Hello everyone What a mild winter we have had out here on Gran Alacant. We should think ourselves very fortunate living here. Unlike our daughter Kelly, who lives in Canada. Our front cover picture shows the icicle on her home in minus 20 degrees temperatures. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. It´s nice to see places opening up again after their winter break, and people sitting outside enjoying a drink or food in the sunshine. As our Camila now has her own business to run, her boyfriend Adrian is helping her with our magazine deliveries and money collecting. Wishing you all a very HAPPY EASTER, don´t eat too many easter eggs!!!! Have a good month Sandra & Barry Our little dog from the front cover has hidden herself away in the magazine, can you find her? Last month she was at Elche football.

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news, including that from our Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005. It is our perogative at the magazine, NOT to update this 2005 picture, as we all looked a great deal younger!!! We start this issue with some feedback from last months magazine.

One of our readers took notice of the article about volunteers needed at the horse rescue centre. He went along on the Sunday afternoon and arranged to go over on a regular basis to help. Please if anyone has time to spare, it is a very rewarding experience, as told to us by other regulars. The articles last month about the evil caterpillars became very poignant with a phone call from a resident who´s

dog was harmed last month in this way. (Picture courtesy and by permission from Manuel)

kind

An email from the dog owner. I would like your magazine to convey thanks to Manuel and Sergio and Liliana at Gran Alacant Exotics Veterinaria for saving my dog in quick time, and to warn other dog owners to keep away from the pines and the caterpillar procession as it crosses the roads, footpaths and streets.

4

Best regards, Mike

A Town Hall press release to us: Environment councilor, Francisco Martin, reported that the City of Santa Pola is conducting a treatment against pine processionary caterpillars in parks and public gardens, schools and suburban areas near residential areas. It has also been transferred to the Department of Environment existing problems with the proliferation of these tracks in the mountains to take appropriate measures. On the other hand, caution is advised where you see processionary caterpillar bags hanging from the pine trees for people who roam the mountains and pets that may wander through this environment. The Town Hall are out and about trying to destroy as many caterpillar nests as possible at the moment. -------------------------------------Info we gave out last month about the cinema trips, prompted this email:Hi Barry and Sandra, I was really pleased that you mentioned the cinema trip, including a meal at La Matera organised by Alan. My partner and I had the pleasure of going on Thursday 31st January and thoroughly enjoyed it! It was agreed by everyone who was there that it was great value for money and a brilliant night out. How nice to see somebody being proactive to promote their business in an original way, offering a great service to the community. Previously we

were not aware the Pola Max cinema showed films in English, and whilst you may make your own way there and simply pay your entrance, I highly recommend making use of this facility. The bus picks you up in Gran Alacant, takes you to the restaurant where you can choose to dine at the steakhouse or the Italian, then takes you on to the cinema, returning you to Gran Alacant after the film! Hopefully this will be an ongoing success and be well

supported by the local community! Michael. Monte y mar.

We have made the trip ourselves and thoroughly enjoyed the whole evening. -------------------------------------We were contacted by residents who had had their cars and properties vandalised, one night between 11.30pm and midnight. The parents of these kids or someone who knows them, may

well be aware of the culprits, or are the parents not even bothered they are roaming the streets that time of night, causing mayhem. Such a shame that this mindless type of thing is allowed to go on. The most important thing to do in any case, such as this, is to go to the G.A.Council Office from 10am to noon, where there should be a policeman in residence. It must be reported and a denuncia made even if you do not know the persons concerned. This officially brings the case to the police attention. -------------------------------------The job offer in last months issue, brought eight applicants, four of which have filled the vacancies. -------------------------------------The City of Santa Pola on February 14th St.Valentines day, honoured twenty couples celebrating their golden weddings after

living together for the last fifty years. The emotional ceremony was held at the House of Culture at 19 pm and featured performances by the Choir of Santa Pola. It has become a tradition every February 14th this event is organized by the Council of Celebrations to publically congratulate those residents in Santa Pola. This time the event was crowded because twenty couples received cards and some gifts from the mayor Miguel Zaragoza and the Councillor for Fiestas, Ana Blasco. -------------------------------------Pictures in this issue and many more on our website at: www.granalacantadvertiser.com

of the celebrations at the Spanish restaurant Hispania in recognition of the Carabasi Complex being open for 10 years. There was, free beer, free paella, free tapas and music all afternoon and evening. One of the local motorbike clubs arrived with many bikes on view. -------------------------------------The new market has again hit a problem which will be resolved soon. You may remember that the company doing the work also had problems earlier which were resolved before continuing the works. The contract for completion expires next month, so all should be completed on time. The asphalting is the next job. -------------------------------------You may think it has all gone quiet on the new school to be built on Gran Alacant. Wheels are turning in the background and we may soon have some good news to report. -------------------------------------A big campaign is to begin by the police not against dogs, but against their owners. Everyone has had time to get in place the necessary paperwork for their dogs. So now the police will be checking. No paperwork will result in fines. Also the campaign is to be issuing big fines for owners letting their dogs mess everywhere without clearing it up. It is the owners responsibility to clear up after their dogs. There will be no excuses when the fines are issued. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!! -------------------------------------SEE NEXT PAGE

MONTEMAR BOWLS AND SOCIAL CLUB (Sponsored by Super Valu) Montemar Toreadors in Southern League Division C The Toreadors broke their losing streak by winning the next two games against Country Bowls Harvesters and La Siesta Silvers by 12-2 and 10-4 respectively. They then lost two more games and won one. Montemar Matadors in Southern League Division A Following on from last year, the Matadors continued on their winning ways against Emerald Isle Cavaliers and La mariner Sharks by 14-0 and 10-4 respectively and were briefly top of the league. They came down to earth against the San Miguel Jaguars by 5-9, but won the next against El Rancho Mustangs by 11-3. Sadly they lost the next two matches against Greenlands Oaks and Country Bowls Ramblers by 4-10 and 2-12 respectively. With four matches remaining it's all to play for. Montemar Picadors SABA League The past month or so has seen an improvement for the Picadors. Of the five games played they have won three, drawn one and lost one the best result being a 14 -0 trouncing of Emerald Isle Moonrakers. They are now above the Novilleros in this league. Montemar Novilleros SABA League After the fine recovery early on in the year the Novilleros have won only one of their last five games, They drew one away to Greenlands Chestnuts and beat their rivals the Picadors by 11-3. Montemar in the Winter League Montemar managed to win two of their next seven games, lost three and drew one. This is a tough league and some of the games are far flung. Montemar Mixed Rinks Tournament On the weekend of 16th/17th February the Montemar Bowls Club staged the annual

Montemar Mixed Rinks Trophy Event. Twenty three teams from the Costa Blanca plus one from Mojacar contested the event. After a day and a half bowling, mainly under cloudy skies the twenty four teams were reduced to four and this brought us to the final stages. The Montemar club were quite successful in getting five teams into the last six and then two into the last four. The semi finals placed the two Montemar teams against each other, whilst the other one was between teams from Greenlands and San Luis. Following two days of very competitive bowling the eventual winners were the team from San Luis and they were presented with the trophy and their individual prizes by the owner of Montemar Don Antonio Martinez. The competition secretary, who organised the event, would like to thank Liz and Sue for being in control; the Umpires who officiated; Mo and George for assisting with the raffle; David Tutton for taking the photographs; the staff in the bar and bowls complex and, finally, all the teams who took part. The four teams who reached the final stages were as follows: 1st San Luis – Keith Jones, June Jones, Colin Lindgren, Colin Jackson 2nd Montemar – Barrie Woodfine, Pauline Woodfine, John Corbet, Danny King 3rd Greenlands – Ronnie Cairns, Lynne Greenland, Ian Kenyon, Steve Cantley 4th Montemar – Bill Young, June Young, Harry Dobson, John Cooper (pictures opposite) During our charity week Montemar bowls club raised €585.50 for our chosen charities. Thank you for all who contributed. For any information about joining our club or fixture details please contact the club captain Colin Armitage. Tel: 966 619 010 Ext. 01066.

RVERY SUNDAY CA OPEN EVERYDAY 45

Hi Barry & Sandra, Following your 2 page article in last month's Gran Alacant Advertiser, I took it on myself to visit and to have a look for myself the Horse Care facility outside Rojales. As an animal lover, and having been brought up on a farm in Ireland, I was keen to see the conditions here and to know what kind of "volunteer" work was at hand. Having met the owners, Rod & Sue, on a Sunday (this is the only day of the week that the centre is open to the public), and seen some of the animals (it's not just horses - there's also donkeys, ponies, pig, turkey, chickens, dogs - all abandoned), I immediately offered to give one day a week voluntarily helping out at the centre. Rather than helping out for a few hours a day, every day, I choose to devote one full day a week. So last Tuesday, 12th February, I packed my bag with working clothes - old jeans, boots, gloves, sweater - bottled water and sandwiches, and headed for Rojales. From Gran Alacant, the journey time was approximately 25 minutes. On my arrival, I was introduced to other volunteers - Pedro from Poland, Julio from Santa Pola, and a girl from Elche. If already you're a dog owner, then you know that dog pooh has to be cleaned up and disposed of every day. And that

your pet has to be fed a few times a day. That's basically what you'll be doing here. Except multiply that by 51 - and thats just how many horses, ponies and donkeys are held here. Most of these abandoned animals are kept outdoors in fenced-off paddocks, others are housed indoors in stables because of the injuries bestowed on them. Buckets, shovels, brushes and wheelbarrows make the task of cleaning up horse dung much easier. And with Spring finally in the air, working outdoors under the sun, stroking the animals, and conversing with others make the task more easy. Don't worry! You are not being timed, you're not on camera or CCTV. Treat it

46

as doing some good. And even as a language exchange. Meet new friends. And you can even grab a free coffee along the way. 51 horses is a lot of upkeeping - and not just cleaning out paddocks & stables. These animals have to be fed, and watered, and their hooves cleaned out. The cost to shelter these abandoned, unwanted, badly nourished or ill treated animals is over 1,500 euros a WEEK, over half of this amount goes on food alone. This Horse shelter really need help. It is not just volunteers for helping out, but they rely on donations. Your unwanted clothes or books or dvds or electrical goods can be offered to the centre, so as to raise funds through their charity shops.. Or any type of donation would help enormously. Go along any Sunday between 1pm and 4pm, when they are open to the public. A full restaurant menu is available each Sunday. I am "volunteering" my Tuesdays to the centre, 10am to 4pm. Who knows but only for the charitable work that Rod & Sue are undertaking in this abandoned horse centre, then probably our burgers and lasagne would be containing much less than "100% beef". You will find more information and a location map and directions at: www.easyhorsecare.net

PS. A car is necessary. Public buses do not pass here. If anyone would like to visit the centre and do not have transport, then you can contact me. Mike (Arco Iris Bed & Breakfast) arcoiris.santapola@gmail.com

Hi everybody, In this month there are plenty of celebrations, wherever you go from 24th to 31st of March you can attend to Holy Week processions. Sunday the 1st is Palm Sunday. procession, if you want to see the best one declared of International Tourism Interest, is the one held in Elche. If you can’t come to see every procession in Santa Pola and you have to choose one, I recommend to see the biggest that takes place on Friday the 29th. In the Fortress-Castle there from 28th to 31st a Medieval Market will be held . There is only one parade of Moors and Christians in Villafranqueza (north Alicante) 15th to 19th. If you do not want to go to the big fiesta in Valencia you can enjoy “Fallas” in Benidorm, Calpe, Denia or Pego. In Valencia takes place one of the biggest fiestas in Spain “las Fallas” the programme is too long but there are parades, main days 14th to the 19th, floral offerings, this event is very emotive, spectacular fireworks, dancing and music everywhere, and of course the most impressive “Mascletaes”(powerful firecrackers. This is all this month.

A recipe from

Sandra’s Cookbook

which you can read online at:- www.sandrascookbook.com compiled by Sandra Bonathan (not Sandra from this magazine)

Lemon Luscious Cakes

These cakes are so light and airy, no one would ever guess how easy they are to make. Dry ingredients, wet ingredients, stir together and bake. When cold you can decorate with whatever frosting you like. I use a simple glacé icing. This is a forgiving mix, so for all Americans out there, it is in cup measures! (I shake my flour in the tub, dip cup and level).

Ingredients

Dry ingredients 2 ½ cups plain (All Purpose) flour (mine is 10% protein) - 2 cups sugar - 1 tsp baking powder - 1 tsp salt - 2 tsp bicarb of soda Wet ingredients 3 med eggs - 1 tbsp lemon juice, topped up to 1 cup with milk, stirred 1 tsp lemon extract - ½ cup oil - 1 cup hot water Optional frosting 10 generous tbsp icing sugar - yellow colouring - lemon juice to mix - decorations

Method

Put all the dry ingredients in large bowl, preferably one with a pouring lip. Use a whisk to blend them all together. Put all wet ingredients (EXCEPT WATER) in a jug and stir. Put contents of jug into the dry ingredients and stir together until well mixed. Add the cup of hot water and stir until the mixture is blended. Pour into muffin cases (makes about 16 large). The mix should not rise a lot, fill to about 3/4 full. Bake at 180c for about 15 min. Keep a close eye on them as the tops will start to burn if left too long. The cakes should be just a little golden on top, fairly flat (easier to ice) and just firm. Cool on wire racks. For icing Mix sugar and colouring with enough juice to make a spoonable icing.

He has been a Funeral Director for 20 years and is just the person to help us with our patients. He can assisst us in emergencies such as sudden or unexpected deaths actually at the hospital, which is such a sensitive issue, especially with the procedures and arrangements for the Funeral with the documents and certificates which need signing. WHAT’S THAT? IN THE CLOT?

by Mark Etheridge

All property owners, whether here in GA or elsewhere, will know that if you don't do basic maintenance then the state of your property will quickly nosedive. It makes sense therefore to ensure you do repairs as and when they are required.

It seems that over the past two or three years, some areas of the Clot have also been allowed to fall into disrepair, particularly the wetland areas. It is usually the case that, left to its own devices, a wetland will eventually naturally revert to scrub and woodland unless it is actively managed both to prevent this and provide an enhanced environment for the wetland species.

It is good to report then, that during February there was considerable maintenance and planting activity going on in and around the main pool. This is the ideal time for it to be done, causing the least amount of disruption to the indigenous wildlife when they are at the quietest time of the year, prior to the breeding season and before spring takes a hold.

For those of you not able to get down to the area, what is happening on site is this. The reeds around the perimeter of the main pool have been cut down, which might on the face of it appear to be an adverse development, but it allows for new reed growth and the removal of old dead reeds which are clogging up the ground and allowing the build-up of vegetation litter which can cause reed die-back.

Also of note is that the scrape area alongside the pool is being regenerated after three years of total neglect. The perimeter channels are once again full of water, the dead vegetation has been cleared and a good sign was that when I first saw what was being done, there were two Green Sandpipers present which I haven't seen on the scrape for two years or more. Although the dry ground is bereft of plant life, it will not be long before this comes back and perhaps we can hope that once again the very rare Marbled Duck will breed in this area as it did a few years ago.

This work is all well and good, but the acid test will be whether a stable water supply can be provided. The main criticism to be levelled against the management of the Clot has been the frequency with which the water levels have been allowed to degenerate, with long periods when large areas of the main pool were completely dry. It is to be hoped that those responsible for the Clot follow up this good work with an effective water level monitoring system. See you next month.
