We would like to thank the TOURISM COUNCILLOR for enabling Jose Manuel Blasco to join our magazines monthly column. Many of you will surely have met Jose at the Tourist Information Counter in Santa Pola. He always exudes enthusiasm for all that is happening in our area. Here are his suggestions of “Where to visit” and ‘What to see” for this month Hi everybody,
At the beginning of this month is the main period to see peach tree blossom in Cieza (Murcia). It would be a nice day out to visit “Santuario de la Fuensanta” in Calasparra and enjoy the beautiful scenery that nature offer us, take the country road RM-B19, to Cieza in the middle of the country side to see the best scenery. The only Moors and Christians parade this month take place in Villafranqueza, (North Alicante) Saturday 21st at 6pm.
In Valencia one of the biggest fiestas in Spain “Las Fallas” takes place. The programme is too long but there are parades on main days 15th to the 19th, floral offerings etc. This event is very emotive one with spectacular fireworks display, dancing and music everywhere, and of course the most impressive “Mascletaes” (powerful firecrackers). If you do not feel like going to Valencia you can always enjoy “Fallas” in Benidorm, Calpe, Denia or Pego. This is all for this month. Hello Everybody, Good weather has finally arrived and hopefully it’s to stay. It’s nice to see more people about after a really quiet couple of months. Don’t forget it’s St.Patrick’s day as well as Mother’s day this month, lot of enterainment being organised all around. Let’s hope you all got rid off your colds and enjoy yourselves this month in Gran Alacant. Have a good month, Ged & Lou Our little dog Zia and our cat Casper have hidden themselves away in the magazine, can you find them? Last month Zia was on p. 26 and Casper on p. 46

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, including that from a representative from the Town Hall, as we have since May 2005.
If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine - granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.co.uk Q: Hotel in Arenales Hi Ged & Lou, I was walking through Los Arenales and saw the derelict hotel site is still there with a 3 year old sign outside it and fences that are falling down. Can you give us an update on what is happening? As a suggestion, surely the Municipality can see that this site is both an eyesore and a danger to visitors. Can’t they simply flatten it and put a decent wall around the site to protect it if they can’t turn it back to a safe natural state? The benefits from such a positive action must outweigh the costs involved in keeping the buildings as they are, and it would improve the views from so many businesses opposite, which would make them more desirable places to visit. Kind Regards, Peter GA Advertiser Reply: The Arenales hotel comes under the Town Hall in Elche, not Santa Pola. As far as we are aware discussions about its future are still ongoing. Q: Electrocity Has anyone had the same problem as us? We have had a holiday home here in Gran Alacant for many years and had no problem with our electricity. However over the past eighteen months every time we return from England we have no power! We never have a problem while we are here and usually we turn the power off at the mains in the house. The electricians we have called out seem to think that our fuses are being stolen. We have been in contact with Iberdrola who have basically said nothing is wrong. If you have suffered how did you overcome this problem? Linda GA Advertiser Reply: Have any of our readers had a similar experience with their electricity supply? If so get in touch and share it with us.

BARRY’S BITS OF NEWS Q: Road markings Hi Barry, it was great to recently see road marking being refreshed, it would be even better to see road markings on roads in the Calle Canarias area. There are two junctions in particular with not idea of who has right of way, accident waiting to happen. Kind Regards, Jim GA Councillor Oscar Valenzuela’s Reply: Calle Canarias is a private road so you will need to contact the President of the urbanisation to request that markings are painted on these roads. ********** Q: Padron renewal When do you have to renew your padron. We did ours last month and were told it had to be renewed every 2 years. Friends went to renew theirs and were told it had to be renewed every 5 years. Which is correct? GA Councillor Oscar Valenzuela’s Reply: The correct answer is that EU citizens need to renew their padron every 5 years and non-EU citizens every 2 years. ********** HOSPITAL Unfortunately for me, I can give you an insight to having an operation in our Elche hospital. Again I was asked to be at the hospital for 6pm to have an operation first thing the next morning. I was back in the ward at 3pm after 16 staples in my spine. At ll am the next day I went home. For family they go to the waiting room where they are told that the operation was under way. When the procedure was complete your family name was called out and you then take the lift to level 1 where the surgeon will let you know how the operation went. Whilst waiting a drinks trolley came round with coffees and fruit juices. No charge... Free!

Q: AMBULANCE I see that Santa Pola are campaigning for another full time ambulance. Have any of our readers a story to tell when getting an ambulance to them? This obviously effects us all on Gran Alacant. ********** BIRD LIFE A lady who lives near the clot, loves watching all of the starlings swooping in together to roost. She asks if any other kind of bird swarm in this way. So I put this to our resident Clot man and here is his reply… A starling ‘murmuration’ (as it is called) is a lovely sight and quite common during the winter period. The interesting thing is that we have two species of starling in GA - the resident Glossy Starling and the Common or European Starling which only visits over the winter and is responsible for these large flocks (with perhaps a few Glossies joining in the fun!). They won’t be here for much longer, at the end of March they will migrate northwards leaving the Glossies behind. They don’t interbreed, so any starlings you see over the summer are always Glossies. The European Starling is a lighter colour than the Glossies in winter with a very speckled appearance, the Glossies are always a shiny black. The only other birds likely to form large flocks are the Swallows, which do this at the end of the breeding season in autumn, just before they depart for Africa. This only happens for a week or so, when the adults join up with the season’s juveniles, and they all migrate together. I have seen large flocks of other birds, most recently last autumn when there was a flock of 200 Ibis over El Hondo, but never in the thousands which the Starlings can form. Hope this is correspondent! Cheers Mark

WEEDS…….AGAIN These two pictures show just how our Town hall do not seem to care at all about our Gran Alacant. This area is continually overgrown with weeds, we can see it, why can`t the Town Hall see it too, or are they just not bothered.
GA Councillor Oscar Valenzuela’s Reply: As we mentioned before the original cleaning contract for Gran Alacant was based on 6000 residents. Since 2006 the number of residents dramatically increased and Gran Alacant has been continuously expanding. The old contract is not sufficient and we have been working really hard to put a new contract together that includes all of the current needs of Gran Alacant. The new contract is now finished and will be tendered out to a number of different cleaning companies. We were hoping it would become effective before the Summer 2020, however the legislation process could take up to 8 months from now. In addition to the new cleaning contract, we are now also working on a new fumigation contract (mosquitoes, cockroaches, caterpillars) and for the first time ever we are trying to plan a way to spray in conjunction with all urbanisations and the district of Elche. This will not completely get rid of all insects, but would reduce numbers significantly.

IMPROVING HEALTH CARE IN SANTA POLA
On February the 6th a meeting was held in Elche Hospital to discuss the quality of health care in Santa Pola. Mayor Loreto Serrano was in attendance alongside Councilors Gela Roche and Oscar Valenzela, a representative from the Gran Alacant neighbourhood association and Medical and Nursing Directors from Elche Hospital.
Among the issues raised was the need for a permanent ambulance service for the entire Santa Pola region, the continuing reform of the existing Medical Centre in Gran Alacant and the difficulties that arise when the population increases dramatically during the Summer Season. The Ministry of Health has subsidized the refurbishment to the Medical Centre and once an additional subsidy has been received, the works will continue later this year. The Councilor of Gran Alacant, Oscar Valenzuela, has asked for a plan to be put together or contracts made available, to help deal with the increased demands on the Health Service, especially Pediatrics, during the Summer months.

CONSTRUCTION OF A NEW SECONDARY SCHOOL (INSTITUTO) IN GRAN ALACANT In February the Mayor, the Councilor for Education, the Councilor for Finance and the Councilor for Gran Alacant had a meeting with the Inspector of Secondary Education (Institutos) to discuss the immediate plans to alleviate the existing issue of overcrowding in the two existing Institutos in Santa Pola, which is mainly due to the number of children from Gran Alacant. Although a new Instituto has been planned for Gran Alacant, construction will not be finished until 2024. In the meantime, new portacabins (barracones) will be made available for the 2020/2021 school year. The attendees visited the 2 proposed sites for the portacabins, the first is in between the existing Primary school and the site for the new Instituto and the second is near the sports centre. The Inspector of Education will discuss these 2 options with the relevant departments so that a swift decision can be made. He will then oversee the process to make sure that the chosen site is ready by September.

FIRST EVER CARNIVAL CELEBRATION On Friday the 21st of February, the first ever Carnival celebration was held in the car park of the Sports centre in Gran Alacant. It was a 2 hour event that started at 1730 and had been organised by the town hall and the commercial association of Santa Pola. For the first hour everyone was entertained by a puppet show about a bald King. The children enjoyed seeing all the different characters and laughed at their attempts to help the King, which included putting a mop on his head! The second hour was a fancy dress competition in two categories, individual and groups. There were lots of great costumes including Clowns, Superheroes, Harry Potter, Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Princesses, Fairies, Police and Fish.

HAZ LO QUE PUEDAS - DO WHAT YOU CAN PART 2 - COUCH TO 5K AND PARK RUN
BY GEOFF YOUNG If you have any health concerns about beginning an exercise regime like Couch to 5K, make an appointment to see your GP and discuss it with them first.
Can you do it?
Taking up running can seem like a scary prospect, especially if you feel out of shape or unfit. NHS Couch to 5K will help you gradually work up towards running 5K in just 9 weeks. What is Couch to 5K? Couch to 5K is a running plan for absolute beginners. It was developed by a new runner, Josh Clark, who wanted to help his 50-something mum get off the couch and start running, too. The plan involves 3 runs a week, with a day of rest in between, and a different schedule for each of the 9 weeks. How does Couch to 5K work? Probably the biggest challenge a new runner faces is not knowing how or where to start. Often when trying to get into exercise, we can overdo it, feel defeated and give up when we're just getting started. Couch to 5K works because it starts with a mix of running and walking to gradually build up your fitness and stamina. Week 1 involves running for just a minute at a time, creating realistic expectations and making the challenge feel achievable right from the start. Who is Couch to 5K for? Couch to 5K is for everyone. Whether you've never run before or if you just want to get more active, Couch to 5K is a free and easy way of getting fitter and healthier.
32
Tips on progression The programme is designed for beginners to gradually build up their running ability so they can eventually run 5km without stopping. The pace of the 9-week running plan has been tried and tested by thousands of new runners. You can, however, repeat any one of the weeks until you feel physically ready to move on to the next week. Structure is important for motivation, so try to allocate specific days of the week for your runs and stick to them. You may find your local running/athletics clubs hosting these programmes, as, sometimes, it is better to train with others of a similar standard. However, if you want to undertake this programme by yourself it is equally adaptable. Rest days Rest days are critical. Having one between each week's runs will reduce your chance of injury and also make you a stronger, better runner.Resting allows your joints to recover from what is a high-impact exercise, and your running muscles to repair and strengthen. Alternatively, you could do Strength and Flex on your rest days. This is a 5-week plan designed to improve your strength and flexibility, which will help your running. Aches and pains Some new runners starting the programme experience calf pain or sore shins (sometimes known as shin splints). Such aches can be caused by running on hard surfaces or by running in shoes that do not have enough foot and ankle support.

Always do the 5-minute warm-up walks before each run, and check that your running shoes are offering good support. For more information on preventing and treating injuries, read the page on sports injuries on the link below... You will have good runs and bad runs – accept it, and don't spend too much time analysing the how and why. Even a bad run is good for you. Once you achieve your first ever 5km, do not stop there. Across the world, but sadly not yet in Spain, there is a free 5km run every Saturday morning called Park Run. Whether you are in Sydney, London, Kuala Lumpur, New York, turn up on Saturday morning and take part. It attracts everyone from celebrities, Olympians to new starters. Some walk their dogs whilst others take the children for a walk. In fact, my local Park Run in Durham, which attracts around 500 runners every Saturday is made up of mainly women, who have gone through the Couch to 5km programme. We are trying to create a group of runners, or, would be runners in Gran Alacant of which there are 5 so far. If you want to join the group contact me on WhatsApp 0044/747 685 1356. We are in discussions with a local athletics club about membership and training sessions. They meet at 19.30 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Running in groups at set times is a good way to maintain your levels of motivation. See website: https://www.nhs.uk/livewell/exercise/get-running-with-couch-to5k/ and https://www.parkrun.com Download the app from Google Store or itunes, where you can also download the podcast

International Practicioner of Holistic Medicine, fully licensed & insured THE IMPORTANCE OF A GOOD FACIAL I done a little talk last month to some coffee morning ladies, which was a lovely morning and it has inspired me to write about the topic this month.
thing you start today! Our skin is the largest organ on our body, so it is very important to treat it with some TLC. Our faces are constantly on display to all the daily environmental toxins so a good facial once a month out with your daily ritual is a positive to add to your life. At the Reiki Room I provide a variety of different facial treatments, from the deep cleansing (which is a deeper more cleansing facial than the one you can give yourself at home), Anti-Aging (again this uses different techniques and strokes that your are unable to perform on yourself), Hot & Cold stone facials, Crystal therapy facials, Aromatherapy facials, or mini express facials to remedial work including Acne (extraction is used where required)
How many of you have a good daily skincare routine? It really is so very important. Facials are a great pamper to receive but that aside they are more than a beauty treatment, they are very holistic and great for the skin and overall wellbeing. It is never too early (wish my parents drummed it into me from a young age) or too late to start a good facial routine, so if you don’t already have one, male it the new

oils to the mix (especially Frankincense) and you have some great products. For sensitive, again there are essential oils to suit that need with a good grapeseed carrier oil to make your own perfect serum. I like to treat myself to some nice products, my favourite being Dr.Perricone, Neal’s Yard or Kiel’s products, but I also use the Verage collection by Doterra and this is used in many of the facials...this collection is a must have for all who love a great product.
Little Tips to Use At Home:
• Always wash your make up off at night, this is so very important to cleanse the pores. • Massage your creams & oils in upward motion to stimulate the circulation & circle motion around your eyes (avoid getting too close) • Cleanse, Tone, Serum & Moisturiser and a great tip before you moisturise is to apply a small layer of some hyaluronic acid- leave for 5 mins then apply your moisturiser, this is amazing for hydrating the skin even more and don’t be scared from the acid… the body produces small amounts of this naturally. • A little gentle skin brush once a month or so is good for stimulating and clearing any dead skin cells if you are not a fan of dermaplaning or acid peels. • Drink (or aim for) 2 litres of fresh water daily, add fresh lemon for an added bonus. • Like juicing? Go for all the greens- they are good for the skin. • Always ALWAYS use a daily moisturiser with an SPF of 30 regardless of what season it is! • Get your beauty sleep, aim for 7-8 hours (oh if only my kids allowed this!!) • Don’t stress about buying the expensive stuff, it’s not always what we put in our skin but more on how we apply it, of course it is important to get the right products to suit your individual type or preference. For dry skins a good shea butter cream or sweet almond oil is great, throw in some essential
I also love a lot of other non-pricy ones… you can get a decent daily SPF moisturiser from Avon. Mix it up, its not always of great importance on the make. Just like the muscles on our body our face muscles need a workout, even more so for those who like to buy into the cosmetic enhancement world - Botox for one freezes the muscles which cause layers of dormant toxins to sit stagnant whilst fillers sit over the top not allowing the pores to be completely cleansed - it is so important to keep the muscles working to avoid that shiny, waxy appearance. Regardless of your choice of facial, if it is carried out properly it will have amazing long lasting effects to diminish the fine lines and wrinkles and prolonging a more youthful appearance. Any questions you may have please get in touch today for a free consultation.

Hi all, Spring is around the corner and the good weather will be here soon but here in the North of Spain I think we have to wait a little bit more. I’ve been enjoying some of the old fashioned recipes from my nan and the last one Guiso de ternera “ Beef soup” was amazing! Hope you enjoy it. Mayka x
“Guiso de ternera” Let’s Start! If the butcher has not done it for you, cut the meat into small pieces. Put a pot on the fire, add the oil and when hot, brown the meat and put aside. In the same pot, if necessary add a little more oil, add the onion and minced garlic, sprinkle salt, leave a few minutes to lightly brown. It’s time to add the chilli if you want, remember that at the end of the cooking you must remove it! Add the peppers in strips, you can cut them the way you want, I liked to leave them that way because they have such a beautiful colour that it gives life to the stew. Stir, leave a couple of minutes. Add the beer. Add the tomato, add the sugar to balance the acidity of the tomato, the aromatic herbs, salt and black pepper, as soon as the whole begins to boil, lower the heat, put the lid on the pot and leave 15 minutes to take body We put the potatoes together and it is advisable to “peel them”, that is, cut the potato halfway with the knife and with a sudden wrist movement, break the next half. In this way the potato will release starch and thicken the sauce. We try how it goes with salt and add the potatoes and on top, add the meat, sprinkle salt and black pepper, cover the pot and leave on medium heat for about 25 minutes. We check that everything is ready, the meat, the potatoes and the sauce, rectify salt and serve with crusty bread off course. Enjoy all see you next month xxx

HIKING WITH HEIDI & OLLI THE PATHS LESS TRAVELED
Els Arcs
Driving Time: 1,5 hours Walking Time: 1,5 hours/7km Google maps directions: Ruta als Arcs de Castells de Castells
My name is Heidi and I come from Helsinki, Finland. With my husband Olli-Pekka and our 3 dogs we live in Gran Alacant and enjoy the brilliant Mediterranean climate and possibility of discovering new hiking routes all over our Alicante province and sometimes even a bit further. Ironically, I have a fear of heights, but I love the views from tops of the mountains too much to stay away. Our dogs are getting older so all the hikes need to be suitable for them too as they always go on our adventures with us. I also love photography and always take load of pictures from our hikes. The Municipal Natural Area “Els Arcs” was declared in 2005. It is located in the municipality of Castell de Castells, in the province of Alicante, in the Serra de la Serrella, and has an area of 401,33 ha. The arch rock formations are definitely a sight to experience. Panoramic views over the mountains and the valleys are truly beautiful. There are few houses around the
52
area, but at least we didn’t have any mobile connection starting from the parking. PNM Els Arcs is easy to find. Just put down “Ruta als Arcs de Castells de Castells” to Google Maps and it will pinpoint the very place to you where the route starts. You can park your car next to the dirt road. There’s an information sign showing you the marked path. You start from number 1 and make your way following the signs and the painted white/yellow stripes. You can choose which places you wanna visit. Definitely opt to see the arches.
THE PATHS LESS TRAVELED
HIKING WITH HEIDI & OLLI THE PATHS LESS TRAVELED
The whole route is about 7km depending which sights you will choose to see from the circular path (they have their own separate legs). Elevation was about 200 meters so you don’t have to be a mountaineer to manage this route. The scariest place for me was the surroundings of the arches as it is quite steep on both sides of them. Still I was really ecstatic to experience these arches. These arches have formed naturally in the Paleogene Period about 30 million years ago. The plants of the Paleogene Period are very similar to the plants that we have on earth today. The warm climate at the beginning of the period was perfect for the dense forest plants. As the climate cooled, open woodlands and grasslands became abundant. The grasses were important because they supported huge herds of grazing
animals. That’s when Mammals became the dominant animals. Hope you enjoy this hike, Until next month, Heidi & Olli x
CHECK LIST
Always when going on hikes check that: • Your Mobile Phone is fully charged • Water - climbing up is hard job & you will need it • Snacks (Remember to take all the garbage back down with you!) • Have good shoes for walking • Have small first aid kit with you • Have layered clothes. Up hill might be very windy and cold, even on a warm day. Coming down might be chilly, so extra dry t-shirt to change into if needed is not a bad idea • Always tell someone where you are going and when you’ll approx. be coming back

Out & About with Star & Ashlee Beach Cleaning and Water Sport Fun Hi my name is Star and I have been lucky enough to call Gran Alacant my home for over 11 years now. My 10 year old daughter Ashlee and I are often “Out & About” enjoying the local attractions and culture in this part of Spain. Over the next few months I will be sharing some of our experiences with you to encourage you to go “Out & About” yourselves and maybe learn a little bit about this beautiful place we call home. On Sunday the 2nd of February at 10:00, Ashlee and I joined a large group of people who had gathered in Arenales del Sol to participate in a beach clean and water sports event “Jornada de Limpieza de Playa y Deporte” that was organised by Club Deportivo Parres. As well as helping to clean the beach they also allowed anyone interested the chance to participate in some activities for €5 as long as they had pre-registered. The event started with a speech about plastic waste and the amount of different things that can be found washed up on beaches and the damage it causes to marine life. We were told that immediately after Storm Gloria, which hit us hard in January, the local council had organised a clean up of the beach, however, more waste has continued to arrive. Everyone was given large bags and gloves and we were split into groups to head off along the beach and collect rubbish.
68
As we were walking along we made sure to thoroughly shake all of the piles of seaweed and were quite surprised at how many bits of plastic and polystyrene balls there were. We also helped dig out a large towel/beach blanket that looked as though it had been buried for a long time. It was quite shocking to see how much damage there was to the boardwalks, the retaining walls to some of

the parking areas of the apartment blocks and the foot wash stations and their pipes. After an hour and a half we all headed back to the main square in Arenales and piled up all of the rubbish that we had collected. It was surprising how much there was and everyone felt a great sense of achievement. Then the adults and children that wanted to participate in the water activities were given wetsuits and headed off to change.
Ashlee was really excited and joined 2 other girls to carry a paddle board over to the beach. Once there the instructors found out which of the kids had previously tried paddle boarding and then let them go in groups into the sea. Initially they took it in turns kneeling and paddling on the board before they started to build up their confidence and were able to stand. They then organised a relay race where each child had to paddle to their teammate, switch and keep going until all 3 had had a go. Next they put all the boards side by side and the kids took it in turns to run across them. Then they put them end to end and finally arranged them in a circle so that the kids could chase each other
around. Finally they were able to paddle on their own, taking it in turns whilst their teammates swam beside them. After about an hour and a half everyone headed back to the shore, returned to the sports centre and changed back into their clothes. It was a really great day and Ashlee will definitely be going back and enjoying some more activities including Windsurfing, Surfing, Paddleboarding, Kayaking and Boating. There are many different options available including individual lessons, group activities, weekend clubs and Summer school. WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge
SHORT-TOED EAGLE rodents, but its appetite for snakes gives us a clue as to where it is most likely to be seen. One or two have appeared in the Clot over the past few years, but their preference is for cultivated areas and low scrub, ideally with a few tall trees or cliff sites to nest in – they only raise a single chick during the breeding season. Your obscure word for this month is ophidiophobia, which is the fear of snakes, horrible slimy things which will kill you if they get the chance by digging their fangs into you, or coiling round your neck and strangling you to death. All utter nonsense, of course (for the most part), but even when you tell some people that snakes aren’t slimy, and far more scared of you than you are of them, they still shudder with dread when they think of snakes, and no amount of persuasion will convince them otherwise. So flying in to the rescue for these deluded people is the champion for snake-haters, the Short-toed Eagle. It is an uncommon bird in our area, with a handful present over the winter; the numbers increase somewhat during the summer when more birds arrive from south of the Sahara where they have spent the winter. It is a mediumsized raptor, about the same size as the Booted Eagle which is fairly common in our area over the winter. As you can see from my photo, the Short-toed Eagle has very light underparts with a hint of barring, and a light brown head. Its alternative name of Snake Eagle gives a hint of its prey preferences, it will also take lizards, other birds and occasionally
82 82
The Spanish population is reasonably stable, with up to 3000 pairs present during the breeding season, and their range spreads throughout the Mediterranean basin eastwards towards Kazakhstan and India, however in these eastern areas it is a declining species due to habitat loss, shortage of prey and hunting. It does not occur in more northerly areas due to the lack of snakes, and has only been seen in the UK on one or two occasions. For a bird which relies so much on snakes as its main food source, it may be surprising to hear than unlike some other species which prey on snakes, it is not immune to snake venom. It is not unknown for the Shorttoed Eagle to have protracted struggles with larger snakes on the ground, as they need to take care that they themselves are not bitten. The Spanish name is Culebrera europea, and is well worth watching out for; they spend a lot of time soaring and hovering over suitable hunting ground, so keep your eyes peeled! You can see more photographs of birds from our area by visiting www.marketheridge.smugmug.com See you next month.

CORONAVIRUS AND PETS (WSAVA RECOMMENDATIONS)
Due to the pneumonia outbreak in China, caused by a coronavirus called 2019nCoV, WSAVA (World Small Animals Vets Association) has published an advisory document for its members, which is intended to answer some questions professionals and pets owners may ask about this health problem.
The outbreak started in December 2019, initially in the Chinese city of Wuhan, and a short time later, person-to-person transmission was confirmed. The exact source of the outbreak is still not known, but it is supposed to be linked to Huanan South China Seafood Market, a seafood and live animal wet market in Wuhan. So far, the animal species from which 2019nCoV “jumped” hasn’t been identified. Common coronaviruses which infect dogs and cats (producing a normally non-lethal diarrhoea in dogs and the fatal Feline Peritonitis in cats), DON’T belong to the same family of 2019-nCoV, and are not transmissible to people. Can 2019-nCoV infect domestic animals? Currently there is no evidence that pets or other domestic animals can be infected with 2019-nCoV, and, besides, there is no evidence that pets can be a source of transmission of the virus to people. Should I avoid contact with pets or other animals if I’m sick? Do not handle pets or other animals when sick. Although there hasn’t been reports of animals infected with 2019-nCoV, there are some other respiratory coronaviruses that may be transmitted and spread from people to animals, so, as a precaution, is a good idea to wear a facemask when handling animals if you are sick. What should I do if my pet or other animal becomes ill and was around a person with 2019-nCoV? If your pet or other animal becomes ill, call your veterinarian to let them know you are bringing a sick pet that was exposed to a person with 2019-nCoV. Do not take the animal to the practice until you have had a
86
discussion with clinic staff. Tell them about any contact the animal may have had with someone infected with 2019-nCoV. If my pet or other animal has been in contact with somebody who is sick, can they spread the disease to other people? We do not yet know if animals can get infected. We also don’t know if they can get sick from 2019-nCoV. So far, there is no evidence pets or other domestic animals can be a source of infection for people. What are the concerns regarding pets that have been in contact with people infected with the virus? While the virus is supposed to have emerged from an animal source, at this moment is spreading only person-toperson, mainly via respiratory droplets which are sprayed when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Once again there is no data or date that dogs or cats become infected with 2019-nCoV. What should be done with animals in areas where the virus is active? Despite there have not been reports of pets or other animals getting infected with 2019-nCoV, since there are some other kinds of respiratory coronaviruses that may spread and be transmitted from animals to people and vice versa, till we know more about this specific virus, avoid contact with animals and wear a facemask if you must be around animals or care for a pet. The same way, people diagnosed with 2019-nCoV should stay away from animals in order to avoid the hypothetic risk of transmission to animals, as a precaution. Should veterinarians start vaccinating dogs against canine coronavirus because of the 2019-nCoV? There are some coronavirus vaccines for dogs available at the market, but they are supposed to protect against digestive coronaviruses, not against respiratory ones, and as far as we know, there is no evidence of cross-protection against respiratory infections, so in this case the vaccine would make no difference.
