Hello everyone, We would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy and Healthy New Year and welcome you to our December edition. Where has this year gone? it is frightening just how fast time seems to be going. It has certainly been a very hard year for many people, lets hope that next year will see an improvement. We have still seen good things happening on Gran Alacant though this year. This Christmas Loreto was so pleased, she had been trying to get a Feliz Navidad sign across the road leading into Gran Alacant for years and this year she has succeeded, it really does look lovely and very welcoming. Look through the magazine this month for places that are advertising their Christmas Lunch also others where you can choose to celebrate the New Year. Our front cover robin picture was taken by our El Clot columnist Mark Etheridge from the Charco de Contacto hide which is the main pool in the Clot. Sandra and Barry

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news, including that from the Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005. We start in a round a bout way!!!!!!! With news of two roundabouts.
The roundabout near the school is hopefully to be officially opened by the Mayor on December 5th at noon, the same day as the “Big Street Party Council workmen have been busy building a low wall and clearing the high bank round the outside of the roundabout to give nicer views, where seating will be included in this area. This roundabout, as with the other two on Gran Alacant will have Christmas lighting installed. The entrance to Gran Alacant, for the first time, will also be lit up, to welcome visitors.
Talking of road working, the dual carriageway from Santa Pola, out towards Elche is now finished, complete with extra roundabouts, paths and cycleways. Pictured right at the inauguration is the Councillor of Infrastructure, Mario Flowers, with the Popular party Miquel Zaragozza and the Socialist, Alexander. Talks are still ongoing about the dangerous exits off Gran Alacant and the bad turning off the N332 into Santa Pola. A BIG STREET PARTY is to be held on Sunday the 5th December outside the Carabasi Bar Complex. Some of the

owners have got together, at their own expense, to put on this event, with proceeds going to the disadvantaged children of Nicaragua Loreto Cascales has arranged for the road to be closed, tables, chairs, and a stage will be provided for entertainment throughout the day, There will also be car boot stalls. Everybody welcome. Pictures in next months issue.
A Fashion Show in aid of the Alzheimers Association was due to have taken place on Sunday 28th November, at the Life Resort, whilst our magazine was at the printers. We hope to have pictures in our next issue. Various businesses have helped sponsor the event, which has been arranged by Ralph and Kate Jones.
We have a list in this issue of all of the festivities available in Santa Pola and on Gran Alacant, during the festive period. You will see that apart from Santa arriving outside the Gran Alacant Council offices, everything else will be taking place at the Life Resort, in collaboration with the Santa Pola Town Hall. This is the first year that such festivities have taken place on Gran Alacant and hopefully will now take place every year in the future.
The Town Hall has had meetings with the Alicante film studios to use different locations in the area in any future films they produce. This is hoped to help promote Santa Pola.

Do you have good clothes, toys, food etc, that you would like to
donate to the under privileged in Santa Pola and Gran Alacant? Maybe toys the kids are fed up with, clothes that are outgrown, you will be able to take them to the Life Resort, possibly on the 19th December, (watch out in case the date is changed), nearer the time.
The allotments have all now been allocated and those selected will be presented with their keys, at Santa Pola Town Hall at 10am on November 26th.
The second phase and the completing of the Gran Alacant Sports Hall will start soon, leading to this wonderful facility being available to us all.
An area, pointed out to us that has not been swept lately, where broken glass had been left lying around will be looked into and actioned by Loreto.
The pavements in front of the GA apartments, opposite Quicksave, are now being replaced and we asked if at the same time something could be done about the slippery pavements on the other side of the road. The other dangerous pavements outside the BBVA bank will hopefully also be sorted. Many of the 400 trees that were planted beside all the new paving along Av. Noruega and Av. Mediterraneo that are dying or dead will be replaced in the near future, in answer to one of our emails.
Where is our replacement police station? Again this is in hand and not SEE OVER PAGE

The attacked person was taken to the Medical Centre with a head injury and the attacker was taken to the Guardia Civil Station in Santa Pola.
A Moroccan male was arrested after trying to rob a car when the local Police noticed 3 people acting suspiciously along Carabasi, they were crouching down behind their car. When the Police stopped, two people ran off but the Police detained the third. After searching him they found an airplane ticket pertaining to another person, also clothing not belonging to him were found in his car.

MONTEMAR BOWLS AND SOCIAL CLUB (Sponsored by Supa Valu) On Saturday 13th November, we entertained a touring team from Tamworth Bowls Club and enjoyed an entertaining mornings bowling session. We did have some success, winning on five of the six rinks. But as usual, the opportunity to mix our team and to enjoy the camaraderie with our guests, were the most important ingredients. In conjunction with this match we held a Charity "tabletop sale" and raised nearly €850 for our club charities i.e. the Heart Foundation and Prostate Cancer. Thanks goes to all those who donated, and particularly to the ladies who worked so hard to make the event such a resounding success. Back to the leagues, and not such a success was our Picadors SABA Discovery league game on Monday 15th November, against San Miguel Comets where we were decisively beaten by the better team on the day. Our only success came from the trip of Mike Soars, Rita Towle and David Eades, although, Rowena Good, Bill Clifton and Ian Gibbons came close, losing by just one shot. Montemar Picadors TOTAL SHOTS FOR – 83 POINTS FOR – 2 Well played the Comets.
San Miguel Comets TOTAL SHOTS AGAINST –111 POINTS AGAINST – 12
Montemar Matadors, played host to the San Luis Lions in the SABA division A on Friday 19th November and fared slightly better than the Picadors. But despite being egged on by the sparse crowd of relatives and friends, the Matadors came second on four of the rinks and first on two. Well done to Rowena Good, June Young and skip David Eades and to Babs Caiger, Gordon Fisher and Skip Mike Farrelly. Montemar Matadors TOTAL SHOTS FOR – 74 POINTS FOR – 4 San Luis Lions TOTAL SHOTS AGAINST –118 POINTS AGAINST – 10 Well played the Lions. Montemar Matadors get chilled by by the blues! Another outstanding result for the Toreadors playing at home this week against Lemon Tree Leopards in the SABA Division C. A big shot difference of 134 to 70 and an overall win of 14 points to zero. We wait with anticipation to see if we have now topped the league in place of being second in the league last week. Well done to all six winning rinks for achieving a fantastic result. Please visit our web site at www.montemarbowls.com for more info about Monte Mar Bowls and Social Club. New members are always welcome.

On Christmas morning a policeman on horseback is sitting at a traffic light, and next to him is a kid on his shiny new bike. The policeman says to the kid, "Nice bike you got there. Did Santa bring that to you?" The kid says, "Yeah." The cop says, "Well, next year tell Santa to put a tail-light on that bike." The cop then proceeds to issue the kid a €20.00 bicycle safety violation ticket. The kid takes the ticket and before he rides off says, "By the way, that's a nice horse you got there. Did Santa bring that to you?" Humouring the kid, the p.c. says, "Yeah, he sure did."

MABS Interclub 5th Nov.2010. The Interclub took full advantage of Halloween to hold a special evening, especially as the local shops offered a wonderful selection of costumes and decorations. The Club has a varied programme which includes quizzes and dinner dances for each season which takes place at Ricardo’s Restaurant, Gran Alacant every Thursday evening and this particular Halloween we had a Murder Mystery. The Restaurant looked fantastic thanks to Ricardo and the Committee, with large hanging spiders, witches, skeletons, skulls and a Grand Table to complement a Grand Feast with lit-up pumpkin lanterns. This all helped toward the perfect ambience for a Spooky Castle Murder. Ten of the Club members took part and not only did they dress the part but the rest of the members joined in as witches, draculas and ghosts, as you can see from the photos it was a spectacle to behold. The resident ghost of Spooky Castle also made a couple of appearances. There was plenty of ad-libbing and clues to help solve the murder of Sue-Perr-Natrell the Producer of the team from the Really Haunted TV Show who were at Spooky Castle to catch sightings of the ghosts!!! The murderer Si Coe was unearthed! Caught, handcuffed and handed over to the Police. It was a very different, fun evening with a prize for the best-dressed character which was Lotta-Spooks the Castle Owner. Thanks to all who took part and dressed up for making it such a good evening. If you would like any more information regarding the Interclub please ring the President Bob Newby 966 697 439.

M.A.B.S. on GRAN ALACANT This year we have been quite busy, especially one of our translators who helps the ladies out if they want to go for a mammogram. Just to mention a few people, we helped a lady in Gran Alacant who had lung cancer providing transport to and from the hospital until other complications set in and sadly she died in September. Also a very elderly couple in Santa Pola it was the lady who needed a lot of support and transport to Elche Hospital and amazingly she is doing well now. We have been helping a gentleman in Valverde for almost a year with transport again to Elche for several courses of treatment, very sadly he also passed away the other week. A wonderfully positive lady has overcome so many obstacles, not to mention a double mastectomy, a reconstructing operation, other complications along the way but still going strong, and one of our translators who went with her on her first visit to Alicante Hospital, is still supporting her. We have helped with lending out equipment and
putting people in touch with other organisations if we cannot help. Thank you to all the Volunteers who have helped this year. LIST OF EQUIPMENT FOR HIREMABS GRAN ALACANT BRANCH. Bonnie was left behind when her owner returned to England. She is a medium size dog, a very gentle, tender and loving German Shepherd cross 4-5 years. She has Leishmaniosis, blood tests revealed that all her organs are very in good condition and so she is now receiving the best possible medication to help her recover from the effects of the disease which affected her skin. We had no foster home available and so Bonnie is in kennels. We really need someone to foster her to provide her with personal attention and help build up her confidence.
Bonny is a 4 year old beagle and was left behind by a man that returned to the UK, she has an appealing personality and is adorable.
Lote was found in an irrigation canal. An examination by the vet revealed that she had very recently given birth. We believe that the puppies had been thrown into the canal and that Lote was looking for them. She is very good with people but she is not keen on small dogs. Lote is approx 4 years.
Snap and Pop are now about 1 year old. They have shiny black coats, beautiful amber eyes and are both neutered and vaccinated.

Hello again, Here’s one for all the gorgeous Men and Golden Oldies in Gran Alacant and surrounding area’s. Male Skin. It is wrong to assume that there is a “Male” skin type as there are just as many variations, types and chacteristics of male skin as with female skin types. Due to hormonal differences between us there are some generalizations that can be made. Testosterone, the male hormone produced by male glands, gives men a thicker epidermis (the outer protective covering is approximately 2mm in men compared to1.5 in woman) Male skin tends to be tougher, more elastic and less sensitive than female skin. Men’s skin is more acidic and has a more efficient supple of blood and sebum. This means “wait for it girls” Men’s skin tends to age better than ours remaining softer and firmer. (don’t they just have all the luck!!!) However, men’s skin is as exposed if not more too environmental and life style conditions. Take for example Murphy of Sol Builders he spends hours exposed to UVA and UVB rays which can cause damage to his skin. Murphy knows the importance of keeping that fabulous body of his protected but using a high factor sun screen. Men need to take as much care of their skin on a daily basis, exfoliating mouisturising
and toning as well as a good facial are all important to keeping that youthful look. If you need assistance with the above please do not hesitate to call or pop into the salon. (all enquires confidential) Our Beautiful Golden Oldies. Mature skin looses it’s firmness and suppleness as we get older. Fine lines and wrinkles appear with loss of muscle tone. Skin ages gradually. White skin matures quicker than black skin and dry skin matures sooner than others. Therefore it is important to look after our skin. To help improve fine lines and wrinkles it is essential that the correct serums and creams are used. We can enhance our look by simple little things. For example, it you have not thought of having your eyebrows tinted and shaped then do as this can take years off you. (that goes for all you men out there too, the bushy eye brows and ears can be very aging) Facials for both woman and men are essential. The main benefits of facial massage are that it increases the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the skin and muscles, to improve cellular activity and texture. It stimulates removal of waste products from the tissue and promotes total relaxation. Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Dott
It is with great sadness that I have to inform you that the salon will be closing on the Friday 24th December 2010. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of my customers for their loyalty and support over the last three and a half years. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Thanks once more Dott We at the magazine have thoroughly enjoyed being associated with Dott with her regular monthly columns, always delivered on time. We wish her every success with whatever she does in the future.

You do know what would have happened if it had been three wise WOMEN instead of men, don't you? They would have asked for directions, arrived on time, helped deliver the baby, cleaned the stable, made a casserole, and brought disposable nappies as gifts!
SANTA SOL

Many thanks for an informative and well-written publication. A number of the trees planted on Noruega and Mediterraneo last year are obviously dead: we were told they would be replaced by the suppliers. Please can you ask Loreto at your next meeting when this is due to happen? Also, it seems incomprehensible that the police station should have been closed without an alternative location having been earmarked. How much longer do we have to wait for a proper police presence in GA? Regards Bert Dove

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge
Any day now, you will receive in your mailbox a Christmas card postmarked Chippenham, the message inside reading “Best Wishes from Squiggle and Scrawl”, and you will try to remember who you know in Chippenham and why they’re not in your address book. The card will have a picture of a Robin Redbreast on it. The reason why Robins appear on so many Christmas cards goes back to Victorian times. British Postmen wore red uniforms in the late 19th century, and were nicknamed Robins, so the bird on your card represents the promise of a postal delivery. Also they are very non-denominational, so you can send anyone a card with a Robin and not become the subject of a Jihad as a result. We don’t see many Robins in the Clot during summer, but by November there are several of them around. They have joined the Black Redstarts, Bluethroats and Chiffchaffs in our area to spend the winter feasting on the mozzies and other insects which they can’t find in more Northerly climes, and tuning up for the breeding season which is just around the corner. In the UK, they are of course well-known garden birds who will sit on your fence and wait for you to uncover a worm or two while you’re digging, but here in Spain they are more wary; they will keep away from gardens and forage in the undergrowth in the Clot The Robin’s song which can be heard all year round is one of those things which doesn’t mean quite what we might expect. To us, it is a cheery little ditty, reminding us that spring is not too far away; but to
another male Robin it means – “this is my patch, keep away or I’ll poke your eyes out with my sharp beak”. If you watch two male Robins squaring up, they will batter seven bells out of each other while singing furiously, and unless one of them gives in and flies away there will be no technical knockout – they will fight to the death, and some estimates put the Robin death rate from fighting as high as 12 per cent. This is why you never see Robins in a flock. If you see two together, they are a breeding pair, and because the sexes are similar, a lot of posturing and singing goes on while the male attempts to establish if the other bird is a potential mate or a potential punch-bag. The Spanish name is Petirrojo – “Little Red Thing” which proves that when it came to naming the birds both the Spanish and the British didn’t have a word for orange at the time. A Happy Christmas to my regular readers and I’ll see you all next year!

How do you know when there is a snowman in your bed? You wake up wet!
"available for short term holiday let"
298,000 Thanks for the electric guitar you gave me for Christmas," little Chris Cody said to his uncle the first time he saw him after the holidays. "It's the best present I ever got." "That's great," said his uncle. "Do you know how to play it?" "Oh, I don't play it," the little fellow said. "My mom gives me a euro a day not to play it during the day and my dad gives me five euro a week not to play it at night.
A lady lost her handbag in the bustle of Christmas shopping. It was found by an honest little boy and returned to her. Looking in her purse, she commented, "Hmmm.... That's funny. When I lost my bag there was a 20 euro note in it. Now there are twenty one euro coins in it." The boy quickly replied, "That's right, lady. The last time I found a lady's purse, she didn't have any change for a reward."

CHRISTMAS MENU FOR PETS
68
We have written several times Christmas may be a problematic moment for our pets: extra food available, lots of sweets, shiny decorations and lights. Pets are brought to the practice very often due to indigestions or accidents with Christmas decorations. We would like to recommend owners to be very careful in order to avoid these problems, and for this reason we offer you some homemade dogs and cats Christmas treats recipes which have no fats or by-products. We can use most ingredients when we are cooking for our pets. There are just a few precautions to be taken: -If we are going to offer some treats or prizes to our pet, we must reduce the daily quantity of normal food proportionally in order to avoid overfeeding. -We must avoid hot spices such as pepper or chili, artificial colorants, salt and sugar. -Onions (cooked or not), are dangerous for dogs, because they may produce an haemolytic crisis (massive destruction of red blood cells) -Parsley has some hormonallike factors which may affect sexual cycle in bitches. -Chocolate, despite they love it, is toxic for dogs and cats. Chocolate contains bromine, which is very toxic for them. Unsweetened chocolate is by far the worst one, because it contains a high amount of bromine. -Offer some small quantities of
the extra food first, for making sure, it’s well accepted by the digestive system. -Don’t use solid fats or oils. -Don’t use flavourings. These treats are not only delicious, but also very wholesome and nutritious for your pet’s health, and they contain no salt or unhealthy preservatives. A multi-grain dog biscuit recipe: -Yield: 1 large batch. -3 ½ c all purpose flour. -2 c whole wheat flour. -1 c Rye flour. -1 c wheat germ. -2 c cracked wheat. -1/2 c skimmed dry milk. -1 pk dry yeast. -1 c boiling water. -1 pt chicken or beef broth. -1 egg, beaten w/1 tbsp milk. Combine dry ingredients in large bowl. Add yeast and broth, mix thoroughly. Knead until you have a stiff dough. Roll dough into ¼” sheets, cut biscuits into desired shapes. Place on baking sheet. Bake in a 350 degrees oven for 35 minutes. Turn off oven and leave in oven overnight or until cool. Another dog biscuit recipe: -1 ½ cup roller oats. -1 ½ cups whole wheat flour. -3/4 cups wheat germ. -1/3 cup butter. -1 cup boiling water. -2 teaspoons chicken or beef instant bouillon. -1/2 cup milk. -1 cup cheddar cheese. -1 egg, beaten. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Grease cookie sheets. In large bowl combine roller oats, butter and water; let stand for 10 minutes. Stir in wheat germ, bouillon, milk, cheese and egg. Mix well. Add whole wheat flour 1 cup at a time, mixing well after each addition to form stiff dough. On floured surface, knead in remaining flour until dough is smooth and no longer sticky, 3 to 4 minutes. Roll or pat out dough to ½ inch thickness, cut with your bone shaped cookie cutter. Place 1 inch apart on cookie sheets. For thicker bones roll or pat out dough to º inch thick. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes or until golden brown. Cool completely. Store loosely covered. Makes 3 ½ dozen large biscuits. Refrigerate for longer shelf life. Milk biscuits: -3/4 cup hot water. -1/3 cup butter.
-1/2 cup dry milk. -1 egg, beaten. -3 cups whole wheat flour. In a big bowl, add the hot water over the butter. Add dry milk and egg, mixing carefully the ingredients. Add the flour in 2 times, mixing in between. Knead until you have a stiff dough. Roll dough into 1/3 inch sheets. Cut the biscuits in a bone shape. Bake in a 350 degrees oven for 50 minutes. When cool, store them in a hermetic recipient in a cool dry place. Liliana Aldeguer cerdán col 793. English translation by Sergio Reina Esteban, col 747.
