PETS New hygiene regulations will require dog owners to carry dog waste bags and sanitising liquid during pet walks. Anyone caught not complying with these new regulations will risk a fine of up to 750e. This comes as welcome news to residents who are sick of dodging dog excrement littered on pavements and public walkways. A local resident said “I can’t believe in this day and age some dog owners still don’t clean up after their dogs. It shows a complete disregard for other people living in the community. It’s lazy and it’s disgusting”. During the first weeks, the owners will receive warnings of the new measures; thereafter sanctions of up to 750 euros can be imposed. 6 PENALTY POINTS FOR DRIVING WHILST USING MOBILE PHONE It is illegal to use a handheld mobile phone or similar device when driving, stopped at traffic lights or queuing in traffic. HOW TO PREVENT OSTEOARTHRITIS

It is a chronic disorder and usually progresses slowly. There is no treatment that can definitively cure osteoarthritis, but with an appropriate one, symptoms can be alleviated, their evolution slowed down and, in many patients, optimize their quality of life.

The joints make up the skeleton and allow us to move freely. They have, in addition to bones, an sheath called the joint capsule, lined by the synovial membrane which produces synovial fluid. The bones do not normally rub against each other, since they are covered by a firm and elastic cartilage tissue.

It affects both men and women, but in women appears more frequently and with more symptoms. Osteoarthritis is a very common disease and is the most frequent among the joint conditions. To a greater or lesser degree, almost everyone over 70 years of age present it (generally more women), but it should be noted that only one small part of them will have symptoms (pain, stiffness or numbness or loss of joint function). Although it is not exclusive to old age.

In osteoarthritis, the cartilage progressively wears away (degenerates), and the bone tissue below suffers and reacts by forming “more bone” (“overgrowth of defense”, or vulgarly “parrot beaks”) or cysts (small holes), which are observed on radiographies. In addition, the synovial membrane thickens and as more fluid forms, causing some degree of inflammation and swelling.

It can be developed in one or several joints (generalized), compromising the joints of the fingers, the big toe (“bunion”), the knees, the hips and spine (cervical and lumbar). Osteoarthritis of other joints such as shoulders, elbows, wrists or ankles is infrequent and when it appears, it is a consequence of trauma, misuse, or other disease.

RENT OR NOT TO RENT THAT IS THE QUESTION Firstly, it is nice that January is behind us. It is a long month, and although it started cold and cloudy, the sun has finally returned, and when you find it, you will find the Brits, like moths around a light bulb. February and March will see Gran Alacant’s businesses come alive again, hopefully boosted by more visitors. Given that I have recently been involved in small business here, it has opened my eyes to how difficult it is. Spain has currently a left leaning government and a history of bureaucracy. We all know it loves nothing more than a rubber stamp. I had an email from a reader who is having a terrible time with a tenant who took a 6-month tenancy over the Covid period. The tenants were from a letting agency, but have turned out to be the tenants from hell paying neither rent nor utilities. It has meant the owners cannot visit their holiday home whilst the long drawn out eviction process runs its course, costing the owner thousands of euros. This is not a Spanish problem alone. The Covid problem has, I am sure, led to poverty where some tenants are left with little choice if they wish to avoid the street. Financial support is much less here than in the UK. The tenants previously mentioned however seem to be repeat offenders rather than a genuine case of hardship.

Private landlords, in particular in the UK, have been demonised, merely because the Government has sold off its own stock of rented housing. It is a problem yet again of their own making. Anyone who rents property here or in the UK needs to treat it as any other investment. You will have buying costs, licences and rules to adhere to. You must accept the possibility of loss. If you cannot, then do not let your home. If I buy equities, I have to accept they may fall, unfortunately if you rent property you face the risk of falling values and non-paying tenants. It is unfortunate but always a risk. On a more positive note by the time you read this the weather should be very spring like. In June, here we have St Juan, a festival of bonfires and fireworks. Did you know that in the city of Valencia they have it 15-19 March? Get on the train or jump in your car and go see. There is so much, so close to experience. It has been a tough couple of years but we face the new season with optimism and enthusiasm. Refurbished Bars and Restaurants wait to greet you, and we all look forward to welcoming you.

Disagree with anything? What an opinion you have discussed? Email me on : terry@montelinvestments.co.uk

GRAN ALACANT LADIES (GALS) UPDATE The quieter months in Gran Alacant have not impacted negatively on the group activities for the ladies. There have been new member coffee meet ups, social lunches and a learn to crochet group established. The month of March will see the group host a free seminar provided by Costa Blanca Lawyers. The Lowedownwith Lynne INTERVIEW with Sandra Wilby

Hi, my name is Lynne and I have been lucky to call Gran Alacant home for the last 5 years. People fascinate me and I love to hear about their adventures and life stories. Over the next few months, I will be sharing some interview with GA’s very own Superstars! WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO GA? “My husband John and I contacted Atlas International. They flew us over from London to look at properties in Torrevieja, Guardamar, Santa Pola and Arenales. When they brought us to Gran Alacant, we liked it so much we decided to buy off plan. Initially we used the house as a holiday home until we decided to relocate here permanently 3 years ago.” WORKING LIFE IN UK Much of Sandra’s early working career was in the field of Social Work. She worked in a variety of different areas including residential care for adolescent boys, hospital social work in cancer and maternity wards, child-care and addiction and substance abuse. Just as Sandra completed her Postgraduate in Social Work at Southampton University, her first husband returned from the Falklands War. Sandra believes he suffered from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and that this was a contributing factor in the breakdown of their marriage. Having worked in Child Protection myself, I know how overworked and stressed some Social Workers are. In fact, many quit the profession because of high caseloads, stress and a negative working environment. When I asked Sandra how she coped she said, “One day I thought, there must be more to life than this and I applied to work overseas with Thomson Tour Operations.” WORKING LIFE OVERSEAS Sandra quickly settled into her new role overseas and was promoted to Senior Resort Supervisor. She modestly says she

believes she was promoted because of her age (in her 30’s) but I believe it was largely because she has a wonderful ability to connect and communicate well with anyone she meets. Sandra worked in many beautiful locations around the world including Saint Lucia, Malta, Tunisia, Italy, Egypt, Israel and latterly Dubai where she was responsible for setting up the Thomson Tour Operations Programme. Sandra joined Emirates Airline in 1996. In March 1997, a Gulf Air plane aborted take-off at Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. Strong winds caused the aircraft to veer off course. The aircraft’s nose and wing suffered serious damage. Flight crew were hospitalised and staff suffered spinal injuries because the emergency slide was not properly secured during the emergency exit. Gulf Air Management asked Emirates Management for assistance to help deal with the aftermath of the incident. With Sandra’s experience of PTSD and with her wide Social Work background she volunteered to be part of the emergency call centre and offered her critical incident stress management training to respond to the affected crew onboard. Following this incident, a position of Manager for the Emergency Call Centre arose and Sandra got the job.

THE LOWEDOWN WITH LYNNE

SANDRA WHAT DID YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB? “I truly enjoyed implementing my psychological training into Emirates’ Emergency Response procedures. Eventually I developed this into a Family Assistance Programme to respond to surviving passengers, the hospitalised and family members of anyone affected by an aircraft accident. I am also proud of setting up a Peer Support programme for flight and cabin crew after traumatic incidents onboard. Thankfully, Emirates has not experienced an accident to date and I proposed to use the training and cultural backgrounds and languages of our multicultural volunteer base (at one point I had over 1300 volunteers that received annual psychological first aid training provided by myself). I feel very privileged to have been in that role and thoroughly enjoyed travelling world-wide to train Outstation staff too.” WHAT DID YOU LIKE ABOUT LIVING IN DUBAI? “I liked the fact there were so many different nationalities living in one place. It felt like such a gracious place, there were separate queues for women and we were treated very respectfully. I always felt safe and there was a great respect for both gender and culture.” HOW DID YOU MEET YOUR HUSBAND JOHN? “I met John at a dinner party in Dubai and we hit it off straight away. I loved his easy-going nature and openness and the fact that both of us had previously been married with no children. We loved travel and this ignited us to enjoy some overseas travel before committing to marriage … and thankfully, second time lucky for both of us.”

WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME? “John loves golf so I consider myself a bit of a golf widow. I keep fit by going to spin classes three times a week at Armory Gym and Aqua BootCamp in summer. I enjoy art and making cards is one of my hobbies.” Sandra creates the most beautiful handmade cards for every occasion. I have been lucky enough to buy a few and each one is like a little piece of art. “I love languages. I studied French and German at University and picked up a lot of Italian when I had the pleasure of working there with Thomson and of course, I enjoy learning Spanish too.” Sandra is also a member of GALS (Gran Alacant Ladies) and Gal Pals. Two popular ladies groups who like to organise social events. WHAT ARE YOU GRATEFUL FOR? “My Maltipoo Alfie. After many years of not being able to have a dog because of the heat in Dubai, I was so happy to have him. That is the best thing about living in GA … the lovely walks with my dog Alfie. I am also grateful for the Spanish outdoor lifestyle and hope to visit more areas of Spain this year. GA is a wonderful sense of community and offers many opportunities to explore the surrounding areas.”

Thank you Sandra for sharing your story with us. What a rich and fulfilling life you have enjoyed!

DRIVING OVER ALMONDS The citizens of Tokyo famously cherish their annual visits to the cherry blossom and here in Alicante we can enjoy a similar experience with the famous local almond tree blossom. Almonds are one of the signature crops of our region and the trees come into flower at this time of year. Interestingly the trees produce their blossom early despite the risk of frost since they require a lot of water to develop their fruit; this means that in order to take advantage of the rains in March and April they flower early giving a spring like floral treat despite the early time of year. The further inland one travels the

later the blossom. In the Alicante region, there are many areas where this wonderful nature display can be enjoyed; the four most popular areas are Valle de Guadalest, Valle de Relleu, Jijona and Valle de Pop. To see an early display we headed to the local Valle de Pop, specifically the area between Xaló and Alcalalí. This location is famous for its magnificent early almond blossom

which combines with cherry tree blossom to create an unrivalled floral display. Almonds are used in a wide variety of products from food stuffs like the famous local turrón to cosmetics. The hypoallergenic quality of almond oil makes it an important ingredient in face and body creams. Have a look at the list of ingredients on the back of your tube of moisturiser or can of shaving gel and you will likely find almond oil listed. Spain produces around 200,000 tons annually with our region being one of the main centres of production. The use of almonds in cooking has an even longer heritage and stretches back to the original introduction of almond trees to Europe from the Middle East, which is thought to have been in the third century CE. In turn Spanish Francisan priests are said to have taken the first almond trees to California in the 17th century when the American west coast was under Spanish rule. Almond production is however currently

threatened by an outbreak of Xilella Fastidosia, this bacterium is spread by insects and will kill or seriously harm the trees and it is currently impacting countries like Spain, Italy and our neighbours in Northern Africa. In recent years the infection has had a major impact on the number and health of our region's almond trees. There is no cure for the infection once it is established and the only current treatment is prevention by removal of infected trees to control the spread. It is to be hoped that the disease can be controlled before it inflicts further damage on the almond tree population. This disease has sadly impacted negatively the splendour of almond tree blossom in the valleys of Alicante, however, it’s still worth the visit. Our trip to view the almond blossom had the additional attraction of visiting the Saturday markets in the town of Xaló. This little town nestles in a valley and hosts both a charming organic produce market (Mercat de la Terra) and a little local antique and flea market. We spent a

fascinating hour examining the items on sale; of particular interest were the old guide books showing Spain as it was in the

1960s and 1970s! These markets pull in many people from the surrounding valleys and countryside including both Spaniards and foreign residents, it was lovely to see so much life in the cafes and restaurants and we recommend it as a weekend day out. Things may finally be looking up! Follow us on Instagram: juanruano.oficial & archiemaddan

EASY HORSE CARE CHARITY SHOP CLOSURE On 10 February 2022, the Easy Horse Care charity shop closed its doors for the last time following the banks decision not to renew the lease on the property. The shop was located next to Dialprix and opened on 15 December 2015. The proceeds from the shop helped raise funds to rescue and rehabilitate abused, neglected and abandoned horses and to help campaign for the better treatment of animals across Spain. British expats Sue and Rod Weeding founded the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre in 2008. They now care for over 120 horses, ponies and donkeys saved from abuse and neglect. Former volunteer Jan Wright said, “How sad it is that one of the biggest and best charity shops in Gran Alacant has now closed. I have been a volunteer from the beginning when the shop originally opened on the corner where Bankinter used to be. It was there for at least 2 years before opening next to Dialprix.” A local resident said, “The shop grew in popularity thanks to furniture sales. They had a great service where a van would come and collect and drop of furniture for a small fee”. Volunteer Jan Wright continued, “Thank you to everyone who gave donations to the shop. We have received some beautiful things over the years, and customers have enjoyed buying all the bargains. A big thank you to all the volunteers, past and present, and to Molly the Manageress who worked so hard to raise money for abused and abandoned horses.” For more information about Ease Horse Care check out www.easyhorsecare.net THIS MAGAZINE IS NOW IN ITS 17TH YEAR. use of modern farming methods in areas next to our nature reserves. Anyone who has been out in the countryside recently will have seen the acres of plastic sheeting being laid down on open fields to encourage the quicker growth of crops. As a short-term measure it gives the farmers a better return, but from an ecological point of view it is a disaster.

Myself and a couple of my local birding chums often visit the steppes of Yecla, about an hour’s drive inland from Alicante where they have been using plastic sheeting over the crops for several years, and in some areas it is an utter disgrace. Not only does the plastic disintegrate over time due to the effects of sun and wind, leaving a landscape strewn with plastic detritus which is extremely unsightly, but the plastic also wears down into microparticles which will get into the soil, and eventually into the food we eat. This affects a multitude of speWe are extremely fortunate in our area to cies in the area, and as observers of nature have several nature reserves such as the we can see the results on the numbers of Clot, the El Hondo wetlands, and the salinas species we see. at Santa Pola and La Mata. BEAUTIFUL, BUT ILL

Norwegian Parliament has approved, at last, a law for banning the breeding of pure (not applicable to crossed ones) British Bulldog and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. What is the reason? Very simple: scientific researches about genetics have proved Bulldog may suffer up to 25 genetic diseases and 40 in case of King Charles. This means that, just for the simple fact of being born, most of these animals will spend most of their lives suffering different diseases.

Liliana Aldeguer Cerdán 793 English translation by Sergio Reina Esteban col 747

Grooming Service Available Talking about anatomical problems, recent researches about animals which died of heat stroke, prove that most of them are brachycephalic (short nose) dogs, cats and rabbits, and also Guinea pigs and ferrets.

Crossing these breeds with other dogs is allowed, since it reduces inbreeding: most pure breed Bulldogs and King Charles Spaniels are relatives, and this high degree of inbreeding makes lots of health problems appear.

In case of dogs, the cause that started the heat stroke was an excess of exercise. Our friends will run by our side and play with other dogs, not realizing their body temperature is rising up till it’s too late. In case of brachycephalic dogs, this process is much quicker since their respiratory “cooling” is very inefficient. In case of cats, rabbits, Guinea pigs and ferrets, the cause was a too hot environment. No one of these species is able to regulate body temperature very well, and their strategy is normally to escape from direct sunlight and look for a cooler place. If this is impossible, body temperature increases dramatically and they die. So, in both cases, is the owner who has to avoid these dangerous situations, stopping the exercise and providing a cool place.

Another animal (as far as we know is not included in Norwegian regulation) which suffers a very poor quality of life due to its anatomical characteristics is Flemish giant rabbit. Despite they are beautiful and impressive (they can weigh 12 kg or more), the breeding should be stopped and nobody should purchase or adopt them, since the skeleton of this animal is extremely fragile and they are prone to spontaneous bone fractures, which are practically impossible to treat, because the bones get literally disintegrated between the Vet surgeon’s hands. Definitively it’s not fair to bring animals like these to the world.

All these scientific researches are been developed in UK, and the final recommendation is not to expose the animals to heat or exercise from June to August. Of course, in case of Spain, specially in this area, these recommendation is valid for all year round except winter. In the Mediterranean area is much easier to die by high temperatures than by low ones. During high temperature season, which will start soon (even sooner than normal because of climate change), we shouldn’t leave an animal outdoors if it has no place to hide from direct sunlight. A few minutes are enough to kill it. It’s our responsibility.

We are talking about heart and respiratory problems, predisposition to allergic problems, and skin and joints problems. Norwegian Animal Welfare Act obliges to avoid as much as possible animal suffering, and some regulations from other countries are similar, which means that sooner or later we will see something similar here.

GA RUNNING GROUP

THE (CONTINUING) ADVENTURES OF THE GRAN ALACANT RUNNERS During 2021 Graeme Dockwray introduced himself to the running group. He lives in Gateshead where he is a member of Low Fell Running Club, regularly running the Saturday Morning Park Run in Saltwell Park, Gateshead. In March he will be in GA and plans to run the Benidorm 21k on 5th March. Graeme started running with a small group in the late 70’s when he was about 15, running every Saturday from South Shields to Sunderland (about 12 miles).

won a silver medal in the 10,000 mtrs, the best performance of a British athlete at the time. Speculation still reigns over whether he should have been awarded gold. Also among Mike’s achievements are the two wins he had in the Golden 10,000 mtrs which were the fore runner to the World Championships.

Like a lot of runners at that time he entered the first and second Great North Run (1981 & 1982) finishing in an incredible time of 70 minutes. The winner of the races in 1981 and 1982 was Elswick Harriers and future Olympian, Mike McLeod, who finished in 63 minutes. We don’t know Graeme’s finishing position but there were very few in-front of him, and so at the finish he was asked to meet Mike where he was asked to act as a running partner for Mike, pacing him in 5km and 10km road races. In 1984 Graeme joined the army for 4 years where he was selected to run for the army, winning many races over 5k and 21k distances, but in between time, when he was on leave, he would continue to act as a pace maker for Mike McLeod usually taking over the pace making with 5km to the finish. Mike McLeod had a distinguished running career representing England at the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984 where he

Graeme turned his attention to Kendo and is now a 5th Dan, but he took up running again to help his step daughter prepare for the Great North Run and it was about this time he joined Low Fell Running Club and now he runs every other day with a race every month. He is still producing good times, 19 mins for 5km, 40 mins for 10km and 90 mins for 21km, and is still winning races in his age category. I expect good things from him in Benidorm in March. John and I will be running the 10km in Benidorm on the same day but we won’t be anywhere near Graeme’s time. UPCOMING LOCAL EVENTS: Benidorm 10km & 21km 5th March Perleta 10km plus 6.3km walking event 6th March Elche 21km - 12th March

BICI GRAN ALACANT

We are a small group who spend most of the time here in Gran Alacant. If you are interested in joining one of our rides look us up on Facebook Gran Alacant Road Cyclist (Bici Gran Alacant) where ride details are posted.

GRAN ALACANT WALKING FOOTBALL Members continue to trickle back from the UK with the relaxation of Covid travelling regulations.

Our Indoor Sessions continue and we meet afterwards at the rear patio of La Piedra to socialize and enjoy the warmer sunshine. We will be supplying posters to bars/ restaurants to advertise our sessions and encourage new members to come along to the Polideportivo Gran Alacant on Av. D’Escandinavia,78 every Wednesday at 11am adjacent to the outdoor market.

On the social front, some members are enjoying the improved form of Elche CF and are looking forward to the remainder of the La Liga season. In March we can look forward to home matches against Barcelona and Valencia. We still wait for some news on the promised outdoor astroturf facility. However the Santa Pola outdoor pitch used by the Santa Pola Walking Football has still to be resurfaced and that must take place before our pitch progresses. Stay safe everyone… John Fraser +44 7866315087 I +34 630 582322
