We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, including that from a representative from the Town Hall, as we have since May 2005.

If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine - granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.co.uk Hello Everyone, As the end of what has turned out to be an exceptional year is almost upon us, Ged and I would like to thank our readers whose emails, questions and anecdotes we welcome and enjoy. It is nice to be appreciated and this lovely poem from one of our readers seems to sum it up nicely. We also want to say a big thank you to all the businesses that have continued to advertise with us and keep the Gran Alacant Advertiser going in these difficult times, without you our magazine would not be possible. We also want to thank our regular contributors who give our readers something new to enjoy each month and keep us updated with sporting events such as the GA Walking Football Club, the Monte y Mar Bowls Club and the Golf, Cycling and Running Clubs. We want to thank Barry for his continued support of our community magazine and providing us with Barry´s Bit of News. We hope Mark who writes “What's New in the Clot” has a speedy recovery and wish Heidi and Olli all the best after their move back to Finland, their Hiking articles were really motivational. We also look forward to hearing more from Star and Ashlee once it's easier for them to go “Out & About” again. After this year I think we can all agree that we never know what is around the corner but Ged and I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and all the best for 2021. Gran Alacant really is an amazing place to live and a lot of that is due to the wonderful people who are lucky to call it home. Lou & Ged x

LATEST NEWS FROM THE GA COUNCILLOR OSCAR VALENZUELA

HEALTH CENTRE The additional strain on the Health Centres due to the pandemic have been recognised by the Ministry of Health and they have provided a new telephone number: 961 839 000 that you can use to make an appointment if you are struggling to get through to the Health Centres directly. Please remember that appointments are for an initial telephone consultation with the Doctor who will then decide if they need to see you in person.

We also visited the area adjacent to the clot that runs along Avenida del CarabassĂ. Given its great size and absolute neglect, it will take a while to get it into a good state, however, once this has been achieved, it will also be regularly maintained.

You can also book appointments online at: http://www.san.gva.es/cita.../citaprevia_ general_val.html Gran Alacant Health Centre: 966 912 360 Santa Pola Health Centre: 915 300 966 Santa Pola 24 hour Emergency Centre: 966 915 303 ADDITIONAL CLEARING AND CLEANING IN GRAN ALACANT At the end of October I met with the Councillor for Cleaning, Parks and Gardens at the Dog Park. We discussed the need to improve and properly maintain the dog park and the adjacent areas where walking had become difficult. A large clearing and cleaning operation was implemented and the Councillor will ensure that a proper maintenance schedule is put in place to keep these areas clear in the future.

Clearing tasks have also been carried out in the lower part of Gran Alacant. This was especially important and necessary for the watercourse that crosses Avenida de Noruega which has suffered from inadequate maintenance in the past. I want to thank the Department of Cleaning, Parks and Gardens for their work, they always attend to the needs that arise as soon as possible.

GRAN ALACANT SCHOOL ISSUES I and the Mayoress of Santa Pola continue to insist to the Ministry of Education, that the needs of the families are mandatory, even more so with the evolution of the pandemic and the additional restrictions on class sizes, but for the moment, although everyone agrees with the proposed solutions in the short and medium term, the Ministry does not seem to have the political will to carry them out. The serious overcrowding of the IES Cap de l ’Aljub (Instituto) in Santa Pola, is largely derived from the lack of an Instituto in Gran Alacant. There is still no progress in the construction of the Gran Alacant Instituto even though it is included in the Edificant plan, has met all the requirements and corrections that were requested by the Ministry of Education and has been in place for a year. An interim solution to install some portacabins in Gran Alacant that would be an extension of the IES Cap de l´Aljub has

been agreed by all parties (parents, political groups, AMPAs and Education Inspectors) and has been requested from the Ministry three times since February. This new and temporary section of the IES Cap de l´Aljub would ease the overcrowding issue until the Gran Alacant Instituto is operational. We at the Council get the feeling that there is no will to solve the problems of overcrowding in Gran Alacant, a neighbourhood that brings together more than a third of the total municipality's school population. The interim solution to the problem has not been addressed and although on the 27th of October the City Council were given some powers within the Edificant plan, they have not included the power to build the Gran Alacant Instituto as a permanent solution. Additionally, the construction of the second Primary school has not been tendered yet, even though the project has been completed and corrected for more than a year.

BARRYS BITS OF NEWS Wow, yet another Christmas edition. Where has this year gone. The virus is certainly causing problems everywhere and Gran Alacant is no exception. Where on earth will it all end?! How many businesses will be left here on our lovely urbanisation?!!

NEW HOTEL We asked Oscar if you had any news of a completion date for the new hotel being built on Gran Alacant. Pictures show the hotel entrance, plants all planted and car park spaces marked out.

TIDY UP What a difference everywhere looks on GA after the massive clean and tidy up. Will this now be looked after every month, does the town hall have funds for this to happen? A massive transformation at the front of the clot where everywhere inside the wooden fence has totally been opened up. Just a bit worried to see so many very old almond trees taken out, is there a reason for this or did the truck driver become a bit over zealous. Thank you Oscar and the Town Hall!

Oscar Valenzuela’s Reply: The company will complete the works at the beginning of next year. They will open as soon as possible but there is no specific date due to current COVID situation.

THANK YOU REPORTER DORENE Here is a little thing we saw this morning in Santa Pola....from your very own roving reporter Dorene :)

BAD MOVE We had a very nice spell of weather during November, but were warned at one point that a storm was brewing and was due to hit our urbanisation. As it happened we, one night, had a sandy rain. Yes the kind of rain that floods your home gardens and car and leaves it all in a horrible brown colour. Over zealous people then went and washed everywhere down the next day, and even washed their cars. Then what happened the next night, we woke to another sandy rain that covered everywhere again. The sunshine then returned and everywhere could at last be cleaned up again.

CHRISTMAS CARD Our friend received an early Christmas card, arriving in mid November. It was not until she read the card, and saw the date of posting, that she realised it was posted TWO YEARS ago!!!!

DOCTOR What a nightmare trying to see a doctor on Gran Alacant this month. First you ring for an appointment. Nobody answers the phone. You then go to the surgery for appointment. When you get appointment, lets say for 4pm, you cannot see the doctor, but he or she ring you.

an an still will

The doctor then rings you at anytime in the day, not relative to the appointment time, and if you do not speak Spanish the doctor said (as happened to a friend) you should have a translator sitting with you, presumably all day until the phone call comes.

Myself and my wife Sandra hope you all have a great Christmas despite all of the obstacles that we are having to put up with.

Not good if you are unwell. Very unhelpful.

Book of the month by Beth Dark evenings have arrived. There is no better time to pick up a good book and snuggle up on the sofa in front of a cosy fire. I have a great suggestion for you ... The Great Alone by Kristin Hanna is this month’s recommendation

Beth worked as a Qualified Librarian in Aberdeen for 20 years. She loves reading and delights in finding exciting new authors as well as reverting back to favourite writers of all genres. Beth has lived in Gran Alacant for the Once you start reading this book last 15 years.

you will not want to put it down. It follows a family’s move to Alaska and all the beauty, loneliness, passion and endurance that it takes to survive this new life.

A story about love and community but also violence and despair. It offers an insight of a way of life that few could survive but in which some can thrive. I had not read this American author before and was not disappointed!

Gratitude this December

Hello readers, welcome to December, hard to believe we are on the final month of this year, the final month of what can only be described as the craziest year ever for the world. Let’s put our grateful head on that we are here and soldiering on and embrace 2021 to be a better year than this one! I want to take the opportunity on this occasion to thank you all for reading my blog every month, I have really enjoyed sharing the holistic life with you all. I would also like to send a big thank you to Lou & Ged for making this fabulous magazine happen and sharing great community spirit throughout it every month. As you may know I have been writing this blog for a few years now and feel my time has come to take a natural break from it, I will still very much be here advertising my offers etc every month and I am doing a few new courses over the next year to grow a better service for you all. These courses include refresher on Remedial Massage,

26

Holistic teaching and Functional Nutrition to follow up from my Holistic Nutrition course. I am also collaborating now with some fabulous people at the Simple Social Hub once or twice a month and really enjoying the new path of joining this. For this month I would like to leave you with the “attitude for gratitude” way. When we develop an attitude to be grateful for the little things in our lives, our lives in turn become so much more fulfilled, it is too easy at times to focus on the negatives (especially with the year we have had) missing our families, missing out on special events and overall everyone has felt the struggles somewhere. But it is nicer to look at these things as being so lucky to have someone or something in your life that is so special that you miss it. Fortunate to have this, even on the hard days. I say wake up every single day and start your day with 3 things that you feel grateful for in your life. When you focus your attention to what you are grateful for notice your day becoming easier and your mood more pleasant.

Don’t stress about the small stuff, sometimes the world events are out of our control and just be okay with that, what you can control is your choice, and your choice to be happy. Life isn’t always easy, and we all get hurdles in our path from time to time, but that’s what makes us human. Lift the spirits up of your friends, of your neighbours and just send a kind word or message to someone who you feel may need to hear it, it may just brighten their day. Spread the warmth of joy and happiness and also don’t stress about the overeating we will all do throughout the festive season, instead, just enjoy it and be kind to yourself. I can’t wait to eat all the xmas goodies, noting better than cosy nights, Christmas films and lots of munchies with the Christmas tree up. Heaven.

EAT…DRINK…AND BE MERRY Have a fabulous festive season one and all, and I really hope we all have a much better year ahead… For anyone still wishing to know any holistic remedies for certain ailments etc please feel free to get in touch with me and I will be happy to offer my service.

FAREWELL & GOOD LUCK

Last month our colleague Annika returned to Sweden, where her family were waiting for her in a beautiful city called Gรถteborg. For 3 years she had been working with us at GA-Homefinders and they have passed in the blink of an eye. Her colleagues in the GA-Homefinders team and all the clients she helped to find their perfect home, were touched by her sympathy, sincerity, team spirit and above all, her big heart. Now, she is starting another chapter of her life and here in Spain we already miss her and the special moments we shared over the last 3 years. It is hard not having her here and none of the GA-Homefinders team can imagine not seeing her again, so IT IS NOT A GOODBYE FOR US! One day, we will go and visit her, simply because she is no longer a work colleague, she is a true friend ! From the bottom of our hearts we wish her all the best and are glad to have met such an exceptional and unique person. See you soon, Annika! You can count on it! Philippe Blache GA-Homefinders Team

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? TRUST US

by Mark Etheridge

STONECHAT

I was surprised to realise the other day that I’ve been writing this column since 2009; I was checking back to see which species I haven’t covered yet, or perhaps which ones needed a bit of an update to reflect changes which have occurred in the Clot. We have gained more species than we have lost, that’s for sure, with all the improvements which have taken place over the past few years. Also around this time of year, I try to do something seasonal, but you’ll be relieved to read that I’m not doing that traditional Christmas bird – the Robin – yet again this time. However, there may be those of you who have taken a quick glance at my picture and thought “Oh, no, he’s going to bang on about Christmas Cards and Victorian Postmen again!” The bird in my picture might look like one, but it is definitely not a Robin. Say hello to the Stonechat, a regular bird throughout the year in the Clot, but generally confined to sandy areas or places with low-growing shrubs, as well as open marshy areas. As you can see, the male has an orange-red breast similar to our old friend the Robin, but in contrast it has a blackish head and a natty white half collar, with brown and black patterned wings – during the winter it looks a little

56 56 56

more washed-out, with less vivid colours. The female is a much paler bird, showing more brown around the head and a less vivid orange on the chest. They are very slightly smaller than a Robin, but you’d have to see them side-by-side to notice the difference. Your usual sighting of a Stonechat will be at the top of a bush or an isolated clump of grass in barren areas, where it sits and flicks its wings and tail whilst uttering its distinctive call – a sound just like someone is banging two pebbles together, repeated three or four times. It also has a high squeaky song, much less musical than the Robin’s warble and less far-carrying. Quite often, these birds go around in pairs, so somewhere nearer the ground will be the female bird if you look carefully. Distantly related to thrushes and flycatchers, the Stonechat feeds on insects, seeds and small worms. They are resident in the Clot, but their numbers in winter may be augmented by short distance migrants from further north. There is also a very similar bird called a Whinchat, which is a migrant bird and usually only seen in our area in transit during spring and autumn The Spanish name is Tarabilla Comun, which means Common Chatterbox, but in Galicia, it is called Chasco Comun, which some sources (including the Spanish version of the RSPB) mistranslate as Common Disappointment! So season’s greetings to all of you, and hopefully I will see you next year! You can see more photographs of birds and other animals from our area by visiting www.marketheridge.smugmug.com See you next month.

PETS AND NEW TECHNOLOGIES ALERT COPS APP

From last November 13th an app from Ministerio del Interior (Spanish Home Office) called Alert Cops is available, and one of its multiple purposes is to report the Police in a quick way any case of animal mistreatment. This alert arrives immediately to Guardia Civil or Policía Nacional. Alert Cops app is been working for several years as a way of reporting crimes such as gender violence, robberies, aggressions or illegal home occupation. Now, a new icon called “animal mistreatment” is been added to the app, so when clicking this icon we may report the alert via chat or voice message, and even attach pics or videos as an evidence. Stopping animal mistreatment is everybody’s task, and one of the tools we have is articles 337 and 338 from Spanish Penal Code, about mistreatment crimes: causing injuries or death with no justification, abandoning or sexual exploitation to domestic or tamed animals. Apart from the app, every case of major crime of animal mistreatment can be reported in different ways: • Directly to local authorities: Local Police, Policía Nacional or Guardia Civil-Seprona officers, or Environmental agents.

Tel: 966 698 569 • To local administration (Town Hall). • To Court or Environmental Prosecutor. New technologies help us to keep happy and healthy our pets, too. There are lots of apps at Google Play which advise us, for example, about the right daily quantity of food an animal needs, according to its peculiarities (breed, age, body condition, exercise, and even the trademark of dry food

we use). In our practice is quite common to find overfed pets, just because nobody is controlling which are its real food requirements. In many cases having a look to the bag of food, where you can see a table with feeding instructions is enough to improve dramatically your pet’s quality of life. “I just fill the bowl and my pet eats what it wants” is not a valid option in most cases. Of course, if you have any kind of doubt about how to feed properly your pet, one of the best options is to ask for Vet’s advice. Another kind of apps related to pets is games for cats, which usually are very funny. They are suitable for phones and tablets, and they consist of figures which move, slowly or quickly, and suddenly appear and disappear from the screen, so the cat will try to catch them. The only thing we must care about is to make sure our device screen is strong enough, and the cat legs are reasonably clean. Finally, we would like to wish everybody merry Christmas and a happy 2021, when, hopefully, life will be back to normal if NCoV-19 vaccines prove to be effective.

GRAN ALACANT WALKING FOOTBALL

A meeting was held on 11th November to discuss the future of the group with the present State of Alarm and the nonavailability of the Jose Antonio Aleman Valero indoor sports facility in Gran Alacant.

It was collectively agreed that the group should remain in existence and try to get clarity on exactly which sports are allowed to use the indoor facility. The Valencian guidelines indicate we could restart, but Santa Pola have refused so far. We will also have a monthly social gettogether at an outdoor location, complying with all the current social distancing rules, commencing on Wednesday 2nd December at 1pm in the Masa Square area outside The Pub. This way members can get a first hand update each month on any progress being

GRAN ALACANT RUNNERS

made.

GRAN ALACANT GOLF SOCIETY

Of course it has been a difficult year for all but with the approach of the Christmas season lets hope for some joy, cheer and goodwill. So from all at GAGS we wish everyone a Merry Christmas.

Starter may request we change the time so unless you are a regular golfer it would be best to check with us beforehand.

Back to golfing matters, our tee times for December are somewhat mixed so please get in touch so we can advise the time appropriate to your planned round. When we move into the new year the times are more settled around a 9am start to avoid the darker and colder early mornings.

Cost: usually 50 euros per round at peak times to include a buggy plus 1.50 euros mandatory insurance charge.

The Society details are as follows: Where: El Plantio Golf Resort. The offficial address is A-79, Km3, 03114, Alicante. When: the formal Society Day is Tuesday’s weekly when all golfers are most welcome. In addition we have an informal get together on Friday’s weekly which has always been a Gentleman’s Day. Time: on both days at normally at 8am so please be there by 7.40am. Occasionally the

Can be cheaper during less busy off peak seasons. In addition the Society requires 5 euros sweep money which is all paid out at the end of the round. As always new members and/or guests are always welcome, whether a full time resident, someone with your own holiday home for regular visits throughout the year or a holiday maker in the region. We would love to see you. For more information please contact either Barry C (686180585) or Barry D (966183018)
