Remember this is the month to put the clocks back The Los Belgas wordsearch was won by Dean Briggs and Ter Dans Ilse. It is now a year ago since we introduced our news in two extra languages, so we hope it has encouraged other nationalities to the magazine. News in Spanish
¿Cuándo van a empezar?

If you have any questions you would like us to put to Loreto next month, please email them to us at the magazine.
Si tiene alguna pregunta mándenos un email y hablaremos con Loreto el mes que viene.

As MABS grows we are constantly in need of more volunteers. If you think your readers or listeners may have time on their hands; please think of ways you could help us to encourage them to join us. Thank you. There are now four main branches and several area offices of the charity in many geographical areas from Valencia to Gibraltar. All need their Volunteers: Supporters, Drivers, Translators and, indeed, people who can ‘just be a buddy’ who’ll pop in for a cuppa, do a bit of shopping or just be there to listen. MABS Cancer Support Group offers support and kindness to cancer patients. The support group was started in 1999 by Jacqui Phillips MBE along with others who had been affected by cancer but had no one in Spain to turn to for advice and support. Together they decided that ex-pats should not have to worry like they’d had to about translation between themselves and medical staff, the lack of technical information about their cancer, transportation to and from hospital appointments and support for family and friends. The ladies were firmly determined to address all these things, and more, for cancer patients in the future. Today MABS helps all nationalities, including Spanish speaking residents. MABS Cancer Support Group is registered charity number 7261.

MEN IN HEAVEN When everyone on earth was dead and waiting to enter Paradise , God appeared and said, "I want the men to make two lines. One line is for the men who were true heads of their household, and the other line for the men who were dominated by their women. I want all the women to report to St. Peter." Soon, the women were gone, and there were two lines of men. The line of the men who were dominated by their wives was 100 miles long, and in the line of men who truly were heads of their household, there was only one man. God said "You men should be ashamed of yourselves, I created you to be the head of your household! You have been disobedient and have not fulfilled your purpose! Of all of you, only one obeyed. Learn from him." God turned to the one man, "How did you manage to be the only one in this line?" The man replied, "My wife told me to stand here."

MONTEMAR BOWLS AND SOCIAL CLUB (Sponsored by Super Valu) The Sixth Santa Pola mixed rinks competition Sponsored by the Ayuntamiento of Santa Pola
Day 1. The Mayor of Santa Pola gave an opening address where he welcomed us all to this annual competition. He particularly thanked all those involved in organising and setting up the event and hoped that all the competitors would enjoy the day and the facilities of Monte Mar bowls club, the Rincon and those of Santa Pola. June Pardoe translated into English. A good days bowling was achieved with some very good play. Below Loreto Cascales a Councilor of Santa Pola in action, and with this shot put her team in control of the final end against a team from Montemar.
and they went into an 11 shot to 9 lead, they increased this to 12 to 9 on the penultimate end. The final end also caused the spectators to “Awe and Ah” at the quality of the bowling. Quesada tried hard but Emerald Isle held out for another shot advantage. Final score Emerald Isle 13, Quesada 9.
From left to right, Keith Jones (Emerald Isle Skip), Peta Rhodes, June Jones, Fred Roberts (Quesada Skip), Colin Lindgren, Deidre Leeming, Steve Pearson and Jason Prokopowycz.
After the final and presentations, the players were invited to a buffet followed by a flamenco exhibition.
That concluded another successful Santa Pola Mixed Rinks Competition.
Day 2. Another day of good bowling and there are some good teams going into tomorrowʼs final session.
Day 3. Itʼs all about class now and we were not to be disappointed. The finalists were the best teams from Quesada and Emerald Isle. Emerald Isle got away to a very good start and went into a six to 1 shot lead. Quesada came back with a vengeance and by the 11th end were 9 shots to 7 ahead. On the 12th end, some magnificent play from Emerald Isle

Hi Barry.
Could you please put this in the October Magazine. The MABS Show that was due to be held at theatre in Santa Pola on 14th 15th 16th November has been cancelled by the council because Loretta says that it is now needed for the national election campaign. It is a shame as it was booked in April. Fortunately. Terry & Lyn O'shea (Terryoke) has purchased the Facon premises at the Carabassi Complex, which is to be opened as Molly Malone's. They have kindly offered us the venue to perform the show on the same dates. More information will be following via posters and GA forums & November GA Magazine edition. Jean & Bill

Hi to everybody in Santa Pola or in the Costa Blanca.
More fiestas in October, but as the temperature, the atmosphere about fiestas is cooling down. Anyway you can still show your friends and relatives the parades in: Crevillent 1st to 4th, Rafal 5th to 7th, Planes 3rd , Callosa dʼen Sarria 9th to 11th, Campello 12th to 15th and Calpe 21st to 24th. Remember these are just approximate dates! There are also local fiestas in Jalon 16th to 17th, Polop 2nd to 4th or pilgrimages like the well-known in Benejuzar “el Pilar” on the 12th. And the popular “ Abel Anton – Gran Alacant “ race on the 16th.
This is all for now
50th Rachel would like to thank all friends and family for all the lovely cards and gifts she received on her 50th birthday. Special thanks to all at Churchill's bar for providing the venue, Not Just Desserts for supplying an excellent buffet and delicious birthday cake and Kevin ( Mr. Bojangles) for providing superb entertainment. Thanks to everyone for making it such a memorable occasion.

POLICE While taking a routine vandalism report at an elementary school, I was interrupted by a little girl about 6 years old. Looking up and down at my uniform, she asked, "Are you a cop?" "Well, then," she said as she extended her foot toward me, "would you please tie my shoe?"

FLUORESCENT CATS (AND OTHER VETERINARIAN CONTRIBUTIONS TO SCIENCE)
70
Last week some news about AIDS research appeared at the papers. It was about an experiment at Mayo Clinic which involved some doctors, virologists, vets, and other scientists. The full article can be found at: http:// www.nature.com/nmeth/journal/vaop/ncurrent/full/nmeth.1703.html The thing is the following: they created fluorescent cats which are immune to FIV (feline AIDS), by using genetic engineering. They implanted some jellyfish genes which produced the fluorescence, plus some Rhesus macaque genes, which made the cat immune to FIV. We all know from long time ago cats suffer a very similar disease to human AIDS (but not transmissible from cats to people). Both diseases are caused by very similar viruses which produce very similar alterations of the immunity. This implies every advance in FIV research, can be useful for AIDS as well. It’s not a cure or a vaccine, but it allows us to know something else about both human and feline diseases. In this case, the most significant thing for us is the acknowledgment of the Vets and their tasks. Lots of people recognize Vets task is valuable because a Vet healed their pets, or maybe he gave them some good advice, but very few people really know how important Vets are for human health. For example it’s a veterinarian task to overview the food for making sure it arrives to us in good condition, which implies inspection of slaughterhouses, dairy farms, alimentary industries, bars, restaurants, bakeries, markets, etc; we also have the responsibility of training waiters, cooks, bakers, butchers, etc, for obtaining the “Carnet de Manipulador de Alimentos” (food manipulator license). From early ages, the civilizations which had a faster evolution were the ones that had the services from Vets who took care of, for example, battle horses. Here in Spain, the Arabs transmitted us in one hand their deep medical knowledge, and in the other hand the way they took care of their extremely valuable horses. For that reason, Veterinary medicine had an important and quick evolution in Spain at the Middle Age. Short time ago, thanks to the effort of lots of Vets worldwide, we managed to control diseases such as Mad Cows Disease or Bird Flu. So we would like to write about some Vets whose task contributed to the evolution of Sciences, not only Vet science, but in some cases things that have very little to do with animals: -Blood circulation discovery. No, it wasn’t William Harvey in 1628, nor the Spanish doctor and theologian Michael Servetus in 1553 the first one to describe blood circulation. It was Francisco de la Reina (not a relative of mine, as far as I know, despite one of my grandpas had the same name), a Spanish albeytar (the Medieval Spanish word for “Vet”),
who described it first in 1552, at his book “Libro de Albeytería” (Handbook of Veterinary Science). If you think about it, it’s quite normal a Vet discovered it instead of a doctor, because in the 16th Century, human dissection was strictly forbidden in most Christian countries, but Vets had no problem at all dissecting animals. -Anti-tuberculosis vaccine. It was discovered by the French Vets Camile Guérin and Charles Calmette. -Rabies mechanism of transmission and infection, by the 19th Century Spanish Vet Dalmacio García Izcara. -Parasitology. Vets have always been more advanced than doctors in this area, and thanks to them, we know everything about hydatid cysts, intestinal and pulmonary worms, etc. -Immunology: phagocytosis mechanism discovered by Metchnikoff; cytotoxic T cells mechanism, which is very important for fighting against cancer, viral infections and chronic inflammatory problems, discovered by Peter Doherty, who won Nobel Prize of Medicine in 1996 for this reason. -And finally, let’s don’t forget a very famous Scottish Vet named John Boyd Dunlop, who invented tires for improving his son’s bicycle…

Melody Makers International annouce their next concert
Melody Makers International, the leading popular mixed chorus which had such a big hit with their recent performances of their Andrew Lloyd Webber concerts, are seeking new members to bolster numbers in readiness for their next big production - An Evening with Disney, to be held in January.
There are two opportunities for serious singers to join the group. The first is on a Tuesday evening from 5.30pm - 7.30pm at the Asturias Restaurante at Punta Prima, where Melody Makers have rehearsed for some years.
The second opportunity - for singers who live a little further up the coast, or who are not available on Tuesdays - is on a Friday morning between 11am and 1pm in Gran Alacant, where Melody Makers International have opened their second branch. Rehearsals will take place at the Sala Municipal Life Resort, Monte de Santa Pola, Gran Alacant. The same training will be given to both choirs, who will then join together for the large performances which the group has become accustomed to giving. When I arrived home one day, I found the wife seated in the tall grass, busily snipping away with a tiny pair of sewing scissors. I watched silently for a short time and then went into the house. I was gone only a minute, and when I came out again I handed her a toothbrush. I said, "When you finish cutting the grass, you might as well sweep the driveway."
The doctors say I will walk again, but I will always have a limp.
