JUST A NOTE: We do provide all of our advertisers with FREE design work and therefore ask that this work not be supplied and used by other publications.
Hello and welcome to our September issue. With our local printer shutting down for two weeks holiday, we have only had a short lead time to produce this edition. By now we suppose many of the holidaymakers will have gone home and it will soon be back to school for the children, although thankfully out here there will still be plenty of sun and warm weather to enjoy, also no queuing to get into Santa Pola along the N332. We even had a welcome break in the hot weather in August with a couple of days of rain showers and thunder, at least it freshened everywhere up. As you will see on the tourist information page, the Santa Pola Fiesta has started, from the Moors arriving on the beach to the mock battles with the Christians. Musical processions, Rowing Regetta, Billiards competition, Quail Shooting, Beer Bath, Caldero making competition, Radio Controlled Boats and much more, plus the brilliant firework displays. On the 3rd September is the Wonderful Moors and Christians parade and on the 7th September the Floral Offering to Our Lady the Virgin de Loreto in the Castle Chapel both something well worth watching. Just check the full program on pages 52/53. Have a good month. Sandra and Barry

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news, including that from the Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005. Two massive events on the September calendar.
The Santa Pola mixed bowls event, with players from all over europe, takes place during September at the Gran Alacant Monte Mar Bowls Club. More info elsewhere in this edition. The Santa Pola Fiestas during the month which includes the Moors and Christians parade. The complete itinerary is on the tourist information page. Next year, yes, next year, we are to get together with Loreto and pick out events during the fiestas, where buses will be arranged to take you into Santa Pola for all of the special events.
You will see an email in this edition about the problems again with rubbish. Another email with pictures have also been given to Loreto. She will meet with the complainants involved and visit these areas, where it is hoped that action can take place to help these situations.

We asked what will happen to the present Medical Centre building when the new Medical Centre is built. More amenities will move in from Santa Pola, to provide us with even more facilities on the old site.
The two recent bush fires on Gran Alacant, in the area behind the Life Resort, are looked upon as deliberately started. If anyone
has seen anything suspicious, please telephone the police, who have brought in help in the way of the Seprona, to investigate the situation. Please, also, if you see anything out of the ordinary in the future, phone the police, who are now interviewing neighbours in the area who may be able to help with their enquiries. Pictures are from the Spanish newspaper “Periòdico Santa Pola. The two fires ten days apart were both in the area of Montefaro. The wind extended it to many trees and scrub. It involved police, the fireservice, helicopters and planes, all trying

The Association of European Residents (ASVEGA) provided a surprise presentation to our Councillor, Loreto Cascales at a meeting at the GA bowls club for her dedication to helping Gran Alacant. An updated picture for all of you who read the magazine online of
the newly landscaped roundabout near to the GA school. As you will see elsewhere in this edition, so many people are now reading the magazine online, that we like to keep printing updated pictures of improvements being made.
Dignitaries were at the new landscaped roundabout in Santa Pola. The one down from the McDonalds roundabout, towards the town. The work symbolizes the Wind and creates a marine atmosphere with the close historical relationship between the town and the sea. The fountain has a circuit of ten cycles. It has been inaugurated officially by the president of the Provincial Delegation, Jose Joaquin Ripoll, and the Mayor Miguel Zaragozza.
Another area on Gran Alacant which has been in the past, a topic of much discussion.

There is a very untidy area of land as you go down the hill to the beach from the Post Office towards the Farmacia and on down the hill to the beach. It is a MASA builder owned area, ear
marked for housing before the recession hit everyone. In meetings with Loreto, she has been trying to get the builder to tidy up this area of land, including dismantling their sales hut. Work has now started.
We have pictures of the new road from Santa Pola to Elche. This has been the works of the Valencian Government. Part of the new road from Santa Pola to Elche has finally opened as a dual carriageway. The chief of the main directorate of Highways, Ismael Ferrer, and the Mayor of Santa Pola, Miguel Zaragozza, took away the symbolic cones to open the new stretch of road The work of deployment and

creation of two new roundabouts and a section of dual carriageway has a budget of 1.958.317, 43 euros, and is the continuation of the first stage built in 2,005 to continue the dualling with lighting and a pathway of 1.50
mtrs width on the right hand side and a cycle-pedestrian track of 3.50 mtrs on the left one. The work will be started again in the middle of September, once the Santa Pola fiestas have been completed. We mentioned the terribly dangerous turning off the N332 into Santa Pola and the very bad exits off Gran Alacant. These both come under the durastriction of the National Government who have repeatedly been asked to look into these terrible black spots.

Gran Alacant Fie
For the first time since these fiestas were introduced, we had an official opening ceremoney, with speeches from our Mayor, Miquel Zaragoza. Gran Alacant Concillor, Loreto Cascales and Mª Jesús Pazos, President of “Asvega”.
All manner of events were put on for children and adults. For the first time, a UK group performed for us, a brilliant routine from the people at MABS, the Cancer Support Group on Gran Alacant. The opening dance was perfect, a tribute to Spains winning of the World Cup.

On the domestic front the club has recently finished the summer Sunset League. This evening league took place over ten weeks and finished on August 3rd. It was a very exciting league and any one of three teams could have won right up to the last game. In the end the team of Lynne Armitage, Bill Clifton, Chris Merry and Dave Melville won by two points from their nearest rivals. The teams who came second and third both battled each other on the last day which made it even more exciting. Thanks go to all those who took part over the series including the substitutes.

Two Men, Gran Alacant and a Rover 400 (part three)
Taking over the driving and the Spanish/french border we were to receive news that would threaten the whole trip ...Derek (hollis) on the Gran Alacant plaza (a local forum ) had posted about sharing a car back to England only to be told that it is in fact against the law for a British national to drive a Spanish registered car in the U.K.....prior to leaving I had checked and double checked with my insurer that the trip would be legal....What the hell was going on? Who was right and Who was wrong?......Was there any way out of this situation?
Well while waiting at a motorway station close to the french border the news came through that in fact we could proceed with our journey.....although Mike did say he was less than happy to proceed unless I sorted my fricken ring tone out....why could we proceed? Well it turns out my insurance company were correct, I could indeed drive a Spanish plated car in the United Kingdom due to the fact that I have employment in a E.U state other than the United Kingdom........well the French/Spanish border lay before us and as we climbed towards it the countryside was green and lush.....expecting to be stopped we collected our passports together and turned my phone onto silent (I just knew it would ring if I didn始t) only to be waved through by border control. Our target for the first day was 600 miles and that was within our grasp....our aim was to turn up towards Toulouse and stop for the night....this went out the window I始m afraid with our inability to actually take the Toulouse turn off ( it helps when navigating around Europe or anywhere for that matter to actually take a turn off when required rather than watch it pass you by )....well we headed towards Montpellier.....I settled Mike down by claiming I had a back up plan..and I did (the map ).
I glanced across to Mike who seemed to have become a little agitated by my frantic attempts to find another route...he need not have worried "its all in hand we can miss Montpellier out " I said ...I could see Mike was thinking .."you mean like we missed Toulouse out " .......I treated his quip with the contempt it deserved ..after all he was driving and he missed the turn off ( stands to reason)
Well we turned off north towards Millau and satisfied we were on the right road stopped off for a McDonalds ...the children were happy with this as you can guess .....but this turned out not to be one of our best moments; Mike始s Spanish is poor ( not as poor as mine ) but still poor...so helping each other out we ordered our meals in Spanish ( in France ) Pauline who was getting hungry at this stage stepped in and saved the day firstly by pointing out that we were in the wrong country and then placing the order by pointing at the menu boards ( handy trick that...pointing at the menu boards )

Your Duck is Dead--
A woman brought a very limp duck into a veterinary surgeon. As she laid her pet on the table, the vet pulled out his stethoscope and listened to
the bird's chest. After a moment or two, the vet shook his head and sadly
said, "I'm sorry, your duck, Cuddles, has passed away." The distressed woman
wailed, "Are you sure?" "Yes, I am sure. Your duck is dead," replied the vet.. "How
can you be so sure?" she protested. "I mean you haven't done any testing on him or
anything. He might just be in a coma or something." The vet rolled his eyes, turned around and left the room. He returned a few minutes later with a black Labrador
Retriever. As the duck's owner looked on in amazement, the dog stood on his hind legs,
put his front paws on the examination table and sniffed the duck from top to bottom. He then looked up at the vet with sad eyes and shook his head. The vet patted the dog on
the head and took it out of the room. A few minutes later he returned with a cat. The cat
jumped on the table and also delicately sniffed the bird from head to foot. The cat sat
back on its haunches, shook its head, meowed softly and strolled out of the room.
The vet looked at the woman and said, "I'm sorry, but as I said, this is most definitely,
100% certifiably, a dead duck." The vet turned to his computer terminal, hit a few keys
and produced a bill, which he handed to the woman.. The duck's owner, still in shock, took the bill. "$150!" she cried, "$150 just to tell me my duck is dead!"
26
The vet shrugged, "I'm sorry. If you had just taken my word for it, the bill would have been $20, but with the Lab Report and the Cat Scan, it's now $150."

For Adoption This 5 month old German Shepherd puppy was found with another dog in the middle of a main road dodging cars that were passing very close and not slowing down. We were called out to the scene and we rescued them. We took them to the vet clinic for examination. They were both covered in tics and fleas, an indication that they had wandering in the fields for many days under the hot Spanish sun before they were rescued. They remained in the animal hospital for a day to receive treatment for the infestation. The German Shepherd is very thin, a little timid but a very friendly boy and also very appealing, we have named him Fraser and the other one is called Filipe. These 2 large Spanish puppies were found inside a Basura bin in the middle of Spanish summer day by a man walking his dogs in the country. Thankfully, his own dogs brought his attention to their plight by crying at the bin. The puppies were extremely hot and dehydrated and they would not have survived another hour in there, they are just 12weeks old. Both are female and although at first they were very weak and traumatised they spent a day in the animal hospital and have fully recovered from their ordeal. They are now in a temporary foster home, we have named them Raquel and Roxy.
Tara is a beautiful long haired black cat that a lady found outside her house. She is currently caring for her but she is returning to the UK soon and so we must find her a new a home. Tara is very sociable, she likes a cuddle and is used to being in a house. We believe that she is about 5 years old. Tara has been spayed.
Harvey the 1 year Dalmation was found on the outskirts of an urbanisation at the side of a main road. After examination by our vet she told us that he was probably hit by a car because he had a hairline fracture in his left leg, he also had a bruised left eye and he had bitten his tongue, injuries consistent with a collision with a vehicle. He is receiving treatment for this and it is hoped that he will make as full recovery. He is a lovely boy.

While walking along the pavement in front of his church, our minister heard the intoning of a prayer that nearly made his collar wilt. Apparently, his 5 year-old son and his playmates had found a dead robin. Feeling that proper burial should be performed, they had secured a small box and cotton batting, then dug a hole and made ready for the disposal of the deceased. The minister's son was chosen to say the appropriate prayers and with sonorous dignity intoned his version of what he thought his father always said: 'Glory be unto the Father, and unto the Son, and into the hole he goooes.' (I want this line used at my funeral!)

M.A.B.S. and the fiesta. On the 23rd of July the M.A.B.S. fundraising were delighted to take part in one of Spain's wonderful fiestas which was held on a huge stage in front of the medical centre. We were asked by Loreto if we could put on a half hour show on behalf of M.A.B.S. which is the only legal Cancer charity in Gran Alacant. Considering the temperature and in spite of a few technicalities the whole team did as always a magnificent job. The march of the toreador's, all that jazz and the French can can got the audience stamping their feet and clapping their hands to the beat of the music. Jean the chief fundraiser would like to thank the very talented Kevin Tierney as Mr BO jangles, the effervescent Rochelle Tierney, the great voice of Bill Hodges, the gorgeous Alicante babes, dancers Sharon, Sydney and Megan, not for getting the outrageous Rollie's Lin, Chris, Sylvie and jean. We would like to thank Loreto for all her help and support and will be looking forward to working with her in the near future to make M.A.B.S. even more able to assist people. We would like to thank Terry, Aidan, Lynda and Ann for the sponsored leg and chest shave which raised 227 euros on Saturday the 24th of July. Many thanks to all the customers who donated to this very worth while charity, also to our lovely Barry and Sandra who are always there to take photos of us doing the most stupid things. Don't forget the support group is only a phone call away. Jan 966697754

It was the end of the day when I parked my police van in front of the station.
As I gathered my equipment, my K-9 partner, Jake, was barking, and I saw a little boy staring in at me. 'Is that a dog you got back there?' he asked. 'It sure is,' I replied. Puzzled, the boy looked at me and then towards the back of the van. Finally he said, 'What'd he do wrong?'

PANIC AT THE ZOO
62
Our profession has lots of different job options: small animals practice, sanitary inspection, horses, farms, and exotic animals, including wildlife recovering centres, and zoos. I know there are some people who think zoos are a kind of prisons for animals; I’ve even seen encaged animals which were been exhibited in zoos and pet shop, and also animals which are treated like prisoners. But I’m sure a modern zoo is mainly a place for education and scientific research and a “factory” which produces animal lovers, and stimulates in children and adults the interest for knowing and protecting fauna and ecosystems. A good zoo cannot be compared to a theme park with animals. When I was studying 4th course of my career, I was a student trainee at one of the most important zoos in Spain: the one in Jerez (yes, where the famous Sherry wine is coming from!), for 2 months, during the summer. I learned lots of things there, and I discovered exotic animals (nothing about them was explained to us at the Vet school), and the most important: local wildlife recovering tasks, because Jerez zoo has some additional facilities in which injured or endangered autochthonous animals were looked after and bred. That summer there were 2 Vets and 2 student trainees, so we helped in most tasks: inspection of the facilities, sample collection, forced feeding the ill animals, etc. One of the tasks I developed from the first day was attending a couple of tapirs (Tapirus terrestris) and their 2 months old baby. Tapirs are Amazonian mammals which look like giant pigs, and spend 50%
of their time in the water. Despite they weigh 500-600 pounds, they are herbivorous, calm and friendly, and they love having their back and face scratched. That couple was fully adapted to captivity, and they used to have babies every year. Babies look like young wild boars, brown colored with white stripes at the back. That one weighed 20 kg. Every morning we got into the facility (100-200 m2 with a swimming pool and a small pen for treating their mosquito bites and spraying some insects repellent on them) at approximately 9:00h, when they had their breakfast served at the swimming pool, so, while they smashed with their powerful mouth apples and tomatoes, we treated their skin problems and scratched their backs, day after day. But then time for microchipping the baby arrived, because he was going to be sent to other zoo, after a long bureaucratic procedure (do you remember pet passport?). There is an European zoo network whose members exchange material, knowledge and animals, which are not sold in any way, but sent to start some new “couples” or “groups”. If not done like this, after some years, the number of animals living together would be so high that peaceful coexistence would be impossible. Treating the skin problems was usually done by the students, but microchipping had to be done by an authorized Vet, so that day we all (2 students plus 2 Vets) got into the tapirs enclosure. I started, like any other day, to clean the skin wounds of the adults while they had breakfast, and the two Vets and the other student took the baby to the pen for microchipping him. A few seconds later, the female realized her baby was gone and started to look around
her trying to locate the baby, moving her ears backwards, and getting more and more nervous. Just in case, I started moving towards the gate slowly. All of a sudden, the baby started crying loudly, like piglets do. His voice sounded amplified, because the pen had a “resonance box” effect. The female ran towards and around the pen, trying desperately to find her baby, and when she realized it was impossible for her to get into the pen, she looked at me. For one second I got petrified, but immediately I started the fastest race in my life towards the gate, which I managed to close after me, only a fraction of second before the female slammed her head on the gate, after galloping towards me like a rocket. The strong metallic fence trembled, just like me. That animal, which loved to be scratched by me day after day for one month, calm, peaceful, herbivorous,
suddenly turned into a savage beast when she heard her baby crying, and, If she would have had the chance, she would have crushed me. So, when somebody says: “it’s very nice, never bitten anybody”, I can’t help remembering the female tapir looking for her baby. After the microchipping, the baby came back to his parents, and the female recovered her tranquility. By the way, what was the male doing when everything happened? Just eating some tomatoes. WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge
WHAT'S THAT NOISE IN THE CLOT? It is said that Spain is one of the noisiest countries in the world. Much of this is down to the inhabitants, of course, and everyone will know at least one Spanish couple who can hold a conversation which would break several noise abatement bye-laws if they were in the UK. Also there are the fiestas, each one vying with the other to produce the loudest possible cacophony, culminating eventually in a fireworks show which will finish with the best ear-splitting bang the Ayuntiamento can buy. Even so, you can usually move away from such earache-inducing racket, and hope that eventually your tinnitus will clear itself. You settle gratefully into your peaceful bed at home, looking forward to a quiet night's sleep, and then it starts. Ker-tuck, ker-tuck, ker-tuck... If it was a pair of yowling cats, you could throw an old boot at them, but it isn't. It starts just after sunset, from April through to early September, and can go on and on and on all night.
64
Meet the culprit. This is the Red-necked Nightjar, a relative of the Common Nightjar which is found in the UK, and also here in Spain. The Common Nightjar has a similarly irritating song, which goes errrrrrrrrrr urrrrrrrrr all night long, like a car changing gear, but the ker-tuck of the Red-necked Nightjar is the one most likely to keep you awake. It's not confined to the Clot, either, you can also
hear them just about anywhere in Gran Alacant where there is open ground, particularly up near the lighthouse. The Spanish call it the Chotacabras Cuellirrojo, which means Red-necked Goatsucker, which I'm sure you will agree is a most peculiar thing to call a bird. Funnily enough, the old English name for the Nightjar is also Goatsucker, and it derives from the fact that when this bird opens its beak, it has the most enormous mouth and is often seen in the vicinity of livestock – at night. But it is not attacking farm animals of any description, just catching moths and other night-flying insects disturbed by the animal's passage. Of course, if you were a mediaeval English or Spanish peasant, and perhaps your goat had been a little dry of late, you might decide that the peculiarlooking bird you saw flying near your goat had something to do with the lack of milk being provided. Such a notion can take hold on an international level, and give a bird a bad reputation. Not that the Red-necked Nightjar needs one, of course, as many people just hate it for keeping them awake at night. See you next month
Genuine emails to our magazine A series of events and emails throughout the month, highlighting some peoples important problems, and how to get them sorted Hi Barry & Sandra,
I have just picked up your August addition, excellent as usual !!! I read with great interest the letters about rubbish & totally agree with their comments. I also notice you hope to make a appointment with Loreto to accompany these people to the sites they have concerns about. I wrote about the rubbish etc several months ago especially on the spare land belonging the counsel off Calle Malta & opposite our properties on Calle Chipre Bajo 26. I have been to the counsel office to complain but wasted my time, so I wondered if I may ask to be allowed to be added to your email list with Barbara Turnbull & Peter & Maggie Harris to meet with Loreto & show her my concerns. Not only the rubbish but because Calle Malta is a counsel owned road why have they stopped cleaning it ?( the road sweeper used to come down every morning, the same with Calle Chipre where the pool is. On Calle Malta you cannot walk on the pavement because the weeds etc are growing right over it, so you have to walk on the road. This also encourages people to use the land by it as a dumping ground. I think you too may have also noticed how much in decline the square is where the MASA offices used to be ? Litter bins do not get emptied they are always overflowing with rubbish strewn on the floor. WE have counted several weeks where the bins remain full. Also the area in the square is a disgrace, especially the pagoda which would look great, if it was looked after but the plant life is dead. The paving is in a poor state & the steps from the Super Value car park are dangerous to say the least. Who is responsible if someone gets injured through lack of maintenance? I could go on. But isn始t it a shame they spend money on areas that are in common view but other area out of site (except for people living there) just get left to rot. Come on Loreta we all pay our Suma tax lets have our share of care & maintenance .
Keep up the good work Barry & Sandra hope to hear from you soon regarding meeting Loreto. Bill and Pat
Hi Barry & Sandra, i have just returned from my meeting with Loreto. The meeting was fruitful as Loreto agreed to get in touch with the cleaning company straight away & ask them to clean up Calle Malta & Calle Chipre, also I have to call her if the company fail to keep those streets clean on a regular basis as they once did. She is also going to get the land by Calle Malta scraped removing all the weeds & rubbish at the same time, the same applies to the land opposite our property on Calle Chipre street 26. She disagreed saying this land had been scraped about a year ago & was quite aderment about it ,but I did ask if she would go ask the residents how long it was since it was scraped & tidied up I know she would have found it is at least 3 years since this land was maintained. But thats not important it what will now happen in the future. She has asked me to call her if things start to get in a bad state again . So I would say it was a very happy & fruitful meeting & once again I thank you for your help in arranging this meeting & would like to say thank you again for Loretas cooperation. I will let you know how things go as far as the clean up goes. I also mentioned about the state of the square where Saffron & Flannagans etc are, but

unfortunately this area is the responsibility of the owners of the businesses this includes the small litter bins & the state of the steps. So maybe I ought to do a letter to go into your magazine maybe shaming them into doing a bit of tidying up,after all it does benefit them too, maybe people might think about paying a visit then? If you want to use any of this to back up any emails about rubbish please feel free. regards Bill
Hi Barry & Sandra, here are some photos of Calle Malta showing how badly maintained it has become & some of the rubbish people throw there .The photos of the neat looking garden is opposite our house, Pat got fed up of people treating it as a tip, so with bit of help from Bert our neighbour & his rotavator, Pat put plenty of hard work with a rake & a hoe removing weeds & planting lots of plants even people on the street were asked to plant anything they wanted to make the area nice to look at. It has got better & better. So thanks to everyone who has helped, Karen, Bert & Pauline. Loreto promised to ask the company who scrape the land to make sure they left the garden area as it is & not touch it. regards Bill
