We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, including that from a representative from the Town Hall, as we have since May 2005.

If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine - granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.co.uk Q: Community Safety Over time, and more especially on market days during the most busy times of the year, it has become very apparent that the road (Calle Monte de st pola) which borders Altomar Two and close to bungalows 66 and 68 and the market venue, has the potential, in my opinion and that of my neighbours, of being the scene of a serious road traffic accident. Having monitored the vehicles using the road, and the pedestrian traffic crossing the same road from all areas of proximity to the market, it becomes very evident that cars and motor cycles are travelling far faster than the law allows and the road conditions dictate, thereby putting the safety of all pedestrians at risk. During the times of the market, especially during the holiday periods, pedestrian traffic obviously peaks and those crossing the road comprises of the elderly, small children (some of which are not accompanied), holidaymakers and property owners. This me-lee and throng of people have their main objective and concentration focused on visiting the market and enjoying everything it has to offer. And therefore occasionally, they will not always be paying due attention to the possible real inherent dangers of crossing an extremely fast and potentially life threatening road. Through your magazine, may I and some of my neighbours, request that a survey be undertaken by the traffic police, in consultation with the Town Hall etc to the possibility of traffic calming measures being introduced on the stretch of road just outside or near to the automatic barrier gate of Altomar Two on the road running parallel to the market? This small but effective measure, would I am sure be supported by most people , and help to keep all members of the public safe on our roads ! Children and the elderly are particularly at risk, and it would be a very sad tragedy for everyone if the warning

signs were ignored to the detriment of this very vulnerable group ? Yours sincerely, MJ Clifford Altomar Two Property Owner GA Councillor Oscar Valenzuela’s Reply: Thank you very much for your proposal to improve this busy area. I can tell you that with the plans of new school being built opposite to the pharmacy in the near future, the traffic inspectors and road engineers are already working on finding the best solution for both students and residents in the future. So please, bear with us for the time being, we are well aware of the problem and are already working on finding the best solution. Q: Vectalia Hi, whilst on the subject of transport in GA, in particular the new bus company, I have a question about the time table published in the mag. What does the times in the red box mean? Do any buses pass by Don Pablo as with old company. The old timetable had a key to it and so we knew when and where the buses went to and from ,and also they were on time, the other day I wanted to go to the airport which involved a bus from GA to Alicante and then the airport bus from there, the 18.40 bus as per the timetable, from the old pharmacy in GA arrived at 19.10!!! meaning I was pushed for time getting to the airport. I have twice been to the bus station in Santa Pola and asked for a copy of the Santa Pola/Alicante and the airport timetable and twice told they did not have any. Is it possible for you to put questions to the new bus company?

LARGE ITEMS COLLECTIONS on Tuesdays and Thursdays ONLY. Please message this number T: 686 801 323 any day of the week to let them know the name of the street you are leaving your large items on. This would help to make the service more efficient and keep our Gran Alacant nice and tidy. Just a warning that so far the police have been giving out warnings about leaving rubbish around the bins instead of placing it in the bins, but from now on if caught

750 EURO FINES WILL BE HANDED OUT! Not a good start for the new company really, maybe they will get better with time, just like wine !!! In the 18 years I have lived in GA I have always opposed the illegal taxis that operate in GA ,mainly as I was a taxi driver in England and so, as with the Spanish drivers, would not be happy if a rouge driver took away my livelihood and means of supporting my family, but with such an erratic public transport service and taxi service,re my last email, I can understand why people use them. Many thanks, Michael Q: Rubbish and Vectalia Whilst the new councillor has good intentions is it just the same old assurances that are sadly never delivered on. The bins area around the CC are an absolute disgrace and a health hazard, it would require minimal effort by urbaser

and the council to maintain these areas so why aren’t they doing it months later? We regularly take the bus to different places, but since Vectalia took over it is chaos, the timetables are misleading and not accurate, what is displayed on the bus stop again is useless as is the printed version in the GA Mag. How difficult can it be to get it right? Many buses run empty simply because passengers didn’t realise it was coming. Maybe the intention is to run the service so badly it makes no money so ceases to be viable, leaving Vectalia with the profitable routes. Regards Nicki Q: Vectalia Hi, have just read the last comment from Nicky regarding Vectalia. I didn´t have time in August to write about them but I can 100 % agree on everything Nicky wrote, plus I also remember a number

350â‚Ź donated to Red Cross Santa Pola and would like to thank to all their customers! of incidents in May, July and August. The first one was in May after the bus stopped outside Life Resort. An old woman tried to leave the bus very slowly through the back door. The bus driver did NOT look in his mirrors before leaving the bus stop and the woman fell on the footsteps. The driver stopped after 2 meters because people told him that something is wrong! I asked the old woman if I should call the police but she was in shock and said no thanks. The bus next day did not follow the route (as I wrote to you before), sitting on Carabasi Playa and see the bus turning left after coming from the hill was very annoying. The bus drivers working for Vectalia, think the are F1 drivers. (Please note that I have a driver license for buses and very heavy trucks !!) The drivers do NOT respect the passengers at all. The drivers hate their customers and the worst thing is that they show it with comments and gestures. We don´t use the bus service any longer after all this mess. The tourist train is not that fast but the drivers are friendly. We have also start to

rent a car now because we feel very bad using Vectalia. My recommendation to Oscar is to send out someone from his team a couple of days traveling with Vectalia Buses. My last question is: THERE must be a authority in Spain who is overlooking the public transportation companies where Oscar can report to if something is going totally wrong. PS I think the number of passengers in August shrank a lot because of the bad service provided by Vectalia. Kind Regards, Lasse GA Advertiser reply: We have forwarded all your feedback to Vectalia, sadly still awaiting their reply. We discussed the situation with Oscar at our last meeting. Oscar told us that transportation is one of top 3 priorities to be improved in GA and he closely works with Vectalia. In the summer months, additional Urbano bus was introduced to provide faster service around GA with waiting time between buses cut down to 20 minutes instead of usual 40 minutes.

Oscar has a meeting planned with Vectalia for the end of September, by which time our October issue will have gone to print, so we should have more information for you in our November issue. However, the main points to discuss on his agenda are Urbano bus - ideally he would like to keep the frequency of Urbano bus every 20 minutes even during the winter months. In addition to increased frequency, he will be discussing possibility of additional bus stops. And finally, he will discuss the issues mentioned in your emails, such as buses running late, lack of timetables and unfriendly behaviour of drivers!

by 09.30 on the Tuesday morning the truck stopped by the bins and collected the said items. Result! Hopefully, more people will use this service and help to minimise the amount of time large items are left lying around the town. Being specific about the location of your bins and items helps so the trucks can be efficient in the route they take. Regards, Graham Turner Q: Nothing Changes Hi Lou and Ged, Having come back to Gran Alacant after a year's absence, Chris and I were dismayed, but not surprised to see the usual piles of

We all hope to see improvement soon! Q: Rubbish Collection Hello, having recently bought a holiday home in GA and having read through a few back issues when we have been over during the past few months through the purchase process I thought I would drop you a line for the next issue regarding a common theme I have read lately‌.Rubbish.

rubbish blocking pavements and drains in Av. Polonia, the threat of hefty fines isn't deterring the lazy morons who do this! Kind Regards, Chris & Penny

My wife and I have recently bought a holiday home in the Altomar II complex in GA and needed to replace and dispose of some of the larger items that were in the apartment. Having read some of your recent publications and in particular the issue people were having with large items being collected (or not!!) I thought it appropriate to let you know of our experience. Having read that there was a new system in place where you could send a message to the Town Hall and inform them of the nature and location of your items we decided to give it a go.

Q: Prejudice against holiday makers Dear Lou and Ged,

The message was sent on a Sunday to the number on the stickers saying that I would leave the items near the bins in the parking area of the market in GA to which I got an instant automated reply thanking me for my message and that my query would be dealt with. I put the items out by the bins late on the Monday evening in readiness for a Tuesday collection, and waited to see what happened the next day. I didn’t have to wait long to find out the result as

There were two letters in the September issue which, in my view, confirms this prejudice.

Myself and my wife have had our house in Gran Alacant for 17 years. We do not live here but visit the area as much as we can. When we visit the area we always try to pick up a copy of your magazine and enjoy reading the letters. I do, however, feel sometimes the letters reveal a negative attitude that permanent residents have against people like ourselves, who don't live here all the time, and holiday makers.

The first was from Michelle about rubbish. She describes how she found dumped rubbish and immediately assumed this was dumped by holiday makers. The second was about mattresses dumped by the bins. Again an assumption is made that these mattresses were dumped by house owners

the Resort by Jose Gonzalez representing the Association of Users and Residents.

Neither have any proof whatsoever that this rubbish was dumped by holiday makers and/or owners who do not live here permanently. I'm surprised that you printed these letters.

We are in our third year of living on the Resort, not only are we very happy living here, but we have never heard of the Association of Users and Residents before.

As I've already said we come throughout the year and have been here in November through to February. Every time we come here, even out of season, we see rubbish dumped by the bins. Clearly not dumped by holiday makers. Can I take this opportunity to remind permanent residence that without the influx of tourists, however inconvenient you may find this, half the bars and restaurants, that you enjoy all year, would probably have to close. Just be happy that for a couple of months a year more people come to enjoy this beautiful area. Andy Q: Santara Resort Dear Lou and Ged My wife and I were surprised to read the article/letter regarding complaints about

We are aware of a small group of residents and former residents who have always refused to pay their Community Charge, electricity and water bills. In 2013 the Resort published figures showing this group owed 150,000 Euros, this has now risen to 300,000 Euros. In the publicity that was put out when the Resort opened there was no reference to Free Medical Care. Nevertheless, there is a state of the art Medical Centre with professional staff. Harry Dobson, a resident for 10 years who is 90 in December, together with his partner Rowena enjoy life on the Resort, with Harry using the on-site Spa most days. Lynne and Colin Armitage were the third family to move onto the Santara Resort. Lynne lost her husband last year and decided to continue living in Spain and at the Resort. Lynne believes the 24 hour security provided is a great asset.

Well, that is it. Summer is over. Nearly all of the holidaymakers have disappeared and the kids are all back in school. The urbanisation is now back to normal and life settles down. Bliss! xxxxxxxxxx STORM PLUS PICTURES Mayhem here on Gran Alacant in the early hours of Wednesday 21stAugust. After weeks of sunshine a storm broke. Pictures of one street in particular where cars were lifted from the force of the water, causing them to hit one another. One of them then brought down the wall of a house.

xxxxxxxx ANOTHER STORM That is two storms in the month of August. This time it started at around 11pm on the evening of August 26th. This one rumbled on for most of the night, but next morning, as usual, the sun was out and the sky was blue……….but……by 2pm another storm rumbled in. And then .... September 13 we were all warned of a massive Gotta Fria due to hit the area. Boy did they do the correct thing in closing all of the schools in the area along with all of the sports centres, all due to safety reasons. Even our farmacia closed for a day for the first time in 11 years. The airport was flooded and flights were cancelled or diverted. It is difficult to put into words how devastating the storm was. It seemed to go on forever.

Local Police of Santa Pola continues to work on the investigation and the causes of the accident that caused damage to the 27

Although it was horrendous for us to go through, surrounding villages had much more serious problems when two rivers burst their banks. Many were evacuated from the homes and indeed one person we know, has had his house swept away and now becomes homeless. The town hall and the local police of Santa Pola called for a collaboration of citizens, to congregate at the police station with 4x4 high vehicles to help in the rescue situations.

Blasco and from this City Hall after the spontaneous and highly praiseworthy request by the agents of the Local Police who have organized and voluntarily requested the relevant permission to be able to authorize a move for several members of the Santa Pola Local Police to travel to those neighbouring towns that are calling for urgent help to carry out the work entrusted to them by the local authorities who need assistance. All a gesture by the Local Police of Santa Pola that great professionalism always watching over the interests of citizens, either in Santa Pola or as now happens in any of the municipalities of Vega Baja. xxxxxxxxx JOKE PICTURES Could not resist sharing these pictures posted on the internet.

Social media was alive with movie shots, with helicopters winching people from their homes and as many people as possible helping those in need. It is estimated that the damage across Vega Baja to be in region of 170 billion Euro’s and 100% of vegetable harvest is lost! Much of the Costa Blanca is a disaster zone, and as yet, we have heard of no financial help from other countries. A statement from our Santa Pola Town Hall roughly translated... After the serious moments that we experienced last Thursday and of which we are already slowly recovering with the very important help of citizens and human and material troops from other neighbouring local administrations the situation is still extremely serious and that just as we thank the voluntary collaboration of those who were willing to provide it, we are now under the obligation of those who with our available troops help and be supportive to those neighbouring municipalities that need it most.

xxxxxxxxx THEFT Please please be careful at the Gran Alacant cash machines. A friend of ours was at a machine obtaining cash, when a man reached over, cancelled her card, put in his own orange card and went off. She chased after him to no avail and went for help from the bank and police. A Spanish lady helped her to cancel her card, but in this short time the thief had cashed 500 euro from her account. The bank would not refund her money, saying that it was not fraud. xxxxxxxxxx 100TH CELEBRATION !!! The one and only GRAN ALACANT OLDIES WALKING FOOTBALL CLUB celebrated their 100thweekly session on 29th August.

********** MOSQUITOS Great work of our councillors who take action to the possible proliferation of mosquitoes in the neighbourhood of Gran Alacant, great beach, Lisa Beach, tamarit, xiprerets, punta de la Sierra and different areas of the population.

The day after the 100th session we had a get together at Lounged (one of our sponsors), where Joan laid on a wonderful buffet for us all, and Lou kept everyone well supplied with drinks, so a big thanks to them both. Around 20 players and families joined and were also entertained in the square by live music. Lots of drinks, lots of food and lots of chat among wonderful friends which players and family have now become. A big thank you to the players, who keep turning up every week to make our club the great success that it has become.

RICHARD & LIESL Back to the storm and a sorry end to my news. Richard and Liesl Cavender have been advertising as Bluemoon Solutions & Spanish Ink, with this magazine for many many years. The only way we can help them is through this magazine. Richard has always been a big help with our business, with his computer knowledge, right from its early days. He has helped Lou & Ged to build the new website and the business directory etc .. .and has always been an avid supporter of our magazine.... Their home was near to a river during the terrible storms, and the river burst it’s banks. Their house, all belongings and Liesl’s car, were destroyed during the storm. They are left with nothing. Both of their businesses were worked from home, so all of this has gone too. Fund raising is taking place to try to help them. If you can help please go to this

website. Hopefully we all can in the future call Richard out to our computer problems to help him build up his business again. www.gofundme.com/f/getting-rich-andliesl-back-on-their-feet As there are far too many pictures to print showing the devastation in our area, I have shared many of them on my facebook page at: www.facebook.com/barry.lane.186 Please note Gran Alacant Councillor Oscar Pedro Valenzuela has a meeting with presidents of all communities scheduled for mid-October. If you have a problem on your community, which you would like to resolve please make the president of your community aware before this date in order to discuss with Oscar. Thank you

MONTEMAR BOWLS & SOCIAL CLUB SUNSET LEAGUE The eight week Sunset League was so popular it was decided to extended it for a further four weeks. Play was from 5.30pm until 7.30pm and then we all adjourned to the square opposite the club for a few drinks and eats. As before it was based on an individual's performance over the four weeks and the winner for the ladies was Pauline Merry for the men Phil Goble and the booby prize winner was Ian Hamilton. They all received a bottle of wine which was provided by Graham Smythe. MONTHLY CHICKEN RUN The August chicken run was played on a very hot Sunday morning. Once again it was decided to play two games of seven ends instead of the normal two games of nine ends. Twenty four members took part a further six members paid their euro but

didn't play. Tanya won the chicken for the ladies and Dave Melville won for the men. The eggs were won by Linda Saunders for the ladies and Peter Morley for the men. Thank you to Jack and Tanya who donated the chickens and Ian and Julia Hamilton who donated the eggs. GRAN ALACANT MIXED RINKS For the second year running the weather intervened and we lost one day of our Annual three day event. Unfortunately this year, we also had a reduced number of teams due to travelling difficulties caused by the severe weather. The rest of the teams mustered on day two and we got through the largest part of the group stages.

We also had a very successful cake stall with lots of lovely cakes and savouries baked and donated by club members. Moving on to day three, on Monday 16th September

WHAT IS ARTHROSIS?

The joints are the components of the skeleton that allow the connection between two bones (such as the elbow, the knee, the hip, etc.) and, therefore, the movement. The cartilage is the tissue responsible for covering the ends of these bones and is essential for the proper functioning of the joint that acts as a shock absorber. Osteoarthritis causes deterioration of the articular cartilage causing the bones start to rubbing against each other and the pain appears. JOINTS AFFECTED BY OSTEOARTHRITIS Osteoarthritis of the spine or spinal column it is frequent, either cervical or lumbar spine. Osteoarthritis of the knee it is more frequent than osteoarthritis of the hip. Hips: Osteoarthritis of the hip is very disabling. Hand: The most affected joints are the small joints of the fingers and the joint located at the base of the thumb. CAUSES Today, the causes why osteoarthritis occurs is unknown, but there are some risk factors associated with its appearance: • Age: The risk potentially increase at the age of 50.

24

• Sex: Mainly affects women over 50-55 years. • Genetics: It can be a inheritance disease. • Work activity: Repeated movements may lead to join overload in the long terms. Therefore, certain work activities (hairdressers, masons, etc.), can cause osteoarthritis. • High physical activity: Elite athletes have a high risk of developing the disease. • Menopause • Obesity: It does not seem to participate in the development of osteoarthritis, but it can be aggravate it in certain joints such as the knees. • Trauma: fractures and injuries can be a trigger. HOW IS ARTHROSIS MANIFESTED? Pain: Pains are the first apparent sign of the disease. It appears when making efforts and with movements. In case of osteoarthritis of the knee or hip you may feel pain during the night when moving or even, sometimes completely still.

PLAZA MAYOR

The pains in case of osteoarthritis of the hip is almost always felt in the groin and thigh and sometimes in the entire face of the thigh from behind in the buttock or even, only in the knee. Rigidity The pains in the morning are almost always accompanied by an impression of stiffness. Functional difficulty It is the discomfort you feel during certain activities. Osteoarthritis of the hip or knee causes walking difficulties with limitations defines by the maximum distance you can walk. DIAGNOSIS X-ray are useful for diagnosis, which show a decrease in cartilage size, that is, the space that separates two bone limbs Other tests that can be used in exceptional cases are the scanner or MRI in some cases. TREATMENT The therapeutic possibilities are numerous. Several are used depending on the state of the disease, the existence or not of inflammatory signs that testify an access, the number of joints affected and the general condition of the patient. Analgesics or “Pain killers” are medicines that act to suppress pain, those used in osteoarthritis are based on paracetamol. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen, naproxen, dexketoprofen and others are useful at the moment of pain and inflammatory access. Medications that protect cartilage Among them we find drugs such as chondroitin sulfate, glucosamine sulfate and hyaluronic acid. Corticosteroid infiltrations consist of injecting an anti-inflammatory product derived from cortisone into a joint. They are recommended when there is an attack of osteoarthritis with inflammation of joint. They produce relief of symptoms for a long period of time.

It is proposed in case of osteoarthritis of the knee with chronic or recurrent pain and effusion. Surgical treatments Joint prostheses: The interventions commonly performed consist of placing a joint prosthesis on the hip or knee. In advanced cases. FORECAST Although this disease is not very serious, it does significantly decrease of patient quality of life, In fact, its prognosis differs quite a lot depending on the joint that is affected and the evolution of the pathology. Many specialties are involved in the evaluation of a patient with osteoarthritis, first of all it is the general practitioner or family doctor who assesses the patient, and if necessary sends evidence and refer for an evaluation with the specialist, either a rheumatologist, as well as a traumatologist who treats osteoarthritis. Also the collaboration of other specialists, physiotherapist, nurse. In Gran Alacant Family doctors we have a group of specialists trained to treat your joint problems, if you need it, come and meet us, it will be a pleasure to assist you.

Anti-aging from within Hi all, welcome to October, this month I want to talk to you all about ageing.

growing up! Ageing comes from within, so if you really want to stay youthful until you are 100 then look within. Learn to respect and appreciate the skin you are in for a longer, healthier, happier you! The process of ageing is the breakdown of key biological functions of our mind and body, which is directly related to our environment, diet, lifestyle and our outlook on life.

We all grow older, if we are privileged enough to do so, and while I know this may be a little controversial for some, but today there are just so many people worrying about the ageing on their faces and spending thousands of pounds a year to “look” younger….yes we all like to make the best of ourselves but vanity is coming at a huge price these days and so many people are being sucked into the madness…natural is definitely nicer in my honest opinion. Yes, it makes the person feel better about themselves “temporarily” but where does it stop, we just need to look at Katie Price these days to know that poor soul needs help. It is a bit disturbing and putting too much pressure on our youth

I have clients that I will often hear saying (and I am often correcting them!) “age doesn’t come by itself” or “well considering my age I feel lucky I only have arthritis, or high blood pressure and cholesterol” Don’t underestimate the extent to which your thoughts and stress levels can affect both your general health and the rate at which you age. So slowing the process down from the inside can start with the diet- cutting down on sugar, which triggers an inflammatory response in the body, which in turn contributes to heart disease and strokes and it also ages the skin as much as smoking and sunbathing. Burn it off during exercise or it will convert to fat in the body, therefore cut down on bread, cakes, biscuits, pastries, sweets and concentrated fruit juices.

OCTOBER SPECIAL OFFER:

Reduce your intake of full-fat dairy products and choose organic in your vegetables, fruit and meat intake. Add more linseeds, they are a good source of omega 3 and great for helping protect breasts and prostate. Use over cereals or smoothies. Use olive oil or coconut oil whist cooking. Papaya, Pomegranate or/and blueberries are ‘super’ fruits which taken daily can help aid digestion and prevent a lot of ageing ailments. Turmeric/ Curcumin- eat more curries, this is a highly anti-ageing spice, also great for inflammation. Take a good quality multi-vitamin for your age and gender. Omega 3 is vital for the brain and nervous system and choose a good Co-enzyme (CoQ10) excellent for cell growth.

85% of the things we worry about never happen. Instead of worrying concentrate on what you can change instead of what you can’t. But don’t go full circle and change your looks - this epidemic is off the scale enough. Stop smoking - every cigarette you smoke can take 15 minutes off your life. Along with the multitude of health concerns related with this habit, it also ages the skin dramatically…and its easier than you think to just stop!! Take regular exercise- however big or smalljust keep moving! Learn to meditate - breathing properly is amazing for the inside of the body. Get plenty of sleep- aim for 8 hours Don’t overeat and don’t over drink. Address your balance for a happier, healthier you!!

Collagen is a vital component for healthy joints, skin, hair, nails, ligaments, cartilage and tendons. Essential oils are amazing for the ageing skin- get yourself a good quality grade bottle of Frankincense oil- a cheap tub of basic cold cream (paraben free preferably) and add 20 Oliver is around 2 years old and is chipped, vaccinated and neutered. He is only a small boy and isn’t keen on other dogs but is great with adults and children drops into the tub, there you will have the best anti-wrinkle cream. Frankincense ‘the king of oils’ is the best for skin cell regeneration.

And lastly the outlook! People who have a positive outlook on life tend to live the longest. Find the balance with work/life, do something you love for a living and also have fun enjoying life and laugh a lot. Animals as Teachers By Jemma “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged in the way in which it treats its animals”. Gandhi

Where there is a will there is a way ... This month has seen the worst storms for a very long time in Spain, and my dominating thoughts and prayers have been for the dogs, horses, all the animals, and of course farmers who have lost all their crops and many their homes and belongings. It is heart breaking. Up to now over 750 animals have lost their lives in the Dolores and surrounding areas. I am harshly reminded how quickly life can change. Having missed the awful storms as I was in the UK, I was completely unprepared when I went to visit the kennels at Dolores on 20th September, one full week after . What I saw as I attempted to reach the kennels by car and by foot, literally brought tears to my eyes . The kennels were still completely water logged .The road where we walk the dogs was like some ancient causeway just barely rising up from vast lakes either side. 4 wheel drives could pass up and down the road but the actual kennels were still not accessible. What lies ahead when the floods finally subside is weeks of hard work to extensively dry out and clean the whole building, rebuilding of weakened stone walls, refurbish and repair what’s left of the actual dog kennels, replacement of electricity and telephone, and then the harrowing job of bringing all the dogs back and resettling them . It’s an arduous task. The floods rose with such ferocity and speed that the actual evacuation was very difficult. Our deep felt thanks go out to Bobbie, George, Christine and John for doing absolutely everything they could. Luckily the dogs were rescued by local volunteers and people who lived within the area so THANK YOU to all those amazing people who saved, we believe, all the dogs, and then with the help of the SAT team

46

were able to find temporary foster homes for them in such horrendous circumstances, and with their own homes and belongings under threat at the same time. Such a generous display of human kindness and positive action that I feel inspired by these people. I do not yet know how many or the names but I endeavour to find out this month. And as to Easyhorescare, which also had horrendous flooding, the poor horses, donkeys and other animals suffered yet another week of standing in water, wet food and all that comes with that. Luckily it has once again managed to pull through as

HIKING WITH HEIDI & OLLI THE PATHS LESS TRAVELED

Biar – Pico Reconco 1209 m Driving Time: 45 mins Walking Time: 3 hours Google maps directions: Santuari de la Mare de Déu de Gràcia, Diseminado Santuario, 2, 03410 Biar

My name is Heidi and I come from Helsinki, Finland. With my husband Olli-Pekka and our 3 dogs we live in Gran Alacant and enjoy the brilliant Mediterranean climate and possibility of discovering new hiking routes all over our Alicante province and sometimes even a bit further.

The route is very well marked and easy to follow. No difficult sections, but you need some strength to go up nearly 500 meters and 11 kilometres. As soon as you start going up, look behind you to experience the lovely looking Biar in the midst of valley between the mountains.

Ironically, I have a fear of heights, but I love the views from tops of the mountains too much to stay away. Our dogs are getting older so all the hikes need to be suitable for them too as they always go on our adventures with us. I also love photography and always take load of pictures from our hikes. The start of the route is right next to the Santuari de la Mare de Déu de Gràcia. There’s a good parking space available with picnic tables and garbage bins. This area is a starting point for many routes. We will be definitely going back to Biar to try another route. With this route you start with PRV 55 up the hill. Some mountain bikers might be coming down this route so be aware of that.

58

When we did this route we drove through dense fog to Biar. I was starting to be desperate that our hike will be done without visibility. But our starting point was already up at 800 meters, so we could see the fog below us creating beautiful landscapes. Once you’ve climbed up the first hill, you will come to an area that is used for parking cars. There’s also a fairly big water tank opposite to you. This spot is where we

return from the peak Reconco and go back the same way. Continue the road with the white and yellow stripes few kilometres having the mountain top on your right side. There will be a fountain font de Soriano about half way of this section. Once you come to the cross paths with a sign “Sender Botànic” continue to follow those signs. This route will take you to the peak Recocnco at 1209 meters. On the route there are few signs telling about the bushes and trees you see on your way. After some more climbing you will reach the asphalt road. Continue up to enjoy the spectacular views over Biar and it’s surroundings from the peak. Then follow the asphalt road back to the parking lot area with the water tank and continue downhill the same path you came up. In the picnic area you can see information about what to see in Biar. So if you are not up for a hike

to the peak, there’s definitely lots to see in Biar. And what better place to start than the beautiful Santuary surroundings. Hope you enjoy this lovely hike, See you next month, Heidi & Olli

CHECK LIST

Always when going on hikes check that: • Your Mobile Phone is fully charged • Water - climbing up is hard job & you will need it • Snacks (Remember to take all the garbage back down with you!) • Have good shoes for walking • Have small first aid kit with you • Have layered clothes. Up hill might be very windy and cold, even on a warm day. Coming down might be chilly, so extra dry t-shirt to change into if needed is not a bad idea • Always tell someone where you are going and when you’ll approx. be coming back

DRAMA IN A TEACUP He smoothly manipulated the controls to bring the device to a stop. It now hovered, completely stationary in the gentle evening breeze. The camera slung under the Drone was a very high definition effort, giving crystal clear images despite the falling light conditions. It was equipped with special night lights and a most sophisticated stabilising system to ensure the steadiest of pictures which he now watched on his control screen. Unlike domestic toy Drones, this professional machine was almost silent and benefited from sensors and detectors that ensured it would avoid coming into accidental contact with trees, wires and other obstacles, thus enabling the operator to concentrate on the task in hand. In his younger days he had played with toy Drones, making them swoop and turn with ease, almost feeling part of the machine while he stood firmly on the ground. The many hours he spent immersed in the games he played on his computer, destroying all before him, and barely recognising the differences between cyberspace and reality, had given him a sharp edge to his personality. His instinct and almost fanatical immersion in the games and Drone flying had given him the eye hand co-ordination skills which now placed him at the top of the list for a Professional Training Course for Drone Operators. Stage one of the course concentrated on his ability to control the larger, more sophisticated devices, his spatial awareness, ensuring that he could recognise where the Drone was in relation to its surroundings and general manoeuvring to bring the device back to land on the pad near his feet. Then there were on-line training lessons detailing the legal and safety issues concerning operating Drones in crowded areas and near Restricted Zones such as airports. It was tedious but, as the pass mark for the examinations was 100%, he gave his undivided attention to the lessons and made the grade. He was now qualified to operate in the Drone in open spaces and away from centres of population.

The scenes on television showing life on the plains of Africa or overviews of the beauty of the countryside were not what he had set his sights on. He was much more interested in life in the places where he could interact with people. Maybe sports events, crowd control, or perhaps helping to find missing people or even chasing round after suspects on the run. Tonight he was close to that. The academic part of the training course had ended with a full discussion on the ethics of using Unmanned Arial Vehicles, or Drones, to seek out and destroy targets of interest to the Authorities. Was it morally acceptable to target someone from the safety of a remote location? The final practical phase of training was now active. The task was to find, identify and shoot five figures that were hidden in an area of houses in a small housing estate. Moving the Drone out of the hover and easing it round the side of a tall stand of trees at the end of a long garden, the first figure came into view. Reactively drawing into the hover again, he studied the image on his control screen. It was exactly as described; partly concealed by a short screen of bushes but unmistakable. Tall, straight and with a small protrusion at the top that looked a bit like a peaked hat. He steadied his breathing and took the shot that captured on camera - The figure 1. All he had to do now was search out the other four figures and take their photographs. He would then be entitled to a full operators’ licence, enabling him to take his Drone into built up areas and housing estates. Although his original objective was to carry out surveillance for missing persons and people on the run, the thought of spending his days discovering the grim and gruesome, had gradually lost its appeal. There was much more money to be made peering into people’s gardens and enclosed areas, locating illegal and undeclared building work or improvements, on behalf of the local council. That would be his career; helping the authorities to bring in the taxes. This is a work of fiction.

GETTING RICH AND LIESL BACK ON THEIR FEET

Richard and Liesl originally lived in Irthlingborough, Northamptonshire and moved to Spain about 12 years ago.

They purchased a property maybe 15 years ago in Gran Alacant (not far from Alicante) as a holiday rental, but loved the Spanish lifestyle so much they then sold up in the UK, quit their jobs, and moved to Spain permanently, subsequently relocating to Almoradi. Richard set up an IT support business, servicing and supplying computers to local businesses, residents and ex-pats. Liesl set up “Spanish Ink” a website selling replacement printer inks and toners throughout Spain. They operate both businesses from home, both built from scratch, whilst also rehoming various stray animals (a particularly rife problem in Spain), with 2 dogs and 5 cats currently.

Richard has helped us to build our Gran Alacant Advertiser website and the new business directory etc ... .and he has always been an avid supporter of our magazine... The only way we can help them is through this magazine. This all started on Thursday evening. Knowing that a huge storm was approaching the south east coast of Spain, they were keeping an eye on the River which runs close by to their home. The River is surrounded by some pretty huge walls that were put up around 30 years ago after a flood. You can see from the picture below that even with the river level higher than normal, there was still maybe 6-8 feet before breaching the walls – everything seemed ok.

Richard and Liesl Cavender have been advertising as Bluemoon Solutions & Spanuish Ink, with this magazine for many many years. Richard has always been a big help with our business, with his computer knowledge, right from its early days.

By Friday morning however the mood had changed and things were looking pretty serious. Incredibly the river was just a few inches from the top of those huge walls. Shortly after the below picture was taken (of a worried looking Richard) they were evacuated from the area, having to leave everything behind except passports and some cash (including leaving behind their 5 rescue cats)

through their street and over where their home used to be.

Later that day, unfortunately a section of the river wall failed leading to a huge rush of water heading towards the town, and their house which would have certainly had a foot or so of flood water flowing through it by this point. The situation was pretty bad, but the cats were presumed safe in the house, and Richard and Liesl just had to ride it out until they could get back to their home and assess the damage.

They are still unable to get anywhere near their home, along with many other residents of Almoradi and other towns since the Police and Army have taken over. All they have is the clothes on their backs and are relying on the generosity of friends, family and complete strangers to get by in the short term. Complete strangers on their way back to the UK from their holiday home in Spain have kindly given them the keys to their property whilst they are away so Rich and Liesl at least have somewhere to stay. The GoFundMe page is generating some income in the short terms to help get them back on their feet, particularly since their only source of income was home based, all of which has been lost. They have literally got to start again from nothing.

On Sunday morning, the situation turned much worse. A further section of river wall closer to their house had now failed, leading to even more flood water crashing into their home, washing away everything with it, including the 5 rescue cats who are presumed dead. The following pictures show their house before (highlighted) and as of Sunday showing the failed river to the left of the bridge, the water rushing

Even a small donation could help Richard & Liesl to get back on their feet. And if you can't make a donation, it would be great if you could share the fundraiser to help spread the word. h t t p s : / / w w w. g o f u n d m e . c o m / f / g e tti n g - r ich- a nd- lies l- ba ck - on- t heirfeet?utm_source=customer&utm_ medium=email&utm_campaign=p_ cp+share-sheet

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge

GLOSSY IBIS

I am experiencing some trepidation about returning to Gran Alacant this month – we have not been here since June, and I have seen the pictures on social media of the horrendous deluge which occurred in September. I wonder what sort of condition my house will be in when we arrive, and will we be looking at a hefty bill for repairs? Fortunately, we are on a slope, and I am guessing (hoping?) that most of the water will have drained into the Clot by now. That means that there will be a lot of long-term flooding in the Clot, which may affect iwt quite considerably with the consequent effects on the flora and fauna. Does this cloud have a silver lining? Well, yes, and for one particular species it is excellent news. Here is the Glossy Ibis, and one place where you can usually find them is in flooded fields; when the local farmers irrigate their crops, you can be sure that once they have completed that job a flock of these birds will descend to feed on the flooded area. The improvements in the Clot over the past few years have made the area ideal for breeding Glossy Ibis, and they can be seen here in most months of the year. With the amount of rainfall that fell in September, you can be sure that these

82 82

birds will make the most of it. When I first came here twelve years ago, they were uncommon birds in our area, but a Spanish population explosion has occurred over those years and they are now a regular sight. When you first see them, the impression is of a large all-black bird with a long decurved beak, but seen close-up in good light it reveals stunning colours; deep maroon, emerald, bronze and violet depending on the angle of view. They use their long decurved beak to probe into the water and mud, and feed on a wide range of prey from frogs and snails, to insects and occasionally fish and small snakes and lizards. They usually operate in flocks, and will attract other members of the white heron family to the feast – Great, Little and Cattle Egrets – giving the impression of a gigantic game of chess. A few of these birds do a curious reverse migration, birds ringed as youngsters in Spain in summer can be found in the UK in winter, why they do this is a bit of a mystery but as the Spanish population increases it seems to be happening more frequently. From being a spectacular rarity in the UK, they are now an annual occurrence, and breeding has begun. You can see more photographs of birds from our area by visiting www.marketheridge. smugmug.com See you next month. Mark

SANTA POLA WALKING FOOTBALL As part of the first ever walk football match for Gran Alacant against Lo Crispin (from Algorfa) at El Altet about four years ago I have had a yearning for the sport. It keeps you involved in football at a level you can manage with older bodies. To play on an outside astro turf pitch not only is fulfilling reminding you of the days gone by but does not put the same strain on your body as an inside sports centre basketball court. Hence the need for a regular venue at regular times with regular players. This is where Santa Pola C.F. (Santa Pola football club) comes into the equation. They are making their training facilities available to us every Monday at 9:30am That's venue and times arranged and now it is up to you to become regular players. We are not looking for professional level players but ordinary players who want a bit of competition, a bit of exercise and a lot of fun.

Why not come along and see what it is like....you never know... there is an England walking football team!!!

GRAN ALACANT GOLF SOCIETY Two bits of news this month.

Firstly, the owners of El Plantio have bought Campo de Golf Alicante which has been in financial difficulties for a number of years. We are advised there is much work to do to restore the course to its previous condition but that undertaking has already started. From a golfing point of view this is an exciting prospect as, whilst details have yet to be confirmed, we are told that reciprocal arrangements between the sister courses will be available thus widening the reach of our Society.

regular visits throughout the year or a holiday maker in the region. We would love to see you. Please note that on Tuesday 22 and Friday 25 October we are unable to play at El Plantio and any golfer intending to join us on those dates should contact the Society to discuss any alternative arrangements we can make.

Secondly, we decided to refresh our Society golf shirts which were showing signs of continued wear over the last 5 or 6 years. With thanks to Gary Mendel and his team at Kameeleon we now look resplendant in our gleaming white shirts proudly sporting the Society logo. As always new members and/or guests are always welcome, whether a full time resident, someone with your own holiday home for

RED ALERT IN NORWAY

Some Vets in Oslo (Norway), have reported the authorities the deaths of several dogs caused by an unknown disease that kills the animals just after a few days they start showing symptoms. The number of affected dogs, depending of the source, may be between 30 and 100. The mysterious disease has been detected in 14 of the 18 Norwegian counties, and most cases have been reported around Oslo. The disease causes digestive symptoms: violent diarrhoeas with blood, and sometimes vomiting. It affects healthy adults, and so far nobody knows if it’s been caused by viruses, bacteria or toxic substances. The most probable option is the disease is a infectious one, caused by viruses or bacteria. Options such as rat poison are been discarded by the moment. It looks like there is no connection between the different cases (they haven’t been at the same place, they are not relatives, and they didn’t eat the same food). In some necropsies, an abnormal overgrowth of some intestinal bacteria such as Clostridium prefringens or Providencia alcalifaciens has been detected. We are talking about normal intestinal flora which doesn’t produce serious problems normally. By the moment, authorities recommend

precaution. All the canine contests in Norway have been cancelled, and the owners must walk the dogs always on the lead for avoiding direct contact between dogs.

It may look like Norway is too far from our area to threat our dog’s health, but while they investigate the disease in Norway in order to control the situation, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Let us remind you what happened some years ago with Alabama Rot (we wrote about it in this magazine). It started as a mortal disease involving some Greyhounds in US, and some months ago some cases are been reported in the UK and Ireland. The cause keeps unknown. Vets try to be updated about the news which affect animal health via scientific criteria. If you have any kind of doubt, don’t believe fake news or hoaxes at the Internet. Ask the Vet instead.
