We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, including that from a representative from the Town Hall, as we have since May 2005.

A personal message from the Councillor for Gran Alacant ...
I would like to address everyone here in our community of Gran Alacant. We find ourselves in a unique situation. It is very difficult indeed, but surely together we understand that the only way to stop the spread of this virus is by social isolation. We must understand this clearly, and we have to stay at home. Santa Pola, and Gran Alacant, will I am sure, make this effort - this sacrifice. If not for yourself, then for your relatives and your neighbours. The police are carrying out their duty to enforce the national government’s emergency regulations. I ask again, for the good of our community - please stay in your home. You can find more information and updates on the website of the local council. My thoughts are with you in these most difficult of times. Oscar Valenzuela, Gran Alacant Councillor

Q: Weeds round GA Whilst Santa Pola is Permanently being cleaned Gran Alacant appears to have been forgotten The entry road from the N332 has overgrown bushes which is becoming a hazard for motorists and the hill up from Mercadona’s to the Post Office has weeds growing onto the carriageway which has become a danger for cyclists causing them to swerve into the traffic following them
Q: Traffic visibility Hi great to see Taylor Wimpey have started building. They have erected purple steel shutters on only a third of the site? Problem is if you drive down Calle Orden Dorico to bank going down to the beach and are turning left to the beach you can't see the traffic coming down the hill.
I cannot remember the last time I saw anybody from the council tidying these areas but it is long overdue before somebody gets injured or worse Ash Q: Never ending story
BARRY’S BITS OF NEWS: Welcome to what is a very Special April Internet edition of our monthly magazine. With the lockdown starting on March 14th, it has been an awful time for us all. By the time you read the online version, things may well have changed, if not, there are still businesses out there who are able to get to help you during the shutdown, particularly food shops, doctors, pharmacies etc. Our loyal customers have been able for free to place an advert in the online edition. You will find phone numbers you may well need, plus other information for you while locked in your homes. Kind Regards, Nils
There is no need to worry, particularly if you are elderly and at home on your own, there is plenty of info for you in this edition, or just phone a friend to talk to.

Coronavirus March 14th was a day to remember here on Gran Alacant, the big shutdown due to the coronavirus. I wonder how long it will last. We hope that our printed and online version will be of help. Storms A couple of pictures of the mess down at Los Arenales after the big storm many weeks ago. It just shows how we can easily forget the aftermath and how it still effects many people.
apparent, using a wheelchair, that many of the pavements in the area of Gran Alacant and Altomar II were not fit for this purpose. Many dropped kerbs were only on one side meaning for large parts we had to use the road area, lampposts in the middle of the pavement that could not be passed and general cracked/uneven tiles in many locations. This was also the case with the mobility scooter that was hired to help access all parts of Gran Alacant. Can the councillor please advise if a accessibility survey could be conducted with the view of improving this especially in the case of lowered kerbs without the adjacent kerb being lowered. Q: Campervans With the massive amount of these vehicles camped near to Gran Alacant. Where do they get their water from, is it from our urbanisation…for free, and where is their waste poured….is it on Gran Alacant? Reply from Oscar Valenzuela: Thank you to all the readers who have sent in questions. Due to the current situation, the main focus of the town hall is the health and safety of the residents. Once this pandemic is over and we all return to our regular routines, I will do my best to answer your questions. In the meantime, I will continue to inform you of all the actions that are being put in place to contain the expansion of the Covid-19 virus in our municipality. Please stay at home and keep safe.
MEETING WITH THE DIRECTOR OF EDUCATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURES TO DISCUSS EDUCATIONAL MATTERS
The mayor Loreto Serrano, together with the councilors for Education and Gran Alacant, Trinidad Ortiz and Óscar Valenzuela, met in the 2nd week of March in Valencia with Víctor García i Tomàs, the Director General of Educational Infrastructures, to discuss various topics of interest to the municipality. The Councilor for education, Trinidad Ortiz, has asked the Director General “to prepare an action plan for all schools so that they are in perfect condition.” As a result of this, “all the schools have already begun to be valued with the municipal technician, to see what facilities they have and what they are lacking. The plan is to make a list from each one of the schools highlighting their individual needs over the next two or three years”. They want to avoid making “patch up repairs” and apply a more forward thinking approach to ensure that the money that is spent is used on integrated projects.

For example, if a large investment in heating is made in a school, then any old windows should also be replaced. The visits to schools with municipal technicians has begun. The findings will be sent to the Ministry along with a plan of works that need to be undertaken. It is expected that they will be carried out in annual phases occasionally focusing on specific schools.
Colegio Hispanidad With reference to the planned construction of the Colegio Hispanidad, they are still reviewing the reports and have found some deficiencies. These need to be rectified before final approval will be granted.
Second Primary school in Gran Alacant In relation to the Second Primary School in Gran Alacant school, “the report has been studied and analyzed”, and “it is expected to be put out to tender during the months of June or July by the Consellería”. The Mayor hopes that “in early 2021 the works will have begun. The report has been completely revised, and “if everything goes well, we will be able to commission the project after the summer so that, at the beginning of 2021, or possibly the end of 2020, construction can start ”. The construction of the second Primary School in Gran Alacant, is the responsibility of the Ministry of all procedures, who highlighted some deficiencies. It is expected that these will be rectified within a month and after that the Minister of Finance will authorize the release of funds so that construction can start. The Ministry also estimates that at the end of 2020 the construction of the second Primary School in Gran Alacant will begin.

Instituto (Secondary/High School) Gran Alacant Regarding the construction of the Gran Alacant Instituto. The project has already been approved by the Ministry, which is carrying out the necessary procedures to be able to transfer their authority to the City Council. It is expected that this should take place in the month of June. As soon as the City Council receives this authority, tenders will be received from companies wishing to undertake this project. Providing there are no procedural delays, construction could begin at the end of the year 2020, or the start of the year 2021. Interim Measures for the Gran Alacant Instituto (Secondary/High School) In the meeting they also discussed the interim solution of using portacabins to create an Instituto in Gran Alacant. It is planned that these will be in place before the new school term starts in September 2020. The Director General has reviewed all aspects of the proposed location, next to the Gran Alacant sports hall, and sees no reason why the portacabins can’t be in place by September this year. Both the Mayor and the Councilors have indicated that “if the Director General complies with everything he has told us, we are well within the deadlines.”
GRAN ALACANT HEALTH CENTRE OPEN 8:00 - 15:00 Mon - Sat The Department of the General University Hospital of Elche informs us that they have implemented a plan to reorganize resources in Primary Care so that they can continue to guarantee adequate health care for the population in all basic health areas during the state of alarm due to the coronavirus. SPECIAL CLEANING MEASURES FOLLOWING THE OUTBREAK OF THE CORONAVIRUS Urbaser Santa Pola are complying with the security protocols set by the Government and from their own company protocols and containment plans. In addition, the City Council cleaning department has ceased all non-essential work, such as: clearing, blowing and mechanical sweeping. They have also increased the frequency of washdown work which is accompanied by thorough disinfection measures. This includes cash machines, bins and the floors in front of supermarkets and pharmacies. On Monday, March 30, a meeting was held to organize the disinfection of the Santa Pola municipality. The main guidelines were as follows: The areas where people go every day should be disinfected daily. In the rest of the areas where there are fewer people, a less complex treatment will be carried out and in the places where there are no people, there will be no disinfection. However, they will try to reach as many places as possible.

Ah! Retirement . . . It is important for men to remember that, as women grow older, it becomes harder for them to maintain the same quality of housekeeping as when they were younger. When you notice this, try not to yell at them. Some are oversensitive, and there's nothing worse than an oversensitive woman. My name is Roger Lesch. Let me relate how I handled the situation with my wife, Peggy. When I retired a few years ago, it became necessary for Peggy to get a full-time job, along with her part-time job, both for extra income and for the health benefits that we needed. Shortly after she started working, I noticed she was beginning to show her age. I usually get home from the golf club about the same time she gets home from work. Although she knows how hungry I am, she almost always says she has to rest for half an hour or so before she starts dinner. I don't yell at her. Instead, I tell her to take her time and just wake me when she gets dinner on the table. I generally have lunch each day in the Men's Grille at the Golf Club, so eating out is not an option in the evening. I'm ready for some home-cooked grub when I hit that door. She used to do the dishes as soon as we finished eating. But now, it's not unusual for them to sit on the table for several hours after dinner. I do what I can by diplomatically reminding her several times each evening that they won't clean themselves. I know she really appreciates this, as it does seem to motivate her to get them done, before she goes to bed. Another symptom of aging is complaining, I think. For example, she will say that it is difficult for her to find time to pay the monthly bills during her lunch hour. But, boys, we take 'em for better or worse, so I just smile and offer encouragement. I tell her to stretch it out over two, or even three days. That way, she won't have to rush so much. I also remind her that missing lunch completely now and then wouldn't hurt her any (if you know what I mean). I like to think tact is one of my strong points. When doing simple jobs, she seems to think she needs more rest periods. For example, she had to take a break when she was only half-finished mowing the front lawn. I try not to make a scene. I'm a fair man... I tell her to fix herself a nice, big, cold glass of freshly squeezed lemonade and just sit for a while. And, as long as she is making one for herself, she may as well make one for me, too. I know that I probably look like a saint in the way I support Peggy. I'm not saying that showing this much patience & consideration is easy. Many men will find it difficult. Some will find it impossible !!!! Nobody knows better than I do how frustrated women get as they get older. However, guys, if you even use just use a little more tact and less criticism of your aging wife because of this article, I will consider that writing it was well worthwhile. After all, we are put on this earth to help each other. EDITOR'S NOTE: Roger Lesch died suddenly on January 31, of a perforated rectum. The police report says he was found with a Calloway extra-long 50-inch Big Bertha Driver II golf club jammed up his rear end, with barely 5 inches of grip showing and a sledge hammer laying nearby. His wife Peggy was arrested and charged with murder. The all-woman jury took only 10 minutes to find her Not Guilty - - accepting her defence that Roger, somehow without looking, accidentally sat down on his golf club. A hole in one, so to speak !!!!

SARS epidemic, but the case fatality rate is lower.
CORONAVIRUS
Symptoms of COVID-19
Coronaviruses are a family of viruses that normally only affect animals but can also infect people. Their symptoms range from the common cold to more serious illnesses, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS-CoV), and the coronavirus causing Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS-CoV) The new coronavirus is called SARS-CoV-2, and the disease that causes SARS-CoV-2 is called COVID-19. COVID-19: In late December 2019, the first cases of a new coronavirus were reported in the city of Wuhan (China). Since then, the number of those infected by the virus has been continuously increasing and its transmission from person to person has accelerated. Wuhan's reported cases of pneumonia already far exceed those of the
28
The most common symptoms include fever, cough, and feeling short of breath. In some cases there may also be symptoms of diarrhea and abdominal pain. In more severe cases, the infection can cause pneumonia, severe difficulty breathing, kidney failure, and even death. The most serious cases generally occur in people of advanced age or who suffer from some other disease such as heart, lung or immunity problems and those with lowered body defenses.
How is COVID-19 spread?
Like other infections caused by similar viruses, transmission is through close contact with respiratory secretions generated by a sick person's cough or sneeze. These secretions infect another person if they come in contact with their eyes nose or mouth. Also if an infected person touches his nose, mouth or eyes, and subsequently touches a surface, the virus stays on that surface for hours.
What can I do to protect myself?
Generic individual measures of protection against respiratory diseases include frequent hand hygiene (washing with soap and water or alcoholic solutions), especially after direct contact with sick people or
PLAZA MAYOR
their environment; avoid close contact with people who show signs of a respiratory condition, such as a cough or sneeze; keep a distance of approximately one meter with people who have symptoms of acute respiratory infection; Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue if you need to cough or sneeze and wash your hands. These measures, also protect against other illnesses like the flu. At this time in Spain there is an increase in cases of coronavirus infections, which has led the authorities to take measures such as limiting freedom of movement (staying at home) to protect the population from contagion. You should also avoid being at distances of less than a meter with other people and gatherings are banned.
WHAT TO DO IF YOU THINK YOU HAVE COVID-19 • If you have a fever / low fever in addition to a cough, do not leave home for 14 days
• Drink water, take Paracetamol and rest to relieve symptoms • Watch your symptoms and do not go to the emergency room
tested for coronavirus. • They will assess your case and decide if it's worth doing an x-ray and blood tests. Depending on the results, you will go home, or stay in the hospital under observation. What is home isolation if I have COVID19? • You stay in a room for individual use, well ventilated and with the door closed • Use an exclusive bathroom if possible • Communicate with family members by phone. • Wash your hands frequently • Clothes should be washed separately, and be collected in a sealed bag • If you need to leave the room, you need to wear a surgical mask • Avoid contact with the elderly, pregnant women or those with chronic diseases • Wash dishes and cutlery separately • Disinfect surfaces with bleach diluted with water
When should I call 112?
If, in addition to cough and fever, any of the following symptoms appear: • Difficulty breathing • Diarrhea / vomiting • Major discomfort
Most cases of COVID19 have a good outcome. If you want more information, visit the official pages of the Spanish Ministry of Health. Remember that the most important thing for the reduction of infections is prevention.
KEEP CALM 1.Call the emergency number for your community (Valencian Community +34 900 300 555) Stay calm since in COVID-19 does not cause acute or sudden respiratory distress. The feeling of shortness of breath usually appears little by little and you will be seen in time.
Hand washing, do not touch your face, avoid public places and avoid close contact with people who may be sick. Avoid travel if it is not strictly necessary and follow the recommendations of the authorities.

“Rosquillas” Let’s Start! 1. Put the yeast and salt in the water and mix well, until they have completely melted.
Hello my friends, It has been a very difficult time for all of us all around the world, we must be strong and caring. I’ve been lucky as I am with my family but many people are not. Look after the ones you love but also help the strangers as you don’t know what they are going through. I have been locked in the house and helping my sister with my 2 nephews and we’ve been keeping busy cooking sweeties. Rosquillas we call and they are also vegan. Hope you enjoy it. Mayka x
2. In a bowl, put the flour with the sugar and the lemon or orange zest. 3. We are adding the water little by little and we are kneading a few minutes. 4. Add the oil and continue kneading until the dough begins to detach from the bowl. 5. Let it rest in a place where no air currents pass, until it doubles the volume (approximately 30 to 45 min, since if it is hot it rises earlier, if it is cold, it costs a little more). What I do is put it in the microwave (not working, of course) or in the oven off. 6. We take a piece of dough, we extend it, leaving a thickness of half a centimeter. OLD FRIENDS Two elderly ladies had been friends for many decades. Over the years, they had shared all kinds of activities and adventures. Lately, their activities had been limited to meeting a few times a week to play cards. One day, they were playing cards when one looked at the other and said, "Now don't get mad at me... I know we've been friends for a long time but I just can't think of your name. I've thought and thought, but I can't remember it. Please tell me what your name is." Her friend glared at her. For at least three minutes she just stared and glared at her. Finally she said, "How soon do you need to know?"

FINDING A LITTLE INNER PEACE Hi all, welcome to April, a time when we should all be enjoying springtime and new beginnings…new beginnings are definitely happening … we were just faced with what can only be described as the most surreal event of our lifetimes and we can only hope it doesn’t happen again, our country and a lot more around the globe completely shut down due to the pandemic that spread over the world. I completely appreciate people worrying where they are high risk, but whilst worrying can also add to our immune system breakdowns … and for those who have very little or no immune systems due to chronic illness then I just pray you are sat reading my blog this month… I have been sending Reiki daily to each and every single one of you. What I personally have learned during this time is the togetherness it has actually brought upon us as a community, without the ability to be in each other’s company we can only be thankful for telephones and internet which has helped us raise the spirit on our darkest days. I did try my hardest to stay away from the negative side of social media yet some days I felt drawn into the ignorance that I didn’t want to partake in but found myself joining in on some occasion, that alone was a valuable lesson for me, one that I know that I don’t want to
be a part of in my future and had to learn a lot of self-control that I thought I already had, but clearly we all have lots to learn. So whilst the world was full of experts and specialists on the media sites, does it not teach us that none of us are experts or specialists, that we all have a lot to learn, that it doesn’t really matter what certificate or PhD for that matter you may hold, does it actually mean anything at all if you promote an unkind manner in your life. Kindness is far more valuable than any degree, or certificate, kindness spreads so much further than the arrogance of know

it all’s. If you are not doing your job or living your life with your whole heart and displaying a kindness to your existing earth walkers, I suggest you start now. The community where we live in have witnessed so much respect for one another during this period and that made my heart sing on the days when I could have strung up my kids quite easily. Yes, we had to act with complete caution, and we did with nothing but respect for one another, and mother nature had time to heal a little. So, what happens if you are still worrying about leaving the house? When we feed worry to ourselves frequently our subconscious mind starts thinking this is a “normal” action and before we know it anxiety has kicked in and completely taken over. The saying “mind over matter” could not be truer than just your typical “quote” our minds thoughts become our brain/bodies matter, regardless of what age/stage/illness we are experiencing our mind is amazingly powerful. As Dr. Joe Dispenza says “we are riding on the back of a giant…and it’s a free ride” our minds are so powerful, the thoughts we feed it changes the body and its reaction to things. When anxiety kicks in our bodies natural fight or flight mode takes over…choose your thoughts wisely. Your thoughts become things, and the society that we are accustomed to playing a part in is managing to control a huge amount of people’s thoughts… Little things can make a big impact: • Spend less time on social media, enjoy real life more • Stop reading newspapers as soon as you wake up in the morning and watching the news before you sleep, this sends lots of negative signals at the most critical times of the day • Keep a regular bedtime routine • Do a little daily exercise, however little it is
• Wake up everyday with 3 things to be grateful for • Smile • Learn simple breathing techniques, if you want to know some simple ones email me and I will happily teach you my “magic 3” Know the difference between the fact and the limiting belief. Facts cannot be argued with, limiting beliefs (what your anxiety feeds you) can. So, the good news is, limiting beliefs can be changed and you gain your control. If you like to read some selfhelp books, I cannot recommend Dr. Joe Dispenza Evolve the Brain (the science of changing your mind) enough! It can be quite deep when he talks about the quantum physics and the different parts of the brain, filled with scientific facts from one of my most favourite teachers. If you don’t like to read, it is available on audible and if you don’t have audible I will happily send you it free as you don’t need to sign up but can get a free recommendation to listen to. So, let me know and I will happily send it your way. It will change your life. You can even get Alexa reading it to you whilst you cook. And please remember FREE consultations as always at The Reiki Room Mind Clinic for any little unwanted behaviours you may have. Contact me for any info.

DRAMA IN A TEACUP Thank you Joanne Margereson ... One click away It wasn’t just the fire roaring in the inglenook that made the house feel warmer than it had in a long time. Sara carefully laid the scrubbed pine table in the kitchen and arranged plump seat pads on the assortment of chairs picked up from markets. Nothing matched but that was how she liked it, every piece of crockery, glassware picked because she saw something in it that appealed to her. As soon as Sara heard car tyres on the gravel she was at the front door to let Julia and Tom in, Julia craning her neck as soon as Sara opened it. The closed living room door met with consternation. “That’ll teach you for being nosy,” Tom grinned at her fondly before kissing Sara and handing her a bottle of wine. “Not nosy,” Julia protested giving Sara a quick hug and making towards the door, “I just want to make sure this new chap is good enough for my best friend.” Sara slid in front of her blocking her way. “You know the short list I said I’d drawn up?” “I’ve been trying to guess which one you went for,” she whispered trying to stifle a giggle. “I rather liked the sound of soldier boy but then again…” “I just couldn’t make a decision,” Sara told her, “so I decided to invite all of them.”
for sending us your story “Have you got your own sort of Blind Date thing going on?” Sara grinned at the shock on their faces. “It’s your fault Julia,” she told her, “If you remember it was you who pushed me into the whole internet dating thing.” Two months had passed when Julia had cried undiluted chardonnay the chilly living room predicament.

“You need to reach out to people Sara,” she’d woozily implored. “It’s all very well, running your own business from home but you need to make contact.” She’d put her wine glass down so that she could smack her hands together in case Sara wasn’t sure what ‘contact’ sounded like. “You have endless opportunities to meet people,” she’d continued. “With all the antique fairs and markets you go to. It’s not like you’ve got two heads or anything and when you try you can look really attractive.” Even through her wine induced fog, Sara was getting defensive. “For your information,” she snapped, “when I’m at fairs I’m looking for things to buy, not at the person selling them. This house doesn’t run on thin air you know.”
Julia stepped back from the door in horror. “You’re joking right? Are you telling me you’ve got five guys sitting in there? Together? Are you mad?”
Julia held up her hands in triumph. “See,” she said “exactly, you’re getting annoyed and that’s because you can see that I’m right. You’re lonely and isolated in this big old house with no one to share it with.
Even Tom was looking uncomfortable.
“I know just what you need to do,” Julia

... One click away by Joanne Margeresen, daughter of Sandra and Barry Lane had said jumping up and knocking over her empty glass. “Internet dating.” Sara had held her hands up. “No,” she’d said firmly, standing to block Julia’s path to her computer. “Look what happened when you tried it. Your computer was scrap after that virus you downloaded with the details of the ‘fireman with a good sense of humour’.” “I think you’re forgetting that I met Tom as a result,” she replied still intent on getting past Sara to the desk. “That was not through internet dating,” Sara argued. “Meeting Tom when you fell over in the computer repair shop does not constitute internet dating.” Trying to stop Julia on a mission was like trying to stop a rhino on a charge and she sat down heavily at the desk before tapping various websites in with her perfect red nails. “These will all be stored in your history,” she told Sara. “Make sure you register with at least one of them.” Not long after that, Sara had called a taxi and bundled Julia off home, back to Tom who would help her to bed and have black coffee and aspirin ready in the morning. The old farmhouse had felt much bigger and colder when she’d gone and finishing the last dregs in the bottle had all been contributory factors to Sara sitting at the computer despite herself. She’d clicked into her history on the computer and one site had caught her attention straight away. Tom looked ready to get back in the car and drive away as quickly as he could. Julia grabbed Sara by the elbow and propelled her into the kitchen. Tom followed, wanting to be as far away from the living room as possible. Grabbing the bottle of wine from
him she gathered up two glasses and then a third almost as an after thought. Heading for the sofas at the end of the room she opened the bottle and sloshed in the wine. “Sit!” Tom and Sara both sat. “Honestly Sara,” she began, her hand shaking slightly, “what has got into you? You go from living here practically like a nun to suddenly inviting half of AOL to dinner?” She flung her red hair dramatically. “I’ve told you about most of them,” Sara said remembering how excited she’d been when she’d come over to hear all about her first date, “and don’t forget you’re mainly responsible for this.” “Me!” Julia looked aghast, banging her fist to her chest. “It’s alright Julia,” Sara laughed. “I’m so glad you suggested the whole internet dating thing. I haven’t had so much fun in a long time.” Sara’s dates had all been so different. She’d gone walking on the beach with Luke, athletic, with chocolate eyes and an unexpected gentleness, while the town carnival was in full swing when she’d met with Connor. He was ex-army, strong and unflappable although, as she’d found out, a sucker for candy floss. Charlie was the joker (there was always a joker wasn’t there?) Rough and ready, every part of him shouted ‘Here I am world, this is me.’ His black hair stood in spikes and he’d had everyone in the pub around them in stitches. Riley was heart meltingly honest, refusing to apologise for his unconventional looks but proving that beauty really is only skin deep. It was eye opening, watching how people reacted to him as they’d sat on the park bench after feeding the ducks.

DRAMA IN A TEACUP ... One click away Last was Ben, kind with steel grey eyes that peered out from behind a floppy chestnut fringe. Although the attraction was undeniable, he was the one Sara had the most reservations about. She took the wine glass out of Julia’s hand. “They’re all waiting for us,” she said, “They’ll think us really rude sitting out here.” Julia opened her mouth to argue but Sara held up her hands. “Do I have to drag you into the living room?” She fixed Julia with what she hoped was a glare to rival one of hers. Flummoxed, she stood, smoothing down the coat that she was obviously not going to take off and gestured to Tom that he’d better be close behind her. Sara swung the heavy latch door open wide and held out her arm to usher them both in. “I’d like to introduce you to Luke, Conner, Riley, Charlie and Ben. Guys, I’d like you to meet my two very good friends, Julia and Tom.” Ben got up from the sofa, his hand outstretched, his unruly fringe swinging in a way that made Sara’s heart skip. Luke the greyhound remained by the fire, lifting his elegant head but unwilling to leave the warmth of the hearth. Charlie the jack russell launched straight for Tom, wagging his tail so hard that he came across the room sideways until his little paws collided with Tom’s knees. Connor the german shepherd presented himself calmly to Julia, his tawny eyes ever watchful, while Riley the beagle with the missing ear and eye stayed by Ben, gentle but wary, the product of an environment Sara hoped he’d be able to forget about in time.

Sara thought it was the first time she’s ever known Julia lost for words. She put her arms around her and kissed her. “This is all your doing,” she told her friend, walking over to Ben where he slipped his arm around Sara’s waist. “After you’d gone home that night, I did go into the computers history and had a look at a couple of the websites but there was already one there that I looked at instead. Do you remember the rescue centre where I got Bob from?” Julia looked blank at first and then said, “Your old collie Bob?” Recall came back. “Course, dear old Bob.” She shook her head. “That’s going back a bit.” “Well I still had the website on the computer. All of these guys were on there, waiting for homes.” Julia was smiling now, her old confident self coming back. She laughed and pointed at Ben. “What, even him?” “Ben looks after the dogs,” Sara explained. “We used to go to school together and we got talking. We’ve had a lovely time taking the dogs out and getting to know them. How could I possibly choose just one and turn the rest down?” Tom laughed. “Looks like they’ve all found a good home then,” he said, clapping Ben on the shoulder. “What about you then Ben? Has she taken you in too?” Sara punched Tom playfully and winked at Ben. “He might just need a bit more house training before he comes to stay.”

WHAT IS THE CORONA/ COVID-19 VIRUS REALLY TEACHING US? Hi all, During this indescribable rollercoaster that we are still on across the globe, this month we decided to share the this heartwarming quote found across the internet which is worth a share ... We have been overwhelmed with a lot of understandably negative news sweeping our nation and it is so very easy to get us all into a very uneasy state of anxiety...leaving the house can feel so incredibly daunting...and we need to keep the faith that we will overcome this. More than ever we need to keep a positive mindset and tap into something that may be new to many of us...something that we know we need to start understanding a little more...away from the society which has built us, instead stripping it back to who we really are...by using the law of positive effect.
What is the Corona/ Covid-19 Virus Really Teaching us? I’m a strong believer that there is a spiritual purpose behind everything that happens, whether that is what we perceive as being good or being bad. As I meditate upon this, I want to share with you what I feel the Corona/ Covid-19 virus is really doing to us: 1) It is reminding us that we are all equal, regardless of our culture, religion, occupation, financial situation or how famous we are. This disease treats us all equally, perhaps we should to. If you don’t believe me, just ask Tom Hanks.
64
2) It is reminding us that we are all connected and something that affects one person has an effect on another. It is reminding us that the false borders that we have put up have little value as this virus does not need a passport. It is reminding us, by oppressing us for a short time, of those in this world whose whole life is spent in oppression. 3) It is reminding us of how precious our health is and how we have moved to neglect it through eating nutrient poor manufactured food and drinking water that is contaminated with chemicals upon chemicals. If we don’t look after our health, we will, of course, get sick. 4) It is reminding us of the shortness of life and of what is most important for us to do,

which is to help each other, especially those who are old or sick. Our purpose is not to buy toilet roll. 5) It is reminding us of how materialistic our society has become and how, when in times of difficulty, we remember that it’s the essentials that we need (food, water, medicine) as opposed to the luxuries that we sometimes unnecessarily give value to. 6) It is reminding us of how important our family and home life is and how much we have neglected this. It is forcing us back into our houses so we can rebuild them into our home and to strengthen our family unit. 7) It is reminding us that our true work is not our job, that is what we do, not what we were created to do. Our true work is to look after each other, to protect each other and to be of benefit to one another. 8) It is reminding us to keep our egos in check. It is reminding us that no matter how great we think we are or how great others think we are, a virus can bring our world to a standstill. 9) It is reminding us that the power of freewill is in our hands. We can choose to cooperate and help each other, to share, to give, to help and to support each other or we can choose to be selfish, to hoard, to look after only our self. Indeed, it is difficulties that bring out our true colors. 10) It is reminding us that we can be patient, or we can panic. We can either understand that this type of situation has happened many times before in history and will pass, or we can panic and see it as the end of the world and, consequently, cause ourselves more harm than good. 11) It is reminding us that this can either be
an end or a new beginning. This can be a time of reflection and understanding, where we learn from our mistakes, or it can be the start of a cycle which will continue until we finally learn the lesson we are meant to. 12) It is reminding us that this Earth is sick. It is reminding us that we need to look at the rate of deforestation just as urgently as we look at the speed at which toilet rolls are disappearing off of shelves. We are sick because our home is sick. 13) It is reminding us that after every difficulty, there is always ease. Life is cyclical, and this is just a phase in this great cycle. We do not need to panic; this too shall pass. 14) Whereas many see the Corona/ Covid-19 virus as a great disaster, I prefer to see it as a *great corrector* ! It is sent to remind us of the important lessons that we seem to have forgotten and it is up to us if we will learn them or not.

Alfafara - Cova de Bolumini Cabeçó de Mariola
Driving Time: 70 mins Walking Time: 2 hours/7km Google maps directions: Albergue Font De Tarragó, 03838, Plaza Constitución, 7A, 03838 Alfafara, Alicante My name is Heidi and I come from Helsinki, Finland. As we are now living in lockdown, I find comfort in researching online new mountains and nature parks for future hikes. I also like reminiscing with the pictures from our former hikes. This one being one of those. Sierra de Mariola is quite close to Gran Alacant and has many options for routes. We’ve been there before in January issue when we walked around Barranc del Cint. That was quite an easy walk, so this month we explore it for the more adventures hikers. Keep Sierra de Mariola in mind for the future when we have permission to go out to enjoy nature again.
you drive there. The path continues uphill as a really bad condition dirt road. We actually had to move to the bushes to let one car pass us. You can see the red/yellow/ white stripes on the roadside. Remember if there’s a painted X that indicates which way NOT to go.
This hike was not an all the way through marked route, so I’ll try to do my best to explain it, as it was an amazing experience. I’d advice to have trekking poles for this hike.
The start of the route is quite steep. After about 500 meters you’ll see an info signpost on your right side. You’ll also see “Senda dels Ibers” signs that we are following.
We parked our car next to the football court in Font del Tarragó, Alfafara. There’s place for few cars and more space along the road
Once you come to a signpost that has route GR 330 signs and PR CV 370 signs, follow the sign that indicates to the Camping de

Their work shows us what life was like in the area during the Pre-Roman era. Mariola for just few hundred meters. Soon you’ll come to crossroads with “Senda dels Ibers” signs and bigger info sign. In this intersection you choose to go left and walk between the houses up to the hill. (See picture!) After the houses the path becomes smaller and you’ll walk along the trees uphill until you reach the top. The path will take you over the top to the other side of the mountain which is more adventures side to walk on. From there you descend a bit until you come to the Cova de Bolumini on your right side. After the caves you continue to go down until you see the signposts taking you to the top of the mountain Cabeçó de Mariola at 1049 meters. You can see Bocairent and Ontinyent from up there. And I’d think all the way to the sea on a clear day. “Senda dels Ibers” is done by the University of Alicante and it’s marked with explanatory panels (in Spanish). You can experience

CHECK LIST
Always when going on hikes check that:
• Your Mobile Phone is fully charged • Water - climbing up is hard job & you will need • Snacks (Remember to take all the garbage back down with you!) • Have good shoes for walking • Have small first aid kit with you • Have layered clothes. Up hill might be very windy and cold, even on a warm day. Coming down might be chilly, so extra dry t-shirt to change into if needed is not a bad ide • Always tell someone where you are going and when you’ll approx. be coming back

Out & About with Star & Ashlee “Staying in” with Star & Ashlee ... Hi all, normally we would be writing about somewhere fun we have been whilst Out and About, however due to the necessary “Stay at Home” rules we thought we would share how we have been coping with being in lockdown. This unique situation has meant that Ashlee and I have had some really good discussions about the importance of hand washing, social distancing and how this particular virus “works”. We have also talked a lot about our worries and fears about the situation and how those around us and family back in the UK might be affected. Like the rest of us, Ashlee has also been scared about whether anyone we know will get the virus and if they will be ok. I have talked to her openly and honestly about the situation but emphasised that the majority of people who get the virus will be ok. One of the nice things that has happened is lots more virtual contact with our friends and family via Facebook Messenger or WhatsApp video calls. This has helped a lot and Ashlee has especially enjoying chatting and dancing with her cousin virtually. Ashlee has also had to do work from school which has been a little challenging for me as the subjects are Maths, Spanish Language, Valencian Language and Natural Science,
80
which is also in Valencian! So, in order to help with the stress we’ve been doing some other fun activities. Being a fan of crafts and making things from our recycling, Ashlee has enjoyed making virtual money boxes for our snack allowances and glue and glitter paperweights. She has also created her own word searches, puzzles and treasure hunts around the house for me to complete. We have also played many board and card games and as big Harry Potter fans we have enjoyed working on the construction of her Hogwarts Grand Hall Lego set and
continue to read the books before bed. Ashlee has also had fun doing exercises and yoga on the roof, when it hasn’t been raining. Ashlee also loves to read David Walliams books so we were delighted when he decided to release a 15-20 minute Audio book on

morning workout his website every day at 11am (UK time). As you can imagine his narrative is great and has made us laugh out loud. As we saw the amazing performance of Cirque du Soleil’s Totem in Alicante we were thrilled when they announced that they would be releasing a special performance online. It featured awe inspiring moments from their shows Kurios, O and Luzia and Ashlee and I enjoyed watching it on our mobiles.
roof-clapping
We have also had some virtual animals in the house, thanks to the 3D images on google and are looking forward to visiting some museums, zoos and aquariums around the world with online virtual tours. Especially as some are showing animal feeding times and giving special talks. The highlight of every day happens at 1955/7:55pm when we go up to the roof or on rainy days out to the porch, and join all our neighbours applauding to show our support and appreciation of all the health,
pharmacy, supermarket and other front line workers. We both really enjoy this and it really does bring a sense of solidarity, the streets might be quiet all day but at 8pm we are all there together. We were telling everyone in the UK how much it lifts your spirits and they are also applauding on Thursday evenings at 8pm to show their support of the NHS, agreeing that it really does give you a boost. At the moment we don’t know how much longer we will have to “Stay at Home” but want to send our love to you all and hope that everyone stays safe. Together we will get through this. Until next time, Star & Ashlee xxx

WE ALL NEED A TREE! I hired a plumber to help me restore an old farmhouse, and after he had just finished a rough first day on the job: a flat tire made him lose an hour of work, his electric drill quit and his ancient one ton truck refused to start. While I drove him home, he sat in stony silence. On arriving, he invited me in to meet his family. As we walked up the front walk, he paused briefly at a small tree, touching the tips of the branches with both hands. When opening the door he underwent an amazing transformation.. His face was wreathed in smiles and he hugged his two small children and gave his wife a kiss. Afterward he walked me to the car. We passed the tree and my curiosity got the better of me. I asked him about what I had seen him do earlier. 'Oh, that's my trouble tree,' he replied 'I know I can't help having troubles on the job, but one thing's for sure, those troubles don't belong in the house with my wife and the children.. So I just hang them up on the tree every night when I come home and ask God to take care of them. Then in the morning I pick them up again.' 'Funny thing is,' he smiled,' when I come out in the morning to pick 'em up, there aren't nearly as many as I remember hanging up Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we are here we might as well dance.

Childhood Sweethearts An elderly couple was celebrating their sixtieth anniversary. The couple had married as childhood sweethearts and had moved back to their old neighborhood after they retired. Holding hands, they walked back to their old school. It was not locked, so they entered, and found the old desk they'd shared, where Jerry had carved I love you, Sally. On their way back home, a bag of money fell out of an armored car, practically landing at their feet. Sally quickly picked it up and, not sure what to do with it, they took it home. There, she counted the money - fifty thousand euros! Jerry said, We've got to give it back. Sally said, Finders keepers. She put the money back in the bag and hid it in their attic.
90
The next day, two police officers were canvassing the neighborhood looking for the money, and knocked on their door. Pardon me, did either of you find a bag that fell out of an armored car yesterday? Sally said, No. Jerry said, Sheยนs lying. She hid it up in the attic. Sally said, Don't believe him, heยนs getting senile The agents turned to Jerry and began to question him. One said: Tell us the story from the beginning. Jerry said, Well, when Sally and I were walking home from school yesterday .. The first police officer turned to his partner and said, Wereoutta here!

Animals as Teachers By Jemma “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged in the way in which it treats its animals”. Gandhi We have our memories of bird flu, awful foot and mouth , and the mad cow disease that most likely started by feeding animals food made of themselves.
Everyone and everything is facing their own challenges at this time. One positive outcome is that it can be a time to reflect and contemplate ourselves and the world we live in.
I was permitted to go help feed the horses the day I wrote this where once again they are standing in water and mud, and it was raining AGAIN. As I got soaked and muddy helping feed 120 animals with hay and individual feeds, and the drive back in pouring rain seeing not a car in sight, I couldn’t
We maybe can pause to think of our own impact in the world and whether it is time to make changes such as using less water, ( if it’s yellow let it mellow , if it’s brown flush it down) consuming less, recycling more, buying organic if you can, using ecological products, eating less meat… It seems that this is especially a time to reflect on the animals and living things that dwell with us on this planet, and to refresh our connection. As we know the potential start of this virus was the eating of all manner of raw animals and insects, and of keeping live and dead animals in close proximity.

In brighter times maybe you might think about taking in a rescue animal to join you in your home. ,my two dogs and cats have literally kept me sane over this period. I leave with part of the peace prayer, often attributed to St Francis of Assisi, patron saint of Animals but most likely not his words, though very apt for these times...
stop the tears flowing and the words of the Pink Floyd song , a different time, a different situation… what have we done?… somebody shout, someone scream, what happened to the dream? As the shut down businesses so sadly and desperately affect so many people and their livelihoods, we can, maybe, as well take a moment to reflect on the fact that the charity shops support the livelihoods of the animals that they are run for, and hence money for food for them will soon become a real concern. With SAT kennels closed, the dogs are like us in enforced isolation … At Easy Horse Care Centre over 120 horses and donkeys still need to be fed and watered, and with all their charity shops closed and Open Days cancelled we can

The Bagpiper Very moving... I love this story. Lay down whatever is bothering you, breathe in the fresh air and LISTEN to this story. Time is like a river. You cannot touch the water twice, because the flow that has passed will never pass again. Enjoy every moment of life. As a bagpiper, I play many gigs. Recently I was asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man. He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper's cemetery in the Highlands. As I was not familiar with the area, I got lost and, being a typical man, I didn't stop for directions. I finally arrived an hour late and saw that the funeral guy had evidently gone and the hearse was nowhere in sight. There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch. I felt badly and apologised to the men for being late. I went to the side of the grave and looked down and the vault lid was already in place. I didn't know what else to do, so I started to play. The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around. I played out my heart and soul for this man with no family and friends. I played like I've never played before, for this homeless man. And as I played "Amazing Grace", the workers began to weep. They wept, I wept, we all wept together. When I finished, I packed up my bagpipes and started for my car. Though my head was hung low, my heart was full. As I opened the door to my car, I heard one of the workers say, "I never seen anything like that before, and I've been putting in septic tanks for twenty years." Apparently, I'm still lost ‌ it's a man thing.

Three men - an American, a Japanese and an Irishman - were sitting naked in a sauna. Suddenly there was a beeping sound. The American pressed his forearm and the beep stopped. The others looked at him questioningly. "That was my pager," he said. "I have a microchip under the skin
A few minutes later a phone rang. The Japanese fellow lifted his palm to his ear. When he finished, he explained, "That was my mobile phone. I have a microchip in my hand." The Irishman felt decidedly low tech and, not wanting to be outdone, he decided he had to do something just as impressive. He stepped out of the sauna and went to the bathroom. He returned with a piece of toilet paper hanging from his behind. The others raised their eyebrows and stared at him. "It appears that you've got a bit a of a stuck paper problem there," pointed the amused American. "Well, will you look at that? I must be getting a fax!" Declared the Irishman. An elderly spinster called the lawyer's office and told the receptionist she wanted to see the lawyer about having a will prepared.
you will be able to have a funeral that will certainly be noticed and will leave a lasting impression on anyone who may not have taken much note of you! But tell me," he continued, "What would you like to do with the remaining £5,000?"
The receptionist suggested they set up an appointment for a convenient time for the spinster to come into the office.
The spinster replied, "As you know, I've never married, I've lived alone almost my entire life, and in fact I've never slept with a man. Before I die, I'd like you to use the £5,000 to arrange for a man to sleep with me."
The woman replied, "You must understand, I've lived alone all my life, I rarely see anyone, and I don't like to go out. Would it be possible for the lawyer to come to my house?" The receptionist checked with the attorney who agreed and he went to the spinster's home for the meeting to discuss her estate and the will. The lawyer's first question was, "Would you please tell me what you have in assets and how you'd like them to be distributed under your will?" She replied, "Besides the furniture and accessories you see here, I have £40,000 in my savings account at the bank." "Tell me," the lawyer asked, "how would you like the £40,000 to be distributed?" The spinster said, "Well, as I've told you, I've lived a reclusive life, people have hardly ever noticed me, so I'd like them to notice when I pass on. I'd like to provide £35,000 for my funeral." The lawyer remarked, "Well, for £35,000
"This is a very unusual request," the lawyer said, adding, "but I'll see what I can do to arrange it and get back to you." That evening, the lawyer was at home telling his wife about the eccentric spinster and her weird request. After thinking about how much she could do around the house with £5,000 and with a bit of coaxing, she got her husband to agree to provide the service himself. She said, "I'll drive you over tomorrow morning, and wait in the car until you're finished." The next morning, she drove him to the spinster's house and waited while he went into the house. She waited for over an hour, but her husband didn't come out. So she blew the car horn. Shortly, the upstairs bedroom window opened, the lawyer stuck his head out and yelled, "Pick me up tomorrow, she's going to let the City bury her!"
SLEEPING PILL
A woman was visiting her elderly father in a nursing home. He seemed brighter than usual and told her. “I have been sleeping really well lately! I think it’s the new medication they have been giving me.” “What’s that, then?” asked the daughter. “Well, every night they give me a glass of warm milk and a Viagra tablet”. “Viagra! Why are they giving you that?!” “ I don’t know” said the old man. On her way out, the daughter asked the nurse about the new sleeping aids. “The warm milk helps him sleep!” explained the nurse.” “Yes, I understand that, but what’s the Viagra for?”“Oh” said the nurse, “that’s to stop him rolling out of bed”!

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? TRUST US
by Mark Etheridge
REED WARBLERS
Why am I showing you two pictures of the same bird? Actually, I’m not, they are different species, although closely related, and both will arrive in the Clot in some numbers this month. In fact, a few have already arrived in March from their winter quarters in Sub-Saharan Africa, and both species are making their presence felt.
are anywhere near the reedbeds in the Clot your ears will be assaulted by a “Karra karra chirr chirr peep peep gurk gurk gurk twee twee” and variations thereof. Unlike the RW, the GRW often climbs up a tall reed during the course of this performance, and you can spot it fairly easily when it gets to the top of the stem.
So (if my esteemed editors have got it right!) on the left we have the Reed Warbler (RW), and on the right we have the Great Reed Warbler (GRW). You might think that there’s not a lot of difference between the two, but the GRW is nearly twice the size of the RW – almost as big as a Blackbird – whereas the RW is about the size of a House Sparrow. But that won’t help if you see an individual bird with nothing alongside to compare it with, how else can you tell?
Both species are insectivores, helping us by keeping down the numbers of annoying mozzies – I have seen the GRW take prey items up to the size of the larger dragonflies. They protect themselves quite well in the reedbed cover and both species build an intricately woven nest two or three feet above the water line using four or more reed stems to anchor it.
Both species are highly vocal, and have different songs which they will be performing with great gusto over the next few months while breeding is taking place. The RW has a scratchy, buzzy song with short and fast repeated phrases, going on seemingly endlessly, and audible at quite some distance even when delivered from the depths of the reedbed. The GRW has a similar song, except it adds what heavy metal guitarists would recognise as gain, distortion, reverb and sustain – for the rest of you, it’s as though the bird has a megaphone, I mean this bird is LOUD. You absolutely can’t miss it, if you
104104
It sounds an idyllic life, hidden in the reeds with plenty of food and singing your heart out all day, but both species have a major plunderer of their nests – the European Cuckoo. The next two months will see the Cuckoos arrive, and they will be keen to track down the Warbler’s nests, a task made easier by the constant singing. Both species are highly favoured by the Cuckoo, which as we all know will mean that they end up raising just the one Cuckoo chick instead of a brood of their own. You can see more photographs of birds from our area by visiting www.marketheridge.smugmug.com See you next month.

NOW MORE THAN EVER, ONE
Monday - Friday 10:00 -13:00 & 17:00 - 20:00 Saturday 10:00 -13:00 HEALTH No grooming service during the quarantine
One Health concept is more than just vaccinating and providing antiparasitic treatments to our pets. It’s important to understand we all are living in the only available planet we have, and the way the animals (not only our pets) are living, also affects us. It’s fundamental to keep pets, livestock and wildlife hygiene and welfare. Environmental degradation produces diseases in wildlife which can mutate and become a problem for humans.
These last years, doctors, vets and other scientists are been working together in the concept “one health”. This means peoples health and animal health are highly connected: there can’t be healthy people if animals are not, and vice versa. As you can read at veterinarians professional emblem: Hygia Pecoris Salus Populi (livestock hygiene is peoples health). Their main task involves zoonotic diseases (those ones people and animals share), such as Leismaniasis and rabies. We all know that massive campaigns for vaccinating animals (mostly dogs) against rabies have saved millions of human lives. Humans and animals share not only viral diseases such as rabies and BSE (mad cows disease), but also fungal and bacterial infections (tetanus, leptospirosis), and, of course, parasitic diseases caused by worms, fleas, ticks and mosquitoes. And we know the best option for having our home free of parasites is protecting our pets.
112
A serious crisis like the one we are suffering now must be taken into account for creating a new relationship between animals, people and environment. We must keep environmental safety for keeping our own safety. During these hard times, vets are on duty for keeping One Health concept alive. It may sound banal, but if suffering 2019nCoV may be hard, just imagine how could it be suffering it together with a flea infestation. Please, let’s keep using our common sense and taking all the necessary precautions. Everybody counts for helping to get rid of this big problem. We are going to keep treating your animals as long as we can, but we recommend to book an appointment first. Only one person per animal will be allowed, and the waiting room must be kept empty. One final question: have you ever wondered how is called the vet who works with just one species? Yes, it’s the doctor!
