Encebras Valley A Hidden Treasure
HOUSE FOR SALE
Between you and I, I have to confess to letting out a little sigh of contentment every time I visit this corner of the world . It happens instantly. Just as I leave the road towards Pinoso and turn into the Encebras valley. As the view across the rolling vineyards and fields is cast open, like a stage curtain being pulled back to reveal some dreamy countryside set. There is something magical about the valley, something that pleases the soul. It may be the warm golden light, sweeping across the carefully tended fields of vines. Or perhaps it is the gently meandering country road, which pulls you in, closer to its heart. Or it may be the rustic stone houses where the farm workers live lives of proud tradition. Or, it may be the rolling pine clad hills sweeping the valley at the foot of the Monte Coto National Park.
for a viewing or more information ring: 966 699 167
Maybe it is all these things. As you drive through the valley you find Encebras village. With its simple houses, like proud mothers, standing around the picturesque and charming little village square. With its palm trees, swaying grasses and the dappled shadows of the trees. Here, time seems of little real importance. It is a loved valley, by those who live here or by those fortunate enough to have trodden on its rich soil and breathed its pure air. This is a warm hearted, old fashioned, truly Spanish area. Where toothless, well-groomed and well-scented, old men stop to chat, to offer advice and to laugh with you (or perhaps, at you. Us foreigners don’t always seem too bright when it comes to the Campo ways of life). Yet, this little haven, this land of orchards and vineyards is only 35 minutes from Alicante airport and beaches. It is only 5 minutes from the lovely, friendly and lively town of Pinoso (or El Pinos, the Pine Trees). Pinoso is reportedly Spain’s fourth richest town and with that glory, as you would expect, there are excellent facilities for the locals. A modern theatre, medical centre, large sports complex with a huge range of facilities for all. There are excellent schools, friendly and famous restaurants and bars and lots of lovely little shops. Why not come up and see these areas for yourself. Visit the bodegas and taste the famous wines. Have a BBQ or picnic whilst taking in the views from the National Park. Try the cycle routes, or the alpine walks, or simply lie back and enjoy the peace and beauty of a timeless scene. Visit the Encebras valley, and let it dance with your heart. Perhaps it will touch your heart the way it touches mine.

Hello everyone Welcome to our 100th monthly edition, a great milestone. Because of the extra pages this month, we have had to leave out the local bus time-tables. You can see them on the internet at:www.autocaresbaile.es Hope you enjoy seeing our 1st and 2nd edition of eight years ago. Quite a difference between them. We seemed to expand very quickly and would like to thank all the advertisers past and present, and contributors who have made our magazine the success that it is today. Gran Alacant certainly seems to have started to come alive with more people about now. Also good to see the house building work going on again, it seems to have been along time since cranes were on the skyline. Have a good month Sandra & Barry Our little dog from the front cover has hidden herself away in the magazine, can you find her? Last month she was at the riding school.

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news, including that from our Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005. It is our perogative at the magazine, NOT to update this 2005 picture, as we all looked a great deal younger!!! The main news for us this month is that we have reached the 100th edition of our magazine.
Around the main magazine we have wrapped a copy of the very first edition we printed, ie: edition number 1, which shows the progress from number 1 to number 100. We have also printed on pages 6 and 7 a mock of edition 2, to show how we grew from the first month to the second edition.
We are the two who started it and are still here after over eight years of monthly editions.
One of our biggest achievements is that every editon has been on time. This is not just thanks to us, but also to our brilliant printer, Bailen, at Santa Pola, on the Industrial estate. They print everything there from business cards through to magazines, a smashing family business who have been so good to us.
My print career began in 1963 as an apprentice lithographic printer. It was in these early days that Sandra, who worked in another part of the same company, walked past my printing machine, and the rest is history. The pair of us have now been married for over 44 years.
All of my print life took place in Norfolk and in the latter years there was a tremendous change in the industry when it all went digital. Fortunately I was involved in all of this new training, which enabled us to totally produce a magazine out here in Spain, without the need to employ anybody else. In fact, the local printer uses all of the same processes that we used in the uk. How fortunate. When we first moved out here to Gran Alacant, the urbanistaion was always rife with rumours. We decided to start a magazine so we could dispel or substantiate these rumours, with the help of our Santa Pola Town Hall.
Our first edition in January 2005 was just an advertiser, advertising your unwanted household items. Eight pages of content, all in black print on blue paper. It was such a success that edition number 2, went into full colour and consisted of 16 pages.
One instance always sticks in my mind. One of the buildings in Sierra Mar was being revamped. As I walked past, a voice bellowed out from one of the local builders. “Why have you not asked me to advertise in your new magazine. This summed up the way the magazine quickly grew and grew. Loreto Cascales our Gran Alacant Councillor from the Town Hall meets with us every month and is a tremendous help. Information from her plus answers to our questions make up our regular news sections. In fact all at the Town Hall,
4
including the Mayor give us so much support.
As the number of pages grew, for a time at 80, we lengthened the size of the page so as to give room for more content.
It was not until I reached retirement age last year that we asked Camila to join us to share a bit of the work load. She is now starting her restaurant business with collegues where we wish them well for the future, but she will still be able to continue to help us in a limited capacity, and has enlisted the help of her boyfriend to continue with us in the future.
We also want to thank the people of Gran Alacant, our readers, our advertisers, our printer and the Town Hall, for their wonderful support. The magazine has been a steady, continual growth.
The magazine advertises its self so until recently we have just responded to phone calls and emails to obtain new clients.
January 2005 started as the black ink on blue paper 8 page edition, A5 size February 2005 expanded to 4 colour and black and white 16 pages May 2005 we grew to 24 pages June 2005 we went to 32 pages and moved to full colour September 2005 we grew to 36 pages November 2005 we grew to 40 pages December 2005 we grew to 48 pages March 2006 we grew to 56 pages June 2006 we grew to 64 pages November 2006 we grew to 68 pages March 2007 we grew to 72 pages April 2007 we grew to 76 pages August 2007 we grew to 80 pages
May 2008 we were the first magazine in the area to go online with page turning software, which we produced with the help of our website man, Robin Bonathan. June 2008 we grew again by enlarging the size of the magazine to 148mm x 240mm depth, and that is how it has mostly been up until now. October 2010 we became the first magazine to go multi lingual, producing all of our news in Spanish and for a time, in Dutch, as well as English.
The future? More of the same. We are both now at retirement age but will continue on and on, possibly involving more help along the way, (anyone interested?) which may also allow us to expand the business. Heres to the next xxxx years. We may even one day, have news of the golf course!!!!!!!!! Thank you, Sandra and Barry

A BLAST FROM THE PAST!!!!! Well, you have seen edition 1, here, we have re produced the 16 pages, all in colour, that made our second edition.

Hi Sandra & Barry I am sure you are a firm believer in "The Power Of Advertising" .Because you have regular meetings with the GA councillor Loretta would you be able to pass on some of your expertise. The new Dump It Site which i believe Loretta fought hard to get is the best kept secret on GA. Whenever i speak to people who are leaving rubbish on the floor by the bins this site is a mystery to them. On numerous occasions i have shown them the article in your January edition to prove the place exists. Leaflet drops are illegal, it would take too much time to speak to everyone, so what is the best way to communicate with the masses?. Maybe a sign with opening and closing times at the site would be a start. It would also be help full to know what rubbish can be placed there i.e Household or garden or both? All we at the magazine can do is keep mentioning it. We spoke with Loreto about signs and initially they will monitor how it is going and then make amendments as and when. There are Council workers in the area so the Council are using these persons to watch for residents looking to use the site between 10am and 1pm on Mondays to Fridays. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Hi Barry/Sandra, in the jan issue you responded to a request from an o.a.p to provide some seats up the 2 steepest hills in G.A. You said Loreto would look into this but thought the pavements were to narrow. I am just back from G.A & i cannot agree that there is no room for a couple of seats on each slope. On the maxcoop hill (pic attached) on the wider of the 2 pavements there is room for 2 seats, on cardicac hill there is ample room for 2 seats, ok so not on the pavement but set back a yard on the hard ground. Can you nudge her memory, i am sure they wil benefit the people walking up the 2 hills either from carabassi bars or the local beach. regards ian It is ironic that we again have this subject brought up to us in an email. We have had words with the council to say that we at the magazine would like to donate a seat in recognition of our 100th monthly edition of our magazine. The hill up from the roundabout with a fountain, has no resting place on the walk up the hill. The Council are pricing this for us, so hope to have a seat there, very soon. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Hello Just E / Mailing you to inform you that there are people on the market area with roller skates and kites, kids and grown ups. They have opened the fence to get in ,is this what we are going to see now have these people no respect . We have a sports centre for games. I can see this area becoming a play ground for people and see how long it takes for it being used for a doggy toilet. I believe the whole are should be fenced off else we are going to have problems. i tried phoning Loretta. regards graham A meeting took place on April 15th to organise the siting of the security gates and talks took place with the police to arrange the action thought necessary to this area. Initially gates will be erected on the site for stall holders access, not at the moment to enclose the parking areas. These parking bays may be needed at various times for activities on the site or for the sports centre. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Now you have to PAY to park! Just received a notice from the Ajuntamiento today informing us that they will charge for the parking space outside our house! This is eight years after it was built, unbelievable. Its not as though there are any problems parking what so ever
8
9
where we live, at any time of the year. Obviously yet another money grab issue What will they try next. The cost will be between 70 and 100 euros. Has anyone else received the letter? It is quite normal in the Santa Pola area to be able to pay to protect this space outside your house if it is on a public street. For a small yearly fee it enables house owners to be able to park on the street rather than putting their cars away on the drive. Many people ask for this. It only applies to public, not private streets. It enables you to have a VADO sign outside your house to stop others parking there. If you do not want it, just say no, you are not compelled to have it. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Altomar 2 house owners have just received notification from Gestifinc about the ‘gating’ of Altomar 2. Gating will commence on 1st May 2013 - total cost €65,677 (inc IVA) Works will take approx 60 days -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The Norwegian Club of Gran Alacant on 5th gave a donation of 2,100 euros to be divided between three local charities, Caritas, Red Cross and Aracelia, in the presence of the Councillor for Social Services, Ana Blasco, and the mayors of Great Alacant, Loreto Cascales and Francisco Martin. Norwegian residents have shown their solidarity with the needy and donated a check for 700 euros to each of the social groups, with those who have shown interest in continuing to work through the collection of clothes or food. The representatives of the three associations and the City of Santa Pola have wanted to acknowledge the invaluable assistance provided by members of the Norwegian Club. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------We brought up the subject of robberies, particuarly the many that are taking place in the local supermarkets. Stores are not obligated to provide security cameras so all we can do is close the gate after the horse is bolted. When it happens you must make a denuncia to the police. Depending on the amount of denuncias they receive depends upon the action taken. If no one tells them, they do not know how bad the situation is. As out here in Spain, stores do nothave to take the responsibility. Loreto phoned the police and told them of the escalations and the police will make more local checks. Unfortunately it is up to us all to get it officially monitiored. This is how it is done in Spain. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------There are workmen at the moment in front of the villas opposite the new Chino. There have been flooding problems again there, so the local council workmen are erecting more pipework and whilst doing this work are tidying the area with trees and walling around the refuse bins and planting trees to improve the look of the area. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Please send us your queries for next months meeting Take care, Sandra and Barry

Intenté llamar a Loreto. Gracias Graham. Gracias Sandra y Barry

Egg Custard Tarts
It is worth buying foil cases for these, it stops the pastry being too hard. A sweetened crust, filled with silky egg custard, topped off with a generous sprinkle of ground nutmeg. Yum! Left over pastry can be used for jam tarts or just wrapped and frozen for future use. My foils were 7 cm across the base and 11cm outside edge to edge on the top. Baking times will vary for different sizes but not by much. I found that I had enough custard to make 7, enough pastry for double that. Ingredients Pastry
500g flour 100g sugar 1 tsp salt 250g unsalted butter 2 large eggs made up to approx 250ml with water Egg custard
4 large eggs 180g sugar 1 cup double cream ½ cup milk or cream (depends on how rich you like your custard!) ground nutmeg (this is one occasion where I prefer ready ground, it's finer)
Method Pastry
1. Rub fat into flour and salt until well mixed, add sugar. 2.Add the liquid and bring together with a fork until a dough is made. Don't over work it. Form into a ball. 3.Roll out until fairly thin but still thick enough to handle. 4.Cut out into rounds - I used a small dish as a template, as my pastry cutter was not quite large enough. 5.Press into the foil tins and use a fork to decorate the edge. Make as many as the paste will allow, you can freeze the left overs or they will keep a couple of days in the fridge. Custard
1.Use a had whisk to blend all the ingredients except the nutmeg, together. 2.Strain into a clean jug. Baking
1.Put the foils on a baking tray. 2.Fill almost to the top of the pastry with custard. 3.Sprinkle on a good amount of nutmeg 4.Bake at 200c (not fan) for 20 -25 min until the centres just wobble. I switched the oven off at 20 min but left them in for another five. 5.Cool in foils on a wire rack and then put in fridge.

The cost for Rebosy ranges from 75 to 160 euro and in most cases it is a once in a lifetime treatment.
We do all kinds of pain treatments and prescriptions. Normal consultation from 30 euro.
The treatment is painless and lasts for one to two hours and you will be asked your opinion after the treatment. It is successful in 9 out of 10 cases and your physical problems may disappear immediately after being treated!
During the treatment you will simply lie on a couch and relax while the doctor carries out the treatment. The treatment consists of ReBoSy by AA (Restoring Body Symmetry by Advanced Acupuncture) using very fine needles and infrared light, among other things.
Using a level measure for ReBoSy (Restoring Body Symmetry) you can see the difference - before and after treatment.
A small deviation in the level of your pelvis - which you may never have noticed - could give you back or neck problems or even headaches. Because of this you may end up as a patient who has to endure many different medical treatments.
Without knowing it, many of us suffer from instability in the Pelvis which can lead to unequal leg length resulting in a small deviation (Scoliosis) in the column.
New treatment - unknown in U.K. - for lower back pain, headache, migraine, muscular tension, muscular pain(including Lumbar pain) and many more.

THE TEN MOST COMMON PATHOLOGIES IN DOGS
According to Pfizer Laboratories, the ten most commonly seen diseases in dogs are: -Otitis (ear infections). -Skin allergic problems -Skin infections. -Gastritis with vomits. -Gastroenteritis with diarrhoeas. -Urinary tract infections (cystitis). -Arthritis. -Soft tissues traumatisms. -Benign tumors. -Ocular problems. According to our experience, after 15 years working at this area, this list is quite exact, even if you consider that there are some specific diseases at our area, such as Leishmaniosis and some other parasitic diseases, which are not included in the list.
These ten health problems are certainly very common in dogs. Some other statistics say that most cases you can see at a small animal practice are skin problems (itching, infections, bald patches), and reproductive problems (neutering, mammary gland tumors, uterus infections, etc). But it’s also true that the diseases that are seen at the practice will vary depending on the breed (we have written in the past about racial predispositions) and the age (pets live longer and longer, so geriatric problems such as heart problems, arthritis, tumors, are becoming more and more common).
One health problem which, in our opinion, should appear at this list, would be mouth problems: more than 50% of dogs and cats we check every day, are suffering from plaque, gingivitis, or both, in a lower or higher degree, depending on the individual. Many owners think bad breath or plaque is normal in pets, but that’s false. Dogs are supposed to smell like dog, not like perfume, but when they have a really bad breath, it’s normally caused by a mouth infection, with or without plaque. The mouth should be clean,
66
and, again depending on the individual, teeth should be cleaned every one, two or three years (in some lucky individuals, never).
Apart from the diseases that appear at the list, some other ones, with environmental causes, are becoming more and more common, such as some tumors and other skin diseases caused by an excessive exposure to direct sunlight (dermatitis, superficial chronic keratitis, carcinoma…), alimentary allergic problems, which may appear as diarrhoeas or skin problems, hormonal diseases, etc.
The most important the owner should know about all these problems, is prevention. In case of infectious diseases, it’s relatively easy: a good vaccination plan is very effective. We would like to remind everybody that kennel cough vaccine is a powerful tool for controlling the small outbreaks we suffer at this area every summer. External and internal antiparasitic treatments are very important for controlling diseases such as heartworm and vector-borne diseases. For non-infectious diseases, vaccines are not of use, but common sense: a right diet, preservative and GMO free if possible, no “extras” such as bacon, ice creams, chips, chocolate, etc. Another good ideas could be: walking the dog always in the lead, using top quality antiparasitic treatments (not supermarket ones, or cheap fakes from the Internet), and having the pet checked by a Vet at least twice a year (annual injections plus a 6 month check), for detecting any health problem at its first stages. Liliana Aldeguer Cerdán col 793. English translation by Sergio Reina Esteban col 747.
If you take a walk around the Spanish countryside, you may come upon notices which say “Coto de caza”. For those of you with a limited grasp of Spanish this roughly translates as “You can’t come in here with your shotgun until you have paid me five hundred euros”. As anyone who has been woken up at 5 in the morning at the weekend knows, the Spanish are quite keen at shooting things like rabbits and game birds which can be turned into a paella. These signs can also be seen around the perimeter fence of the Clot, and in this case it simply means “No Hunting”. It is perhaps just as well that birds and animals can’t read, or they would be seeking sanctuary by in their thousands in the Clot and making rude faces at the hunters standing on the wrong side of the fence. Mark Etheridge Here’s one of the hunter’s regular targets, the Red-legged Partridge (also known by some as the French Partridge) or Perdiz Roja in Spanish. It is familiar to most British birdwatchers, having first been introduced to the UK for sporting purposes in 1600, and is now as widespread as the British Grey Partridge, but here in Spain, Portugal and France it is a native bird. Because it is highly valued as a shooting bird, the populations are high despite the annual slaughter and in many areas these birds are actively managed in order to satisfy the hunter’s demands between the months of October and February. There are quite a few Partridges in the Clot; you will often hear their gruff rhythmic calls or experience that heart-stopping moment when a flock of them explode from the undergrowth as you are innocently walking along one of the paths. This is not a good survival technique for a game bird, as it makes them easier to shoot. However, they manage quite well for a bird which is mostly destined to end up in a puff of feathers and lead shot. They are seed-eaters, although the young are helped to grow quickly on a diet of insects. They gather together in a group; it is very rare to see a bird out and about on its own, and these tend to be family gatherings. The hen will lay a comparatively large number of eggs – clutches of 13 or 14 eggs are not uncommon, and the chicks will stay with the parents until maturity and beyond, although the mortality rates are still high from non-human predators. So if you see a group of these birds in the Clot, wish them well and hope that they don’t take it into their heads to fly over the fence into the shooting ranges beyond.
WHAT’S THAT?
IN THE CLOT?
See you next month.
