Hello everyone LOts in the mag this month, with more pages and we have increased our print run again. We would like to congratulate Sergio and Liliana on their 10th anniversary of their veterinary practice. They are the vets who write the column in our magazine. Remember you can read every edition online with page turning software, click the arrows and turn the pages!!!! What a busy month May was for us, with Molly Malones holding the “Fabulous Cabelleros” Show with a percentage of proceeds going to Mabs Cancer Charity. The 1st Boot Sale held outside the Medical Centre. The first Jukebox Promotions holding their “Broadway and Hollywood” music show at the Life Resort and the Gran Alacant Santa Pola Theatre Association presenting 2 comedy plays also at the Life Resort. We were at all the events and can say what brilliant nights they were, also with the boot sale, it was very pleasing to see so many stalls there for the first one. Please support all future events held on Gran Alacant as they are provided for the enjoyment of us all. Another thing happening on Gran Alacant is the amount of work being carried out all around the place, how nice everywhere will look when the work is complete, we are very lucky with everything that is being done on Gran Alacant when you read in the newspapers about the neglect other urbanisations have to put up with. Our Los Belgas Wordsearch winner was Sue Miguels. Our front cover is of the beautiful “Bahuinia” tree at the GA Centre.

Have a good month Sandra & Barry Our little dog from the front cover has hidden herself away in the magazine, can you find her? Last month she was on the dodgems

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news, including that from our Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005. It is our perogative at the magazine, NOT to update this 2005 picture, as we all looked a great deal younger!!! Plenty of pictures in this edition, of events that took place within the last month. These pictures and more, can be seen on our website at www.granalacantadvertiser.com Workmen everywhere on GA at the moment, pavements being dug up

and re laid, the new market area buzzing, and of course the complete revamp of the Mediterraneo road. It is great to see that where all the new pavements are being laid, the workmen are also filling in with paving, all of the untidy areas, as pictured. The stepped pavement in front of the Chinese, Banks and Bars will only be changed on the lower level, so the business owners will still have space for tables and chairs. Another tidying up operation is taking place on the Town Hall land in front of the Clot. More activity.

We have pictures in this issue from the MABS “Walk for Life” where money was raised for this Cancer cause. Jan Wright from MABS, sent us the following:“Thank goodness the weather changed for the better on Sunday morning, the sun shone and there was a slight breeze, just ideal for walking. Each year the numbers have grown and we were so pleased to see more than 40 people, men as well. It was a sea of Pink hats, skirts and balloons. A lot of people who were just walking by also took part or gave donations so we generated a lot of interest from the Spanish and English. Loreto our local Councillor organised the Police and Music for us and as always came down to support us. The Winners for the Best Pink outfit were Connie and Lisa who won Champagne and of course a Pink Geranium in a Pink Pot. We have raised 1,876 euros, plus, 903 euros has been raised by the Ladies Coffee Morning Group and the Monte Mar Bowls Club raised 100euros. Has anyone seen Beatrice and her family and the dog?! no we did find her she got lost in The Clot and took 2 hours to get out, we did phone her to check she was still alive and kicking as we cannot afford to lose any Translators!! Thank you to everyone who took

part and raised so much money for us. We also had Daphne who is 80 and in a wheelchair who was escorted round by one of our Translators. Also a lot of people walked round twice. Thank you to Spanish Inks too who did all our printing for us Another MABS fund raising event, this time at Molly Malones, where proprietors Terry, Linda, and staff provided the venue and a meal, which was followed by a wonderful show from Hat Trick Promotions who presented us with, Buddy Holly, Adele, Marc Bolan, Freddie Mercury, Cherry Kee, and the Beatles, all performed by the Three Caballeros.MABS tells us that they raised 249 euros on the Raffle and thank you so much for the 50 euros from the lady who was re united with her lost earring, (read the story further down in the news). The Caballeros generously donated 60euros to MABS and they would like to do another Show sometime in Gran Alacant. We thought they were excellent and very good entertainment On Saturday 5th May, at the GA Centre, was the third annual Bobbin Lace Making and Craft Exhibition of the Artesanas Gran Alacant. As usual they put on a beautiful display of both modern lace and items made by the group. Vivien Heywood showed her collection of antique baby bonnets and some traditional French coifs. Visitors enjoyed seeing such a variety of crafts and watched the lacemakers at work on their pillows. Once again the group would welcome anyone who is interested in learning, to make bobbin lace,

6

smocking, crochet, knitting, or needle lace embroidery, lessons are free. It is a friendly and sociable group of ladies who love to share their crafts. They meet at the Ayuntamiento Room, which is upstairs in the Life Resort. Monday 4.30 to 7.30pm and Friday 4.30 to 7.30pm just come along for a chat and see what we are making or telephone Vivien (English) 966 695 223 or Maria (Spanish) 966 699 705. The two big projects at the new market site and the revamped Mediterraneo are now well under way, as is the laying of new pavements between the school and the Carabasi Complex. We wonder why they could not put this rubbish IN the bin. Too much

trouble!!!!!!!!!! (pictured above) An email to us Just wondered if you had enough space, in order to warn people and to be very aware... in Mercadonna car park our friend was just going in to do some shopping and 2 women who spoke Spanish, normal height short brown hair and grey outfits on, approached her with a clip board and on the paper it said For the Deaf, she

7

tried to get rid of them but they were persistent so she got out her purse to give a euro, they thanked her and kissed her on both cheeks. When she came to pay for her shopping all her money had gone, unfortunately she had 500euros on her. She cannot believe they took it from literally under her nose. She was furious with herself, she is an older lady and she came to us in shock and she went down to the Santa Police to report it and she said they were very nice and very sympathetic and spoke English. In fact another friend who was there at the same time said he saw them and wondered what they were up to. So just to warn people and do report it. and now a nice story...... We received a telephone call at the magazine early one morning from a very fraught lady who had lost a very sentimental ear-ring. She had retraced her steps to no avail. She asked about printing a “missing” notice, but the next edition was 4 weeks away. We went onto one of the local forums and typed out an appeal for her. Lo and behold, a forum member answered saying that she had found an ear-ring, outside one of the banks in Gran Alacant. We put the two people together, they met up and handed the earring over to a very pleased lady, who wanted to give a reward to the finder, who refused, and then to us, who also refused. She asked us to donate 50 euro to a worthy cause, so that night were going to the local MABS fund raising event at Molly Malone, where we handed over the donation.

8

This is one sentence of the finders email to us:“The lady was absolutely overjoyed to have her earring back as it had great sentimental value for her, her tears of joy made us feel so good for the rest of the day”. MASA were due to start planting at the Park that they are building, whilst our magazine was at the printers, so will hopefully by now look very inviting. An email to us mentioned the extra mozzie biting. Loreto phoned those in charge and by the time you read this, Loreto will have met with people concerned to get some extra spray in the Santa Pola effected areas. Unfortunately the other side of the fence in the Clot belongs to Elche, so Santa Pola can do nothing about that. Another email to us mentioned all of the dust from the new market site. Loreto was due to have a meeting about the market in the coming week and would bring up this issue and ask the builders if they could use water to keep the dust down, so as not to effect the residents nearby. Again we mentioned the lack of action from the fountain at the roundabout near the school. There is a problem with the fountain mechanism which is being sorted. 16th June at the GA Commercial centre sees another type of Tapas day, where you are welcome to go and try the various dishes. There will be an extra reception person there during the summer time. Pictures in this issue of the fabulous show at the Life Resort, presented by Jukebox Promotions. Mr Voice “Andy Jones” and Fiona McLean treated us to a thoroughly professional show. It is hoped that shows similar to this, from Jukebox Promotions, will be offered on a monthly basis.

neighbours which has been very positive, it is something very typical in foreign countries and little known here, but is a good option for reusing things you have at home and do not, so could benefit others¨ Incarnation Mendiola, Councillor of Commerce, expressed his "gratitude to ASVEGA because it creates a tourist attraction and shopping in our town, and in these times it is good that citizens can get extra income

Please support the shows if you want them to continue on Gran Alacant. The European Residents Neighborhood Association of Gran Alacant (ASVEGA) has implemented in collaboration with the departments of Commerce and Gran Alacant, the first table top sale of second-hand items for individuals, which was held on Sunday May 20th and will be held every third Sunday of the month next to the municipal office on

Avenida de Escandinavia, 10am to 13.30pm. This initiative was presented at a press conference by Loreto Cascales, Councillor of Gran Alacant, "it is a proposal from

You can book pitches for the future markets by phoning:- 609 932 578.

Los Three Caballeros

Hi Barry & Sandra,

Is this just human nature or what!?

Do you like to walk on the promenade at Los Arenales or even ride your bike along there in the bike lane.? So the council go to the trouble of marking out a bike lane for the bikes so the walkers can walk safely along the promenade & the bikers can pedal along with out dodging the walkers ,wonderful. But have people noticed, I am sure they have, how some people walk on the cycle track & when they hear the sound of a bell turn & look daggers at the cyclist as if he or she had no right to be on the cycle lane! But it works the other way around too.As you walk along the promenade, thinking you are safe from the cyclists in their cycle lane, next thing a cycle zooms by at a rate of speed good enough to seriously injure someone. Why can't people stick to the rules?? It's so simple? I would be interested in peoples comments to help understand human nature a little more please. keep up the good work. regards Bill

My young grandson called the other day to wish me Happy Birthday. He asked me how old I was, and I told him, 62. My grandson was quiet for a moment, and then he asked, "Did you start at 1?"

MONTEMAR BOWLS AND SOCIAL CLUB (Sponsored by Super Valu)

Kings Cup Division A South Wednesday 2nd May 2012. Monte Mar Lords played Quesada Lions on a lovely day, on a good green, against a very good team. Quesada won on both the Ladies and Men's singles, the pairs and the triples. Monte Mar Lords won the rinks game 17 to 14 well done to Rowena Good, John Caiger,Tony Finan and skip Colin Armitage. Shots for 54 Shots against 99 Points for 2 Points against 10 SABA Hurricane League Friday 4th May 2012. The Torros played home today against top of the league team Greenlands Glosters. Winning on three rinks and losing on three was not a bad result but losing on overall shots meant that we did not quite secure enough points to edge into the top of the league position. Well done to the winning teams skippered by Ted Hyman, John Corbet and Colin Armitage Shots for 93 Shots against 103 Points for 6 Points against 8 SABA Hurricane League Monday 7th May 2012. The Torros played at home today against the very strong La Marina Navigators. The Torros won on two rinks, drew on one rink and won on the overall shots. The result was a draw. Well done to those who won and drew, skippered by John Corbet, Tony Finan and John Caiger. Shots for 107 Shots against 105 Points for 7 Points against 7 Kings cup Wednesday 9th May Monte Mar Lords visited Greenlands Monarchs . It was a lovely days bowling for our trips team of Stan Routledge, Diane Ridley and skip Joe Ridley winning by 25 to 18. The rest of our team seemed to wilt in the Spanish sunshine. Well done Greenlands for a competitive and sporting game. Shots for 71 Shots against 103 Points for 2 Points against 10 It has been a quiet time since the last game and we are looking forward to resuming the fray at the end of May, but until then we continue with our roll-ups honing up our skills and generally keeping fit. Right is a picture of Mick Soars, Jim Ure and Terry Lemon three of our stalwarts enjoying the summer weather.

TIMETABLE & ROUTE FOR THE GRAN ALACANT TOURIST TRAIN

A Day on Tabarca (advertisement)

One of the things quite often said about Gran Alacant is that there is nothing to do other than beach, bars and restaurants. I came across Dive Academy Santa Pola via google, rang them up and booked on a Snorkel Safari to Tabarca Marine reserve. Damon the owner lives in Gran Alacant and was happy to pick us up on route to the Dive Centre 10 minutes away in Santa Pola. We were teamed up with a mixed group of English and Dutch families and after putting on our wetsuits (mostly back to front) fins and masks (scuba divers frown on them being called flippers and goggles apparently) and headed off to the island on the taxi speedboat. After arriving on Tabarca, Jake our ‘divemaster’ gave us a quick brief on how to put the gear on correctly, safety procedures and marine life we were likely to see. The first site we visited was called the black skull a small rock island about 100 meters from shore. Initially the water is only 1 to 2 meters deep which was great for the kids to gain confidence and the wetsuits actually helped them float. As soon as your mask breaks the surface you can see literally thousands of fish much to the kids and big kids delight. Around the back of the black skull the water is a little bit deeper and the more adventurous amongst us were ‘duck diving’ to the octopus holes Jake expertly spotted. After a quick break we headed to another site and went in the limestone caves, I was a little apprehensive about this at first but the caves turned out to be breath taking and not at all claustrophobic. Again the marine life was spectacular and the water as clear as a swimming pool. We headed back on the boat about 2pm with a boat load of smiley, tired kids and adults alike. It was a great day rounded of nicely with a cold drink in Marina Miramar.

Dive Academy runs Snorkel Safaris on Tues, Thurs and Saturdays. Tel 965 414 510 or 648 463 310 www.diveacademy-santapola.com email: info@diveacademy-santapola.com

Next month will be the 10th anniversary of our practice. During this time we have seen lots of animals, mostly dogs and cats, but also some exotic pets, such as snakes, hamsters, Guinea pigs, Vietnamese miniature pigs, sugar gliders, parrots, budgies, canaries… even a GACELA with an infected foot, and a lost sheep which was found behind the practice, at the pine trees area (we managed to find her owner thanks to the ID tag she had at the ear). Some of them were ill, and some other ones came just for their vaccines, microchip, or grooming. We have had some difficult and strange cases that implied a real challenge for us, and ended happily… or not, because sometimes, making a right diagnosis is not a good new, specially when nothing can be done for helping the animal and the owner. We also have had some “bureaucratically speaking” difficult cases: legalizing pet passports without having enough documentation, finding the owner of a dog whose microchip was registered in an unknown database… Sometimes we have managed to find the owner of a dog which was lost for more than one year. There are some cases that are special for us, maybe because they are very uncommon, or maybe because it’s the first time. I remember my first emergency in my first job, several years before we opened our practice at Gran Alacant. I was substituting for 2 weeks the owners of a practice placed in a village at the Costa Blanca. Despite I had no previous experience, I was completely alone at the practice, so I was supposed to do everything there, including emergencies. They had a couple of frogs as pets, and I had to feed them twice a day with alive worms. Saturday evening I went to the practice to give the frogs their dinner, and then I realized there was an emergency waiting for me: a couple had brought their 4 years old 45 kg Rottweiler suffering severe convulsions. “No problem” I thought, “Just an insecticide poisoning”. This kind of insecticides has its own antidote, so the poisoning is relatively easy to treat, but in this case, there was no answer at all to the antidote. So I decided to call Sergio, who was working then in a hospital about 100 km away from me, and, after describing him the symptoms he suggested it was an strychnine poisoning, and that was the right diagnosis. The Rottweiler had eaten some tomatoes from the neighbor, who probably had sprayed them with the poison. The emergency lasted –non stop- from Saturday evening to Monday morning, because it takes about 30 hours to eliminate completely the strychnine, and during this time, the patient must be kept under barbiturate anaesthetic for stopping the convusions which other way would kill him. During this time I was kindly provided an omelette sandwich, a banana, a yoghourt, and a coke by the owners of the dog, and during the night they stayed with him just for letting me sleep for a few hours. It was probably the longest weekend of my life, unable to leave the practice, sleeping very little, and sharing my time with a massive Rottweiler. Fortunately he awoke Monday morning completely recovered after being nearly 48 hours under anaesthetic, and he went back home in an acceptable condition. I can’t remember the name of the owners or the exact date when everything happened, but I often remember “the biggest Rottweiler in the world”.

WHAT’S THAT? IN THE CLOT? by

Mark Etheridge With luck and a following wind, by the time this article appears in print I will be back in Gran Alacant for the first time since the end of March. This is the best time of the year for me, with all the summer visitors in place; singing, displaying and breeding, and wearing their best summer finery! No, Iʼm not talking about human visitors, but those who have flown here under their own power rather than courtesy of Ryanair or Easyjet.

One of the birds I am looking forward to seeing again is the very elegant and smart Woodchat Shrike. Regular readers of this column (hi, Bill and Val!) may recall my article some time ago on its close cousin, the Southern Grey Shrike which is here all year round, but the Woodchat Shrike is a summer visitor from late March to October, spending the winter in Africa south of the Sahara desert. Usually there are at least three or four pairs in the Clot, and like the Grey they have the habit of sitting high up on a tree, telephone wires or fence posts where they can easily be seen. However, they are one of those bird species which have a built-in human radar detector, and wonʼt usually allow you to get too close before they fly off, so a pair of binoculars is essential to get a good view.

Although smaller than the Grey, the Woodchat Shrike feeds on much the same sort of prey – large insects and beetles, small lizards and birds – and has the same rather unsettling habit of impaling their prey on thorn bushes to provide a larder which can be consumed at leisure. This is the reason why all the birds in the Shrike family are also known as “Butcher Birds” to British birders; the Spanish call them Alcaudon comun, although in the Catalan dialect it is called “Capsigrany” which is another term for “idiot”!

The Woodchat Shrike is another highly-prized “twitch” for visiting British birders, they are not often seen in the UK apart from a handful of birds which are usually seen each year in May and June as they overshoot their breeding range during their northwards spring migration. They donʼt hang about for long, and quickly return to warmer climes.

My picture is of the handsome male bird, the female is slightly drabber, with less of that striking chestnut colour on the back of their head. Like the Southern Grey Shrike, it has that “Lone Ranger” mask around the eyes which give it a slightly sinister appearance, and it is one of the bandits of the bird world! See you next month.
