Hello readers
So much going on again this month on and around Gran Alacant. We have pictures of the Santa Pola Duathlon, Gran Alacant fiesta races, the storms and an update on the first secret garden we told you about in an earlier edition. Our news pages show even more progress on the urbanisation making our area even better. Many people are commenting on how nice a place this is to live, with all of the improvements being carried out. There are two appeals in the magazine this month. One is for volunteers for next years Gran Alacant fiesta races; they need people to help with handing out water, T-shirts and goody bags at the finish of the races, also generally helping out as the event has become very popular and attracting more and more competitors. Also an appeal from the Gran Alacant Football Club, who would love to welcome any new players, so if you enjoy playing football give them a call. There is an article in the magazine with their contact numbers. With Christmas on the horizon, if you would like alterations to your adverts or indeed any new material please let us know as early as possible. Have a good month Barry and Sandra
PLEASE REMEMBER After our initial deliveries to over 100 outlets, we do top up during the month at:“The Winery”, “Euronics” and the “Phoenix Restaurant”. Please let us know by the 14th of every month if you would like any changes to your advert

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news from the Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005. Three more big projects on Gran Alacant got underway a couple of weeks ago. They are shown on our GA map. The first PARK is now underway. We will keep you up to date with its progress, hopefully with pictures. There will be 2 playground areas,
exercise machines, garden, tables, benches, lighting and a viewing area. Trees will help to shield it from the adjacent housing. Soil for the park has been taken from another area of GA where the soil is not needed, therefore helping to keep costs down.

build more houses. These trees might otherwise have had to be thrown away, so they have been moved to a new home. Thirdly, the enclosing of the sports centre, so sporting activities can take
place in the winter and/or from the summer sun.
The second project along the edge of el CLOT, where the new pavement, cycle

way, and fencing will gradually evolve. Have you seen the amount of lovely old trees being planted there? The trees are from an area where (one day) MASA will
You may remember in an earlier edition that we had words about a non connected drain on Avenida Polonia, which when it rains, leaves a pool of water that cannot ever drain away,
leaving lying stagnant water. The picture
shows the work going on to reconnected it to the drain system. A more important area of flooding has been the one in front of the Life Resort. You will see in this issue, an email explaining the problem there. At time of writing this, the problem is being rectified, which makes it very pleasing for these long suffering residents. Some other areas on GA, liable to flooding, have also been sorted, to help hopefully solve all of these problems. The new train will be with us in the next three months. Until then, it is hoped that the present owners will continue the service. The Fiesta races (photos in this issue) was a tremendous success. The number of contestants doubled from last year, with 1,000 adults and children taking part. A cap had to be put on even more entrants as there were not enough volunteers to cope with all of the extra runners. Loreto has asked us to appeal to the people of Gran Alacant, for helpers with next years event, so they can make the event even bigger, if you would like to help please contact the council or the organizers of the event. Have you seen the new rubbish bins used in some areas of Santa Pola? The rubbish goes into the silver bins and down below ground to much bigger bins. These are then accessed by lifting up the silver bin ground floor area and reaching down to pick up the big bin
holding the rubbish. This kind of bin will be sited in three areas of Gran Alacant. The rubbish situation in Gran Alacant and Santa Pola, as elsewhere in the world is mostly down to people. Rubbish dumped in the roads, dumped by the bins, not in them, and so on. On GA it almost needs a continual collection, I would think the Town Hall are damned if they do, and damned if they don’t. You will see an email in this issue showing the same problem exists in Santa Pola. If the bin lorry cannot pick up all of the excess rubbish lying around the bins, men have to follow on, picking up all of the extra rubbish. The cost of these Lorries is all included in taxes we pay so there is no extra cost. People are asked where possible to try to tip their rubbish after 9pm to avoid smelly bins. This is more important in the summer. This time of year residents should not be fined for dumping refuse during the early evenings. Suggestions have been made for a green area dumping ground in one place on GA .this has already been tried in one area, but, yes, you’ve guessed it, the area was littered with fridges, mattresses and all sorts of other rubbish, therefore knocking yet another idea on the head. Down by the beach road there is a bus stop where, in times of darkness, it is quite frightening for people to stand around waiting for a bus. This section of road comes under the Elche Town Hall, so the only way to get lighting there is to bring it to the attention of Elche Town Council. Gran Alacants new football team need your help. The team have been pitched into a very high standard league and would welcome any new players. Come to the games and support them. In their last game, 5 of the 10 players were Spanish, so everyone will be made welcome

Due to some very recent cast changes the planned production of 'Habeus Corpus' by the GASP Theatre Group has had to be postponed. The production was due to have taken place on the 7th and 8th November in the Case Del Cultura in Santa Pola. It is intended that this production, or a production of something very similar, will take place in the very early Spring 2010. Anyone wishing for further information on GASP can contact David Ashley 966697746 or 628774461.

defeat, along the way they have racked up twelve goals and only conceded two. Confidence oozes through a side who have definitely learnt how to battle for a point when not at their best. On the down side injuries to key defenders Miguel and Vicente together with a broken foot for winger Jose Fran Molina may yet prove crucial. Weʼre also entering the period when the accumulation of bookings and red cards may compel coach Domingo Grau to shuffle his pack. Just to clarify, five yellow cards and one red equate to a one game suspension with a straight red card, for whatever reason, meaning two games with a free Sunday.

These are the main ways our govenments extract money from us
La Marina..La Marina..Marina..La Marina..La Marina..La Marina..
….but we make it so easy for the government to take our money! taxation unfortunately comes to us in many forms….national insurance....income tax....capital gains tax....vat....stamp duty....tourist and departure taxes.... inheritance tax, the final “departure” tax!!! Can we avoid tax?…………well we can at least reduce what we pay Let me quickly highlight where we might be able to point you in the right
direction. VAT - if anyone knows how to avoid it let me know! Similarly with national insurance, stamp duty and capital gains tax, incidently, national insurance for the self employed in Spain is approaching 300 euros each month! Income tax….. You may remember in the UK struggling with an inland revenue tax return…….. only to be fined if you could not complete it on time? Not surprisingly, it is the same in Spain, income tax works in a similar fashion -.…..bandings and rates but the fines are more punitive!! If you struggled in the uk imagine the problems here….please use an accountant as they are very low cost in Spain. With capital gains tax avoiding it is an nigh on impossible. It is a nightmare to understand in English……try doing it in Spanish!….please use an accountant, but – As independent financial advisors, we can help you reduce the effects of income tax and inheritance tax. With income tax our main thrust is to help you avoid tax on your savings. It is impossible -without fraud- to avoid taxation of day to day earned income. Many of you will be aware that the E.U. saving tax directive has been in place a few years now and the aim of this legilsation is to raise revenue throughout the E.U. by one of two methods; one….make it less attractive to hide cash undeclared in offshore banks two…. punitively tax bank account balances. If an E.U. resident does not declare their cash, the way they intend to do this, is by witholding tax, rising over recent years to 35% the tax will be applied to all interest earned on offshore bank accounts for most people, 35% is a far higher rate of tax than would be paid by declaring bank balances! The tax man is encouraging declarations of interest earned! With careful financial planning, we can avoid most of the effects of this legislation. We use a range of long established financial institutions to wrap our clients bank accounts in what is commonly called a personal investment portfolio. These portfolios are a cost affective way of managing all of your invested assets…cash, shares …. and so on. Gains are free of income and capital gains taxes. The key is that the new E.U. witholding tax is on cash in bank accounts it does not apply to cash in portfolios……..an elegant maneovre to avoid income tax on assets. If I could now move on to inheritance tax. This is a very difficult topic to even try to outline in a short article. Here are a number of important points to remember; Spanish inheritance tax is in many ways more punitive than the uk. In the uk there is no charge for transfers between spouses, whatever the value of a deceased personʼs estate…..In Spain there is a charge to inheritance tax between spouses. Many of you may own your own home in Spain. It is vital to recognise that here we own 50% of the house each…. It is not jointly owned as is typical of the UK. This means that on the death of a spouse, a person must will their share of their assets, including property to a beneficiary, usually the surviving spouse. We would be delighted to offer advice on a face to face individual basis. Please call or email without obligation. christurton1@terra.es Office: 966 795 714 (Local, La Marina) Mobile 616 531 095 (Chris Turton Direct) www.financialadviceinspain.com

GRAN ALACANT FOOTBALL CLUB
Community spirit ...ian robertson .luton ...... It was a week when the community came together ..on oct 9th was the latest fund raising evening for Gran Alacant Football Club hosted by Los Belgas at the Carabasi complex. Not only was the bar packed to the rafters but much needed funds were raised for our communities football club. Great prizes gifted by Solbuilders ,Los Belgas ,Santa Pola F.C and many others in Gran Alacant and the fact that tickets for the prizes were sold not just at Los Belgas but at Legends as well, gave the whole evening a community feel to it. The players have been training hard over the last few weeks as the league is of a very high standard and although still waiting for our first victory, the fact that more players are joining all the time giving us a bigger squad meaning our first victory is not far away. The club is still looking for resident players over the age of 30 who are able to train on a tuesday night. Training and games take place in the Santa Pola astro turf stadium behind the local police station. I would also like to welcome the new Spanish players to the club giving the whole club a community feel about it. Thank you for your continued support for Gran Alacant Football Club Richard 676779273 or Claire 660339927 or 966695359 Luton uk 07877647922 Web site: granalacantfc.blogspot.com Minutes before kick off in the Utd dressing room before the recent 4-3 win over rivals Man City, News of the World can reveal the following was heard… ‘’Right, I want 110% effort from the word go against these city so and so’s. Remember they did us 2-1 on the 50th anniversary of Munich. If you don’t win those cockneys at Chelsea will have 6 points on us… …Now, I don’t care if you kick, punch or head butt your way to victory, you MUST win! Good luck!’’ At which point Sir Alex Ferguson walks in and says, ‘’Cheers ref, I’ll take it from here!’’

What would happen if one of us dies in Spain Ask yourselves these questions:
1. Would you know who to call in the first place? 2. Would they know the Spanish system on funerals? 3. Would they be able to cope with local laws and regulations in Spain? 4. Normally funerals are held within 48hr´s. Would family have time to get here? 5. Would funds be readily available to cover all costs? 6. Could you cope with the above at the time of great stress?
Makes you think, doesnʼt it?

A drunk man who smelled like beer sat down on a subway next to a priest. The man's tie was stained, his face was plastered with red lipstick, and a half-empty bottle of gin was sticking out of his torn coat pocket. He opened his newspaper and began reading. After a few minutes the man turned to the priest and asked, 'Say Father, what causes arthritis?' The priest replied, 'My Son, it's caused by loose living, being with cheap, wicked women, too much alcohol, contempt for your fellow man, sleeping around with prostitutes and lack of a bath.' The drunk muttered in response, 'Well, I'll be damned, ' Then returned to his paper. The priest, thinking about what he had said, nudged the man and apologized. 'I'm very sorry. I didn't mean to come on so strong. How long have you had arthritis?' The drunk answered, 'I don't have it, Father. I was just reading here that the Pope does.'

As there was 20 euro left over, this has been donated to the Gran Alacant MABS Cancer Support Group.

GRAN ALACANT F.C v BON PERIX REST PACO BAIL - 26th Oct
It was a hot tempered affair which included two sending offs....one player from each side.....and left Gran Alacant F.C still waiting for it始s first victory ..a bad injury to the Gran Alacant .F.C goalkeeper after only 10 min did not help matters and to make matters worse both teams had a player sent off after a Gran Alacant player was elbowed in the face .....things settled down after this and Gran Alacant went on to score a great goal but the odd goal at the other end left them still waiting for their first win of the season...............report courtesy of the club website

The
Santa Pola DUATH
What a spectacle in Santa Pola for the 15th running of the DUATHLON. 3km run plus 6km on the bike plus a further 3km run to finish. Over 1,000 contestants took part. The big picture shows on the right, shows the contestants at the end of the first run, turning onto the beach to get their bikes for the next 6km. Midway through the bike section, a tremendous thunder, rain and wind storm hit the area. The weather scattered all of the spectators. The finishing time arch, metal barriers and everything not tied down, all blew over, which all added up to a rather frightening few minutes. The contestants, to their credit, carried on to the finish line. The picture, bottom right, shows the organisers laying out the finish line, red carpet, flowers, finish line gantry...............then the storm hit, and blew it all away. Not to be deterred, all was back correctly for the big finish.

Hi everyone, continued from Octobers edition; (please note I do not practice the following therapies)
Other Complementary Therapies.
This is an ancient Chinese therapy increasingly used in western societies. Acupuncture is the insertion of very fine needles into the skin at certain points to help relieve pain and improve the body始s own healing mechanisms. The points are on meridians (energy Channels). If there is a blockage in energy then a part of the body connected to that meridian may become weak or ill. The needles are thought to release the blockage and help the body to heal itself.
Acupuncture
This is the same as Acupuncture but it uses thumbs or knuckles instead of needles. Pressure is applied along the meridians to release the body始s own energy-Chi-to help relieve pain and encourage the body to heal itself. The massage is similar to Shiatsu, but preformed directly onto the skin with a light oil.
Acupressure
The Alexander technique encourages healing and better health through better posture and awareness of how the body is used. It is especially useful for backache and headaches. It was developed by an actor called Frederick Mathias Alexander who discovered that improving his posture stopped him losing his voice.
Alexander technique
The Bowen technique, developed in Australia by Thomas A Bowen, aims to rebalance the body holistically using gentle moves on tissue. A Bowen practitioner can feel whether muscles are stressed or tense and use the moves to release this build up. The light rolling movements stimulate the body始s energy flows. It is not a massage or a manipulation but a gentle process that encourages the body to heal itself.
Bowen technique
I WILL CONTINUE OTHER COMPLEMENTARY THERAPIES IN JANUARY. NEXT MONTH I WILL DISCUSS GIFT IDEA始S FOR CHRISTMAS. Dott

Dear barry and sandra I am at my wits end I live on Don Pueblo fase 3 and in the last 8 months we have been flooded twice out in our basement dure to drains outside our property no working ever since life resort was built the drains have been blocked and the water has no where to go except the houses opposite I have contacted the council ,our administator life resort to no avail they still havnt done anything It hads cost me hundreds of euros to get it cleaned but apart from that its the smell i dont know who else to turn to can you put me in the right direction on who to contact as its not even autumn yet and I am scared it is going to be a re occurance and I dont think the house can take any more damage please help jim and susan roberts
Dear Sandra & Barry , once again another great informative G/A advertiser. I just wanted to make a comment on the "Great Concern the Town Hall" says it has, page 4 ,I certainly agree with its concerns about fly tipping & also the irresponsible owners who let their dogs fowl the pavements. But first a comment on the emptying of rubbish in the skips. The rubbish was originally emptied from the skips during the night so that meant any rubbish put in the skips in the mornings say at 08.00hrs was there all day which is obviously a problem .But now the skips are emptied sometime between roughtly between 09.00hrs & 12.00hrs .So if you are on your way out in the morning & pop the rubbish in the skip at 08.00hrs its only there an hour or two before it is emptied ,that sounds a reasonable time to dispose of the rubbish.Surely they can update the times to suit the emptying of the skips!!! Also what about anyone leaving after their holiday surely they are not expected to leave their rubbish at home till their next visit to Spain?Where can these people deposit their rubbish if they leave before 9pm? Regarding the fly tipping ,i have complained myself to the counsel & through our administration ,who contacted the counsel, about the flytipping on Calle Chipre & along Calle Malta. But never get any response to my complaints. If the counsel would take the time to take a look at the wasteland opposite our properties on Calle Chipre 26 & Calle Malta they might understand why some unconcerned people from the Pearlas & many from other areas dump their rubbish in this area ( photos attached.)I have stopped people when I have seen them & asked them to take the rubbish to the skips only to find they just go out of sight & dump it in Calle Malta. This land used to be scraped yearly so all the weeds etc were cut to the ground but as you see in the photos some weeds are 5ft high & very unsightly ,great to dump rubbish in & not see it !!! I would ask Loreto Cascales to call me & arrange to come & see for her self how disgraceful the area looks .But she will have to watch where she steps!!!! Maybe at your next meeting you can mention some point I make please & ask Loreto to feel free to contact me . Regards Bill Winterburn Rubbish collection in Santa Pola...
As in Gran Alacant we have in Santa Pola large rubbish bins that are emptied daily. We also around town have many recycling bins and some might have seen the new set that is now in operation in front of Pena Grande on the sea front. The problem here in town is that many people continue to place carrier bags filled with rubbish on the streets for collection, rather than walking a few yards to put the rubbish in one of the large bins. It was obviously the way collections were done some years ago and some people feel that it is their right to continue this practice. My apartment is in the centre of Santa Pola and looking down my street in the evening I can see that it is not just the odd one or two bags but sometimes in the summer months as many as 100 bags just thrown out on to the street. I look on to another apartment block and was shocked last night to see the lady in the 1st floor apartment throw about 4 or 5 bags out of the window to the street below.
So to my point, we all pay suma and Basura taxes to Santa Pola and each night we pay for a one man truck to come and empty the large bins, then following that truck we have another truck with 4 or 5 men on collecting the bags of rubbish dumped in the streets. Now I say we have a TRUCK...This probably equates to 5 or 6 trucks servicing Santa Pola daily. For a town that we hear is always in the red, should this practice be allowed to continue? Barry, I mentioned this to you a long time ago and you said that you would put these comments to the councillor for Santa Pola! Can you let us know if you did mention this at one of your meetings? Best regards, Mark.

The usufructuary neither can sell the thing (usually property) nor place a lien upon it. The owner of the thing subject to usufruct cannot use it.
USUFRUCT – a Life Time Interest and how it works
So you have heard the word but what does it really mean? It is important to understand what it is and whether or not it would work for you. As with everything the are pluses and minuses - it depends upon each individual set of circumstances.
It is a useful tool for those in a relationship with children from a previous relationship where the parent may wish to leave their property directly to their children, thus protecting their inheritance. Whilst at the same time allowing their partner/spouse to continue to reside in a property until their death.
The usufruct is the right of enjoying a thing, the property of which is actually owned by another person, and to draw from this all the utilities which it may produce, provided that it is being done without altering the substance of the thing.
The right of usufruct is extinguished in the following cases: When the usufructuary dies or acquires the property . When the usufruct is repudiated. When the thing subject to usufruct is lost. When the thing is not used within 6 years, if it is a movable effect, or within 30 years when it is an estate.
Once the right of usufruct finishes, the inheritor of the bare property can take possession usually upon the death of the person with the usufruct There exist two kinds of usufructs:
Voluntary usufruct: The parties agree the usufruct in a written contract or a will and Legal usufruct: the law provides it. That is the case of the usufruct that the surviving spouse receives of the estate's distribution.
These are only general guidelines and not definitive statements of the law, there are

Monte Mar Bowls and Social Club – Sponsored by Super Valu SABA Discovery League Monte Mar Picadors v La Marina Explorers Monte Mar Picadors – 99 shots - 8 points La Marina Explorers – 95 shots - 6 points Points are always hard to come by at La Marina, so an overall victory on ‘their turf’ was very satisfying, but was it close! The lead constantly changed hands on each of the rinks, and the points for the overall shot difference were only decided at the very end. Tom Spencer claimed that Harry Dobson’s ‘lucky wick’ with his last wood deprived them of a draw for the overall shot result. However, Harry stated that it was a specialist delivery designed to cause the maximum frustration to opponents. It worked! As a result of this specialist delivery, honours were shared three rinks apiece, but we claimed the extra two points and overall victory. Congratulations to Barry, David and Ian’s teams for their fine victories, and well done to our other three teams, who despite not winning kept plugging away and secured enough shots for victory. Federation President's Cup – Two Wood Triples On Sunday, 18 October, the semi-finals and final of this competition were played at San Luis Bowls Club. Monte Mar team of Denise Ashberry, Alan Ashberry and Harry Dobson played against a San Luis triple of Sheila Cox, Ian Young and Mike Cox in one of the semifinals, and after a thrilling game progressed to the final. The other semi-final consisted of another San Luis team of John Haigh, Brian Withers and Val Sherry against a San Miguel team of Sheila
Errington, Ian McNamara and Brian Errington with San Miguel progressing to the final. After a very close game, with high quality bowling on both sides and good sportsmanship, Monte Mar won the Cup for the second time in three years. The President’s Cup was presented to Denise, Alan and Harry by Federation President Steve Westall. Harry thanked the San Luis Bowls Club and John Featherstone for organising the competition, and all those connected and involved in the organisation of the competition. This week’s photographs just had to be of our club’s Chief Wine Taster, Harry Dobson. Apart from his ‘specialist delivery’ that secured a team victory, as mentioned above, Harry rolled back the years at San Luis, and proved that advancing years are no barrier to bowling success. Indeed he proved that the opposite can happen, as he put his years of experience into play and beat all of the ‘youngsters’ in the President’s Cup. Harry will be celebrating his 80th birthday on Boxing Day, and whilst no current photographs
of events at San Luis have passed my way, the attached photograph was taken at last year’s birthday celebration when a group of us played Indalo Bowling Club. The first photograph shows Harry with his ‘guvnor’ Rowena, and the second Harry in action. Well done Harry, many more years of success, and to Denise and Alan for your great win.

Hello everybody! As one exception, there are not Moors and Christians parades this month, however there is still something to go and have a look at, the biggest fair in the Costa Blanca that takes place in Cocentaina 29th October to the 1st of November, Cocentaina is next to Alcoy. The fair is divided in many areas: medieval, street market, agriculture trade, typical products and more. You will be able to find all kind of products there. You will need, at least, half a day to see it all. Also there are pilgrimages and local fiestas in La Nucia, Tibi, Onil, Benidorm. Bye- bye friends.

What a.....
Secret Garden
Way back in an earlier edition, we took photographs of our first secret garden. Here it is now. What an effort by these house owners. They cleared a large piece of land, worked hard on it, invested money in it, and, what a credit to them, to transform it into such a wonderful looking area. It’s great to see people on Gran Alacant doing all they can, to tidy up their area. This is the second garden, so far, good on um. Petanc competitions were run all afternoon and Spain were beaten in the final by the British team of Gordon Sutherland, Ian & Irene Steele. Winners were presented with prizes donated by Lady Annes Emporium

GOSSIPS
a reader sent us this poem which we would like to share with you all
Many think of Florence Nightingale, that lady with the lamp, many speak of famous people, films, like lady and the tramp.
But not many speak the ring of truth, that surrounds this special world, just lies, deceit and gossip, as they leave their tongues uncurled.
The sadness and hurt that they pass on, the many hearts they break, Oh!! gossips of our lovely world, what liberties you take. Nothing to do, such lonely lives, if they could only guess, what they say and what they do, puts others in distress.
What is the answer, what can be done, to make them aware of this, perhaps a gentle healing hug, maybe that始s what they miss. We all say things we shouldn始t, often thoughtless and unkind, if only people could think more, not repeating what始s on their mind.
Let始s learn lessons from each other, let no gossip, lies, be spread, say thank you for our lovely life, pray we sleep peaceful in our beds.

WHAT CAN MAKE A DOG OR CAT GET EXTREMELY THIN? Nowadays is quite uncommon to find abandoned or badly fed pets, so in most cases, when we see an extremely thin (cachectic) dog or cat, the poor body condition is normally associated to a serious disease. In some cases, the weight loss can be very quick (less than one month), but what normally occurs is a progressive, chronical weight loss: we mean, of course, animals which are having a normal daily quantity of food, and despite this, they start loosing weight. A totally different case would be the animal which refuses some kind of food according to his own preferences (for example those who only eat human food, only wet food, not dry one, or only when offered by the owner´s hand). This wouldn’t be a health problem, but an educational/behavioural one. No healthy animal will starve to death just because he doesn’t like the food. After 2-3 days the animal will normally accept any kind of food, and no weight loss will be detected. In case of dogs: -Diabetes. Canine diabetes is a very well known disease, because it looks exactly the
same than human one. The most important (and common) symptoms are eating, drinking and urinating much more than normal, but in some cases a progressive weight loss can be seen, which, at the last stages or when the disease is completely out of control, may make the dog be just skin and bones. -Cancer. Just like in people, some malignant tumours don’t cause any distress to the dog, and the only thing we can see is a progressive weight loss despite appetite keeps normal. -Intestinal parasites. They are normally associated with a poor environment and hygiene (abandoned or rescued dogs). In this case, if there is a very big amount of parasites at the intestine, the dog will look skinny, but the abdomen will look swollen, and we’ll be able to detect worms in the motions. -Addison disease. This one consists on a hypofunction of adrenal glands (so, it would be the opposite to Cushing syndrome). It normally produces chronical vomiting and renal failure, and of course, a very important weight loss. This is not a very common disease, but must be taken into account in case of extreme thinness. It’s very easy to detect and treat, but, due to the abnormality of the adrenal glands, if steroids seric levels fall down,

an Addisonian crisis (a kind of coma) will appear, which is an emergency. -Exocrine pancreas crhonical failure. Exocrine pancreas produces a very important part of the digestive enzymes (remember endocrine one produces insulin) , so, when it fails, the animal will always be hungry, but despite this, he will get thinner and thinner, because he is unable to absorb the energy which comes from the food. The treatment consists on supplying pancreas enzymes together with the diet. -Leishmaniosis. As everyone should know now, one of the classical symptoms of the mosquito disease is progressive and important weight loss, but remember a poor coat, diarrhoea, limping, etc, may also be symptoms of this terrible disease. Apart from these specific diseases, every serious chronical disease may produce a weight loss, but in these cases, the owner normally realizes there is something wrong previous to the weight loss. In case of cats: -Diabetes and cancer. Same as dogs. -FIV infection (feline AIDS). In case of an indoor cat, immunosupresion may not show any remarkable sign, and we only realize the cat is ill when he starts loosing weight. -Hyperthyroidism. Cats which suffer this problem loose a lot of weight (over 30%), are always hungry, and very active, which makes the
owner think that the cat is not ill, just “nervous”, because the appetite is OK, and normally starts worrying when the cat gets too skinny. -Kidney failure. It’s a very common process is old cats (over 10 years). The common signs are an increased quantity of urine, and drinking more than normal. In case of cats, because sometimes kidney failure may be associated with high blood pressure, nose bleeding may be reported. All these feline and canine diseases normally have a long evolution, and are normally showing at the first stages signs and symptoms which normally don’t make the owner worry, because the appetite is still OK (or even increased), and he takes the pet to the Vet when the weight loss is very important. In order to start an early treatment, regular weight control is a very useful tool for detecting abnormalities at their first stages. Anyway, in domestic feline and canine population, the most common problem is the opposite: overweight. It’s sad, because obesity is a disease caused, in most cases, by the owner by overfeeding the animal. Fat dogs and cats are not happy. Liliana Aldeguer Cerdán Vet col nº 793. Marvellous things, helicopters. They fly up, down, sideways and backwards without any bother at all, and I should know – I commute to work in one. Now before you all start writing begging letters on the assumption that I must be a multi-millionaire, I should hasten to add that I share my helicopter with 18 other glum souls, we are all being transported out to the grim and grey North Sea oil rigs for two or three weeks of toil and tedium. The only good thing about that is that it makes Spain so much nicer to visit in between these offshore trips. Leonardo da Vinci, who as you may know actually drew the first design for a helicopter and was interested in absolutely everything that was around him, might have got some of his inspiration from wondering how dragonflies hovered and flew the way they do. Indeed, one of the first commercially successful helicopters made in the UK was known as the Westland Dragonfly. There are 70 or more different species of dragonflies and their smaller damselfly relatives to be found in Spain, but two of the commonest and most easily identified are in the photos. The Red Darter is the bright red one,

holding the more yellow female of the
species, and the blue one is the Emperor Dragonfly, one of the larger of the European dragonfly species – this photo was kindly supplied to me by John Oliver, another keen wildlife
photographer from Gran Alacant. You can’t have failed to notice over the last month just how many dragonflies there are in and around the Clot, and that is because they need water for both living and breeding – some dragonfly larvae may spend up to 2 years as an underwater nymph, followed by just 6 weeks as a flying adult. During this flying time, they stake out a territory and defend it against other males, whilst grabbing any passing female to mate with. This causes the peculiar sight you may have seen where two dragonflies will fly about locked together, as shown in the photos. The Red Darter pair fly along just above the water, the female dipping her tail just below the surface as she lays her eggs; the Emperor pair hold on to a convenient reed while attaching the eggs underwater. You need never fear the dragonfly (Libelula in Spanish); they don’t bite or sting, they are far more interested in seeing off rivals and courting the dragonfly ladies. So you can just watch and appreciate them, while those nasty mosquitoes treat you like a mobile selection of tapas. See you next month.
