We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, including that from a representative from the Town Hall, as we have since May 2005.
If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine - granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.co.uk Q: GA Untidy Hi Both of you Hope your both well. Have just read the latest publication of the magazine. Saw the reply from the GA Councillor regarding not just my concern about the state of the hill. As much as I appreciate they the last few months there have been other more important concerns, this area has not been cut since last year.
appreciate that the current contract does not fully meet the needs of our growing community and are working hard to improve the situation. In response to recent requests from residents and neighbourhood associations, they have increased the frequency of the removal of waste around the shopping centre, the entrance to Gran Alacant, Avda Finlandia, Av de Noruega and Av de Polonia. They are also actively trying to resolve all of the other complaints they have received over the last few months.
I spoke to two council cleaners on Thursday and on Friday I followed the Road Sweeper up the hill so some progress. But while Santa Pola Council has seen fit to post various photos of how they are keeping GA clean the shrubs and bushes just keep growing into the road. Today two cars collided just past the park as one tried to avoid a couple of cyclists coming up the hill. Rather than make excuses Santa Pola just need to send a couple of workers out with a strimmer to cut the offending areas 2 hours work maximum Ash Update from Ash: Well Well Miracles do happen! The strimming fairies have been out and the whole hill has been cleared!!! Let’s hope they keep on to of it! Ash GA Councillor’s Reply: The Santa Pola department of cleaning, parks and gardens works closely with Urbaser to ensure that Gran Alacant has the best neighbourhood. However, they

Obviously, the extraordinary circumstances of COVID-19 has had an impact on our community and the additional sanitary requirements has meant some responses have been delayed. I ask residents to be understanding as we continue to deal with this pandemic and request that we all work together for the good of our neighbourhood. Please contact Urbaser to organise the collection of furniture and take your garden waste to the designated area on Avda Escandinavia, near the lighthouse. I want to thank the department of cleaning, parks and gardens for their willingness to help resolve these issues. Q: Medical Centre Hi Ged & Lou, Not sure what can be done but just a bit annoyed. Went to the doctors surgery on Friday morning with an ear ache and discharge, was advised no appointment until Monday when I explained what the problem was a lovely lady went off and when she came back said if I came back a 3 o’clock the doctor would see me in between patients if I was prepared to wait. I went back at 3 there was a Spanish man there shouting he didn’t understand me, and as I live in Spain should be speaking in Spanish. We have just got our residency in February, and due to Covid19 not had much chance to learn anything. I don’t think for one minute if he was in England we would not have treated him in that manner he was a nasty man and I had to go to the pharmacy for ear drops. Regards Denise Would any of our readers like to share their experiences of the medical centre?
BARRY’S BITS OF NEWS CLEANING UP Myself and many others do complain on a regular basis as to how untidy Gran Alacant is looking at times. In early July, workmen were out strimming and cutting back untidy grass areas all over the urbanisation. Getting it all ready for the surge in holiday makers. As usual at this time of the year the picture is a common problem here.
AYUNTAMIENTO SERVICES A question from Joanne Whearity Hi Barry, just the query about the switching of Ayuntamiento services to Santa Pola. Are they open for anything at all? Will services be coming back to Gran Alacant. Thanks Joanne GA Councillor’s Reply: On this subject the answer is that we are trying to resume municipal services prior to this crisis. Our intention is to definitively leave definitive administrative position in GA. Meanwhile, you can consult the website of the Town Hall where it’s explained where to go electronically for any query. GREEN LINES A question we have been asked is why the sudden surge of green lines painted on the road all the way through Los Arenales,
Either people are throwing rubbish on the road instead of in the bin, or, the bins are full and we need more of them to stop these awful scenes.

starting just as you leave Gran Alacant. As we are now only allowed 4 hours as a maximum on the beach, the green lines do tell us that we cannot park for more than 4 hours. There are not many roadside signs telling why they have been using the green paint. CAR PARK One of the smallest fit for purpose car parks on Gran Alacant is the one that serves visits to the health centre, with all of the medical services. So why oh why every year, are most of the spaces taken up with a large children’s play area , which includes a bouncy castle. Why is it even allowed for kids to mix together now when they were not allowed in school because of the covid pandemic?!!! OIL ON ROADS Again we have the problem of so much oil on the roads by the bins. Any chance of keeping it clean as it spoils the look of Gran Alacant.
BEACHES If you are a holiday maker coming to enjoy the sea and our beaches during August and September, the beaches are very well policed. Monitors are walking around making sure you are social distancing and no one is allowed to pitch up right next to the sea. You are also only allowed on the beach for no more than 4 hours, how that is policed I will never know ... Enjoy your time here on Gran Alacant ARENALES HOTEL The company involved in the building of the hotel in Los Arenales have been given one month to demolish it. Watch this space!!!!!!! POST OFFICE Gran Alacant must have the smallest post office for the given population. It is so sad to see the long queues in the searing sunshine, taking their turn to go to the one and only cashier. Are there any steps for a post office on another site? GA Councillor’s Reply: This is a problem that we have had for many years. The office expansion purely belongs to the post office. The government team already appealed in writing in February already to authorize a new location with better benefits. The answer was that the new post office is not considered essential.
NEW FARMACY We now have a second farmacia being built here on Gran Alacant. It will be next door to Consum supermarket at the commercial centre.
I want to make it clear that from the city council we are trying are best to mediate this problem which we are aware has been going on for several years now. THE DREADED VIRUS In mid July it was announced that four people in Santa Pola had the corona virus. It was stated that the incident was under control, and contained. COMPULSORY WEAR OF MASKS As from 17th of July it has become mandatory to wear the mask even if you can keep social distance, except: • Beaches and swimming pools • In natural areas • When eating and drinking in bars

International Practicioner of Holistic Medicine, fully licensed & insured TIME TO RID THE HANGOVERS!
With summer now here and you can book that sunshine break or have a well overdue catch up with your family and friends the last thing you want to put a dampener on it is the hangovers the next day.
Dehydration because it causes you to urinate a lot and then there is the sleep deprivation because it interrupts your natural sleep cycle, you don’t get the muchneeded good night’s rest.
Some of us are never affected by the dreaded things whilst others are completely ruined the next day. Fortunately, there are several things you can do to ease the discomfort.
1. Get the H2O into your system: Drinking water helps to restore the bodies necessary fluids. Alcohol concentrates the blood, which is 70% water, so it really affects the fluid balance. Drinking the necessary water helps the bloodstream and circulatory system carry the much-needed nutrients to your body. The worst thing you can do is go for that “hair of the dog” more booze. It will only make you feel temporarily better because of that euphoric feeling from the night before, so you forget about
The 3 big problems with having too much the night before are inflammation, dehydration and sleep deprivation. Inflammation is caused because the alcohol binds to different chemical enzymes in the body and changes the way we act.

the hangover temporarily, but you will feel even worse soon after. Can’t do too much water then reach for the energy drinks. 2. Drinking sports drinks: will rehydrate the body even faster. These drinks are loaded with some minerals called electrolytes - such as magnesium, calcium, sodium and potassium - which help regulate fluid levels in the body. They elevate blood glucose and sodium levels leading to a faster rehydration. So, before you go out get some energy drinks at the ready in the fridge. 3. Exercising: is also a very good fast and effective hangover and experts say that exercise works the best as it increases the oxygen flow to the brain and fills you with the great feel good hormones that boost your energy. I do understand if you feel you can’t think about that whilst feeling the need to throw up, but maybe once the energy drink or water has kicked in you could possibly muster the strength for a
low to moderate workout. 4. Get the carbs into you: Alcohol interferes with your blood sugar levels which can be the reason you feel so tired, irritable and all in all like a lead weight. Having some toast or pancakes, something carb packed can help elevate the blood sugars and get you some much needed energy. 5. Try not to mix your drinks too much: Whilst it is great to have the cocktails, if you decide on the cocktails make sure you choose the ones with the same alcohol ingredients, this will aid the cause and allow you not to suffer too much the next day. Its always great to enjoy our summer but remember the weather alone dehydrates us (and that’s just drying our hair before we even get out the door) so have a good amount of water in your system before your evening begins. Have a very happy August. Eat, drink, be merry and stay hydrated.

Dear Gran Alacant Advertiser, “I am a Year 12 student at the Lycée Français of Alicante, and I am part of the Students For Sustainable Fashion club. Our goal is to raise awareness about the impacts of the fast fashion industry, and raise money for charities surrounding it. I was wondering if there was any possibility of writing an article or Letter to The Editor in an upcoming paper. It would be about the changes that readers can make in their lifestyle as consumers to better the environment and international human rights”.
FAST FASHION Fast Fashion is the rapid production cycle of inexpensive clothing, at a very high cost. It is the second most polluting industry globally, following the oil industry. Since transportation and textiles aren't cheap, the savings and profit come out of the labour.
Inhumane working conditions, belowpoverty wages, and child labour are just some of the horrid conditions these producers face. In addition to manufacturing, there is also textile production. A single cotton T-shirt consumes over 10220 litres of water (which would be the equivalent of 70 showers). Children overseas are still being exploited to pick cotton; they are breathing in toxic fertilizers that are used to cheaply increase the production rate. Toxins from fertilizers and the dying process induce illness, birth defects, and premature death Remnants of these chemicals are often still present after the products are transported into stores. There's a reason most dirt-cheap garments reek; washing out chemicals costs money, and maximum profit is key to business. Due to the misogynistic, outdated culture of developing countries, women are often
sexually harassed by their employers and co-workers because their government doesn't enforce workplace rights. Maternity leave is seldom, and most children are either miscarried because of the mother's exhaustion or born with horrific birth defects invoked by the toxicity. How can you, the reader of this article, help? Every time you purchase an item you are voting; you're funding the brand and telling them that you want more similar items. You are supporting their unethical practices, in response, they will grow and continue. Buying local, thrifted, used, consigned, second hand and ethical clothing not only is great for the environment and reduces inhumane labour. But also many of these sustainable companies donate their profits to organizations that support the concept of "slow fashion", contrary to the practices initially described. Many clothes at thrift stores or secondhand stores are initially manufactured by fast fashion, but buying second hand isn't supporting the brand, and is recycling old clothing, it is giving the piece of clothing a new life. Many people respond to this issue with, "well you can't save the world" or "one purchase won't make a difference." No, I cannot save the world; just like a single cent isn't worth anything. However, a cent invested in a successful stock can sprout into a million of euros; just as my idea of treating other humans with respect is being shared with all of you readers, and if you tell your friends and change your habits, soon unethical corporations will go out of business or change their ways. Sofía Entrialgo Main, 15

Q
: Are we learning to be alone? To listen more instead of just hearing?
A
: It's funny, but we have never given as much importance to our thoughts as we do now. Every day we listen to everyone, their requests, their problems, their demands, their concerns, but we don't listen to ourselves. Now we need to stop hearing and start listening, so we can focus on ourselves instead of others and redirect our priorities towards us. It's good and positive to help and listen to others, but we must not give everything to them. Our heart also needs to receive the same affection that we provide. Now is the time to look inside and, establish dialogues with ourselves. It´s time to see our strengths and weaknesses and put them in their true place. Others make us feel good or bad because of the power we assign to them, so it would be a positive start to recover that power and start thinking that we are important too. Suddenly we've had to learn to be alone and we've realized that having to be
54
alone has nothing to do with "being alone". In addition we've had to deal with thoughts that are sometimes irrational. In the past we've avoided loneliness at any cost. We have used our free time for work and given importance to social approval, smiling on the outside when we are stressed on the inside, until eventually everything suddenly falls apart. We looked the other way when we were with a person who made us feel alone, as we thought it was worse to admit to the loneliness. We created emotional dependencies that we satisfied with a few crumbs, until everything changed. Now we must listen to our thoughts and take advantage of the fact that life has stopped in its tracks. We need to synchronize our compass and not let chance govern our destiny. Q: Do we need batteries to start? : Too many times we say "I'm out of batteries" instead of "I don't want to do something." We blame energy when we lack discipline and / or motivation, leaving (as in our student days) everything to the last moment.
A
But that's not the worst thing, when it comes to performing a task we spend our lives with a mantra based on the "I have to do....", "tomorrow I´ll do it...", etc, When tomorrow passes, we still don't do it, nor the next day, it becomes a never ending cycle. We need to realize that when we don't
make a decision, we have already made it. Deciding not to do something is a choice we've already made. On many occasions it's fear, on others it´s perfectionism that makes us question the answer over and over again without making any decisions.
something and block out the rest. We hope that life smiles at us, without working for it. As the song says, there are three ingredients in life, but we forgot that the recipe was written by us.
We need to understand that it is better to make mistakes instead of spending our lives regretting not having made a decision.
If this crisis is teaching us something, it's to live in the present. Thinking about tomorrow is fine, as long as we focus our action on the "here and now."
Q: Where are you in your life now? : It's curious, but one of the most complicated questions we can answer is: where are you in your life now?
A
It's very difficult for us to respond with any precision, because our life is full of many things that are often unbalanced. Love, health and work, are big areas of our lives and each one works at its own pace. This often means that we compensate for each other and think that we cannot have everything. Life passes and things change. Sometimes we have to reach the conclusion that it is not life but us who put our interest in
As somebody used to say, “building castles in the air you also need to have your feet firmly anchored to the ground, because dreams without a present are nothing but soap bubbles”. We've realized that our projects, our illusions, can fail so we should concentrate all our interest in living today without neglecting tomorrow in any way. Life is funny… when we thought we had it the safest, it kicked us in the behind and locked us in our houses. Let's learn the lesson and don't leave for tomorrow what we can live today.

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? TRUST US
by Mark Etheridge
NIGHT HERON brown with large white spots on the wings and blurry streaks on the underparts. They often nest in groups deep in the reedbeds that include other species such as herons, egrets, and ibises, and this can occasionally lead to some confusion on the part of the Night Herons - they will brood any chick that is placed in its nest, being unable to distinguish between their own offspring and nestlings from other parents. Young Night-Herons leave the nest at the age of 1 month but cannot fly until they are 6 weeks old. They move through the vegetation on foot, joining up in foraging flocks at night.
Last month I told you about the breeding success of the Great Crested Grebe, a bird not usually found in the Clot, but due to the improvements in the water system, it has made a successful appearance. It would now seem that yet another bird has found the area much to its liking. The Night Heron (or Black-crowned Night Heron to give it its full name) used to be an occasional visitor to the Clot; I usually had four or five sightings each year, but in July this year my good birding friends Bryan Thomas and John Edwards had views of two adult and four juvenile Night Herons from the new hide in the Clot, which more or less confirms that breeding has taken place this year. Night-Herons are small herons with rather squat, thick proportions. They have thick necks, large, flat heads, and heavy, pointed bills. The legs are short and, in flight, barely reach the end of the tail. So why the name Night Heron? They prefer to hunt at dawn, dusk and during the night; it is thought this behaviour has evolved to lessen the competition between themselves and other heron species. They are opportunistic feeders, often standing motionless by the water waiting for prey to come within reach, but they have also been observed to engage in bait fishing; luring or distracting fish by tossing edible or inedible buoyant objects into water within their striking range – a rare example of tool use among birds. Night Herons are among the most widespread of the world’s birds, being found on every continent apart from Antarctica (they get quite close, with colonies to be found on the Falkland Islands) but in Britain they are fairly scarce – usually a few records each year, with breeding only confirmed in 2010 and again in 2017. Global warming may induce these birds to become more regular in the UK, but for now you can enjoy seeing them right here in the Clot! HARMLESS TOYS FOR DOGS During the summer we spend more time outdoors playing with our dogs, and some problems may appear for this reason. It’s very common owners toss stones, balls or sticks and the dog chases and picks them up in the mouth. Most dogs enjoy this game, but it may cause problems in the following cases: If the dog has trouble with its joints, running and jumping when chasing a toy may damage them. This is typical in old or overweight dogs. A sudden turn when running, or a big jump, may produce a broken cruciate ligament, so, in this kind of dogs, we recommend not to toss the ball or stick, but to roll it on the floor, in order to make the game a bit calmer. The animal can keep on playing but we are avoiding violent running or jumping. Our dog loves catching objects in air (a Frisbee, for example), in a very energetic way. In this case, we can have 2 different problems: if the object is small, the dog may swallow it. This is a more common condition than it might appear, and the game may end up in a Vet practice. The other case would be when the object is big, hard or heavy, jaw joint suffers. A mouth which carries a 300gr toy or stone during a walk, or a mouth that opens too much for catching a big toy, sooner or later it will have problems. It’s not a very serious condition, but it’s very painful, and this pain may make impossible for the dog to chew, yawn, and even bark.

What should I do for playing with my dog in a safe way? We propose in this article a lightweight, crunchy (that noise that most dogs love), and very cheap. It consists on a plastic bottle (mineral water) that we will crush a little bit, and then we put the plug. When the dog carries the bottle in its mouth, the bottle crunches. In order to protect the dog’s mouth and teeth from the plastic, we’ll put the bottle into a strong tissue bag. The ideal tissue would be denim. We have to cut a rectangle of tissue big enough to cover completely the bottle, and then we sew the tissue creating a tube. Now we sew the back end of the tube, and finally we close the front part with a Velcro, which will allow us to renew the bottle when it’s broken. Depending on the size of the dog we can use a 1 litre bottle or a 300 cl one. The result will be an extremely light toy which will crunch when bitten. Very easy to do and cheap. Enjoy it!
