Hello everyone. Our front cover picture shows the celebrations of the PP Party’s re-election at the Santa Pola Town hall. What, you may ask, is the badge on the front cover. Both of us lived for over fifty years in Norfolk and supported our football club, Norwich City. The excitement of last month, seeing our team promoted to the Premier League, prompted us to include the club badge on our magazine. One of the Norwich City players will be at Ocean 11 at the Carabasi Complex in a Charity event on the weekend of June 4th - 5th. Now only being a few months from retirement, it really does come home to you, how times flies out here in the sunshine. Four years ago we reported on the local elections, and here we are doing it all over again. Winner of last months Prize Wordsearch was: Sabine Vermeulen
Have a good month. Sandra & Barry

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news, including that from our Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005. It is our perogative at the magazine, NOT to update this 2005 picture, as we all looked a great deal younger!!! Main news this month is the re-election of the PP Party at our Town Hall. We have pictures of the fiesta they provided to introduce themselves to us all, prior to the elections. We were then invited to attend at the Town Hall on the evening that the results were announced. We can now look forward to our close relationship with the Mayor Miquel Zaragoza and the Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, to continue bringing you all the coming news of plans for our lovely Urbanisation.
charge of the City council of Lorca to offer aid from Santa Pola and from the Murcian municipality they have the necessary architects and foremen who can make the technical evaluation of the buildings affected by the earthquake, so that the citizens can return as rapidly as possible to the houses that have not undergone structural damage.

editions front cover picture. The lady at the Florist at the GA Centre tells me it is a “Bahuinia” tree.
We had emails last month, asking the name of the tree on our May
We do now have a second Councillor on Gran Alacant. He is Paco, yes the Paco who many of you know from your visits to the health centre. His previous health centre job is to be taken over by somebody else. He will though, be based most of his time, at the GA Council Offices, so will still be on hand.
On the 12-May The Municipal Corporation of the City council of Santa Pola has approved in an extraordinary and urgent plenary session a series of measures for support to the city of Lorca, these measures have been approved unanimously by the three municipal groups PP, PSOE and Compromís. The mayor Miguel Zaragoza, has been in contact with people in

Two more events took place last month, with the proceeds going to worthy causes. We at the magazine were at both events, taking pictures and must say that we thoroughly enjoyed the GASP production. GASP Theatre recently presented 3 separate 1 act plays in the Life Resort on Gran Alacant. We were a little disappointed in the lack of attendance by the people of Gran Alacant, perhaps this is because we present the plays on days which are not suitable - ie Saturday and Sunday. Any feed back on preference for days to attend would be much appreciated email: gasptheatre@hotmail.co.uk It is rather sad that the attendance was so poor, especially on Saturday evening - the theatre group has invested a large sum of money (800â‚Ź) in building a 'permanent set' for use in the future and it would be a tragedy if the group folded due to lack of support. No decision has yet be taken on the play to be performed in the Casa de Cultura in Santa Pola in October and a final decision has yet to be taken on the days of the performance - however it will be during the week commencing 17th October. On a more positive note the feedback we received from people who attended was very good and I think an enjoyable evening was had by all.' David President GASP Theatre.

We at the magazine were at this event and thank M.A.B.S. for the text and some of the pictures to add to those pictures that we took. Thank you all you lovely people who braved the weather on Sunday the 24th of April to watch the gallant Terry O’shea do a deep sea dive for the legal registered Cancer Charity in Gran Alacant. M.A.B.S., with the help of Damon of Dive Academy in Santa Pola, Terry took to shark invested waters in search of mermaids, did he find any? well a rather wind swept ugly looking one as you can see by the photo. Dive Academy are a Santa Pola based diving club who will fully train you in the art of the wonders of the sea. Terry who had never taken to the sea other than swimming was trained by Dive Academy to do this very special dive for us. M.A.B.S. is a cancer charity who help people with Cancer in the G.A. area, and all money raised stays in G.A. for the people who need interpreters, equipment, transport and any other assistance which includes information on the Cancer they have. The money raised was 300 euros which goes into the M.A.B.S. bank account. All our volunteers drivers only get out of pocket expenses and no charge is made to the client. The M.A.B.S. show will be at the theatre in Santa Pola on the 14th 15th 16th of November. Thanks to Loretto and the council who are more than happy to help us, as we are a registered charity. To run a charity you must have a charity number. A nif number is not enougth and you must be registered with the charity board. Thank you all so much.

endeavouring to help cater for. The aim will be to go along and chat with others and also have a group of friends to go on outings etc. with. It can feel like being the odd one out when with couples so this is a chance to meet with others in similar situations. Therefore if you are in this category come along and please bring suggestions, together with any relevant details, for visits etc and please tell others you know of, who are also solos. Its ongoing success and direction will depend on those attending so come and make it happen. - SOCIALISING SOLOS. (Further info. tel: Linda 966182417) Loreto is going to give as much Town Hall help as possible to this new venture. You will see this month that we have a couple of pages of emails sent to us. We have talked them over with Loreto and have some answers.
Loreto has had talks with the Police and asking for them to be extra vigilent in these ares. There is a permanent Police presence either the Local Police or the Guardia Civil on GA, who unfortunately cannot be everywhere at once.
Loreto will talk with ALSA buses about the possibility of different routes, this company is a private bus company and does not come under our Town Hall, but she will do what she can. It is proposed for the future, that the Mayor will to meet up with Baile bus company, to get them to re route to areas asked for by the people of GA. If it helps the people here, but does not generate enough income for the bus company, the Town Hall will talk about subsidising it. At the moment Baile and Su bus companies run and look after their own routes as private

companies so the Mayor will try to get them together for talks. Talks will take place about extra buses for the Fiestas. The only awkward problem is, if the Town Hall ask the companies to provide these extra services, and very few people turn up to use it, they are unlikely to provide the service in the future. We hope to have a new timetable in this edition for the bus running to and from Elche Hospital and Gran Alacant.
The taxi problem rears its head again. Loreto will speak to them about running from Santa Pola before taking your fare.
The removal of the rubbish at Calle Malta will be sorted.
The positioning of the rubbish bins by the Life Route is becoming a bit of a nightmare. Everytime The Town Hall move the bins to suit one set of residents, the next people want them moved again. They moved them away from houses only to get more compaints. They are now going to move them to opposite a car park entrance and re locate one of the bins to an area where bins overflow.
The Town Hall are always looking for more non Spanish, who live on Gran Alacant, to join the PP Party.
BUS TIMETABLE GRAN ALACANT - ELCHE HOSPITAL We still have not been sent this time-table. If you would like one, email us, and when we get a copy we will email it to you. Pictures opposite, on page 9, include the festivities we were at, at the Town Hall, with the PP Party celebrating their re-election.
We were at the Town Hall on election night for the announcement of the result of the local elections. The picture above is of the earlier fiesta on Gran Alacant, where the P P Party introduced their line up of Councillors at the Town Hall. The pictures below, show the celebrations at the announcement of the result. The votes were, 8049 PP Party, 2945 PSOE Party. 1897 Others.

GRAN ALACANT SERVICES,
A doctor was addressing a large audience in Oxford ...
"The material we put into our stomachs should have killed most of us sitting here, years ago. Red meat is full of steroids and dye. Soft drinks corrode your stomach lining. Chinese food is loaded with MSG. High transfat diets can be disastrous and none of us realizes the long-term harm caused by the germs in our drinking water. But, there is one thing that is the most dangerous of all and most of us have, or will eat it. Can anyone here tell me what food it is that causes the most grief and suffering for years after eating it?" After several seconds of quiet, a 70-year-old man in the front row raised his hand, and softly said, "Wedding Cake"

Real-Estate Experts is a non-profit-making association, duly registered in the Ministry of Labour under number 4507, of real-estate professionals and businessmen. We work within the whole of the Spanish territory.
Our main concern is the defense of the honour in our profession, proving that this sector counts on good professionals on whom consumers can rely. In fact, all of the Real-Estate Experts are qualified to develop this activity (buying and selling/renting) and many of them judge expertly for courts and tribunals. Our professionals are subject to an ethic code apart from being obliged to underwrite a professional public liability insurance for a value of 600,000€.
Our aim is to dignify the real-estate sector and offer its best possible image as well as to serve our customers in the most professional way. Therefore, we have different agreements with several Consumer Associations, among which is that of the Valencian Region. Furthermore, we offer many courses and talks to our members, so that they can be up-to-date regarding the novelties in this sector.
To summarise, we try to group the best professionals together so that customers can always have the best service.

Genuine emails to us at the magazine Hey Barry & Sandra Just catching up on your Mag, after a return from U.K. I refer to page 10 of Aprils Mag, last but one paragraph re: 'breakins'. I live on Hollanda and we have had 'some' break-ins recently, even to a womanliving on her own. I have observed that there is a LACK OF POLICE PRESENTS around our side of the urbanisation, as compared to last year. Could you bring this subject up at your next meeting with Loreto please. Again, thank you both for a excellent informative Mag, and keep up the really good work that you both do. Take care and kind regards Ken & Jackie Moore -------------------------------Hi Barry It's brilliant that SuBus are coming to Gran Alacant going to Elche!! Is there any chance of talks with Alsa Buses to stop at Gran Alacant to avoid changing buses in Santa Pola as the timetable does not coincide and you can spend a long time awaiting connections. It would be great for residents and visitors to be able to visit Guardamar, Torrevieja and even Cartegena, it would double the tourism in Gran Alacant for a proper bus service going places and put us on the map. Margaret -------------------------------Hi Barry Just a quick note, I don’t know if you can do anything in the June Advertiser, but on Page 20 of this month’s one, there is a letter from Ben where he mentions Alicante Holiday Rentals being at the Awards night, when as you know, it was in fact us Alicante Holiday Villas. Could you therefore do an amendment in the June issue as Alicante Holiday Rentals are a different company. Many thanks Kind regards Mark -----------------------Hola Barry/Sandra Firstly I would to thank you for negotiating with the Su bus so that we can have our much needed hospital buses. Two months ago my husband was in the Elche hospital for a couple of short periods totaling over a week. In the morning the Baile bus I was on from Gran Alacant was arriving in Santa Pola as the Elche bus was pulling out and also the Torreveiga bus, so a few of us were left stranded for an nearly an hour. When the Elche bus did arrive it doesn't go direct to the hospital so you have to walk through a housing estate which isn't very pleasant then across a park. When it was raining it was quiet slippery. When I came back to Santa Pola I often had to get a taxi as the last Santa Pola bus 9 p.m and 8 p.m on a Sunday. Altogether it about 3 hours round trip to go there and come back because of bad connections. On the one occasion I did get the connection it saved a lot of time and stress. These hospital buses direct to Elche will make a difference. Although some people have cars, they might not always want to use them. We have been in Spain for five years now and have watched this area develop and they are gradually adding on extra buses which is great, but there are still the Fiestas which start late and there are no late buses. On Good Friday the Easter parade was still coming up the street when the last bus went so you either have to come away or get a Taxi. I remember last year you said that you were going to talk to Baile about it. Do you know if they are putting on extra buses for the September fiestas? The other matter you might be able to help us on is on the bus timetable the buses with the red line on them that go to direct to El Eltet and not around Gran Alacant we were told we could use them and get off at the Repsol garage and now more recently outside Consum. Then the other Saturday we tried to get on it from Santa Pola and was told no we couldn't use it. I think the confusion is with the drivers some are letting us on and others are saying no. There used to be notices on the bus shelters saying we could use it for this end of Gran Alacant. Also we have used it from Alcante recently. If possible could Loreto please ring Baile up to clarify the situation. It would help especially now it is getting busy again and they were cramming us on the bus. It was standing room only. When it is Summer as we are the last stop before Santa Pola sometimes you can't get on especially on a Saturday unless you get get the early buses and they are also getting busier. If that bus always came round past Consum and turned round the roundabout it would help the situation. Thank you for help. The information you provide is very useful. Angela

Dear Barry/ Sandra I am writing to you in order that you might want to pass on the following information to warn people to be extra vigilant around the Alicante harbour area. A few weeks ago our neighbors and their friends were sitting on the Alicante harbour. One of the ladies had her handbag next to her on the bench. Her husband got up to look around, then a few moments later a lad just came past where she was sitting and grabbed her bag and run up the promenade. She gave chase screaming at him. She was lucky he dropped the bag and nothing was taken. Yesterday I went down the harbour for little while. There was a women on the next bench to me, she got up to go to the rubbish bin which was only a few feet away. This young lad just ran over to the bench and lifted her bag and then ran towards the underground car park. She was screaming hysterically. Luckily another two lads were coming over the other side of the road. I got one of them to call the police. Others chased him down the car park and he dropped the bag. She got it back without loosing anything. It shook her up. I don't know if it was the same person from the other incident. If sitting down there or over in the park it is best to make sure you have a tight hold on your bag. It is a shame as we have always enjoyed sitting down there when we visit Alicante, however is best anywhere open like that to make sure you keep your valuables secure and be vigilant. Hope this information is useful to you. Angela ----------------------------Hi Barry & Sandra ,maybe as well to warn people about the new G/A taxi service. My friend called the Taxi service on the number printed in your Magazine & the Taxi came from Santa Pola & were charged the extra for the taxi to come from Santa Pola.Surley this is not right they should have been told this when they ordered a taxi if there was not one available in G/A.Si if anyone does ring ask where the Taxi will come from! I emailed you last year regarding the area of land down Calle Malta & the land beyond there opposite our properties in the Perlas also you printed photos I took of how overgrown it had become over the last 4 yrs having not been kept a reasonable state by the counsil, also that people used it as a rubbish tip..I also emailed the speedy response from Loreto. She had the whole area scraped & it looked much better. But unfortunately the job wasn't complete, why? well all the over grown material that was scraped up complete with the rubbish was just put in several very large piles to rot.I was expecting the counsil to remove the rubbish but there it remains. What happens now? well people who are too bone idle to take their rubbish, including the rubbish they have trimmed off their trees & other garden rubbish, to the bins they just throw everything over the road increasing the size of the rubbish piles. Could you please in your next meeting with Loreto ask if these piles of rubbish can be removed. Some people in the area have had Rats causing problem including one house that was infested with them. Surely for health & safe all this rubbish should have been removed long ago .A job half done isn't worth doing in the first place. Thanks again for your great Magazine & the info within, best regards Bill --------------------------hi Barry & Sandra as a resident of the above (Don Pueblo) I would like to say how much I agree with all Mr Messina's coments, however I would like to add a couple of points. All of the business on the life resort use the refuse skips on Calle Monte for thier business waste, which I believe is against the law, I know of one none Spanish business owner (in GA) who has a Spanish criminal conviction for disposing of business waste in street skips, I mentioned this issue when I had a meeting with Ms Loreto about an other issue. There is a very good area outside the Montefaro urb between the entrance and exit on the public roads on Montrfaro side of the road, which would accomodate two skips easily, this area is allready lined off for this purpose, this would, allow a more even distrubtion of all our refuse in our area. The Prime Minister, David Cameron, has announced that he intends to make it more difficult to claim benefits. From next week, all the forms will be printed in English. --------------------------------------------------------------------------The other day I needed to go to the local NHS hospital but not wanting to sit there for 4 hours, I put on my blue jacket and pinned on a plastic ID card that I had made off the Internet onto the front of my jacket. When I went into the hospital, I noticed that 3/4 of the people got up and left. I guess they decided that they weren't that sick after all. Cut at least 3 hours off my waiting time. Here's the patch. Feel free to use it the next time you're in need of quicker emergency service.

Chester was found in the fields when he was just four weeks old. He has been with a couple who intended to adopt him but the lady is asthmatic and must let him go to a new home. He is house trained, obedient, good on a lead and very affectionate. He has had all inoculations.

Curly was found dodging cars on the N332 near to La Mata. He does not have good eyesight so it was amazing that he was not hit by a vehicle. He was in terrible condition with lumps on his tail and his body, and his eyes were almost closed due to dry eye syndrome. His poor condition we believe is probably due to an inadequate diet all his life. He has had surgery to remove the lumps and he has also been neutered. He is now in relatively good condition for a 6 year old Poodle/Airedale cross and he really enjoys life. His tail is always wagging. They were first seen four months ago as young puppies, four of them with their mother, by a Norwegian man when walking his dog near the river in Quesada. At the time he could not get near them. He phoned K9 yesterday to say that he saw them again on Friday, the mother is now not with them and the puppies looked in terrible condition, one has a bad limp. K9 volunteer Rikke who lives in Quesada was called and she went with the man on Saturday to rescue them. They managed to rescue three of them, unfortunately the fourth one dashed up a concrete drain pipe and would not come out. K9 went the following day with the Animal Rescue Vehicle to meet the Norwegian man to try and rescue the last one. Mel, the K9 volunteer travelled up the long concrete pipe but could not see to the end of the tube as the torch stopped working and was not able to find the last puppy. They are around 6 months old, possibly Pointer cross and there are 2 females and 1 male. They were full of ticks and fleas but physically ok and are available for adoption. These adorable little kittens are about six weeks old and are a real bundle of fun. They will be vaccinated by mid May. The one on the right is a girl and the other 3 are boys. They were found in the middle of the road in Redovan.

An e-mail flooded in to my inbox the other day (along with a message from a very nice chap in Nigeria who wanted to send me 6 million quid) asking about Flamingos, so I’m going further afield for this month’s article. You are unlikely to see these birds in the Clot itself (although they do occasionally fly over), but we have them almost on our doorstep at Santa Pola.
the water, they turn their beaks upside-down and rinse through the mud at the bottom, extracting the prawns and other small invertebrates, and the prawn’s colour gets into the plumage. That is why you can tell which ones are juveniles; younger Flamingos are a dirty white colour until they’ve had enough prawn cocktails to make the difference. Despite the fact that there are hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of Flamingos on the salt-pans at Santa Pola, they don’t usually breed there, and this is down to one major factor – human
I expect most of you will at some time have braved the notorious N332 heading towards Torrevieja and points south, and crossed the salt pans. Out of the corner of your eye (at least if you’re driving), you will have seen the statuesque Flamingos dotted around the lakes and wondered what these rather exotic-looking birds are doing there. In fact Flamingos are relatively common in Spain, and almost any large stretch of water will have at least a few of these birds present. Now if prawns weren’t pink, then Flamingos wouldn’t be pink either, because that is what they eat – I mean the Flamingos eat prawns and not vice versa – and prawns as you all know contain lots of beta-carotene; well if you didn’t know before, you do now. That is the reason for their peculiarly-shaped beaks (the Flamingos, not the prawns). With their heads beneath
disturbance. They don’t actually nest every year unlike most birds, and with a life expectancy of 30 years or more this isn’t crucial, but they do need privacy while breeding and nest on quieter lakes inland. The Spanish name is Flamenco Comun, which gives rise to some splendid arguments about whether the Spanish dance is named after the bird or not. Since the dance can be seen to represent the graceful movement of these birds there is some validity in it, although linguistic experts tell us that more likely definitions include the supposed Flemish origin of Flamenco music and costumes, or the Arabic “fellag mengu” or “peasants without land” although on this last one I don’t see the connection. And finally, why do Flamingos stand on one leg? The answer of course is that if they didn’t, they’d fall over. See you next month.

AMAZING, BUT TRUE (II): THE “LOST” MICROCHIP part two
CONTINUED FROM LAST MONTHS EDITION
We phoned Britannia Ferries in Santander with a simple question: “what can we do??”. They explained us in these cases they send the dog to a local Vet in order to re-scan the chip. Then we phoned Alicante Vet College, and they had no idea. Maybe an official certificate would work. We phoned our colleague in Santander, who, of course, was absolutely shocked. She apologized and said an official certificate plus the X-rays showing the microchip would be enough. So, just in case, we provided the owners: -an official certificate explaining everything. -a video showing how our scanner detects the microchip. -a picture of our scanner screen displaying the microchip number. -a complete description of our scanner, including trademark, model and serial number. -a complete telephone list of the practices in Santander. -and, of course, the X-rays. So, finally they were able to get into the UK and enjoy their holidays. This is what is called a mysterious case, which has been really expensive for the owners. What can be done in a case like this? Letʼs donʼt forget the microchip couldnʼt be detected by THREE officially approved scanners: one at the ferry plus two at Santander practice. And, are you ready for more? The owners flew to the UK without the dog a few days before they tried to get the ferry for the second time, they went to DEFRA for explaining them about their case, and DEFRA provided them… a microchip scanner, WHICH WAS UNABLE TO DETECT THE MICROCHIP!!! The matter with the X-rays they took in Santander is slightly different. We asked our colleague to email us their pictures, just to discover they were taken in a ventrodorsal projection (with the dog lying on his back). For that reason, the microchip was hidden by the vertebrae which made it impossible to detect. In order to minimize the odds of failure: -make sure the Vet scans the microchip several times. Probably they thought at Santander practice we hadnʼt really scanned the microchip, and for that reason they didnʼt do a proper radiological screening. In some cases, the Vet may not check the microchip because the animal is nervous or the owners are in a hurry… Remember there is normally a lot of money involved in the travel, so weʼd better not take a risk, no matter if it takes one hour, but the microchip MUST be detected and located, and the owner must be informed about its exact location. -having the microchip scanned in another practice, with a different scanner, may be useful. -have a complete telephone list of the practices of the town where you are embarking (Santander, Bilbao, Calais…). www.paginasamarillas.es -if the microchip cannot be read and it must be evidenced by X-ray, ask for a lateral one (with the dog lying on his side). If the microchip cannot be read in any way, but itʼs evidenced by X-ray, the animal can travel with an official certificate and then, when he arrives to its destination, the microchip must be removed and sent to the factory. Then, the factory sends back to the Vet a replica of the old microchip, with the same number. …and please, keep the passport updated. Liliana Aldeguer Cerdán & Sergio Reina Esteban.
