Hi everybody,

We would like to thank the TOURISM COUNCILLOR for enabling Jose Manuel Blasco to join our magazines monthly column. Many of you will surely have met Jose at the Tourist Information Counter in Santa Pola. He always exudes enthusiasm for all that is happening in our area. Here are his suggestions of “Where to visit” and ‘What to see” for this month

In December we will have parades of Moors and Christians held in Alicante and in Monforte del Cid from 5th to 9th. There are two main parades - one at night and the other one at midday, followed by fireworks on the last day. In Santa Pola, like every year, we will celebrate on December the 10th at about 8p.m. in the harbour area the arrival of our Madonna Virgin de Loreto. There will be a little performance about the arrival and then procession from the harbour to the Castle. On the 14th of December Santa Pola Tourist Department organizes once again a guided tour in English to the Salt Museum. This tour is very popular and booking in advance is required. Local fiestas are also held in Alfaz del Pi, Agost and Callosa d’En Sarria. Pilgrimages are taking place in Denia and Sella. Also, please do not forget the spectacular “battle of flour” which takes place in Ibi, “Els Enfarinats” on the 28th.

The pilgrimage “Venida de la Virgen” will also take place on December 28th. The pilgrimage stars on Tamarit beach with a representation of the arrival and discovering the Madonna of Elche. This month all concerts and cultural events will be held in the bib tent outside the Fortress-Castle. A little parade will be held on 24th of December. The biggest parade will be held on the 5th of January “The Three Kings” Parade.” The best one of these parades is the one held in Alcoy, it’s simply magical! I would like to make a special mention of the most important sport event held in Santa Pola - the International Santa Pola Half Marathon held on the 21st of January at 10:30 a.m.. Come and enjoy this fantastic event! ¡Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2019 to all of you!

Hello Everybody, Another great night on Halloween in Gran Alacant was followed by a great production of Snow White from the M.A.B.S. team, which played to a full house every night. A special mention must go to Jean Reiterbund for all her hard work raising funds for M.A.B.S. as well as the cast - well done all of you! Lot of great venues to choose from once again for this year’s Christmas dinners and New Year’s parties – we hope you have a great time wherever you chose to celebrate. Have a great Christmas & prosperous New Year, Until next year, Ged & Lou Our little dog Zia and our cat Casper have hidden themselves away in the magazine, can you find them? Last month Zia was on page 22 and Casper on page 59 & 32

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, including that from a representative from the Town Hall, as we have since May 2005.

If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine - granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.co.uk Q: Gangway Hello Ged and Lou, Some 4 years ago you asked the Town Hall if they could open the path between Urb. Monte Faro and Santana Resort to have an easy access to Santa Pola. Today one must walk around all the urbanizations. The answer from the Town Hall was that they could not open the gangway due to construction work going on. The construction is long gone, so can you please contact the town-hall again? Regards, O. Handeland

municipal lawyers study this issue, you will have a proper answer to your question. Q: Charity Collections Hi Ged and Lou, I just had a man at the door (Calle Holanda) saying he was collecting money for a school for disabled children. He had the request printed in different languages and official looking papers and ID card to (make it) look legit. He also showed me a list with names of people who donated, their nationality and the amount of around â‚Ź20. I don't think I saw any Spanish names. He was acting all familiar, saying he knew my grandfather (who wasn't there). I didn't have any money on me. He said that even spare change would do. I asked him for a website, he couldn't give me one. I didn't give him any money. I was wondering if you know anything about this? I should have noted his name down, but I was a bit overwhelmed. Kind regards, Karen

Town Hall Answer: We think that the former Gran Alacant Councillor gave the answer that you are referring to. However, we have now transferred to the Urbanism Councillor, in order to study if it is possible to establish a pedestrian walk because this walk is meant to be a rights of way walk, belonging to a private property. However, when the

1, I am enclosing the series of messages between us in 2015 regarding the Subus service 1B from the Airport. My question now is that they have merged/taken over Baile, will they be using this stop? I ask because we were on the Baile service to the Airport this week and the driver stopped at this stop to pick up passengers.

ZEST RAISED 155€

They can no longer claim that it is not one of their stops and it would be much more convenient for travellers from Gran Alacant without affecting their timetable to any extent. You might point out to them the extra revenue they could collect, especially if it is well publicised in your excellent magazine. Regards Geoff Few more questions for Vectalia: 2, Previous lines to Alicante, which stopped at MASA and Don Pueblo stops – do these no longer exist? 3, Why do certain return buses from Alicante not stop in Gran Alacant? Reply from Vectalia: Hello good morning Lou and Ged, 1, Airport Bus: The airport bus stops at Commercial Centre, Sueño Azul and Carabassi Stop - these are the official stops. 2. Santa Pola/Alicante Bus: also stops at the MAIN stops only, which are Commercial Centre, Sueño Azul, and Carabassi Stop. The previous special lines, which stopped outside MASA office and Don Pueblo stop, have been cancelled. These bus stops as well as all other smaller bus stops in Gran Alacant are serviced by URBANO bus. 3. Return Bus from Alicante: certain lines from Alicante to Santa Pola are considered as “direct” lines such as 8.15h, 13:00h, 14:00h, 18:00h and they can only stop at Commercial Centre if you request the stop from the driver. Hope this helps to clarify your questions, Kind Regards, Maria Baile/Vectalia

ZEST forties night was enjoyed by all people! ZEST raised 155€ from the raffle and a contribution from Zest for the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal and it was received by Eric Goble of the Gran Alacant & La Marina Branch. For starters homemade garden vegetable soup was served, followed by sausage, mash and onion gravy. The sausages were the new Zest sausages. The main course was followed apple pie with custard. The 3 course

meal was followed by a forties quiz and a wartime sing-along. Some people dressed in a forties theme. ZEST have continued to raise funds for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal through out November.

BARRY’S BITS OF NEWS: Thinking to myself the other day…at the end of another year… it is now 15 years, 15 Christmases and 180 editions that I have been writing the news for this magazine. I always think to myself, what on earth will I write about this month…thankfully something always crops up…so here it goes again… ********** I see that climate control could affect us in Spain during the next 30 years. Rising heat, less rain, and warming by 2.6 degrees. So warmer winters and even hotter summers. Sounds OK to me. ********** The 61st session took place on the 8thNovember of the Gran Alacant Oldies Walking football club, at the Gran Alacant sports hall.

If you would like to join us, or ask more, or even turn up to watch, please email Barry for more information at laneinspain@hotmail.com ********** It seems that it is not just in Spain, where Ford have cut down their car production. The same is happening here in Spain, where their plant here is closing for a short period, due to lack of car sales. ********** The Vicenta Russo School is unheated because of a debt by the City Council with the gas company. The government team has filed a complaint against the supplier firm. And now the fight start … someone has to pay and everyone is blaming everybody else. How come year after year has gone by, without this bill being paid. How has it got this far? **********

14 players took part plus 1 referee and 1 injured player on the sidelines. There were also four spectators looking to, perhaps, play in the future.

With Remembrance Day just three days away, it was decided by a ballot within the club, to donate some of our match day funds to the local British Legion. Three members from the British Legion were there for the presentation from one of the players, James, who suggested the idea. The picture shows the presentation taking place.

The attached picture shows the very popular bar on the sea front of Benidorm. It is a bar that many people visit and is popular, and unfortunately causes massive problems to residents in the vicinity. The bar has been warned may times by the police and has now been given a date in November to close its doors. That is not all however, they are supposed to be opening their doors again, further down the road, where there are, hopefully, no residents to annoy. ********** Good to see that our health centre may have a substantial amount of money spent on it to renovate and upgrade all of the facilities. REMEBRANCE SERVICE This year, as we commemorate 100 years since the signing of the treaty that ended the First World War, it was apposite that Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday co-incided. Gran Alacant & La Marina Branch of the RBL marked this date with a bilingual Service in San Fulgencio which governs the Urbanisation of La Marina. Around 200 Spanish and British worshippers followed this open-air service, which was conducted jointly by Father Ramon Belda, and Father Richard Seabrooke SSC, who was assisted by Father Richard DunstanMeadows. The Last Post and Reveille were played by John Atkins. Heading the list of honoured guests were the Alcalde of San Fulgencio, Manuel Gomez, and Councillors Vincente Murcia, Joel Noches, and Maria Angeles Ariorte. Plus the Jefe of the Policia Local – Manuel Bailen. We are indebted to the Ayutamiento of San

12

Me suena bien.

M.A.B.S. Snow White Raised 3336€

DIRECTED BY JEAN REITERBUND SPONSORED BY MAC&ANGIE, AQUARIUS

We went to the Gran Alacant panto on the 14th end of year show organised and produced by Jean Reiterbund. All of the shows and many many more fundraising activities by Jean have raised so much money over the years as she has been the major fund-raiser in the area for her MABS Cancer Support Fund. As I have been the MABS treasurer since March doing the accounts for Jean and MABS, the 4 evenings of panto raised the fabulous sum of 3,336 euros so far, and donations are still coming in from the booby girls at the panto. The total that Jean has raised so far since 20 March 2018 now stands at €6,687.00 Angie and Mac at Aquarius Restaurant, Carabassi Centre, sponsored the costumes and props. Kevin Tierney who did a grand job as compère was sponsored by the Belfry restaurant in MASA Square. Make up was expertly created by Mary Lambeth and Susan Roberts was on hand to do any needlework needed on the costumes. The Pub, The Phoenix restaurant and Jacqui Canale (Reiki Room) donated raffle prizes. Jean has dedicated her time here on Gran Alacant to help others, and has been totally tireless in the raising of this money, year after year for 14 years. Hours and hours of her time are taken up to helping raise these massively important funds. Barry and Sandra Lane M.A.B.S. Treasures

International Practicioner of Holistic Medicine, fully licensed & insured Hello readers, Welcome to December!

Make sure you always have breakfast, it really is the most important meal of the day. Porridge is a perfect choice, throw in some blueberries and follow with a banana for even better results. Eat lots of fresh fruits, vegetables and wholegrains (brown rice, lentils etc) Try more foods containing tryptophan, such as fish, turkey, avocado, beans, bananas. Drink plenty of water…get that 2 litres down you.

Do you find yourself in the winter blues at this time of year? Miss family more at Christmas time or always feel a little detached from all the excitement everyone else seems to be sharing.

There are plenty of supplements you can take but remember if you are on any prescription medicine for depression to consult your doctor before trying any supplements.

Well allow me to let you into a little secret, you most certainly aren’t alone!

B-Vitamins are great, also a Vitamin C daily with your food.

One in four of us suffer these problems and I want to let you know about simple little holistic remedies you can do to help lift your spirits in time for Santa’s arrival.

Ginseng is also very useful as this boosts the adrenal gland. The capsules are good to take with breakfast and lunch, but not at night. Also, do not take ginseng if you are on blood thinners.

Natural Remedies: Avoid (alright let’s be realistic here, it is holiday season after all) so at least reduce your alcohol intake. It can make depression worse as it lowers levels of the feel-good hormone serotonin, as well as B-vitamins needed for energy and nerve health in the mind and body. Eat less refined sugar, processed foods and caffeine.

Taking regular exercise is vital in the fight against depression. It can help you sleep better, look better and make you feel better about yourself. Even if you suffer pain, there will be something out there that you can do whether it is walking, yoga, swimming, Tai Chi, chair aerobics or a full body workout. Just do it. HIKING WITH HEIDI & OLLI THE PATHS LESS TRAVELED

Cabezón de Oro

Driving Time: 45mins Walking Time: 4hrs/10kms Google maps directions: Cuevas de Canelobre, CV-776, 03111 Busot, Alicante

My name is Heidi and I come from Helsinki, Finland. With my husband Olli-Pekka and our 3 dogs we live in Gran Alacant and enjoy the brilliant Mediterranean climate and possibility of discovering new hiking routes all over our Alicante province and sometimes even a bit further. Ironically, I have a fear of heights, but I love the views from tops of the mountains too much to stay away. Our dogs are getting older so all the hikes need to be suitable for them too as they always go on our adventures with us. I also love photography and always take load of pictures from our hikes. This is my favourite hike and my Christmas present to all the hikers who have not discovered this mountain yet. The circular route is quite easy. The challenge is the elevation and the distance. In spite of what its name would literally indicate, “Cabezón de Oro”, or the old gold mine that would exist in the place, the word Gold does not make reference

to the mineral of the gold, but to the water. During the Al-Andalus period, the Arabs kept the Iberian word “Ur” to refer to this mountain, which means “Water”, since water flowed inside it (Cuevas de Canelobre).

You’ll find the starting point easy following Google Maps to Cuevas de Canelobre / Canelobre Caves. From Busot area you can see road signs to the caves. About 600 meters before the caves you’ll see a long parking area on your left side with the route information sign post next to it. This is where we leave our car and continue on foot towards left facing the mountain to route PR-CV 2. The first part of the route is on the

It’s a long hike up, so we preferred to do that on the cooler side of the mountain. The signs for this route are very good. Both times we’ve hiked this route, we saw lots of other hikers too, so you’ll most likely have a chance to ask for help with directions if needed.

When you reach the caves, there’s toilet and a little kiosk where you can buy cool refreshments or coffee. Naturally you can also visit the caves. There are picnic tables so you can just sit down and enjoy the view and refreshments. You deserve it after this hike!!!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2019! You’ll have the option to go up to the Heidi & Olli peak of Cabezón de Oro (1210 m above sea) which is a separate leg from otherwise circular route. MIRROR CORNER “So this is Christmas¨…

DONE, TO DO, NO EXPECTATIONS, LOVE OR HATE

Ho Ho Ho … Christmas lights and jingle bells, carol singers singing festive songs, shops open late and massive queues everywhere, people and celebrations all around! How do you feel about it? Is the Christmas the same as it was when you were a child? Do you feel a change? Or not?

Most of them are totally false! When Christmas is over they go back to being same old same! D: Oh…we always end up eating and drinking way too much, putting on weight and then starting the New Year feeling bad and trying to lose it all again! E: I don´t know how Santa could put my Wii into the chimney without breaking it! I am really worried about that. I know he will bring it to me because I was the best boy in the world! F: I don’t like the idea of traveling abroad just to sit around the table with my relatives. The weather is usually very cold and we feel trapped inside. I would like to stay here and see my family on warmer days if I could choose. G: What a stomachache!! Uff these days! Feeling so heavy and sluggish! H: We can´t travel at this time of the year because it is very expensive but we feel so alone here and don’t know what to do. We were thinking about doing something different this year … maybe inviting few friends to join us.

Let´s read some of your statements … A: Love this time of year; it’s the time when my family gets together. Sometimes we quarrel, but you know… often it’s the wine talking and we say strange thing which are then forgotten … B: The year has passed so quickly it’s hard to believe we are here with lot´s of things only half done! There are so many things I had planned to do! C: I hate this time of year everything is a nightmare! People are getting way to emotional and trying to show their feelings.

50

I: I love this time of year, dressing up and going out. It’s always better than staying at home. I can listen to the music, eat, drink and laugh with my friends. I think I feel better when I celebrate outside than at home but what should I do with my husband? He prefers to stay in and be alone! J: I am in the Christmas play this year … I am so excited! LET´S MAKE AN EXERCISE! Can you guess the age of the ¨letters?”

Your information will be kept in the strictest confidentiality. This time I am not adding the ages on purpose. Put a voice to each statement. Can you see the fact that ¨the older we get, the more problems we have. ¨ The older we get, the less spontaneous we become. We have developed moral conscious. This fact make US act in relation to others... Sometimes we get Lost there, losing Contact with real own Desires and hopes. Here is your present from me this Christmas… follow these steps: 1. Put some nice music on or perhaps choose complete silence 2. Think about yourself doing something you really enjoy 3. Give yourself a present related to that emotion 4. Now share it!!! ... Where is the one or them you want to share it with?

May be you never thought about that person before … or maybe it’s the same person as always and you realize how important they are for you! Either way let them know it! Perhaps there is or are some special people you want to spend your time with but never find the way. Make your ¨Christmas corner”…your “special” Christmas corner, your “special magic” Christmas corner … and let it be different this year! This present can´t be touched but must felt. Can you “feel” this Christmas present? Remember, Christmas isn’t’ a SEASON it’s a FEELING. Have a good one. Cheers, Bea x I would love for you to suggest to me some topics you want to know about. You can ask me any questions, and I will give you my contribution in the form of suggestion, hoping it can help you.

The Winter Boots The teacher was helping one of her pupils put on his boots.

He then announced,'These aren't my boots.' She bit her tongue, rather than get right in his face and scream, 'Why didn't you say so?'

He asked for help and she could see why. Even with her pulling, and him pushing, the little boots still didn't want to go on. By the time they got the second boot on, she had worked up a sweat. She almost cried when the little boy said,

Once again, she struggled to help him pull the ill-fitting boots off his little feet. No sooner had they got the boots off when he said, 'They're my brother's boots. But my Mom made me wear 'em today.' Now she didn't know if she should laugh or cry. But she mustered up what grace and courage she had left to wrestle the boots BACK onto his feet again.

'Teacher, they're on the wrong feet.' She looked, and sure enough, they were. Unfortunately, it wasn't any easier pulling the boots off, than it was putting them on. She managed to keep her cool as, together, they worked to get the boots back on, this time on the correct feet.

Helping him into his coat, she asked,'Now, where are your mittens?' He said,'I stuffed 'em in the toes of my boots...' She'll be eligible for parole in three years.

CYCLING with Bici Gran Alacant

by Olli-Pekka & James Fulcher

Bici Gran Alacant is a group for all road bike cyclists in and around Gran Alacant.

Loops around Santa Ana / Rebolledo / Torrellano / El Altet “All the routes are downhill and with a nice tailwind! (except the bits with climbing and a headwind).” Remember to always take a sense of humour... I really like doing the longer rides but sometimes it is good to do a shorter easy ride just for coffee. Santa Pola is always a nice option with seaside cafes. For change of scenery you can have the coffee in Rebolledo or El Altet or Torrellano. El Rebolledo has couple of options for coffee. Los Granadinos is most frequently visited by our group. Torrellano has La Magdalena with great cakes, pastries and ice cream. El Altet has many choices but La Confeteria is definitely worth a mention. Targets acquired! El Rebolledo is furthest of these villages or towns. If you do a nice loop you will ride through the beautiful scenery of Santa Ana. It is one of my favourite views and even without the coffee stop on El Rebolledo or Torrellano worth the ride on its own. The easy way to navigate to Santa Ana is

54

to head out towards Valverde and take the road Torres de Gaitan all the way to to Calle Partida where you turn left towards Elche. After a kilometre take a right turn to the overpass of the railway and join the N-340 to the right until the first roundabout. From the roundabout take the 3rd exit which takes you to Parque Industrial. Ride through the Parque Industrial and straight over the CV-86, And you have reached the Camino de Salades. There are quite a few trails on the both sides of the Salades road, so if you have a mountain bike don’t be prisoner of the road. Follow the Camino Salades all the way up for 3,6km. From the top you can see hills like Fontcalent. After you have taken in the view you start the decent. After about 1km you see a junction with a traffic island. At that junction take a hard right to Calle Sierra Ventos, be a little careful here as it is a tight right hander. Then enjoy the rollercoaster for the next few kms. Once you reach the main road through El Rebolledo (Paseo Mayor) you turn left which takes you to El Rebolledo, Los Granadinos is on the right about 50m from the junction, even though El Rebolledo is tiny I think there are around 5 cafes to choose from. After coffee you have two options, retrace your route or return to Torrellano via

This leads you on to Cami Salades Torrellano and you’re on your way home. https://www.strava.com/ activities/1949640883 Nice short loop 22km to El Altet could be up to Calle Cullen from Road Balsares to Valverde. Few things to keep in mind: • Always have something to drink with you and for a bit longer rides maybe a banana or muesli-bar • Always have a little money if you need to stop to buy food or drink • Take the phone with you • Many of the small cafés are closed on Mondays • And the most important: Wave the fellow cyclists” Until Next month...

DRAMA IN A TEACUP The sound of the sirens was growing louder. Please let them arrive soon he thought. He was trapped in the front seat of his car and only the occasional glimmer of moonlight enabled him to see his surroundings His head was still spinning from the events that led to his current predicament and his brief spell of unconsciousness was perhaps a blessing. The fuel tank had been showing in the red, when he had stopped his car briefly, at a café to ask directions to the nearest petrol station. “Just a few miles to the west along the main road” the attendant had said. He set off at a steady pace, although, the twists and turns of the road meant he could not speed along as he usually would. As he had approached a well signposted sharp bend, the other car suddenly appeared on his side of the road. There was no time to consider options or even to apply the brakes. He simply turned the wheel and his car immediately left the road. The steep bank was thick with bushes that slowed his decent but not enough to lessen the impact with the tree. “It’s not the speed but the sudden stop that hurts” was his last thought before the blackout. As he came round, he felt no pain. His vision was blurred and the darkness seemed to consume everything but he was able to move his arms and hands to reach the seat belt release. It was jammed. A brief moment of panic was overtaken by the elation that he was at least alive although he could not seem to move his right foot. He was slightly comforted by the lack of a smell of fuel but the lights were not working although he could see enough by now to notice the Air Bag had deployed. The noise of the sirens was louder now and they seemed to have stopped moving. They must have arrived at the area where he had driven off the road and he was relived to think that they would be with him soon, because his right leg had begun to

hurt. That was a good thing though. Pain meant that it was still attached at least and now some feeling was returning to his right foot. Trapped but not disabled. They were taking their time; surely they could see the marks he had left on the road or the disturbance to the undergrowth where he had gone off. Then he remembered he had not used the brakes. Everything was still fuzzy. Maybe the other car had crashed. He had no time to look in his mirrors to see what might have happened. That was it. They were dealing with the occupants of the other car first because they must be seriously hurt. Then, almost complete silence. The sirens had been switched off. Muffled voices from the road, raised but not shouting. The emergency services were always calm in a crisis. They would be forming a search plan. Doors slamming now and the sound of engines starting. The vehicles were moving off and there was no longer the sound of voices, muffled or otherwise and once again he felt alone and engulfed in the darkness. He tried again to switch on the lights but they were, of course already switched to “on”. The concussion was gradually becoming less of a burden and his vision was improving enough to see a tiny glimmer of light from the radio. Although the signal was weak, the radio was, miraculously, still working. He had tuned to a local station before leaving the café and the evening news broadcast was starting. He reached over to turn up the volume so as to overcome the ringing in his ears but the first message brought back the panic. “Two people were killed in what is believed to have been a hit and run incident tonight. Police are anxious to locate a red saloon car which was seen traveling west in the direction of the accident site. The vehicle was known to be low on fuel and road blocks have been set up. Anyone with information should contact the local police “. to be continued ...

Now the summer is behind us we enter into a period of local sporting events, and in our area we are fortunate to have one of the country’s best half marathon’s, attracting competitors from across Spain and other parts of Europe. The Santa Pola Half Marathon is to be held on Sunday 20th January 2019, starting at 10.30am with a field of approximately 9000 runners of all levels of ability. This is one of Santa Pola’s biggest events, with 1000’s of spectators lining the route adding to the carnival atmosphere of the day. The town throbs with excitement. For those interested in participating, the registration opened in July, closing on 17/01/2019. Registration is through the website www.rockthesport.com or, you can search on google for Santa Pola Half Marathon 2019. By the time this goes to press there will be 11 -12 weeks to the date of the half marathon, which is about the minimum you would need to put together a training programme. There are any number of 12 week training programmes available on the internet, starting with regular walks and leading up to gentle jogs to get you ready for the 21km run. Winning is not the goal, participating and completing

70

the course is reward enough, giving you a sense of achievement and self satisfaction Gran Alacant is developing a sporting culture with cycling, running, surfing, kite surfing, paragliding, kayaking, swimming, Triathlons, Biathlons, walking football and much more and it is encouraging to see the growing numbers of locals taking part in exercise. WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge

TÖNN – A CHRISTMAS STORY

Once upon a time, in a land far away, there was a big tree, and in this tree there was a big nest, and the big nest contained a big egg. Now the parents of this big egg were very special birds, because there aren't many of them about, so the people of the land far away decided that this was a special egg and that they should keep their eyes on it.

So when the egg hatched, as they often do, it was discovered that the egg contained a male bird, and they named him Tönn. They decided that since Tönn was a rare bird, they should keep track of where he went, so that he and others like him could be protected. So the clever scientists of the land far away fitted him with a special gizmo which would tell them where he was at all times. When the weather in the land far away turned cold, the young Tönn flew southwards towards warmer climes, and after many miles of travelling he found a nice swampy place where there was plenty of food, and he passed the winter there. Eventually, as the days grew warmer and the days became longer, the call of his birthplace grew strong, and he returned to the place where he had been born.

76 76

And the interesting thing is that every year, Tönn undertook exactly the same return journeys to the same places. Eventually, Tönn found a partner and they built their own nest in the land far away, and brought up a new generation so that this species of rare bird would continue to flourish. We know all this due to the special gizmo fitted to Tönn's back. You can see it here, in my photograph of him, just behind his head. Tönn is a Greater Spotted Eagle, who was born in Estonia in 2008, and every year since then has wintered here in Spain at the big El Hondo reserve near Elche. His satellite tracker has enabled conservationists to observe his movements on a daily basis, and two years ago the Estonian ornithologists found his nest from the satellite tracks and installed a camera at his nesting site which you can see online – it's off at the moment, but if as expected Tönn and his partner use the same nest again next year, you will be able to observe all the comings and goings of his breeding season. Tönn is one of the most famous birds on the internet, with an army of fans in Spain, France, Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia closely following his travels as he flies over these countries. We are very lucky that he has chosen our area for his winter quarters, and if you are out and about at El Hondo, watch for the graceful shape of a large dark eagle swooping and soaring over the reedbeds. He will be here until about the middle of March, when he will commence his long journey back to the land of his birth. A Merry Christmas to all my readers! Out & About with Star & Ashlee Van Gogh Alive the experience Hi my name is Star and I have been lucky enough to call Gran Alacant my home for over 10 years now. My 8 year old daughter Ashlee and I are often “Out & About” enjoying the local attractions and culture in this part of Spain. Over the next few months I will be sharing some of our experiences with you to encourage you to go “Out & About” yourselves and maybe learn a little bit about this beautiful place we call home. This month we want to encourage you to visit the “Van Gogh Alive the experience” exhibition in Alicante. It is in the Exhibition Centre (Lonja del Pescado) not far from the bus station and will be running until the 16th December so you have time to go and see it before it moves on. It is open from 10:00 until 22:00 Tuesdays to Saturdays, from 10:00 to 19:00 on Sundays and is closed on Mondays. Prices are €14 for adults, €12 for seniors, €9 for children 4 - 15 and under 4 are free. You can also buy Family Packs which reduce the entrance fee so it only cost us €21 using the 1 adult/1 child family pack.

limit to tickets and entrances so it might be worth contacting them in advance if a group of you want to go. We retraced our steps and had a fruit juice at a nearby cafe whilst talking about how excited we were to see what else was inside.

When we arrived at around 13:30 on a Saturday, we were instantly thrown into the world of Van Gogh with quotes on the walls, a life size 3D replica of his “Bedroom in Arles” painting and a larger than life statue of a right ear. There was a sign on the cash desk to say that there were no tickets left for 13:00 so we pre-purchased tickets for 14:00. I didn´t realise that there was a

After returning just before 14:00 we went straight in and were surrounded by the life and works of Vincent Willem van Gogh. There were large information boards that described in both Spanish and English, the history of van Gogh and the different styles of his artwork that were heavily influenced by his short journey through life and the changing stages of his mental health.

Out & About with Star & Ashlee CARABASSI CENTRE

We came to an area where there were drink and snack machines, a shop selling numerous items, such as mugs, notebooks, t-shirts and bags that feature his more famous artworks, toilets and an area where kids can sit and create their own little pieces of art that are subsequently displayed on the walls. It was then that we noticed a doorway with some heavy black curtains covering it.

We quietly opened them and were instantly drawn into a dark space that was filled with giant screens including one on the floor and noticed lots of bean bags and chairs below them. We spotted a great location where we could see the most screens and got comfy. After a little while music started to play and suddenly the screens were filled with the landscapes, portraits, paintings, letters and changing locations that Vincent van Gogh produced and experienced during his life. It was truly amazing to see the history of this famous artist literally flash before your eyes. I am not actually sure how long it lasted as we were lying there opened mouthed, engulfed in everything Van Gogh. The music was amazing and helped to envoke a range of emotions as we were taken on a totally immersive journey through the pleasures and torments that the artist experienced in his life.

Once it had finished, we felt completely inspired and in an adjoining room we spotted some easels all set up with paper and freshly sharpened pencils. There were 2 screens that showed you how to draw a human body, a face and a landscape and Ashlee and I spent quite a while trying to perfect our skills. It was a great way to end the day and we got to bring home an extra reminder of the exhibition. We thoroughly recommend this new style of exhibition, even if you are not a huge fan, you will learn something about the dramatic life and times of Vincent van Gogh and see art in a whole new way.

Did you know that in a 10 year period Vincent van Gogh produced over 2,000 works of art including paintings, drawings and sketches? Unfortunately for him, the millions that his artwork is sold for today was something he could never have imagined as he only sold 1 painting in his lifetime for approximately ÂŁ1,480 / â‚Ź1,660 in 1890. Have a great Christmas Until next time Star and Ashlee xxx

GRAN ALACANT GOLF SOCIETY One of the benefits of living on the Costa Blanca is year round golf. Although winter is now upon us we still are able to play the full course – we do not have winter tees (or mats) and we still play to normal greens (no temporaries). On occasion, and perhaps surprisingly to some, we can get a morning frost. However this not an extended period of deep seated ground frost as experienced in the UK. Rather it is a strange phenonomen which occasionally occurs ( probably more in January or February ) at sunrise. At that time the air temperature drops quite dramatically causing a fine frost purely on the top layer of grass. As our Society is usually first away this can delay our start for up to an hour and half. When the sun gets higher in the sky and produces heat the starter opens the course and away we go to enjoy another round of golf in the sunshine. Seasonal greetings to all who have joined us during 2018 and GAGS members hope everyone has an enjoyable Christmas. As always new members and/or guests are always welcome, whether a full time resident, someone with your own holiday home for regular visits throughout the year or a holiday maker in the region. We would love to see you. For more information please contact either Barry C (686180585) or Barry D (966183018).

CHRISTMAS PRESENTS FOR PETS Written and translated by Marina Reina Aldeguer

Christmas is getting closer and you sure have in mind all of your dear ones and probably you are also thinking about which could be their Christmas present. But don´t forget about your furry friends that have been lovely the whole year and they deserve something special too! This month we´ve come with two presents that you can give to your pets that cost near to nothing and are ecologic.

3. Then, pick a stick large enough to reach both of the vertical pieces and place it between them to create a square-like structure and attach them to the pieces with the bottles already passed through the stick. 4. And we´re done! If your pet hits the bottle with enough strength, it will hang upside down and food will pour from it, making it a great way to exercise. But we haven´t forgotten about dogs! We found a recipe for dog cookies that are also edible for humans if you want to share this bite with your furry friend. Note that only healthy dogs can eat these so be sure to ask your vet before giving them these cookies. First, the ingredients are: 3 almond flour, ¼ cup of pumpkin puree, 2 eggs and 3tbsp of peanut butter.

First of all, for those cat owners, we all know that cats may be super lazy or super active. With the idea that we propose to you, you´ll make your cat take a bit of exercise while it is being rewarded with food. In order to make this toy, you´ll need some strong cardboard boxes or even wood, small plastic bottles, scissors, glue, a stick and your pet´s food. 1. First, you need to cut two pieces of cardboard or wood about 20x10 cm and attach them to another piece that will serve as a base with the length that you desire depending on how many bottles do you want to use. The structure should have a “U” shape but with a flat base. 2. Secondly, you´ll need two or three small plastic bottles that we´ll fill with your pet´s food about half their capacity in order to not to be very heavy. Then, make two little holes at both sides of the bottle to get them through the stick. Remember not to seal the bottle –the food should be able to fall if the bottle is held upside-down.

88

1.Add 3 cups of almond flour into a large mixing bowl 2.Add ¼ cup of pumpkin puree and 3 tbsp. of peanut butter 3.Crack 2 eggs into the mixture 4.Whisk ingredients together until the mixture stops being sticky 5.Roll out dough to desired thickness and cut it into whatever shape you like 6. Bake at 350Fº for 25 minutes and let cool before serving And this is all! You can try making this presents for your pets and giving them for Christmas, after all, they sure have been nice all the year!
