Hello Everyone, Welcome to our October edition, Our camera is nearly worn out this month. Pictures for you throughout this edition. It was lovely to be able to go into the new school and see the kids all seemingly happy in their posh new surroundings. We hope they will all enjoy it. We were also at the Town Hall for the bowls announcement, in fact, all in all, a busy month for us. Santa Pola fiestas went off in their usual grand style. We have included photos from the Moors & Christian parade. It was hard to know what to leave out. With so many people now reading our magazine on the internet, mostly from the UK, we like to provide plenty of pictures. We have the start of a new beauty column this month, plus another on learning the Spanish language. Have a good month

Nu Skin Galvanic Spa Treatments at TopTone Many people have been asking us ‘What exactly is a Galvanic Spa?’ The Nu Skin Galvanic Spa is a small hand held machine that uses a harmless low-level electrical (galvanic) current to cleanse and infuse beneficial products into the skin. Galvanic machines have been safely used for over 50 years but before now they have been large and very expensive. Treatments are very reasonably priced and the machines themselves affordable, therefore, you can choose a treatment at the Salon or in the privacy of your own home. The Galvanic Spa’s low level electrical current deep cleanses the skin and infuses moisture and beneficial products into the deep layers of the skin. Conditions such as acne and psoriasis can be greatly improved. Unlike some other beauty treatment a Nu Skin treatment is non-invasive, pain free and very affordable. So …… • You will not feel a thing • Your skin will appear visibly younger after just 1 treatment • The current carries on working for up to 24 hours so that you will look even better the next day • Your skin will look and feel tighter, smoother, lighter lifted and revitalised • It increases cellular energy and the production of collagen and elastin As well as revitalising the skin on your face you can also help eliminate cellulite and firm up skin on any part of your body, including your hands. There is also a separate treatment available to improve the condition of fine and thinning hair. If you have any more questions or wish to book an appointment please contact Val at the Salon on 966695067.

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news from the Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005.
The highlight of the month was the official opening of the new school. We have pictures in this edition. The parking situation is a problem outside the school when picking up and dropping off the children (just like in the UK). We have suggested using some of the adjacent land to provide a car park. All is not however, as simple as it seems!! The road at the moment is private, owned by the adjacent community. The council want to take it over and make it public....but....it seems the original builders have not put the road where it should have been. This is now in the hands of solicitors..so could take a while to sort out!!!! A couple of emails you will see in this edition, about the fouling of our urbanisation by dogs. We have suggested to the council if they can erect signs in various areas known to be a particular problem. A sign which tells the amount of the fine, if people are caught. Lets hope this is just a start in helping with the problem. The cost for the landscaping of the roundabout by the post office will be around 50,000 euro. We are assured this will look great and artificial grass will be used, so that the grass does not grow and look untidy.

photo: May 2005
Also, just off this roundabout there is an advertising sign, which stops pedestrians from seeing oncoming cars, when they step onto the crossing. We were asked to see if this sign could be moved as it is very dangerous. We have asked and hopefully this will happen soon. Work has started on the tree planting which we mentioned last month. From the Post Office, up the hill towards the Council Offices. The sports centre and the school are going to work together to provide facilities out of school hours. The Town Hall help to fund this in Santa Pola and are to do the same in Gran Alacant.

We mentioned in an earlier edition that there is to be a choir service at Plaza Mayor nearer Christmas. Last year the performance in La Marina, donated money for SAT NAV for their ambulance service. The same offer has been made this year to benefit the ambulance service of Santa Pola. So the proceeds are for a cause that could benefit us all. October 17th 18th 19th will see the Fiestas on Gran Alacant. Previous years we have only heard about this, after the event, so this year we can let you know what will happen. All times and schedules are at an early stage, so if you want to know something specific, just check first. Events will begin on Friday the 17th until the 19th of October. Hi everybody in Santa Pola or in the Costa Blanca.
Remember these are just approximate dates!
More fiestas in October.
There are also local fiestas in Jalon , Polop or pilgrimages like the well-known in Benejuzar “el Pilar” on the 12th. Do not forget the fiestas held in Gran Alacant as well as the Volvo Ocean Race in Alicante.
Anyway you can still show your friends and relatives the parades in: Crevillent , Rafal , Planes , Callosa d’en Sarria, Campello and Calpe .
That’s all for now. The Winery (below) and Spicy Paradise (opposite) are both at the end of the road that holds the Gran Alacant Thursday market. (see the map at the back of this magazine) The Winery holds all of our excess magazines,

Lessons of the Month
QUALIFIED CHEF/COOK WANTED 664 277 986
Lesson (beginners): If you have just started to learn about Spanish verbs (or youʼve been learning for a while, and it just doesnʼt seem to be going in), here are a few tips to try and help you get to grips with them: 1. Try not to worry about it too much. Aside from the fact that worrying about it isnʼt going to help (do I sound like your Mother?!), itʼs worth pointing out that many of the verbs that are the most irregular are also the ones that are the most commonly used, so youʼll run across those verbs more often and use them more often. For example, ʻfuiʼ is one past tense that you will probably use all the time, to mean ʻI wentʼ. Most of my students start most stories off with this verb, and it is possibly the most irregular verb! 2. Remember the many of the verbs are irregular according to regular patterns. For example, you have the stem-changing verbs in the present tense, that follow a set pattern. Then you have that group of irregular preterites that include ʻdecirʼ, ʻhacerʼ, ʻtenerʼ etc. that also have their own pattern. 3. Remember that some verb forms are based on others. Most notably, most verbs that are irregular in the future tense are irregular in the same way in the conditional form. For example, decir becomes diría in the first-person conditional and diré in the first-person future. In addition, once you have learned ʻtenerʼ, for example, you have also learned ʻmantenerʼ, ʻcontenerʼ, ʻobtenerʼ, ʻretenerʼ, ʻsostenerʼ, and ʻdetenerʼ. 4. Finally, pay attention to the way the letters are pronounced, because some verbs are irregular only in their spelling. Thus sacar becomes saqué in the first-person preterite, because if it were spelled regularly it would be pronounced incorrectly.
Matthew Brock is a professional language teacher and the teacher on our online SLS video courses at www.spanishlanguagesite.com.

Morris, an 82 year-old man, went to the doctor to get a physical. A few days later, the doctor saw Morris walking down the street with a gorgeous young woman on his arm. A couple of days later, the doctor spoke to Morris and said, 'You're really doing great, aren't you?' Morris replied, 'Just doing what you said, Doc: 'Get a hot mamma and be cheerful.'' The doctor said, 'I didn't say that. I said, 'You've got a heart murmur; be careful.'
The difference between interest only mortgages and repayment mortgages This month I have been asked to clarify the difference between interest only and repayment mortgages. An interest only mortgage is where you borrow eg €50,000 over an agreed term with a lender and each month you pay them interest on that loan. The amount you borrowed remains the same until the end of the agreed term and then it is due for repayment. A repayment mortgage is similar to the interest only mortgage but instead of just paying interest on the loan, you are in fact paying back part of the amount you borrowed as well each month. At the end of the agreed term, providing you have made all of the payments on time, you owe the lender nothing. The question….. Why would I want an interest only mortgage over a repayment mortgage? There a few reasons why : • The monthly repayments are cheaper. This is especially important for some as especially older applicants are given reduced mortgage periods. EG borrowing €50,000 over 25 years on a repayment basis would cost approx €300 as opposed to 10 years it would cost €550 on interest only it would be approx €240 and some lenders will lend up to age 80. • For property owners who are non fiscal residents here in Spain, by keeping the mortgage as high as affordable, reduces the inheritance tax liability should something happen as the tax can only be levied on the equity minus the mortgage amount. • It gives you more disposable income each month making set incomes go further each month. Also don’t forget, as a fiscal resident of Spain, if you take a mortgage out when you purchase your home, you are entitled to tax relief on your mortgage payments against your income tax in Spain. A bit like the old MIRAS scheme we used to have in the UK before it was axed…. Mortgages are not for everyone and advice should always be tailored to the individual, above is just a brief explanation of the main differences between the repayment methods and a few reasons why people make different choices.

What Do Retired People Do All Day?
Working people frequently ask retired people what they do to make their days interesting. Well, for example, the other day my wife and I went into town and went into a shop. We were only in there for about 5 minutes. When we came out, there was a policeman writing out a parking ticket. We went up to him and said, 'Come on man, how about giving a senior citizen a break?' He ignored us and continued writing the ticket. I called him a Nazi turd. He glared at me and started writing another ticket for having worn tyres. So my wife called him a sh*t-head. He finished the second ticket and put it on the windshield with the first. Then he started writing a third ticket. This went on for about 20 minutes. The more we abused him, the more tickets he wrote. Personally, we didn't care. We came into town by bus. We try to have a little fun each day now that we're retired. It's important at our age.

Welcome to the monthly computing column brought to you by Dave the Computerman (MCSE)
Dave The Computerman.
Laptop Battery care Modern laptop batteries are of the lithium-ion variety, which do not suffer from the memory effect of the old-fashioned nickel-cadmium type, (whereby batteries lose their maximum capacity if they aren´t fully discharged). No battery will last forever, either. The biggest effect on battery life is temperature. If the bottom of your laptop is hot, the life of the battery is shortening. If you need the battery to run without being plugged in, then the cooler you can keep a laptop, the longer the battery will last. It is possible to buy a laptop cooler pad with fans fitted to keep the underside cool. These usually plug into a spare USB port. A cheaper method is to cut two wine corks in half and blutack or glue these to the bottom of the laptop to allow air to circulate around the bottom of the laptop. Any battery that has had a heavy fall should be removed and replaced. If the battery shorts or the internals are broken, heat can build up and can even cause the battery to catch fire. If you need to put your battery in storage, specialists recommend keeping the battery just above freezing, by placing it in a plastic bag and keeping it in the fridge, never in the freezer. They also recommend it only be charged to 40% of its capacity. Internet Searching Be as specific as possible with your chosen words. When you type in a phrase, the top results will contain the whole phrase, with lower results containing all the words entered. You can eliminate the latter by enclosing the phrase in double quotes. You can also use special words, AND, OR and NOT in capital letters. Searching using AND in a phrase will only return results that have all the words in it. If you want all instances of Leeds, but not in Yorkshire, type Leeds NOT Yorkshire and you will narrow the search down. A lot of search returns will inevitably be in the USA, but to only see UK results type in the phrase then leave a space before typing in site:co.uk If you know the website but wish to be more specific in the search bar type inurl:amazon Harry Potter to return a specific search. It is possible to add search engines to your web browser, by clicking on the manage search engines in Firefox you can have up to 20, Internet Explorer has far fewer and click on the Find more providers button. Safari has few providers. Clusty.com combines results from multiple search engines and sorts the results in clusters. A Set of tabs on the left of the results lets you sort by topic, source or sites. UK TV Anyone? Are you missing UK TV whilst Span and Telemicro squabble? Need a quick fix of popular shows? Head on over to www.britbox.co.uk and you can watch Coronation Street, Eastenders, Emmerdale, the X Factor, and for the guys, Top Gear. The sight even has backdated copies of each of the series for you to catch up on. You will of course need a broadband connection to watch live, but for dialup users it is possible to download the programmes and watch them when the download completes. The sight is FREE to se as well. If you need a sports fix, for £9 per annum you can watch live rugby (www.watchliverugby.com) and there is also live F1, Bike racing and soccer to be found online, I am sure you can work out the webaddress! I hope that you find the column useful and if you have any further questions, or need assistance please call me on 637 554579 or contact me at gacomputerman@yahoo.es

The
entertainment SCENE in and around
gran alacant What with winning the European Football Championships and Nedal taking the top prize at Wimbledon, it seems that Spain has the Midas touch of late. So the saying 'money to money' definitely rings true as this year's Volvo Ocean Race commences in the port of Alicante. Formerly named the Whitbread Ocean Race, current sponsors Volvo have a sixty plus management team. Their job includes assisting a t.v. crew that shoots a thirty-nine hour weekly documentary which can be viewed on the website www.VolvoOceanRace.tv. Held every three years, the current 2008-2009 event has eight big named teams. Sponsors like Telefonica, Ericcson and Puma employ upto fifty professional people including the most experienced sailors in a bid to succeed. The race truly is a worldwide adventure stopping at another ten major ports (See map schedule) before the final leg concludes in St Petersburg, Russia. After a big public attendance to the opening ceremony on Saturday September the 20th, it is predicted that a million plus spectators will visit the
port from now until the race departure date on October the 11th. In port races are to be held at most of the stops and Alicante's in port race takes place on October 4th. The port of Alicante has a wide selection of eateries, trendy bars and clubs. A competitors 'Village' has also been set up so the area will definitely be buzzing over the next few weeks. My plan is to go along when the action starts, mingle with the big players and head off around the world whilst earning a salary compared to a footballer. Failing that, you will probably be reading another article by me in November. For more info visit www.volvooceanrace.org

The Gran Alacant magazine would like to welcome Dott Ure, beauty therapist from Time for “Me” Therapies as our new beauty columnist.
Dott has been working in Gran Alacant for just over 15months. She originates from bonny Scotland where she completed Diplomas in Anatomy and Physiology and Swedish Holistic Massage. Dott is a qualified in Facial and Body Treatments, Manicures and Pedicures, Eyebrow, Eyelash Tinting and Perming and Hopi Ear Candling.
Now a Word from Dott herself. Hi everyone, Iʼm really excited to be starting my new column in the Gran Alacant Advertiser. My aim is to cover therapies and treatments that I perform and answer any beauty queries you may have. This month I thought I would talk about the very first treatment that I qualified in, that of Sugaring. The Art of SUGARING was developed in North Africa and Asia. It is an Ancient and traditional form of removing unwanted hair from the hair follicle using a natural paste, namely sugar paste. As the name suggests it is made up of sugar, vitamin E Lemon juice and water, which is mixed up to form a paste. The Zahra Organization, taking the old recipes, developed them to give a natural refined product which can be used more efficiently. There are no chemicals in this product therefore, kinder to the skin than wax. Sugar can be used in all areas of the body. Large areas such as legs and arms are done by hand. New clients are fascinated by this experience. Delicate areas around the bikini line or gentlemanʼsʼ ears are done by using strips. The advantages of Sugaring are that the treatment removes the entire hair so that regrowth is slow and the skin is soft. No more stubble. Clients who have regular treatments observe a diminishment of hair growth. Dark hair lightens in colour with regular treatments. Next month I will give you information on Hopi Ear Candling. If you are a member of a club and you would like me to give a talk or demonstration on any beauty treatment please call the salon (see advert below)

BLOOD TESTS: THE MYSTERY UNVEILED part 1 see part 2 next month Probably your Vet has tested your pet’s blood several times, for example to make sure everything is ok previous to a surgery, or maybe to find out what’s wrong when he is ill, and sometimes the results may be a bit difficult to understand, so we are going to try in this article, to explain, in an easy way, what do those results mean. First of all, there are three major kinds of tests: haematology, which evaluates the cells the blood is made of; biochemistry, which evaluates the condition of the organs through some measurable metabolic substances; and serology, for detecting antigens or antibodies against certain diseases. Normally every test requires a different kind of sample, that’s because the Vet will deposit the blood in different coloured test tubes. -HAEMATOLOGY: Haematological tests consist on counting the different kinds of cells the solid part of the blood is made of, which are mostly red blood cells (RBC), white blood cells (WBC), and platelets (PLT), and the results are normally expressed by percentages or absolute values. Through haematological results we will discover if the animal suffers from anaemia, infections, leukaemia, problems with bone marrow, etc. -RBC will tell us if there is an anaemia (too low number. A too high number is very uncommon, and may mean dehydration or maybe that the dog has had some kind of dope from le Tour de France…). -WBC are the “soldiers” of the immunity, and there are different kinds of cells: eosynophils, neutrophils, basophils, lymphocytes and monocytes, and considering the number and percentage of all of them, we can find out if the animal is suffering an infection, if it is an acute or chronic one, and also if it is a bacterial, viral or parasitic one. We can also make a diagnosis of an allergic process, or even a leukaemia, based on studying WBC. -PLT are the “tiles” of blood coagulation. They seal the holes at the blood vessels, and their alterations may mean coagulation problems (haemophilia, anti-rodents poisoning), or some blood parasitic diseases (see “tick transmitted diseases” in other
64
articles). Together with haematological tests, is very common evaluating also total serum protein (PT), which will tell us, for example, the degree of hydration of the animal and some other things (dehydrated, mosquito disease or some tumour=higher than normal; serious liver disease or some other tumours=lower than normal). For performing a right haematological test, apart from having the blood tested automatically by an electronic blood cell counter, the Vet will have a look by microscope to the blood sample, in order to confirm the results given by the machine, and also for searching for abnormal blood cells (immature or tumoral ones), blood parasites (such as the famous heartworm!), or any other wrong thing impossible to detect by the machine. -CLINICAL BIOCHEMISTRY: they will evaluate the blood levels of certain substances related to some internal organs, because these substances are produced by them, or maybe because the organ is highly involved with the metabolism of the substance. Probably the most well known one is blood glucose test, which is performed for example when we are suspecting diabetes. Another organs we can evaluate by biochemical tests are: -Liver: if there is an inflammation (hepatitis), or maybe if it’s not working well (hepatic failure, cirrhosis), the most commonly performed test are the transaminases: aspartate transaminase (AST or GOT) and alanine transaminase (ALT or GPT), for evaluating the condition of the liver, bilirubin (BIL) and bile acids for evaluating hepatic function, and alkaline phosphatase (ALKP) for the gall bladder.

SEEN ON GA.... more creepy crawlies... It is a Buthus occitanus (it's a small chance for it being a Buthus ibericus, but it does not matter regarding the information below). This species is toxic, but it's not regarded dangerous for healthy people. A sting is usually very painful, but it does not spread. it's not reported any deaths associated to this species. Small children can develop more powerful symptoms, and you should be extra careful when a little children is stung. This species does not normally enter houses, so this visit is random. The house is either located out in the nature in an area where there is scorpions (they like it best in the middle of nowhere with very little vegetation and a lot of rocks), or it has travelled with some kind of delivery. You might want to check the area for more scorpions if the area is "scorpion friendly". You can read more about european scorpions here http://www.ub.ntnu.no/scorpion-files/ european_scorp.php

Named for the prayer like stance, the Mantis is derived from the Greek word “mantis for prophet or fortune. The worlds largest was recorded at 18” long, which is 45cm, in Southern China in 1929. They are carnivorous and eat other insects. Larger ones consume small reptiles and even small mammals or birds. Their natural life span in the wild is 10 to 12 months.

“Hi I live on Altomar 1 & I see in your magazine they`re going to put in the park. Is that by the wasteground after the post office? It`ll just be another place for lazy people to let their dogs mess anywhere & leave it there. I can`t tel you how revolting the smell has been, if it`s hot it stinks, if it rains it stinks & if it`s windy it stinks! We watch people just walk their dogs opposite the BBVA let them mess & just walk away. Most of whom have bags tied to the leads. I think it`s disgusting & they should be fined..... heavily. If they think there`s nothing wrong with it they should let them mess outside their own houses. Who could disagree with these emails sent to us at the magazine.. Apparently quite an aroma is being endured by many on GA. As you will see on our news page, a first step is being made. Unfortunately the police would have to be standing in the right place at the right time, to catch the culprits. Is it time to name and shame.

In Augustʼs edition of the mag, a piece was published about improvements being made to the environment of GA, something which I am sure we are all concerned about. One of the topics mentioned was the fact that Councillor Javier Baile is implementing fines for owners whose dogs are caught or reported fouling public areas. Everytime I walk the pavements of GA I am disgusted at the amount of dog mess. I cannot understand the mentality of owners who fail to clear up after their pets. After all it doesnʼt take a great deal for owners to carry a small plastic bag with them; we see it all the time in the UK. The council have recognised this problem but I think it is up to each and everyone of us to tackle this issue. So if we see someone failing to clear up after their dog, we should make our feelings known about this horrible, unhygienic and anti-social practice. Lets make the pavements of GA a clean and pleasant place to walk!
