL CENTRE THE MAC WAS BACK for M.A.B.S. at Los Dados! The Jimmy Mac party night for M.A.B.S.24th of May at LOS DADOS was certainly a night to remember as our Jimmy hit the stage with supporting acts Mr Bojangles and opera singer Paco. Playing to a packed house and everyone dancing the night away to the wee small hours. The amount raised on the night is euros 1,249 for M.A.B.S with a few donations from people who could not attend to be handed in. I will message on Facebook when this occurs. Our thanks go out to Margaret Smith who made herself dizzy going round and round selling raffle tickets and Ian Smith, Clive and Jimmy’s brother Ian - chief table movers. Without you supporting our events we would not be able to raise funds for a much needed charity. Thank you Bar Loco for your support in our hour of need also Aquarius, Shooters for the donations of wine for raffle prizes, which we had left from the last load of wine they donated and Gran Alacant advertiser for supplying the tickets. Thank you everyone, for making the event so successful. Jean and Fiona x

HIKING WITH HEIDI & OLLI THE PATHS LESS TRAVELED
El Pou Clar & Bocairent
Driving Time: 1hr 10mins Walking Time: optional Google maps directions: Pou Clar, 46870 Ontinyent, València/Bocairent, 46880, Valencia
My name is Heidi and I come from Helsinki, Finland. With my husband Olli-Pekka and our 3 dogs we live in Gran Alacant and enjoy the brilliant Mediterranean climate and possibility of discovering new hiking routes all over our Alicante province and sometimes even a bit further. Ironically, I have a fear of heights, but I love the views from tops of the mountains too much to stay away. Our dogs are getting older so all the hikes need to be suitable for them too as they always go on our adventures with us. I also love photography and always take load of pictures from our hikes. This destination was tipped to us by Alfonso Castro from Gran Alacant Insurances. We visited both places in November, but I’ve been saving this for summer months as it looks like a fabulous place to visit during hot summer days. El Pou Clar If you remember last months hike Barranc de Tarongers in Ontinyent, this is just a little bit down the road from that. El Pou Clar is

a spring of groundwater located within the Natural Park of Serra de l'Ombria-Pou Clar. This spring is considered the source of the Clariano River. There are number of natural pools formed by the water flowing over millions of years as it passes through steep limestone cliffs. Landscape is very picturesque. There is nice barbecue area in the park.
Each pool has its own name and its personality. There is Pou dels Esclaus with turbid and stagnant waters. El Pou Clar, which gives its name to the whole area which is a perfect place for fishing (the water is so clear you can see the fish). There’s Pou Gelat, where the coldest and transparent waters sprout. The Pou de la

Reixa, the largest of all pools. There’s Pou Fosc with inverted bubble and underwater currents and the Pou dels Cavalls with its deep and calm waters.
Bocairent And just few kilometres away is the lovely town of Bocairent which is built next to a ravine. It is breathtaking to see for the first time. You can easily walk along Bocairent and stop for a snack and coffee in the center of old town. Or you can follow the route they have around the town. You can look at the different routes they have on their website: www.bocairent.org/ tourcats/a-pie/ You are also able to visit the Moorish caves. There’ a little entrance fee and you should check when they are open if you wanna go there. We unfortunately visited the town on
Monday when everything was closed. Dogs also not allowed to the caves, so we would have missed that anyway.
CHECK LIST
Always when going on hikes check that: • Your Mobile Phone is fully charged • Water - climbing up is hard job & you will need it • Snacks (Remember to take all the garbage back down with you!) • Have good shoes for walking • Have small first aid kit with you • Have layered clothes. Up hill might be very windy and cold, even on a warm day. Coming down might be chilly, so extra dry t-shirt to change into if needed is not a bad idea • Always tell someone where you are going and when you’ll approx. be coming back

Unusual, For a Man of Your Age The decision, when it came, was easy. He had been feeling unwell all day and had gone to bed early to help sleep it off. It was now four in the morning and the pain in his abdomen was intense. He had to see someone. Quickly dressing in something simple, he went to the car and drove with no clear idea of which destination to choose. The General Health Centre might be open but the easiest route was to the Private Hospital for which he had paid so much over the years; it won the “which destination” contest. The choice of buying a car with an automatic gearbox was not based on a situation like this, but he doubted if the journey would have been possible without it. He staggered into the emergency unit, holding his right side, firmly but with some caution. “Your card sir”, said the man at the desk. “What appears to be the problem”? Breathlessly he replied, “I have a severe pain in my right side”. “Ah yes, please take a seat and someone will be with you in a moment”. Barely making it to the nearest seat, he carefully bent down to sit. Almost immediately, the lady in a white coat asked him to follow. She directed him to lie on the bed in a cubicle and said the doctor would be there imminently. “Are you in pain” she asked? He could not remember, later, if he had given a reply, but hoped that if he did give a reply, it was polite. When he woke, the doctor was gently pressing his side. “A classic case sir, you have appendicitis. Acute I’m afraid, we will operate immediately. Unusual, for a man of your age. Are you in pain”? Apparently, the look said it all, and the doctor turned to the nurse and prescribed a painkiller to be added to the drip. When he woke again, he was in a different room, the pain was more intense to the point of him almost calling out for help, just as a nurse appeared and asked, “are

you in pain”? As she changed the drip, she said “I hear you drove yourself here, very brave. Unusual for a man of your age, the appendicitis I mean”. As the new drug took effect he drifted off again. The next image was a young woman in a white coat, floating somewhere above him. Holding out a clip board she said, “We have checked with the insurance company and everything is covered; sign here please. The surgeon will be with you in a moment. Appendicitis. Unusual for a man of your age”. He doubted if the signature would make any sense to anyone who looked at it and he drifted back to sleep, not caring at that stage if it was covered or not. He was still in that land between lands, neither awake nor asleep, when the surgeon appeared and explained the laparoscopy. “All the tests show you are in good health and fit for the procedure with no outstanding issues. Unusual for a man of your age. It will all be over by lunchtime”. The room was white, sparse but somehow reassuring. He was in recovery. Frightened to move and yet anxious to discover what had happened, he tried to lift the sheets. Nothing moved. He seemed paralysed. The panic instantly achieved his objective and his arm lifted his hand which grasped the sheet. Nothing. No tubes or heavy bandage just two plasters covering tiny areas of his abdomen. Three bags of fluid were seeping into his left arm through various tubes. He felt weak but not ill. It was over. The pain in his abdomen, side and back had gone and he was left with a dull, all- over ache. A new nurse appeared and checked his various vital signs and made sure the drips were in order. “You appear to have come through that very easily and all your signs are right up there in the happy zone. I’m sure the surgeon will recommend you go home very soon. Unusual for a man of your age”. (He was only 68)

Animals as Teachers By Jemma “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged in the way in which it treats its animals”. Gandhi
Move, Groove and Groom…
Hi, I’m Jemma.. I share what I continue to learn from animals through my work as a volunteer with them at www.satanimalrescue.com and at www.easyhorsecare.net This month I am pleased to share with you that the new shop in Gran Alacant has opened to a good start . We had a lovely Open Day with a visit from some of the dogs from SATs, Bobbie’ s two and my two. Customers enjoyed a glass of wine , soft drink and snacks. Thankyou everyone who visited, purchased, offered their help and supported the opening, especially to all our new volunteers. In the shop we have pictures of all the dogs hoping to find new homes so please if you are thinking of a long term new member to your family pop in and have a look. Also keep bringing in your donations, we are also taking ítems of furniture, which we can arrange to collect from you. We also have a lovely collection of clothes donated by local Finish designer all handmade, upcycled, recycled and one of a kind. You will never see anyone wearing the same dress as yours! Muchas Gracias a todo. While walking the dogs this week I have been observing again how they move when they walk. The dogs that are well, happy, relaxed and not elderly or infirm have the most lovely free flowing, wave like movement with the spinal chord flexing almost like a snake moving. I know from my yoga training and practice that the spinal chord ultimately governs all our body movements and functions, and that it is vital to keep it flexible and moving, so that the spinal fluids do not become stagnant and sticky. Hence yoga and stretching exercises have become so important. So if you can, try to do gentle forward and back bends, cat and dog stretches, pelvic circles and any movements that encourage free movement of the spine every day or on a
62
regular basis to help maintain good physical health. My understanding is that flexibility of the spine, and of the body in general helps encourage flexibility of the emotions, mind and spirit. With greater flexibity in these areas we can better navigate life’s ups and downs, access greater levels of creativity and understanding of the world at large, make new and different responses to things that happen to us and maybe, access a more expanded and diverse life experience.
DOG OF THE MONTH This month it’s Ron. As a young dog Ron was seen wandering alone in the streets, and was fed by some people for about a week, until they managed to coax him into their garden. They found him to be a gentle , loving pup but sadly were not able to take him in themselves . SATs didn’t have space for him straightaway so he went into boarding kennels for a week . He has now been at SATs for over two years. Ron loves lively walks along with cuddles . He is very friendly but can be nervous of new noises, atmospheres and people. Ron so needs a loving and patient forever new beginning …

Animals as Teachers By Jemma NEW S.A.T Animal Rescue Charity Shop NOW OPEN
When horses are not eating, playing, rolling or moving around they are mutually grooming. This week at Easyhorsecare I have been watching them do this, and this is such a beautiful thing thing to do. How easily they relax and surrender to this sharing of affection, which helps connect them to each other, release stress, give enjoyment, satisfy itch cravings and, apparently also helps release hormones. I think how lovely it is to have my hair washed and brushed by another, to be gently ticked with a feather, to have a massage or reflexology, to hug and hold another, to touch or be touched gently when sharing painful experiences, to
roll my own back on a textured mat, to sit in a spa. ‌this month maybe contemplate on how you nurture yourself and others, for both are equally important.. this helps you connect more to yourself and to others , and I’m sure too this helps release positive chemicals and hormones in our bodies, so vital to retaining good health. And how precious that is ... Please get in touch with SAT or Easy Horse if you are interested in volunteering in any way. Jemma x

Out & About with Star & Ashlee Titanic - The Reconstruction
Hi my name is Star and I have been lucky enough to call Gran Alacant my home for over 11 years now. My 9 year old daughter Ashlee and I are often “Out & About” enjoying the local attractions and culture in this part of Spain. Over the next few months I will be sharing some of our experiences with you to encourage you to go “Out & About” yourselves and maybe learn a little bit about this beautiful place we call home. This month we wanted to write about “Titanic - The Reconstruction” which is a travelling exhibition that is being displayed in the old Fish Market at the Marina in Alicante until the 10th of November. We entered the exhibition and watched a 10/15 minute video that showed the story of the Titanic in Spanish with English subtitles. We recommend you sit in the front row so you can read them easily. We then walked past a half size replica of one of the boiler doors that had various period items around it before a tour coordinator, who spoke English, set us up with our audio guides which are available in English and Spanish.
72
The experience starts with a picture of Lord James Pirrie’s Mansion where it was decided on the 10th June 1907 to start construction of the 3 largest ships in the world, the Olympic, the Titanic and the Gigantic whose name was changed to the Britannic after the tragedy. Interestingly this mansion is now the Embassy of Spain in London! We then saw some large photographs of the construction workers who were building this immense ship. Examples of the different materials that were used, including the rivets that were subsequently
Out & About with Star & Ashlee CARABASSI CENTRE
found to be made of weakened materials are displayed alongside maps, navigation equipment and documents belonging to some of the passengers. As well as providing a commentary, the audio guide also featured the music that was being played to commemorate the musicians who refused to leave the ship as it was sinking, preferring to continue playing in an effort to soothe the distraught passengers.
the story include Marconi communication equipment, clothing, replica bathroom sinks and a ring that belonged to passenger Millvina Dean. However, the crown jewel of this exhibition is the 1:30 scale model of the Titanic that is 12 metres long, 4.20 metres high and 3.90 metres wide. It was painstakingly created in amazing detail and features
Inside a shipping crate the famous painting “El sueňo del Titanic” by Artist Enrique Gran can be admired as well as crates of Henri Abelé Champagne and crockery for the first class passengers. Another featured item of cargo is a beautiful 1910 Brush D-24 car that was due to be transported on the Titanic on its return journey from New York to London, it eventually made its voyage on the sister ship Olympic. Other items that help to tell furnished interiors of the various parts of the ship and moving engines. Ashlee and I spent a long time trying to imagine ourselves onboard. The exhibits and audio guide really helped to bring some of the stories of the passengers to life. Ashlee was especially moved by the story of first class passengers Isidor and Ida Straus who decided to stay onboard and die together rather than be separated as being a woman it was only Ida who was allowed to board a lifeboat. The exhibition is open every day except Mondays from 1030 until 2130 in June, September, October and November and from 1630 to 2200 in July and August. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays tickets cost €5 for children aged 6 to 12, €6 for those over 65 and €8 for everyone else. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays the prices are €6 for children, €8 for over 65s and €10 for general admission. The exhibition takes approximately 1½ hours to walk around and is air conditioned. Until next time Star and Ashlee xxx

Huevos Rotos
Hi all, This month I have decided to make one of our tapas that many of you asked for. What Are Huevos Rotos? Huevos rotos literally means broken eggs. The trick to these eggs is to fry them only until perfectly over easy. Hope you all enjoy. Have a great summer xxx
Huevos Rotos Recipe with Ham, Chorizo, & Peppers
Ingredients • • • • • • • • • •
4 POTATOES (ABOUT 1 PER PERSON) 4 EGGS 1 LARGE ONION ½ CUP OF SLICED GREEN PEPPER THIN SLICES OF IBERIAN OR SERRANO HAM (OR SUB PROSCIUTTO) 1 LINK OF CURED SPANISH CHORIZO 5 CLOVES OF GARLIC, MINCED 1 TABLESPOON PARSLEY EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL SALT AND PEPPER
Let’s Start! Coat the bottom of the pan with olive oil and add the onions over medium heat. Cut the potatoes into thin slices and add to the pan. Cover with the garlic, parsley, and peppers and turn the heat down to low. Cover and gently stir every 10 minutes. Cook for about 30 minutes (until all potatoes are tender and starting to brown) Crack the four eggs over the potatoes and turn the heat down very low. Cover and cook the eggs just until the whites have set. Then, break the yolks and remove from the heat! In the meantime, dice the chorizo in rounds (or remove the casing and crumble), then brown over medium heat in a separate pan. Season with salt and pepper. Cover the potatoes and eggs with thin slices of ham (you don’t need to cook the ham if you are using the good stuff) and the cooked chorizo.

CYCLING with Bici Gran Alacant by Olli-Pekka & James Fulcher Bici Gran Alacant is a group for all road bike cyclists in and around Gran Alacant.
Vega Baja
“All the routes are downhill and with a nice tailwind! (except the bits with climbing and a headwind).” Remember to always take a sense of humour...
When you are not in a mood to ride up a hill you are in luck! Steer your steed towards Vega Baja and you can do loops well over 100km with biggest “mountains” being the railroad and highway overpasses. On the open roads there is of course a good (or bad) chance to encounter some wind so be prepared. The best way to prepare for heavy winds is to find big strong rider in front of you. I have found that Dutch and Norwegian riders are up to the task.
If you feel like doing over 100km you could head out all the way to the capital of Vega Baja Orihuela. Our backstop is usually at Callosa de Segura. We like to change the loop either going through Daya Vieja, Daya Nueva and Rafal, or Albatera. In Daya Vieja Plaza de Leon and in Plaza de Leon “Pasarela Mirador de Daya Vieja” which is an interesting walking bridge build around tall palm-trees which on its own is a good reason to ride there. On the flats it might seem difficult to keep track where you are heading. Small roads cross the landscape with few landmarks. When in doubt just remember: 1) All roads lead to Dolores - I don’t know why but that’s the way it seems to be. 2) If you are going up a mountain you have gone too far.

3) All the other roads lead to Guardamar Segura Since there are still so many roads to be ridden and so little time, I am going to take pause on writing these guides. I hope you have enjoyed reading them and have been inspired to try some of the routes.; it has been good fun writing them. Thanks to all the riders on the group for their help and routes, many pictures and for the great company. Thanks to the ForRiders - bikeshop for keeping my bike in good order. One possible route https://www.strava.com/ activities/2435780953 through Rafal
Few things to keep in mind:
• Always have something to drink with you and for a bit longer rides maybe a banana or muesli-bar • Always have a little money if you need to stop to buy food or drink • Take the phone with you • Many of the small cafés are closed on Mondays • And the most important: Wave the fellow cyclists”
You can find information about several weekly rides on our Facebook page Gran Alacant Road Cyclist “Bici Gran Alacant” and also your local bike shop For Riders have rides and events on their Facebook page.

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge
MONTAGU’S HARRIER
Ask any keen birders what their best moment was while birdwatching, the chances are high that the story will involve a raptor. There’s something about these aerial warriors which brings out the Jeremy Clarkson in birders – Jezza would rather talk about Ferraris and Bugattis than Fiats and Fords, birders want to talk about Eagles, Falcons and Hawks rather than Little Brown Jobs. We have an excellent selection of raptors in our corner of Spain, but unfortunately some of them are only around in good numbers during the winter season, when they arrive to hunt the huge amount of wintering birds in our area. However, the news is not all bad, and there is one spectacular species which only occurs here during the summer when it arrives to breed in small numbers. This is the Montagu’s Harrier, named after an 18th Century British Ornithologist named George Montagu, who did much pioneering work long before most people even thought that birdwatching was a good idea. My picture shows the male bird, mostly silvery-grey; the female is much browner than this, and surprisingly somewhat larger. If you are a relatively keen birder, you may have seen the related (and much bigger) Marsh Harrier which occurs in the Clot from time to time, and can also be found fairly
86 86
easily in the big reserve at El Hondo; the Montagu’s Harrier is a smaller bird, but no less determined in its hunting technique. These are birds which specialise in hunting over extensive reedbeds, low scrub and cereal fields. Their diet consists mostly of small mammals, birds and reptiles as well as larger insects like grasshoppers and crickets. Its hunting technique is to fly slowly and buoyantly along well-determined flight paths, dropping like a stone once it detects prey. They may nest in loose colonies if there are several pairs around, so if you see one bird hunting, you may well see another if you hang around. So where are they? In our area, I have heard very few reports of sightings in the Clot, but it is not the ideal place – to see these birds, the best place to go is along the Lemon Tree Market road on the northern edge of the La Mata salt lake north of Torremolinos. The reedbeds which skirt the edge of the lake holds several pairs, and this is the ideal time to see them as they will be raising youngsters, which of course will need a regular supply of prey. You need to take one of the many farm tracks down to the lake, providing of course that you think your suspension and tyres are up to the job! These are highly endangered birds – the threats to their existence are mostly due to human activities, be it hunting, poisoning, poor farming techniques and loss of habitat. However Spain remains one of their strongholds and they are certainly worth seeking out if you have the time. Then you can bore all your friends with stories starting “When I saw my first Montagu’s Harrier...” You can see more photos of our local wildlife by visiting https://marketheridge.smugmug.com/

GRAN ALACANT GOLF SOCIETY During the last week of May and the first week in June the greenkeeping staff at El Plantio, in common with many other courses in our part of the Costa Blanca, undertook essential hollow tining work on the greens. Over that 2 week period one half of the course was closed and then the other. This did not cause any hardship other than a bit of administration to adjust the par and stroke index on the scorecard to reflect the nine holes played on the back half of the round. As we write this in the middle of June the greens are already recovering extremely quickly and experience tell us that by the time you read this at the beginning of July the quality of the greens will have returned to the tip top condition they were in before the work. Finally for this month, some prior notice that the El Plantio course will be closed between 19 to 30 August. This has occurred in each of the last 3 years and initially we were told for further essential maintenance albeit our feeling is this just Spanish speak for “annual holidays !!! So, for any golfers thinking of playing with us in August should note that our last game will be Friday 16th, recommencing on Tuesday3 September. As always new members and/or guests are always welcome, whether a full time resident, someone with your own holiday home for regular visits throughout the year or a holiday maker in the region. We would love to see you. For more information please contact either Barry C (686180585) or Barry D (966183018).

IF THEY ONLY COULD TALK…
have learnt to listen and understand human words, possibly much better than humans understand dogs. What’s implied on the fact that dogs can understand human language?
Things like this are very commonly heard at every small animal practice: my dog is so clever, if he only could talk... It’s true that dogs can’t talk, but they can do something much more difficult: they can listen. This is the other think you can hear practically everyday at the practice: my dog understands everything I say, like a person would. It looks like this is true since dogs appear to be able to understand about 300 words. Recent researches prove that dogs are able to understand human words as they hear them, that means, not by the voice tone, not by our complementary gestures, but by the word itself, same as a human being would. Dogs intraspecific communication is more based in gestures than in sounds: body, ears and tail position, for example. Barking is not used preferably for communication. This can be easily observed when watching 2 or more dogs playing together: they don’t bark each other. They just growl or cry as a complaint if other dog has hurt them, but that’s all. Dogs that bark a lot are, in most cases, those ones which live with people. Dogs and humans are being living together for more than 10,000 years, and dogs
88
Dogs are not only able to obey commands: sit, come, down... etc. We all know dogs which help disabled people can execute complex commands such as “look for a green traffic light at your right side”, “get an object from the closet”, etc. But not only an elite trained dog: our nontrained companion dog can understand what we say, despite it can’t understand. Possibly most dogs understand perfectly words such as “Vet”, “injection”, “beach”, “play”, “treat”, “shower”, “car”, and the names of its human family members. What about parrots? Well, in comparison with dogs they have an extra advantage since they can articulate human words. In some cases they can understand the meaning of the words they use, and this makes them able to answer questions and ask for things. African Grays are the best talking birds: they can learn 100-200 words. As dogs do, they are able to identify the sound and the meaning, and this makes possible to have a “conversation” with them, of course with big limitations, similar to the one you could have with a 2 years old child. What about cats? Despite we have been investigating at the Internet, we couldn’t find a serious article about feline linguistic abilities, but according to our experience, we firmly believe that they are so clever that they prefer to be silent.

K9 CLUB www.k9club.es
e-mail: k9clubinfo@gmail.com SIRA Sira is a beautiful grey girl with yellow eyes, she is 7 years old, fully vaccinated and spayed.
BLANCA Pointer/Lab cross. She mixes well with other dogs , likes people and is obedient. She also has an amazing personality and is very intelligent..
Sira came from a home where children pulled her about so not suitable for a home with children or dogs.. Sira will take a little time to adjust in her new home where she is genuinely loved and to realize that her traumatic days are behind her. In the short time she has been with K9 she has become very affectionate towards our shelter managers. Sira is used to being an indoor cat, she really is a lovely cat who deserves a loving home.
