Gran Alacant Advertiser July 2024

Gran Alacant Advertiser continues to bring you all the local NEWS including information from the local Town Hall representative. Working for the local community since January 2005.

If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like to ask our councillors, please email on info@granalacantadvertiser.com

Hi Lou, we know the perpetrators of the awful graffiti at the entrance to GA were caught and fined, however some genius has decided to erect a second ‘fence’ which has now similarly been graffitied.

We need to know:

1. Who is responsible for the erection of the fences?

2. Who is responsible for their upkeep?

3 Who requested them? And for what reason?

We all, as residents of an urbanization we were once proud of, are now embarrassed to live in a ghetto. Irrespective of ownership, the council's job is to maintain the quality of life for its residents. These need to be removed now, either by repainting or total removal.

Kind Regards, Terry

Q: GRAFFITI

Following the overwhelming success of the installation of the set of panels along

the N332 to encourage local street artists to display their work, I am delighted to see that a newly installed set of panels are being utilised just as well.

We hope that this continues to generate funds in fines for the local council.

Cheers Steve

A: Oscar Valenzuela

The fences were installed by a building company in compliance with legal regulations due to the houses' proximity to the road. Repainting the fences isn't a viable solution as they cannot be monitored by police at all times.

We are exploring a new initiative to invite graffiti artists to create murals depicting scenes from around Gran Alacant, such as the beach and skywalk. This project is in its early stages, and we need more time to develop it. We recognise the impact on local residents - thank you for your patience.

Q: Mobile coverage

Hello. I live in Novamar and wonder if there is any news regarding mobile coverage?

Greetings, Erik

A: Oscar Valenzuela

This is a very difficult problem as the telephone companies are private companies. We can ask them but not oblige them to put up a mast. The public spaces we have available for masts are not suitable and we are trying to find a solution.

Q: Graffiti

A VERY RUBBISH PROBLEM

Last month we received a large number of messages from local residents concerned about the new replacement bins across Gran Alacant

Q: New Bins

Dear Oscar, as you can see the new bins are considerably smaller. Surely we should have more bins to make up for the reduction in bin capacity?

This is by Unide in Avda. Escandanavia but it is the same in many areas of GA. Kind Regards, Stella

Q: Bins at Altomar 2

Hello Lou, I live in Altomar 2 opposite the new temporary school/old market.

The refuse bins are in the process of being replaced and they were situated on the old market site, however the new bins have started to arrive and are being placed on the road in front of the previous position.

This is going to reduce parking for the residents/mums doing drop off for the school run and also cause delays when the bins are being emptied as the road is single lane at that point due to parking on both sides of the road.

Would you please contact the authorities to whom it concerns to get them moved back to the original site.

Thank you, Malcolm

Q: Bins on Calle Monte de Santa Polo

Good afternoon. I decided to go for a walk, also to get rid of my rubbish, got to the top of the hill and the smell was disgusting. Why on earth have they taken the bins off off the carpark?

Surely this is unhealthy for the people that have to live opposite?

Think about the buses that are bringing the kids from school - is that not a hazard? There is room back up the road where its wider with less of a problem to neighbours and is safer for school children... also there is loads of space on the market area so where has that come from?

Wendy and Graham

Q: Bins on Calle Monte de Santa Pola Hola, can you please contact Councillor Oscar Valenzuela regarding a problem with six waste bins moved from the open area opposite the Sports Stadium to the street, 8.5 metres from my property.

Right away we smelt the bins and my wife has health issues including COPD and cannot cope with bad smells and flies and the increase in noise, with workers and people coming and going to the bins. There was ample room where the bins were previously located. We already also find it difficult to park as the bins are now where we and other residents parked on the street.

We are vey concerned and things will only get worse in the summer high season. Can the bins not be moved to where they were before? Or even up the street where at least six bins were located at the junction entrance to Altomar 2, which is a wider road away from the residents.

Can the Councillor please look into this matter. The bins are too close to my property, causing problems and parking difficulties as outlined. Thank you in anticipation, Henry.

A: Oscar Valenzuela’s reply

I just spoke with Urbaser and the cleaning councillor. They tell me that there have been many complaints from neighbours about placing all the containers next to the Institute. Therefore, in the new cleaning contract they have included more bins along Calle Monte de Santa Pola for logistical reasons and easier cleaning.

Q: Update on bins on Calle Canarias

Hi Lou, I am presently at my house and the continuous smells and noise 18hrs a day is becoming a nuisance. For instance the bottle bank been emptied at 6.20am, cars pulling up continually dropping bottles into the bank creating very loud

noise of breaking glass late into the night. This is just not fair to all residents.

We also need traffic calming on our road as this is a residential street not a main road, the Santa Pola/Alicante buses zoom down at speed to obviously make up time for the new re-routing. I have lodged an official complaint with the Council through an advocacy who was very helpful her name is Susanna (see contact details below). If any resident in Calle Canarias or other areas affected have similar concerns she is very helpful. Regards, Christopher

Q: Update on bins on Calle Monte de Santa Pola

Hi Lou, just an update for you regarding the ‘bins’ issue at Altomar 2. Susanna, who you kindly mentioned to me, was very helpful with fully understanding the problems caused to Altomar 2 residents, by the relocation of the bins and was also a great help to me and other residents in assisting us to lodge our complaints with the Santa Pola Town Hall.

I recommend her to all who have a similar problem and need help with making an official complaint at the Town hall. We hope and trust that there will be a positive outcome and that the bins will be moved back to where they were, away from residents homes and parking spaces.

Thank you to you also, for your support and encouragement. Henry

If you have concerns about where you live and would like assistance with making an official complaint at the town hall, contact Susanna on: (+34) 641 34 28 47 or (+44) 7957 10 48 12

Q:  Calle Canarias

We are living in Calle Canarias and the traffic in the street has been increased significantly the last years. And now when the new bus routes have been changed we have many buses driving here, and sorry to say. The buses are driving way too fast like many other vehicles. We will very soon have an accident in the street. We need speed limit at 30km an hour and some road bumps. The sooner the better. Kind regards Jan

Q: Calle Canarias

Hi Lou just decided to drop you a line about the movement of the bins into a neutral

A Heartwarming Rescue in Masa Square

10th June 2024

zone ie crossroads junction not facing any homes. I am at home at the moment, the smells and noise 18hrs per day are becoming more of a nuisance as the days get busy - the bottle bin is the worst sound of breaking bottles going late into the night - its not fair. We also need traffic calming on our road, the buses bomb down it and I have seen and heard a few near misses in the last couple of days. Regards, Chris

A: Oscar Valenzuela’s

I will ask the local police to investigate and decide if it’s necessary to place speed restrictions and speed bumps on this street.

On a rainy Monday in Masa Square, a tiny kitten, now affectionately named Piper, found herself stuck in a pipe while seeking shelter. Despite efforts from the community, including the police and fire brigade, Piper remained trapped until Tuesday evening. Attempts to coax her out even involved reaching shoulder-deep into the drains.

Finally, around 6:30pm, a compassionate individual managed to rescue Piper by lowering a jumper into the hole, allowing the frightened kitten to cling on and be pulled to safety. Distressed and bedraggled, Piper was taken to the vets in Masa Square, where she was found to be healthy and flea-free, though still too scared to relieve herself.

ASPETGA Santa Pola Gran Alacant and GALS PALS have supported local vets in spaying and neutering cats to control the population. With Piper's story, they hope to raise awareness and funds for ongoing efforts. After just a few days, Piper, now also called Billie, was adopted by Daniel Williams, giving her a loving forever home.

Meet Piper!

The focus has now shifted to capturing the remaining kittens and an unneutered cat in Masa Square to prevent more unwanted litters. Thanks to the donations and support from the community, Piper's future is bright. However, the work continues. There are still animals in need, like a 13-year-old dog seeking a foster home after its owner passed away, and a kitten awaiting adoption after being abandoned in the trash.

A big thank you to Jane Pugh, Sandra de Frutos, Maria, Leti and Daniel Williams for the support and foster care and to each and every person who donated towards Piper.

If you would like to learn more about how to get involved or are interested in adopting an animal in need, please get in touch with Jane Pugh on +44 7814 245744.

TWO NEW PATROL CARS FOR LOCAL SANTA POLA POLICE

The Department of Public Safety has acquired two new hybrid, automatic vehicles equipped with defibrillators, first aid kits, fire extinguishers, and other police gear, at a cost of 86,000 euros.

On June 7th, 2024, the Councillor for Public Safety, Ana Blasco, introduced the two new patrol cars that will join the fleet of the Local Police. The vehicles, two Renault Arkana hybrids, are fully equipped with defibrillators, first aid kits, fire extinguishers, and various technical elements to facilitate the officers' work.

"The government's intention has been to renew and expand the fleet of Local Police vehicles. We already have five new vehicles, and we have completed

the specifications for acquiring two more cars. The 2024 budget includes a leasing contract to incorporate additional patrol vehicles," Blasco explained.

"Our goal is to provide our officers with the best and most effective tools to ensure they can perform their duties as safely and efficiently as possible, which will lead to better service for our citizens. This is just another step in our ongoing investments to modernize the tools available to our Local Police, who deserve the best resources to protect the safety of Santa Pola's residents," Blasco added.

ROAD IMPROVEMENT PLANS FOR FLOOD PREVENTION

Santa Pola City Council has allocated funds in the 2024 budget to construct drainage recesses along Avenida del Carabassí in Gran Alacant. These improvements aim to prevent flooding during heavy rain, ensuring smoother traffic flow and enhancing local mobility.

NEW SIDEWALKS FOR AVENIDA DE NORUEGA IN GA

The municipal budgets foresee an investment of around €105,000 to complete the sidewalks on this important road in Gran Alacant this year.

NEW AGREEMENT TO SELL COMBINED TICKETS FOR TRAVEL TO SANTA POLA AND GA

The private high-speed train operator iryo and the bus company Vectalia have reached an agreement for the marketing of combined tickets, which will allow travelers to purchase train and bus tickets to travel to Santa Pola and Gran Alacant.

iryo has presented new connections that allow its passengers to expand their travel possibilities and reach more than 50 tourist destinations and has launched the second phase of its multimodal project 'iryo Conecta', as indicated by Vectalia in a statement.

The alliance with Vectalia is part of its line of action 'Conecta Bus', through which iryo will approach cities on the coast of Alicante, such as Santa Pola and Gran Alacant. Likewise, during the summer additional options will be enabled towards the interior of the Alicante province.

In this way, the operator will take travelers beyond the train stations, using stops enabled in their vicinity, "thus minimizing passenger travel times to increase their comfort."

SANTA POLA CITY COUNCIL RECOGNIZED FOR TRANSPARENCY

Santa Pola City Council has been honored for transparency by CEU UCH Governance, Transparency, and CSR Observatory.

It is among only seven councils and three Provincial Councils in the Valencian

Community to receive the Infoparticipa Stamp for 2023. Vice Mayor José Pedro Martínez accepted the award, emphasizing the council's commitment to enhancing transparency and citizen participation.

SANTA POLA HOSTS ELECTRONIC TUNA TAGGING EVENT

The Scientific Angler Tagging Tour returned to Santa Pola Nautical Club in June, aiming to tag tunas with electronic devices to track their migratory patterns and promote collaboration between scientists and fishermen. Organized by the French Institute of Marine Research (IFREMER), this event saw recreational fishermen from across Spain participating.

Similar to previous campaigns, the data obtained expands knowledge about the migratory behavior and distribution of this species that is fundamental for marine ecosystems. With the active participation of twenty-five boats and more than one hundred fishermen, electronic tags were implanted in thirty-five tuna.

Pascual Orts, president of the Santa Pola Nautical Club, highlighted the scientific and educational significance of the event. Frederic Valls from Scientific Angler emphasized the importance of involving fishermen and the community. The event includes conferences, courses, and participatory activities, along with a plastic collection initiative.

Councillor Nely Baile and Mayor Loreto Serrano expressed pride in hosting the event, showcasing the positive impact of combining sport and science to study marine life.

BRITISH PASSENGER ARRESTED AFTER MID-FLIGHT INCIDENT

A 28-year-old British man was arrested at Alicante-Elche airport at the end of May after causing a major disturbance on an easyJet flight from Gatwick.

The passenger, identified as Luke A., boarded the plane in a drunken state, and his behavior deteriorated as the flight progressed leading to confrontations with passengers and attempts to strike the cabin crew. The British man then dangerously tried to open a cabin door and access the cockpit.

The easyJet captain alerted the Alicante-Elche control tower about the unruly passenger, ensuring that authorities were prepared upon landing. Once the plane touched down, the Guardia Civil arrested the man.

This incident highlights a growing concern at Alicante-Elche airport, which recorded the second-highest number of passenger conflicts in Spain last year, with 184 reported cases.

According to airport operator Aena, the typical profile of disruptive passengers is often British nationals who have consumed excessive amounts of alcohol.

WALK FOR LIFE RAISES 3970€ IN TOTAL!

You may remember in last month's issue that the annual sponsored "Walk for Life" on behalf of Bruised but not Broken cancer care raised more than €1,640 on the day of the walk.

We are delighted to announce that the grand total raised from donations and sponsors is 3970€!

Thank you to everyone who supported this year's event - all the money raised will help to provide financial, practical and emotional support, along with nutritional information to anyone affected by cancer. The charity prides itself on providing help tailored to the individuals or families needs. Anyone regardless of nationality, colour or creed can approach the charity for help.

We do not give to cancer research as we prefer to give our funds, provided by the generous support of the local people, directly to the people who need it, when they need it.

FATALITIES ON ARENALES DEL SOL BEACH

On the 10th June at 1:15pm the Emergency Information and Coordination Center was alerted about an unconscious man and woman that had been pulled out of the water on the Arenales del Sol beach.

The CICU has mobilized a SAMU unit and a Basic Life Support unit. Until the arrival of the emergency services, members of the beach lifeguard service have performed basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the bathers.

Once there, the SAMU medical team and the SVB health team have continued with advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other recovery techniques, but there has been no response and they have confirmed the death of the man, aged 66, and the woman, aged 64. years.

TIPS TO STAY SAFE ON THE BEACH THIS SUMMER

1. Stay safe in the sun Apply high-SPF sunscreen, wear a hat and sunglasses, and stay hydrated.

2. Observe lifeguard & flag signals Follow lifeguard instructions. The color-coded flag system indicates the safety of the water - green for safe, yellow for caution, red or black for danger (do not enter/ swim).

3. Watch for marine life & currents Avoid strong currents and maintain a safe distance from marine creatures such as jelly fish. If stung, seek assistance from lifeguards immediately.

A very interesting read My Recommended Book of the Month

Remarkable Creatures

In the early 19th Century a windswept beach along the English coast brims with fossils for those with the eye!

From the moment she is struck by lightening as a baby, it is clear that Mary Anning is marked for greatness. When she uncovers unknown dinosaur fossils in the cliffs near her home in Lyme Regis, she sets the scientific world alight, challenging ideas about the world’s creation and stimulating debate over our origins.

In an arena dominated by men, Mary is soon reduced to a serving role, facing prejudice from the academic community, vicious gossip from neighbours and the heartbreak of forbidden love.

Book of the month by Beth JOIN OUR CLUB

She finds an unlikely champion in prickly Elizabeth Philpott: unmarried, middle-aged and middle-class, and a fellow fossil enthusiast.

Tracy Chevalier has written a fascinating novel recording these facts of how one woman’s gift transcends class and gender to lead some of the most important discoveries of their time. Above all, it is a revealing portrait of the intricate and resilient nature of female friendship.

Beth worked as a Qualified Librarian in Aberdeen for 20 years. She loves reading and delights in finding exciting new authors as well as reverting back to favourite writers of all genres. Beth has lived in Gran Alacant for the last 15 years.

Next Book Club Meeting is Wednesday 31st July at 2pm, Skipper Bar - MASA Square. We meet up once a month, discuss the books we are reading now and suggest new ones.

Anyone interested in joining us or looking for more information please contact Beth on Whatsapp +44 7853 363060

Last month, the Gran Alacant Cleanup group gathered on Avenida de Mediterraneo near Sueno Azul for their latest litter-picking meetup. The group spread out along the stretch of the road, collecting litter for an hour. Some even took on the challenge of descending the steep hill to clear the more difficult, dirty areas beside the road!

Despite the intense heat, the group’s efforts made a noticeable difference in the area. A big thank you to all of our volunteers once again for their time and effort!

With summer temperatures rising, the group will be taking a break and cleanup events will recommence in September.

In the meantime, we encourage everyone to help keep Gran Alacant tidy - if you do, be sure to send a photo of your efforts along with your name to be featured in next month's issue!

Remember to stay safe in the sun and stay tuned for our next events in the autumn!

LET'S KEEP GRAN ALACANT TIDY!

BUSINESS INTERVIEW

ABOUT AT HOME INMOBILIARIA

“We do everything to help our clients buy a house. We help them open a bank account, get a NIE number, obtain all the necessary paperwork to apply for a mortgage, take them to the notary, translate deeds, pay taxes and register the deeds at the land registry.

We are with our clients every step of the way to make sure everything runs smoothly.“

WHAT DO YOU SPECIALISE IN

“The difference between us and other estate agents is our after sales service, which we offer completely FREE. Our clients can leave the keys to their property with us. If they need to arrange cleaners we can give them access, if something breaks we can help them find the appropriate tradesmen and give them access, if they need furniture delivered and they are out of the country then we can be there for them.

All this is not business for us, but is a way to make life easier for our clients. Having this service, especially when you are not in the country, gives our clients peace of mind. If life is easy, you enjoy your property more and you will recommend Gran Alacant to your friends and family.”

DREAM JOB

”From the age of 14 I used to stop at the windows of estate agents and look at all beautiful properties. That was over 30 years ago when we didn´t have any internet or access to all the information we have today. I loved buying magazines about interior design and loved looking at properties so I knew my job would be in that field.

My ambition was never to make lots of money, I was more interested in the opportunity of viewing many beautiful homes. I did think about becoming an Interior Designer, but my drawing skills were not great and we didn’t have the technology back then that we do today.

After I finished my studies I decided to go to England to learn to speak the language. I went to Colchester to work as an au pair and to practise my English. This worked really well for me as the house I was living in was a completely renovated old farm property. I remember telling my mum ’this house is like the ones I see in the magazines.’ It was a wonderful experience and like a dream for me.

When I returned from the UK, in 1998, I left my CV at Victoria Estate Agent who were about to open their office in Gran Alacant. They gave me the job and I worked for them for 10 years. I learnt a lot from Jose Luis and Fiona, they taught me so much. They were, and still are, like a second family to me. Since then, with the exception of 2 years that I took to look after my second daughter, I have been working as an Estate Agent.”

BEST THING ABOUT YOUR JOB

”I enjoy watching our clients integrate into their new life in GA. I love seeing them enjoying events, fiestas, festivities and most of all the lifestyle. I also enjoy meeting people from different parts of the world and how different nationalities have different ways of styling their homes. I can often tell where a client comes from just by looking at the interior design of their house.

I always say our clients are the best and it is true. All our clients are nice people, they make their houses look great and they all integrate well into the Spanish way of life.”

CHALLENGING PART OF YOUR JOB

”The most challenging thing about our job is finding the right property for our clients. We are all suffering from a lack of available properties so it is a challenge to find the right one because there are not many for sale.

When a client comes to our office the most important thing we do is listen to what they want. To purchase a house is one of the most important decisions people make in their lives, so it must be right. I always ask the client to tell me what their ideal type of property is. This is very important. As soon as they start talking and telling us what they want, we can start thinking about which urbanization and type of property is the best for them. When you sell a house, you can´t sell the house you want to the client, you must find the house that client is looking for. It’s as simple as that.”

WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES

”I still buy my monthly magazine about interior design like I used to when I was 14. I still enjoy reading and learning about all the new interior design styles.

I have 3 children, 2 of them are teenagers, so I always say that in the evening I become a taxi driver taking my children to all their after school activities. This keeps me very busy. I arrange activities with my 3 kids. That is my favourite plan.

Life is too short and it’s important to enjoy the little things in life.”

THE SECRETS OF A LONG LIFE

AN INTERVEW WITH FRANÇOISE

Last month we had the pleasure of sitting down with Lallemand Françoise Roberte Madeleine, a vibrant 91-year-old resident of Gran Alacant. Born on May 3, 1933, in Bourgogne, France, Françoise has been living in Spain since 1999, spending 23 years in Elche and the last six months in Santa Pola.

Why did you move to Spain?

"After my divorce in France, I decided to join my son in Spain for the good weather, which is beneficial for my health. I am a pro-European person. I believe in a great Europe where people can live together in peace. When I was seven years old, my parents and I fled from our village to escape the German army. It was a tough period, but now I am proud to have friends from the whole European community."

Recently, you received a letter of congratulations from Elche Council. How did that feel?

"Yes, it was for my 91st birthday. It was a complete surprise to receive this letter from the Mayor."

How do you stay fit, healthy, and younglooking?

"Sadly, I have lost many friends over the years, but I moved to Gran Alacant to be closer to my son and granddaughters, whom I visit nearly every day. I enjoy my quality of life here; I have a good routine every day. I start with breakfast in a local cafeteria, then visit my family. I like making an effort to look good and still enjoy buying nice clothes despite my age."

Do you have any tips on staying young?

"Stay natural. Avoid alcohol, although I do have the occasional glass of red wine with some French cheese! Socialise and dance. I go to El Altet on Sunday evenings to dance and meet new people at the Hogar del Pensionista."

What is your diet like?

"Every morning, I have black grapes, integral bread with seeds, and a 'special' plant-based potion: lino or bio olive oil, honey, blueberries, marmalade, and lemon juice. After that, I walk to the GA centre to get my tea around 11am with a small piece of apple pie at the cafeteria."

If you would like to share your secrets to a longer life or tips on staying fit and healthy, please send us an email at: info@granalacantadvertiser.com. We would love to hear from you!

FROM CARRÍCOLA WITH LOVE: SUSTAINABILITY IN ACTION

A couple of months ago a Spanish friend recommended us to visit the town of Carrícola in the province of Valencia, less than an hour by car from Gran Alacant. His recommendation was inspired by the pioneering organic farming that has been taking place in the town as part of a sustainability initiative over the past 40 years. Intrigued by his description of the town as a hub of regenerative agriculture and progressive social projects we organised a family trip to see for ourselves. We discovered a community with both a fascinating current life as well as a deeper history going back to the mediaeval history of our area.

The town lies at the foot of spectacular cliffs crowned by a defensive tower built in the islamic period as part of the system of defences designed to protect the area against the encroaching forces of the christian reconquest. Following the capture of the tower by christian forces in 1270 the area was settled by a christian

population and the current town grew up. However, the ancient islamic history of the area is discernible in the surviving irrigation systems that have been restored and form an enchanting feature of the lower part of the town. There are signed walking trails which allow one to explore this extraordinary surviving relic from Spain’s early mediaeval history. We had our picnic sitting under trees beside a stunning stone aqueduct dating back to the 12th century. We later drove up the soaring cliffs behind the town to visit the tower now known as Carrícola castle which in reality is a distinctive islamic square form fortress. The views offered from this site are breathtaking and explain the tower’s commanding location.

The town’s recent journey into organic farming and “experiential tourism” is no less interesting than its ancient history. From the 1950s onwards the population declined severely as people left the land to move to cities for work and a better life. The future looked bleak with Carrícola destined to join Spain’s other “empty villages”. However rescue came in the form of a French company who bought the town’s orange production on condition that it turned organic. From that point in

the 1980s the town became a pioneer in organic agriculture. Over the last 40 years the town and its citizens have taken a path that has included the development of organic smallholdings, restoration of nature, ecotourism and nature themed arts projects.

The town’s population has grown and now includes new inhabitants drawn by the opportunity to live and work in a community committed to developing a sustainable future that respects nature. Much of Spain’s countryside is now dominated by industrial agriculture with widespread use of plastic sheeting, harsh chemicals and intensive livestock rearing. While such techniques have greatly increased food production, the long term sustainability of such a model is increasingly questioned as the cumulative effects of degraded soil, contaminated water courses and poisoned wildlife become clear. Communities like Carrícola offer opportunities to challenge industrial agriculture’s orthodoxies and to develop more balanced ways to grow our food without destroying the natural world. Whilst we probably cannot feed the world without large-scale farming, it is right to ask if we need to damage the natural world so much to put food on our plates; especially at a time when we now throw away so much of the food we produce.

A visit to the town can include nature trails, dining on local produce and visits to heritage sites such as the castle and mediaeval irrigation systems. Yet the most compelling feature of the town is its overall atmosphere of optimistic striving for a

better, more sustainable future. Carrícola has developed organic waste collection and local water recycling systems. On the day we visited the local Eco Park team were making their weekly visit to the town. A clever mobile wagon was pitched in the town car park taking in all types of items and materials for safe disposal and recycling. Anyone who has struggled to conveniently dispose of furniture, electrical goods and even simple batteries in Gran Alacant will understand our envious longing for such a service in our own community. Perhaps we are expecting too much, as even though rubbish bins have finally been replaced, the brown waste bins for organic matter have once again been forgotten. How is it possible that in the year 2024, we still don't have these essential bins?

As our own community approaches its 40th birthday, perhaps those who administer our public services in Gran Alacant can learn from the wisdom and experience of much more ancient towns such as Carrícola, whose inhabitants have a longer perspective. We probably cannot yet hope to match their standards but some improvement and new ideas would be welcome!

The cost is €10 per month which covers the buying of the music and the printing of the lyrics. Enthusiasm is more important than ability so either pop along to see us or join our FB group:

WERE MY ANCESTORS A SHAR-PEI AND AN ALASKAN MALAMUTE? YOU’LL NEVER KNOW...

We have written several times about the importance of congenital and heritable disorders in pets. As a matter of fact there are some diseases such as Shar-Pei Recurrent Fever Syndrome which are suffered by certain breeds almost exclusively. Knowing well all breed predispositions to diseases is a very powerful diagnosis tool. In some cases, predispositions are referred to a specific breed, and in some other cases, to a group of breeds (hip dysplasia in shepherd dogs).

Dog genome was sequenced 20 years ago, and since then we have learned a lot about their genetic diseases, and we have more and more resources for diagnosis and even prevention of these pathologies.

For genetic testing, a blood sample or even a swab from mouth membranes (same as CSI forensics) is required, so, initially, anyone can take the specimen at home, send it to the lab, and have the results in a few weeks.

But, why do I need to know about my dog’s DNA? Basically, for two reasons:

• In order to confirm if it’s a pure breed dog, in case we want it to contest in a show, or maybe we have paid a lot of money for it.

• To know if it carries a “dangerous” gene, such as hip dysplasia, any pharmacological hypersensitivity, retinal atrophy, etc.

In most cases, an experienced Vet can find out very accurately which breed the animal is, but considering there are more than 300 officially approved dog breeds, there are millions of possible combinations. Anyway, there are owners who want to know exactly which percentage of Mastiff or Labrador (for example) their dog has. Well, there

are lots of websites where you can send a swab from your dog for performing a breed genetic diagnosis.

So far, so good. But the thing is “knowing your pet’s genetics”, has become a billiondollar business, and there are more and more labs available. But, are they reliable? An article in Nature Magazine says textually: “it’s too easy for those businesses to sell false hope”.

A Vet from Harvard Bioethics Centre PhD Lisa Moses says it’s difficult to know how reliable they are, since they are not obliged to reveal their methodology. Dr Moses says Vets should NOT use that direct from-owner-to-lab genetic tests for taking medical decisions.

Some weeks ago WBZ News Channel from CBS performed an investigation about those labs, consisting of the columnist Christina Hager sending a specimen... from herself to 3 different labs. At least two of them were honest and reported “not enough dog DNA for performing the test”, but in the third one opinion, the columnist was “40% Alaskan Malamute, 35% Shar Pei and 25% Labrador”. Not too bad...

A similar experiment was made by a Canadian public TV channel. According to the results, a Great Dane was diagnosed as a Chihuahua, and the columnist himself had Beagle ancestors. Dear parents, we have to talk. Are you sure you didn’t adopt me??

Some other labs oblige you to, apart from the specimen, send a picture of the dog (LOL). Of course, sending an intentionally wrong picture implied hilarious results... So, the conclusion must be to consider all these dog DNA tests just as a business, nothing else.

GA MEN’S WALKING FOOTBALL

Usually Walking Football takes a break for the month of July as the facilities are used to run clubs for young people. At the time of writing, this has not been confirmed, so keep an eye on the Facebook posts or Whatsapp messages to keep up to date (or contact me directly).

The kick off time has been brought forward to avoid the hottest part of the day so note that the new time is 10.00 am. Please arrive 10-15 minutes prior to the kick off time to allow for teams to be picked and a prompt start. As stated, information will be sent via the Whatsapp group and Facebook page should there be any changes in times.

GA SOCIAL CYCLISTS

There is a vibrant group of social cyclists in Gran Alacant who meet up outside of Molly Malones most days of the week at around 10:00am.

We ride hybrid and off road bikes, are of varying ages, fitness levels and both sexes and usually cycle the rural roads and paths

around Gran Alacant, Santa Pola and Elche which means 12 – 25 miles per ride.

Fitter, stronger cyclists can opt to take different routes but, we always meet up at a designated stop for a coffee, and importantly, a natter. Sometimes the group is just two cyclists, whilst other times it can be as many as 10-12 and as a testament to the group, in the years we have been meeting, many strong friendships have been formed.

As we don’t all live in Gran Alacant we communicate via a Whatsapp Group so it is best to check on the Whatsapp group who is around and who is going out on any particular day.

If you want to join us please contact us on Whatsapp 00353 / 87 991 6020

One Year On...

May 2023 saw the GA Advertiser publicising a taster session for the newly established Women’s Walking Football Group in Gran Alacant. The session was attended by a handful of women who were merely curious to find out what it was all about. Supported by the Men’s team in its initial stages, the group managed to establish itself on the GA community sports agenda and now boasts a squad of 25 members with more coming on board every week.

An article promoting the session was spotted by the production company responsible for the Channel 5 series “Bargain Loving Brits in the Sun” resulting in the group being filmed for an episode to be screened soon.

Organiser Julie Broderick says, “it was very enjoyable spending the day with the film crew and hopefully once the programme is aired more women will come along to join in the fun.”

In July, the new astroturf pitch at the leisure centre became available to the women. Julie states (jokingly) “its softer to land on than the concrete in the sports hall. We are grateful for the opportunity to use such a fabulous pitch – it makes us look good!”

Members of the group originate from many different countries – England, Scotland, Ireland, Argentina, Australia, Belgium, and Germany and ages range from 52 right through to 77!

Coach James Fraser says “It is a pleasure to be a part of the development of Women’s Walking Football here in Gran Alacant. We are encouraging women no matter what their fitness levels or ability to come along and give it a go. We aim to provide a safe fun environment where everyone is made to feel welcome.”

More recently the group have managed to secure sponsorship and support from Philippe Blache and the team at GAHomeFinders – a leading Estate Agency in Gran Alacant and the only A.P.I. registered agency in the area since 2007. Philippe says, “As a community resource, we are proud to be associated with the development of Womens Walking Football in the area and wish them every success in their endeavours.”

This maiden year has been a busy and educational one for the women’s group, but they are not resting on their laurels. Plans for the forthcoming months involve a potential charity fund raising match against the Gran Alacant Men’s Walking Football team and further promotional drives to boost numbers.

If reading the above has not convinced you to turn up at a session and try it, read below what members say about their experiences :

“Joined this great bunch of girls reluctantly last November, knowing very little about football and was an overnight convert. Fun, good exercise and made to feel so welcome. I still don’t know a lot about football, but I love the weekly sessions when I’m here.” (YD)

"Having never kicked a football in my life and not knowing a thing about it, I was asked by a friend to “give it a go.” I did and boy what fun! I now play every time I’m in Spain and also joined a team in the UK. I’m smitten” (DC)

"I started playing Walking Football at the age of 60 having never kicked a ball in my life! Its great exercise and most importantly we have a great laugh.” (JB)

SUCCESS!

For

Local Athletes in Spanish Paddle Surf Championships 2024

The 2024 Spanish Paddle Surf Championships have recently concluded, showcasing various paddle surf disciplines. In Melilla, the long-distance event saw Elite and under-18 riders tackling a 14 km course, while the under-16 participants raced over 6 km. Meanwhile, at Mera Beach in La Coruña, the thrilling 200-meter Beach Sprints and the beach race events were held. These fastpaced and visually captivating races allowed spectators to enjoy the entire competition from the shore without losing sight of the participants.

In both competitions, the Santa Pola team from Club Deportivo Parres competed with a large contingent of riders and brought home several medals. Notably, among them were Gran Alacant residents and brothers, Ruben and Sergio Cantoral, who performed admirably in their respective categories.

Rubén, at just 14 years old, made a remarkable comeback from a clavicle fracture in September. Competing in his new under-16 category, he triumphed in all three disciplines, showcasing not only his recovery but also his passion and determination to compete and win.

Sergio, participating for the first time in the Elite category (the highest level), achieved impressive results, finishing 5th in the long distance, 3rd in the beach race, and 2nd in sprints. Sergio, a former junior world champion in the technical discipline for 2022 and 2023, continues to be an inspiration to his brother and other club members.

These talented athletes enjoy paddle surf, a growing sport, in our picturesque setting, regularly training on the beaches of Arenales, Carabassí, and Santa Pola.

We would also like to highlight the invaluable opportunity provided by Club Deportivo Parres. Under the leadership of its director and founder, Daniel Parres, an international figure in water sports (windsurf, paddle surf, kitesurf), the club offers proximity, a high level of professionalism, and excellent facilities and equipment, enabling athletes to practice at the highest national and international levels.
