Hello everyone. Thank goodness it is March with it’s (hopefully) warmer weather. The middle of February was so cold, even with the lovely blue skies the houses have been so cold inside without any heating on. Driving off Gran Alacant towards Alicante, although there are not many Almond tree’s about, the ones that are there have given us a beautiful show of blossom. As you will see in this months magazine there is to be another Big Boxing Night on Gran Alacant at the Sports Centre. We were at the last one, although Sandra was abit dubious about going, it was a good night, just to be in the atmosphere as much as anything. With Easter on the horizon, hopefully there will be more people about soon, keeping all of the businesses busier.
Have a good month Sandra and Barry Our little dog from the front cover has hidden herself away in the magazine, can you find her? Last month she was in the MASA park.

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news, including that from our Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005. It is our perogative at the magazine, NOT to update this 2005 picture, as we all looked a great deal younger!!! Firstly, again, the problem dumping your garden waste. We had a couple of calls last month, saying they had followed our instructions when going to the waste disposal site, only to be sent away. Loreto got straight on the phone to instruct the depots in question to accept these wastes. The tip in Santa Pola by the swimming pool CAN be used, but it is prefered they you take the waste to the eco park on the industrial estate where they have the equipment for breaking down the waste. If you have problems, please let us know. Talks were due to take place the day before our meeting, but had b e e n delayed until the following w e e k about the revamp of A v . Mediterraneo where the new road, pavements, benches, trees are to be put in place, as we mentioned in last months issue. The board has now gone up at the post office roundabout with a cost of the work to be 229,189 euro The start is imminent of the new

market place. This area will not just be for the Thursday market, as the space will be used for many other activities that are being planned. There will be more space to take on more traders and it is hoped to start a market during one or two evenings. The Council are hoping to organise a second hand stall m a r k e t possibly every two weeks for the public to set up and sell their own goods. The area will also be used for holding various fiestas, Fairs etc. When there are large functions at the sports hall the area will also be available for car parking. The park which we spoke about last month, being constructed by MASA, is to be officially opened in the very near future. There are some other plans for the area there, which we may be able to tell you about next month. A Spanish law that was introduced over 10 years ago, is now being implemented in Santa Pola and Gran Alacant. There are now two full time police, not in uniform, who are watching for

dog owners allowing their animals to leave their mess everywhere. If you are stopped by the police and have not registered your dog you could be fined. You are also responsible of notifying the Town Hall if your dog dies or you no longer have the dog, so that it can be taken off the register. Dog dirt and dumped garden waste is being targeted to improve the look of our Urbanisation. All fines will be paid via your SUMA and if individuals cannot be caught dumping rubbish by the bins it will be the community who will be charged, so everyone ends up paying the fine. Below is the official communicate supplied to us by the Town Hall: Dog control campaign
The City of Santa Pola has launched a campaign to remind dog owners their obligation to register their canine pets in the municipal census, which will facilitate their identification and control of mandatory vaccines to be administered to all pets. Loreto Serrano presented the campaign that is developed jointly by the departments of Health, & Housekeeping, Public Safety and the different neighborhoods, "whose objectives are, first, update the municipal census and inform dog owners of compulsory registering them, and instill another and attempt to control the droppings on the street, which unfortunately, are too common. " "It is not new, said the Mayor, but it has been a requisite requiring all dogs to be entered in a municipal census, and that's what we want to remind owners. We are counting on
6
the work of local police, who asked veterinarians and collaboration of pet shops to inform their customers to go to the second floor of City Hall and formalize the animal's passport and identity card of the owner, in addition to paying an administrative fee of 10 euros. In the case of dangerous animals owners must request a special license. Serrano added that "the measure is having an effect, because in recent weeks we have seen an increase in the census, which now has 366 dogs enrolled, a figure that is still very small when you consider the number of pets that exist in the municipality. At the moment the police are not issuing fines, but people should know that if your pet does not have the necessary papers the owners may be punished. " As the Councillor for Cleaning Loreto Serrano, hinted that "however much you clean, Santa Pola still presents an image of dirt by the multitude of dog excrement on the pavements. While many homeowners are aware, there are others who do not collect and this goes against the health and image of our town, so we beg your cooperation." In this regard, "there is already a significant penalty for this offense, but our goal is not to fine, but to keep our town clean. Some people complain that we give them no bags to collect the droppings, but we think the responsibility of having an animal includes the bags provided, not wanting to put the onus on the council". Loreto Cascales, Councillor of Gran Alacant, insisted that "even in our area, where there are a large number of dogs, we need the cooperation of citizens to keep the
7
streets clean of feces."
able to organise something.
On March 3rd there is to be another Big fight night at the GA sports centre. Watch out for the posters.
We sometimes hear it said that Santa Pola does not advertise the area enough. This is not true, they are always at various Tourist Fairs. We will have to mention these more. Our Councillor for Tourism, last month was in Brussels to promote Santa Pola at the 54th edition of the International Tourism Fair of Belgium, a country which has increased the number of visitors to
We did say about the fountain not working again. Loreto telephoned people concerned and was told there was an electrical fault. The â‚Ź9 million new marina in Santa Pola is now well under way, and will include shops, bars, and restaurants. This has not been funded by our Town Hall, but in fact by private enterprise. Again in Santa Pola, the ongoing saga of the indoor swimming pool. Since the builder went bust there have been many problems. With the facility 85% complete a new builder has agreed to undertake the work to hopefully complete the project. The Town Hall does not fully own this enterprise it is a joint venture partly funded by the Town Hall and public enterprise. Whilst recently in the GA post office, an elderly lady was having great difficulty in communicating her wishes as she could not speak Spanish. Yes we know everyone should learn the language, but many people are elderly so it is more difficult. People have told us they are unhappy that the person behind the counter cannot speak more than one language. We are told that if enough people sign a petition, we can forward it to the post office to help with this issue. Please email or phone us and if there is enough interest we may be

our town. At the fair are present, under the umbrella of TurespaĂąa, three municipalities of the Costa Blanca, Santa Pola, Calpe and Xabia, Oropesa del Mar, the Valencian Agency of Tourism and Camping Federation of Valencia. Santa Pola's stand received a visit from the Ambassador of Spain in Brussels, Silvia Iranzo Gutierrez, who had accompanied the Spanish delegation at the fair on the opening day of the event. There are so many good people on Gran Alacant, doing good things, for others. This month we would like to mention the Gran Alacant Bowls Club.

They instigate much fund raising, not only for their club, but also for local charities. These people and many like them, beaver away, for no monetary reward, helping others. In one week in January they organised various fund raising events. We attended their auction and horse racing night at Monte Mar, where a lovely meal was included in the evening. The auction was compered expertly with many a laugh, by Mike Farrelly the club chairman. There followed three horse races where bets were placed to raise even more funds. will be having their "Walk for Life" again this year on Sunday 29th April from 10.00a.m. until Midday and we start from El Clot. Last weekend (4th & 5th of February) the 1st Football Sala Tournament was held in Gran Alacant, organized by GRD Monte de Santa Pola, which had a great welcoming by local residents. 6 teams participated in the event, all of them showing a great sporstmanship and passion for football. The winner of the tournament was the Athletic Team Polamar with a result of 6-0 against the Chubas Team. The 3rd place was for the team of GRD Monte de Santa Pola B. We would also like to mention that a trophy was presented to the Freiduria Hispania Team for its participation, dedication & passion, showing values of humility, fellowship & sportsmanship.

Fire on Gran Alacant Dear Editor,
Thought you might find this a useful story:
On Monday 13th February about 5.30 p.m. things dramatically changed behind Novamar 3, as a fire started in the ravine. In minutes the fire was spreading but how it started no one knows. With the speedy intervention and cooperation of residents of all nationalities, the barrier of language was overcome, as between us buckets and hosepipes appeared. What was potentially a major incident and a danger to the properties at the top of the ravine was overcome by neighbours working together for the common good. Eventually the Guarda Civil arrived, followed by the fire brigade who put out the smouldering remnants. The incident reminds us of the need to be vigilant and that even on a cold winter's day the beautiful pine trees that enhance our region can so easily become an instrument of great danger. Above all this little crisis in the life of our urbanisation confirms that in times of mutual need the many nationalities who make this region their home can work purposefully together in harmony and goodwill. Regards,
Haydon Wilcox a home owner on holiday in Gran Alacant

A recipe from
Sandra’s Cookbook
which you can read online at:- www.sandrascookbook.com compiled by Sandra Bonathan (not Sandra from this magazine)
Chocoholic Chocolate Mousse Cake A great celebration cake, made for sharing! Ideal for family visits so you won't have to eat it all yourself! It is also VERY easy, as long as you read the directions carefully before you start. The one in the pictures was also coated with a chocolate ganache but I think it is better without that. submitted by Sandra (0) on 5th February 2012
Ingredients Dry Ingredients • 1 ¾ cups plain flour (260g) • 2 cups sugar (450g) • ¾ cup cocoa powder (75g) (not the sweetened chocolate drink) • 1 tsp salt • 2 tsp bicarb of soda • 1 tsp baking powder Wet Ingredients • 1 tbsp lemon juice • scant cup full fat or skimmed milk (225ml) • ½ cup vegetable oil (225ml) • 3 medium eggs ( don't use large or the mix will be too runny!) • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 1 cup hot water or black coffee (225ml) (using 1 shot real coffee or 1 tsp instant powder Mousse • 414 ml chilled whipping cream • 85ml hot water (can add tsp instant coffee if you like) • 340g chocolate • 50g butter • 1 tbsp vanilla extract • 2.8g leaf gelatine ( a bit of maths needed, use the weight of the pack and number of sheets in the pack to work out how much that is. Different brands are different sizes!)
Method Cake 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Mousse 1.
Put all the dry ingredients in a large bowl and mix well. If you want to sift it you can, but it is not necessary. Put the lemon juice (you can use a squeezy one) in the bottom of the cup and fill with milk. Leave for a moment and then stir. It will thicken. Put all the wet ingredients except hot water/coffee into a large jug. Stir. Mix wet and dry ingredients together and stir with a spatula until combined. Add the hot water/coffee and stir again. Pour into two lined 8 x2 inch round tins. Bake at 180c (not fan oven) for about 35 min until just firm in centre. If using a fan oven bake at 160c and test after 25 min. A tooth pick inserted into the middle should come out clean. Cool in tins for half an hour, then remove from tins but keep in paper lining until cold.
Gently melt the chocolate, butter, water and vanilla until just melting, a couple of lumps can be stirred smooth but don't over do it. 2. Put gelatine in some COLD water to soften for a couple of minutes. 3. Heat about 70ml of the cream until hot to touch but not boiling. 4. Squeeze out the water from the gelatine and stir the gelatine into the cream to dissolve it. 5. Add to the chocolate mix and stir well. 6. Allow to cool to just about blood temp. 7. Whip remaining cream until it leaves a trail with the whisk. 8. Gently fold into the chocolate until well mixed. 9. Set aside while you prepare the cake. Construction 1. Cut each cake into two layers 2. Place bottom layer on serving plate. 3. Make a deep collar to fit around the bottom layer from doubled greaseproof or a sheet of acetate. Tape or staple it together and place around cake. It needs to be as high as your finished cake will be. (If you have a deep, loose bottom cake tin the right size, you can use the rim of that to make it easy!) 4. Pour in mousse layer, gently place next cake layer on top. Chill if necessary before adding next layer. 5. Build up cake with alternate layers until complete. Depending on the depth of your mousse, you may have enough to coat the cake too.

This month there are not too many fiestas going on, just getting ready for Holy Week next month. There is only one parade of Moors and Christians in Villafranqueza (north Alicante) 15th to 19th. If you do not want to go to the big fiesta in Valencia you can enjoy “Fallas” in Benidorm, Calpe, Denia or Pego. Here in The Costa Blanca as Iʼve told you this month is very quiet but in Valencia takes place one of the biggest fiestas in Spain “las Fallas” the programme is too long but there are parades, floral offerings, this event is very emotive, spectacular fireworks, dancing and music everywhere, and of course the most impressive “Mascletaes” (powerful firecrackers). Byebye.

An old man walks into the barbershop for a shave and a haircut, but he tells the barber he can't get all his whiskers off because his cheeks are wrinkled from age.
The barber gets a little wooden ball from a cup on the shelf and tells him to put it inside his cheek to spread out the skin. When he's finished, the old man tells the barber that was the cleanest shave he's had in years. But he wanted to know what would have happened if he had swallowed that little ball.
The barber replied: "Just bring it back tomorrow like everyone else does".

This Black Lab cross is quite timid but very appealing. ANAL GLANDS Tel: 966 698 569
Anal glands are two structures placed at both sides of the anus (at 3 and 9 o’clock when compared to a watch). These glands produce a peculiar smell which is different if we are talking about a male or a female (different for dog’s nose, not ours, of course). In some animals such as skunks, the glands had become a defensive mechanism, because they can squeeze them when they want, and the horrible smell of the liquid make the possible predators go away. In some other animals, such as civets, the liquid from their glands is the main ingredient of some expensive perfumes: we are talking about the musk. Anal glands don’t have a digestive role: they don’t help the defecation mechanism, and animals which have had them removed, have a perfectly normal life. The smell of the glands is very persistent and difficult to remove from the clothes. For this reason, lots of ferrets have their glands removed in order to attenuate their peculiar smell. In case of healthy dogs and cats, the smell of their glands is normally not a problem, because they get empty when they go to the toilet, and the rest of the time the liquid doesn’t come out (except when they get extremely nervous or scared. In this case, the owner usually believes that some poo escaped, but the problem was just that the animal was so tight that the anal glands got self-squeezed). Normally, when an animal is being groomed, we check the anal glands, and we squeeze them if they are too full of liquid. We normally do it when the animal is being shampooed, for avoiding the bad smell. If we shampoo our pet at home, it’s a good idea to learn to check the glands. The Vet will show us how to do it. In some dog breeds such as French Bulldog and Pug, the glands are placed more “internally” than normal. In this case, draining them out is a task for the Vet. How often do the glands need to be done? It depends on the individual. Some of them, every 2 weeks, and some other ones, never. The owner has to keep his eye on symptoms such as self-biting of the zone, and dragging the bottom on the floor. This indicates it’s time to do it. If they are done too often without a reason, they may start having problems as well. The opposite problem is quite common: lots of owners just don’t know these glands exist, and they don’t realize until it’s late. And, what would happen when left for too late? Of course, if the liquid cannot get out of the gland properly it becomes thicker and thicker, then it gets infected and finally it develops an abscess which sooner or later will open and start draining pus. This normally looks horrible, and may be quite painful, but it’s not life-threatening at all. In some cases it may affect the two glands at the same time. When the glands get infected, visiting the Vet becomes absolutely necessary in order to provide a right antibiotherapy, and to make sure the gland and the perforated skin heal properly. A low number of animals suffer from these anal glands abcesses very often (several times a year). In these cases what we recommend is to have the anal glands completely removed, before they evolution to a cancer. In some breeds (German Sheperd), problems with anal glands have an autoimmune basis, which require a specific treatment. Anyway, it’s a good idea, in every dog, to learn from the Vet how to check and clean the anal glands if necessary.

WHAT’S THAT? IN THE CLOT?
by Mark Etheridge
Spot the difference....
One is a Starling (proper name European Starling) and the other is a Starling (proper name Spotless Starling) and both can be seen in Gran Alacant. The Spotless Starling is the Spanish version of the European Starling and is common and resident all year round, but in winter, hundreds of thousands of European Starlings come to our area and quite large mixed flocks of both species can be found not only in the Clot but around the urbanisations as well. So how do you tell the two apart? The obvious answer is that the Spotless Starling hasn’t got any spots, well, maybe just very faint ones if you’re being pedantic. But when you see the two birds side-by-side, the Spotless is always a darker bird, and looks more “oily” in appearance. The Spotless is yet another of those Spanish birds which are mega rarities in the UK, but are so easy to see here that some British birders soon become rather blasé about them – this is a shame because they are interesting and entertaining to watch!
The European Starling is a very confident bird, easy to see at close quarters in gardens and even city centres, but for some reason the Spotless Starling is a much more wary bird – it took me many long photographic sessions to get the shot which was taken from the main hide in the Clot. They are great bathers, and the best time to catch them is in the late afternoon when they come down for a wash and brush-up before retiring for the night.
Starlings are great mimics, and can cause confusion among even experienced birdwatchers by copying the calls of other species – I have heard Curlew, Golden Oriole, Oystercatcher, Blackbird, Robin and many other calls only to be confronted with a good old Starling, only I didn’t call it that when I realised what it was. Older readers may remember the “Trimphone” of the 1970’s which had a distinctive ring – it wasn’t long before irate householders were wondering why they could hear their phones ringing but there was no-one on the line; they need have looked no further than their rooftops for the answer. There is a theory about Starlings that one of their calls (a long whistle that starts high and descends) is in mimicry of the sound of falling bombs, but obviously without the bang at the end. It is said that this call originated during the Second World War, but only the veterans of that conflict can tell us if this is true. The Spotless Starling is known as Estornino negro (Black Starling) in Spanish; the European Starling is Estornino Pinto (Spotted Starling). See you next month

SANTA POLA 1/2 MARATHON
The XXIII International Marathon Mitja Vila de Santa Pola crowned the overall winner, the Kenyan and Ethiopian Rose Tigabu Chelimo Gebremariam. The event "remains the best half marathon in Spain." The fishing village was adorned with flags and pictures of all kinds and the balconies of apartments and houses lined the track. Another part of the test which has the approval of the runners are the 11 points of animation that are located along the circuit. This time in 5 of them were animated and live bands in the other 6 music played with a lot of well-selected pace for disjockeys. photo supplied by Town Hall photographer: José Juan López
With regard to the seasonal tourist town traders agree that "there should be a half marathon in each month of the year." This clearly reveals the economic momentum it has meant to the city in terms of hospitality, cuisine and commerce in general, the weekend of the half marathon santapolera. With a temperatures of between 18 ° and 20 ° and a west wind, runners enjoyed a wonderful day to practice outdoor sports. And by the role of brokers, you should quote the volunteers who helped make everything a success. Security Forces, Personal Health, children in the supplies, the organization's 250 volunteers, riders of Moto Club Santa Pola and local city departments. The town of Santa Pola completely turns this half marathon and the feeling is that participants have their towns and villages they come from. The prediction of Mayor Miguel Zaragoza may soon be fulfilled: "I hope to be mayor when the half marathon l0.000 reach the athletes."
