THIS MAGAZINE IS NOW IN ITS 13TH YEAR. TRUST US. WE MAKE YOUR ADVERT WORK.
We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, including that from a representative from the Town Hall, as we have since May 2005.
If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine - granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.co.uk
IMPORTANT message from the Town Hall What is the Padron and why it is so important to sign it? The Padron is the Register of Inhabitants. It is a list in which all the inhabitants of a municipality are included, regardless of their age and nationality. This list serves as a basis for the State to provide each Town Hall with an annual income, the greater the number of people registered in the municipality, the higher the income. In addition, according to Spanish legislation, depending on the registered population, the municipality can develop more activities. For example, for municipalities with less than 50,000 inhabitants, the competences on transport (bus, train, etc.) do not depend on the City Council, but on the Conselleria.
such as Playa Lisa or Santa Pola del Este. The sum of all the people who actually live in Santa Pola and Gran Alacant, and who, therefore, do make use of the services provided by the City Council, is close to 55,000 people. That means that the Town Hall receives money from the state worth 31,000 people, but must make investments to meet the needs of almost 55,000 people (almost double). Therefore, it is very necessary to be aware of the need to register, and for that, it is simply enough to live in the locality (either with a house owned or rented) for 6 or more months.
That is why, for Santa Pola, and by extension Gran Alacant, can count on all the services we deserve, we must have the money necessary to implement these services and, at the same time, we must have the competence to manage them.
To register, simply go to the municipal offices, either in the Gran Alacant offices or in the Town Hall, and request, fill out and submit the necessary documentation, which can be provided there. And it does not suppose any cost for the citizen.
Therefore, it is necessary that people become aware of the need to register in the municipality of Santa Pola, because that would allow everyone to enjoy better transport services, health (the more people registered, more health infrastructure, such as a complete walk in clinic for Gran Alacant, must be built), education ...
Please, it is very important that you register, because in that way it would be possible to request for a health clinic (with all medical services) be built in Gran Alacant. The Ministry could also be requested to install telecommunication towers to serve the area, thus avoiding existing coverage problems.
At the moment Santa Pola counts with 31,000 registered inhabitants, of whom about 13,000 live in Gran Alacant. However, when we study the water consumption of the homes of Gran Alacant, we see that many more people are living in Gran Alacant than those 13,000. In fact, our technical staff estimates that in Gran Alacant they should be around 20,000 people registered, and in Santa Pola, there should be 7,000 more registered, in areas
Investments could also be requested for the implementation of a construction plan / repair plan for sidewalks, renewal of pipes, etc. The Town Hall could regulate public transport, to improve communication between Gran Alacant and Santa Pola, as well as with other neighbouring towns. If you want to have all the services you deserve, help us and register!

Hello friends,
We would like to thank the TOURISM COUNCILLOR for enabling Jose Manuel Blasco to join our magazines monthly column. Many of you will surely have met Jose at the Tourist Information Counter in Santa Pola. He always exudes enthusiasm for all that is happening in our area. Here are his suggestions of “Where to visit” and ‘What to see” for this month
June is the month for one of the biggest fiestas in Spain “ Bonfires of St. John” the fiesta in the streets takes place from the 20th to 24th, also bull fighting from the 17th to the 24th and one more extra fight on the 3rd August. The cartoon monuments will set up in the streets on the 20th and they will be burnt on the night of the 24th. After the burning of the monuments, on the next five days there will be a fantastic international fireworks contest at midnight on Postiguet beach. On the night of the 23rd, hundreds of fires will be lit on the beach to celebrate ancestral rituals and traditions; there will also be a fiesta in Santa Pola on Levante beach as usual. Also all these municipalities that celebrate their main fiestas, Moors and Christians in: Elda 7th to 11th, Benjuzar, Teulada-Moraira 17th, Pego, Agost and Benissa 29th to 2nd June. This month and the first days in July Santa Pola becomes a very sporty place, here are some examples: On the 22nd, 23rd and 24th the VII handball Tournament, will be held on the football field “Els Xiprerets”. On the 8th of July takes place the International open waters swim Tabarca-Santa Pola. This year a new record with more than 1600 swimmers participating from 13 countries. That’s all for friends. Hi everyone, Great to see the summer weather is finally here at last and the beach filling up. A couple of new openings to tell you about in this issue. In Carabassi Centre centre, the Brother’s bar is under new ownership as well as O’Duills Bar, which after 15 years will be known as Miley O’Rourke’s. La Piazza – a new Italian restaurant is opening in MASA Square and a warm welcome to James and Lisa – the new owners of The Belfry. Please check out all the OPENING Parties in our magazine. We often get emails asking for the improvement of facilities and services in Gran Alacant. Please take time to read the message from the Town Hall about signing the Padron on page 3. The more signatures on the Padron the more funds are allocated to this area. We will be reprinting the article every so often to keep reminding you about the importance of signing it. Have a good month, Ged & Lou Our little dog Zia and our cat Casper have hidden themselves away in the magazine, can you find them? Last month Zia was on page 44 and Casper on page 58

BARRY’S BITS OF NEWS
you would like improved on Gran Alacant.
As my apple computer is in the apple hospital For three weeks I am having to use the ipad it is at times like this that your realize how reliant we are on modern technology xxx Watch out for the big hole on the parking area opposite hyper pools on the commercial centre watched someone trying to negotiate it.
This event was advertised in last month’s mag, it was what it was about that threw us. So some rumours are true, partly!
xxx Heard a rumour, I should have known better, that there was to be a meeting about what improvements we would like on Gran Alacant. Had seen no info about it other than it being at the life resort so off we go, walking around that area trying to find it. Admitting defeat we came away and tried the library. There in a back room there were now 18 of us. This was to be a talk from the guardian civil about safety for seniors. Dani then gave us lots of advice about not leaving bags unattended as well as a raft of other information. Do not answer your door to any stranger and never give money to anyone coming to your home so called people asking for money for good causes. They are fake! They may show you logos from organizations they represent and even sums of money on a list donated by your neighbours. Give them nothing. One shocking fact told to us at the meeting was how some people could not afford to look after their older relatives so would take them out for a ride treat them to a drink at a service then walk out and leave them. The police would then be called and have to find a way for them to be looked after. All I all much useful information was given to us all Then came the bit we were mislead about. A form was handed to us all, a copy of which you can find in the library, asking for what
6
We have asked Dani if he would write a monthly section of questions and answers in this magazine. He is consulting with his bosses. xxx Does anyone read this message on our bins? If so, does anyone take any notice of the message on our bins? Does the writing need to be much much BIGGER?!
The sign on the bins says “ Do not leave any rubbish next to the bin”!
Thank you for sending us this photo! There was absolutely no need for this as the bin was completely empty, so how hard can it be to throw the bags in? The culprit was reported as the rubbish included a box with their name and postal address! If you would like to supply news and info for our next edition, please email: info@granalacantadvertiser.com

Well, would you believe it!!! It seems we have another published author in our midst! Cathy Hernandez who is employed at OP Group Spain in Commercial Centre, Gran Alacant. Cathy is a great cat lover who is running her own cattery and who has written a book entitled Utopiacats Tales. If you are a cat lover, it is a must! This book is not only very informative and containing tales of numerous cats and kittens Cathy has encountered and looked after in her cattery over the years... it will have you laughing as well as in tears!
Many books have been sold so far to the States, France, Iceland and Spain. Thank you all animal lovers! “I am neither a writer nor a teacher. I don’t have a large vocabulary in English (my second language) and I don’t intend to teach anything with this book. I simply want to share the stories of some of the cats who have crossed my path … I have come to rescue many animals in distress in my life, stopping on the road for an injured dog, a possum about to drown, a lost starving fawn, hedgehogs, a baby partridge and all types of birds, a few rabbits etc.
And did I mention cats?” From Cecilie Mjelde: "I’m at page 22 in the book and I laughed and cried already" From Yvonne Bragg: "I must tell you I have enjoyed reading your book about the cats. It made me laugh and almost cry at times." From Lou, GA Advertiser: “Made me laugh and made me cry ... I wasn’t able to put it down and read the entire book one Sunday afternoon” Available for sale at Papeleria Sarai, Commercial Centre, Gran Alacant 15€ READ THE MAGAZINE EVERY MONTH AT www.granalacantadvertiser.com

further goals. Mike with two and John (I think) were our scorers. A very fair referee who let no one get away with running except luckily our players! No injuries reported (including heatstroke or sunburn )and we all enjoyed the hospitality of the hosts in the bar after the game. Looking now for volunteers for our next match against San Fulgencio on their astro turf pitch.
The Oldies Gran Alacant Walking Football Club was formed last August and after 37 weekly sessions played their first away game at Rojales on May 22nd. Our motley crew (as you can see in the picture) in their first ‘competitive’ match put up a spirited performance going down 8-3 to Rojales on their Astro pitch. We were only 5-3 down early in the third quarter but defensive frailties cost us three
We cannot play these teams at home as we do not have an astro turf pitch here on Gran Alacant. Our sponsored shirts looked good at the Rojales game, thanks to Gran Alacant Properties, GA-Homefinders, Gran Alacant Advertiser magazine, Hispania, and La Paletta Restaurant. GRAHAM’S GIANT VEG ROOFTOP
Couple of my giant vegetables this year might be an interesting addition to your magazine. 34 Lb cabbage and my 28 Lb Swede grown on my terrace in Gran Alacant!
My interest in growing giant vegetables did not start till I arrived in Spain in 2005 joining a website called Giant Veg.com which is where I get special seeds and fertilizers. The website is full of tips and information I need from professionals. It’s very scientific analysing soil for whatever vegetable I want to grow. You also need a lot of patience!

THIS MAGAZINE IS NOW IN ITS 12TH YEAR. TRUST US. WE MAKE YOUR ADVERT WORK.
MONTEMAR BOWLS & SOCIAL CLUB
Sponsored by The Belfry, The Pub, Bowling Abroad, Avalon, LoungeD & Rogers
MONTEMAR BOWLS & SOCIAL CLUB Monte Mar Bowls and Social Club Sponsored by The Belfry, The Pub, Bowling Abroad, Avalon, LoungeD and Rogers Monday 9th April The first game of the summer league. Monte Mar Torro's were at home to the La Siesta Hornets. Monte Mar made a excellent start to the season, winning on five rinks and drawing on one. Hopefully this is a good omen for a successful season. Saturday 14th April
Wednesday 25th April We entertained Moonfleet Bowls Club touring team from Weymouth. The weather was overcast with some light rain at times but it did not deter us from having a very friendly and enjoyable morning playing six games of rinks. Monte Mar had a good result but as always the scores really don't matter on these sort of occasions, as everyone involved had a excellent mornings bowling. It was lovely to see our old friends Sandra and Terry Errington again. Terry was once Monte Mar Captain before moving back to the UK, so having them both play at our club again made it a very special occasion for all of us. Afterwards we all enjoyed a meal and a few drinks in the Rincon Restaurant, which rounded off the day perfectly.
Monte Mar hosted the Four Nations, another very enjoyable days bowling. After the morning session England were in the lead. This all changed in the afternoon session with Ireland winning with 118 shots. The Irish team with the most shots were presented with a mug and coaster set. The final scores Ireland 118, England 109, Scotland 88 and Wales 82. Well done to all who took part. Wednesday 18th April Monte Mar hosted a visiting team, Bookham Bowls Club from England. Finally the weather was perfect and an enjoyable of bowls was had by all. Although a win for Monte Mar, Bookham Bowls Club were pleased to have improved on their first match score.

The Reiki Room Harmonious Healing
with Jackie Canale
Hello readers, For those who don’t know me let me introduce myself, my name is Jackie Canale and I am a holistic therapist working in Gran Alacant, promoting holistic wellbeing wherever I can. Welcome to June. In previous issues I have explained some different treatments and the benefits they have to the body, in this issue I would like to talk about some natural anti-inflammatories for pain relief.
INFLAMMATION FIGHTERS: Turmeric: Up there with my favourites, I personally take it daily, as do a lot of my clients and the benefits speak for themselves. Great for the joints, any muscular pain, aids digestion also not as harsh on the tummy as taking an ibuprofen. Ginger: Fresh is best, personally I use this also for a hot compress, grate some into freshly boiled water, leave for 5 minutes to allow it to infuse, soak a flannel in it (being careful not to burn yourself) wring it out and place it over your area of pain. Great for the joints and tired muscles. Alternatively, drink some fresh ginger tea, also a great way to rid headaches. Onions, Garlic, Black Pepper: Cooking a lot of dishes using these ingredients is a fantastic way to rid pain. They are naturally high in the potent antioxidant quercetin which is known to help the body fight inflammation. Don’t like the taste? Get the supplements in capsule form to take daily.
Living with chronic pain is difficult, many of my clients experience this daily, and I myself suffer from a painful hip condition called bursitis that affects my sciatic nerve causing very painful flare-ups in my hip. Those who know me know how much I challenge myself to keep it in a manageable place with regular visits to my physio, booking massage appointments with other therapists once a month, exercising regularly and by using some wonderful supplements daily.
Pineapple: The bromelain contained is a great way to give your immune system a boost. Freshly juiced or chopped in a fruit salad. Perfect! Spinach: Another favourite of mine! Steam cooked is best, it contains carotenoids which is an inflammation reducing antioxidant. Alternatively, have some in with your salads, through your eggs etc. so tasty! Hemp Seed Oil: Use it in your soups and

sauces or dressings, alternatively you can choose any unrefined organic oils with omega-3 fatty acids which all help to reduce inflammation. Lastly, aromatherapy‌there are essential oils containing anti-inflammatory properties I use blends on my clients very often, some for respiratory inflammation, others arthritic inflammation, or ones for inflammation on different skin conditions. I make the blends for massage but for respiratory you can purchase a diffuser and have it on at home. Some of these oils include, Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Lavender, Spike Lavender, German chamomile to name a few. So, as much as we sometimes need to reach for the medicine cabinet for our pain at times, we don’t always need to turn it into habit, making some small changes to our daily routines can avoid frequent flare ups. Using the above to our lifestyles, join a yoga, Pilates or tai chi class (all available
in Gran Alacant) no matter how mobile you feel, every little will help! Build up the muscle round they joints.
If you are on any medication for a certain illness please consult your doctor before starting any oral supplements. Please feel free to call or drop me an email with any questions you may have, to book an appointment or to book a free 30-minute consultation to determine what treatment suits you best.

As their eyes adjusted, a tiny window, or was it a hole, in the angled ceiling, gave just enough light to see the centre of the large room. The corners were shrouded in darkness. The four friends had been bound together in pairs. Each couple had been cuffed at the wrist with a nylon tie. As Ralf, a giant of a man, had ushered them through the door, his last words were, “make yourselves comfortable”. The room did not feel comfortable, as they stood motionless, trying to get a sense of their surroundings. Eventually, Simon pointed out that the most obvious thing to do first was to try to release themselves from the restraints. They could at least then make it easier to search for a way out. On the table in the centre of the room was a solitary candle. He edged towards it with Cathy in tow. The ‘candle’ turned out to be battery operated. The batteries were not working. Both he and Cathy started to search the drawers in the table and they each found a battery in drawers at each end of the table. They worked. With the added light reaching into the corner nearest them, Frank and Suzy could now see that the room was partly equipped as a workshop. A pile of old tools lay heaped on the floor. Suzy was the first to move, pulling Frank towards the tools, and beginning the search for something to release the ties. Simon and Cathy could now see that the only other exit from the room was a door in the same wall as the one through which they had entered. It had no handle and would not push open, but at least there was a keyhole in this one. As their companions argued over the most appropriate item from the pile, to remove the ties, Simon and Cathy moved around the dark spaces to see what else could help them, in particular, was there a key? That would have been too

easy. They would not have been thrown in here with a simple means of escape. A howl of success announced that the others were separated. Frank brought over the blunt, but usable pliers with which he cut their bonds. All four now spent what seemed to be an age, checking drawers, cupboards, picture frames, fittings, fixtures and furnishings for key to the door. The only serious anomaly that Simon could see was a panel on a side wall that was much lighter in colour that the others. He pushed it, kicked it and even tried to pull it but there was no response. Suzy, by now, was worn out and sat on the only arm chair. As she lifted the blank sheets of paper that lay on the chair, she could see for the first time, looking towards the candle, some words on the paper. Even in the dim light Simon noticed the expression on her face. He rushed over to read the note. Reach up with your palms and you shall be rewarded. Palms, two hands! He went back to the wall and there, each side of the light coloured panel, were two slightly darker ones, barely discernible in the dim light as being different to the rest of the wall. He reached up and pressed them with his palms. There was a “click” and the light coloured panel moved out towards him a fraction. Searching behind, with his fingertips, he found the key. It was large and looked a perfect size for the door they had tried to open. He was trembling as he fumbled to get the key into the lock but as he turned it, the lock opened. Suzy forced her way passed him and pushed the door open. Beyond, brightly lit, was the reception area of the “Escape Room Adventure”. The girl at the desk looked up and pointed to the small buffet that was set out in the corner. “Help yourselves to some refreshments.” And then calling she said “ Ralf, can you clean up in there; next victims in twenty minutes”.

Mark of Respect Two men in their 60’s were playing golf one day on their local course. One of them was about to chip on the green when he saw a long funeral procession on the road. He immediately stopped in mid-swing, removed his cap, closed his eyes and bowed his head in prayer. ‘That was the most sensitive to do” his playing partner said.“ Well, I was married to her for 37 years!”

MIRROR CORNER Dear readers, This corner will be devoted to give you some help and emotional support. Using a well known psychological tool called “projection” I will hope to achieve this. Others expressing their feelings and situations seems to be one of the best ways to have a truly good look “inside” ourselves. To do this mechanism of empathy and projection (basic human emotional defence) we can create, recreate, build and rebuild different points of view about different situations. We grow on this basis. My proposal is for you to bring me different, real situations that can have an impact on our everyday lives, and that may also be an interesting topic to others. I encourage you to take an active part and bring me situations, ask me questions or some possible suggestions, even a consultation if required. This way we are all co-operating together in “mirror corners” to make it work for our own benefits and interests. This information from yourselves will all be kept in the strictest confidentiality, names, emails, telephone numbers will not appear, you can even leave it simply as ‘anonymous’ for ease.
How to avoid family squabbles during holidays! It is common that when we come back from holidays, family are far from being relaxed and happy, they are on the opposite side, holding some conflicts that are felt like unknown. All day together: Relationships work much better when we miss our partner a little bit during the day and look forward to being together again in the evenings. On holiday that routine is altered, and also added with the kids! Being in a rush, and in an every day routine, prevent us from truly spending time together. Our partner is the one we kiss early in the morning and that one that we reencounter in the evenings. During holidays our partner is with us all day long, the one that says things like ¨are you keeping an eye on the kids”?! Or “come on we will be late to go to the beach¨… and the conflicts are often inevitable. The problem is not the holiday obviously; the problem is that people are often not devoting enough time to communicate during their busy lives. That is why come September, the end of holiday season, it is so common to see an increase in consultations, which start with something like …¨we arrived to the conclusion that we are not getting on very well together¨.
What is the meaning of ¨together¨ actually? We all go through our individual changes, feelings, thoughts, and fears… and there is the “other”. It’s important to find time to share our feelings with each other in our daily lives, not just on holidays. Wanting Different things: Sometimes members of the family want to do different things at different hours, or just don´t want to do nothing special. Alternative Action: Kids quarrelling all day add stress to your holidays; why not make a daily planner prior to holidays to make sure nobody is left out and everybody’s favourite activities are included.

Kids want all the attention: leaving parents often exhausted and not having any time to themselves. Alternative Action The taking care of kids is no one parents responsibility, it is better not to pre-establish roles. Advancing and creating is a matter that involves all family members. If you have older kids, make them part of the different situations and get some help from them … reinforce their role giving them something as a reward. Doing this, they feel grown up and valuable.
High Expectations: people often have too high an expectation about their holidays, and the reality can slap them in the face. Alternative Action: Sometimes little enjoyable things are the ones kept in the memory. So even though it’s good to make a holiday plan, don´t make long lists ending up with a hectic schedule like a long trip on boat, followed by late dinner, and then early morning hiking route… This is the best way to end up exhausted! Try to enjoy
I would love for you to suggest to me some topics you want to know about, for sure I will have had some real topics related to it during my past work history, I have twenty years of folders to investigate. You can ask me any questions, and I will give you my contribution in the form of suggestion, hoping it can help you. little things, take your time, and don´t put more than one or two activities in a day. Leave few days ¨totally unplanned and free¨, they can turn out to be the best! Friends and other commitments: use up all the time off, and no time is left for relaxation Alternative Action: It is very exciting for our friends coming to share that afternoon or holidays with us. Try to make it as natural as you can, share your present situations, because what is special is sharing the time together enjoying simple things like the sun and that simple beer out on the terrace. Don’t try to out-plan each other, instead let plans to be created from there and make sure they are simple. Expect Unexpected: unexpected events can halt our plans Alternative Action: Imagine some plane delays happens, or whatever unexpected situation. Leave apart that sense of loosing time. Life is what you are leaving every second, so leave and feel whatever the situation requires, because if you are regretting, that is what you are deciding to feel. Think about it.

Out & About with Star & Ashlee Terra Natura, Benidorm Hi my name is Star and I have been lucky enough to call Gran Alacant my home for over 10 years now. My 8 year old daughter Ashlee and I are often “Out & About” enjoying the local attractions and culture in this part of Spain. Over the next few months I will be sharing some of our experiences with you to encourage you to go “Out & About” yourselves and maybe learn a little bit about this beautiful place we call home. This month we wanted to talk about our recent trips to another of our favourite places, Terra Natura in Benidorm. We frequently visit every year, most recently to follow the progress of a family of Jaguars.
were born in January 2017 are now in a zoo in Northern Spain. We really enjoyed watching Susto grow in the two years that he was there and read the updates from Ireland. The two tiger cubs Neu and Pluja were only allowed to be viewed by the public on two separate occasions and we were first in the
Terra Natura has changed a lot over the last 7/8 years that we have been visiting and Ashlee and her friends have been lucky enough to see lots of animals grow from newborns to adults. This includes Chicks, Snakes, an Eagle Owl (who was sooo fluffy), 2 White Handed Gibbons, 2 Siamang Monkeys, a Rhino called Susto, three Tiger cubs and most recently Jaguar (Panther) cubs. As Terra Natura are part of a European breeding program, Susto the baby Rhino who was born there in 2012 to Nisha (Dad) and Shiwa (Mum), was moved to a zoo in Ireland and the two Bengal Tiger cubs Neu and Pluja that

Out & About with Star & Ashlee few years we have enjoyed watching the parents and admire their beautiful fur. Socorro is the 5 year old father who came to Terra Natura in 2014 from Krefeld (Almania) and he has beige colouring and spotted fur. The mother, Grecia is also 5, completely black, although in the right light you can also see her spotted pattern and arrived in 2014 from Athens. In the Summer of 2017 their two female cubs Pepa and Lola were born at the zoo, both have the same coloured fur as their father. Since birth they have been kept with the mother and have been gradually introduced to the father as often the father can reject them and this can cause problems. The team have followed a strict routine to ensure the safety of the cubs and thanks to their hard work and the calm and tranquil nature of Socorro, in May 2018 they were finally able to live as a family unit in one enclosure. Pepa and Lola are very active cubs who are making the most of playing and cooling off in the water in their enclosure and keeping Socorro and Grecia busy!! This is the only family of Jaguars in the whole of Spain. I could write lots more about Terra Natura as it has a special place in our hearts, we probably visit it an average of 10 times a year!! We buy the annual pass in March as it is on special offer and also use it to go to Aqua Natura too. We thoroughly recommend both Terra and Aqua Natura and if you don’t have a car there are bus trips that can take you there and you can often get discounted tickets and special offers at the airport, in shops or online at: http://benidorm.terranatura.com/es/.
And don’t forget that this year on August 19th it will be the Holi Festival to celebrate the birthday of Pepita the Elephant. It truly is an amazing atmosphere with lots of colour and fun. To learn more, go to the Gran Alacant Advertiser website and read the article we wrote about it that was published in July 2017. Join us next month for some more fun “Out and About” Star & Ashlee xxx

DOWN AT THE RETIREMENT CENTER 80-year old Bessie bursts into the meeting room at the retirement home. She holds her clenched fist in the air and announces, "Anyone who can guess what's in my hand can have sex with me tonight!!" An elderly gentleman in the rear shouts out, "An elephant?" Bessie thinks a minute and says, "Close enough." SENIOR DRIVING As a senior citizen was driving down the motorway, his car phone rang. Answering, he heard his wife's voice urgently warning him, "Vernon, I just heard on the news that there's a car going the wrong way on I-25. Please be careful!" The Giant’s Cauldron WALK Thank you Dorothy for another wonderful walk on a fine day. I remember reading about this walk a couple of year’s ago with it’s intriguing name, La Caldera de Gigante! Although, we’d not visited this area before, I expected that the terrain would be totally flat, hence being suitable for the fruit and vegetable farmers of the Vega Baja. Off we set taking the N332 south from Gran Alacant heading for Guardamar where we turned right on to the CV-91 to Algorfa before taking the CV-935 towards Los Montesinos. Turn left at the Montemar urbanisation and take the second left turn on to Calle Manuel de Falla. The information board at the start of the walk will soon come in to view… The route itself is very well signposted. At first, it’s reminiscent of any verdant forest walk through the pine trees although the path has a few ‘ups and downs’ as it dips in and out of the watercourse following the shallow ravine! It’s well worth the 3 km walk when you emerge out of the trees and into a miniature Grand Canyon! Information Board
It’s deeper than it looks!
78
What an amazing geographical feature! Although the water wasn’t very deep due to the recent drought, it’s not hard to imagine the ravine turning into a seething mass of flood water channelling through the rocks before being sent on its way to the River Segura at Benijófar. Take time to look around you – study the eroded sandstone rocks that are now silky smooth and marvel at the ‘Swiss cheese’ effect in others. Interesting rock formations! The path crosses a track and drops to the ravine floor. Ahead lies a stretch of shaded sandy beach ahead which looked inviting in the afternoon sunlight, shafted by giant pine trees! A wild orange grove soon appears as you emerge from the trees again. The track leads straight down to A7 motorway and continues left alongside, eventually completing the circuit walk as shown on the information board at the beginning. However, we opted to return the same route, escaping from the reality check as soon as possible and enjoying a second look at one of nature’s wonders!

GRAN ALACANT GOLF SOCIETY In the 3 previous issues we have explored the origins of our Society, described the course at El Plantio where we play and explained the format of our competitions held each week on Tuesdays and Fridays. It follows that we play 8 or 9 competitions per month and it does seem appropriate to list all the prize winners (20 or so!) in this article. The number of players seen in April fell from March which, as mentioned previously, peaked for the days around St Patricks weekend and the onset of an early Easter. Perhaps the biggest factor over last few weeks has been the persistent wind that has blown across the region which, of course, has affected the scoring. That said, as we write this piece in mid May the weather appears to have become more settled and with sun now on our backs we are noticing both an increase in the number of players and in the quality of the golf. As always new members and/or guests are always welcome, whether a full time resident, someone with your own holiday home for regular visits throughout the year or a holiday maker in the region. We would love to see you. For more information please contact either Barry C (686180585) or Barry D (966183018).

Liliana Aldeguer Cerdán 793 English translation by Sergio Reina Esteban col 747
RISKS AT THE BEACH The number of dogs you can see at the beach gets highly increased in summer. In most villages at the Costa there are specific areas where dogs are allowed. Of course, at the rest of beaches and areas, dogs access (no matter which size or breed, or if they walk on the lead or not) is strictly forbidden.
1.Portuguese man o’war: It’s an organism similar to a jellyfish. Man o’war (and jellyfishes) are unable to move by themselves, so they normally reach the beaches via marine streams, and they are relatively easy to find at the sea and lying on the sand at the end of spring and beginning of summer. They should never be touched, even if they are dead, because man o’war (Physalia physalis) toxin remains active even 48 hours after the organism death. This toxin is strong enough to kill sensitive people and animals, so, if we detect one, we must tell lifeguards or Local Police. 2. Jellyfishes: Most of them aren’t dangerous, despite their bite can be painful. We mustn`t touch them. 3. Fishing hooks or fishing lines: They are very commonly swallowed by dogs when they find them at the beach. We should NEVER pull the line, but we can cut it. This is an emergency that must be treated by a Vet, who will always know
82
in every case the right way to remove the hook without producing an extra damage. 4. Broken glass and other things: They are rarely found in urban beaches since they are cleaned every day. 5. Other dogs: What we mean is the possibility of transmission of infectious diseases such a kennel cough. We would like to remind everybody that you will be asked for your dog’s passport (which implies microchip and updated rabies injection) for allowing it to get into the dogs area at the beach. Other vaccines are not mandatory. In our experience, practically every year there is a kennel cough outbreak in summer, and one of the possible causes could be the high number of dogs that meet at beaches and public parks. It`s a very contagious disease, and direct contact is not necessary for the transmission. Prevention is easy and consists on a vaccine 6. Heat stroke: is a very serious condition, often lethal. Normally no one will leave a pet directly exposed to sunlight in summer, but we often forget dogs are unable to sweat (and they don’t realize!). Half an hour of intense playing at the beach is enough to start a heat stroke, which is an emergency (every minute counts). Dogs don’t know that, when they are playing, they must stop and avoid the sunlight regularly. They would play non-stop, so we must make them stop. In spring and summer, when temperatures are high, they shouldn’t play (and go outdoors) between 11:00 and 17:00. All these indications are even more critical in those dogs which must wear a muzzle, since the muzzle makes them not to pant properly, which is the only refrigeration mechanism of the dogs. Good summer to everybody.

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge
PRAYING MANTIS edges, all the better to keep hold of their struggling prey once caught.
One of the great advantages for me of living in Gran Alacant is that the Clot de Galvany is within a ten minute walk from my front door, and anyone interested in nature will find a variety of things to observe in their natural habitat. There may be one or two of you however who have no great interest in wildlife, and may become somewhat alarmed when something that normally dwells in the depths of the Clot somehow finds its way into your house. Take my picture this month for example – I am sure that many people faced with this large insect (it was about five inches long) will recoil in horror. It's my job this month to try and persuade you that it is not something that will hurt you, and indeed if you are a gardener or just proud of a few potted plants on your patio, this insect is good news. You don't need to swat it or call out the pest exterminators! It is of course a Praying Mantis, and this one was on my own patio last month. They are almost immediately recognisable with those strange front legs held as if in prayer, and if you look closely you will see that there is a series of barbs along the
86 86
Those front legs give a clue to what this insect feeds on, and it is always live prey. Insects of all shapes and sizes fall victim to this fearsome predator, and the hunting method is usually the same – the mantis stays immobile until something comes within range, then the forelegs lash out with lighting speed to trap the victim. They have powerful jaws, and make short work of whatever they catch: for you gardeners out there their prey is often things you don't want near your plants! The colour of the Mantis also indicates why it is such a successful predator, as it hides in greenery and can be very difficult to see for both its prey and more crucially for things which might like to eat it in turn. This particular Mantis was in some danger on the contrasting marble of my patio, so I gently ushered it into some greenery after grabbing the photo. I could do this because I know that the Mantis rarely bites people, and even if it did, it isn't a poisonous insect. I would have been in a lot more danger if I was a male Mantis and this was a female, and I had attempted to become extremely friendly – it is well known that many Mantis males get their heads chewed off by the female during mating, and as they say – a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do.
