MONTEMAR BOWLS AND SOCIAL CLUB (Sponsored by Supa Valu) The re-arranged match between the Montemar Picadors and La Marina Explorers in the SABA Discovery League was played in the afternoon of Thursday 9th December resulting in the Picadors winning three rinks and drawing one. The rinks of Babs Caiger, Gordon Hemming and skip Bill Young did very well by scoring 32 to 8; Jan Soars, Mike Soars and David Eades scored 25 to 9, and Marilyn Gibbons, Ken Kirton and Ian Gibbons scored 20 to 15. While, Win Kirton, Terry Lemon and Terry Errington scored two on the last end to earn a draw 23 all. Bill Judd's rink losing by three shots and Danny King's rink lost by six shots. Total shots for the Picadors were 137, and those for the Explorers were 91. Result: The Picadors 9 points and the Explorers 5 points.
On a wet morning on the 10th December, the Matadors were away to Quesada Swallows in the Southern League Division A, winning on Four rinks and losing on two. “Singing in the rain”, Pam Lee, Ken Kirton and skip Gordon Fisher won 24 to 13; John Corbet, Stan Routledge and Ian Gibbons won 19 to 12; Win Kirton, Fred Taylor and Alan Ashberry won 17 to 14, and Denise Ashberry, Gordon Lee and Harry Dobson won 18 to16. Dave Melville's rink lost 13 to 16 but scored five on the last end. The Chairman’s rink got lost in the wet 11 to 30. Overall the Matadors just edged the shots by 102 to the Swallows 101. Result: The Matadors 10 points and the Swallows 4 points.
Monday 13th December. Today in the SABA Discovery league the picadors travelled to Greenlands to play the Yellows. On a very fast green we managed to win on three rinks out of the six played. Congratulations to David Smy, Alan Ashberry and skip Danny King who won 36 to 12. Late replacement Fred Charman, Mike Farrelly and Bill Young who won 18 to 11. Ken Kirton, Gordon Hemming, and Bill Judd who won 18 to 17. ¡Hay tantas cosas buenas para contar sobre este último mes!
No nos podemos creer, cuantas buenas personas hay en nuestras urbanizaciones, quienes siempre están dispuestos a ayudar con las actividades benéficas. Dos grandes eventos han tomado lugar recientemente. La Gran Fiesta de la Calle. Todos los participantes dieron su tiempo sin cobrar. El entretenimiento, que actuó gratuitamente. La cerveza fue suministrada gratis, sólo pedían 1 euro como donación a la organización benéfica. Enhorabuena a todos las empresas que participaron. Fue tan exitoso, que otra fiesta está planeada para principios de verano. Tuvimos un desfile de moda, donde los voluntarios hicieron de modelos, ayudaron con maquillaje y peluquería y voluntarios detrás del escenario ayudando a los modelos en los cambios de ropa, dando su tiempo libre. El esfuerzo que se metió en este desfile, los/las modelos, los ayudantes detrás del escenario...¡Bien hecho!, especialmente Ralph y Kate

Twee grote evenementen hebben we te melden van afgelopen weken.
De Big Street party. Alle mensen bedanken die hun vrije tijd benutten om gratis zich in te spannen voor liefdadigheid er werdt gevraagd om een schenking van 1 euro aan liefdadigheid te doen. Proficiat aan alle bedrijven die deel namen aan deze prachtige inspanning. Het was zo succesvol dat er een andere party is gepland voor begin van de zomer.
We hadden de mode show waar vrijwilligers het model waren, anderen deden het haar, en de make-up, voor het werk achter de schermen om te helpen de modellen te kleden.
Dank aan alle betrokkenen met name Ralph en Kate Jones, die het allemaal georganiseerd hebben en Sabine van 'Ab Fab voor het verstrekken van de kleding.
De opbrengst van 500 euro uit de mode show werd gepresenteerd aan de ziekte van Alzheimer vereniging van Santa Pola door Ralph en Kate

De viering van Kerstmis in het life resort zal ook hebben plaatsgevonden. We waren op een vergadering waar wij werden geïnformeerd over de werking van deze activiteiten. Ahora tenemos un fotógrafo adicional para todos estos eventos. Stefan nos ayuda añadiendo más y más fotos a nuestra revista, y está compilando dvd's de todos los eventos. Las llaves de los huertos ya han sido repartidas a quienes vayan a usar el terreno. Las fotos enseñan la presentación y la apertura oficial por el alcalde de Santa Pola, Miquel Zarragoza. Este es un proyecto pionero de nuestro municipio, 18 parcelas de 50m cuadrados cada una. GASP, nuestro grupo de teatro, presentó un cheque para caridad después de su actuación en Noviembre. También tenemos algunas personas muy artísticas en gran Alacant. Un grupo que va a clases semanales en Los Arenales, sus pinturas estuvieron en exhibición. Nuestra foto enseña a dos alumnos con el profesor. La Asociación de vecinos de Gran Alacant dio una tonelada de comida a la Organización Cáritas en diciembre. De buren vereniging van Gran Alacant gaf meer dan een halve ton aan levensmiddelen aan Cáritas Charity in december. De Gran Europese Resident Neighbour Association Alacant (ASVEGA) heeft dit afgeleverd aan Parochial Cáritas Santa Pola en dit voor behoeftige gezinnen, de leden van de groep verzamelden voedsel op 4 december. De levering aan Cáritas vond plaats 7 december dit werdt bijgewoond en openbaar gemaakt door het gemeenteraads lid van Gran Alacant, Loreto Cascales.

Alacant (ASVEGA) hizo una entrega a la parroquia Cáritas de 562 kg de comida para las familias en necesidad, los miembros del grupo estuvieron recaudando comida el 4 de Diciembre. La entrega a Cáritas dio lugar el 7 de Diciembre y ambas instituciones se hicieron públicas por la concejal Loreto Cascales. Según Vicente Bonora "en el discurso institucional del Día de la Comunidad Valenciana el Alcalde pidió ayuda para las familias necesitadas, así que el día 4 organizamos una donación de comida en varios supermercados y en una mesa al lado del Mercadona, obtuvimos 447 kg" Más tarde, la asociación trajo otros 115kg, lo cual hace un total de 562kg de comida. La gente ha sido muy buena, también los dueños de los locales que prestaron sus instalaciones en el Centro Comercial, es una iniciativa que se continuará organizando cada año. A unos amigos nuestros les intentaron robar el monedero en Lidl. Los ladrones todavía estaban en el local y fueron identificados, sólo para que los echaran, sin la intervención de la policía. Saludos

Later kocht de vereniging de andere 115 kilo, waardoor een totaal van 562 kilo aan voedings middelen kon gedoneerd worden. Mensen hebben wederom vrijgevig geweest, ook bedanken we de eigenaars van het Centro Commercial, dit is een initiatief dat zal weder keren elk jaar. Bij vrienden van ons is in lidl geprobeerd hun geldbeugel te roven . De rovers waren nog in de winkel aanwezig , dit werdt gemeld aan het personeel van lidl maar deze halden enkel hun schouders op , in plaats van de deuren te sluiten en de politie te verwittigen... u bent bij deze verwittigd wees op u hoede !!,
M.A.B.S. on GRAN ALACANT Firstly I would like to thank John at JP's Bar for hosting our Christmas Get-together, we tried to pay him for the tea and coffees but he would have none of it and he donated a prize for the Raffle too so we really appreciate this support. The Raffle raised 30 euros we also sold some of our MABS bags and Calendars. I would like to mention not Just Desserts who donated the most gorgeous large Chocolate Cake, which I did not win, and Quicksave for donating some gifts. Our President Jacqui Phillips came down from Moraira and along with our volunteers we had a very enjoyable afternoon. Aly one of our volunteers will be running in the Santa Pola half Marathon on 23rd January 2011 and she will be wearing one of our T-shirts and caps. Another family are coming over from England especially to support us who raised a lot of money this year in our "Walk for Life", Janet Gatwood, her daughters' Angela and Sharon and her husband will be running in memory of their father who died in January this year with Cancer of the pancreas. MABS helped them through this difficult time so they wish to raise money and awareness for us, we will be there again to cheer them on. Jean Reiterbund who is our fundraiser for MABS in Gran Alacant and will be busy next year on the entertainments side to raise money and our Treasurer Bill Hodges also came along. We are very sorry to learn that Dott is returning to Scotland, she is the Time for Me Therapies Masseur who has always supported us in many different ways and looked so unbelievable all dressed up in Pink for our "Walk for Life", our sincere thanks to her. Another lady who is a Masseur came in on Tuesday and said she would be happy to help us she is also qualified in Reiki, Stress and Chronic Pain Relief, also lymphic gland drainage which will greatly assist anyone going through chemotherapy. This would only be possible with consultation with the Doctor or Angie & Jan Consultant. If anyone would like to speak to this lady please contact me or Angela. This Leonberger puppy is just six months old and already he weighs 43.5 kilos! He was found abandoned in a country lane by the local police and they called us. He is in good condition and he has a gentle personality. We have names him Brutus.
Paco was found by the local police wandering along the middle of a main road through an urbanization. They were on their way to an emergency call-out and so, to protect him, they secured him behind the gates of a vacant house. My wife and I went to the location to collect him and take him to the vet clinic. He is in such good condition we expected an owner to come forward and claim him, unfortunately nobody has. He is small dog weighing approx 8 kilos and he has beautiful soft long fur. Bingo is a small dog that was seen wandering the streets of an urbanisation for many days before his rescue. He is a little timid at first but he is very loving and enjoys the company of people. He is approx 3 years. Bingo is good with other dogs and with cats.
Dan is a beautiful Ginger and White cat. He is very sociable and good with other cats, approx 1 year old and likes to sit on your lap.

Having just finished a breakfast in Not Just Deserts (one of the favourites for the Best Breakfast Award ) a couple sat down at the next table to us and started to discuss the restaurant awards with the staff " we have some fantastic restaurants in Gran Alacant " they said .....butting in (like you do) I introduced myself as Luton Town from the forum and that it was I that ran the awards ... and in turn they introduced themselves as Up The Iron from the forum .....to cut a long story short they went on to tell me that when we launched this years awards on November 4th they had so many favourite restaurants they just could not make their mind up.....so they booked a flight out to try their favourites just one more time before they voted .....for me it just made everything worth while.

On Sunday 28th November at the Life Resort, Gran Alacant. A charity fashion show was held in aid of the Alzeimers and Dementia Association of Santa Pola. Various local businesses helped sponsore the show but all of the clothes and fancy dress costumes were provided by Sabine, the owner of Absolutely Fabulous Boutique. Local ladies from Gran Alacant and Santa Pola modelled the clothes along with five male models who helped to make the show a great success. The FAT Club Five hundred euro was raised for the charity.

Hi everybody, In January the 5th we have parades for the Three Kings in every corner on the Costa Blanca. In Santa Pola it will take place on the 5th, of course, on the 2nd there will be activities, workshops, hold in Gran Alacant. If you want to enjoy one of the best parades for the Three Kings you have to go to Alcoy. I hope you have enjoyed, at least, one of the many cribs on display. In Santa Pola we have a beautiful one at the Castle. I know in Torrevieja there is another beautiful one. If you happen to go to Alicante, pop in at the Diputaci贸n Provincial building and have a look at the master pieces they got there. In Ca帽ada next to Villena, they make a performance of the birth and the arrival of the Three Kings to bring presents to Jesus, is real theatre carried out by amateurs. This event is declared of national tourist interest.

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge
It must be great to be a sound effects man in Hollywood – when you are asked to reproduce the sounds of a tropical forest, you just reach for your Kookaburra recording and slap it on the soundtrack. It doesn’t matter where the film is set – Africa, Asia, America – if it’s a jungle setting then a Kookaburra sound will do. That is why so many birders roll their eyes when a Kookaburra calls in a Tarzan film, for example, because they know that Kookaburras only live in Australia. But they do have a very distinctive call, and just about everyone knows what they sound like (a maniacal laugh if you’re one of the few who don’t). Another very distinctive call can be heard in the Clot. It’s far-carrying, very recognisable and yet you rarely see the bird making it unless you know where to look. It’s a loud “kyew” repeated five or six times very quickly, and again sounds a bit like laughter, and it comes from the Green Woodpecker (Pito Real in Spanish). There are three or four pairs resident in the Clot, and the place to see them is on dead trees as in my picture, where they bore out insects beneath the rotting bark and they also forage on the ground for ants, which they lick up in vast numbers with their long sticky tongue. They can be difficult to watch because as soon as they realise they are under observation, they will hop round to the far side of the tree and peek out at you in best undercover spy fashion. Now, as you may know, the Green Woodpecker is also resident in the UK, but I am now going to give you a chance to show your superior knowledge to visiting British birders. When they tell you they’ve seen a Green Woodpecker in the Clot, you can smile at them with an air of satisfaction and tell them that
actually they haven’t – what they have seen is in fact an Iberian Green Woodpecker, which is of the subspecies sharpeii and is subtly different from the British version; there is more grey in the head pattern, so they will owe you a drink for that! Back to the Kookaburra – I was surprised to see a pair of Kookaburras in Torellano, just a few miles from GA a few months ago. The reason why both Spanish and British birders haven’t descended en masse to join in my sighting is that, sadly, they were in the window of the local pet shop, and to be honest it was a rather depressing spectacle – they don’t belong here, they don’t make good pets and they’d be far better off in their native Australia. STOP PRESS : Anyone who read my Robin article last month and went into the Clot to look for one on or about the 1st of December – well I hope you looked closely because if you saw a Robin with red only on its sides just below the wings, you’ll have seen an extremely rare bird – a Red-Flanked Bluetail, an absolute Mega as we birders say!

DOGS MUNICIPAL REGISTRATION Some weeks ago we had a letter from Santa Pola Town Hall, in which we have been told to remind our clients of some special requirements for owning a dangerous dog. According to the Artical#17 of Ordenanza Municipal Reguladora de la Tenencia y Proteccion de Animals de Compañia (Municipal Ordinance for the Regulation of Companion Pet´s Owning and Protection):"...dog owners are obliged to register them at the Town Hall facilities"... This effect, not only dangerous dogs, but all of them. When registering our dog at the Town Hall, we are supposed to show an UPDATED Pet Passport, which implies: European Passport, a valid rabies injection, and a micochip. If the passport gets lost or has not been properly updated, a Vet can correct the status in a matter of minutes. Cats and other pets are excluded from this mandatory registration. This is a municipal ordinance, that means, the dog must be registered at the Town Hall where it is actually living. For example, a dog living in El Altet or Arenales del Sol, must be registered at Elche Town Hall instead. There is another law (Law 50/1999) which refers specifically to potentially dangerous pets (not only dogs), and specifies that, apart from registration,

the owner, who must be over 18, must have an Administrative License, which can be obtained at the Town Hall where the owner lives (even if the animal lives in a different town). For obtaining this License, apart from having the dog properly microchipped and vaccinated, the owner must pass a psychotechnical check (similar to the ones for diving and having weapons), and have a Certificado de Penales (where they certicate you haven´t commited any crime). In the case of Santa Pola Town Hall, you must go to the 2nd floor, to Negociado de Sanidad, and provide them with all these documents. Here is the official list of dangerous dog breeds: - American Staffordshire Terrier - Staffordshire Bull Terrier (shame on this, we all know Staffies are not dangerous, but the law is the law..) - Perro de presa mallorquin (Balearic Bulldog) - Fila Brasileño (Brazilian Mastiff) - Pero de presa canario (Canarian Catch Dog) - Bullmastiff - American Pitbull Terrier - Rottweiler - Bull Terrier - Dogo de Burdeos (French Mastiff) - Japanese Tosa Inu - Dogo Argentino (Argentinian Mastiff) - Dobermann - Mastin Napolitano (Neapoletan Mastiff) - Japanese Akita Inu
....and their crosses. But a Town Hall may also consider as dangerous dogs all those weighing over 20kg and with a wide chest and powerful jaws. Having a dangerous dog also implies putting a warning sign (beware of the dog), in a visible place, and building a fence enough for stopping the dog from jumping, and wide enough for stopping the dog from leaning its head out (and for stopping people inserting an arm inside)
carry them out. But, of course, the Town Hall is also obliged to make everybody carry them out, so, we can tell the Town Hall to do something in case of a dangerous dog running free or terrorizing the neighbourhood.
