Hello everyone. We wish all of our readers and advertises a HAPPY and HEALTHY 2012. Times are hard for everyone at the moment. Our front cover picture shows our Mayor, Miquel Zaragoza opening the new sports centre on Gran Alacant. This January edition was printed in the third week of December and as Our printer closed early for Christmas we had a very short period of time during December to produce this edition. The winner of the prize wordsearch at Los Belgas was Eudes Vanhilderson. Have a good month. Sandra & Barry
Our little dog from the front cover has hidden herself away in the magazine, can you find her? Last month she was at the art classes.

13
A warning email to us Dear Barry & Sandra,
I hope you will have space in your superb magazine to print the following cautionary tale.
We have a house in Gran Alacant. In early November we were at home, in South Wales, when, at 10.30pm, we received a phone call from our daughter. The conversation started 'I don't want to worry you but........ your next door neighbour, in Spain, has just phoned to say that there is water pouring out under your front door, through the front gate and for about 25ms down the road. Before phoning us, our daughter had phoned our friends, who hold our key in Spain, and they went immediately to see what the problem was. After many phone calls and an exhausting time for our friends and neighbour, the water was isolated and the ground floor of our house mopped out.
Next day our friends reported that, luckily, there was minimum damage in our property. The repair man found that the braided tube connected to the sink, in the downstairs toilet, had a 30mm split in the rubber internal tube.
We arrived on the 26th of November to find that there was indeed very little damage. The kitchen door was a bit stiff but got better with use and there was some damp on the walls.
In retrospect it was lucky that we had given our daughter's number to our next door neighbour. (Our daughter is a secondary school Spanish teacher). Also we were lucky that we hadn't put tiles or wood underneath the front door. We had fitted a brush unit so, fortunately, the water could run through and not build up in the property. Now, when leaving the property, we shut off the water at the main stop cock outside. A lesson learned the hard way. Kester & Jen Reason, Gran Alacant & South Wales

A heart warming Lawyer Story
One afternoon a lawyer was riding in his limousine when he saw two men along the road-side eating grass. Disturbed, he ordered his driver to stop and he got out to investigate. He asked one man, "Why are you eating grass?" "We don't have any money for food," the poor man replied. "We have to eat grass." "Well, then, you can come with me to my house and I'll feed you," the lawyer said. "But sir, I have a wife and two children with me. They are over there, under that tree." "Bring them along," the lawyer replied. Turning to the other poor man he stated, "You come with us, also." The second man, in a pitiful voice, then said, "But sir, I also have a wife and six children with me!" "Bring them all, as well," the lawyer answered. They all entered the car, which was no easy task, even for a car as large as the limousine was. Once underway, one of the poor fellows turned to the lawyer and said, "Sir, you are too kind." "Thank you for taking all of us with you." The lawyer replied, "Glad to do it.." "You'll really love my place. "The grass is almost a foot high."

MABS Gran Alacant COFFEE MORNING
MABS are very pleased to report that the Christmas Get-together along with the Raffle and Table Top Sale on 6th December at Molly Malone's was very successful and enjoyable. We raised 101euros on the Raffle and 101.50euros on the sale items which was fantastic. A lot of volunteers, supporters and friends popped in to see us on this lovely sunny afternoon and stayed for a chat and of course to sample the freshly made mince pies. We were very pleased to welcome some new Spanish volunteers who want to help as translators and drivers. Our sincere thanks to Terry at Molly Malone's for hosting our Get-together and his continuous support to hold our events. Also to Sue Ruela our Regional Director and Linda who covers all our publicity who travelled down to be with us. I would like to say a special thank you to Barry and Sandra who always visit or report on the MABS events and work tirelessly to produce the Gran Alacant Magazine. It is so good to see Barry in good health again and I would like to wish everyone involved a much better New Year. Jan Wright and Angela Knapman - Co-ordinators for Gran Alacant Branch.

Last year I replaced all the windows in my house with those expensive, double-pane, energy-efficient kind. Today, I got a call from the contractor who installed them. He complained that the work had been completed a year ago and I still hadn't paid for them. Hellloooo,............just because I'm blonde doesn't mean that I am automatically stupid. So, I told him just what his fast-talking sales guy told me last year... that these windows would pay for themselves in a year,,, Helllooooo? It's been a year, so they're paid for, I told him.. There was only silence at the other end of the line, so I finally hung up. He never called back. I bet he felt like an idiot.

My grandson was visiting one day when he asked, "Grandma, do you know how you and God are alike?" I mentally polished my halo and I said, "No, how are we alike?'' "You're both old," he replied.

Tiger Loaf (Freeform)
Finally! This has been my nemesis for years but I have finally got it. Not just the look but the flavour of well known supermarket Tiger Loaf! After all the trials, just when I least expected it to work. So let's get started, you won't regret it! It is similar to a Dutch Crunch, but the crust is not supposed to be thick or particularly crunchy and it has a Sesame flavour. I have not bothered with too much detail here, except where it counts, there are other bread recipes with oodles of picks to look at. I am assuming that you know the basics of bread making on this one and that you either use a mixer or know how to knead by hand. The base is a Milk Loaf with an added ingredient. When it comes to the topping, buy the rice flour, don't grind your own, it won't be fine enough. This makes one decent size loaf. Toasted sesame oil from chinese supermarkets in Spain or easy to obtain in the UK. Ingredients Loaf *280g warm water (yes, weigh it!) *1 tsp sugar *2 heaped tbsp powdered milk *1 ½ tsp salt *2 tbsp toasted sesame oil *500g bread flour *25g fresh cake yeast Topping for one loaf *Approx 1 ½tbsp (WARM) water *½ tsp sugar *pinch salt *1 ½ tbsp rice flour *¼ tsp sesame oil (not toasted) *1 ¼ tsp instant yeast Method 1. In your mixer bowl, put the loaf ingredients in order listed, knead with a dough hook for about 6 minutes in total. 2. Remove dough from bowl, it should be soft and silky. 3. On floured surface, make it into a neat ball and return to bowl. 4. Put a plate over the bowl and set aside to rise until doubled. 5. As soon as you have put the dough back in the bowl, it is time to make the topping. 6. Mix the ingredients, in the order listed in a small cup. 7. It should look quite thick and creamy. 8. Cover and allow to rise. 9. When it is time to use it, it should be almost mousse like. Stir it, it should be very easy to spread but not drippy, a bit like a good icing. 10. Punch down the loaf dough and shape into a log. 11. If you are not familiar with the technique, there are plenty of internet videos or books on loaf shaping. 12. Use a short palette knife to spread on a regular, thin coating of topping. 13. Leave till almost doubled in size again, then heat the oven. 14. The topping will start to break up as the dough rises. 15. Bake at 230c (non fan) for about 25-30 minutes or until the loaf is 195 -200F (90-93c) inside with an instant read thermometer. 16. The loaf should have a good colour. 17. If you want a crisp top, leave uncovered on a rack to cool. 18. If you like a soft crust, put on cooling rack and cover with a well moistened cloth.
