Hello Everyone, Welcome to June’s SPECIAL edition. What a strange month May was with weather that should have been here in February or March, still the rain was needed, but now we will be looking forward to plenty of sunshine for the rest of the summer. As you will see this month we have increased the size of your Gran Alacant Advertiser, we hope you like it. The 30th of May saw the official opening of Buddies (formally Crazy Daisy) with it´s brand new snooker table and 2 pool tables, see their ad on page 39, also the same evening The Yellow Submarine disco opened, their ad is on page 43. We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news from the Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005.

THE TRAIN is coming to GRAN ALACANT Official approval has been given for the train (pictured). It will take 2 months for the train to be provided and for all of the paperwork to be completed meaning a mid July delivery, so, in the meantime, in mid June, a smaller train will be starting the service until the larger size one becomes available. The train will run continuously around GA on a circular route. This means that you could either go on your own tour of the urbanisation, or get on or off at any point that suites you,

including near to the beach. Once the route is finalised, we will add it to our map at the back of the

magazine. Another Commercial Centre is being built, as if we do not have enough now. As you come off the N332, turn left at the roundabout, it is in front of all of the new properties on your left. See pic at the bottom of this page. The Town Hall is building at the moment “3 Petanca” courts in the Municipal Sports Centre on Gran Alacant. There have been requests for this from the people living here so the Town Hall is having them built for us all to use. As you know Penanca is the Spanish word for Boules or Petanque, so please make use of them. The new school year will start in the new school for the children of Gran Alacant. There will be 450 places for the children, the school will have a dining hall, sports area and all the facilities that the children need to have a good education. The cost of the new construction of the school is 5.5 million euros and has been paid for by the Valencian Government. There has also been a total amount of 1.600.000 euros invested for the rehabilitation of the other schools already built in Santa Pola. There is a new water tank in Gran Alacant. This new tank has a capacity of 2.000 m3 and it has been constructed to cover the

needs for water that we require on Gran Alacant. This tank has been constructed with the latest techology and the best materials to give the best output. There is a new Paeditrician service for Gran Alacant children now, at the Medical Centre. This service will be every Tuesday and Friday from 9.00 to 11.00am, and it is hoped soon to be able to have this service every day. The Councillor of Health and the Mayor are negotiating with the Valencian government for the construction of a bigger Health Centre in a different area on Gran Alacant, with more Doctors and services, we will tell you more when there is news from the Valencian government.

Other news We were asked if we could help

one morning, when 4 kittens were left in a box outside The Phoenix restaurant. We contacted Shell who is a Unsheltered animal volunteer, she arranged to collect them that day. We telephoned Shell 2 days later to find out how the kittens were, she told us that she thought they were only 5 weeks old, so she gave them some special food then immediately took them to the Vet, who did tests and is going to treat

them for a skin complaint, as Shell said, they will have to be kept away from other cats until the complaint is cleared up, all this costs alot of money, and as they rely on donations any help would be much appreciated. It is good to know that there are people like Shell around who do try to help abandoned animals. We have also received a large response from our website, where you can read the whole magazine via our new page turning software. We were contacted by the Costa Blanca Forums, who asked us if we would like to make the magazine available to their site. This then gives all of our advertisers the opportunity of reaching potetntial customers not only on the Gran Alacant forum, but also the forums of: La Marina, Santa Pola, Alicante, Torrevieja, Guardamar, Almoradi, Algorfa, Dolores, & Javea. We have decided NOT TO CHARGE for this, but to make it available to all of our readers and advertisers, FOR FREE. Also, to help businessess through these difficult times, we also intend to keep our prices, as they were when we launched the magazine, nearly four years ago. A man had just settled into his seat next to the window on the plane when another man sat down in the aisle seat and put his black Labrador dog in the middle seat next to the man. The first man looked very quizzically at the dog and asked why the dog was allowed on the plane. The second man explained that he was a DEA agent and that the dog was a 'sniffing dog'. He told Sniffer to 'search'. Sniffer jumped down, walked along the aisle, and finally sat very purposefully next to a woman for several seconds. 'I like it!' said his seat mate. The agent then told Sniffer to 'search' again. Sniffer walked up and down the aisles for a little while, sat down for a moment, and then came racing back to the agent, jumped into the middle seat and proceeded to poop all over the place. The first man was really grossed out by this behaviour and couldn't figure out how or why a well-trained dog would behave like that, so he asked the agent, 'What's going on?' The agent nervously replied, 'He just found a bomb!'

Gran Alacant will open for the next term its first Public School with the capacity for 450 students, consisting of 12 primary classrooms, dining room sports area and accommodation for school caretaker, etc. This magnificent building has had invested more than 5.500.000 euros (nearly thousand million of the old pesetas). The Popular Party and the Mayor, Miguel Zaragoza, keeps the promise he made to the citizens of Gran Alacant to give them their first Public School n. 7.

Once again we have exposed the LIES AND UNTRUTHS OF JUANI SORIANO when she maintained without any shame that the Popular Party would not construct a school for the children of Gran Alacant only prefabricated huts. Sra. Soriano, what lies will you now invent, now that the school is finished? Maybe you will say it is thanks to your “political negotiation” in the Town Hall. Sra. Soriano, in politics not anything goes; it is not ethical or moral to trick people just to gain a handful of votes, reflex on it if you can, and apologise to the parents of the children of Gran Alacant who believed in your words and now feel defrauded and deceived by you and your leader Sra. Lafuente and your followers. In the 16 years that the Socialist governed Santa Pola, and the 4 years that Maria Lafuente was the councillor of education, never once did she have the minimum interest in getting a public school for Gran Alacant. The Popular Party keeps all its promises that were made in our Electoral Programme, modernisation under structure of drainage, saving of water, etc., we are finalizing the work on the New Public School Virgen de Loreto, extending the IES Cap de l’Aljub and to implement new public services for all citizens. Why Juani Sano as a professional in the health service did not have any interest in creating a Public Health Service in Gran Alacant?

We have also been able to get for the citizens of Gran Alacant for the first time the service of a new Tourist Office situated at the side of the Municipal Office. Marinated Roasted Lamb Cutlets with cherry tomatoes and garlic. Serves 2. 4 lamb cutlets. 8 garlic cloves (unpeeled). 8 baby cherry tomatoes. Sprigs of fresh thyme/rosemary. Olive oil.

Method. *Season lamb cutlets with a little salt, ground pepper and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. Place in an ovenproof dish. *Put a small cross in the top of each tomato and place on top of the cutlets. *Scatter the eight garlic cloves (unpeeled) over the lamb cutlets. *Arrange the sprigs of thyme around the dish. *Drizzle over ingredients with a little virgin olive oil. *Place in hot oven 200C (ovens vary) cook until cutlets are pink and the garlic and tomatoes are soft to the touch. Preparing an older computer to run Windows Vista

If you really must use Windows Vista, it is much easier if you buy it already installed on a new computer. But there are many users who like to install an operating system themselves, or feel the need to run the latest operating system, and for all of you I have done the dirty work myself. If you are going to install on your system the first thing YOU MUST do is run Microsoft's Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor tool, which can be found at www.microsoft.com/vista. On the left-hand side of the screen, under featured downloads you will see a link to the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor. Click on this link and download the software. It is 6.6Mb in size. Once downloaded, run the programme and this will check if your system is CAPABLE of running Vista and will also highlight any areas that need upgrading. When doing so ensure you have everything plugged in that you will use with the new system. This includes your printer, camera, scanner etc. There is no point updating to Vista if your camera, printer, scanner or anything else is not compatible. If any parts of your system are currently not compatible with Vista, try checking the items manufacturer's website support pages for your device to see if they have, or will be likely to supply, drivers for Vista. Check very carefully, or you could end up unable to use your camera/printer, or be forced to buy new models. If your computer is capable of running Vista, you can now purchase your copy and run the install programme. When the installation begins, it seems like an age for it to install and about one third of the way through the installation the computer seems to freeze. It has not and do not turn it off, nor start hitting keys or the whole system will come crashing down. If you have room on your computer's hard disk, my recommendation would be to dual-boot Windows XP and Vista, thus if Vista fails you van always erase it and stick with XP, or when XP is no longer supported you can simply remove XP. If you do not know how to do this, then my advise is to ask a professional to help. Current Updates

For those of you using the free AVG anti-virus suite there is a new stable version, AVG 8. To get the free version type free.grisoft.com into your web browser and follow the links to download the software. Be aware that it is a 45.5Mb file which takes about 20 minutes on a broadband connection. Once downloaded it is necessary to restart Windows before downloading any updates to the virus database, so do not start the installation until you are prepared to do this. For those using Adaware SE anti-spyware, be advised that this is no longer supported and when you open the programme to run it, you will see a link to update the programme. Click on this link and follow the instructions to download Adaware 2007, the latest free version. BAILE BUS COMPANY

...will again this year (Starting July) be running a bus, round and round Gran Alacant. It will include Los Arenales, BUT NOT Alicante or Santa Pola. Their normal service will still cover these routes.

The service, will enable us all to get on or off at all parts of our urbanisation and will include the beaches. Look for the bus with the signs in the window Gran Alacant Los Arenales.

gran alacant Before the buzz of what is Plaza Mayor Square, there stood just two symbols that epitomise the British Empire - Churchill's Bar and Saffron Indian Restaurant. To celebrate four years of business here in Gran Alacant, Debbie and Denver, owner's of Churchill's Bar threw a party. A buffet was provided by Darby's Chippy (the food was delish!) and friends and regulars alike turned out as local crooner Steve Dale entertained. Reliable as ever, barman Mike (good Liverpool supporter) pulled pints as fast as he could to meet demand. With a smooth intro including Dean Martin's 'That's Amore', Steve steadily increased the tempo with Eddie Grant's 'Hope Joanna' and his signature tune - Tina Turner's 'Simply The Breast' No that isn't a misprint. If you want to know the significance of the subtle song name change then go along to one of his gigs.

A seasoned Costa Blanca entertainer, Steve played upto six nights a week in and around the Torrevieja area. However the birth of a grandchild and a house move had somewhat obstructed his nocturnal activities. All that behind him now he is eager to get busy once more for the upcoming season. On a quieter day, Churchill's has the feel of a quaint country inn. A place to switch off, reflect and with stunning views to the mountains Denver must feel as though he is in his native country - Wales but without the rain.

MY PET IS DEFINITIVELY OVERWEIGHT WHAT CAN I DO?

-Treats must be considered when calculating the daily quantity of food for the dog. If we think treats are absolutely necessary weʼve got two options: -Decreasing the daily quantity of normal dry food. -Using the dry food as a treat: every kind of food coming from our hand, together with nice words, would be preceived to the dog as a prize. Another common source of confusion would be when and where has our dog to eat. Some people believe the dog must have meals just after the owner in order to encourage owners authority, but this is not the most important thing, but the place where the dog has his meals: he should have a specific place where he will have some fresh water available and the bowl with the food. Itʼs a good idea to provide the food always at the same time, to leave it for 5-10 minutes in order to let the dog eat peacefully, and then to remove it (even if it is not empty), until the next day (if the dog is only having one meal a day), or until the next meal (if the dog has several meals a day). The first days he wonʼt probably learn the lesson and he will ask for some extra food between meals, but if we are tough those first days, weʼll see the results very soon. Of course, we mustnʼt offer the dog our food, and especially when we are actually having lunch or dinner. If we are not tough enough to ignore his

requirements, weʼd better close the door of the dining room and leave the dog out, without inviting him to have some food from his bowl. We must not "watch" our dog while he is eating, because some of them will think we want to steal his food, and some others will think we are expecting them to finish with the bowl quickly (which may produce overfeeding in some cases). Most dogs are not looking for food when they approach us or when they bark because we are back home, but if we feed them when they do it, they will learn to eat without hunger, or even worse, they will learn this inadequate behaviour (barking when we are back home, sitting on our legs when we sit on the sofa) because we are encouraging it unconsciously by using edible treats. The kind of food we provide our dog is also very important: weight loss diets are specially designed for providing enough proteins to avoid muscular loss, but they have a very low quantity of fat. For this reason, in some cases just reducing the daily quantity of the normal maintenance diet the dog is having may not be a good idea, because we are reducing both fat and proteins, so the dog may start to lose muscle weight. In those cases a much better idea would be providing a normal quantity of a low calorie food (quantity of proteins remains the same, but fat is decreased, so the dog will lose weight without losing muscular weight). The daily quantity of food will depend on the degree of overweight the dog has, and the diet must be controlled by a Vet, in order to get a weekly weight loss of about 0.5 - 2%, that means an average period of 20 weeks for a controlled weight loss to reach the ideal weight of the dog.

June is the month for the celebration of one of the biggest fiestas held in Spain “ Bonfires of St. John” there you can enjoy so many things, for example bullfighting from the 10th to 25th, fiesta in the streets from the 20th to 25th, on the night of the 24th the burning of the beautiful cartoon monuments. After the burning of the monuments for one week there will be held a fantastic international fireworks contest. Also all these municipalities that celebrate their main fiestas, Moors and Christians among them. Elda 3rd to 7th , Benjuzar 13th to 20th, 17th to 20th,

Pego 24th to 27th, Agost 24th to 28th , 25-28 Benissa 25th to 28th. On the night of the 23rd , hundreds of fires will be lit on the beach to celebrate ancestral rituals and traditions, there will also be a fiesta on the Levante beach. On the 21st there will be a concert in honour of the Lady of Rosario, on the 22nd, very early in the morning “La romeria” The “Cape Pilgrimage” to Our Lady of Rosario. The Lady is moved from town to her chapel situated in the Cape of Santa Pola and you are welcome to come and join us. Bye
