Gran Alacant Advertiser continues to bring you all the local NEWS including information from the local Town Hall representative. Working for the local community since January 2005.

If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like to ask our councillors, please email on info@granalacantadvertiser.com

ASK OUR GA COUNCILLORS

Q: Pétanque

Dear sirs, first of all thank you for all involved with the fantastic sport facilities at the Jose Antonio Aleman sports centre. My query is that the Pétanque courts could do with upgrading. It may only need sand. At the moment it is mostly just concrete. Then the families in Gran Alacant can enjoy playing this simple game.

Thank you, Jim & Kath

A: GA Advertiser

We have forwarded your request to our councillors and hope to see improvements soon. Please keep us updated.

Q: Toilet

Hi Lou, can it be checked with the councillors and/or Urbaser what the situation is with waste left by the bins please? Walking around Gran Alacant, people leave rubbish outside of the bins, which is bad enough, but then the rubbish is just left there… this toilet has been outside the bin for at least 3 weeks… Thank you, Andy

Update from Andy:

Hi Lou, thank you for reporting the issue. The toilet has been removed the next day and the area around the bins has been cleaned up.

Borja

Hi Lou, these photos earlier today from the garden recycling centre up opposite the El Faro Urbanisation. Never seen it as bad as this. Maybe you can ask what is going on.

Many thanks, John

A: GA Advertiser

We have informed the councillor of cleaning.

Q: Recycling centre:

Q: Tourist Train - new stop by Aldi

Do you know how to contact the train company, or maybe Borja Merino can help? Many people would like another stop adding between the Carabassi bars and the Masa Office stop along Av.Noruega, maybe near Aldi would be good.

I'm told that it does stop at Aldi when the market is on so would be grateful if this was a permanent addition now that there are so many more residents living along this route. Thank you, Angela

A: Borja Merino

We asked the train company and the train will make a stop by Aldi.

Q: Mirror

Hello Lou. A question for Borja Merino please. "Is it possible to erect a mirror on Avda Finlandia opposite the exit from the Lidl carpark?" The proximity of the bins to the exit restricts the view to the left and it is difficult to see oncoming traffic. Thank you, Geoff

A: Borja Merino

I’ve sent your information to the council for traffic police to check the situation and resolve.

Q: Urbano Bus

Hi Lou, on the 30th August Vectalia emailed their 'Winter' timetable for the No.15 Urbano circular bus to come into effect 2 days later on Monday 2nd September.

This timetable replaced the Summer Timetable which had only been in place since 1st July. The Summer timetable was the first time, I have been told, that these operating times had returned since preCovid. The 'Winter' timetable has now

taken us back to no buses after 13:20 on Monday - Friday and no buses after 14:00 on Saturdays and no bus at all on a Sunday.

Some of us have emailed Vectalia to complain about the service but have been told that "all aspects related to the essential parameters of the lines, such as timetables, stops, frequencies and routes, are determined by the competent authority in matters of transport" the competent authority being Santa Pola townhall?

Could you please ask our councillors to put some pressure onto Vectalia to provide a decent bus service in Gran Alacant. The number of permanent residents has grown since pre-Covid and residents, workers and visitors need a bus service that runs into the evening Monday - Saturday. Many thanks, Angela

A: GA Advertiser

We made our councillors aware of this problem and hope to see extended bus time table soon.

URBASER INTRODUCES NEW SIDELOADING COLLECTION TRUCKS

Five modern side-loading trucks, adapted to the new containers installed throughout Santa Pola, have entered into service.

Councilor for Cleaning, Encarni Ramírez, oversaw the launch of the five new stateof-the-art side-loading collection trucks, which have been added to the vehicle fleet by Urbaser, the company responsible for the municipal solid waste collection service.

These trucks are equipped with compacting collection bins with a capacity of 26m³ of solid waste and are specifically designed for the side-loading of the new containers. These containers have been renewed across the municipality under a new 10year contract awarded by the City Council to Urbaser.

In addition, the trucks are fitted with engines that comply with the European Euro 6 standard, which requires the incorporation of advanced technologies to significantly reduce pollutants.

SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION AND RENOVATION PLANS

The mayor met with the Director General of Educational Infrastructure and the delegate of the Consell in Alicante to advance the projects for all schools and high schools included in the Plan Edificant.

The Director General of Educational Infrastructure from the Department of Education, José María Larena, and the delegate of the Consell in Alicante, Agustina Esteve, visited the Santa Pola City Hall to meet with Mayor Loreto Serrano, the Councilor for Education, Óscar Valenzuela, the Councilor for Infrastructure,

Trini Ortiz, and municipal technicians. During the meeting, all the ongoing issues that Santa Pola has under the Generalitat Valenciana's Plan Edificant were discussed.

This is a collaborative program between the regional government and local municipalities aimed at developing new actions related to educational infrastructure, impacting all schools and high schools in the area, both in the construction of new facilities and the remodeling of existing ones.

One of the key topics emphasised was the request for an increased budget to resume construction of the new Hispanidad School. The bidding process for this project, with an estimated cost of 5,355,583 euros, was unsuccessful as no companies submitted offers in response to the tender put forward by the Santa Pola City Council.

ÓSCAR MEETS WITH EDUCATION INSPECTOR AND HEADS OF SANTA POLA HIGH SCHOOLS

The municipal Secondary Education council was held to coordinate student enrollment, and an update was provided to school leaders on the progress of all actions requested in the Plan Edificant.

Óscar Valenzuela, Councilor for Education, met with the Secondary Education Inspector and the principals of the various high schools in Santa Pola to discuss enrollment for the 2024/25 school year and to hold the first meeting of the year on the Education Master Plan.

Updates included "the second modular phase of the Gran Alacant high school, whose expansion is fully completed and

ready to start for the school year, as well as the basic project we now have for the construction of the permanent Gran Alacant high school."

In the coming weeks, the Councilor for Education will continue holding meetings with primary schools and parent-teacher associations (AMPAs) to update them on all the latest developments.

SANTA POLA PRESENTS ITS NEEDS TO THE GENERALITAT VALENCIANA

Santa Pola hosted the Generalitat Valenciana's first Consell meeting of the new political term, welcoming President Carlos Mazón and his team despite a heavy storm that delayed the meeting. Mayor Loreto Serrano praised the consellers' accessibility, which allowed for fruitful discussions on key local issues. Topics included school improvements, healthcare, fishing, and infrastructure.

Serrano emphasized the success of this historic meeting and the valuable connections made, especially during the town's celebrations, adding, "Last year, the president couldn't attend despite having been the town crier, but this year he didn't want to miss them. He told us how emotionally significant Santa Pola and its celebrations are to him, as he has felt deeply connected with us ever since."

ELCHE TEEN ATHLETE IS PROCLAIMED RUNNER-UP IN THE SUP WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

Alexia Soto, an athlete from Elche, has been proclaimed runner-up in the SUP (stand up paddle boarding) world championship that took place in Denmark in September. The Elche native, who is only 17 years old, has won the silver medal in the junior category.

The SUP World Championships started with the traditional 'sand ceremony'. Alexia Soto came to the event with sand from the beach of Los Arenales del Sol, where she lives, so Elche has been present in Denmark. Each athlete puts the sand they have brought from their country of origin into an urn.

Soto showed great skill and achieved a highly commendable second place. A week ago, in an interview on 'Radiosestadio Elche' , she already warned that she was going "for everything".

Alexia is an athlete at the Parres Sports Club, so the silver medal is a great success for the club and her teammates. When she returns to Elche, she is expected to be recognised by the City Council.

THE SECRETS OF A HAPPY MARRIAGE

AN INTERVEW WITH NORMA & FRED

After recently celebrating their 60th wedding anniversay, Norma and Fred share their favourite moments with us. Norma works for the Local Government Authority and Fred has been a long distance lorry driver working for Lyons Tetley for over 40 years.

WHERE ARE YOU BOTH FROM?

We have lived in Greenford West London all our lives and brought up our 3 children there. We are still living there today.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN LIVING/ VISITING GA?

We have enjoyed our 2nd home in GA since 2002 visiting 4-5 times a year for long periods until Brexit where we are now restricted.

HOW MANY YEARS HAVE YOU BEEN MARRIED?

Although we've been married for 60 years we have known one and other for 65.

WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT YOUR RELATIONSHIP?

The best thing about our relationship is knowing we are there for each other.

TELL ME WHAT YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT EACH OTHER?

The thing I love about Fred is the way he cares for me and his daily silly jokes that always makes me laugh.

HAVE YOU HAD ANY TOUGH TIMES AND IF SO HOW DID YOU GET THROUGH THEM?

We have had many tough times throughout our married life but we've talked them through and solved them together never pushing them under the carpet

WHAT’S YOUR TOP TIP FOR A HAPPY MARRIAGE?

Our tip for a happy marriage is consideration sharing and showing affection. Never go

to bed on an argument because you may never know what tomorrow may bring.

DESCRIBE YOUR FIRST DATE

We first met on a blind date making up a foursome with our friends going to the local cinema (not in the back row!)

TELL US ABOUT YOUR WEDDING DAY

We were married at our local Catholic Church on 12th September 1964 where 100 guests attended our wedding. It was a lovely sunny day and everything went to according plan.

BEST GIFT YOU RECEIVED FROM EACH OTHER AND WHY?

My best gift from Fred was a 50th birthday surprise. A trip on Concorde to New York staying at the Walford Astoria Hotel sailing back to the UK on the QE2 and taking the Orient Express into London.

Book of the month by Beth

A great holiday read My Recommended Book of the Month Private

Former US Marine Jack Morgan runs Private, a renowned investigative company with branches around the globe. It is where you go when you need maximum force and maximum discretion. Jack has access to the secrets of the most influential men and women on the planet- and his staff of investigators use the world’s most advanced forensic tools to make and break their cases.

In LA, Jack is already deep into the investigation of a multimillion gambling scandal and the unsolved slaying of 18 schoolgirls when he learns of a horrific murder close to home. His best friend’s wife, Jack’s former lover, has been killed. Jack devotes all of private’s resources to tracking down her killer and Jack does not have to play by the rules.

I have not read James Patterson for years and came across this new (to me) series and this is the first of 20 books about Jack Morgan and Private. In this first book of the series he is joint author with Maxine Paetro. I enjoyed it and will be reading more. Maybe some of you have not come across this series either.

Beth worked as a Qualified Librarian in Aberdeen for 20 years. She loves reading and delights in finding exciting new authors as well as reverting back to favourite writers of all genres. Beth has lived in Gran Alacant for the last 15 years.

Introducing

ADVOCATING RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERSHIP IN SANTA POLA AND GRAN ALACANT

We are ASPETGA, the pet owners association of Santa Pola and Gran Alacant, dedicated to fostering responsible pet ownership in Santa Pola and Gran Alacant. Founded as a non-profit organization by a group of passionate neighbors, including a local veterinarian, ASPETGA focuses on promoting awareness of local regulations, with a particular emphasis on waste collection. Our mission is to facilitate peaceful coexistence between pet owners and the community, advocating for specially designated spaces for pets, such as dog parks and beaches.

For over a decade, ASPETGA has been tirelessly working towards the well-being of our furry companions. During this time, we’ve actively supported vulnerable families by assisting with the feeding and veterinary care expenses of their beloved pets.

Notable among our achievements is the creation of the Gran Alacant dog park, recognized as one of the best in the province, alongside the Santa Pola dog park and La Caleta dels Gossets, the Santa Pola dog beach.

Beyond these initiatives, we organize engaging events for dogs and families

alike, including Canine Halloween, Santa Claus for Dogs, and socialisation days.

In collaboration with the Santa Pola city council, we spearhead civic campaigns to raise awareness among dog owners about responsible waste disposal. Our motto, “I am responsible, I clean up,” underscores our commitment to fostering a clean and safe environment for all.

In 2015, we established the Pet Food Bank to support the most vulnerable families in Santa Pola and Gran Alacant. Through collaboration with the Santa Pola Red Cross and Social Services, we provide essential nutrition and, when resources permit, assist with veterinary expenses.

Understanding that economic pressures contribute to pet abandonment, we strive to keep families and their pets together by offering assistance. ASPETGA relies entirely on volunteer efforts and funding derived from donations, raffles, sales at markets, and charitable events – not a penny from government or public sources.

Since 2015, we’ve distributed over 10,000 kilograms of pet food, as well as, when

funds permitted, extended financial aid for veterinary bills when needy families face difficulties covering costs due to illness or injury.

In times of crisis, ASPETGA extends its reach beyond local borders. During the early days of the war in Ukraine, we collaborated with 50 other animal charities to collect and send aid. Our community’s support and the generosity of local veterinary clinics made this initiative possible.

Two years ago, we expanded our support to authorized feral cat colony managers, recognizing their vital role in controlling the health and population of stray cats.

None of this would be possible without the ongoing support of neighbors like you. Fundraising events, such as those held at Tommy’s, play a crucial role in sustaining our mission. Thank you!

We used to live in London. Juan grew up in Villena (Alicante), lived and worked in the UK for almost 20 years. Archie was born in Sussex, grew up in Surrey and lived and worked in London for 30 years. We have both been working from home for quite some time and a few years ago decided to invest in a property in the Alicante region to spend more time in sunny Spain near Juan’s family.

We discovered Gran Alacant, its location surrounded by nature with great sea views and a location between Elche and Alicante near to the airport made us decide to purchase a property here. After many rainy Sundays watching “A house in the Sun”… our own property by the Med became a reality. A couple of years later during the first COVID lockdown and with the Brexit deadline fast approaching we decided to give it a go and try full time life in Spain. It meant Archie could make the transition whilst still a European Union citizen. After our first winter in Spain and despite some Covid restrictions our big decision became a reality and we settled in Gran Alacant.

What made you start writing for GA Advertiser?

Over the years, visiting the Costa Blanca region as holiday makers with Juan’s insights and knowledge of the area made us feel that the Costa Blanca's reputation, particularly in the UK, was not fair: The region is rich in culture and festivals, with diverse nature and a strong and diversified economy. Instead, it was usually portrayed as a place of cheap property and even cheaper alcohol…simply a sun and sand destination. We had always thought of writing an alternative guide to the Costa Blanca.

A few months after our arrival in GA, at one of the Simple Social Hub coworker gatherings Juan was sitting next to Lou, they got chatting about the perception of the area and Lou offered Juan the opportunity to write some articles with this idea in mind:. We happily accepted and 44 articles later we are still going strong with plenty of ideas to still write about!!

You have a great writing style. What are/ were your day jobs?

Thank you, we hope the readers enjoy our thoughts and travels in the region. Archie is a barrister in London practising mostly in housing and property law and Juan has had a long career in luxury hospitality and nowadays works as a business and sustainability consultant for hotel companies with a focus on technology procurement.

We write the Home Turf articles as a team. Juan normally comes up with the subject and the overall message that we want to share. Archie then writes the core of the article and Juan does the fact checking and edits the article to make it as lively as possible for our readers. We then go through our pics and try to choose those that go best with the narrative. It’s a very rewarding process and makes a nice change from our day jobs.

Where did your passion for travel/exploring come from?

We have both always enjoyed travelling, even before we met. Travelling together is just so much fun. Archie loves and understands history whereas Juan is always looking for the next adventure, interesting restaurant or best bar for a cocktail and sunset. We are great travel companions. We also enjoy a somewhat nomadic lifestyle, remain curious about the world and are probably happiest when on the move.

Out of all the places you have visited, where is your favourite place and why?

That’s a really hard question. The world is truly wonderful and we enjoy most things: architecture, culture, nature. We sometimes go on holidays in need of a restful break but what we both enjoy the most is going travelling to explore and discover new things.

Juan was always afraid of driving on the lefthand side in the UK so we now enjoy lots of road trips in Spain. The diversity of cultures, foods, languages and landscapes that Spain has to offer makes it a very unique country.

Over the last 4 years our favourite trip was to Galicia. We stayed in a little peninsula called Ortigueira, the most northest point of the Iberian peninsula. We stayed in a beautiful house by the beach. The sense of isolation and wild nature around us made us fall in love with the area.

Internationally, Archie’s favourite city is Hong Kong and Juan’s is Istanbul. Probably the most fascinating trip we have done together was over 10 years ago when we spent 25 days in Uzbekistan. What an incredible country! We got the opportunity to travel in the Soviet era underground system in Tashkent, visited ancient UNESCO protected cities like Samarkand or Khiva and we also got the chance to see the man made eco-disaster of the receding and soon disappearing Aral Sea. I think it was right there when we both realised that the way humans currently interact with nature is not sustainable and it simply needs to change.

Do you have any essential tips for travellers? It feels as if travelling nowadays has become just one more commodity for mass consumption rather than a special and precious moment in one’s life. We try to find interesting places with a combination of history, architecture and nature but also to savour the experience of moving through landscape and space. More and more we are avoiding ‘the noise’ of modern travel and embracing instead the concept of ‘slow travel’ to really make the most of the journey rather than just ticking off a destination; pilgrims as much as tourists? The Home Turf articles have been great to help us appreciate what is local and we feel very lucky living in this fascinating part of Spain.

As we try to communicate in our articles, try to look but also “see”, don’t judge and try to learn and always leave behind as little footprint as possible.

What kind of accommodation do you tend to stay in? Do you have any funny/strange stories? Juan stays in all types of hotels all the time

for work so when we travel we actually avoid hotels as much as possible. We try to book apartments or homes and try to blend as much as possible with as little impact as possible on the local community. We are now trying house swapping platforms which has proven very successful for both sides.

We have had quite a few funny experiences. Juan has many anecdotes of hotels and celebrities and mad night shifts from his years working in luxury hotels.

In terms of funny experiences when travelling, once during a visit to Rajasthan in India we were forced to stop relying on the Indian public transport and hired a driver to take us around the region. We drove the entire region together for almost 3 weeks. Archie and our new friend Sonu argued every single evening when trying to decide where we would stay that night. Let’s just say that Archie and Sonu’s understanding of a good night's sleep was rather different.

Juan spent the 3 weeks acting as a diplomat making sure we all enjoyed the trip. India is not an easy country for western travellers but it’s a fascinating and stimulating place for all your senses. After three weeks, it was emotional to say goodbye to our friend Sonu, particularly for Archie.

Where would you like to visit and why?

There are many many places we would like to visit but we don’t keep a list or plan too far ahead. When we have the time, we just look at the available options and go. Sometimes we go to places following an invitation from friends or simply visit new destinations curious about an article or piece of news we have seen somewhere. As we write this we are heading to Menorca to meet with some friends who have rented a house there. We are looking forward to understanding the British legacy of this former colony and walking some of the Camí de Cavalls, a walking route that runs through an ancient path of 185 km long that surrounds Menorca following its coast.

THE SECRETS OF A HAPPY MARRIAGE

AN INTERVEW WITH CINDY & COLIN

Celebrating 50 years of marriage, Cindy and Colin take a trip down memory lane and share their favourite moments and tips for a happy marriage. Colin comes from London and Cindy was born in Holmfirth Yorkshire and lived in London from the age of eight.

HOW

LONG HAVE YOU LIVED IN GA?

We have been visiting Gran Alacant since 2001 and have lived here since 2020.

TOP TIPS FOR A HAPPY MARRIAGE

Understanding and respecting our differences. We have a mutual respect for one another and enjoy spending time together and as well as doing things apart.

TELL ME WHAT YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT EACH OTHER

Cindy: I love Colin’s laid-back attitude to life although sometimes it can be a little frustrating.

Colin: I love that Cindy is always there for me.

HAVE YOU HAD ANY TOUGH TIMES AND IF SO HOW DID YOU GET THROUGH THEM?

Like most marriages, there have been difficulties. We overcome our downs by talking through the problem, sorting it out and not bearing grudges.

WHAT DID YOU THINK OF EACH OTHER WHEN YOU FIRST MET?

Cindy: I first met Colin when I went into the pub to invite his best friend to my 18th birthday party. My words were 'you can bring your friend along as well' as I thought he looked all right even though he looked about 14!

Colin: I thought Cindy was very friendly and was happy to be invited to her party.

DESCRIBE YOUR FIRST DATE

Cindy: We went ice-skating in the afternoon followed by a session in the local pub. Colin and his friend challenged me to drink 3 pints of cider in 30 minutes. I accepted and completed the challenge but did not feel too great soon after. Colin took me home to my mother and made a speedy exit!

BEST GIFT YOU RECEIVED FROM EACH OTHER AND WHY

Colin: I was told I was going out for one of my favourite lunches, Moules and frites. The surprise was I was going to Nice to eat it. It was my favourite because it was so unexpected and we had a great lunch.

Cindy: A surprise first class Eurostar trip to Paris. It was my favourite because it was a complete surprise. I was getting ready for work and Colin gave me a travel case and told me to pack it and meet him at Waterloo Station after work. When I arrived, he handed me the tickets.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR WEDDING DAY

We set out planning a small wedding but our parents had other ideas. In the end, we had 9 bridesmaids, 2 flower girls, a pageboy and 200 guests. We were married in the beautiful St Giles Church in Camberwell and after the service they church bells rung a peal to honour the wedding. We had a sit down reception followed by an evening reception with a live band. We would not have changed it at all.

COSTA BLANCA BY SEA

In the almost four years that we have been writing about our travels and adventures we have always stayed on dry land. Finally we decided to turn our attention towards the sea and embark on a trip up the coast by boat. A group of friends invited us to join them on a day out on the water in a hired boat. We all met at the port in Altea bringing with us food and drink for the day.

One of our group holds a licence allowing him to sail a small engined craft so he took the helm with the rest of us in charge of nothing more than dropping the anchor and mixing the drinks!

From Altea we headed north up the coast allowing us to revisit some of the places we have written about in past articles. Leaving port we first passed Altea old town which had hosted the local Eco festival we wrote about in November last year. We then passed Calpe where we were able to see the collection of buildings designed by the late architect Ricardo Bofill which we wrote about in one of our early articles; viewed from the distance afforded by boat one is able to properly appreciate their design and setting along the cliffs.

most expensive villas. The bay of El Portet was crammed with other small craft full of folk equally determined to enjoy a day on the water. The festive atmosphere was enhanced by the “mojito” boats passing by offering freshly mixed cocktails delivered to one’s boat! Eventually, tiring of the jostling party boats and wanting more peace, we turned south and headed to find a quiet place to swim. We have written in previous articles about the magnificent beaches and coves that line our coastline (September 2023) and on our way south we were able to admire the soaring cliffs that frame these beaches. It was quite thrilling to see intrepid souls climbing these sheer cliffs with the waves slapping the rocks below them.

Continuing along the coast we passed beautiful Moraira and finally dropped anchor at glamorous El Portet, a former fishing village that in the last half century has become home to some of Spain’s

Eventually we found a quiet stretch of coast just north of Calpe and dropped anchor once again to swim in the stunning sapphire coloured sea. The intense blue that the water along our coast acquires in summer is perhaps taken for granted by those of us lucky to live here. However, swimming in that sea one understands why the rich perfect blue hue of the Western Mediterranean sea has become such a potent symbol for artists; it is indeed a transcendent experience to be immersed in such colour and light. Swimming offshore from a boat is a different experience from beach bathing; allowing one to fully appreciate the water for its own sake.

Our sail along the coast also provided an opportunity to see the scale of the human development that has occurred since this area was “discovered” in the 1950s. The coastline is now almost entirely built up with a continuous ribbon of buildings stretching right up to the beachline. The former fishing villages and small ports such as Altea and Calpe have become busy towns and almost small cities. Virtually all of this development has been driven by summer tourism, both domestic and international. After seventy years of development the Spanish people appear this year to have finally decided to call a halt to the endless growth of the hospitality business. The demonstrations

now taking place against the social costs of mass tourism echo the warnings that have been made for years about the strain on the physical environment that mass tourism causes. How Spain balances these concerns against the need for economic progress and stability will be a major challenge in the next seventy years, especially in our area and with additional challenges presented by climate change.

We loved the experience so we recommend everyone to try to get out on the water and see our coastline from the sea. Boats can be hired easily either with or without a skipper.

ARTHROPODES, PETS AND EMERGING DISEASES

After all the heatwaves we have suffered last summer, and the heavy rains these last days in Europe, there is no doubt climate change is here to stay. We are, in fact, facing a real climate crisis. Why is it a crisis? Because changes are so sudden and strong that we are unable to get adapted to them. When we say “we”, we mean all alive beings: humans living in temperate climate areas which become suddenly desert areas, animals living in cold areas such as Poles, which get warmer, plants which are unable to grow when their usual environment changes…

Raising temperatures and long distance trips have produced tropical (or typical of warm areas) diseases, are now active in Spain and other European countries. Modern and quick means of transportation have “imported” into Spain tiger mosquito, for example. Species that were able to move only a few meters a year in the past have now colonized Spanish Mediterranean coast in a short time, and due to rising average temperatures, mosquito reproductive season is now longer than ever. Culex mosquito, for example, is the vector of West Nile Fever, which affects humans, birds and equines, and can be potentially lethal.

Mosquitoes may also transmit Dengue Fever, and ticks are the vector of CrimeanCongo haemorrhagic fever. So, all these mortal diseases are transmitted by arthropods which also live on our pets. For this reason, preventing and treating external parasites in our pets become critical, for their health and our health, so the task of Veterinarians is also critical for protecting public health, even against emerging diseases that may become pandemic (as a matter of fact, they haven’t become pandemic yet thanks to Vets task).

Nowadays, there are emerging diseases such as West Nile Fever, Crimean-Congo, epizootic haemorrhagic disease in cows, etc, which may affect both humans and

animals, and some other ones such as African swine fever, which don’t affect people but can be economically catastrophic, and, besides, there is not an effective vaccine. Imagine what would happen if it spreads worldwide farms. Or maybe bird flu, which is killing millions of birds (pelicans, seagulls) everywhere, and is affecting now sea mammals.

Bird flu (H5N1 virus), is starting to affect cats, rats and cows in America. Transmission has happened via the milk, and may affect calves and cats which have licked infected milk. Infection in rats has been proved in lab. According to expert, it would only take the virus two genetic mutations to be able to affect people (and being transmitted directly from human to human). In fact we have read at the papers only a few days ago “first case of bird flu in human whose mechanism of transmission is unknown”).

Considering all these things, what can we do? Of course, the very first thing is to try to not to make things worse, which implies following the Vet’s instructions and keep up to date our pet’s vaccines and antiparasitic treatments, not to feed or adopt wild animals (birds, tortoises), and not to buy importation exotic pets. Of course we don’t mean our children’s hamster or Guinea pig, or that parrot which is at home for 20 years, but those “pets” such as sugar gliders, kangaroos, snakes, prairie dogs, etc. Of course, we know they are our patients. That’s why we mention it.

THE SECRETS OF A LONG LIFE

AN INTERVEW WITH MAE FADDES

Last month 88 year-old Mae Faddes took to the skies for a thrilling paragliding adventure with Nick from Doyouwanna Paragliding. Born on April 3, 1936, in Ardrossan, and currently residing in Ayrshire on Scotland's West Coast, Mae shares her tips with us on living a long, happy life.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN COMING TO GA?

I first came to GA in 1983 and bought a property in Panorama 1986. It is a holiday home and we visit 3 times a year.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE GA?

I originally came here to visit friends and fell in love with the place and the people.

WHAT FOODS DO YOU EAT TO STAY HEALTHY?

Good wholesome Scottish food. Everything in moderation and a brandy for a night cap.

FAVOURITE PLACE IN THE WORLD YOU HAVE VISITED AND WHY?

I have always been a bit of a globetrotter. Each one has been special for different reasons.

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT IN LIFE AND WHY?

Jumping off a cliff with Nick from Doyouwanna, everyone thought l was too old to paraglide and would not do it.

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO PARAGLIDE?

I used to watch the gliders many years ago when my grandsons were young, it looked so peaceful. I wanted to do it on my 60th birthday but it never happened, l decided it was now or never. It was much better than I could ever imagine. Nick was fantastic; he was so considerate of my age

and capabilities. I am looking forward to do it again when I reach 90.

WHAT IS YOUR SECRET TO A HAPPY LIFE?

Treat everyone with love and respect, the way you want to be treated.

Gran Alacant’s ELCHE CF SUPPORTERS GROUP

A group of football fans in Gran Alacant have their own Elche CF supporters club to attend home games at the stadium and watch away games in local bars.

Home games see the group move around different bars in GA, with the usual bars used being Happy’s at the GA Centre while Tommy’s is the regular spot up the hill. The group, primarily made up of 19 season ticket holders who sit together, arranges carsharing to get to the ground in time for some pre-match beers and food before returning to GA afterwards.

A poor start to the season means Elche need to pick up form to escape Segunda - the second division of Spanish football. Hopes are high for another promotion push to get back up to La Liga. Home games in October are against Deportivo La Coruña on 13 Oct at 21:00, Sporting de Gijón on 20 Oct at 18:30, and Burgos at the end of the month.

GA SOCIAL CYCLISTS

There is a vibrant group of social cyclists in Gran Alacant who meet up outside of Molly Malones most days of the week at around 10:00am.

We ride hybrid and off road bikes, are of varying ages, fitness levels and both sexes and usually cycle the rural roads and paths around Gran Alacant, Santa Pola and Elche which means 12 – 25 miles per ride.

Fitter, stronger cyclists can opt to take different routes but, we always meet up at a designated stop for a coffee, and importantly, a natter. Sometimes the group is just two cyclists, whilst other times it can be as many as 10-12 and as a testament to the group, in the years we have been meeting, many strong friendships have been formed.

As we don’t all live in Gran Alacant we communicate via a Whatsapp Group so it is best to check on the Whatsapp group who is around and who is going out on any particular day.

If you want to join us please contact us on Whatsapp: 00353 / 87 991 6020

Following discussions with various parties, we are able to meet each Wednesday at 11am on the outdoor astroturf pitch at the GA Sports Centre. Please arrive around 10.50am to allow for teams to be arranged. Early indications are that this will be a good year with some new members already.

We play each Wednesday on the astroturf at the Polideportivo (Sports Centre) in Gran Alacant. Everyone is welcome regardless of ability or experience. We have members from several countries with players’ ages ranging from early fifties to over 70. PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT!

September saw the return of the Women’s Walking Football Sessions on the Astroturf pitch at the Sports Centre. Many of our members reported that they have been practising their skills over the summer with their enthusiastic (slightly embarrassed) grandchildren! This out of season training was in part preparation for the highly anticipated fundraising match against the Gran Alacant Men’s Walking Football squad on Thursday the 26 th September.

The result of this encounter... (drumroll please) cannot be published at this time due to the fact that, at time of writing this article, the game had not even been played!

However – stay tuned and there will be a full report, including photos, goal scorers (if there are any) and names of anyone who comes to the attention of the referee due to misdemeanours, published in the November edition of this magazine.

Now that summer and the worst of the heat has left us, it’s a great time to consider trying out a new activity/ hobby. If you would like to come along and give Walking Football a try, you will be made most welcome and whats more – the first session is free! Join us every Thursday at 10:20am (for 10:30 start) at the Gran Alacant Sports Centre.

Flora is a happy and healthy cat who is now looking for a loving family and home. Originally brought to the shelter significantly overweight, Flora would fit in well in a home that encourages exercise and play, with space to climb, explore and stretch her paws.

If you would like more information or to meet Flora, please contact: PATRICIA on T:602534374

Our next lunch will be at Skipper Bar for their Buffett on 27th September. On 25th October we will be at Texicana International Restaurant, on the 21st November we are at La Piedra and our Christmas lunch will be on 13th December at James Bar & Grill.
