Q: Update on bins at Altomar 2 from July issue

Hi Lou thanks for your help the bins have all been moved back to the original place... bottle bins are still in place but they are no trouble once again thanks.

Graham

Q: Update

on bins

at Altomar 2 from July issue

Hi Lou, I have just received great news from my neighbour Graham, telling me that the bins are being moved back to where they were. Thank you again for your support and encouragement to resolve this important issue.

I must say Susanna has been invaluable in carrying forward to the Town Hall our concerns and we thank her for her great efforts on our behalf.

A great result! Thank you Lou, Jimmy and Yvonne!

If you have concerns about where you live and would like assistance with making an official complaint at the town hall, contact Susanna on:

Q: UK Disabled Blue Badge holder

Hi, I am a UK Disabled Blue Badge holder and since Brexit I have been unable to use my Blue Badge while on holiday in Spain. I have heard that in some Spanish provinces UK Blue Badges are now accepted for use while on holiday if they are accompanied by a Spanish reduced mobility permit.

Am I able to use my Blue Badge while on holiday in the province of Valencia, especially the Alicante, Santa Pola, Elche areas and if so where would I get a Spanish mobility permit from and what would I need to show other than my Blue Badge and passport to obtain the permit. I have also read I can print out a permit but I'm dubious of that information and I would like to know if this is correct.

Any information or advice will be gratefully accepted, thank you.

Kathleen

A: GA Advertiser

We asked Cuenca Lawyers for help with clarifying this question and they also spoke with police. After checking various information, the answer they managed to get is negative. According to Valencia Government website Parking Cards issued by the United Kingdom for people with reduced mobility are not valid in Spain.

Q: Local Police

Hello Lou, can you please answer a question for me? What is the point of a local police station when an elderly neighbour was assaulted in a gated car park and robbed of a necklace. We went to the police station and we were told to go to Guardia civil in Santa Pola. I don’t understand it… our neighbour is in her 80’s?! Lorraine

A: GA Advertiser

If there is a theft, a robbery, or you lose your passport, driving license or any important documents, or you are a victim of a violent incident, you will need to report it at Guardia Civil in Santa Pola.

If there is noise, a row with neighbours, or a traffic incidence, you can contact Policia Local in Gran Alacant. The Gran Alacant office is open until 21.30, but there is a patrol car in Gran Alacant at all times.

POLICIA LOCAL : 965 41 11 03

Q: New bins

Good afternoon Lou, the situation remains the same or worse... They have replaced the garbage cans with new ones but they have taken them further!! They have placed it next to the entrance to the Monte y Mar urbanization, with 2 places of garbage in less than 100 meters! Before I had to walk 800 meters to get to the garbage can, now 900!! There is no garbage can next to the park, Norwegian Avenue 1 (in front of Aldi) and even less pedestrian crossing from the park to the Chinese Supermarket, one day there will be an accident and they will regret... I hope you decide to listen one day... Thank you Greetings, Jesus

A: Borja Merino

We are investigating this issue together with technicians, the cleaning department, the citizen security department and local police to study all the possibilities and provide a solution.

Q: Cleaning in Gran Alacant

Hello Lou, I'm sorry to be so annoying about the issue of the public deficit in cleaning, but it is very sad to see the number of places in which it is overflowing. The problem is the image and the possible lack of sanitation, we expose ourselves to odours, possible rats or similar.

I think the typical political response of: "we will process it to the body in charge" or "we will look at it, thank you" is not enough. Please could you help convince the councilors to put one more container of each type in those areas that fit - even if only in these summer and boom months, may be enough.

Or, try to show that perhaps people will stop doing tourism because of the painful image and then they will stop giving money to this area and the problems will be of more types, that is, they think in the medium long term. Or move the foreign embassies of people who spend the summer here, to send letters to the city council letting them see that they either change or they will not give a good image so that their citizens come to spend the summer here.

And personally, I am tired of seeing Oceania Avenue that is almost never cleaned, only when I write to you and they still do not put recycling containers in place, they deprive us of this and we pay taxes like the rest and I no longer want the answer that they give me in your magazine of "we will study it" "we will send it to the department in charge." The next thing concerns judicial matters against urbaser and the city council for lack of services and discrimination.

I hope you can enjoy the summer and I hope we don't see a lot of garbage and bad smells. Good day, David

Q: Dirty Gran Alacant

Hi Lou, please find attached an example of rubbish overspill and dirtiness of the pavements which is in my opinion becoming worse and worse.

As more people come to live here there needs to be more maintenance and cleaning. There should also be more taxes to pay for this of course.

GA ELECTRICIAN CUSTOMER REVIEW

I needed ceiling fans for my property in Gran Alacant and found the advert for Gary Downes in the Gran Alacant advertiser online. Gary got and installed three new ceiling fans for me. They are an asset for this time of the year as they are remote controlled, LED and quiet.

It was peace of mind having an electrical job carried out by a qualified and professional electrician who has been working in the area for many years too. I would have no hesitation in recommending Gary Downes for other electrical jobs as he is reliable, professional, tidy and helpful. - Sharon Jones

If the bins are really the same size as before then they need to be emptied more regularly in the summer months.

On a professional level we have had rental clients complain about precisely these two issues. Clients who have been coming for years and are noticing the deterioration of the surroundings. Please pass on my comments to the councillor.

Kind Regards, Helen

A: Borja Merino

Dear David and Helen,

An URGENT request has been made to Urbaser to reinforce the service and containers given the current situation. And it will continue to be demanded in the coming days. The containers have the same capacity as the previous ones. We are aware of the situation and will try to make improvements in the cleanliness of Gran Alacant in the upcoming months.

TACKLING ILLEGAL DUMPING IN GRAN ALACANT

In response to the persistent issue of illegal dumping, the municipal cleaning services have launched an intensive collection effort. Despite the numerous household items left on streets, only one resident had notified for proper collection.

An intensive campaign has commenced in Gran Alacant to address the widespread illegal dumping of household items across the neighborhood. Gran Alacant councilors, Óscar Valenzuela and Borja Merino, alongside Cleaning Councilor Encarni Ramírez, are overseeing this initiative.

The Santa Pola City Council offers a free home collection service for household items and pruning waste. Residents can easily prevent public dumping and maintain the cleanliness of our streets by contacting Urbaser.

Illegal dumping on public roads or vacant lots can result in fines up to 751 euros. The Local Police are actively identifying and sanctioning offenders.

Councilors expressed disappointment over continued uncivil behavior despite efforts to modernise our cleaning and waste collection services. They urge residents to utilise the free home collection service by calling Urbaser at 966 693 955 or sending a WhatsApp to 639 537 476. UBER

To address the long queues and lack of taxis at Alicante-Elche Airport, AENA and Elche City Council have introduced two major VTC companies, Cabify and Uber. At the end of June, Uber began to operate with four vehicles, with plans to expand to 40 vehicles across the province, including 10 in Elche. Shortly after, Cabify began its service with four vehicles and exclusive collection points at the airport.

This move aims to reduce the wait times, which can extend up to two hours, especially during off-peak hours. Cabify will offer an exclusive parking area for tourists at Alicante-Elche Airport, enhancing convenience.

Both companies will provide a muchneeded boost to airport transport, offering new options for both locals and visitors. Uber's introduction marks its expansion to the 9th and 10th Spanish cities, while Cabify's presence will further support airport and city travel needs.

CORREOS OFFICIALS MEET WITH SANTA POLA LEADERS TO IMPROVE GA POST OFFICE

Santa Pola Mayor Loreto Serrano and Gran Alacant Councillor Óscar Valenzuela recently met with Correos officials Jesús Salinas and Rosario Medina to address

issues at the Gran Alacant post office. The discussion focused on extending the post office’s opening hours and enhancing delivery services.

Concerns highlighted included frequent delivery failures, limited weekend hours, insufficient customer waiting areas, and the small size of the post office. Serrano and Valenzuela urged the Correos team, including distribution branch heads and local administrators, to take action to resolve these ongoing problems and improve overall service in the area.

SANTA POLA LIGHTHOUSE VIEWPOINT NOW FULLY ACCESSIBLE

The Department of Environment has completed the walkway that connects the lighthouse road to the popular Mediterranean viewpoint, El Mirado Del Faro de Santa Pola.

Ángel Piedecausa, Councilor for the Environment, announced, “We have completed the full accessibility of the Santa Pola lighthouse viewpoint for people with reduced mobility, fulfilling one of the suggestions we received from users, which is now a reality.”

This project culminates an accessibility initiative connecting the parking area near the lighthouse to the iconic suspended viewpoint offering panoramic views of the Mediterranean and Tabarca Island.

A 200m walkway made of plastic wood, a 100% recycled material from plastic waste manufactured by Integrados, a Villenabased company that employs people with different abilities, was installed. Now, the final 25m section over the existing cobblestones, which previously made movement difficult, has been completed, ensuring full connectivity.

An emotional poignant story My Recommended Book of the Month Dignity

& Grace

On her 21st birthday, gifted cellist Iona Muir receives a package from her estranged father containing a letter from her mother Grace, a talented musician who tragically died 10 years earlier. Reeling from what she reads, Iona soon discovers a mysterious faded photograph of Grace hidden inside her cello case.

Honouring her mother’s request, Iona visits Grace’s beloved music teacher; taking the first steps on an emotional trail of discovery that has been left for her. As Grace’s story unfolds, Iona gains a deeper insight into the mother she lost and the heartbreaking truth about Grace’s last months.

The more Iona learns, the more she is drawn back to her family home, on the remote Scottish Orkney Isles and to her father.

Love is in Masa Square

Dan, 29, married girlfriend of 5 years, Ellie, 27, in a beautiful ceremony with celebrations that took place in Masa Square last month.

ELLIE, HOW DID YOU MEET?

“We met after Dan contacted me through the social media platform Instagram.”

HOW DID HE PROPOSE?

“The proposal was at the Shangri-La Hotel in The Shard in London. Dan surprised me with the proposal in our room.”

TELL US ABOUT THE STAG/HEN DOS?

“Dan’s stag do was at the horse races. Thirty of them went to the Grand National in Liverpool. I had two hen do’s. The first was in England in a local bar that my sister hired. There was about 50 girls and Danny Gould was my DJ. My second hen do was in Ibiza.”

WHY GA FOR YOUR WEDDING?

“My Mum and Dad have a holiday home here. I have been coming here since I was seven so it has always been a second home to me. Dan loves Gran Alacant and as we are friends with the businesses in Masa Square, it seemed like a great idea to have it here.”

TELL US ABOUT THE WEDDING PLANNING & DECORATION

“There was no wedding planner or co-ordinator. I have my own interiors business called ‘Ellie’s Finishing Touches’ so we were able to plan and do all the decorations ourselves. Masa Square is not your typical venue for a wedding so we had to think outside the box. I wanted to keep everything rustic looking with a Spanish feel, so we used lots of lace and foliage. We made all the table flowers in England and brought everything over in 6 very full suitcases!”

SPECIAL THANKS

“We would like to give special thanks to staff at The Belfry and The Pub who worked so hard with the food and drinks, especially Stephanie who was my right hand woman for the day. She oversaw everything and was brilliant.

We are very grateful to everyone who helped and to our family and friends who shared our special day with us."

BUSINESS INTERVIEW

ABOUT ANDY’S UPHOLSTERY

Andy’s Upholstery is an Artisanal upholstery company, with over 45 years’ experience in both the UK and Spain. Husband and wife team, Andy and Marianne, set up their first business in England in 1997 doing domestic and trade work; clients included Radisson Edwardian, Bass Leisure Retail, Harrods, The Ritz Group amongst many others. Andy and Marianne came to Spain in 2001 where they have continued to add to their long list of satisfied customers.

WHAT DO YOU SPECIALISE IN

“We are traditional upholsterers with expertise in antiques and bespoke pieces. We also offer a French polishing service which includes replacement or repairs of wooden features. Our work varies from sofas, garden furniture, boats, and motorhomes to just about anything that can be covered in fabric including headboards, ottomans, hot tub covers and dining room chairs. We have extensive experience in commercial environments too including hotels, restaurants and bars.”

WHERE ARE YOU LOCATED

“After several years of being based in the village of La Romana, this summer we are moving to larger premises situated between La Romana and Aspe. This is where we will be re-cycling and upgrading pre-loved pieces, more bespoke furniture along with our own new designs. We can supply foam cut to size and an extremely large selection of fabric including velvet, chenille, flat weaves and a large selection of outdoor fabrics which are UV and shower resistant.”

WHAT MADE YOU START THIS BUSINESS

“We saw a gap in the market for bespoke quality upholstering. There were a group of customers whose needs were not being met and an opportunity for tapping into a new market based around fulfilling people’s need for beautiful pieces of furniture.”

WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE

“I have been in this business all my working life. I started in this industry at the age of 16 so I have been around a while.”

SHOULD YOU REUPHOLSTER AN EXISTING PIECE OF FURNITURE

“Do you love its style? Does it have sentimental value to you? Is it quality? If the answer is yes then definitely. If the piece of furniture is of good quality, the framework in good condition but the soft furnishings have become worn or broken or you want to change your colour scheme and styling, then we can help. You can have the piece re-upholstered in your style from our huge selection of classic and contemporary fabrics.

It is a crafted skill and the work is done by hand. It takes time but it is definitely worth the wait. You end up with your much-loved piece of furniture like new again - in a bespoke new design that you have chosen to suit your individuality.”

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST

“The transformation process is the most fulfilling part of my job, giving pieces a new lease of life. I enjoy the transformation from a tired item of furniture to a fully renovated piece. I also enjoy the client’s reaction when they see our finished work.”

BIGGEST CHALLENGE

“Our biggest challenge is time; there are not enough hours in the day to restore all the pieces we want to work on.”

CUSTOMER TESTIMONIAL

“We had our dining room chairs upholstered by Andy and decided to get our settees done too. The workmanship exceeded our expectations. They are amazing. It is as if we have just bought brand new furniture all over again. We would highly recommend Andy and his team to anyone thinking about upholstering their furniture.

Regards Mary & Graham.”

ALICANTE BY TRAM: A STROLL THROUGH HISTORY AND MODERNITY

The coast from Alicante to Denia is nowadays served by an air conditioned tram service that whisks passengers from a modern underground station in the centre of Alicante up the coast stopping at important towns and cities such as Altea and Benidorm. This railway link however has a longer and more interesting history.

Much of the line route currently used by the coastal tram was previously a narrow gauge railway known as the Trenet de la

Marina. The cuttings, tunnels, bridges and stations that now serve the tram line were originally built in the early 20th century to move passengers and freight up and down the coast north of Alicante. The idea for a coastal train line was first conceived in the 1860s but none of the original plans came to fruition, with various schemes and companies being proposed and abandoned. Finally, in the first decade of the 20th century a firm proposal was approved and supported by the government.

The line was planned in two stages, Alicante to Villajoyosa and Villajoyosa to Denia. Work on the line commenced in 1911 with King Alfonso XIII attending the laying of the first stone of the northern part of the line at Villajoyosa on 13th February 1911. Work progressed well and the line was operating along its entire length by early 1914. The line was originally planned as both a freight and passenger line, indeed the freight was arguably more important considering the relatively sparse population of parts of the coast in the early 20th century. Over its lifetime the railway regularly carried some surprisingly heavy industrial cargo including aggregates from quarrying and fuel oil from Alicante harbour.

However, as the economy of our coast changed and tourism developed, so too did the services provided by the little coastal railway. In 1971 a British business man even developed the somewhat twee sounding Limón Exprés (“Lemon Express”) to provide the tourists of Benidorm with excursions to Gata de Gorgos. This popular little heritage style railway remained in service until 2005 when age finally caught up with its elderly rolling stock.

Taking the tram (lines 1, 3 and 9) that runs on the old railway’s path is today one of the most enjoyable ways to see the Alicante coast. The line dips in and out of cuttings and tunnels; at times running alongside the beach and through the centre of towns.

Together with a visiting British friend we decided to visit the place where the line started in the beautiful old port town of Villajoyosa. Famous for its multi coloured houses and beautiful old town, Villajoyosa is a popular destination due to its wide and pretty beach and fine selection of beachfront restaurants and cafes. The town is also the home of the famous Valor brand of chocolate and we indulged in traditional drinking chocolate and sugary churros at the Valor chocalateria & museum.

Villajoyosa tram station is the former town railway station and its historic role in the development of the railway line is marked by a group of preserved station buildings and information boards. We took time to admire these before hopping aboard our 21st century tram to go one stop down the line to enjoy lunch on the beach El Paraiso.

The Alicante tram system is due to be extended to the airport and Elche over

the next few years, a logical and sensible development. One wishes that the line could also be extended to our communities in Gran Alacant and Santa Pola thereby making us part of the wider life of the coast. As traffic increases on our roads, especially in the holiday season, modern, reliable and affordable public transport would be a great benefit.

Since its inauguration in 1914 as the Trenet de la Marina, the coastal rail line has served the people of Alicante and the Costa Blanca and has developed alongside their communities. At various times in its history it has been an industrial artery, a tourist curiosity and finally part of a modern air conditioned mass transit network. We invite you to step out of your cars and take the tram for a trip up the coast and back in history!

The cost is €10 per month which covers the buying of the music and the printing of the lyrics. Enthusiasm is more important than ability so either pop along to see us or join our FB group:

HEAT WAVES & “SWIFTIES”

Despite the title, since she has got nothing to do with our profession, we are not going to write about Taylor’s world tour in any way!

At this moment, everyone should know heat waves are going to be more and more common (and more intense) summer after summer. Every live being suffers and weakens with these high temperatures. Statistics say these heat waves cause, directly or not, thousands of deaths every year.

Extremely high temperatures may also kill plants and, of course, animals. In this case, we are not just talking about heat stroke, whose symptoms we have described several times in the past, but also another kind of serious problems such as respiratory failure and dehydration.

If we are talking about controlled domestic animals, prevention is very easy:

• Keeping them in secure cool places away from direct sunlight

• Providing free access to fresh water

When going outdoors:

• Avoiding the worst moments (which are, in these cases, from 10h to 19h)

• Stopping every kind of physical activity

Most of our dogs would be happy to run and play with us till death, so we have to take precautions for them and leave outdoor games for later, when heat wave is over.

Another typical thing in the case of very high temperatures is our pets stop eating. In most cases it shouldn’t worry us, but we have to pay attention to make sure they are drinking enough water and making enough pee. If there is any kind of doubt about it, is time to ask the Vet.

And, what about wildlife during heat waves? Most of them, due to natural selection and their instinct of survival, have resources to deal with it, in a similar way that they would find a safe shelter during a storm. The

Liliana Aldeguer Cerdán 793

English translation by Sergio Reina Esteban col 747

worst prepared ones in these cases are bird chicks which are still living in the nest and haven’t learned to fly yet. Sometimes the temperature inside the nest is so high that they go out looking for a cooler place and fall from the nest. If this happens, we have to make sure their parents can manage to bring them back to their nest. If this is the case, providing a “sunblind” (for example, a cardboard box) to the chick till it’s rescued by its parents, would be enough. If we can’t see the parents and the place is dangerous (traffic, cats, etc), it’s time to call Environmental Agents, because in most cases we are talking about endangered and protected species, and it’s absolutely forbidden to adopt them.

A particular example of this would be swifts. It’s very common during heat waves for swifts to collapse due to high temperatures, and this species has an additional problem when this happens: except for breeding, these birds live (and eat, and mate… and sleep!!) on the wing. They are perfect precision flying machines, but… they have a defective and rudimentary “gear”. Their legs and feet are so short and small that they are completely unable to take off from the ground (they must jump from a high place).

If you see a swift lying on the ground you have to know it will certainly die if not picked up. In some cases, all it needs is to take a rest for a few minutes and then is ready to fly again. The way to make sure is very easy - put it on your palm away from the ground, and if it feels strong enough, it will jump from your palm and start flying again: mission accomplished! If it’s too young or too weak to fly, we should call Environmental Agents or SOS Vencejos. Swifts should be treated only by very experienced people, and are absolutely necessary for controlling mosquito overpopulation, so every swift life matters. If you are unable to contact Environmental Agents or SOS Vencejos you can bring us the swift and we will contact them for you.

Thanks very much in advance.

Gran Alacant’s ELCHE CF SUPPORTERS GROUP

A group of football fans in Gran Alacant have their own Elche CF supporters club to attend home games at the stadium and watch away games in local bars.

Home games see the group move around different bars in GA, with the usual bars used being Happy’s at the GA Centre while Tommy’s is the regular spot up the hill. Tickets can be purchased via the club website at www.elchecf.es and there is also the occasional spare ticket available through the group as well.

Jornadas in Spain have games all spread out with each match being televised. It is

A late stutter to last season meant Elche are once again in Segunda - the second division of Spanish football. Hopes are high of another promotion push to get back up to La Liga. The season starts with a home game versus Huesca on 18 August at 19:30 with the next home game on 2 September against Córdoba.

GA SOCIAL CYCLISTS

There is a vibrant group of social cyclists in Gran Alacant who meet up outside of Molly Malones most days of the week at around 10:00am.

We ride hybrid and off road bikes, are of varying ages, fitness levels and both sexes and usually cycle the rural roads and paths around Gran Alacant, Santa Pola and Elche which means 12 – 25 miles per ride.

Fitter, stronger cyclists can opt to take different routes but, we always meet up at a designated stop for a coffee, and importantly, a natter. Sometimes the group is just two cyclists, whilst other times it can be as many as 10-12 and as a testament to the group, in the years we have been meeting, many strong friendships have been formed.

As we don’t all live in Gran Alacant we communicate via a Whatsapp Group so it is best to check on the Whatsapp group who is around and who is going out on any particular day.

If you want to join us please contact us on Whatsapp: 00353 / 87 991 6020

Gran Alacant Walking Football is taking a break for the month of August. The Wednesday sessions will be up and running (well, walking!) again in September.

Walking football is an excellent way to keep fit and meet new people. Designed for the more mature gents (over 50) it is played at a more leisurely pace but still has a competitive edge! Teaming up for Charity!

Although Gran Alacant Womens Walking Footballers are taking a well-earned break from their regular Thursday meet ups, behind the scenes activity has not stopped.

On Thursday the 26th of September at 10.30hrs there will be a fundraising “friendly” match against the Gran Alacant Men’s team. The match will take place on the Astroturf pitch at the GA Leisure centre and is supported by our sponsors GAHomefinders.

The groups will be aiming to raise much needed funds for a locally based charity in La Marina – Paul Cunningham Nurses

Paul Cunningham Nurses Charity was the vision of Jennifer who on her return to Spain after losing her son Paul to spinal cancer aged 33 years was shocked to learn that there was no hospice care nursing available in Spain. Jennifer is the perfect person to offer a guiding and inspirational leadership to the charity.

Paul spent six months in a Sue Ryder Hospice with Jennifer constantly by his side. Whilst they were both living in the hospice, she promised Paul to do something worthwhile in his memory. She was waiting for the right time, people, and opportunity to come along, so that she could inject her understanding, experience, and passion. Hence in 2008, the creation of Paul Cunningham Nurses Charity.

The charity aims to assess and, subject to that assessment, deliver high quality care to terminal prognosis patients in their own home.

The much-anticipated September event is expected to be tense, thrilling, an example of exceptional footballing expertise and worthy of first slot on Match of the Day... OK maybe not any of those but it is guaranteed to be fun and with the main aim being to raise funds for such a worthwhile cause surely an event not to be missed!

Spectators are most welcome – please enter via the gate at the top of the old market car park for a 10.30 start. There will be a raffle with prizes and post- match refreshments at Cafeteria El Tio Chato (next door)

We look forward to welcoming you!

Gran Alacant Ladies GALs

Our June lunch was held at Hemingways where we enjoyed a tasty meal. They donated a free lunch for our raffle in aid of Elche Childrens Care Home which was won by a very happy Selina Bruce. Last month, Skipper Bar had also generously donated and extra raffle prize of lunch for two which was won by Catheine Knowles. Well Done!! The total of the two raffles raised E200.00 which was fantastic for our charity.

Our next lunch will be at the Belfry on the 25th July followed by Ciel Largo on the 29th August and lovely Skipper Bar again on 27th September. Please join our facebook page and see all the events we have coming up.

We enjoyed a friendly Coffee/Breakfast on the 11th July at our usual watering hole, Frieduria Hispania, and was hosted by lovely Natalia and her mama. It was great to see new ladies and especially additions to our international membership. Our next meet up will be the 8th August.

Dont forget to check our events and add your names. Gals (Gran Alacant Ladies) facebook. Please answer the two joining questions to bcome members of our site.

If any local businesses would like to donate a prize to help us raise money for Elche Childrens Care Home, please get in touch.
