Hello everyone Welcome to edition number 99. Our front cover and on page 4 congratulates Loreto Cascales on her 10 years with the Santa Pola Town hall. St Patricks Day on the 17th of March started the holiday season off. We have pictures from our two Irish advertisers, who both enjoyed the day and the weekend. By the time this magazine is out the Easter holidays will have started, more people will have arrived on Gran Alacant so hopefully the businesses will have many more customers. It is really nice to see the mimosa out on the sides of the roads creating a lovely display of colour, it is a shame it doesn´t last too long. Don’t forget the cinema trips arranged for Gran Alacant on page 29. Have a good month Sandra & Barry Our little dog from the front cover has hidden herself away in the magazine, can you find her? Last month she was in the Clot.

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news, including that from our Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005. It is our perogative at the magazine, NOT to update this 2005 picture, as we all looked a great deal younger!!!

Dear friends,

I have been the councillor of Gran Alacant for 10 years. A lot of things have happened since then. Gran Alacant has changed a lot. We have plenty of services, infrastructure and improvements in the area. Parks, library, school, pavements, sports hall centre, street lights.... plenty of new things that made Gran Alacant a better place to live.

If I am sincere, it has been a very hard job. It has been very difficult to walk along this way. Most of the time, it has been frustrating and even exhausting but I must say that it has been also very satisfying and comforting when the aim was obtained and Gran Alacant had something new for its neighbourhood.

For me the most important thing are the people living here. It is very difficult to be a councillor of an area like this, with so many different people with so many different ways of thinking and cultures but, at the end of the day, the most important thing is to try to improve your lifes and your stay in Gran Alacant.

I have been trying to give the best of me with my job as a councillor. I know there are still a lot things to improve in the area and that we are now in a very difficult situation but I will be working hard to try to bring more good things for you. I apologise if sometimes I do not do my job properly in your opinion, you can be sure I did not do it consciously because I try to be fair when I take my decisions and be helpful when working.

I will be grateful to try to help you, to meet you and to speak to you at the office or in the streets of our Gran Alacant. Unfortunately, sometimes I would not be able to solve your problems directly but I will try to show you the way to sort them out sooner. Do not hesitate, you have a councillor but also a friend in me that, at least, will listen to you and, if it is in my hands, I will help you. Thanks very much for all these years because most of you have given me very good moments and experiences that will be with me the rest of my life. THANKS!

See all of you soon, Loreto Cascales Councillor of Gran Alacant

Firstly, congratulations to Loreto on her 10 year milestone. We at the magazine have much to thank her for. We have had, and hope to continue, a wonderful relationship with her. Our questions and comments for her are always met with such a friendly & helpful response. ------------------------------------------------------------------Slowly but surely the new 12,400 square metre market facility is taking place. We have printed a series of pictures this month, aimed particuarly at those not living out here. Work began in March 2012 so should be completed after around 1 year. The project is part of the Plan Trust of Valencian and will have cost around 520,000 euros. A second market day may take place if all goes well. There are approx 200 parking slots and approx room for 130 traders. -----------------------------Will there be room for us all to park on the beach car park this year, or has there been aninvasion. -----------------------

An email to the magazine..

Hi, In the February magazine we read that Red Cross in Santa Pola needed help. We have been in contact with them, but they are not interested in second hand clothes. Do you know if there is an other organisation wanting second hand clothing? Best regards Wenche Loreto phoned those concerned and they have now moved to a unit on the GA Comercial Cente which we have marked on our GA Map. This should enable them to open most mornings. If you would like to make any contributions you call make an appointment with them by phoning 965 416 150. ------------------------------------Hi Barry & Sandra We were very grateful to you when you put a mention in the GAA about the Mass at the library.

I don't know if you know that there is a hut outside the library that holds the chairs that we use for the Mass and I thought it had fallen down in the wind and the Ayuntamiento had not stood it back up again. I have now been told that every time it is put back up the youngsters who hang around there push it over again which us highly dangerous if not damaging to what's inside. May be you would like to photograph this to bring to people's attention and speak to Loreta about it. (pictured left) Obviously the area needs policing and the hut needs to be bolted down. The lovely Spanish people at Mass actually offer us their seats as there is not sufficient in the classroom. I think they are very ashamed of their youngsters, meanwhile, us grandparents!!!! are standing for nearly an hour. I wonder if these youngsters realise this.

You highlighted the recent vandalism in your latest magazine and I agree with you - the only way to combat this is to alert everyone. Regards, Norah Campbell Loreto has arranged for the Town Hall to pin the hut down when they are next working in the area. -------------------------------------------------------------------The photos (next page) show what we are all up against in trying to keep Gran Alacant clean and tidy and free from dog dirt. Who on earth can allow their dogs to soil pavements in this way without clearing it up. Patrols against this have started and fines are being issued.

8

9

Perhaps it is time to name and shame!! (picture right) Loreto phoned the police who told them that 25 fines have already been issued. ------------------------------------We were contacted by a housing comunity area where a person has set up a kind of creche in among peoples houses. The residents are very concerned about the number of children running around and being housed in this one house. Loreto mentioned that houses can be used for businesses, but only under restricted guidelines. As you probably know, hairdresses, Estate agents, Farmacias, and many more all do this. The Town Hall makes a list of very strict rules that have to be adhered to. If these are not adhered to, the licence will be refused or taken away. In the above mentioned case, this set of laws apply. Just before we went to press we were informed that this business had closed down. --------------------------------------------------------------------

MABS "Walk for Life"

The MABS Walk for Life is on Sunday 28th April and we start by the entrance of El Clot de Galvany just at the bottom of Cardiac Hill, Gran Alacant. Registration is from 9.30a.m. and the Walk begins at 10.15a.m. It is a short Walk of 4km, so all the family can enjoy it and the more athletic can walk around again. We love seeing you "in the Pink" and there is a prize for the best and most imaginative outfit. Of course we have certificates for all who enter and finish. Please look out for our Posters and leaflets. Loreto from the Council of Santa Pola supports us and arranges for the Police to be present for our safety. Also Liesl and Richard from SpanishInk support us by carrying out all our printing, all this helps us to raise money for Cancer. Please conatact Jan 966 697 754 or Angela 965 060 182 for information or Sponsor Forms. Reg. Charity No. 7261. -------------------------------------------------------------------We spoke in an earlier edition about the local football team of Elche being 10-12 points clear at the top of their league, going for promotion to La Liga. The league that includes, among others, Barcelona and Real Madrid. They are sweating a little now, after losing their last two matches ----------------------------------Have a good Easter. Meet next month for our 100th monthly edition.

11

Queridos amigos,

Sandra & Barry

MONTEMAR BOWLS AND SOCIAL CLUB (Sponsored by Super Valu) CBBA Southern League Division A For any information about joining our club or fixture details Last season saw the Matadors needing a win in their final please contact the club captain Colin Armitage. match to remain in this league. This season they have Tel: 966 619 010 Ext. 01066. excelled themselves by just narrowly missing out as champions and finished as runners-up. Well played to all the team and their supporters. CBBA Southern League Division C The Toreadors have had up and down results over the past month but did manage to finish sixth in this league. SABA Winter Triples Discovery League Picadors Well, what a great result at home for our last game of the season against La Mariner Astronauts. We were hoping for a win of at least eight points to finish above the Novilleros and this was duly accomplished. Well done to our winning teams skippered by Colin Armitage, Ted Hyman, Barry Woodfine and Diane Ridley. Also well done to the drawn team skippered by John Caiger who drew on the very last end. The losing team skippered by David Eades also played very well by enabling us to a better shot total. The end of season Binge at the local Chinese Restaurant was also a very good afternoon so well done to everyone. SABA Winter Triples Discovery League Novilleros The Novilleros had a bye this week and so could only watch how our club’s other team, the Picadors, faired. In the event the Picadors secured enough points to climb above the Novilleros in the Discovery league table. Well done to the Picadors and well done to Montemar for being able to sustain both clubs this winter season. The Novilleros should be proud of their achievements over the last couple of years. Last year, they won promotion into the Discovery League and this year have consolidated themselves into mid-table. It is also worthy of note that the Novilleros won 2-0 in their games with the Picadors. Well done Novilleros and good luck for next year. Montemar in the Winter and Berllen Leagues With one match to go Montemar will finish tenth place in the Winter League and mid table in the Berleen. Bernard Pearce Memorial Trophy On Saturday 16th March, Montemar Bowls and Social Club held their annual game in memory of our first Honorary President, Bernard Pearce, who died in 2007. This year 12 teams of 4 battled over two games of 9 ends. The eventual winners were Rowena Good, Danny Redgewell, Fred Charman and John Corbet who won both of their games and had a shot difference of plus 19. Second were the team of Ken White, Ethel Finan, Wendy Oxley and Bill Young who also won both their games but had a shot difference of plus 14. Following the game most of the players and spectators had lunch in the El Rincon Restaurant, another tradition loved by the late Bernard. Thanks to all those who took part in the event and particularly those who stayed to toast the memory of our first Honorary President. Montemar Finals 9th March – 21st March. These finals were decided on Thursday 21st March see the pictures on the right of the winners.

She gave him another sexy little smile, seductively reached into her panties and pulled out a crumpled fifty dollar bill. "Now," she said, "Have you ever seen 40,000 dollars all crumpled up?" A recipe from

Sandra’s Cookbook

which you can read online at:- www.sandrascookbook.com compiled by Sandra Bonathan (not Sandra from this magazine)

Danish Style Slices

A really easy, no fuss, sweet, tender, yeasted dough. No adding butter layers, no individual shaping, just beautiful results. Eat on day of serving or cut into portions and freeze. This dough is enough for two approx 14 x5 inch bars. I made two different toppings and two different dribble icings, one peach with cinnamon, the other raspberry. Mix and match if you like! WARNING - do not over bake or it could be dry, better to err on the under bake side. I have deliberately done this in Cups Ingredients Dough

1 tsp salt 1 cup warm milk 4 tbsp soft butter (unsalted) ½ tsp almond extract ½ tsp lemon extract 1 tbsp instant yeast 1 large egg + 2 yolks 3 ½ cups Bread Flour Topping No1 (enough for one bar) 2tbsp soft butter ½ tsp cinnamon ¼ cup flour pinch salt 1/8 cup brown sugar Peach preserves (amount to taste) Dribble icing No 1 1 tbsp cold milk ½ tsp almond extract 8 tbsp icing sugar Topping No 2 8-10 oz frozen raspberries 3 tbsp red jam Dribble icing No 2 1 tbsp lemon juice 6-8 tbsp icing sugar egg wash Beaten egg with 1 tbsp water. Method Dough

1. Mix all the ingredients together and knead until a nice soft dough is formed. If using a stand mixer, about 6-8 minutes at speed 2. It should be soft and sticky. Cover. 2.Allow dough to rest for a couple of hours, it will rise but not double. 3. Divide in half and roll out or pat out to a long rectangle. You will find it best to do this either directly onto the greased baking tray or parchment. 4. On each long side, fold over the edge to form a rim. 5. Brush with egg wash and rest dough for an hour or so. Topping No 1 1. Use a fork to make all the ingredients into a crumble. 2. Apply crumble to outer edges if using. 3. Spread jam up the centre. Topping No 2 1. Spread fruit and jam up the centre. 2. Bake at 200c for about 20 minutes until golden. 3. Cool before dribbling with icing.

AMAZING ACCESORIES!

In this article, we are going to write about a bunch of accesories which can make our pet’s life safer or healthier, apart from adding a certain dose of glamour… -Uñitas: Is your cat destroying your furniture with its claws? Does it scratch you? Are you afraid of surgery? There you have the solution: these silicon covers for cats and dogs claws. All you have to do is to glue them to the claws (the glue is included in the kit), which is completely painless, and they are a good solution, not only for keeping your house furniture safe, but also for stopping the animal from scratching itself. The covers last for a few weeks, depending on the kind of animal, and how active it is. There are lots of colors available. Website: http://www.misuñitas.es (Spanish keyboard required, due to the “ñ”!!) -Neuticles: Time to neuter your dog or cat? Worried because it won’t look “macho” never again? Neuticles produce prosthetic silicon testicles, which are implanted into the scrotum when removing the real ones (always by a Vet!!). There are lots of different sizes, and they feel like real. Never to be used in contest dogs with ectopic testicles, because it would be a fraud!! Website: www.neuticles.com They are REALLY expensive! -Doggles: Sunglasses for dogs, 100% UV-certified, specially designed for dogs. In those ones which suffer from chronic superficial keratitis becomes absolutely necessary (in those patients, the cornea, when exposed to sunlight, gets covered of melanin, a serious undesirable corneal “suntan” which may make a dog blind). We highly recommend to use them in white dogs, due to the extra skin and eyes sensitivity against sunlight they have.

68

Liliana Aldeguer Cerdán 793 English translation by Sergio Reina Esteban col 747

Website: doggles.com It’s not easy to make them accept the sunglasses. Patience! -Locator: Small and light (less than 50 gr) GPS, to be attached to the dog’s collar. Depending on the model, they may reach 30 km, and the batteries last for about 7 days. They are used normally for hunting or trekking dogs. There are also less sophisticated ones available, which only reach 120 m, very useful for cats which usually go for a walk around the urbanization. Website: www.setterbakio.com Expensive! -Invisible fences: What they do is to stop dogs and cats to get out of the garden. It consists on a sensor you attach to the collar and produces an electric or acoustic signal when the animal is getting out of the controlled perimeter. Unfortunately, it doesn’t stop other animals to get into the perimeter. Website: www.setterbakio.com Except the neuticles, we have previous experience with all these accessories, and the results have always been satisfactory (they respect the animals and are efficient). If you think about it, it’s sad that some people cannot have their cat no longer with them, because they live in a rental house and are afraid the cat start destroying doors, curtains and furniture. So, all these accessories may look funny, but they are also useful.

Despite it has nothing to do with this month article, we would like to remind everybody that registering the dog at the Town Hall is mandatory. The latest news we have is, if after 1 week the Local Police warned you, you haven’t done anything yet, a over 100 € fine will come to you via SUMA (as everyone know, impossible to avoid). You have to go to Santa Pola Town Hall, 2nd floor, “negociado”, show an updated European Pet Passport, and pay 10 € for the registration.

WHAT’S THAT? IN THE CLOT?

by Mark Etheridge

Older readers may remember the 1950’s author Stephen Potter who invented the notion of “One-upmanship” whereby a little extra knowledge could be used to your advantage in social, sporting and career matters; this idea was continued in the 1970’s with the “Bluff Your Way In…” series of books and continues today with “(Whatever) …For Dummies” – all these are a way of using a few limited facts to get you ahead of the pack. This can be applied when watching birds too, a few bits of inside information can be added to your basic knowledge to give you the appearance of an expert, and I’m here to help you.

Most people know that a small bird which flies a lot, is seen in summer, isn’t all black and doesn’t have a high-pitched screaming call (in which case it’s a Swift), and makes a mud nest on the side of your house is likely to be a Swallow. The Common (or Barn) Swallow is familiar to us in the UK, and can be seen just as easily here in Spain as well. But if you look closely, you might just have noticed that there is another bird here among the Swallows which is a little bit different. This is the Red-rumped Swallow, known as Golondrina dáurica in Spanish. It is a very successful species which breeds in a wide range from Southern Europe, through India and Asia as far east as Japan. As you can see from my photo, it has a clear reddish tinge on its neck and rump, and in most other aspects is similar to a normal swallow, but it will definitely get your visiting British Birders jumping up and down with excitement. You will often be lucky and get one flying close to you in the Clot, as they don't seem too bothered by human presence while flying about. There will probably be about one Red-rumped Swallow to every 20 normal Swallows, but since there are so many of the latter your chances of seeing a Red-rumped are quite good! It normally nests in rocky crevices and also has a penchant for old ruins and river bridges, but is increasingly found nesting in the houses around Gran Alacant. It needs water nearby, to provide mud for nest building and the insects which are attracted to damp areas, making it a valuable ally in the never-ending war against mozzies. It is gradually spreading northwards, and several are now seen each year in the UK – who knows how long it will be before it joins the influx of southern species such as Purple Heron, Little, Great and Cattle Egrets which are now regular in Britain? See you next month.
