Gran Alacant Advertiser continues to bring you all the local NEWS including information from the local Town Hall representative. Working for the local community since May 2005. If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please email on granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.com Q: Builder Rubbish Hola. Could you please advise our local councillor that there has been a build-up of builder’s rubbish and cardboard at the bins at Carabassi outside Mediterraneo 3. It does not help that people don’t flatten their cardboard waste. Thanks, Kieran Update: 1/7 The rubbish was cleared yesterday. We don't seem to have the vehicle that used to collect on a Tuesday and Thursday anymore. Looking at the amount of rubbish piled up near the bins in this area I don't know if the councillor goes around to check or who ever is in charge of it. Once again thank you for your help.

Oscar Valenzuela’s reply: Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I will speak to the councillor for road safety to install the new sign as soon as possible. Q: The Petanca Courts in front of the Medical Centre These courts are in a shocking state. In previous summers children used to play and dig them up. Also when the chiringuito was open they used to put their table and chairs on them.

Q: Pedestrian Crossing Hello Lou and Ged, Could you include a plea to the Ayuntamiento in the August edition, to put a new pedestrian crossing sign outside the restaurant Asiático on Avda. Finlandia? The original sign was demolished a long time ago and my previous request, last year, did not get any response. The first photo shows where the sign was fitted in the ground. Kind Regards, Terry

Please can you ask Oscar if they can be "made good". For example rotavated and compacted so that children can't dig there plus they will be flatter. Also would it be possible please to prevent the chringuito usage. The above would be most appreciated and may I thank you in advance for your co-operation. Kind Regards, A Petanca Player

Oscar Valenzuela’s reply: Thank you for your question. We are currently discussing the improvement of these facilities and we will talk with the operators of the chiringuito.

were crawling up the house walls. He was then manically sweeping them out of the garden/patio. Neighbours were also sweeping them out of their gardens and pavements.

Q: Pest Control Hi Lou & Ged, We only moved here in December and have found your magazine very helpful. Last night we were sat on our patio eating dinner and we saw two men lift the two manhole covers on the road next to our houses. They sprayed down the drains and closed the small flap on the manhole and put some tape over the top of the flap.

We completely understand that pest control needs to be done and are very grateful for that, but it would have been nice to have been notified beforehand. It would also be helpful if the workers ensure the flap is closed and sealed properly.

After they’d left we had lots of cockroaches coming over our garden wall and under our gate. When we looked the tape on the manhole had lifted and the cockroaches were getting out through it. We had a carpet of cockroaches on the road, the pavements and our patio. The neighbours also had them in their gardens.

Kind regards Lynne

We had to take our food inside and our dog. Darren, my husband had to run round closing the windows and doors as they

I would be grateful if you could let the relevant authorities know to make things better going forward.

Oscar Valenzuela’s reply: We will speak to the pest control company since I understand this is a specific problem. We have a plan to coordinate with all communities in neighbourhood association together with the pest control company to carry out simultaneous actions and minimize the impact.

This would help to make the service more efficient and keep our Gran Alacant nice and tidy. LATEST NEWS FROM THE GA COUNCILLOR OSCAR VALENZUELA 6th and 8th July The department of cleaning, parks and gardens have continued with various pruning and clearing actions in the neighborhood. They also continue to clean and collect household belongings that are left around the bin areas. The new cleaning contract is

being pushed through as for a long time the current service level is insufficient, especially during the Summer months when there is a large influx of people in the area. 13th July I support the great work that the police have been doing in the neighbourhood throughout July that have resulted in several sanctions. I ask all residents to be mindful of others and adhering to the rules in relation to the disposal of household goods, the control

of pets and their excrement and disposal of garden waste. If you witness behaviour to the contrary, then please report it to the police. POLICE NOTICE - 13TH JULY Your Local Police are committed to #cleaning, #hygiene and #habitability of Santa Pola: We proceed with different operations (including vehicles) 24 hours a day, denouncing uncivil behaviors that litter our neighbourhoods: • • •

Complaints for throwing organic waste (pruning) or debris outside the authorized places Complaints for dirtying the roads with dog defecations Complaints for leaving belongings on public roads, unless the collection service has been requested

We ask neighbours and visitors #respect and #civism so that Santa Pola continues to be a wonderful place to live and come for #vacations

And remember, if you see something, tell us T: 965411103 or 112 14th July Finally, the problem of lack of lighting on Cyprus Street, which mainly affected the residents of the community of Creta 74, has been solved.

The previous corporation left the ownership of the lighting unchanged at the beginning of 2019 and that, together with a direct hitch that nobody knows who has made, left us with a very difficult situation to manage with Iberdrola and it was very difficult to justify in intervention who would assume the debt so that supply could be restored.

8

Together with the infrastructure department and the neighbourhood association, we have been able to persuade Iberdrola to restore the service through the agreement of an urgent government board to assume the debt, which we previously had to fight in intervention to unravel the entire administrative mess . I understand that the residents feel that the time it has taken to resolve the situation may seem slow, but when public money needs to be used to pay the debt, it must be justified, and in this case the error made by the previous corporation together with the direct down payment of unknown origin generated a difficult situation that was hard to resolve quickly. 21st July On Saturday the 21st of August, Santa Pola will host an event that is of great importance and has international recognition. The 8th stage of the Cycling Tour of Spain will depart from Av. Santiago Bernabeu at 1300.

16th July After the announcement that the hours of the Gran Alacant Medical Centre were to be reduced in July and August we have worked with the Department of Health and the Hospital of Elche, on which we depend as a municipality, to address the problem of short hours in Gran Alacant and we are pleased to announce the we have managed to solve it. From the 20th July, the Gran Alacant Medical Centre will open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. which is the same as last Summer and has been achieved with the hiring of a new doctor. I want to thank the Elche Hospital medical and nursing management, as well as its coordinator, for their willingness to provide the best possible service with the limited human resources available. However, we continue in talks with the Generalitat so that it can put together a plan so that this situation is not repeated. We think that the hiring model is not working during the Summer season. It is in the Summer months that tourist areas like ours see their population increase and this is when additional cover needs to be automatically provided. It is not fair that we have to fight for it every Summer.

If you would like to supply news or info for our next edition, or have a question for Gran Alacant Councillor Oscar Pedro Valenzuela, please email: info@granalacantadvertiser.com

ENJOY YOUR SUMMER IN GRAN ALACANT

Well things are definitely on the up here in Gran Alacant! Whilst not as busy as it would normally be, there are now plenty of tourists arriving and Gran Alacant is buzzing! A fantastic new bar, The London Tavern, has opened upstairs in the Gran Alacant Commercial Centre, run by the Silent Disco team and managed by the lovely Roger. We wish them the best of luck with their new venture. And a very stylish cocktail bar, called Atipico has also opened on Avenida Escandanavia where the lovely Fusion restaurant used to be – the very best of luck to them too. In addition, a new launderette has opened in the Gran Alacant Commercial Centre – a very welcome addition to the area. Plus it’s great to see all the bars and restaurants getting busy again and our very own and very much loved Gran Alacant Tourist Train has started up again earlier this month. Late last month, our Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, announced that facemasks would no longer be mandatory outdoors, providing a 1.5m distance could be maintained and, from 2nd July, there would be changes to entry requirements to Spain due to Covid whereby all visitors (over the age of 12) must supply wither a PCR/Antigen test or a certification of double vaccination on arrival. You also need to complete a

10

Health Control Form to present on arrival at Alicante Airport. Travel Insurance against Covid is also available through companies such as www.staysure.co.uk. For your return you will need PCR/Antigen tests which are available at: Clinica Gran Alacant - Family Doctors (MASA Square) Calle Holanda 9, bajo 8, Gran Alacant Open: Monday - Friday: 09.30 - 13.30 0034 865 789 554 PCR test: 98€ results in 24 - 48 hours Antigen test: 45€ results in 20 minutes Prices correct as of 23.07.21. Prices may change and should be used as guidance only. Please note you must phone to book an appointment in good time for your flight home (they speak English). Whilst the numbers testing positive here for Covid have increased, Gran Alacant is still very safe and the Health Centres are continuing with the vaccine rollout here in the Valencian Community and, at the time of writing, over 25 million people in Spain are now fully vaccinated. So let’s all get on with enjoying the summer here in Gran Alacant and on our gorgeous Carabassi beach!

BOOK CLUB GRAN ALACANT TRUST US Book of the month by Beth Looking for a relaxing read for the beach or sitting by the pool - then this is for you! My Recommended Book of the Month The Hunting Party Lucy Foley

Beth worked as a Qualified Librarian in Aberdeen for 20 years. She loves reading and delights in finding exciting new authors as well as reverting back to favourite writers of all genres. Beth has lived in Gran Alacant for the last 15 years.

For 10 years a group of friends from Oxford have met to welcome in the New Year. For this holiday they have chosen an isolated Scottish estate. But things go wrong ... secret resentment unfolds just as a blizzard seals the lodge from the outside world. 2 days later one of them is dead and who is the killer?! An interesting mystery with brilliant characterisation.

DAMON ROSE MEETING WITH GA BOOKCLUB

Great turnout at the Book Club when published author Damon Rose attended to talk about his book "The Handover Murders". Damon signed copies of his book and didn't give too much of the plot away as he will return in September when Book Club members have had an opportunity to read it.

NEXT BOOK CLUB MEETING

Wednesday 25 August 2pm, Skipper Bar MASA Square We meet up once a month, discuss the books we are reading now and suggest new ones. Anyone interested in joining us or looking for more information please contact Beth on Whatsapp +44 7853 363060

Home Turf Staycation | Golfo de Mazarrón International travel is not really an option at the moment and local hospitality needs our support so we decided to keep it local and enjoy a summer staycation. After months exploring our lovely province and keeping in mind that July and August would be busy around Gran Alacant we took a short break on the coast of Murcia. Driving for a little over an hour and just across the southern border of the Valencian Community we discovered a quieter Spain away from the hustle and bustle of our own province: The Costa Cálida. As you drive south the land soon becomes increasingly arid and mountainous with fewer towns and development. The coast takes the form of a series of headlands, bays and coves with beautiful sandy beaches leading to clear waters.

We stayed in the largest of the coastal towns, Puerto de Mazarrón. This port is located on the Golfo de Mazarrón. Originally a small fishing port, it is now a relaxed holiday resort mostly patronised by Spaniards. Stretching away along the coast of the Golfo de Mazarrón are a number of smaller settlements clustered around stretches of beach including La Azohía, Isla Plana and Bolnuevo.

60

Our first full day was spent exploring the northern end of the Golfo and the spectacular naval gun emplacements called Castillitos (“Little Castles”) at Cabo Tiñoso (Cartagena). These emplacements were constructed in the early 1930s to protect the approaches to the naval port of Cartagena. The complex of guns and supporting buildings is now an entry free museum and one is able to explore the complex (and yes, most visitors do live out their Cher fantasies…!) and enjoy the breathtaking views across the entire stretch of sea towards Cartagena. Merchant ships still anchor below the headland awaiting their turn to enter the port. The scale of the emplacements is striking however one wonders how useful they would have been under air attack since big gun batteries and battleships were already becoming obsolete at the time these were being built.

Afterwards we spent the rest of the day on the beach at La Azohía. The beach here is long and sandy but quiet and the settlement cannot even be described as a town being more of a collection of summer houses and a few restaurants. It reminded us of the atmosphere one enjoys in the Cycladic islands in Greece; just beautiful! We spent our time at a perfect chiringuito called Namaste, run by a very friendly lady

HOME TURF CARABASSI CENTRE

called Begoña. She provides loungers, parasols, excellent home cooked healthy beach food and chilled claras and tintos de verano - highly recommended for a relaxing day on the beach. The next day we travelled south from Puerto de Mazarrón to the town of Bolnuevo and the protected cove beaches that stretch south along the coast. Bolnuevo is a great family resort with a sprinkling of beach and restaurants, there is one called Oasis which has a great vibe and offers accommodation. However, it was the small cove beaches that we wished to explore and we were not disappointed. The old coast road has been closed and turned into a walking path of 8km which allows you to explore the coast at your own pace. It was too hot to walk the entire coastal path so we chose a small cove hemed by tall cliffs and after scrambling down from the path were rewarded by a wonderful place to swim in crystal waters shared with only a handful of other bathers. The timeless magic of the Meditaranean came alive in that little cove. Once the weather cools down, we will definitely come back to fully experience that part of the Murcian coast.

Dinner was back at Puerto de Mazarron and taken at a gastro tapas restaurant on the paseo, Tapería Perra Chica. We enjoyed classic tapas dishes with a twist of imagination to challenge one’s expectations of what it is possible to find in a town off of the beaten track. After dinner we decided to walk up the hill toward the Faro (lighthouse) of Mazarrón and came across the perfect sunset place, Heladería El Faro, where you can enjoy a cocktail or two as well as the stunning views over the bay and the surrounding mountains.

The final day we drove home, stopping in Cartagena for lunch. This ancient city contains a little maze of shady historic streets with places to shop and eat. It is one of the most historic and important Spanish ports and famous for its roman ruins. We will definitely be returning for a city break & proper visit in future. Our “staycation” expedition to the Murcia coast was a huge success. If you want to enjoy a quieter coastal Spain with sunshine, great beaches and good food we highly recommend that you visit our southern neighbours in the Golfo de Mazarrón area. AVENIDA ESCANDINAVIA Fund raising for “Helping Hands” Charity However, there was another purpose for the event. The night was held by Dunbar’s to help raise funds and awareness for the charity “A Helping Hand”.

What a great night was had by all. It is safe to say, one way or another, we have all endured months of restrictions and hardship with the dreaded pandemic. Thankfully, slowly but surely the majority of us are beginning to feel that good times are coming back. We have a new outlook on life and are starting to share special moments with friends that we may never have done before. That was certainly true of the Ladies White Night at Dunbar’s back in June. The night was full of fun, laughter, games, great food and entertainment provided by the fantastic Ben Valentiene.

A few months ago Mandy and Steph came across the same post on Facebook. The post explained how many families across the Costa Blanca were severely affected by the pandemic. The article was written by Ines Perkins, a nurse working in Torrevieja, who was witnessing first-hand the devastating effect the pandemic was having on families. Many families were undergoing financial hardship and were unable to feed themselves, a sorry tale in 2021. Both Mandy and Steph were completely moved by the post and felt compelled to do something about it. Since April, they have been raising awareness for the charity and asking for donations including non-perishable food, hygiene products (both household and personal) baby supplies eg nappies, formula, wipes etc.

“The generosity of the customers and people of Gran Alacant has been overwhelming to say the least,” said Mandy. “We have a giving table at the bar where customers leave their donations after 12noon each Reaching out to help families in need across day. It is running like clockwork and the Costa Blanca, due to the panademic. it’s great that everyone has pulled If you would like to help or together to make a difference to donate please contact: these poor families”.

€170 was raised on the night and everyone is hoping that we can continue to help with more donations and more events in the future.

Out & About ...

in Gran Alacant GALs Gran Alacant Ladies The group was originally 4 friends - members of a Spanish Facebook group who discovered they all lived/ stayed in Gran Alacant. The 4 met for coffee and GALs was born!! Almost 2 years later the group now has 171 members - ladies who all have a connection to Gran Alacant and are looking for friendship, support, information, a few laughs and the occasional shoulder to cry on.

Julie Lewis says “as a female new to Gran Alacant, I was keen to meet up with others who have similar interests and experience and knowledge of the area - the group has snowballed from there. I have had great feedback from people who have met new friends through our monthly socials or simply had a question answered on the page. We meet at different venues around Gran Alacant for our monthly get togethers to try and support businesses locally. WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? TRUST US

by Mark Etheridge

COLLARED PRATINCOLE

Are you a birdwatching beginner? Lesson #1 in the identification of birds – if it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck and swims like a duck, it is probably a duck. You can apply this principle to a greater or lesser degree to anything you see, improving your technique as you go along, until you end up at a point where you can say that if it looks like something, sounds like something and flies like something, then that is probably exactly what it is. However, as in all things, there are exceptions to the rule. If you see a bird that is the shape of a tern, flies like a swallow and feeds on arable fields like a plover, you might be a bit stumped. It’s almost as if this bird is deliberately setting out to confuse you, or some dastardly Dr Frankenstein has built a bird out of the spare bits left over when all the others were finished. This is a Collared Pratincole (the name comes from the Latin pratum ‘meadow’ + incola ‘inhabitant’) which more or less tells you where you might find one, although they tend to favour damper fields and marshes. It is actually a member of the wader family, which includes such things as Sandpipers, Snipe and Lapwings, but the problem is it doesn’t really resemble any of these.

90 90

It looks a bit like a Tern, with an elongated shape and short legs when on the ground, flies like a Swallow, with agile flight incorporating swoops and turns to catch the aerial insects on which it feeds, and nests in an inconspicuous scrape in bare ground like a Plover. The overall sandy colouration of this bird means that it blends in well with the soil, so they’re well protected from predators – like many other plovers and waders it will use the “broken wing” technique to lure you away from its nesting site if you get too close, so that you will follow it instead of finding the vulnerable eggs and chicks. It’s a summer visitor to our area; the best local places to find it are at the El Hondo reserve or the smaller coastal El Pinet reserve near La Marina, where they breed on the man-made islands in the lagoons, along with the Terns which dominate the islands. It is not unknown in the UK, but again is one of those birds which attract scores of British birders whenever they turn up. The Spanish name is Canastera Común, which means Common Basket Maker – why, I have no idea! The adults tend to migrate south earlier than the youngsters, and you can sometimes find the juveniles (which are a more scaly-brown colour than the bird in my picture) in late summer perched disconsolately on the centre of the rural roundabout as you come off the N332 south to go to La Marina. You can see more photographs of birds from our area by visiting www.marketheridge.smugmug.com See you next month.

Monday - Friday 10:00 -13:00 & 17:00 - 20:00 Saturday 10:00 -13:00

Tel: 966 698 569 MACROFARMS:

What are they and why they need to end! When Temple Grandin, a brilliant zoologist who specializes in farm animals, visited a macro farm, she wrote in her diary “If hell exists, I’m in it”. Grandin had a remarkable sensitivity towards farm animals and vowed to make their living conditions decent. For this, she visited different farms across the country, witnessing hellish enclosures that had no regard for the animal’s health or wellbeing after all, why did those animals need any comfort if they were born to die? In Spain, the case of Caparroso’s macro farm came to light because the animal’s faeces were polluting the nearby river to alarming levels. Greenpeace Spain made a protest video not only for the environmental damage the faeces were causing, but also to enlighten the general public about what macro farms are. Macro farms are big industrial warehouses where animals are kept in cages just a little bit bigger than them and fed artificially made food. There is almost no separation between cages, and don’t allow them to leave unless it’s for breeding or to be sent to the slaughterhouse. Their purpose is to produce as much and as cheap as possible, for that they keep the livestock in inhumane conditions and abuse them to breed and produce endlessly. Not only do they abuse cattle, but also dogs as there are also dog macro farms. This type of livestock farming can not be allowed to continue, for the abuse it inflicts on cattle, the damage it does to the environment and the threat it poses to local traditional farmers with its low prices. Every single animal deserves a proper enclosure to live, food that actually nourishes, their basic hygiene needs and the opportunity to interact freely with others. And of course, if

98

Liliana Aldeguer Cerdán 793 English translation by Sergio Reina Esteban col 747

Grooming Service Available they are going to be used for meat or the likes, they deserve a quick, dignified and painless death. Even if they are meant to be food or clothing, livestock still is sentient beings with the ability to feel not only pain but also fear and anguish if they are kept in claustrophobic cages. What can we, as ordinary people, do? We can refuse to consume meat products that come from macro farms or non-ethical companies. By Googling “ASPCA brand list” and clicking the “Shop with your heart brand list” we have access to a list of brands that have earned a welfare certification that makes sure animals didn’t suffer for you to have their products. This list is divided into categories not only meat-related but every animal-related product, such as eggs and yoghurt. We can also hold accountable the companies responsible if they have macro farms and/or force their livestock to live in unacceptable conditions. Try and make an effort to buy fewer products from them and shop at your local butcher. People have a choice not to partake in other living beings’ suffering, and a duty to make sure this kind of livestock farming is prohibited and replaced with a much more ethical one that allows animals to live their lives happily. I’d like to end this grim topic on a lighter note, by remarking on Grandin’s work, which has given the “Grandin welfare certification” for ethical farms and another of her quotes “I think using animals for food is an ethical thing to do, but we've got to do it right (...) We owe the animal respect.” Special thanks to our elder daughter Marina for her help with this month’s article.

PETS IN SPAIN www.petsinspain.com

Pets In Spain is a website dedicated to the re-homing of abandoned and unwanted animals on the Costa Blanca. Pepper, Spice and Chilli have all been adopted from our last issue Five weeks ago this 4 week old kitten was spotted in the gutter beside the main N332 road. Exactly how she got there is not known, she was injured, unable to put any weight on her back left leg and her left eye was closed and swollen. It was a miracle that she was still alive. She was placed into a foster home but needed regular visits to the vet clinic for treatment including manual administration just to empty her bladder. A week later we where so relieved when she started using the injured leg and to pass urine without manual manipulation by a vet. A few days later, despite treatment to her eye, it worsened and bulged out and she was rushed during the night to the emergency animal hospital in Guardamar. A scan revealed that she had a large abscess undoubtably caused by the physical trauma shortly before she was rescued. Unfortunately after 5 days in the animal hospital on intravenous drips the decision was made to remove the eye. Now back in her foster home she is running round playing with anything that moves. We have named her Button and for some lucky person she will make the most wonderful pet companion. If you would like to meet Button please call or message in Whatsapp to: 645469253 Email: info@petsinspain.com

GRAN ALACANT WALKING FOOTBALL

At the beginning of July, we had our Tuesday Indoor Sessions altered to Wednesdays at the later time of 11.00 – 12.00 for the summer school holiday period. Considering the heat the turnout has been good, enabling an entertaining session each week. We had one family day which was great fun, men had to walk, ladies could run and only the children were allowed to score a goal. Some old friends are beginning to arrive back with the continued rollout of vaccinations. On the social side, as the La Liga season approaches, the first home fixture for Elche is on Monday 16th August versus Athletic Club Bilbao at 22.00. At the time of going to press, the ticket prices are being released.
