Hello everyone Welcome to our 90th monthly edition. We have crammed every available space with pictures and text to bursting at the seams, this month. The extra pictures that did not make it to print, can be seen on our website. We are sure businesses are happy to see more holiday makers about, who are enjoying the swimming pools and lovely beaches in the hot sun and then using their premises to enjoy their stay. With the European Championships held in late June and the final on the 1st of July, the urbanisation has been very colourful with flags of many countries fluttering from houses, restaurants and bars. As we go to the printer before the final we obviously do not know the outcome but, we are sure that if Spain wins we will all have known about it.... An official welcome to Camila, who is joining us at the magazine. More info on our news pages. The prize wordsearch winner was Angela White. Could we dispel a rumour about one of our loyal advertisers. Gran Alacant Services is NOT closing down. Have a good month Sandra & Barry Our little dog from the front cover has hidden herself away in the magazine, can you find her? Last month she was part of the MABS fun run

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news, including that from our Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005. It is our perogative at the magazine, NOT to update this 2005 picture, as we all looked a great deal younger!!! You may have noticed that we at the magazine have an extra helper. We are very happy that Camila has joined us, with her fluent Spanish and artistic talent, which we are sure will enhance our publication. Many of our advertisers will have already met her especially when she is round and about delivering the magazines.
How nice to see so much improvement work being made to pavements all over Gran Alacant. (pictures attached). The Carabasi area of work has been organised with manpower from the council, with the Town Hall just supplying materials. The improvements along Calle Mediterraneo is all paid for by central government, agreed and organised over 2 years ago.
Pictures elsewhere in this edition of the very successful relaunch of Plaza Mayor, (Masa Square). Good to see the repair work to the steps and a wheelchair access ramp now in place.

The new MASA Park (pictures here) which we have mentioned in the past is now coming to its conclusion. We will be at the official opening, so maybe, pictures next month
About 1,500 square metres of scrubland caught fire, for reasons still unknown, on the afternoon of Tuesday June 12. The fire originated about 6pm in an area very close to two developments in the Montemar area, near Avenida Noruega. Firefighters, were alerted by a local police patrol who were in the area, it took about an hour to extinguish the fire. Local people diverted traffic on the roundabout close to the danger given the proximity of existing housing. The European Residents Neighborhood Association organized a Drink and Tapas event at the Gran Alacant Commercial Centre. Eleven participating restaurants on Gran Alacant organized for the second time, took part in the event. The drink and tapas were at a basic price of one euro each. There was an increased interest in booking a 2nd table top stall at only the second of this newly arranged activity. It is hoped more and more stall holders will book a space, and then this will also eventually be held at the new market place. You can book a space by telephoning 609 932 578

The new market area is taking shape as these pictures show. This project is now coming to fruition after over 2 years in the pipeline and costs all agreed before the recession. Also included will be toilets, an admin block and a bar. The area will link to the sports centre to facilitate the amenities and parking.
The new Chinese bazaar is taking shape, better than having this part built building causing a constant eye sore.
Many many months ago in a previous edition we took pictures of an area of unused land which residents had spent big big money on, planting it up and adding pathways etc. Whilst we were in our meeting with Loreto, one of the residents came in to complain that some kids had been chased off, but came back during school time and destroyed much of this work. It is such a shame when so much work and time has gone into making this area a very pleasant place to be in. Loreto has phoned the police and hopefully the little b...ers will be taken to task. The residents can recognize them!!!!!!!!!!

The pipe work that was laid between the GA centre and the post office was to add cabling for upgraded internet lines etc. In some areas “down the hill” cockroaches were coming up through the drains. We had noticed that the drains had not been disinfected yet this year, so Loreto phoned those concerned, and the work was to take place on the evening of Monday 18th June. In the Clot article this month you will see the thoughts behind the mosquito spraying. Our Town Hall has contacted Elche (who are responsible for the clot) and asked them to use the special insecticide that be added to the water to kill off the larva before the mozzies hatch to solve this problem. If Elche will not carry this out, to help Gran Alacant residents Santa Pola have said with Elche´s permission they will carry out the task themselves. No news yet of work starting on the new flyover off GA. BUT IT WILL HAPPEN!!! The Gran Alacant fiestas will take place on July 19-20-21-22 at the Council office car park. Plenty of activities for young and old, provided from our Town Hall. Next year this event will be held at the new market place. The town of Santa Pola has made available the tent on the beach for the mentally handicapped every day in July and August, thanks to the cooperation of various municipal departments and a grant from La Caixa Foundation awarded to ADIPSA . Overcoming all difficulties, the mentally handicapped residents and visitors alike can enjoy this summer tent, a service that has a high level of demand, so it is possible that these users can enjoy the beach like any other person and is a great respite for family members. More news next month, enjoy the sun
An email to us at the magazine.
In reply to Billʼs letter in the June edition. He will be very happy to learn there are plans under way to do away with the cycle lane on the promenade as the cyclists say it ruins their tyres, also to make more parking by putting it back as it used to be. Also being a walker I can tell him why we walk on the cycle lane. Its because there is less chance of being mown down by skaters, as there have been six accidents with walkers and skaters so far this year, so Bill Iʼm afraid youʼll have to go back to being a pain for the motorists, Mary ( Arenales)

The night that...PLAZA MAYOR...rocked .......and a great night was had by all..at the re-launch of Plaza Mayor. The businesses at the square were so annoyed at the lack of action by the squares administraters, that they got together and paid for all of the clean up work themselves. The whole square powerwashed, steps repaired, wheelchair access and a general paint up cost mega bucks, and they were rewarded with a big crowd on this important night for them.

Today, the British Navy intercepted three boatloads of people off the Northern coast of France . this placed the Navy in an awkward position as the boats were heading not away from, but towards France . Another surprise finding was that they were loaded with British Citizens who were all seniors of pension age. Their claim was that they were trying to get to France so as to be able to return to Britain as illegal immigrants and therefore be entitled to far more benefits than they were receiving as legitimate British pensioners. The Navy, it is believed, gave them food, water and fuel and assisted them on their journey South. We are booking the next boat now, let me know if you want to come too

During his physical examination, a doctor asked a man about his physical activity level. He described a typical day this way: "Well, yesterday afternoon, I took a five hour walk about 7km through some pretty rough terrain. I waded along the edge of a lake. I pushed my way through brambles. I got sand in my shoes and my eyes. I avoided standing on a snake. I climbed several rocky hills. I took a few 'leaks' behind some big trees. The mental stress of it all left me shattered. At the end of it all I drank eight beers" Inspired by the story, the doctor said, "You must be one hell of an outdoors man!" "No," he replied, "I'm just a bad golfer".

A recipe from
Sandra’s Cookbook
Marinades
which you can read online at:- www.sandrascookbook.com compiled by Sandra Bonathan (not Sandra from this magazine)
Marinades make the difference between a Ok(ish) BBQ and a great one. Meat that would otherwise be dry and possibly tough can be tender and full of flavour if marinaded for an hour or two before you start cooking. When you want to cook, just take the meat out of the marinade and put it onto the hot grill. If you want, you can cook the remaining marinade to make a sauce or just use it to brush the meat as it cooks.
So what makes a marinade? There are some basics. Equal amounts of oil, lemon juice, and soy sauce mixed together is a good start. You can add so many different things to this basic mix that the varieties are endless. Think of your favourite herbs or spices, anything from coriander, Jamaican Jerk to garlic and ginger. A spoonful of any of those will add flavours to make your mouth water. If you like your meats slightly sweet or caramelised, add a dribble of honey or golden syrup or a spoon of brown sugar. Put the ingredients directly into a plastic food bag and squidge together. Add your meat of choice, tie shut and put in the fridge for an hour or longer. The lemon juice (or vinegar) helps to tenderise the meat but if using soy sauce, don't add any salt. Other flavours you may like are star anise (remove before cooking to avoid cracking a tooth), lemon grass and mustard (not all together though!)
Alternately, if you don't like soy sauce, you could use oil and a wine as the base for your marinade. Maybe with some tomato puree and oregano. Use your imagination and tastes that you know you like and you can't go far wrong. You'll soon have people lining up to come to your BBQs because they are no longer boring bangers and burgers. Happy Grilling!

TIMETABLE & ROUTE FOR THE GRAN ALACANT TOURIST TRAIN
A Day on Tabarca (advertisement)
One of the things quite often said about Gran Alacant is that there is nothing to do other than beach, bars and restaurants. I came across Dive Academy Santa Pola via google, rang them up and booked on a Snorkel Safari to Tabarca Marine reserve. Damon the owner lives in Gran Alacant and was happy to pick us up on route to the Dive Centre 10 minutes away in Santa Pola. We were teamed up with a mixed group of English and Dutch families and after putting on our wetsuits (mostly back to front) fins and masks (scuba divers frown on them being called flippers and goggles apparently) and headed off to the island on the taxi speedboat. After arriving on Tabarca, Jake our ‘divemaster’ gave us a quick brief on how to put the gear on correctly, safety procedures and marine life we were likely to see. The first site we visited was called the black skull a small rock island about 100 meters from shore. Initially the water is only 1 to 2 meters deep which was great for the kids to gain confidence and the wetsuits actually helped them float. As soon as your mask breaks the surface you can see literally thousands of fish much to the kids and big kids delight. Around the back of the black skull the water is a little bit deeper and the more adventurous amongst us were ‘duck diving’ to the octopus holes Jake expertly spotted. After a quick break we headed to another site and went in the limestone caves, I was a little apprehensive about this at first but the caves turned out to be breath taking and not at all claustrophobic. Again the marine life was spectacular and the water as clear as a swimming pool. We headed back on the boat about 2pm with a boat load of smiley, tired kids and adults alike. It was a great day rounded of nicely with a cold drink in Marina Miramar.
Dive Academy runs Snorkel Safaris on Tues, Thurs and Saturdays. Tel 965 414 510 or 648 463 310 www.diveacademy-santapola.com email: info@diveacademy-santapola.com

Dear Barry and Sandra, Your GA Advertiser has been on its European travels again. Now it has visited The Piazza della Signoria in Florence. Vivien is shown by the Benvenuto Cellini statue of Perseus which his been in situ since 1554 and Keith is below the copy of Michelangelo's David, which has stood there since 1873 when the 1503 original was taken to The Acadamia Gallery. Makes you feel quite young! Keep up the good work on your magazine. You are both very much appreciated by your readers in Gran Alacant. Best wishes. Vivien & Keith Heywood.
