Gran Alacant Advertiser continues to bring you all the local NEWS including information from the local Town Hall representative. Working for the local community since May 2005. If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please email on granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.com Q: Barking Dogs I own a Serena in Escandinavia 2 close to the swimming pool, and my wife and I have just spent a 3-week holiday in the apartment. We cut the holiday short by 10 days because of the continual barking of nearby dogs, all day and on occasions all night. I've sent an email to Mediterranean who looks after the complex. They sent an email to all people who have email addresses to control their dogs. That made no difference at all. What can be done to stop this, in England this is classed as anti-social behaviour and would not be tolerated. We are back out at the end of October and hope to see a difference. If not I might have to sell up. Nick Answer by GA Councillor Oscar Valenzuela: First of all, speak with the community administrator to try to resolve this problem with them. The second option is to file a complaint with the local police as we have a municipal ordinance for this. Q: Dilapidated areas in GA Hi Lou & Ged Sometimes it is with dismay that I look around GA , it has the potential to be a really lovely area for people who live here & come on holiday. But when I walk by the empty units opposite the viewing point (pictures attached), where Good View restaurant is, and see how run down & dilapidated the whole row of units have become it is very disheartening. This area should be a magnet for people
4
to come to dine & relax, as it has such a fantastic vista, instead it is now an eye sore. Can you please ask our local Councillor if the Council intend to do anything to force the landlords of these units to either renovate them & open them up or sell them to someone who will? Also, can you ask our Councillor about the building, electricity sub station I think , that is half way up the road leading to the library. Again, another eye sore in the area as it has lots of graffiti on it Can this be repainted and railed off so it is harder for this type of thing to keep happening? The benches along this stretch of road could also do with a revamp.
Some nice flower pots at each bench would look so attractive and encourage people to sit, chat and enjoy the views.

I know someone will say irrigation is an issue for the plants but surely there is some kind of native planting that is hardy & would grow well without much looking after. Keep up the great work you are doing with the magazine. Best regards Fiona Answer by GA Councillor Oscar Valenzuela: With regards to the empty units we can try to contact the owners and ask them to clean up and repaint to cover the graffiti, but unless it’s a public hazard there is not much else that we as the Town hall can do LATEST NEWS FROM THE GA COUNCILLOR OSCAR VALENZUELA
Ambulance and better medical facilities for Gran Alacant On the 14th of October a person sadly lost their life in Gran Alacant. The attending ambulance took 20 minutes to arrive, which has highlighted the need to improve medical care in our neighbourhood. Year after year we have been unsuccessful in our efforts to convince the Valencian Government Health Department to assert its power to increase the facilities in our region. There is only ONE ambulance that covers Santa Pola and all the districts of Elche, including El Altet, Los Arenales and La Marina. So the fact that it only took 20 minutes is actually amazing, it is sad to think how much longer it would have taken if there was another incident at or around the same time. On a municipal level, we have stretched our powers to their limits by agreeing with the Red Cross that they provide first aid care in the beach area, however, we do not have the power to hire an ambulance or build a health centre. We have regular meetings with the medical and nursing Directors at the Hospital of Elche, on who we depend for health matters, regarding the health care

as they are privately owned. With regards to the graffiti on the electricity substation and the need to repaint the benches, from the beginning of October and for the first time ever, Gran Alacant now has a dedicated team that are responsible for gardening/parks and maintenance. They will be working closely with URBASER from Mondays to Fridays to ensure that repairs, including repainting the benches and ongoing maintenance happen in a timely manner, so you should start to see improvements in the very near future. received in Santa Pola and Gran Alacant and are always told that we can go to the Santa Pola Health Centre or the El Altet outpatient clinic, however both of these options mean travelling along a stretch of the N332 which is notoriously dangerous due to the increasing number of accidents (the most recent serious one occurred today!), black spots and massive surge in traffic during the Summer months. These issues also affect the ability for the ambulance to reach Gran Alacant efficiently. Water consumption studies show that Gran Alacant has a fixed population in the Winter to Spring of 20,000 people which increases to 35,000 during the Summer. The fact that these figures were collated whilst we are in the midst of a pandemic with confinements and tourist and movement limitations, prove that the size of our population needs to have better support services. We will continue to insist that the needs of the real population of Gran Alacant and the municipality should be made a priority as the lack of services is literally playing with people's lives. Fumigation Fumigation efforts continue weekly throughout Gran Alacant, especially in the area of the Clot. Although we have not detected any recent outbreaks we need to continue to fumigate the area to help combat and control the amount of mosquitoes, especially after rains and subsequent increase in temperatures.

Department of cleaning, parks and gardens In September, large groups of workers were brought in to combat some of the areas in Gran Alacant that have been overlooked for a long time. In an effort to meet the needs of the neighbourhood and respond quickly and efficiently to demands from the population of Gran Alacant, Encarni Ramírez, Councillor for cleaning, parks and gardens, has appointed a 4 person team
that will solely be based in Gran Alacant. The team started work at the beginning of October and will initially respond to several urgent complaints that have been received from residents. Subsequently they will continue to carry out clearing, pruning, cleaning and maintenance works around Gran Alacant to prevent the issues that have been seen in the past. New Basketball Court On the 21st September, in response to requests from residents, the department of cleaning, parks and gardens started work on the installation of a half size Basketball court to replace the existing one that has fallen into disrepair next to the dog park. At 17 x 13 metres, this size of court is approved for 3-a-side games. The court will be redesigned so that the basket can be located in a different position to ensure that it is less affected by the sun and it will also be fitted with an anti-vandal net. The playing surface of the court will be made up of several layers of concrete and finished with a non-slip float finish. Municipal Natural Park of the Sierra and Cabo de Santa Pola The Santa Pola council met with residents within the municipality on the 1st of October to discuss the landscape study for the future of the Municipal Natural Park of the Sierra and Cabo de Santa Pola. More news on this to follow.

DEMOLITION OF THE OLD HOTEL DE ARENALES DEL SOL
The demolition of the old Hotel de Arenales del Sol began on Tuesday 19 October. The works are expected to take 3 weeks and later a phase of regeneration and renaturalization of the beach will begin. It is the second phase of work that began early summer
during which around a thousand pounds of asbestos was removed and deposited in landfill. Local Councllor Gonzalez said “We are in the final stretch of a decision taken in 1997 and that as a result of a long administrative and judicial battle now culminates with this situation that we have experienced for so long and that has been so complex to solve”. The government team say next summer visitors and neighbours of Arenales del Sol will be able to enjoy one of the best beaches of the Costa Blanca and the Valencian Community.

FLU OR INFLUENZA What is influenza? It is an acute respiratory disease, produced by the influenza virus. Unlike the common cold, its symptoms are of greater intensity and severity. The duration of the disease is "self-limited", that is, it improves on its own after a few days. However, it can sometimes lead to more serious conditions, such as pneumonia and other complications, which rarely can lead to death. These complications occur especially in the elderly, in people with chronic diseases, in nursing children and in pregnant women. How is it spread? Flu is usually spread between sick and healthy people through droplets of saliva that are generated by coughing or sneezing. The main mechanism is through the hands, which touch surfaces contaminated with respiratory secretions of a patient who recently coughed and sneezed. By putting contaminated hands to your face, the virus enters the respiratory tract. For this reason, frequent hand washing and covering your mouth when coughing or sneezing when sick is important. It is also recommended that the patient wears a mask when in the presence of other people. The incubation period (which is the time that elapses between infection and the appearance of the first symptom) lasts between one to four days.
14
What are your symptoms? The most notorious thing about influenza is that it manifests itself suddenly, without prior warnings, causing a sudden high fever (above 38 degrees) which lasts an average of two or three days, and can reach a week. Along with high fever, the disease is accompanied by fatigue or weakness that can be extreme, which in the case of older adults can last longer than normal (two to five days). It is also common for the person to suffer from a headache. Painful swallowing and coughing, muscle pain, joint pain, and light discomfort are common, symptoms that can last for more than a week. Sometimes stomach problems (such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea) and otitis can appear, although these symptoms are more frequent in children. Influenza can also aggravate the symptoms of other illnesses that people already have, such as: heart failure, diabetes, pneumonia from bacterial super-infection, dehydration, and others. Difficulty breathing is one of the most serious complications that can occur in children. How to prevent it? For seasonal influenza there is a vaccine that is given annually and is indicated in all people. Each year the campaign is for

those who are at higher risk of complications from influenza, such as the elderly, pregnant women, infants and those with chronic diseases. Vaccination is also indicated for all health personnel. Influenza can be prevented by practicing basic hygiene measures, such as frequent hand washing with soap and water or alcohol-gel preparations and the proper use of tissues to cover the mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing. And using mask. Treatment and prognosis Most people recover spontaneously with only general measures such as drinking plenty of fluids, using feverreducing medications (antipyretics), and bed rest. In people with more severe symptoms, antivirals can be used to treat the infection. It is important to rest and avoid visits from other people so as not to spread the disease. Flu Vaccination In G.A. Family Doctors, we have the flu vaccination campaign, and the doctors can give you more information and take care of your health problems if you need it.

OLD AGE CREEPING ON … No not a sentence from a racy novel for the retired, just a fact. I keep being reminded that next year I reach the Big 60. There are many things that remind me: 1. I’d make a rubbish burglar because my knees make too much noise. 2. Now I know why if I order a 3 course meal in a restaurant, they want me to pay up front. I’ve realised that to live to 100 you must give up all the things that make you want to live to 100. So to hell with it! Carry on as normal. The trouble is our mental age never changes, so I’d like to apologise now for the next 20 years of bad behaviour! Life is like a 2-week holiday, the first week goes slowly, but before you know it, you’re on the plane home, so we should all make the most of every day. Summer has now come to an end, but GA seems to carry on regardless. It is good news to see a new supermarket imminent, it will certainly take away some of the stress of battling through Mercadona in the middle of July. I could theoretically walk to the new one, but lets not get silly. People have been filling Gabe Market keen to empty their shelves ahead of their relocation. Who knew I needed 42 photo frames, 76 lightbulbs, and a plastic ornament that plays roll out the barrel? Well with 50% off I did! Life continues to return to normal after COVID, we will all be happy when all that is, is a page in a history book! Travel between Spain and the UK has become a little easier with the removal of day 2 PCR tests in favour of lateral flow tests, which I understand is far cheaper and doesn’t

require you to locate a mysteriously hidden drop box. Getting back into my old way of working face to face, rather than zoom calls and emails, was odd at first. Reticence about travel will still hold some back from travelling this year I think, but I do believe 2022 will be record breaking here. It was nice to visit the old country last month. Spend time with my elderly Dad, and not so elderly kids. Managed to visit Diddly squat farm, home of Jeremy Clarkson’s latest TV series on farming. Bought a few questionably un PC souvenirs. Weather was stunning and reminds you that Britain in the sunshine is a beautiful place. It just needs more of it! Christmas lies around the corner. I cannot believe how quick time flies. I spent 12 years in school as a child, the same amount of time as I have spent in Spain, and I’m darned sure the 12 years at school didn’t go as fast. I’ll struggle with the usual ‘what do you want’ questions, and I’ll give the usual ‘haven’t got a clue’ answer. I’m a lucky man, and certainly as you get older you place less value on trinkets and more on memories. After all, at the end that’s all you are left with. Hope you all have a great November; GA is the place to be. Get out there, make new friends, start building the foundations for an amazing 2022. Disagree with anything? What an opinion you have discussed? Message me on terry@montelinvestments.co.uk (putting Terry Talks in the subject matter) Or you can comment on the online version of the magazine on facebook.

AFTERNOON TEA ANYONE? The small town of Crevillente lies about 40 minutes drive inland from Gran Alacant. It is pleasant and known for its carpet weavers but otherwise fairly nondescript. However, situated in the countryside outside of the town is a place of magic and enchantment; the Carmen del Campillo Teteria or also known as “Tetería Crevillente” or Crevillente teahouse.
To call this establishment a tea house is somewhat misleading, tea is certainly served along with cakes but it is the gardens and buildings that are the main reason for visiting. The tea house is a complex of buildings and pavilions set in a walled Moroccan style garden of about two hectares. One is free to explore at will a world of galleries, halls, courtyards and rooftops designed and decorated to evoke the Maghreb, all set amongst pools and shady paths.
We both have a love of tea and gardens and had also been told wonderful things about the hidden teahouse of Crevilente, so a visit was only a matter of time. One quiet Sunday afternoon we decided to pay a long overdue visit and we were not disappointed, indeed everything we had been told did not do justice to the secret paradise we found.
58
Yet this fantasy of a Moorish past is actually only around 40 years old. It is the creation of a gentleman called Harun who was determined to make a slice of paradise in the Spanish countryside and ultimately opened his dream to visitors as a tea house. Many of the furnishings are from Morocco where Harun has family. The attention to detail is breathtaking with each area giving way to fresh vistas or secret enclosed spaces. The gardens invite one to imagine oneself in a Marrakech riad or the lost Moorish paradise of al-Andalus. The tea house avoids being kitsch or derivative by the care and obvious love with which it creates its fantasy world.
HOME TURF CARABASSI CENTRE
Above all, the gardens are a beautiful space in which to spend time. Hugely popular with local people who come to sit late into the night (the tea house stays open till the early hours) drinking tea and chatting. The house offers a wide range of teas including some special spiced and herbal mixes with colourful names clearly designed to encourage one to journey to more exotic times and places.
tea on divans set amongst trees in Samarkand, on rooftops in Tangier and at tables in covered markets in Istanbul. Tea houses located in gardens are especially important in Islamic culture since the garden is a representation of paradise and hence carries a spiritual message reminding the visitor of better things to come after this earthly life is over. The famously magnificent gardens of the Alhambra Palace in Granada are a reminder that Spain itself was once part of this wider Muslim world. It is this ancient and civilised culture that the tea house of Carmen del Campillo successfully seeks to recreate. We also have a liking for gardens and since moving to Spain have joined the Mediterranean Garden Society in pursuit of greener fingers. If you like plants and gardens and would like to explore and learn more about gardening in our climate check out www.mediterraneangardensociety.org The society has a Costa Blanca branch. Ultimately when visiting a garden such as the Crevillente tea house it is for each visitor to create their own fantasy from the beautiful spaces behind the walls. WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? TRUST US
by Mark Etheridge
KINGFISHER for several minutes before darting off again. One thing to look for is a patch of orange on the lower bill – if it has that it is a female bird, if the bill is all-black as in my photograph you are looking at a male. Other than that, the sexes are identical. You can also listen out for their high piping call, which is often the first indication that they are about.
Last month, I wrote about the reintroduction of the rare Marbled Duck to the Clot, and the steps which have been taken to improve the wetland environment for this species. This has also had positive knock-on effects on other species, and this month we are looking at one of the most spectacular birds to be found in our area – the Kingfisher. If you had been visiting the Clot more than three or four years ago, a Kingfisher would have been an uncommon sight – indeed, in more than fifteen years of watching birds in the Clot, I had only seen them on two or three occasions. These days, you are almost certain to see one, even if it is only the usual sighting of a tiny blue and orange exocet missile skimming low across the water in front of you for a few seconds. But patience pays dividends! Sometimes you can watch them in flight, and if you are lucky they will perch in the open on one of the reedbeds opposite you. This is where a pair of binoculars will come in handy; when they land in view they may stay there
86 86
The good news about their colonisation of the Clot is that it proves the quality of the ecosystem. Kingfishers are good indicators of clear and high quality water, and it is now certain that these birds are breeding in the Clot whereas before they were absent. Their nests will be holes in waterside banks, where they will lay two broods of 5 to 7 eggs, but sometimes up to 10. Not all of the chicks will make it to adulthood, but enough will survive to make them a welcome resident in the area. In chatting to fellow birders, we estimate that there might be up to ten breeding pairs in the Clot. They feed on small fish of course, but what is not so well known is that they take insects too, such as dragonfly larvae and water beetles, as well as aquatic shrimps. They don't have the problem that their northern brothers and sisters have of the water freezing over, so remain faithful to the local area while it can still support them Last month I was sitting in the hide at the Charco Pool watching a Kingfisher perched in the opposite reedbed. An older Spanish gentleman turned up, and enquired of me “Martin Pescador?” I was able to point out where the bird was sitting, and the expression of delight on his face was an absolute picture. Kingfishers just get people that way! You can see more photos of our local wildlife by visiting https://marketheridge.smugmug.com/

DRAFT OF ANIMAL PROTECTION ACT (I)
Spanish Parliament is going to approve within the following months a new (and more strict) Animal Protection and Welfare law. So far, the legal text is not definitive yet, and the content is not 100% developed. Just like any other legal text, lots of articles will be modified before its definitive approval.
Most people have probably heard about it at the news. Our most important recommendation is not to believe everything they say about it, since there are lots of hoaxes and fake news everywhere. The only 100% reliable source of information is official Spanish Government websites, and, of course, your Vet. Here are some things the new law says about companion animals: •
They must live at home with their family in good health and hygienic conditions.
•
Those animals, which can’t live at home due to their special features, must live in proper facilities according species and breed, and the facilities must offer them protection against cold and hot weather.
• Social animals must live with other members of the species, never isolated. • Uncontrolled reproduction must end. This implies, for example, animals which can go outdoors must be neutered. Animals belonging to the same species which share a home can’t reproduce EXCEPT IN CASE OF AN OFFICIALL REGISTERED PROFESSIONAL BREEDER. This implies, at least, in case you have males and females of the same species at home, all the males or all the females must be neutered. •
96
An animal cannot be left in a car exposed to high temperatures.
• An animal cannot walk off the lead without supervision. • An animal cannot spend all the day chained. This is becoming fortunately more and more uncommon, but sometimes you can see it in case of large country houses, just to stop the dog approaching to the fence. This will be totally forbidden. •
The owner must clean its pet’s faeces and urine in every case, even at the countryside.
•
Dogs must pass a behavioural test. The way this test is going to be performed is not developed yet.
• Mandatory Veterinary treatments will be easier for the owner. • Cages, aquariums and terrariums will have minimum requirements according to the species. •
Breeding will be forbidden, except for professional breeders (professional implies, of course, paying VAT and other taxes every professional pays).
•
Animals will be allowed to enter public and private establishments, except in case of risk for people.
•
Animals will be allowed to use means of transport. In case of car rental with a driver it will be the driver’s decision
• •
Animals cannot be sent away by courier. Animal transportation businesses must be exclusive for animals. Animals can access everywhere except if there is a sign perfectly visible from the exterior forbidding it.
We will continue informing about this new regulation after Christmas.

BICI GRAN ALACANT
We are a small group who spend most of the time here in Gran Alacant. If you are interested in joining one of our rides look us up on Facebook Gran Alacant Road Cyclist (Bici Gran Alacant) where ride details are posted.
GRAN ALACANT WALKING FOOTBALL
We have been informed that the area behind the Gran Alacant Indoor Sports Centre will be converted to provide an astroturf multi-sport area. We believe that this proposed work has now been included in the Santa Pola budgeting and we can look forward to future news regarding the time frame of the project. We also understand the upgrading of the playing surface of the Pereira Stadium in Santa Pola will hopefully be completed this calendar year. The numbers attending our Indoor Sessions on Wednesdays at 11am are steady and we are seeing some old familiar faces
return as the Covid-travel restrictions with the UK are relaxed. There will be a meeting of all interested members at Shooters Bar, Carabassi Centre on Tuesday 9th November at 12 noon. Among the things to be decided will be finding a new treasurer and kit-man for the group as Clive Bailey has decided to retire from both positions. Clive has done a great job for the past 2 years and we all thank him for his diligence to keep the club intact during the difficulties caused by Covid. Stay safe everyone… John Fraser +44 7866315087 I +34 630 582322

GA RUNNING GROUP
THE (CONTINUING) ADVENTURES OF THE GRAN ALACANT RUNNERS We had a new runner join us this month, Eileen who recently competed in the Wigan 10k and who joined us for a run through Gran Alacant and Los Arenales. Philippe has had another set back after the recent treatment he had on his knee and is now awaiting confirmation on what procedure, if any, is available for him. We wish him a speedy recovery.
Claudia, Brigitte, Jan, Eileen and Geoff, met for a run from Gran Alacant through Los Arenales. To spice things up there was a section in
Jeanne cracked a rib in a biking fall which put her out of action for a few weeks, but she is back running around the Clot with no loss of form. Lou is slowly recovering and has attempted a few short runs. Andy continues to run his training sessions before he starts work and Graeme can be seen burning up the streets in Gateshead. Claudia and Brigitte travelled to Valencia to run in the half marathon, and we will hear more from them next month when they provide some detail on their current challenges. Staffan will visit during this next month and will join with Brigitte, Claudia, Jeanne and Jan. Hopefully they can meet up for a run and perhaps, some light refreshments. It’s been an enjoyable month with the group. With the cooling of the days it has been more enjoyable to run, plus we haven’t had to get up at crazy o’clock to avoid the sun, but more importantly, we finally got to meet each other. The running group first formed in the month before lockdown, during which Claudia, Brigitte and Philippe travelled to Benidorm to compete in the Benidorm 10k, but since then it has been almost impossible to meet as a group. However in October we had two meet ups; one as a joint run and one as a social get together. On 12th October,
the middle where we raced over a 3.5km course. And to even things up everyone was given a handicap, with the slower ones setting of first. It proved to be highly competitive and was enjoyed by those who took part. On 17th October we met at Skippers bar for a coffee in the sunshine to meet new friends and share stories of yore.
No matter what your ability, if you are visiting the area and want to run with someone, please get in touch.
