Hello everyone Well, that’s it, Barry has hit 65 years of age, and retirement SHOULD loom.....but.....if nobody wants to buy our magazine business from us, we will continue with it, throughout our retirement. Another milestone. Our 14 year old car that we are always about in, has come to the end of its life and has been taken to the scrap yard. So dont wonder why you have not seen us around in it. It was very sad to hear of the death of a very nice gentleman, Charlie Bevan, we only knew him through having a chat in the Monte Mar cafeteria, but, it was very nice just listening to his stories. Due to demand we have upped our print run from this Easter edition. Over the Easter period watch out for the 2nd Big Party on Gran Alacant, it is to be held near the school on the 5th to the 8th of April, see the advert on page 24. Go along for a great time. A Happy Easter to all. Have a good month. Sandra & Barry Our little dog from the front cover has hidden herself away in the magazine, can you find her? Last month she was in the EURONICS advert.

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news, including that from our Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005. It is our perogative at the magazine, NOT to update this 2005 picture, as we all looked a great deal younger!!! We spoke last month of how our Town Hall is promoting tourism around Europe. Tourism in Santa Pola was shown during March at the "Le Mondial

duTourisme" held in Paris, one of the most important holiday events in Europe. France is one of the main sources of visitors to Santa Pola and the Department of Tourism has not wanted to miss the opportunity to further promote our town. Since Santa Pola decided to participate in the fair in Paris, the numbers of French tourists visiting the town have been increasing year after year. According to statistics from the local tourist offices, in 2011 there were 1,499 visits by French citizens, which represents 18.85% of total international visitors, surpassing the records of 2010, with 1,444 views and 17, 60% total. Nice to see a “pet´s cornerâ€? at the GA commercial centre during early

March. Lovely for the kids. On the N332 from GA to Santa Pola you may have noticed the big high mound of what looks like grass, behind the Iberdrola works and to the side of the Sewerage Works. This is all of the seaweed (seagrass) taken from our local beaches. It has been piled there as it is so expensive to have it taken away. The Town Hall now has an industry in Santa Pola that can re-use this, so they can get it slowly taken away for no cost. The start of work for the new market area, is waiting for the representatives from Valencia to make a date, to visit the area, to officially start the works there, combining it with other work starting in Santa Pola. We have pictures in this issue of the second Gran Alacant Boxing event. We also have pictures of the inauguration of works on Av. Mediterraneo up the hill by the post office. One side of the road is due for completion before Easter. After Easter they will carry on with the other side of the road. There will be a better stop point for the buses,

with a proper pull in and seating for passengers waiting for the bus. Various events are planned for Easter at the Commercial Centre, (amongst others events there, there will be a medieval market) At the Life Resort, Santa Pola handicapped group are arranging a market and you will see information in this issue, concerning the Fiesta near the school. The Town Hall are in discussion with all of these areas on Gran Alacant, to see if they can all link together in the interests of the whole urbanisation. An email to us from Bill I get very annoyed seeing the ever increasing rubbish & rubble being dumped on the spare land opposite our home off Calle Chipre. I have just come back from walking our dog when I saw a silver 4x4 pull onto the land opposite us & he dumped his building rubble, looks like tiles etc that has been removed from a wall. I shot over & asked the Spanish guy as best I could not to dump it where he was dumping it & to take it away, but he just ignored me, dumped the rubbish & drove off. It didn't seem to bother him that I took his registration number. (We have not published the registration number). I told him I would report him. I would recognize him again no problem. Just wish I had had my camera with me. Any how to the question, how can I report this Loreto? (We have Loreto full details) I don't have any contact details. I understand they will be reluctant to take it any further action without photographic evidence, but I think even a visit from the police to warn

6

him would go a long way to stopping these people dumping rubbish illegally. Any help will be great. Unfortunately this dumping has been going on for years & it never seems to get removed which encourages the dumpers to carry on dumping. I think maybe sometime it would be a good idea for the counselors & police to meet up with people like myself who can take them around & show them where these people tend to favour dumping their rubbish. As usual things are only noticed or tidied up along by the main roads. It always seems odd to me too why the council refuse to put up signs to discourage dumping, but yes they would be probably ignored & it costs money. If I do take any photos, if I am lucky enough to catch someone whilst I have my camera, I will firstly take note of their size & age & depending on that I will be cautious about who sees me lol. many thanks Bill An email to us from Graham I have a Maltese dog, I take her out every night. Sometimes I walk round Life Resort which is one of the worst areas for dog fouling, I always take paper with me to pick up the mess from my pooch, I notice people round that area never carry the necessary things for picking up their dogs mess. I think people with dogs need to be randomly checked to see what provision they have taken to pick up their dogs mess. If they don't carry anything warders should take their names and caught twice should be summons. Also the proposed market is a dog mess dumping ground. There was a notice

7

many years ago about leaving dog mess there but that was taken down. When the new market is up and running on this area are we still going to tread in this stuff from owners who could not care less. I think there's going to be a big problem there. Another thing people don't realize is those that live facing this field get the smell in summer off it. Regards Graham. An email to us from Alison We live on Monte y Mar lower on Calle Noruega. My son would like to be able to walk to school on his own but I am nervous about him crossing the road, Av Noruega. In theory he could cross at the zebra at the bottom of Max Coop hill but it is so close to the island that drivers coming from Carabassi end are on it before they realise. Could it be moved to a safer position where kids can see and be seen by cars before they commit to crossing? It is not the only one so close to a junction and I don't understand why they are placed like this. The above emails have been read by Loreto and the Town Hall are now being very diligent with these issues. The plain clothes offices designated to the dog problem have to date, fined more than 20 people and issued warnings to many more. The area where the rubble is being dumped is actually Masa´s land, the Town Hall does tidy it and have asked Masa to also clear the rubble. If you can get a photo of offending people without putting yourself in

8

danger please do so, then Loreto can do more about it.

The new Tourist Information Office, (pictured above) is now open to the public and located on the ground floor of the Town Hall, facing the Levante beach eliminating architectural barriers and replaces the old Shipyards Street office. Loreto Serrano, Councillor for Tourism, has indicated that "we are very pleased to have one of the best offices of the Costa Blanca with its seafront location. Funding from the Plan Trust, has made this a reality. The Tourism Area team, led by Loreto Serrano, consists of Mari Carmen Martinez as head of the Bureau, the technique Ana Bermejo, Argentina Bonmatí, manager of the Competitiveness Plan and Carral Ana, Estela José Manuel Blasco Bonmatí and as informants. The garden rubbish problem. We mentioned last month that you can take garden cuttings to the Eco Park at Santa Pola. Take the N332 to Santa Pola, and drive past the Towns entrance opposite the Marina Palace Hotel. Take the slip road to the right to Elche. Turn right at the roundabout, pass the camp site and go over the next roundabout. Take the second red paved entrance on your right. This takes you to the entrance to the Industrial site.

All of the winners at the

Monte Mar Bowls Club Gran Alacant

Some very sad news just before going to press...

One of our longest serving bowling members, Charlie Beaven, collapsed and died during a club social event last Tuesday evening. Charlie always thought of the Bowling Club as his second home and attended every day either to play in or watch games. During this last Winter he had won the club President始s Cup where members gain one point for attending and two extra points for a win. Charlie had attended every one of the 20 weeks of the competition, some weeks just to get the one point even though the weather made it impossible to play. Being such a regular in and around the club Charlie will be sadly missed.

MONTEMAR BOWLS AND SOCIAL CLUB (Sponsored by Super Valu) SABA Discovery League Monday 12th March 2012

The Matadors were at home to Greenlands Chestnuts and a very close match it was, both sides wining two and drawing two. However we did manage to get the most shots. Well played Chris Harding, Wendy Oxley & Ted Hyman and Pauline Woodfine, Sheila Roberts & Barry Woodfine. Shots for 123 Against 91 Points for 8 Against 6

Voyager League (C) Monday 12th March 2012

The Novilleros visited La Siesta for the last game of the season. We each won three rinks and so the points were sharebut we edged the overall shots. The result consolidated our position as league winners but it was a fair result for the home team. Thanks to all the players in the Novilleros Squad for their efforts during the season. Shots for 110 Against 103 Points for 8 Against 6

Winter League Wednesday 14th March 2012

Against Javea Green the Montemar could only manage to win on one rink. Well played Sheila Roberts, John Harding and Dave Melville. Shots for 44 Against 70 Points for 2 Against 8

Southern League Division A Friday 16th March 2012

The Matadors were really up against it today playing away at El Rancho. With their extremely fast and wide swinging greens most of the Montemar players struggled to get a decent score or even score at all. We did however manage to win on 2 rinks and draw on 1 rink, so considering the difficulties this was a very decent away result. Well done to our winning teams skippered by Harry Dobson, Joe Ridley and Colin Armitage Shots for 88 Against 128 Points for 5 Against 9

Bernard Pearce Memorial Trophy.

This year the trophy was won by The team skippered by Chris Merry.

Hi to everybody, In this month there are plenty of celebrations and parades everywhere, wherever you go from 1st to 8th of April you can attend to Holy Week processions. Sunday the 1st is Palm Sunday.procession, if you want to see the best one declared of International Tourism Interest, is the one held in Elche. If you canʼt come to see every procession in Santa Pola and you have to choose one, I recommend to see the biggest that takes place on Friday the 6th. In the Fortress-Castle there from 4th to 9th there will be held a Medieval Market. About parades of Moors and Christians held this month are these: San Vicente del Raspeig , Busot , and now the magnificent parade in Alcoy, declared of international tourist interest is considered as the most spectacular of all of them, the only trouble is that takes the whole day, the date 22nd to 24th, Banyeres, also very good, 22nd to 25th, Onil , Granja Rocamora. Thatʼs all for now friends.

A recipe from

Sandra’s Cookbook

which you can read online at:- www.sandrascookbook.com compiled by Sandra Bonathan (not Sandra from this magazine)

Bread Rolls Baked from a Cold Oven Start

Sometimes, we are in a hurry or perhaps we have two trays of rolls to bake and know that while one bakes the other will be over proofed. This can happen, particularly in summer when the kitchen can get a bit warmer than usual. (Certainly mine does!) My oven is about 4 yrs old and takes about 10 minutes normally to get to about 200c (390F) or so. If your oven is similar in that timing, try these out. So, what happens if you put rolls in a cold oven and switch it on? - You get good, fluffy, lovely rolls. Just don't forget to slash the tops (like I did) unless you want them to split au natural!

Dough

Ingredients

*568 ml warm water (comfortably warm to touch) *4 tbsp oil (you could use a flavoured one) *1 tsp vinegar (if you want to use an improver, this does the job) optional *1 tbsp salt (17-18g) *1 tbsp sugar1 kg Strong (bread) flour *2 tbsp instant yeast

egg wash to finish

*1 beaten egg *2 tbsp water or milk

Method

1. Put ingredients in your bowl in the order listed. If using a stand mixer, knead on speed 1 for 3 min, speed 2 for 3 min or according to machine instructions. If kneading by hand, about 10 minutes, until the dough is soft and elastic. 2. Remove the dough hook if using and cover the bowl with a plate or cling film. 3. Allow the dough to rest until doubled in size. This can take an hour or two in a cold room (you need to wear at least one sweater!) or as little as 20 minutes in a very warm one (even a T shirt is too much!) 4. Lightly flour your surface and turn out the dough. It will be full of air. 5. Use a knife or a bench knife to divide the dough into pieces. This will make 16 large rolls. 6. The easy way is to divide in half, again and again until you hit that number. 7. To shape the rolls, take a piece of dough and gently bring the outside to the middle, rotating as you do so. You will end up with something like a mushroom cap. 8. Turn it over and with both hands cup it, making it nice and neat. 9. Place on greased baking trays and cover with greased film. 10. Allow to puff up just a little, then brush with egg wash if using. 11. Use a sharp knife (serrated is fine) to slash the tops. 12. Mist with water from a spray bottle. 13. Put rolls into a COLD oven and turn on to 225-230c (435-445F). I did not use the fan setting. 14. Bake until nice and brown, mine take around 18 minutes. 15. If you have another tray of the rolls, they can go into the hot oven and will take about 15 minutes to bake. Sandra's Cookbook Š 2010

Yet more money being spent for The Regional Secretary for Infrastructure and Transport, Sanchez-BarcĂĄiztegui Vitoriano, was present at the ceremony with our Mayor Miquel Zaragoza, and other Town Hall dignateries, to inaugurate more improvements on Gran Alacant. Between Av Mediterraneao and Scandinavia Av Escandinavia and down to the sea with connections with confluent crossings, will see the removal of old pavements and also pedestrian spaces in Albacete Avenue, Great Beach, between the stretch of the avenue and street BascuĂąana Bishop Sax and Ocean Street, giving better access. Nearly 1/4 million euro has been provided by central government for the work. Our Town Hall were asked where they thought the money would be best spent, and this project was born.

This is one of the oldest streets on Gran Alacant and was in desperate need of renovation.

There will be a series of new pavements, roadways, benches, trees and will generally provide a much better area for us all.
