Gran Alacant Advertiser continues to bring you all the local NEWS including information from the local Town Hall representative. Working for the local community since May 2005. If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please email on granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.com Q: BREXIT Hi Lou & Ged So, the first anniversary of Brexit has passed. The only differences I have seen are the plummeting exchange rate resulting in around a 15% reduction in pensions for us expats, and extra import charges for deliveries from the UK. Where are all the benefits we were promised? If anyone can show me how our lives have improved by Brexit, I would love to hear from them. Alternatively send your answers on a postcard to Boris 'party animal' Johnson, c/o 10 Downing Street. POST OFFICE REFORM WORKS Plans to improve the facilities and Post Office Services are in place following numerous complaints received from both the neighbourhood association and private citizens. The photo shows the new pathway to the rear of the Post Office building.
OTHER NEWS Spain makes pets legal family members A new law came into effect in Spain on 5th January whereby pets in the country will be recognised as living and sentient beings and not as mere objects. Now, at the time of divorce or separation, besides considering family needs, animal's welfare will be an important factor to be discussed by the family court when deciding who looks after the dog, cat, goldfish, turtle or bird.

EFFECTS OF TOBACCO ON HEALTH
Smoking is an addiction and nicotine is an addictive substance. Each cigarette supplies between 1 and 2 mg of nicotine. This reaches the brain in about 10 seconds, which contributes to its great addictive power. Tobacco consumption generates three forms of dependence: • Physical: directly caused by nicotine, responsible for the withdrawal syndrome. • Psychological: smoking is associated with different everyday situations and it seems impossible to change this relationship. • Social: For many people, smoking remains a social imperative.
HEART DISEASE • Tobacco use is responsible for 10 to 12% of deaths from cardiovascular disease worldwide. Which are the main cause of death in our environment . • The damage begins to occur from the first cigarette and is greater the more years and more cigarettes are smoked. In addition, smoking a few cigarettes a day also increases the risk of cardiovascular disease: there is no safe level of exposure to tobacco smoke below which cardiovascular risk is not increased. The effects on cardiovascular health are also the first to disappear after quitting smoking. Smoking just one (1) cigarette a day increases the risk of heart attack by 50% and stroke by 30%, with no difference between the sexes.
The effects of tobacco use on the cardiovascular system include: Coronary heart disease (acute myocardial infarction, ischemic heart disease, angina, and sudden death). stroke, peripheral vascular disease, abdominal aortic aneurysm, congestive heart failure, sudden death Cancer More than 70 substances in tobacco smoke have been identified as causing cancer. Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of cancer worldwide. It is a risk factor in 14 types of cancer. Globally, it is responsible for 20% of cancer deaths and 70% of lung cancer deaths. In women, one in ten tumors corresponds to lung cancer and the mortality rate from this cancer has doubled worldwide in the last 15 years, surpassing breast cancer in several countries. More than 70 substances in tobacco smoke have been identified as causing cancer. Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of cancer worldwide. It is a risk factor in 14 types of cancer. Globally, it is responsible for 20% of cancer deaths and 70% of lung cancer deaths. In addition to lung cancer, tobacco use increases the risk of cancer of the bronchi, colon and rectum, esophagus, stomach, liver, larynx, oropharynx (throat, tongue, palate, tonsils), pancreas, skin, kidneys and ureter, blood (acute myeloid leukemia), trachea and bladder.

SKIN DAMAGE • The skin: suffers the consequences of smoking, not only with serious diseases such as cancer. Smoking causes premature aging of the skin, which is more evident in women. • Teeth: Stains on the teeth, Cavities, Bad breath, Periodontal disease: progressive disease that causes tooth loss. Whitish spots that do not come off when scraping, Cancer of the oral cavity. DIABETES Tobacco use is a risk factor for type 2 diabetes. Beth worked as a Qualified Librarian in Aberdeen for 20 years. She loves reading and delights in finding exciting new authors as well as reverting back to favourite writers of all genres. Beth has lived in Gran Alacant for the last 15 years.
As always, Jack Reacher has no particular place to go, and all the time in the world to get there. One morning he ends up in a small town in Tennessee. He plans to grab a cup of coffee and move right along. The town has been shut down by a cyber attack. At the centre of it all, whether he likes it or not, is the town’s former IT manager Rusty Rutherford. As the bad guys move in on Rusty, Reacher moves in on them. Published in 2020 this is the 25th Jack Reacher and the first written by Lee Child with his brother Andrew Child. A thoroughly entertaining thriller.

COVID 19, 20, 21 ... Well here we go again. When I and my wife caught it in November 2020, we knew nobody who had caught it. Now it’s a case of we struggle to think of who has not caught it. Vaccination continues to be the key. Yes it doesn’t make you 100% immune. Those with weak defenses, like the elderly or those with serious underlying conditions will not be as secure as the rest, but the chances now of vaccinated people taking up hospital beds that are needed by those who cannot avoid being ill is less and less. That therefore leads to the conclusion again, that if you are not vaccinated DO IT. You are in danger not only of being seriously ill yourself, but maybe more importantly given you choose not to vaccinate, occupy beds of those who really need it. People may die because of your choice. Happily though it seems the vaccinated suffer little more than a dose of Flu. The number of people with it should massively increase the numbers with antibodies which combined with vaccine, may at last see the end to this whole sorry affair. Maybe finally COVID can be consigned to history. COVID had something of an effect over our Xmas. Monika and I had the responsibility to care for my elderly father over Xmas. We ended up spending a lot of the time dodging COVID as both our daughters went down with it within a 24-hour period. Luckily, we were still able to care for my Dad. To have left him on his own again was not something we were prepared to contemplate. In an 18-day trip between here, the UK and Slovakia, we ended up sleeping in 9 different beds to keep ahead of it all. Nice to be home.
I do find us Brits entertaining. At Alicante airport are all the warnings about social distancing etc. As soon as the flight gate is called, we queue for the flight a foot apart. As someone who flies to the UK frequently on business I am yet to see anyone not get their seat! It seems we are programmed to queue. Whenever I fly to a destination with no Brits on the flight, nobody queues. People sit around until they announce we can board. SO much more relaxing. Heard the expression “Ultima?” in the Bank? Just the Spanish way of finding out who’s last in an imaginary queue. I think we should adopt the Non-Brit way. It’s a lot less stressful. Gran Alacant is quiet at the moment. A lot of places close during January to give the staff time to recuperate. But the weather is still lovely when you can find a nice, sheltered spot. It is one of the reasons I live here. Anywhere can have hot days in the Summer, but few places avoid the darkness of winter like here. Our new Hotel thrives, so pop over, maybe for a long weekend. Recharge those depleted batteries. As I write COVID testing on re entry is simple and inexpensive. The document needed to be completed to obtain a QR code to gain entry to Spain is easy to complete and can be found at :www.spth.gob.es/create Have you visited Urbanova? It’s a 10-minute drive from Gran Alacant where restaurants line the sea front, where you can enjoy a drink or lunch is a spot that would be difficult to better and does not have Marbella prices! Try it. It’s a beautiful winter spot. Its been a tough couple of years, but the good times will return. Remember the only difference between an optimist and a pessimist is the optimist has a far better time.

History of Arenales del Sol Hotel by Jan Wright Dear Lou & Ged, Since I moved here 17 years ago, the Hotel in Arenales del Sol has been a topic of conversation among residents and local news reports as it increasingly fell into a state of disrepair. I went online to find out its history and see pictures of it in its heyday. I would like to share these photos and a little bit of its history so that you and your readers can see how beautiful and luxurious it once was, in fact it was the first of its kind and was considered to be the best along the whole coast of Europe! It was built by Thomas Dura in 1960 and there was nothing else around it but sand and sea. He bought the site for 200,000 pesetas and the hotel opened its doors for the first time in 1963. It was open all year round and each of its 146 rooms was equipped with a telephone, bathroom, air conditioning and radio. The hotel boasted magnificent terraces, marble floors and glass walls. It also had many sports facilities, a beautiful swimming pool and its restaurant served international food. Over the years, the surrounding area started to change as a large number of apartment blocks for permanent living and holiday makers
started being built. Sadly, due to a lack of finances, the upkeep of the hotel became harder and harder to maintain and in 1979 it closed. Vandals started to deface the now abandoned building which was also used for drug trafficking, so it was cordoned off to the public.
In 2017, to everybody´s delight, renovation works started to take place. Princesol had all the necessary permits for a 4* hotel, however, their reconstruction works were short lived as Elche Council said that a part of their construction was not approved and needed to be demolished. Work on the site promptly stopped and sadly over the following years an agreement could not be reached. The case went to the Superior Court of Justice for the Valencian Community who decided that the 11 million euro project was “legally unfeasible”. The first phase of the demolition happened in 2020 and involved the removal of 1,000 kilos of asbestos. The second phase of demolition started in October 2021 and lasted three weeks. Just like that, this once beautiful hotel has now completely disappeared.
Que lastima!

The Lowedownwith Lynne INTERVIEW
with Rosemary Walker Hi, my name is Lynne and I have been lucky to call Gran Alacant home for the last 5 years. People fascinate me and I love to hear about their adventures and life stories. Over the next few months, I will be sharing some interview with GA’s very own Superstars! WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO GA? “We bought a holiday home here and enjoyed the weather and pace of life. Each time we visited, it got harder and harder to go back to Cambridge in England. Eventually my husband stopped working due to ill health at 58 and I decided at 61 I wanted to retire early so we moved here.” WORKING LIFE Rosemary joined Acorn Computers, a small start-up company as a telephonist. At that time, she was in her 40’s, the oldest in the company, working alongside a handful of young technicians. Acorn Computers Ltd. was a British computer company established in Cambridge, England, in 1978. The company produced a number of computers, which were especially popular in the UK. Acorn's BBC Micro computer dominated the UK educational computer market during the 1980s. Acorn is sometimes referred to as the "British Apple". Many British IT professionals gained their early experiences on Acorns, which were often more technically advanced than commercially successful US hardware. Rosemary said, “I worked on the switchboard dealing with complaints. After a week of calls from customers who had paid for goods that they had not received, I walked into the Managing Director’s office and told him, ‘If I was one of your customers, I’d take you to court!’” Shortly afterwards Rosemary was given her new role as Progress Chaser. Rosemary’s role
expanded and evolved to accommodate various schemes and initiatives the company was involved in. Rosemary started as a telephonist and ended up running the company administration as Admin Manager and Spares Co-ordinator. DID YOU ENJOY YOUR WORK? “Yes, I loved it. After I had my sons Stephen and Chris, I felt I lost my identity a little. When I went back to work, I felt like I found myself again. Work gave me a buzz and a new lease on life, but I had to learn to toughen up very quickly otherwise everything would be dumped on my desk.” DO YOU THINK YOU HAD A GOOD WORK/LIFE BALANCE? “I think I missed precious family time, especially in the later years. The Financial Director told me I was working too many hours so the company bought me a computer so I could work from home. Looking back, I would not have put that
THE LOWEDOWN WITH LYNNE
much time and energy into my work and away from my family. However, I do feel very lucky, I did have the BEST working life, and I never thought, ‘I don’t want to go to work today’. I gave everything 100% and I enjoyed the challenge.”
Rosemary recounts a story when she asked her eldest son to clean his bedroom. When he told her that was “women’s work” Rosemary went on strike for 3 months and made her rebellious teenager do his own cooking, cleaning and laundry.
Rosemary recounts a funny story at work when a Senior Manager patted her bottom in front of his male counterparts. Rosemary simply turned round and said, “I hope that did more for you than it did for me.” Much to the delight of all the other sniggering men.
WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME? “I like to do things that challenge me.” Rosemary showed me her hand embroidery and needle lace work. I am amazed by how beautifully intricate they are. The time and effort that goes into making each little piece. Some work takes months and even years to complete.
FAMILY LIFE Rosemary’s husband Geoff suffered from severe bronchial asthma. He was told he would be on oxygen for the rest of his life and would be lucky to see his 30th birthday. He was then put on steroids, a new drug in the 60’s, which dramatically increased his lifespan but also brought a few challenging side effects. Rosemary and Geoff were happily married for 56 years. Geoff sadly passed away in 2019. When I asked Rosemary how she managed working in a male dominated workplace then coming home to a male dominated household, she replied, “My Geoff was great, we worked really well as a team.”
Rosemary also enjoys challenging her brain at Skipper pub quiz and challenging her body at BeatCamp at Bernar’s Place. WHAT ARE YOU GRATEFUL FOR? I count myself very lucky. I had a wonderful marriage to a lovely man, I had a challenging job that I loved and I have two great sons.
Thank you so much Rosemary for sharing your story with us. What a formidable & inspiring woman you are!

‘MIGUEL HERNÁNDEZ: GREAT POET, LOCAL HERO’ follow the trail of this local hero which led us to his birthplace in the beautiful and historic city of Orihuela.
The habit of re-naming airports after famous people has grown in recent years. Occasionally the airport does become known by the name of the illustrious personage thus honored; most famously New York International Airport has ceased entirely to be known as New York or Idlewild Airport and is now globally known simply as “JFK” in honour of President John F. Kennedy. Mostly however airports remain known by their previous geographical names with the honorific memorial clumsily bolted on as an infrequently used afterthought, examples of this are Liverpool John Lennon Airport and most clumsily the Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport. One wonders how many of the millions of passengers who pass through our local airport every year even notice that its correct full name is “Aeropuerto Internacional de AlicanteElche Miguel Hernández”. It is likely that even fewer passengers actually know who Miguel Hernández was. We decided to
Hernández was born in 1910 into a modest family in Orihuela. He received a limited education and went to work at a young age. Despite these disadvantages he set about educating himself and became well read in both classical and modern Spanish literature. He developed considerable skills as a poet and writer, his work being recognised for its combining of fresh contemporary imagery and concepts with more traditional Spanish rhythms and rhymes. His work was published and became well known in the turbulent 1930s. He joined the Communist Party and at the outbreak of the civil war in 1936 he enlisted to fight against the military coup led by General Franco. Hernández saw action in the Battle of Teruel as well as supporting the Republican cause by addressing soldiers and writing poetry supporting the legitimate government. In so doing he became a prominent figure in the struggle against Franco. At the end of the civil war Hernández was unable to escape Spain and was arrested and put on trial by the Francoist regime. His alleged “crimes” included having written poetry attacking the Francoist coup. He was initially sentenced to death but this was changed to a sentence of 30 years imprisonment, apparently due to Franco
HOME TURF CARABASSI CENTRE
fearing that the political execution of artists and poets gave his regime a poor overseas reputation following the execution of Federico García Lorca. Hernández however did not survive long, he contracted a number of illnesses in prison and died of typhus and tuberculosis in Alicante prison in 1942. During his imprisonment Hernández had continued to write poetry and verse, often in the form of songs. He left behind his wife, Josefina and a surviving son; Josefina lived until 1987. His work offers an insight into the suffering of Spain and its people especially during and immediately after the civil war. His modest birthplace is preserved in his home city of Orihuela and we visited it on a wet and blustery day. The beautifully preserved little house and garden is not just a monument to Hernandez but also a fascinating time capsule of early twentieth century Spanish domestic life and well worth a visit.
The city of Orihuela is a worthy destination in its own right. It is the seat of the local bishop and as such contains a cathedral and numerous magnificent historical buildings. The centre of the old town contains beautiful streets lined with little shops and cafes and winding through the middle of the city is the River Segura. A historical trail can be followed through the old city taking in all of the sights including monastic buildings, church hospitals, noble palaces and Miguel Hernandez’s birthplace museum; a map can be obtained from the tourist information office near the cathedral. It is also possible to walk along the river’s edge and to cross into the magnificent squares of the more modern part of the city where one can find an area dedicated to tapas bars and restaurants.
Orihuela has one last surprise; the working class barrio of San Isidro on the outskirts of the city has become an open air public gallery for graffiti art, often with a social or political message. At the end of our visit we walked up the hill into “Ruta de Murales de San Isidro” and wandered around the streets where every wall is covered with magnificent street art. And yes, the face of Miguel Hernandez, poet and soldier stares out from the walls of his home city.

CHIFFCHAFF
So you’re lying in your bedroom at night after a fine evening out in GA, all’s well with the world and you’re planning what to do tomorrow when you suddenly hear that high-pitched buzz-saw sound and you know you’ve got a very unwelcome intruder in there with you, who’s going to leave you with nasty itchy lumpy bumps in the morning. You wonder just how much you’ve spent on combating the mosquito – there’s the screens, the sprays, the electric lamps, the candles, the ointments – the list goes on and on and you haven’t even begun to calculate how much the local government spends on your behalf out of your taxes. They can’t just wallop mosquitoes with broad spectrum insecticide, as they have to be careful not to damage other, more beneficial insects like Bees and other wildlife. You’ve even begun eating marmite because an aunt of a friend’s brother’s wife says that it keeps them away, and you hate marmite. Well here’s a natural ally in the never-ending battle, the Mosquitero Común, known as the Chiffchaff in Britain. The English name comes from its song, but that’s the big difficulty in identifying this little bird over
78 78
here – it hardly sings at all when it’s in Spain, and even experts are sometimes hard-put to differentiate it from the very similar Willow Warbler, which passes through Spain on migration to warmer African climes in some numbers. In fact it’s very unobtrusive unless you look for it, but when you start seeing them you will realise that they are all over the place. Listen out for a quiet “Hweet” call repeated at 2-3 second intervals, they are very common in the Clot but fairly unobtrusive. The figures for Chiffchaffs are quite astounding – during the winter anything between five and ten million Chiffchaffs move south from Northern Europe to Spain, and since each Chiffchaff has been estimated to require about one-third of its weight in insects daily, that’s a lot of mozzies being gulped down. You’ll see Chiffchaffs everywhere for the next few months – look for busy little olivebrown birds with light-coloured underparts working their way through the bushes. So busy are they, in fact, that if you stay quite still they will come fairly close to you. They have their own enemies – hawks and falcons will take them unawares quite easily, but as there are millions of them around a few casualties will hardly be noticed. They will stay here until April, when they move northwards again en masse and in Britain they are one of the first heralds of Spring with their distinctive “chiff-chaff” call. A few stay in the UK over winter, but just be thankful that so many come to Spain to polish off as many mosquitoes as they can. You can see more photographs of birds and other animals from our area by visiting www.marketheridge.smugmug.com See you next month.

NEW LEGAL STATUS OF ANIMALS IN SPAIN Since Jan 2022, there is a new regulation in Spain which recognizes animals are no longer (legally speaking) objects but sentient living beings. This new law is NOT
Liliana Aldeguer Cerdán 793 English translation by Sergio Reina Esteban col 747
Grooming Service Available Thanks to this new law, Spain reaches the level of other EU countries in animal protection. In case of Animal Welfare Law, we remind you once again that nowadays there is nothing definitive about it, since its legal process is still at the first stages. Anyway, just like so many other things in these days, there are some hoaxes about it, and one of them, which has become very popular these last weeks, is the animal DNI. Spanish Veterinary Colleges Association has asked Spanish Ministry about the matter, and the answer has been: NO animal DNI, and, of course, NO €50 to pay for it. Just another hoax.
the Animal Welfare Law, which is still at its first stages and it won’t be approved till next year. This new status of the animals affects other Spanish legal facts such as mortgages, divorces and heritages. What is new in this law? From this moment, companion pets but also livestock are legally protected in case of divorces, decease of the owner or farmer, and embargoes. For example, if I lose my country house because I stopped paying the mortgage, the bank may no longer take my animals, because they are no longer “a part of the house”. In case of divorces, the family pets, same as the children, will have visiting arrangements that will depend on their circumstances and welfare.

Of course, microchip will continue being mandatory (this is European, not Spanish regulation) for every dog, which includes from potentially dangerous breeds to “those small dogs which never go out”. No exceptions. If you hear about any kind of exception, there you have another hoax. Remember in this area, apart from microchip, rabies and annual tapeworm treatments are also mandatory (for dogs, cats and ferrets). Apart from this, Town Halls usually require to register all the dogs which live at the town. Every Town Hall has its own rules, which can normally be found at their websites. Of course, if we move to another town with our dog, we must re-register it. This is important at Costa Blanca, since many urbanizations belong to 2 or more Town Halls. For any kind of extra info, just ask your Vet.

GA RUNNING GROUP
THE (CONTINUING) ADVENTURES OF THE GRAN ALACANT RUNNERS
On 23rd January Santa Pola hosted the 30th International Half Marathon (21km), starting from the harbour front on Avda Fernando Perez Ojeda and attracting 7055 entrants (5599 men and 1456 women).
The festivities started on Friday 21st January with the “Runners village” opening in the castle where participants could collect their race numbers, commemorative T shirt, register for other local events and maybe purchase some sports goods.
Playa Varadero and La Cadena before heading back into Santa Pola. Gran Alacant Runners had two participants, Jan, who flew in from Manchester to take part in her first Santa Pola 21k and Rob who lives in Gran Alacant and a veteran of many Santa Pola 21k’s.
Live music was provided by Lord Byron and the Ambassadors from 21.00 on the harbour front. Black Night Rock started the Saturday festivities with a live concert at noon, also on the harbour front, followed by Inflatables and a mini marathon for the kiddies at 16.30 and rounded off at 17:30 with music from the Skol Rock Band. Race day itself saw the runners and spectators arriving early to get a good parking space before congregating around Santa Pola but mainly in the cafes around the Glorieta and the start line. Although it was raining spirits were not dampened. It is always a spectacle to see the many athletics teams from across the Province, resplendent in their club colours, excitedly posing for photographs around the castle, before the reality of the next 21km of running hits home. This year to comply with local Covid regulations it was mandatory to wear a face mask at the mass start of the race, which, with 7000+ competitors closely packed into a small space, was not unreasonable. However these could be removed after the first half kilometre but had to be worn again at the finishing enclosure before exiting onto the streets again. At 10:00 race day there was a parachute display team and exhibition over the start line with the parachutists landing on Levante beach. The race started at 10:30 with 7000 expectant runners heading south out of Santa Pola, only to turn back into the town centre via Playa Lisa before heading to
The race was won in 59 mins: 33 Secs by Kenyan Felix Kibitok with Pauline Narogoi also from Kenya finishing 16th overall and winning the womens race in 67 mins: 15 Secs. Rob was placed 2978th overall and 2667th in the mens category with Jan finishing 4532nd overall and 815th in the womens category. As always many congratulations to the runners, organisers, sponsors and spectators for making this a special day, which, despite the rain, was highly enjoyable. No matter what your ability, If you are visiting the area and want to run with someone, please get in touch.
