We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news, including that from our Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005. It is our perogative at the magazine, NOT to update this 2005 picture, as we all looked a great deal younger!!! The current market on Gran Alacant on Calle Canarias, has been extended, with the opening of 34 new posts, there are now 134 stalls in total that are open to the public every Thursday. Amongst new vendors to this market are roast chicken stalls, artisan cheeses and fresh milk, organic food, Moroccan spices, besides the usual clothes, shoes and accessories. Other stallholders waiting for a pitch, will be able to join the market when the new facility opens. There are pictures in this edition of the Gran Alacant Big Party, held near the school over the Easter period. There were fairground rides and plenty of seating for eating and drinking, plus a stage, supplied by the Town Hall. Main sponsors for the event were the: Association Polanens, Hispania/Yellow Submarine and the Town Hall. The City of Santa Pola is in the process of renewing its traffic light network with the aim of improving road safety in the urban area for both vehicles and pedestrians. This is a project funded by the Department of Infrastructure through the Plan Trust, with a budget of 121,469 euros, and has already started operating at four traffic light junctions.

4

The project is to provide traffic lights to help traffic flow and pedestrian ways because of the substantial increase in the population during summer, the already complicated traffic control is further complicated by damage to regulators and obsolete items in poor condition. Traffic lights are being installed with LED technology, electromagnetic detectors, loops and pedestrian push buttons, thus some facilities whose schedule is fixed is actuated according to the actual traffic demand at all times. Also the dismantling of the existing traffic light bulbs for cleaning, avoiding glare, and replacing much of the wiring installations. There was plenty of entertainment at the GA Centre over Easter. A few pictures h e r e supplied by Stefan.

pitches when the new market area is finished. The idea is to be trialed, hopefully during May, on the car park outside the GA Council Offices on a Sunday afternoon. Anyone can ring and book a pitch for your table, where you are quite welcome to sell your second hand goods. You can contact Maria or Jesus of the “Asociation of Residentes Europeos of Gran Alacant on 606 536 066 to book your place. Demand will dictate whether further markets will take place as an on going event. At the moment it would be once a month but if proves popular it could be extended to more Sundays. The two big projects now underway on Gran Alacant are the Calle Mediterraneo road way pictured below, and the starting of the new

Talking of the BIG Party. The surface put down next to the school can now be used for parents parking their cars whilst dropping off and picking up their children from the GA School. The half built structure between the school and the GA Centre has been leased out by MASA to a Chinese Bazar company. So, hopefully this will improve the eyesore located there. The new park built by MASA should soon be officially opened. This is a welcome addition to the view as you come onto our Urbanisation. We mentioned in an earlier edition, the idea to start table top sales

market area. At the market area moving earth has started that marks the beginning of construction of the new market of Gran Alacant, a project funded by the Department of Infrastructure through the Trust Plan with a budget of 520,501 euros, which creates an enclosed area of 12,400 m2 next to the sports centre on Avenue Escandinavia with a capacity for 290

stalls. The new market, fully fenced, will be home to about 290 stalls in the six lines authorized to do so, they will each be seven metres wide to facilitate the movement of people. There will also be a parking area

open for up to 186 places, six of which are adapted for disabled guests. This action completes the execution of a building for administrative use, public toilets and a shop. They are also planting several trees that provide shade and there will be street furniture like benches and bins. Also to be installed will be the network of water supply for the posts and irrigation and lighting and low voltage for the stalls. This will give the residents of Gran Alacant a higher quality service, being able to also use this space for conducting various recreational and leisure activities outdoors, such as concerts, parties, etc. The works, which have a budget of 520,501 euros have been allocated to the joint venture APUC-Contracts Vilor and have an execution period of twelve months. A follow up to last month’s vet column............ Dear Sandra and Barry

I would like to take this oppertunity to thank Sergio and Liliana from the vets in Masa Square for all their help and support that they have given to me and Lana my 8 year old maltese through a very harrowing couple of months. I took her to them after a weekend that saw her drinking and urinateing to excess not eating and getting more and more lethargic. Through their diligence and accurate diagnosis they were able to do tests and start a course without which I do not think she would be here today. It turned out that she had been a victim of the Mercadona petfood. They have both been outstanding in there assistance to me and have been able to explain the treatment and all the results of the blood tests and urine tests even though I have very little Spanish. I would like to thank them and recommend their veterinary practice to to all your readers. Thanks again and keep up the magazine John

John

A recipe from

Sandra’s Cookbook

which you can read online at:- www.sandrascookbook.com compiled by Sandra Bonathan (not Sandra from this magazine)

White Chocolate and Raspberry Cheesecake

Delicious! Either use the traditional biscuit base, or make a fatless sponge base instead. (One large egg beaten with equal weight of sugar till like custard, then equal weight of plain flour folded in). Spread on baking paper and bake at 200c until firm. Cut out using the same tin you will make the cheesecake in. Ingredients

Base *12 crushed digestives *50g butter or marg (melted) Filling *300 g full fat cream cheese *200 g white chocolate, broken *200 ml chilled whipping cream *about 500g fresh raspberries (or defrosted frozen) *1 leaf gelatine *icing sugar

Method Mix together biscuits and butter and press into base of loose bottomed cake tin (about 20cm). You can line the tin with greaseproof paper if you want to. Put in fridge or freezer while you make the filling. Lightly whip the cream, not to peaks, just till thickened. Carefully melt chocolate with a splash of the cream. White chocolate seizes easily. Add cream cheese to chocolate, mixing well. Fold in whipped cream. Pile half mix onto base, scatter with berries. Cover with rest of mix, and chill till set. Puree most of the remaining fruit, leaving some to decorate the top, adding a little icing sugar to taste. Soak a leaf of gelatine in 2 tbsp cold water, then melt for 20 secs in m/wave. Beat into pureed fruit. Use with rest of fruit to top the cheesecake. Alternative For those using a sponge base, a little whiskey or Amoretto can be sprinkled over the base before filling.
