Gran Alacant Advertiser continues to bring you all the local NEWS including information from the local Town Hall representative. Working for the local community since May 2005. If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please email on granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.com Q: Bins Hola, Lou & Ged I hope all is well with you I know from reading the magazine you often speak with Oscar our councillor. Could you please ask him to speak to Urbaser about our bins situated on Carrabassi 9 outside Mediterranio 3. I have sent messages on the Facebook chat 3 times in October about the general rubbish one only partial working and people not putting rubbish in it. I have just returned from a few days away and now the general rubbish one is broken completely and the yellow bin for plastic is broken and jammed open. Thank you Patrick Answer by GA Councillor Oscar Valenzuela: Many thanks for your question regarding the state of the bins on Carrabassi 9 outside Mediterranio 3. I will explain the issues you have raised to Urbaser and make sure that this issue is resolved as quickly as possible. LATEST NEWS FROM THE GA COUNCILLOR OSCAR VALENZUELA
Improvements to the N332 On the 28th October we were informed that the Ministry has bid for improvements to be made to the integration of traffic onto the N332 when travelling from Gran Alacant to Santa Pola. As residents are fully aware this area is one of the many black spots along this stretch of the N332, which is made even more dangerous as the turning onto the CV 851 towards Balsares is so close to the junction. I would like to thank the political groups, neighbourhood associations and the work of the government team who have all been
unrelenting in their constant requests for improvements to be made to ensure that the neighbourhood and municipality become more accessible and safer for everyone. Improvement to Health Service As previously mentioned, we had the agreement of all political groups to continue to make requests to the Council for a substantial improvement to the Health Resources that are available in Gran Alacant, including the provision of an ambulance. In previous meetings with health officials and various agencies we have explained that the numbers of the real population and needs of the municipality are not being met. In this new petition we explain that they cannot use the number of activated SIP cards as the basis for their services but to use the information from the water consumption, which is indisputable, to confirm the stable and floating population. We have had many conversations with technicians and request that if the numbers are not high enough to build a complete health centre, that a continuous point of assistance is needed in a proper newly constructed facility on land that has been set aside from the Municipality near the location for the second primary school. We hope that this time our constant petitions will be addressed with the agreement of all political groups to ensure that the needs of our neighbourhood are met.

The Mayoress has requested a meeting with the Councilor to deal with the issue, but has not yet received a date for this to happen. New Instituto (Secondary/High School) in Gran Alacant At last, the New Instituto is starting to become a reality! At the plenary session of the Town Hall on Wednesday 27th October the Edificant plan was approved after all the requirements were met. This step is very important because the Council sets deadlines for economic subsidies and the City Council will tender the different projects and works according to these deadlines. The full budget is broken down as follows: 2021 - €350,000 2022 - €1,000,000 2023 - €6,000,000 2024 - €3,990,473.08 TOTAL €11,340,473.08 Department of cleaning, parks and gardens The new team that are dedicated to improving and maintaining Gran Alacant have been very busy clearing many areas that had previously been neglected and were overgrown. They have also removed graffiti and repainted and repaired
damaged benches and equipment in the large play park by the Post Office roundabout. The bins that caught fire near the Centro Comercial in October were promptly replaced and the areas around all the bins within Gran Alacant are constantly being cleared and cleaned. You may have noticed that the perimeter fence of the Clot has gone green. This might have seemed a little strange as it feels like it has always been wooden, however, when this fence was first erected and the Clot inaugurated over 10 years ago, it was green. The paint that has been used is a special exterior paint and will help to keep the fence in good condition. I understand that initially it will take some time to ensure that all areas of Gran Alacant are brought to a good level but hope that residents can already see the impact that the team is having. Going forward they will create a regular schedule to ensure that all areas of Gran Alacant will be kept clear and not return to their previous neglected state. Fumigation Due to the forecast of heavy rains in November additional fumigations were carried out to prevent a large infestation of mosquitoes.

The building that used to house the Gabe Market has recently been successfully demolished to make way for the construction of a new Aldi supermarket. Gabe Market will soon be open again in its new home which is currently being built across the street from its previous location. GRAN ALACANT IS FULL OF AMAZING PEOPLE as our readers can confirm ... No need for names, just a true story about Lavanderia. The story so far, and it’s good, I was helping Ines with cleaning and took some bedding to the launderette up the top, near Tommy's bar. I put a 5€ note into the change machine and only got one 1€ coin out. I called the number on the door to let them know, however, the owner couldn’t do anything as it was Sunday and asked me to call back tomorrow! As usual I forgot, however, he called me at 6.00 pm on Monday and came to my house with the 4€ that was short from the machine. Professional or what? I wrote that off as a loss, not all people are out to rip you off.

Not only did the couple that found it, deliver Casper's collar but they also brought him a bag of his favourite treats ... So we would like to say a big thank you to Geoff and his wife for this kind gesture... Lou & Ged xxx If you have a similar story, please share it with us and email info@granalacantadvertiser.com

Wishing you peace, joy and very good health for the holiday season and beyond. Merry Christmas! Let's talk about chronic kidney disease ... The kidneys are responsible for filtering waste and excess fluids from our body, which are eliminated through urine. In some circumstances, pathologies such as high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity can permanently affect the proper functioning of these organs. What is chronic kidney disease? Chronic kidney disease affects the functions of the kidneys over time. There are different degrees of severity and they are defined by how much the kidneys filter. It is very common in the population, one in 7 adults suffers from chronic kidney disease. In Spain. What are the causes of chronic kidney disease? Chronic kidney disease can occur at any age and for multiple causes, although most cases occur in people with diabetes, high blood pressure, and people over 50 years old. To detect it, a routine laboratory study is carried out where CREATININE is evaluated in a normal blood sample and renal filtration is calculated. In addition, a
urinalysis is performed that will inform us of the presence of PROTEINS (albumin), which is a marker of kidney damage. How can I prevent chronic kidney disease? People in risk group (diabetes, high blood pressure or over 50 years) should be monitored frequently. Consider the following golden rules to prevent chronic kidney disease: 1. Eat healthy and keep your weight under control 2. Stay fit and active 3. No smoking 4. Maintain a healthy fluid intake (8 glasses of safe water per day) 5. Maintain regular control of blood sugar levels (control diabetes) 6. Control blood pressure (Do not abandon treatment) 7. Check your kidney function if you have one or more risk factors (remind your GP to include CREATININE and the detection of PROTEINS in the urine in the routine) 8. DO NOT self-medicate, especially avoid anti-inflammatories since those taken abusively can damage kidney function.

When kidney functions are lost, typical complications appear such as anemia, bone alterations, increased uric acid and related arthritis, difficult-to-manage high blood pressure and edema. In the most severe cases, itching, irritability, a tendency to sleep, and serious neurological and cardiovascular complications may appear. Treatment Treatment in the initial stages is aimed at preventing the progression of chronic kidney disease and its complications.

YOUR HEALTH IS OUR PRIORITY
Adequate hydration, healthy eating and staying active are pillars of treatment. Smoking worsens the course of CKD. There are medications that can help slow the progression of the disease and treat complications such as anemia. Information to take into account 1. Chronic kidney disease is ASYMPTOMATIC most of the time. 2. It is detected by simple routine studies. 3. People with diabetes or hypertension or over 50 are more likely to suffer from the disease. 4. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can prevent its occurrence. 5. Special interest: DO NOT abuse anti-inflammatory drugs without medical supervision. 6. There is drug treatment to delay the evolution of chronic kidney disease and treat complications. In the most compromised cases, the person may require replacement of kidney PLAZA MAYOR

BOOK CLUB GRAN ALACANT TRUST US Book of the month by Beth This has been on my list of books to read for a while. An interesting story of identity and self exploration My Recommended Book of the Month
Brit Bennett The Vanishing Half
Beth worked as a Qualified Librarian in Aberdeen for 20 years. She loves reading and delights in finding exciting new authors as well as reverting back to favourite writers of all genres. Beth has lived in Gran Alacant for the last 15 years.
Identical twins Stella and Desiree Vignes are brought up in the town of Mallard which is full of light-skinned black people who prize their pale colouring. The twins run away from home at age 16. Ten years later they live very different lives. Desiree has returned to Mallard with her black daughter Jade and is back home living with her mother Adele. Stella meanwhile has learnt to pass for white. Her husband and daughter Kennedy know nothing about her past This is a powerful family epic, which reminds us poignantly that life is not just black and white. It explores some of the multiple reasons people sometimes feel pulled to live as something other than their origins ...

BOCAIRENTE - A SLICE OF MEDIEVAL SPAIN
A visit from friends from Finland gave an excuse to revisit one of the most intriguing local towns; Bocairente. This little town lies just over the border into Valencia Province and is situated in a mountainous region of high peaks and steep gorges. It sits atop a rocky spur of land with sheer drops down to the valley below on three sides. The town in its present form is believed to date back to muslim times and was conquored by Christian forces in around 1250. It preserves a fascinating set of features from its Islamic and early Christian history. It also possesses possibly the most stunning location of any local town. The town has at its centre a magnificent elongated market place hedged around with exceptionally tall ancient houses of seven or eight storeys, reminiscent of Italian towns of a similar period. The market place
contains restaurants and bars in which to enjoy lunch or simply a drink surrounded by this extraordinary townscape. The market place is however just an overture to what lies up in the oldest part of the town.
Up a steep ramp one enters a maze of alleyways and passages dating back to the period of muslim rule by the Caliphate of Cordoba. One climbs higher and higher

past churches and stone houses quite literally stepping in the footsteps of men and women who lived in the town well over a thousand years ago. The old town is a place to wander and explore; everywhere there are remnants of the history of the place, maybe a street name recalling some previous trade carried on or a medieval church built on the site of a former mosque. It is not a museum town however and the old town still hums with evidence of everyday family life such as modern children’s playgrounds sited in the little neighbourhood squares. Eventually one crosses the ancient heart of the town and descends to its opposite side. Here one encounters medieval gateways leading out of the line of the old town walls and into a very special space; “La Ruta Mágica”. La Ruta Mágica (“the magic route”) is a walking route that has been created around the foot of the old town walls skirting three sides of the rocky peninsular upon which the town sits. The walk includes several remarkable survivors of the town’s history including an impressive view of the winding pilgrimage route to the town hermitage on the other side of a barren valley. Further along from the hermitage are the town’s famous caves (Covetes dels Moros), these were used for a variety of purposes over the years and it is now possible to explore them, although be warned it is only for the relatively fit and intrepid!
times and contain little orchards, walled vegetable gardens and miradors to enjoy the spectacular views across the steep valley with the river below. This part of the town does indeed seem timeless and weaves an enchanting spell upon any visitor. Above all it is the town’s location, perched high on its little peninsular, that gives it a special atmosphere. The surrounding valleys are varied in character. On one side of the town the valley is barren and broad giving a wide vista into a forbidding and almost desolate landscape. In contrast, the valley on the opposite side of the peninsular is deep but quite narrow with an intimate sense of space and scale; this valley contains the rivers Vinalopo and Clariano and its waters bring life in abundance with layers of vegetation obscuring the valley floor far below.
We have visited the town three times already and find something new on every visit, not least the warm and relaxed welcome from the townspeople who seem to know that they are the custodians of a rather special, and Our favourite part of the Routa Magica is where perhaps magical, place. it winds through a complex of terraces built into the hill sloping down to the river below. WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? TRUST US
by Mark Etheridge
WHITE-HEADED DUCK careless visitor has tossed away and which ended up in the pool, and they probably didn't give it a second thought. The Park Rangers in the Clot are aware of this bird, but it would be an extremely difficult task for them to catch it and relieve it of the problem.
My picture this month is of a White-headed Duck found in the Clot during October this year. This is a female; the male bird has the white head with a black crown line, and in the breeding season it has a distinctive bright blue bill. Another globally endangered species, it has a stronghold in our area and has benefited from the work done in the Clot to improve the environment for both this species and the similarly endangered Marbled Duck. It is becoming something of a conservation success story which the Spanish Nature Authorities can be proud of! But no amount of conservation overcome sheer stupidity.

If you look carefully at my photograph, you will see that something is not quite right here. The duck does not have green neck feathers – what you are seeing is some sort of elastic band which has caught up around the bird's neck and beak. The first indication that I had when I first saw this bird that all was not well was that she was shaking her head repeatedly in futile attempts to remove it, and as it moved closer it was obvious that she was in some distress. The dreadful thing about this is that the White-headed Duck rarely comes to dry land, spending all of its time on the water, and diving regularly to feed under water. This bird has been caught up in something like a discarded medical mask which some

This is not the only incident of this type of thoughtlessness which I have encountered; most wildlife watchers can recount tales of animals being caught up in plastics, discarded fishing equipment or wires, sometimes leading to a prolonged and painful death. The White-headed Duck will probably survive this problem, but it will be a miserable existence in what is supposed to be a safe area for her to live in. In the past, the main threats to the White-headed Duck have been loss of habitat, hunting and interbreeding with an introduced North American species, the Ruddy Duck. Unfortunately, the introduction of the Ruddy Duck was the responsibility of the great naturalist Sir Peter Scott, but at that time there was no realisation that the American bird could interbreed with the Whitehead, and that their offspring were viable in their own right, threatening the purity of the original species. The Ruddy Duck has mostly been eradicated from Europe, so it is now less of a problem than it was. Spanish hunters are totally prohibited from hunting the White-headed Duck, with heavy penalties for infractions of the law, and as we have seen in the Clot and elsewhere in Spain, habitat conservation and improvements have made great strides in recent years. It would be a great pity if human carelessness now becomes the biggest threat to this fascinating bird. You can see more photos of our local wildlife by visiting https://marketheridge.smugmug.com/

PETS IN SPAIN www.petsinspain.com
Pets In Spain is a website dedicated to the re-homing of abandoned and unwanted animals on the Costa Blanca. Whether you are looking to adopt an animal, advertise an animal or if you simply want to know more about taking care of your pet in Spain, please take a look at our site or Call: 645 469 253 or email: info@petsinspain.com Born in the garden of a house when the owner was in another country and unable to return to Spain because of the pandemic restrictions on travel, this kitten, along with his mother and his three siblings, had a peaceful first three months of life, but then the owner, a known hater of cats, returned to the house. A neighbour informed us of the events that led up to Joey being brutally attacked, close to death and losing a leg. Joey is now 4 months old, good with other cats and needs a home. To view more animals for adoption visit our website. If you would like to advertise an animal email: info@petsinspain.com

We are well into the running season now with running clubs and local authorities arranging runs ranging from 5k to 42k.
Brigitte and Claudia have entered the SuperHalfs Challenge, which requires them to run 5 half marathons (5 x 21k) in 36 months. The races are in Cardiff, Prague, Lisbon, Copenhagen and Valencia and after their last one they receive their SuperHalfs Medal. They recently competed in the Valencia 21k, but due to Covid this event does not count towards their SuperHalfs so they will run it again next year.
and John has just completed the End to End virtual challenge for Route 66 by running and walking 2278 miles this year.
Claudia & Brigitte Valencia Half Marathon
Andy is pursuing his fitness programme with 2-3 sessions per week. Staffan visited in early November and was seen running with Claudia but now he is back in Sweden running in the cold. Jeanne also returned to Norway for a short time where she ran in cold wet conditions but is now back in GA and enjoying the warmer conditions. John and Graeme continue to run the Saturday Park Run (5k) with impressive times
Jan is training hard in the UK as she prepares for her first Santa Pola 21k. Presently there are 6 of us entered for the Santa Pola 21k in January with training and preparation well under way. Come along on 23rd January to cheers us on. You will easily recognise us in our bright yellow Gran Alacant Runners tops (kindly sponsored by GA Homefinders). Lamb taking over as treasurer and Michael Curtin as kit-man. Julie Lewis has set up and will administer our new Facebook page. Those who use social media please check it out and we welcome all positive input.
Our Annual Group Meeting on 9th November was well attended with everyone contributing and welcoming the news that we can look forward to playing on an AstroTurf pitch. The budget for an 8-a-side area has been approved. Our local GA councilor Oscar Valenzuela will continue to fight for a full 11-a-side area. We will update as and when the project is put out for tendering. Several people also hoped that we would continue to use the indoor playing area as it provides challenges that require different skills. I will be continuing as secretary with Dave
The numbers attending our Indoor Sessions on Wednesdays at 11am are steady. In addition to our local regulars we are joined each week by a variety of old friends as they become more comfortable travelling to the Costa Blanca after receiving their booster jabs. It was agreed to get Moises Pizarro to book our indoor sessions up to Wednesday 15th December and to recommence again on Wednesday 12th January.
