AUGUST 2022 ISSUE 211
Gran Alacant Advertiser continues to bring you all the local NEWS including information from the local Town Hall representative. Working for the local community since May 2005. If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please email on info@granalacantadvertiser.com Q: Maintanance Dear Lou & Ged, I want to come back on the issue of the flora in the Calle Antonia Garcia Andreu ...pavements have been “cleaned” but the trees are still a disaster.
There are a few crazy drivers in the neighbourhood who put their foot down when they reach the park and drive with unbelievable speed past my house. Three cats have been killed and we are waiting for the death of a young child. The outside gate has a distance of 70cm to that ‘racecourse’! Is there anything that can be done about this situation? Kind Regards, Ria GA Advertiser Reply: Thank you for getting in touch Ria. I have forwarded your concerns to the local councillor to ensure he is aware of this problem. We hope that a solution to this problem can be found before any further accidents are caused.
As a pedestrian you can not even walk, drivers have to move on the street ... so a very dangerous situation. And the diseases on the tress gave gone worse ... so can the Council Hall pls be asked to urge cutting them properly and treating them? This also to avoid that this plant disease harm our own plants. Best regards, Nancy Q: Speeding on Calle Belgica Dear Lou and Ged This is the 7th time I have requested speed bumps in the latter part of Calle Belgica. I have asked the owners community numerous times to do something about it, but nothing has been done. It is a public street belonging to Santa Pola.
Q: Post Office Hi Lou and Ged I, along with a few other people, were wondering what happened about the shelter that was needed as cover from the sun/rain whilst queueing to go into the Post Office? We saw work going on behind the Post Office, which looks like a pathway and a small building which could be the toilet. It has been cordoned off for ages. Therefore, we wondered if there was any more news especially as the weather is hotter than ever. Kind Regards, Jan Thank you for your email Jan. Please see the local councillor’s update on the Post Office Service. It is hoped that with the improvements to the service, including longer opening hours, that long queues of people waiting will be a thing of the past. Furthermore, with the new pathway to the rear of the building, some shelter will be provided by the trees.
LARGE ITEMS COLLECTIONS
Tuesdays and Thursdays ONLY. Please Whatsapp only this number any day of the week to let them know the name of the street you are leaving your large items on. This would help to make the service more efficient and keep our Gran Alacant nice and tidy. LATEST NEWS FROM THE GA COUNCILLOR OSCAR VALENZUELA
NEW SCHOOL The Santa Pola City Council has demanded that the Generalitat Valenciana immediately puts out to tender for the building of the second school in Gran Alacant. This is after over 3 years of waiting and delays.
The Councillor for Education, Trini Ortiz describes the continued delays in the bidding process for the building of the second school in Gran Alacant as “Testing. The school should be finished and up and running by now. In June, with the visit of the General Director of Infrastructures, we were advised that the tender was imminent. Later in December, they told us that they were recalculating the costs. Now we have been told that we must request an appointment to speak with the Ministry of Education. We have been asking and calling every week and they are not able to specify dates or give us information. From the City Council of Santa Pola we demand that the work be put out to public tender, after more than 3 years of unfulfilled promises”.
Councillor of Gran Alacant, Óscar Valenzuela, said "Parents are very angry with the situation and it is totally understandable because the promises made by the Generalitat Valenciana are not being fulfilled. The children continue to attend Colegio Vicenta Ruso where there is no capacity for all of them”. The 2nd school will be located beside the Monte Faro urbanization and the construction works of the new center will last approximately 18 months. The City Council have to assume responsibility for the roads and the urbanization of the area, once the school has been built. The school is expected to have 2 classrooms for 2 year olds, 9 classrooms for infants and 18 for primary. Among the services, there will be a dining room, library and gym, as well as classrooms for learning support and for practical subjects such as music or computing. HEALTH CENTRE
The City Council continues to work towards the construction of a new health center in Gran Alacant to address the needs of a very large center of population that, to date, has
had to travel out with the area for medical attention. The office currently has 3 administrative assistants, 5 nurses, 1 matron, 5 doctors, 2 paediatricians and 2 TCAEs. The additional staff are 1 administrative, 3 nurses, 1 matron, 1 doctor and 1 TCAE. It has been estimated that the extension of the health centre will cost around 800k euros with 400k being spent in 2022 and the other 400k to be spent in 2023. The Mayoress Loreto Serrano said, "The extension of the Gran Alacant Health Center is fundamental, necessary and urgent. It is very important that the residents of the area can access all the services of the health center. This expansion will provide the much needed medical requirements and facilities”. "We were working with the Generalitat to access a subsidy of 400,000 euros, but if the figure is higher, as it seems, we are going to ask the Valencian Government for more funding or even be able to carry out the expansion in 2 phases." POST OFFICE The City Council has asked Correos to extend the schedule in Gran Alacant and improve distribution services.
The Mayoress of Santa Pola, Loreto Serrano, and the Councilor of Gran Alacant, Oscar Valenzuela, held a meeting this week with representatives for Correos, the heads of the distribution sector in Alicante, and the administrators from Gran Alacant. The City Council asked Correos to implement measures to improve their distribution of mail. The extension of opening hours of the Gran Alacant Post Office was also discussed particularly increasing opening hours to some afternoons and Saturday mornings.
The extension works have been carried out to the Gran Alacant Post Office. This includes a new counter, toilet and access ramp in addition to the relocation of the access path to the rear of the building using the external trees to provide shade. DRAINAGE Improvements to the drainage network is underway.
The improvement works include replacing the current 315mm rain collector on Calle Belgica with two of 500mm, to solve the problem of water building up at the lowest point of the street, causing homes to flood. This work will be complimented by the replacement of the two 200mm collectors by a 2x2.50m concrete frame, linking with the new channel on Avd. Noruega. CLEANING WORKS Cleaning, clearing, fire prevention works continue around Gran Alacant.
SIERRA SANTA POLA The signage in Sierra Santa Pola has been repaired and updated to include routes and QR information.
SCOOTERS People caught exceeding the number of passengers whilst driving, eg riding tandem on motorised scooters, run the risk of being fined.
FUNDRAISING IN DUNBARS

The Lowedown INTERVIEW
with Lynne
with Bryan Thomas
Hi, my name is Lynne and I have been lucky to call Gran Alacant home for the last 6 years. People fascinate me and I love to hear about their adventures and life stories. Over the next few months, I will be sharing some interviews with GA’s very own Superstars! This month’s interview is with Bryan Thomas. Former Kissogram, Salesman, Chef, Roadie, Photographer, Singer (to name only a few). Bryan’s work history is definitely colourful! He has lived in Gran Alacant with long-term partner Patricia for the last 17 years. Born in Cardiff in 1954, Bryan was raised in the run down area of Splott in a house next to the local Steel Works. He has 2 much older siblings, sister Barbara 8 years older and brother Kelvin 14 years older. Bryan’s Dad Horace fondly described him as “The best mistake that ever happened”. Sadly, Bryan’s Mum Alice died of cancer when he was only 12 years old and his Dad passed away in 1983. Bryan is best known in GA for his singing gigs in the popular bars and restaurants. From a young age, he was always involved in music, playing a range of musical instruments through infant and high school before moving onto play piano and guitar. BRYAN, WHAT WAS THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR MUSIC CAREER? “I joined a couple of bands in my 20’s which resulted in a recording contract and publishing deal when I was 23. We released a few records, but unfortunately it didn’t last.” The adventure into pop stardom proved short lived but not before he appeared on many TV shows, including The Freddie Starr Showcase as one part of the duo “Movietone”. Check out their performance
of Next Time Along on YouTube. Bryan plays the keyboard. TELL ME ABOUT YOUR LONG-TERM PARTNER PATRICIA. “Trish and I met nearly 40 years ago when we both worked in a carpet showroom. I worked on the shop floor and she worked in accounts in the office, our relationship was a bit of a slow burner at first. Trish invited me to her 21st Birthday party and we have been together ever since. She is my inspiration and my rock. I’ve asked her to marry me twice but she just laughed and said no!” BRYAN, TELL ME ABOUT YOUR MOVE TO THE ISLES OF SCILLY “Trish and I moved to The Isles of Scilly off the Cornish coast, in southwest England in the mid-1980s. We worked there for one season and loved it so much we decided to sell our home in Cardiff and bought an apartment and a restaurant there called The Pilot’s Gig. We stayed for the next 30 years." It was in Scilly, the mecca for bird watching, that Bryan developed a passion for birding
and the progression to bird photographer soon followed. BRYAN, WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST CLAIM TO FAME IN THE BIRDING COMMUNITY? “I found the pursumed extinct New Zealand storm Petrel, a bird last seen over 150 years ago.”
Jordan, Egypt and New Zealand. Antarctica was my favourite, all kitted out in the gear in 15 degree Celsius summer heat.”
Fellow bird watcher Bob Flood and Bryan photographed a flock of 20 Storm Petrels from a boat in the Hauraki Gulf off North Island. Bob Flood said, “It was just fantastic to be able to confirm that, against all the odds, the New Zealand storm petrel had managed to survive, undetected, for more than 150 years.” Their re discovery has been hailed by the bird-watching community as one of the most important of recent years. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT BIRDWATCHING? “I have always has an interest in nature. I am grateful that my passion for birdwatching
and photography has taken me all over the world to places such as Africa, South America, Antarctica, Australia, Israel,
Bryan co-wrote The Essential Guide to Birds of the Isle of Scilly with 2 fellow twitchers with foreword by famous Bill Oddie OBE an English writer, comedian, songwriter, musician, artist, birder, conservationist, television presenter and actor (he was also a member of comedy trio The Goodies). If you want to see more of Bryan’s amazing photography, check out his blog: Birding Costa Blanca at https://birdingcostablanca.blogspot. com/?m=1
Thank you for your time and for sharing your story with us.

The one-straw revolution Despite the rapid industrialization of our region during the 60s, 70s and 80s and the dominance of technology in our lives, driving in the summer months through the rural areas of our region still means spotting numerous ‘huertos or huertas’. These two words are normally used interchangeably although strictly speaking a huerto is a short plot of land, usually walled, on which vegetables, legumes and sometimes fruit trees are planted whereas a huerta is a bigger version of a huerto. Huertos can produce crops all year round. However, due to the benign weather we enjoy in Spain, and particularly in our region, springtime is traditionally dedicated to sowing and planting with crops of fruit and vegetables arriving soon after. Families can get almost fully fed from the huerto from May to September. Early fruit like nísperos (loquats) followed by cherries and ‘brevas de San Juan' (early dark figs) are just the prelude to a summer filled with an abundance of cucumbers, alficoz (local variety of cucumber), tomates, peppers, water melons and grapes to name a few. Over the last decades as young people grew distant from the countryside and its traditions, embracing ‘more sophisticated’ lifestyles, it has been the elderly, with their wisdom, experience and time, who kept this summer huerto tradition alive. You can see the family compounds staggered across the countryside with rows of canes forming crosses and proudly holding tomatoes ready to be picked - what a lovely sight! The huertos are definitely about the food but also a family focal point during the summer months. During the worst of the recent pandemic many people, particularly in urban areas, suddenly had time in their hands and apart from embracing ‘Yoga with Adriene’
or daily workouts with Joe Wicks decided that it was time to stop frantically tapping their keyboards and attending pointless conference calls and embraced baking, gardening and veg growing. Who else did it? We definitely did! Many of us discovered how satisfying it is getting your hands dirty and feeding yourself with lovely homegrown food - much more nourishing than Netflix! The movement of urban veg allotments in big cities has been there for many years, however it has grown exponentially following the pandemic. The veg allotment next to our London flat is now running a large waiting list and the council is expanding the site. During a recent visit to Hamburg in Germany we were amazed by the amount of green spaces in the city, ‘guerrilla planting’ in any available space led by neighbours and multiple community spaces filled with veg allotments with lots of people of all ages working on them. Back in Alicante, Juan’s uncle has traditionally been the one in charge of feeding the very large extended family during the summer months with fruit and
veg from his huerto. Unfortunately uncle is not feeling his best at the moment which means that Juan has been helping the family a bit. Every time he comes back from his hometown of Villena, Juan not only fills our kitchen with incredible fresh food but also due to the volume of food available
we have been filling a few more fridges in the neighborhood. Sharing healthy food is a lovely way to create community. We don’t have to go too far to see the huertos, the fertile campo o f Elche is filled with them. But, what about Gran Alacant? Hmmm … uncomfortable silence. It's sad to observe how, despite the privileged setting in which we all live, we are very far from embracing this trend of greening cities and sharing community spaces in our hood. Instead the council keeps on giving
out new building permits commoditizing every single available plot of land. Walking around Gran Alacant has always been difficult due to the deficient urban planning, but now it’s also heartbreaking as new building sites are popping up everywhere. Invasive building techniques, greedy use of previously natural space, lack of green areas included in building plans and the persistent lack of community space are the norm. Will this ever stop? Is the council planning to join Gran Alacant with Santa Pola with urbanización after urbanización? We all know the 2/3 of the housing in Gran Alacant remains empty for 9 months a year so the issue in our community is definitely not lack of already built housing. Why do the council policies keep on prioritizing housing before community building? As a suggestion, wouldn't one of these plots soon to be filled with concrete be better dedicated to a community veg allotment? A place of gathering where neighbors could spend their time, share food and experiences and embrace local traditions could be a great addition to the area. We don’t suggest reinventing the wheel here, we just would like to see our council abandoning their old fashioned vision of urban planning and instead follow what many other communities are doing across the globe. We live in a privileged place that needs to be protected and improved. A healthy environment goes side by side with a healthy community and here public policy plays a very important part.

THE (CONTINUING) ADVENTURES OF THE GA RUNNERS
John (JC) competed in the Durham city 10k which is turning into a regular event in the NE sporting calendar.
At the beginning of July we had our first opportunity to meet up as a group, after, would you believe, a walk. It was too hot to run at that time of day (10:00am). After our walk we enjoyed some liquid refreshments in Molly Malones (see photo). There were still three or four missing from the group but it was a hugely rewarding experience to finally meet some of the group we had only spoken to on WhatsApp. There are some races coming up in the next few months which might see more of us competing as a group out of Gran Alacant. Julie Stevenson from Scotland joined the group this month and has already run with Staffan, who is still into his running streak which is 140 consecutive days and counting. Well done Staffan!!!
Jim and Susan Roberts who live in Don Pueblo sent us a photo this week of their daughter who works in Durham, County Durham. She was visiting the County Council HQ when she spotted a Gran Alacant Runners shirt which was being worn by my good friend, Richard Anderson who runs in Gran Alacant but works at the County Council HQ. It’s a small world.
If you see us join us for a run or say hello. No matter your ability, If you are visiting the area and want to run with someone, please get in touch on 0044/7476851356 Have a great summer and keep hydrated.
GRAN ALACANT WALKING FOOTBALL
Due to the chronic lack of facilities in Gran Alacant compared to the remainder of Santa Pola our Indoor Sessions at the Polideportivo Gran Alacant on Av. D’Escandinavia, 78 every Wednesday at 11am have been discontinued.
Unfortunately we have not been offered any alternate day and/or time. At this time we do not know the situation for August. Some members are able to attend the Tuesday 9am sessions at the Santa Pola Walking Football Group. T: John Fraser 0034/630 582322
