Hello everyone. Front cover for this month, one of the trees in blossom at the GA Centre. The winners for the Wordsearch were Liz Melville and the second Ettiene Van Craenenbroek. The answer was snowdrops You can read about many events, in this issue, that took place during April. Firstly the 2 walks that raised money for good causes. The first was held on the Carabasi Beach for Cancer Equipment for Elche Hospital and then on the 10th The Mabs Walk for Life, helping people on Gran Alacant who are suffering with Cancer. On the 16th the Gran Alacant restaurant awards were held in Los Belgas, then on the 21st-24th the Big Street Party was held down by the Carabasi Bars. Also on the 24th, Terry of Terryoke fame did a sponsored scuba dive for MABs down on the beach by the Little Church on the coast road. There will be pictures of that event in the June edition of our magazine. You are probably aware that the local elections take place this month. With our magazine being distributed so early in the month of May, we were not allowed to print any advertising literature for the parties involved. Have a good month. Sandra & Barry

MABS Walk for Life 10th April 2011. It was a perfect Spring sunny morning to have a Walk with all the ladies dressed in Pink quite a few I did not recognise at first. Barry from Gran Alacant Advertiser kindly acted as a Judge for us and in the end 2 ladies won as they were so good. Our sincere thanks to Loreto our local Councillor, we had the Santa Pola Police on the route with the walkers, the Council also supplied the tables, chairs, speakers for the music and the microphone which gave the event more of an atmosphere. We had over 30 walkers many did the circuit twice and looked a bit red as the sun got hotter. The money raised to date is 653.84 but we have the MonteMar Bowls and Social Club who have agreed to sponsor us for 100 euros and possibly more to come yet and another large amount from a bar, so it will be nearer 900 euros when all the money is received which is paid into a Gran Alacant Bank to be used in the local area. Thank you to everyone who took part and helped to raise so much money, we are thrilled. A special thank you to Bluemoon Solutions-Spanish Ink who kindly sponsored us by designing and printing all our Posters, flyers, forms and paid for a beautiful big Banner, along with the balloons a lot of people stopped to see what was going on. If you would like more information about MABS regarding the loan of equipment, being a volunteer driver, translator or you would like us to give a Talk to your Group or Club please contact me Jan Wright 966 697 754 or Angela 965 060 182. It should be mentioned that volunteers are not paid but there are out of pocket expenses. Jan Wright

This is a message that appeared on one of the local forums from Mark. He gave us permission to print it here! Beware!!! A warning for all

Hello Folks,

I thought I would share my experience with you all. last week I foolishly left my house without my driving licence. I was stopped by La Guardia for a spot check. I produced all paperwork for my vehicle, insurance etc.. and went on to explain that I did not have my licence with me. As I could not retrieve my licence (I had inadvertently left it in Ireland), I was subsequently treated to 3 hours of interrogation, held in a guardia van and almost arrested. Just because I did not have my driving licence. I had my passport, nie number and all other documents with me. I was finally released, but advised that I was now banned from driving, subject to a court appearance today. ( Oh they gave me â‚Ź800 fine to boot ). This morning I went to court in Elche and was treated to a 2 hour wait for the judcio. I was eventually informed that I could either accept a â‚Ź1440 fine (on top of the other â‚Ź800) or 22 days community service, or go to court to argue and maybe get a stiffer punishment. However, I then produced my licence and informed them that I had in-fact accidentally left it in Ireland while on my last visit. They took a statement to that effect and registered it to the prosecutor for his evidence. I am now informed that maybe he will dismiss the case against me, or maybe not. I have to wait now for more information............................in the meantime I am free to drive again. ALL BECAUSE I FORGOT TO CARRY MY LICENCE WITH ME.

We live in Calle Monte De Santa Pola just in front of the life resort, few months ago the council mouved some refuses bins that were in front of the offices of the life resort and placed further down half way down the hill, I suppose because the managers from the abovementioned life resort complained about them being in front of the offices,as you know the road is one way only and now we get all the people from Montefaro urb. using the only bin that is placed in front of our house resulting now to overspill of refuse bags and as the bin is always very full (as it is used by all the Don Pueblo inhabitants and the restaurant in the life resort as well)so can you please explain the problem and try to find a solution for it example placing an other one next to the existing one. Best regards Giuseppe Messina

GRAN ALACANT SERVICES,

ALWAYS ASK - NEVER ASSUME!! His request approved, the CNN News photographer quickly used a cell phone to call the local airport to charter a flight. He was told a twin-engine plane would be waiting for him at the airport. Arriving at the airfield, he spotted a plane warming up outside a hanger. He jumped in with his bag, slammed the door shut, and shouted, 'Let's go'. The pilot taxied out, swung the plane into the wind and took off. Once in the air, the photographer instructed the pilot, 'Fly over the valley and make low passes so I can take pictures of the fires on the hillsides.' 'Why?' asked the pilot. 'Because I'm a photographer for CNN' , he responded, 'and I need to get some close up shots.' The pilot was strangely silent for a moment, finally he stammered, 'So, what you're telling me, is . . . You're NOT my flight instructor?'

Over a two month period this Galgo (English Greyhound) was seen wandering in the fields. We tried to rescue her on many occasions but she would run off. On one occasion five K9 volunteers and four police agents in two police cars succeeded in herding her into a small orchard, we thought that we had her cornered and would be able to get to her. However she escaped under the loose fencing. Then, after another six weeks of failed rescue attempts, she was seen again and we raced to the area. We found her laid on the ground, totally exhausted and starving. She offered no resistance, she did not have the strength to get up to run off. We were elated when she quickly reacted to some TLC, she has obviously been used to being with people. We believe that after being abandoned her priority was to try to get back to her home, something that could never happen, she was probably brought far from her home and abandoned at an unknown location. We have named her Gentle Jenny and although she was emaciated when she was found, blood tests at the vet clinic revealed that, mercifully, she had not contracted any serious disease. She is a indeed a very gentle dog, two years old, and she is also good with other dogs. The best thing about Jenny's rescue is that she is now safe and enjoying being with people again. Duke was found at an abandoned church along with another dog. They both had a collar and lead and were tied onto a post. They were lucky because a K9 volunteer saw them rescued them. Duke is a beautiful German Shepherd looking for a new home. He is good with other dogs.

We believe this dog is a Leonburger cross. He was found in the fields. He has leishmania but is now on medication to control it. He is very loving and does not know that he is a giant breed. He is receiving all the necessary medication, approx 1 year old and his name is Tiny. An English family deserted their rented house and trashed it, at the same time they callously dumped their house cat outside without making any arrangements for her. It was weeks later that this cat’s plight was brought to our attention. When we went to rescue her we called out and she came running, talking to us all the way until she arrived at our feet and immediately she was happy to be picked up. She was starving and de-hydrated, she also had a badly injured paw which was the result of a fight with a much stronger street cat. She is approx 2 years and recovering in our cattery. She has beautiful blue eyes, we have named her Sally Sorepaw.

would like to welcome Louise to their salon to provide a full range of beauty services.

An email to the magazine that we are delighted to share with our readers. It helps to alleviate any fears any of us may have, if we are suddenly taken seriously ill, out here in Spain. We wish Fran good health for the future. On the Tuesday before Christmas at about 9.30am my wife started to experience severe headaches and started vomiting. She used to be a nurse and immediately suspected that it could be a stroke. I dialled 112 and called for an ambulance. The ambulance arrived some 15 minutes later, the paramedics asked a few questions and then whisked her off to Elche hospital. I drove over to the hospital where I was quickly led into the A&E unit to find her being attended to by 4 doctors and nurses. One of the doctors told me they had given her a scan and found that she had 2 aneurysms in her brain, one of which had ruptured causing a massive bleed in her brain. They told me she was going to be transferred to the neurosurgical specialty unit at the Hospital General in Alicante. She was then taken by ambulance, together with medical staff, to the Alicante hospital. I was given directions and then made my way there in my car. On arrival I went to reception where the staff were expecting me and directed me to the A&E unit where I was led to her bed. After a short wait we were taken up to the neurosurgical ward on the 6th floor. I enquired about visiting times and told I was welcome to see her at any time of the day or night.

The next morning they operated on her. The consultant explained the procedure fully to me, in English, I signed the consent forms, and then he suggested I went for a coffee and he would come and find me in the waiting room in about an hour. Just over an hour later he came and told me the operation had been successful and that my wife had been taken to the recovery room. He said she would remain in hospital for a few weeks and that she would need to have another operation to prevent the other aneurysm from rupturing but that they would have to wait until the trauma from the ruptured aneurysm had been treated. My wife was discharged from hospital 3 weeks later in mid-January. She went for another scan and a follow-up consultation in February and was then booked in for the second operation in March. This went very smoothly as the operation was preventative. She had the op on a Monday and was discharged on the Wednesday. She has a further outpatient appointment in June and will have another scan in September.

Overall, we found the whole experience very professional, compassionate and reassuring at a time when we were obviously very worried. Most of the doctors speak English and the medical care was excellent. Most of the nursing staff speak only Spanish but our basic Spanish, and a bit of sign language, seemed to be enough to communicate effectively. Nursing care is different from the UK as relatives are expected to help with feeding, washing etc. but the standard of cleanliness is very high and there were never any fears of MRSA infections. When my wife went in for her second op an interpreter visited her daily to see if she needed any assistance and we also noticed that the receptionists now have English speaking staff.

In conclusion, we would just like to say that, should you require to use the Spanish health service, you need not worry. I am sure that if we had been in the UK I would now be a widower. We cannot fault the excellent, life-saving service we received.

Kind regards, Paul (and Fran)

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge

So there you are, lounging by the pool, the warm summer sun gently toasting your tootsies and other bits, and you can hear this funny high-pitched noise high in the sky. QUILP, QUILP, QUILP.

You look up, but you can’t see anything – well maybe a couple of dots very high in the sky, so you shrug your shoulders and turn over to do the other side.

Which is a pity, because what you are hearing and maybe just about seeing is one of the superstars of Spanish bird life – the European Bee-eater. This is a truly spectacular bird, not just in its smart Harlequin costume, but in the way it hawks for bees and wasps, flying aerobatically (and sometimes upside-down) as it chases them. There are usually three or four families in the Clot each year from late April through to September, they love the heat, and their far-carrying calls are often the first indication that they are here. These family groups are very close-knit, and it is not unusual for non-breeding birds to help the breeding pair raise this year’s chicks; the “helpers” are often related to the breeding birds, so one nesting site (usually a hole bored about one metre into a sunny bank) can have four or five adult birds tending to it.

difficult as they are wary birds), you might end up accusing it of playing with its food – having caught a bee, it will toss it in the air, bang it on the perch and generally mess about with it for longer than seems necessary, but all this rigmarole is taking place with the aim of removing the sting. After all, you wouldn’t want a jab in the corner of your gullet as your food was going down, would you?

These birds have bred in the UK, but very rarely, and when they do they attract the sort of attention amongst British birders which is almost the equivalent of a screaming bunch of teenage girls when confronted with the latest heartthrob from the telly.

The Spanish name is Abejaruco but sadly not all Spanish people appreciate these beautiful birds, particularly bee-keepers who view them as a menace to their hives. A family of Bee-eaters can decimate a hive, each bird gobbling up a hundred or more bees in one sitting. But I hope you will agree with me that a few cents more on a jar of honey is preferable to a lot more stinging insects disturbing the tranquillity of your siesta in the sun. See you next month.

Now if you could watch a Bee-eater close-up (fairly

AMAZING, BUT TRUE (II): THE “LOST” MICROCHIP part one - part two next month

This month we are going to write about a true case, even more amazing for us than the ones we described last month: the case of the “lost” microchip. 2 years ago, a British couple came to our practice for the first time with their Labrador. Logically, the dog came properly identified with his microchip, passport, rabies jabs, and, of course, his rabies antibodies official blood test (here we would like to remind our clients rabies blood test is required just for taking a dog to the UK, not for coming into Spain in any way, and the whole process takes 7 months for the first time). So, the dog had been properly identified and vaccinated by his Vet at the UK, then he crossed the border, and came into Spain. The very first thing we did was, of course, re-registering his British microchip at the local microchip database (microchip number remains the same. It only implies filling in a form), with the new Spanish details (address and phone number) of his owners. Of course, we scanned the dog previously for making sure his microchip could be read OK, and everything worked perfectly. For the following 2 years we kept checking the Labrador regularly: we updated his injections, dewormed him, controlled his weight, and 1 year ago, because they had to go back to the UK for a while, we stamped the passport with his tick and tapeworm treatment as required by DEFRA. They got

into their country properly (which implies having the microchip scanned at the border again!), spent a short time there and came back to Spain. 1 month ago, they came to the practice because they wanted to travel again to the UK; they had booked for the ferry in Santander the following day. This dog is an excellent patient, nice and calm, so we had no problem exploring him and scanning his microchip again (we found it, like always, between shoulder blades immediately). We made sure once again his vaccinations were up to date, we did the mandatory ticks and worms treatment on him, and we stamped his passport. That was Tuesday evening. The following Thursday at midday, we had an anguishing phone call from Santander: they were completely unable to read the microchip at the ferry check point! They were sent to a practice near Santander harbor in order to try to find the microchip. We immediately phoned our colleague in Santander and she said none of her two microchip scanners was able to read the microchip, so she had started the standardized procedure for those cases: trying to find physically the microchip by X-ray. But, surprisingly, after X-raying head, neck and chest, she concluded the microchip just was NOT there! We simply couldnʼt believe it, because, less than 48 hours ago, the microchip had been successfully detected by our scanner (letʼs remember once again: we are talking about an English microchip, successfully scanned several times by our British colleague and by ourselves, and by the people at the border at least once, when the dog returned to the UK for the first time). Incredible. Absolutely nonsense. Just try to imagine how we felt that night when we went to bed. The following day, first thing in the morning, the couple and the dog were back to our practice (remember Santander is about 900 km far from Santa Pola!). They asked us very kindly to re-scan the microchip`. We turned the scanner on and… beep! The microchip was there!!!! At the first go! Then, we X-rayed the dogʼs chest for free in a lateral projection (with the dog lying on his side) and, as everyone can imagine, even an illiterate could be able to point at the microchip in the picture: 3-4 cm over the shoulder blades. Then, the owner started crying. CONTINUED NEXT MONTH
