We wish you all a happy and healthy 2013 With our printer shutting down for Christmas, we had one week less to produce this January issue. Thanks go to all of our contributers for getting copy to us in such a short time. Well, another year over. Amazing how many issues we have now produced. This May will take us to edition number 100. Running a business is very testing out here at the moment. This is one reason why we have kept our prices the same since we launched. This month should see the official opening of the new market area and hopefully there will be more to look forward to during the coming year, if funds allow. We are told by estate agents that houses are stilling selling and added to the new ones soon to hit the market, maybe the future is a bit brighter, even though these properties may be bought by non brits, it is making more numbers to use the local businesses. Have a good month, stay warm. Sandra & Barry

Our little dog from the front cover has hidden herself away in the magazine, can you find her? Last month she was on page 55.

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news, including that from our Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005. It is our perogative at the magazine, NOT to update this 2005 picture, as we all looked a great deal younger!!! Many times we have been asked, “Why is there not a cinema here with English speaking films”. Well, a new initiative by one of our Santa Pola advertisers, La Matera. (See their advert on page 25). They will pick you up from Gran Alacant, take you to their pizza house or restaurant. Take you to the cinema for a film and return you to Gran Alacant. For the entire trip it is 20€ if you have your meal at the pizza house, and 30€ if you prefer a meal in their restaurant. Their premises are on the sea front in Santa Pola. You can phone the number on their advert and book the cinema and meal for a Thursday evening. They can tell you in advance, which film will be shown. La Matera has a stall every Thursday on the GA market where you can ask them for more details. Please tell them you saw the article in our magazine. Two Ladies who we spoke to, thoroughly enjoyed the evening in November, watching the new Bond film and being chauffeured around. -------------------------Hi Barry, Sandra We went to the boxing last night, and they put on a very good show. I'm passing on some photos to you, and if you want to use any, feel free. The last contest was a local champion, I didn't get where the opponent came from (so much cheering going on), but he took some punishment, as you will see the knock-down punch and on his knee in one of the pictures. Dear Sandra & Barry. Having read your recent magazine and the article on "more speed bumps" for the area, I have to say that I totally disagree on this method of trying to slow down speeders. I have watched drivers that speed go over the bumps without slowing down and in some cases with the cars and motor cycles lifting off the ground, so the speed bumps have no effect on these people what so ever. But what they do in effect is to punish every driver, even people that drive within the correct speed limits by causing excess wear and tear on brakes and clutches and by damaging suspension units, which are not cheap to replace, and in the mean time, the speeders and dangerous drivers get away with it. There seems only two ways to slow these people down, one is plain clothes police monitoring the areas, stopping and giving out fines to these racers or speed cameras with again fines being handed out, but it is clear that speed bumps do not work. So please, no more of these things.

Puffed out o.a.p Ian Loreto did not think these pavements were wide enough for seating, so will look into it. -----------------------------Neighborhood Association of Gran Alacant European Residents (ASVEGA) organized on Sunday 16 December, the first edition of Bike Day, an activity-sports and family fun that is designed to promote the social life of the residential area. Francisco Martin, Gran Alacant Councillor and Sports, highlighted "the dynamism of the neighborhood association, made up of people restless when launching any activity on a pretty intense schedule throughout the year that deserves support from institutions, companies and volunteers. Elisabet Jorro, VP ASVEGA, explained that

We spoke again to Loreto on this subject and the only bumps due to be built are along the road near to the childrens playground opposite the big Chinese store. ---------------------Hi Sandra/Barry, After over 6 years of struggling up & down Maxcoop & cardiac hills, it is now time for some seats to be provided along the pavements on both hills. I find it amazing that there are seats all along the road from the college to the Centro & also on the road from the post office roundabout to the Centro on roads that are nowhere as steep as the afore mentioned. If there is no money available could 3 seats be moved from each of the smaller slopes to the 2 very steep hills, could this be brought to attention of Loreto it seems ludicrous that people are struggling up the hill with beach umbrellas etc,

"in this first edition we intend to continue doing things in Gran Alacant, so we started with a pretty humble bike ride through the area starting in the mall and run along Av. Noruega and back through the community garden, with family and friends. There were prizes for the oldest bike and for the most original, plus prize draw. " ------------------------The MABS afternoon Get Together was a great success with a fabulous turn out at Los Belgas restaurant. Owner Kelly was kept very busy serving coffee and mince pies, plus all of the usual beverages. A raffle was held, and there were many items to sell, all in aid of this very worthwhile cause.

7

A note from Jan (MABS) We were thrilled to see so many people coming along to support us, over a hundred, and part with their money everyone was so generous. We raised an amazing 587.20 euros altogether and the Raffle raised 200 euros. We were pleased that our

President Jacqui Phillips and Director Sue Ruela could make it and see what a good following we have here in Gran Alacant. We would like to thank everyone who came and especiall Kelly at Los Belgas who allowed us at short notice to hold our Christmas Get-together at her Restaurant. For next year we are holding our Walk for Life towards the end of April as usual and I will give a date as soon as I can. A note from Jacquelyne Phillips

(MABS) Angela and Jan do a great job with the Group giving assistance to those in need of help which ill with cancer. their fund raising on Wednesday was fantastic and I expect they have told you how much they raised. They do this event every year and I do try to get down to see them and their husbands who are also great supporters of the group. I can leave them to get on with the supporting and not have to worry and they report to Sue if there are any problems. Jean Ritenbund, is the main Fund Raiser and she has a team and by doing this she relieves Angela and Jan from that responsibility of raising funds for GA. More pictures in this issue of our magazine. -----------------------Good Morning Barry/Sandra Hope all is well in Spain here I am in Great Yarmouth working but in New Year returning to GA, as I will be working overseas from there. Always enjoy your magazine, either in GA or on net here or where ever I work. However may I respectfully ask who made the comments (magazine editorial) about the flooding problems being solved out side my house in DON PUEBLO, the drains are better, the problem has been helped by work carried out by Santa Pola council. The two drains (on each side of road) do flood and the water rises and (up to 300mm above road level) flows into our back area. One problem is the debris left on drain covers which I remove when rain is immanent, we have taken a photo, to show,( the water has not damaged the cars that park, as there has been an improvement) and have spent money putting glass blocks to stop any water getting into our basement. However the “rendering is now damaged due to water. I have visited Loreto at least three times my self over the years and my wife at least twice, on my last

visit. I passed on the above comments, but she was telling me that is going to be very expensive and very disruptive to solve as the road would have to be dug up in area towards Montafaro to Farmacia of which I understand. Loreto was telling what wonderful job had been done on Ave Noruega but as I pointed out to her, there are no houses there within 50 metres, but is a high profile site, and good for her/Santa Pola Council. The route cause of the problem up there is that the Life Resort was scrub area and self draining, and in building on this large area they captured all the water from this area and dumped it all in previously drains with no problems, while there like yourselves. I have brought up several points pertinent to locality and area in general, the bins opposite Don Pueblo Phase 2 that you have featured in magazine is still a problem, being used by several urbanisation, as well as the commercial units using the bins in particular a well know “supermarket” depositing boxes etc that most of us recycle. The parking problems on Calle Monte does not get better despite free underground parking which could be used for nigh classes and functions at the great asset we have at the life resort. Of course the dog problems around all area, was mentioned!!!. Despite all above my wife and I are looking forward to spending much more time at our home that my new job will allow. I was at Carrow Road on Sunday to see my team beaten, things have changed round there, all for the better since I was last there 30 years ago. Keep up the good work Seasons greetings Jim

Loreto disputes some of this email. Since repairs from the Town Hall, she has had NO complaints from anybody. If anybody has a problem, please book an appointment to talk to her and show her the photographs.

Envious of Jim being at the Norwich City ground, Carrow road. They were our local football team, so watch them every week on tv or computer. --------------------Hello Loreto we were given your name by the Montymar community who say you may be able to help. We took possession of our villa in 2006 and are still waiting from Masa for the Habitacion certificate the stress of this is making my husband and myself rather ill. We have been into Masa office, and called many many times and even got Abaco to try to get it . Masa say they are waiting for the architect who lives in Madrid and are unable to get him to sign. We have offered to go to Madrid and speak to the architect ourselves but Masa say they are dealing with it . Is there anything else we can do and can you help on our behalf? Name and address supplied

We showed your mail to loreto. Please book an appointment to see her on 966 697 749 and she will try to help you. ---------------------There should after January 15th be no rubbish or garden produce around the bins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There is now a purpose built area for all of us to take our rubbish to on Gran Alacant, if it cannot be placed IN THE BINS. Put it in yours or a friend´s car and take it to the new site on the right hand side just before the lighthouse. There will be someone there to take it from you on weekdays 9am to 1pm and 3pm to 6.30pm. Happy New Year to you all and on with 2013.

Anything you would like us to put to Loreto, just email it to us.

A wife invited some people to dinner.. At the table, she turned to their six-year-old daughter and said, 'Would you like to say the blessing?' 'I wouldn't know what to say,' the girl replied.

'Just say what you hear Mommy say,' the wife answered. The daughter bowed her head and said, 'Lord, why on earth did I invite all these people to dinner?'

Montemar in the Winter League

After their first win of the season against La Siesta and their rained off game against San Luis, it continues to be a Winter of discontent for Montemar. The results of their last five matches are: At home to Quesada they lost by two points to eight. Away to San Luis they lost by one point to nine. Away to Finca Guila they lost by four points to six. Home to San Miguel they lost by nought points to ten. Away to Javea Green they lost by two points to eight. But as they say its not the winning but the taking part that counts. Good luck to them in the new year.

A middle-aged couple had two beautiful daughters but always talked about having a son.

They decided to try one last time for the son they always wanted.

The wife got pregnant and delivered a healthy baby boy. The joyful father rushed to the nursery to see his new son.

He was horrified at the ugliest child he had ever seen.

He told his wife: 'There's no way I can be the father of this baby. Look at the two beautiful daughters I fathered!

Have you been fooling around behind my back?'

The wife smiled sweetly and replied: 'No, not this time!'

Hi everybody, In January the 5th we have parades for the Three Kings in every corner on the Costa Blanca. In Santa Pola it will take place on the 5th at 19:00h. If you want to enjoy one of the best parades for the Three Kings you have to go to Alcoy. I hope you have enjoyed, at least, one of the many cribs on display. In Santa Pola we have a beautiful one at the Castle. I know in Torrevieja there is another beautiful one. If you happen to go to Alicante, pop in at the Diputación Provincial building and have a look at the master pieces they got there. In Cañada next to Villena, they make a performance of the birth and the arrival of the Three Kings to bring presents to Jesus, is real theatre carried out by amateurs. This event is declared of national tourist interest. Once again I would like to remind you about the Santa Pola International Half Marathon, it will take place on Sunday 20th at 10:30 a.m., If you have not seen yet, do please come and enjoy the atmosphere, In my opinion is absolutely fantastic, the day before on Saturday afternoon you can also enjoy the fun race for children, we called Mini-Marathon but last year more than 1400 children took part in it. Be good and I’m sure one of the Three Kings will bring you a present.

A recipe from

Sandra’s Cookbook

which you can read online at:- www.sandrascookbook.com compiled by Sandra Bonathan (not Sandra from this magazine)

Garlic Bread Just right for munching with your favourite pasta dish or as a snack to go with drinks. You can of course make the dough in your bread machine if you have one, just take it out after the dough cycle has finished and follow the instructions for shaping and baking. If making by hand, knead for a good 10 minutes, (guys often like doing this!) Ingredients Base ½ pt water 1 ½ tsp salt 1 tbsp oil 1 tsp sugar 1 lb bread flour 1 ½ tsp instant yeast Topping 3 tbsp olive oil or 50g butter crushed garlic to taste (I use 4 large cloves) ½ tsp salt 1 tsp dried rosemary (opt) Coarse sea salt to sprinkle (opt) Method 1. Make the dough by putting the water, oil, sugar, salt, flour and lastly yeast in a large bowl. Mix to a soft dough. Knead till smooth, silky and pliable. Rest dough for 10 min. 2. Press or roll the dough into 2 greased swiss roll tins, or pizza trays, it should be quite thin. 3. Combine garlic, oil and salt and Rosemary if using. 4. Dimple dough with fingers. 5. Spread over the oil or butter mix. 6. Prick with a fork. 7. Sprinkle with coarse sea salt if using. 8. Heat the oven to 200 c. 9. Bake for about 15-20 min. The smell will fill the house - you have been warned! 10. Cut into squares with a sharp knife or pizza cutter.

A REMINDER FOR THE YEAR

A new year is beginning, so we would like to remind everybody some important matters for their pets: • Keeping updated the passport. This year, apart from the ordinary rabies and booster injections, it’s highly recomendable to have the animal protected against leishmaniasis (mosquito disease), whose vaccine is proving to be effective. Some animals were vaccinated for the first time last year: in this case it’s very important to keep the protection active year after year with a new injection (just one, not three like the first time), which has to be done maximum one year and three months after last year final injection. If we are late, we will need to start from zero, which implies paying again for three injections instead of one. • If the dog has previous health problems such as heart and lung diseases, or it’s a geriatric one, we recommend to do the kennel cough inoculation, because this disease, which is normally mild in a healthy animal, may be quite dangerous when suffered by an ill or old one. And, of course, inoculation becomes very important in animals which are going to be put in kennels, because it’s extremely contagious when a high number of dogs are living together. • Cats also need their specific vaccines (feline leukaemia, cat flu). These vaccines are not mandatory in Spain. You are obliged to vaccine a cat against rabies only if the cat is travelling abroad. • Keeping updated the antiparasitic treatments. There are different patterns, and normally is the Vet who decides which one is the best for every animal, considering the species, the weight, the price, if the animal is living indoors or outdoors, etc. We normally recommend to give the animal the lowest number of medicines possible for keeping them efficiently free of parasites. • ¬Checking the legal status of the animal: everybody has to make sure the address and telephone number is being updated at the

56

Liliana Aldeguer Cerdán 793 English translation by Sergio Reina Esteban col 747

microchip database (www.rivia.org), and, of course, having the dog registered at the Town Hall if you haven’t done it yet. Everybody have seen, for example in Santa Pola, Local Police is being very strict checking the legal status of every dog, not only the dangerous breeds individuals. So far, cats are not affected for all these new regulations (and taxes). • Controlling our pet’s weight. An obese animal is not happy. A good idea would be to weigh regularly the pet at the Practice scales, and ask the Vet for some advice about the right diet if the animal is putting too much weight on. A good weight control plan should last for, at least, 6 months, because if the weight loss is too quick, it may be dangerous for the pet’s health. • An even better idea could be to make the pet stop smoking. Normally we don’t realize that, when we smoke, our pet does it too, as a passive smoker. The problem is not very important in large dog, but in case of a small dog (under 7 kg), which normally tend to suffer from heart problems when it gets old, or maybe if it’s an asthmatic cat, the problem may be very serious, and even more if it’s a bird (a companion bird should NEVER be at the kitchen, because the smoke Teflon anti-adherent pans produce, may kill it in a matter of hours).

One final thing: if we are thinking of adopting a new pet, the very best option is visiting a decent animal shelter in which we can adopt a pet without being obliged to pay for the adoption, or to do all the vaccines, microchipping and neutering at the shelter (Spain is a free country. You can buy goods or services where you prefer). Remember an animal in a shelter hasn’t been “kidnapped” in any way, so you don’t have to pay for its “freedom”. Real shelters get financed by the Administration and/or their members donations, and never turn rescuing abandoned animals into a lucrative business.

WHAT’S THAT? IN THE

I am not keen on the idea of keeping birds in cages, but one of the nice things about Spanish towns and cities is the ever-present sound of Canary song coming from overhead balconies. Canaries are extremely popular here, and I suppose that since these birds are born and bred in captivity, they donʼt know of any other existence. In last monthʼs issue of the Gran Alacant Advertiser there was an email from Rose from London which mentioned the Serin, noting that it was “the original Canary”

Well, not quite as I shall explain. The Serin is probably not very well known to most people, even though it is one of the commonest birds in Spain. It is usually to be found high up in a tree, even in highly urbanised areas, and can be difficult to see – but you will certainly hear it. It has a by distinctive song, quite unlike the rich and varied sounds of Mark Etheridge the Canary. The song of the Serin has been likened to someone crushing splinters of glass, and is a squeaky collection of high-pitched squeaks, trills and rattles, delivered at a very fast pace. It is one of the defining wild sounds of the Costa Blanca.

CLOT?

The Serin is a close relative of the Canary, and the easiest way to see one up close is to pop down to the main pool in the Clot and watch the edge of the waters where the large flocks of Goldfinches gather to drink and bathe. Sooner or later you will see this slightly smaller bird with a very stubby beak – my picture is from this exact location, and shows the male Serin in all his finery. The females are much drabber, with less yellow in their plumage. They are not as confident down on the ground as the Goldfinches, and will take off at the slightest disturbance, as well they might, for they seem to be the perpetual victims of the bird world. Cats are a major predator, as are larger birds such as raptors and crows, but despite this their population is flourishing, with one estimate of up to 15 million birds in Spain alone. They are very scarce in the UK, with just a handful of individuals seen each year in South coast areas, with perhaps one or two successfully breeding. They range throughout most of Europe, more particularly in warmer areas, and are present all year round. This is another “must see” bird for visiting British birders, although one online comment I found referring to it as a “boring little yellow bird” does seem a bit of an injustice!

That stubby little beak is used to crush its favourite food of seeds and buds, although it also feeds on small insects and spiders. It is known as the Verdicello in Spain. See you next month.
