We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, including that from a representative from the Town Hall, as we have since May 2005.
If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine - granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.co.uk Q: Late night bus to Santa Pola Hi Lou&Ged, We have had a house in GA for about 14years We enjoy Sat evening in Santa Pola. We used to be able to get a last bus back to GA on Saturday at about 12pm it was the last Alicante bus, which returned to Areneles. Unfortunately this bus was withdrawn a few years ago. We can get the Night service in the summer for a short period but not in winter anymore. We wondered if Baile could look at reintroducing the last winter return bus on Saturday to enable us to enjoy Santa Pola on Saturday all year round. This would surely benefit trade in the town Maybe you can help, Kind Regards, Ian& Paula Reply from Baile Bus: We will look into the service and hopefully put a late service on. Q: Santa Pola Hi Lou & Ged, I am a resident of Santa Pola and I wish to comment on some of the recent public works carried out by the Town Hall. Firstly the new traffic system seems to have created a greater number of public safety and traffic problems than were present with the old system. The diverting of a greater volume of traffic into the already congested narrow roads of Santa Pola creates unjustifiable safety problems for pedestrians, cyclists and indeed all road users. Does the financial benefit of blocking off of the main road which runs beside the beach with commercially owned restaurant tables and chairs justify the resulting inconvenience and hazards for residents
6
and road users because of this road closure. Secondly the construction of the new bicycle lane on Avenida Santiago Bernabau combined with the new traffic system also creates additional public safety hazards. I was told recently that a young girl was injured by a young cyclist who was attempting to cycle through Santa Pola. I wish to know how do cyclists safely access or exit the cycle lane without mounting congested pedestrian footpaths at present. Thirdly the orientation of the new car parking spaces at the end of Avenida Santiago Bernabau seems to have created greater problems, discomfort and inconvenience for drivers who now have to reverse into these new parking spaces. It does appear that the older parking spaces close by, which allow cars to drive into and reverse out of, are far easier to use and are safer. Fourthly in relation to works recently completed in the Glorieta. The water fountains, which gave a cooling and refreshing, effect as well as adding a pleasant visual aspect to the concrete paved square. The removal of all of these fountains does seem to be an unjustifiable expenditure. I believe that any necessary water pipe renewal - lagging work would have been less expensive and the more satisfactory long-term solution. Finally there appears to be an increase in the amount of litter around overflowing litter-bins along some beach areas and polystyrene waste in the port area. I just wonder if the litter-bins could be emptied

more frequently during the tourist season and whether the port area could be kept as clean as in previous years. I fee that public safety and welfare should also be considered by the Town Hall before any long-term Public Work project is decided upon. Kind Regards Harry M. Town Hall Answer: First of all, the new traffic system has been designed in order to force the majority of traffic volume to flow by road known as Ronda Norte. In fact, Police Department states that this year there have not had so many accidents, compared to last year. Furthermore, the new traffic system, whose main aim is to recover more space for the pedestrians, wants both encourage people not to use their cars for everything (getting lower levels of pollution) and create new, safe and comfortable places for pedestrians to have a snack or simply to take a pleasant walk around ours streets. Secondly, the new traffic system which has been settled up on Santiago Bernabeu Avenue reunites both traits more safety for the pedestrians and for the cyclists, because there is just one way to Varadero, and the cars have not to go so close to the cycle lane (and thus, the cyclists have not to go so close to the pedestrian footpath). Regarding to the orientation of the new car parking spaces, there is a very logical reason why the Town Hall has decided to do that this way: safety. This Avenue has got a moderate traffic flow stress by summer, and many people want to park there in order to go to the beach in that area. These people, for their bath, carry some umbrellas for the beach, some plastic chairs, etc., and with the new orientation they do not have to take all those things out of the car by the side of the road (where there are more car flowing), but they can do that by the side of the pedestrian footpath, with no risks at all.
and it was a slight dangerous situation for them). In addition, about the fountains, which were in front of Castle, the Valencian law of patrimony forbids to have them there because the view of the Castle was being disrupted. Regarding to your complaint about the rising amount of litter around some beaches, it has been transferred to both Beach Department and the company, which is in charge of the local cleaning Q: 3-day festival Well here we are again with the 3-day festivities on the market car park. Do they ever think of the disturbance caused by the noise especially those living on the road who have to shut all there windows and doors to keep out the nice and turn the television up to its maximum. I know it’s just 3 days and most people that turn up don’t live in the area. You can hear the speakers bouncing off the flats opposite. Last night police drove on car park and done nothing to reduce the volume at 11.45 if it was an English bar they would be tolled to reduce noise or shut doors in Bars. Rule for one, rule for another! Typical attitude. As I say it’s distressing for residents having to listen to the noise, you cant go to bed until after 2 o’clock in morning. Why can’t they find another venue away from urbanizations? Regards, Graham Town Hall Answer: We know that sometimes the Fiestas can be a little bit noisy, but there are just son: Feasts. A simple representation of our social conscience. It is a time for us in order to celebrate and to have fun with our neighbours and family. But, regarding to the law, it is allowed to keep the Fiestas going on until 2.30 a.m., so we ask for the citizens patience in order to look for the neighbour’s harmony. Old Penne Grande Bar I have visited Santa Pola this week and had a shock. Penne Grande has gone and been

replaced by the life bar. I ordered 1 coffee and 2 soft drinks and was shocked after the bill came. Not only did double the prices the service was terrible the man got order wrong and then tried to charge us for extra drinks we hadn’t had. If I had of been a tourist I would not have thought to check receipt first before paying. Please print in magazine to warn people. Kind Regards, Donna
BARRY’S BITS OF NEWS: Q: Beach Bars A couple of pictures of the new bar and toilet areas springing up around our coast. The beach by the white church, and one or two other venues on the coast, has now had smart new bars and toilets built. Has the Town Hall built these and taking revenue, or has it been privately rented out?
unprofessional use of the hyphen. Nearly every paragraph has hyphens at the end of lines of text. It is very simple to set up the computer to avoid this horrible practice. To those concerned, old printers, even older than my 71 years, are shuddering in their graves. ********** Phew what a hot month. 40 degrees temperatures and still 30 degrees at bedtime. This is what we came here for. Best place during the day is on one of our fabulous beaches. A nice cool breeze and the refreshing Mediterranean sea for a cool down…….bliss!! ********** An earthquake measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale shook the area south of Alicante on Monday at 16.40 and was the largest tremor in the province since 1960. ********** News of people who were robbed in Mercadona car park last month in Gran Alacant. Parked a car at back of theirs so they could not move from parking space and stuck head in open window asking directions, shoving a map at them, while looking at the map other guy opened the back of the car and took a bag from the back seat. ********** Boats in the Santa Pola harbour, all ready for another special day.
Town Hall Answer: These new kind of chiringuitos which have been set up in our beaches are no lasting constructions but temporary ones, that have been done by the local companies which are in charge of them (the Town Hall has done a public concurrence in order to select these companies or people). ********** More and more in newspapers and magazines, we are seeing the very

Yet again, the pirate Gran Alacant taxis. For years, the taxi drivers of Santa Pola have been facing a difficult problem: the 'pirate taxis' of Gran Alacant. There are private cars, driven in the great majority of cases by foreign citizens, usually British, who advertise in bars and on the Internet, because they know where to get people. The president of Pola Taxi, Jose Enrique Blasco and the treasurer, Vicente Aznar, explain that these illegal taxis pick up passengers especially in Gran Alacant and at the airport. They do many services to the airport, back and forth. They wait for customers in the area who allow 15 minutes without paying and load their bags as if they are legal. ********** To those of you who love a market. There is one that takes place on the back road of Los Arenales every Tuesday and Friday, from 6pm to 11pm - until 7th September. ********** The saga of the new GA school rumbles on. The Town Hall has now been asked for the specific modification of the land, which is now educational, as well as the public health report and the road development project. Surely this was completed years ago when this venture was first muted. Or is it an excuse for even more delay. ********** Sent to me by a reader who was at the scene, a male body was found on the beach between Gran Alacant and Santa Pola on August 12th. Along from the little church about 300 metres along heading towards Santa Pola. The guy was white, in shorts, t-shirt and trainers. Died recently. Had some seaweed over his body so maybe in the water overnight. So sad to hear. Think that is the first time in the 13 years of this magazine it has ever had to report anything similar. **********
The problem is that it is very difficult to prove that they do this service, you can only know if you ask the passenger and he says he has paid. This is what the airport police are now doing. If it is shown, the car is taken by the police breakdown truck and the penalty to get it out of their car pound can be 3,000 euros plus. ********** Walking Football Celebrating 50th session Gran Alacant Oldies Walking Football club are looking for someone to referee their weekly sessions. Any age. Congratulations are due to all on August 23rd when our 50th weekly session took place (and they said it wouldn´t last).
The 50th session of walking football was celebrated at Bar Sioux with a buffet and cakes for all the players and a well earned drink for the organiser Barry Lane for all his hardwork.

Also I have been able to secure a time and day for a permanent place playing inside at the Gran Alacant sports hall. From Thursday September 13th we will ALWAYS be kicking off at noon and playing until 1pm, every Thursday.
Every year on Gran Alacant it’s the same old story. Weeds weeds and more weeds, rubbish, and more rubbish, making the urbanisation look like a third world country. *Surely with the same old weeds growing in the same places, the Town Hall team can put it on a rota, to get rid of them regularly.
I would like to thank all of the players in making this club such a resounding success. Even now, we still have new players joining us each week. In fact, one of the latest told me how knackered he was after 15 minutes and did not realise just how strenuous it would be. So, if you are interested, please email me on laneinspain@hotmail.com **********
*With the rubbish problems every year. We know it’s the peoples fault, we know they should not send kids to the bin who cannot reach the lid. We know people can´t be bothered. *Oil all over the roads near to the bins, where vehicles have stopped to off load their rubbish. Instead of using the same old excuses every year, WHY NOT DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. Surely an extra collection by a truck every day to keep everywhere tidy. Keep Gran Alacant looking nice. If you would like to supply news and info for our next edition, please email: info@granalacantadvertiser.com
Hello Everybody, Well, the summer is almost over! Everyone must have been impressed with the variety of entertainment in the bars and restaurants in all areas of the town. Obviously with an influx of visitors the bin issues appeared again i.e. rubbish piled at side of bins. The town hall is continually trying to find a way to solve the problem, so please be patient. We hope you all enjoyed your time in Gran Alacant and come back to visit us again soon. Have a good month, Ged & Lou Our little dog Zia and our cat Casper have hidden themselves away in the magazine, can you find them? Last month Zia was on page 17 and Casper on page 40

AlacantKey KEY HOLDING SERVICE
We are based in Gran Alacant Email: alacantkey@gmail.com T: 865 660 990 M: 665 638 759

HIKING WITH HEIDI & OLLI THE PATHS LESS TRAVELED
Cruz de la Muela, Sierra de Orihuela
Driving Time: 0:45 Walking Time: 2:40h Google maps directions: Calle Alicante M Pinar, 14, 03316, Orihuela, Alicante
My name is Heidi and I come from Helsinki, Finland. With my husband Olli-Pekka and our 3 dogs we live in Gran Alacant and enjoy the brilliant Mediterranean climate and possibility of discovering new hiking routes all over our Alicante province and sometimes even a bit further.
Pinar to the campo and that’s where the trail is. After you get on the right path, it’s very well marked. If you are unsure if you’ll find it, go during the weekend. I bet there’s loads of people walking towards the lemon trees. I found some very interesting history of the cross online: The cross is made of iron
Ironically, I have a fear of heights, but I love the views from tops of the mountains too much to stay away. Our dogs are getting older so all the hikes need to be suitable for them too as they always go on our adventures with us. I also love photography and always take load of pictures from our hikes. This month we chose to visit the Cruz de la Muela which offers most spectacular views. How to get there: The trail we took to the cross starts from the middle of the street Calle Alicante M Pinar, 14, 03316 Orihuela, Alicante. Insert that to your Google Maps and you should drive there in 40-45 minutes from Gran Alacant. Don’t walk up the street towards the hill. The route starts towards the lemon trees. Continue the street Calle Orense M

iron cross, which disappeared during the years of the civil war. In 1942 it was placed again, (of iron) until the 2nd of January in 1985 it was mysteriously cut by “uncontrolled barbarians” and thrown from the top. That same year it was rebuilt by popular demand and placed there again by an army helicopter. We think this is a very interesting place and a very nice hike. We climbed to 465m above the sea level. It took us 2 hours and 40 minutes from the car to be back at the car. Coming down took us about 1 hour. Mind you, we walk with 3 dogs and take breaks to drink water. The area where the cross is kind of small and it has some steep hills looking down. I admit the first time got nearly panicky. Next times it was easier. The views from this hike are spectacular and city of Orihuela is close by so I recommend to have a stroll there too.
Next month we go on foot again. MIRROR CORNER Dear readers, This corner will be devoted to give you some help and emotional support. Using a well known psychological tool called “projection” I will hope to achieve this. Others expressing their feelings and situations seems to be one of the best ways to have a truly good look “inside” ourselves. To do this mechanism of empathy and projection (basic human emotional defence) we can create, recreate, build and rebuild different points of view about different situations. We grow on this basis. My proposal is for you to bring me different, real situations that can have an impact on our everyday lives, and that may also be an interesting topic to others. I encourage you to take an active part and bring me situations, ask me questions or some possible suggestions, even a consultation if required. This way we are all co-operating together in “mirror corners” to make it work for our own benefits and interests. This information from yourselves will all be kept in the strictest confidentiality, names, emails, telephone numbers will not appear, you can even leave it simply as ‘anonymous’ for ease.
“MOMENTS OF HAPPINESS” “ JUST DO IT” Today is time to take a look at the HAPPINESS. What is it? Is it something with shape? Can you touch it? The car manufacturer Renault tells us that we have to go ¨beyond limits” and the company uses strong and dedicated people to sell their cars. Why? Because there is a lot of extraordinary people out there trying to go beyond limits and they need that social ACTIVE brand to sell the car. They promise happiness because by buying the car, these people will actually go through whatever and feel stronger as a consequence. Reach HAPPINESS BY DRIVING IT by going further and further, from one point to another! Electronic gadgets of all sorts such as mobiles, computers, phones, apps etc. All of them are making you feel something, being in contact with whatever you can imagine, without storing, without ¨reality¨. You can gain new EXPERIENCES by pressing parts of the screen or by gently sliding your fingers across it ... isn´t it amazing? Think about daily cosmetic products like perfumes, soaps, creams etc … what are they selling? They are selling EXPERIENCE (freshness, scents, sensations). Why? Because nowadays human beings are realizing that it’s not the THINGS themselves that make us happy. It is the EXPERIENCE that comes out of them that makes us HAPPY!
World has developed to such a point, that we are not collecting things anymore; we are collecting EXPERIENCES…Think about it!!! NOTHING lasts FOREVER is a new motto nowadays! This change of universal mind comes with changes in all aspects of our lives! PARTNERS: not that long ago, the marriage was

Kids have always played an important part in life. Now the importance is the same, but there are new ways of conception, adoptions and the concepts are different. Family in itself still seems a solid structure but is it exactly the same? WORK: just a decade ago we chose our career path, studied for qualifications and then got a job based on our studies. What happens now? Nowadays, we have to study and specialize more and more to look for a kind of precious hole for you. KIDS: with these latests changes, kids are just a projection. We are asking them to learn things they see as useless and serving no purpose. We ask them study old histories, and learn how to work out difficult arithmetic formulas. They don´t see the point because they all have calculators, and further more … they have an access to internet on their computers and mobile phones that can provide them with all the information they need. They can do most of the things they want to, without having to have the knowledge to CREATE them. We are all attached to TECHNOLOGY… as a consequence we are becoming less and less creative … So, I feel I have a COMPROMISE from my little “Mirror Corner” Summer is at the countdown, so my proposal is to make ¨CREATIVE EXPERIENCES”. Make a COMPROMISE for the rest of the work or study year. In every month ahead of you, make a new proposal. The aim is to keep the sense of “ belonging” to the family, to the nature and to yourself.
You can message me to see how it goes … if you like it or if you don’t. 1) CREATE A NEW MOMENT WITH THE YOU LOVE: with family, friends etc. It can an be a simple drink while watching the sun go down, trying to cook a new recipe, scheduling a walk together or going for a bicycle ride, seeing a new movie, joining new fitness class etc … Share your ideas and drop me an email to inspire others! 2) DESIGN A DIFFERENT CORNER AT WORK: just for you! Hang few new pictures that inspire you or get a new plant for your desk. If you can´t make any physical changes, then make a change in your work routine. Make a change that makes you happy! 3) MAKE TIME FOR A ¨CAR TALK¨, “ICE CREAM” TALK OR COSY “TEA TALK” WITH YOUR KIDS: Make sure to find time to do this at least every 7- 8 days … create an atmosphere where you can play a “friendrole” and become their friend rather than a parent for some time. Dear readers, I would be delighted to hear from you. Tell me about your feelings, about your new ACTIONS and new EXPERIENCES. We can make this change together and take the best out of this experience! BEA xxx I would love for you to suggest to me some topics you want to know about, for sure I will have had some real topics related to it during my past work history, I have twenty years of folders to investigate. You can ask me any questions, and I will give you my contribution in the form of suggestion, hoping it can help you.

Mayka’s Kitchen
SIERRA MAR
Mayka’s Kitchen Hi all, This month I would like to make a very simple but tasty recipe. It’s one of my favourites because my Nan used to make it when we visited her during our summer holidays (we loved helping her to collect the beans from her garden). Hope you enjoy xxx
Beans with Serrano Ham
Ingredients •
1lb fresh broad beans or string beans, ends removed
•
1tbsp white wine vinegar
•
2tbsp olive oil
•
3 cloves garlic, minced
•
4tbsp onion, minced
•
4oz diced Serrano ham slices
•
Sea salt
Let’s Start! STEP 1 In a saucepan, boil 2 quarts of water. Add the vinegar and beans. Boil for 5 minutes. Strain and add to a bowl of cold water to stop the cooking process. STEP 2 Add the olive oil to a skillet over medium high heat. Saute the beans until lightly browned, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic, onion and ham, and cook for 10 to 15 minutes until the beans are tender. Add salt to taste. You can also add some tomato sauce if you like - it’s delicious too!

Out & About with Star & Ashlee INDOOR WALL ALICANTE Hi my name is Star and I have been lucky enough to call Gran Alacant my home for over 10 years now. My 8 year old daughter Ashlee and I are often “Out & About” enjoying the local attractions and culture in this part of Spain. Over the next few months I will be sharing some of our experiences with you to encourage you to go “Out & About” yourselves and maybe learn a little bit about this beautiful place we call home. At the beginning of August, Ashlee was invited to a friend’s birthday party, which was being held at the Indoor Wall, Alicante. I looked it up online and discovered that it was an indoor climbing centre with lots of different areas for all abilities. With her new trainers on, Ashlee and I set off to an industrial area in Alicante. After following the instructions from Google Maps we arrived but had to search a few streets before finding the actual warehouse. Once there we said Hola to everyone and excitedly went inside to see what types of climbing walls there would be. On the left side of the warehouse was a large flat wall as well as angled walls, overhangs and obstacles to clamber around. On the right side was the information desk, toilets and a food counter. Further along was an area that had been set up with birthday food and then small climbing wall that also had tunnels and a small zip line.
60
The organisers sorted the kids out into two groups and gave them the task of climbing different routes along the smaller wall, through the tunnels and down the zip line. The kids each took it in turns to climb, scramble and fly down the zip line trying to go over an obstacle and hit a target with their feet. They thoroughly enjoyed it and gave us parents few giggles as they knocked the obstacle out of the way before hitting the target. Next up was the rope swing where they took it in turns to start from stack of thick safety mats and swing across to a smaller mat that got further and further away. The instructors were really good with them, gave great instructions and helped the really young ones so that they could also enjoy the experience. Finally they were ready for the big flat wall …… after putting on their safety harnesses and receiving instructions they were off, two at a time they raced to see how high
Out & About with Star & Ashlee CARABASSI CENTRE
Out & About with Star & Ashlee up they could go using the different shaped hand/foot holds that were spaced apart. Ashlee and her friends had a great time trying to get as high as they could and a couple actually made it all the way to the top.
After all the exercise it was time for the kids to replenish their energy with lunch, lots of water and refreshing watermelon (remember that we were in the middle of a heat wave at the beginning of August). The birthday girl then opened all her gifts while a couple of the adults tried to climb the high wall. The kids then spread out to tunnel, climb and swing as much as they liked until the party was over. Ashlee and her friends really enjoyed themselves and we will definitely go back (in the cooler months) to see if this time Ashlee can climb higher.
From September their opening hours are Monday to Friday 10:00 - 22:30 and Saturdays, Sundays and fiestas 10:00 20:00. You can pay for one session, get tickets for 10 visits or pay a monthly fee for individuals, or groups. They also offer personal classes, courses and equipment hire. DRAMA IN A TEACUP

Lizzy had been in the same house for many years and she liked living there. It was quiet and secluded and yet she always felt safe and comfortable with her neighbours. Although many of them had pets, the cats didn’t stray in her garden and the dogs were generally well behaved. Today however, Bobby, the terrier next door, had been barking incessantly. He started just after the sun rose and the noise continued until lunch time. She imagined the dog was exhausted when the silence fell from over the fence but it was short lived. Resuming the high pitched yapping, Bobby appeared to be almost in distress but that was small consolation to Lizzy, who by this time was beginning to lose her composure. She did have a run in once before with Frank, Bobby’s owner, soon after he had moved in. The dog was obviously unsettled by the move and barked a lot of the time when Frank was not at home. They agreed a plan to work with Bobby to calm him down and the two neighbours became firm friends. Their friendship was not strained by Frank’s indulgence in an ever changing variety of hobbies, most of which involved some sort of bustling activity in his garden shed. All manner of strange objects would occasionally appear in the garden as some kind of temporary adornment, only to be replaced by the next item which he would take away to some undisclosed destination in his van. He had also begun to collect a few more pets. The cat was the laziest she had ever seen. A large ginger thing with the greenest of eyes, it would lie on Frank’s garden chair for hours, motionless. His parrot could only be heard occasionally squawking when Frank came home but otherwise it was no bother. She knew there were tropical fish but what else there might be she knew not. The barking was now a complete nonsense. Lizzy couldn’t relax and she wondered if something could be wrong. The van was

in the drive and she had not heard Frank in the house or in his shed. Although it was a weekend, he usually left the house on some errand or other. Perhaps she should try to calm Bobby and see if Frank was at home. Lizzy went out the front door and peered over the fence. Bobby was no-where to be seen but his barking helped Lizzy to decide that he was in the small dog house that Frank had built for Bobby to protect him from the rain and sun. But why would he stay in the dog house? Bobby would more often than not, be harassing the cat into some sort of action, without success of course. But the cat was not on its usual perch. Lizzy went to Frank’s front gate and pressed the bell push. Ah, there would be no response because all the door bells had been shorted out after yesterday’s power cut. She tried the gate but it was locked. The back garden was accessible by a path at the side of Frank’s house and when Lizzy looked over the back fence and passed the garden shed, she could see that the back door was slightly open. Lizzy tried calling Frank’s name but over the barking of the dog, which was carrying well from the font garden, her weak voice was unlikely to be heard. She tried the back gate and it opened. Tentatively, Lizzy went to the open door but stopped short, suddenly when she saw two legs sticking out from under the kitchen table. What to do? Run to phone the police, try her neighbours for help or go to see if there was something she could do immediately? She had to help. Taking a deep breath, Lizzy moved to the back door and opened it wide. There was no movement from the legs. She reached down to touch one foot and sprang back in fear when Frank suddenly spun round on the floor to face her from under the table. “Hi Lizzy, have you seen my pet snake? It went missing this morning and it’s got Bobby in a right state.”

GRAN ALACANT GOLF SOCIETY Well, August has been a quiet month with the course at El Plantio closed from 20 August to the end of the month. In the 2 weeks prior to the 20th we did welcome many new players to our society meetings; some who will play with us most weeks from now on and some who will join us when they visit holiday homes in the future. From the beginning of September the golf here in Spain moves into the high season and we expect the course will get busier. As a consequence the pricing will reflect that shift and the low offers seen in August will no longer be available. However , as a Society, we will still receive a sustantial discount to the “off the street “ pricing. As always new members and/or guests are always welcome, whether a full time resident, someone with your own holiday home for regular visits throughout the year or a holiday maker in the region. We would love to see you. For more information please contact either Barry C (686180585) or Barry D (966183018).

TROPOSPHERIC OZONE POLLUTION is bigger. The effects are caused by the irritation, and include pneumonia, asthma crises, chronic bronchitis, coughing, and also ocular irritations with conjunctivitis. Where is ozone? The main problem with ozone is that it moves: traffic contamination is more important in towns, but the ozone produced when sunlight makes this traffic contamination react, appears and gets accumulated mostly in country areas. Besides, the effect of sea breeze makes ozone concentration get increased at
Tropospheric ozone is a secondary pollutant, which means it’s produced by the action of sunlight on other pollutants. During the summer, and especially during heat waves, sunlight effect is maximum, and big quantities of tropospheric ozone are produced. Tropospheric ozone, which is a pollutant, mustn’t be confused with stratospheric ozone, which protects us from UV radiation, so it’s good for animals and plants. Tropospheric ozone is a powerful oxidant, and affects environment, people, plants, animals and materials due to this strong oxidant effect. Sunlight makes some particles at the atmosphere (for example the ones coming from cars exhausts) react and produce ozone. This ozone remains at the atmosphere and it irritates respiratory tract by inhalation, and skin, eyes and membranes by direct contact. When temperatures are very high, our pets pant in order to reduce their body temperature, but since panting means breathing very quickly, they breathe a higher volume of ozone, and the damage

midday and evening, and this is important, because we prefer to go for a walk with our dogs in the evening because temperatures are not so high, so they get exposed to this pollutant. Some of the most important effects of heat waves are caused by high ozone concentrations rather than high temperatures themselves. Unfortunately there is nothing we can do for reducing ozone environmental concentrations, because regulations for reducing atmospheric pollutant emissions are a task for the authorities, but one thing we can do is to choose a less dangerous hour for taking our dogs for a walk. WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge
Little Owl
Well it looks like I’ve been lumbered yet again with trying to think up something to write for this month’s GA Advertiser, it’s a tedious job but somebody’s got to do it. As the Spanish would say – estoy encargado con el mochuelo – I’ve been given a Little Owl. Wait, what? I am unable to fathom exactly why a charismatic small bird like the Little Owl should be considered to be a drudge by the Spanish. They are common throughout Spain, and their habit of perching out in the open during daylight hours makes them quite easy to see. In the Clot, you are likely to find one perched high in a dead tree – if you can approach it carefully without frightening it off, it will glare at you with those baleful eyes and I guarantee you will lose that particular staring competition by blinking first. There may be up to five pairs in the Clot, they are highly territorial birds and stay faithful to the same area, so much so in fact that when you find one, you are quite likely to see it in exactly the same place the following day! They can also be found out in the country, often in old ruined buildings and around
86 86
farmyards, hunting mainly at dawn and dusk. Their prey includes beetles, caterpillars, moths, spiders, lizards, slugs and small rodents, all in plentiful supply in the Clot. Being a fierce, daring bird, equipped with powerful talons, it will tackle mammals and birds up to its own size. The little owl used to be thought responsible for the destruction of eggs and young game birds, but analysis of the contents of their pellets proved that this was untrue. Nowadays it is regarded as a useful pest destroyer in gardens and on farmland. It was introduced to the UK from Holland in 1889 and has spread across most of England and Wales, just reaching into southern Scotland but no further north. It is found throughout Europe, North Africa and across Asia as far as Korea, As its Latin name Athene Noctua implies, this owl was associated with the Greek goddess Athene. She was originally a goddess of war but was also worshipped as the goddess of intelligence. Athene took the owl as her emblem, and its image was stamped on several silver coins. Although the Greeks had a great respect for the Little Owl, the Romans later regarded it as a bird of ill-omen! But back to that peculiar Spanish expression about the Little owl being likened to a tiresome task - I don’t see how that follows, sitting out in the sunshine, getting all you need and afraid of nothing, the Little Owl has a very nice existence here in Spain. You can see more of the birds in our area by visiting my site at: http://marketheridge.smugmug.com/ See you next month.
