JUST A NOTE: We do provide all of our advertisers with FREE design work and therefore ask that this work not be supplied and used by other publications.

Hello and welcome to our August issue. By the time this magazine comes out, Gran Alacant will have held its own Fiesta, where for three successive evenings, there was something for everyone to enjoy, including a singing and dance routine from MABS, Gran Alacants Cancer Charity. (pictures in next months issue). It was very nice to see a British group performing in a predominately Spanish Fiesta. We even had a shower of rain during the second evening, which was quite refreshing after the heat of the previous weeks. This month we are seeing many more people about on GA. It is great to see them enjoying all of the facilities we have here on our urbanisation.

Have a good month. Sandra and Barry

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news, including that from the Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005. A major problem to residents close to the Life Resort asked us for their help a few months back, as water was running from the resort, into their houses, when there was heavy rain, causing much distress. The Town Hall have now solved the problem . Talking of drains, the major work

between the GA Centre and the school is almost completed as the before and after pictures show. They now have to tunnel under the road to link up with existing

4

drainage. The top photo is one that we printed in our May issue, The second and third pictures show the work that has been carried out.

The first allotments on GA are now complete. 75% of them will be for the over 55始s and the remaining 25% for the over 30始s. All names handed in to Loreto are being checked over, and people will be contacted. There are one or two qualifications. You have to have been on the padron for over 12 months, and be prepared to pay 50 euro per year for a four year period. Water usage is to be paid on top. When everyone has been contacted and filled out the necessary paperwork, a public draw will take place for the pitches. The allotments will officially open on September 10th and it is hoped all of the owners will take up their plots soon after this date.

A few residents are thinking that the GA train is owned by the town hall. This is not true, it is a private enterprise, but the town hall do have a say in how it is run.

A resident had their pocket picked and asked where our police station is now situated. It is to be cited on the community centre car park, near to where the old unused taxi rank is. The police number to ring is 96 541 11 03 where information can be relayed to the Gran Alacant police car. You do have to go to the Guardia Civil police station in Santa Pola to make a

report. This is the station by the new fountain. (it is marked on our map of Santa Pola at the back of this magazine).

Last year a very successful night was had by all at a bring your own supper in front of the library. This is to take place again this year on August 20th. You can ring 609 932 578 to book a space which will include table and chairs.

A large area of land is being cleared by the sports centre in Santa Pola on the Elche road. Why?. The temporary bull ring for the Santa Pola festivals will be placed here and it is hoped that the area can be used for special large events, as there is nowhere in the town for large gatherings.

The council are building a bar down by the beach crossroads, so that over the busy hot summer, there is somewhere to buy food and drinks.

In our email section you will see fears that some of our residents have, regarding rubbish. We will email these contributers to book an appointment with Loreto for her to accompany them to the sites in question, to help eleviate their problems. Our new landscaped roundabout is

the magazine. It was a wonderful atmosphere on GA when the final whistle went. Congratulations to Spain.

The new train that runs between Gran Alacant and Santa Pola, along our wonderful coastline and into the square in Santa Pola is extending the trip to include Los Arenales. Watch their advertising to see if this happens during the month.

Our only Farmacia is to move from it始s present location. Towards the end of September it is moving to an area between Dunbars and the Life Resort. We have marked it on our Gran Alacant map for you.

Our wonderful new sports centre will soon be ready. Loreto took us into the arena to take photgraphs. You will be able to hire the hall by coming to the centre to book. It has a new purpose built floor, seating for spectators and the land shown around it, is to be used for many other sports, tennis included. Pictures of this state of the art facility are on the next page. More local news on pages 6/7/8 and throughout the magazine.

COMMUNITY SPIRIT In an article in a previous issue, we reported on the landscaping of a secret garden, where the community could all get together. In July over sixty people crammed into the secret garden for the 3.2f vs 3.2g petanque match .....which was won by 3.2f, the party went on well into the night and a great time was had by all including the community presidents. How nice to see the wonderful spirit of people in Gran Alacant, summed up in the third picture with the different Nationalities.

The advert right, shows the new tourist train that runs from Gran Alacant, around our lovely coast, and into the picturesque square in Santa Pola. When you get into Santa Pola, use our map in this magazine to find your way around. The pick up point on Gran Alacant is at the Carabassi complex and the route passes our lovely beaches and the new beach bars. As you can see, you can stop off at the beaches or bars and pick the train up on its way back from Santa Pola. A trip not to be missed.

Two Men, Gran Alacant and a Rover 400 (part three)

After Valencia we settled down to the long stretch towards the wonders of Barcelona something the children were looking forward to ...the problem with motorway driving in Spain is the manhood extension four wheel drive drivers who have the art of coming within inches of your rear bumper (why do they do that) anyhow itʼs a pet hate of mine and many years ago while the Rover was still in England we had inline switch put in that would illuminate the break lights at the flick of a switch (legal) I don,t think so..but it has itʼs uses....on this trip it came into itʼs own .....many times a manhood extender would approach only for me to flick a switch ......you could see the whites of their eyes and sometimes even the attempt to move their faces away from their windscreen.ok ok...bad of me (un-lucky). Many from Gran Alacant and from England were tracking us.. many I know had their doubts on the long trip reaching itʼs conclusion my mobile phone never stopped ringing and this was to get me in trouble As the miles passed the the constant phoning by family and friends became a problem...yes they were worried and I understood that ...the problem was my ringtone...my 24 year old son had installed a naughty ringtone (female orgasm) some weeks before and could I frick get it off.....Mike was driving the first time it went off and did his best not to start laughing but alas it was too late...how we did not crash God only knows....Mike said later that day once he regained his composure "that bloody ring tone of yours is going to get you in trouble"....and many miles down the line he was to be proved correct. Barcelona was just 100 miles away and we passed Reus airport ...now this is the airport that Ryan Air claim is in Barcelona....but when booking a flight to Reus airport please put to the back of your mind the thought of coming out of the terminal building and hailing a taxi ..to start with there are no taxis and if there were it would cost you a shite load of money. OK ...one hour after Reus (note the sarcasm) we came into Barcelona and what a lovely city it is ...in fact we were to see more of it than intended. As we entered the lovely city of Barcelona we had fantastic views of the olympic village on our left and some great close up views of some huge cruise liners to our right the only problem with that is the olympic village should have been on our right and we should have been nowhere near the sea never mind a cruise liner (we were lost) well Mike was lost he was driving!!! Not wanting to panic Mike anymore than he already was on this trip I thought it best to keep the truth from him....we then reached our first traffic jam and the screaming engine fell silent (donʼt panic Rover 400 fans she was just ticking over) the silents was broken by my mobile phone yep (female orgasm ring tone again) ..in a vain effort to shut the bloody thing up before I caused any more distress to our female passenger (pauline) I answered it as soon as I could. It was my wife "were ok just a little lost in Barcelona I will ring you back as soon as I can " I said ...as I put the phone away in my pocket I looked across to Mike who was looking at me and he looked less than happy "you just said weʼre lost " he said ....."no no no youʼre driving, youʼr loste" I said.. .with the traffic moving again he turned round and began to drive again laughing and muttering something about my ring tone getting us arrested one of these days.

24

As it happens we followed the coast north and came across the motorway we required ...and soon we were heading for the land of frogs legs and snails. continued next month

For Adoption URGENY APPEAL: This purebred Boxer was seen taking shade from the hot sun under a road bridge. After seeing him there for a few days a lady fed him and supplied him with water. She telephoned us and although we were full and had no space available we decided to rescue the dog. After numerous phone calls pleading for assistance a lady we know that has her own private dog rescue facility in her finca agreed to take him in. A thorough examination by our vet revealed that he has Leishmania and Heartworm disease. He is also ultra anaemic due to the millions of fleas that had infested his body. He has had a blood transfusion for this and we hope that he will survive the next course of highly traumatic treatment that he will undergo to eliminate the heartworms. If he survives this he will then receive treatment for the Leishmania. He is just 4 years old, we have named him Del Boy. Can you sponsor Del Boy to help us pay for the expensive treatment he needs; please call us on 611 606 001 or email k9club@lamarina.info URGENT APPEAL: These four small dogs look terrified, and they are. They were been thrown into a disused old reservoir in the middle of nowhere, with no means escape, no water and no food, just left to die in this sweltering basin. It was by pure chance that they were seen before it was too late. When we arrived they were so frightened they did their best to avoid rescue by hiding among all the dead brush and debris in the concrete pit. It took our volunteers hours to rescue all four of them. This is the first photo that one of our volunteers took of them shortly after they arrived at the vet clinic, in the pen huddled together for reassurance. The smallest one is a female and the other three are male. Can you help to foster one or two of them or perhaps you would like to become a sponsor to supply urgently needed funds that the K9 Club can use to provide all the treatment necessary to bring them back to good health and then find each one a loving new home?

This Airedale Terrier was dumped from a small van in an urbanisation during a rain storm. The white van had written in English on the side ‘Home Nursing’ and also had different coloured logos or images on it. This dog then laid in a field next to spot where he was dumped for three days. Nearby neighbours became concerned about him and fed him until he was willing to be rescued. He is very gentle and his age is 1 year. His name is Boycee. A lady that was putting her waste into a green basura heard a little noise from inside, she removed a plastic bag that was tied and sealed. These two kittens were inside the bag. She took the kittens and called us. They are just 5 weeks old and after a couple of days in the vet clinic they were declared in good health. They are now available for adoption.

For more information please call 676 447 682 Email: k9club@lamarina.info To view more animals for adoption please go to: www.petsinspain.info

OPEN 10am 4pm

'On behalf of all members of GASP Theatre may I say a very big 'thank you' to all of you who attended our first offering of entertainment in Gran Alacant. I am pleased to report that we made a profit of approx. 500â‚Ź and we will be making a small donation to the local school.

Our next production will be 'Habeas Corpus', a brilliant comedy by Allan Bennett, to be peformed in the Casa del Cultura on Saturday and Sunday, 23rd and 24th October, 2010.

Many of you have asked 'why it is being performed in Santa Pola and not here in Gran Alacant'? The answer is quite simple. The room at the Life Resort does not have any facilities for the staging of plays: lighting, curtains, dressing rooms, etc. It also costs us 300â‚Ź to stage a two night event. The Casa del Cultura is a fully equipped professional theatre with all the necessary facilities and does not cost us a cent. Everything is provided free of charge including the use of their own dedicated technical staff, printing of posters, tickets and publicity in their own magazine of forthcoming events. Who could look a gift horse like this in the mouth? UK local authorities take note! I hope you will continue to support us and rest assured we will be staging future events in the Life Resort but on a much smaller scale.

In the meantime if any of you out there are dying to 'tread the boards', help backstage or front of house then please contact me, David Ashley on 966 181 113 or 628 774 461. Your help will be greatly appreciated!

Thermo Auricular Therapy Continued Hopi Ear Candles Ear Candles are used to relieve ear, sinus, nose, throat, and head problems as well as stimulate the lymph and metabolism of the body.

What does it treat? Ear Candles should be considered for: Irritations in the ears (otitis) Catarrh and sinusitis Snoring Migrains Glue ear (although not if grommets are in place) Colds, flu and sore throats Rhinitis/hay fever Noises in ears (tinnitus) Excessive excitement and stress Relief of pressure before flying or driving NB Ear candles will not be used if there is a perforated ear drum, grommets or infection in the ear.

What are Ear Candles? The candles are hollow tubes made from organic linen impregnated with beeswax, honey, St Johns Wort and medicinal herbs such as sage and chamomile. They have a filter towards the bottom

which prevents any liquid wax or candle residue from entering the ear. The candle works on a chimney principle, drawing many impurities to the surface. They also equalize the pressure in the head and ears and the healing vapour can protect and soothe irritation, stimulate the lymph glands and also the immune system.

What happens during a treatment? You lie on a couch with your head comfortably to one side and I then place the lighted candle carefully in your ear. I then place my hands gently around the base of the candle, protecting your head, there is absolutely no danger and no possibility of burning. The candle is extinguished before it reaches my hands and so a long time before it will reach your head. After repeating the other ear you will receive a gentle, healing head massage that will enhance the effects of the candles.

Does it hurt? No. as the candle burns you may experience gentle reassuring warmth, and you will hear a pleasant soft crackling sound – like a distant sparkler, or seashell. If you are interested, have any questions please call me at my salon (see advert below) Next month I will discuss Minx Nails See you then Dott

Sponsored by

Super Valu Our club captain John Chapman is celebrating his 70th birthday by undertaking a sponsored walk across England during July. The route will be between his former home on the Thames Estuary at Basildon, to the club chairman’s house on the Severn Estuary. John will be following the course of the Thames Path and then joining the Kennet and Avon Canal, then along the river Avon to Bristol where it overlooks the Severn Estuary. John initially thought that he would travel by canoe, but on investigating the number of locks to be negotiated along the different canal systems and the carrying of his canoe and effects between them he thought better of it. He also considered skiing (But no snow), also roller skating, (But no smooth paths) and cycling (But he doesn’t like vaseline???). John finally settled on walking because he wanted to capitalise on his leg muscle building programme that he gets from his regular travel from his front door to his car. We wish him every success and hope that he returns to us fitter and wiser. All proceeds of the sponsorship will be donated equally between the British Heart Foundation, the Prostate Cancer Research Foundation and the person who estimates the closest distance John will have travelled on the sponsorship forms at the club. You can also donate to this worthy cause by following the link below:http:// original.justgiving.com/johnchapmandonations This is the first progress report received from John on Friday 9th July "I started my walk as planned on Friday 2nd. It

was an exceptionally warm day and the little toe on my right foot was suffering already. On Saturday the weather was a bit cooler in the morning but warmed considerably in the afternoon. My British Heart Foundation shirt arrived in the morning so I was wearing red-- and by the end of the long hot day my spherical appendages were the same colour. Terry Errington (Club vice captain) tried to warn me about that! However I managed to reach Tower Bridge and I was quite pleased, although the scenery of the East End was pretty depressing. Sunday I had an enforced "rest day" while my blisters recovered.

TRAVELLING BY CAR WITH PETS During the summer, long or short distance car trips become more common, and many people usually take their pets with them. The latest Spanish traffic rules don’t specify how to carry the animals in the car, they just say, same as the objects you carry in the car, the animal mustn’t interfere the driver tasks in any way. Violating this rule implies €100 fine (no penalty points, because it’s considered a minor violation). This is about legal implications, but what we really care about, is protecting our pets (and ourselves) when an accident happens: we mustn’t forget that, in case of a frontal crash, a 10 kg dog, if it is not properly attached, will smash our seat weighing as much as an elephant, because the sudden deceleration will multiply several times the real weight of the dog, so imagine how serious may be the damage for the human occupants of the car if this happens. There are different options for protecting pets when travelling by car, and all of them are legal

62

(remember traffic rules don’t speak about specific fixation systems. All they say is they must be “sufficient”), but some of them are better than others depending on the size and characteristics of the animal: -Cats. The most logical option is, of course, a cat carrier. You can, for example, put it on the car floor, between front and rear seats. If the trip lasts 4 hours or more, the cat should get out of the carrier for having some water and going to the toilet, always with a harness on, and in quiet places. Of course, an animal should never stay alone in a car in summer (high risk of a fatal heat stroke). -Small dogs. They normally feel comfortable in a carrier, same as cats. They should go for a walk every time you stop for having a rest. -Large dogs. In this case, a proper carrier is normally too big for an average car, so they should travel one of this ways: -In the back part of the car, isolating them from the front seats with a net or similar.

-Using a special harness which gets fastened to the human safety belt attachment (much better if you use a double harness for two attachment points, because the fixation it provides is much more efficient). Not every net or harness is valid. You can get the right ones easily in Vet practices or car spares shops. These two systems are also valid for cats and small dogs, but not as safe for them as the carrier.

passengers and pedestrians, there are some Animal Protection laws which are supposed to protect animal welfare, so, we must remind you that, due to Animal Protection laws, it’s absolutely forbidden to carry animals in the boot (we mean an ordinary boot, not the one of a van or station-wagon car).

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge

If God had intended us to exercise, he wouldn’t have invented pastelerias. Well, that’s my excuse anyway, obviously from my visits to the Clot a lot of other people seem to think that exercise is good for you, as they jog along purple-faced and panting in the heat. I suppose it gives you a good workout, but you can get that even with a leisurely stroll through the Clot. There is always the chance of giving your heart a severe jolt, as has happened to me several times, when an enormous dinosaur thingy crashes through the undergrowth right by your feet when you are least expecting it. Actually it’s not a dinosaur, even though it looks like one – it is the Ocellated Lizard, which can grow to one metre or more (over three feet in old money). Most of the lizards in the Clot are a lot smaller than this, but this particular species thrives here. It is probably more common than you might realise, as it keeps itself away from human contact as far as possible by hiding away in burrows which it either digs for itself, or occupies abandoned rabbit burrows, but there is always that chance of getting your adrenaline rush if you come upon one unexpectedly. My photo shows a youngish lizard about half a metre in size, which I found near the Charco de Contacto hide; there is another one which lurks just around the corner on the track going North which is a lot bigger! You can see the blue spots on its flank which identify this species, although they can be even more brightly coloured than the one in the photo.

64

They feed on insects, particularly large beetles, but they will also rob birds nests, and occasionally they will take frogs, other reptiles and small mammals, as well as fruit and other plant matter. They are found throughout Spain, as well as Southern France and Italy, preferring areas which are open to the sun, and can live in the driest of terrains. They hibernate in their burrows from October until March or April, depending on the prevailing temperates. One thing you don’t want to do is to try and catch one; although they can be kept as pets and become quite tame; in the wild if cornered they can inflict a nasty bite which will usually become severely infected unless treated immediately. But don’t worry, they are far more scared of you! The Spanish name is Lagarto; those of you who have travelled extensively in Spain may have come across a dish called Lagarto com Tomate in Extremadura. If you have dined on this, then yes, you have been eating this lizard, and although they are now a protected species throughout Iberia, apparently certain restaurants can “arrange” this dish if warned in advance. And with that stomach-churning thought, I’ll see you next month

Hi Barry and Sandra

Genuine emails to our magazine

Can you tell me the best way to get a dustbin moved from the side of my house.

I live on Avenida Escandanavia opposite Max Coop and the dustbin is on the road in Calle Canaries. the stench from it is terrible is as much as by the late afternoon you are unable tos ist out in the garden cause the smell is so bad. Most and possibly all of the rubbish is placed in it by Max Coop themselves.

I don't see why the dustbin cannot be placed back into the Supermarket's car park.

Hope you can help. Barbara Turnbull ex RBL Treaurer

Dear Barry & Sandra,

I live in Calle Holanda, there is a piece of land at the very end of that road which belongs I believe, to Masa. It is fenced off but there is a constant problem with fly tipping by builders and gardeners who break open the fence and dump rubbish. It looks terrible and really lets the area down. There is also a big tin shed which was used by Masa to store building materials. It is falling down and a complete eyesore, whether it is on Masa land or land belonging to the council I am not sure but needs to be removed. Can anything be done to clear this area up and stop people using it as a tip. Only yesterday there was a gardener working on one of the villas pruning trees and dumping it all in this spot. If you can give us any ideas on what we can do to try and get this stopped we would be very grateful.

Thank you Peter & Maggie Harris.

We at the magazine are often asked by establishments, (who do not advertise with us), if they can stock copies of our magazine. We always give priority to those that advertise with us, and we determine areas where we want as much coverage as possible for our advertisers and loyal readers. This is why we very carefully pick out our delivery points. We have our three main delivery outlets where we top up with extra copies during the month, where these venues let us know when they require more copies. Ask at these three venues Qiucksave up the hill, Phoenix, down the hill, and Euronics, at the GA Centre, if you would like a copy. Feedback from all of our distribution points are telling us just how popular our magazine is, compared to others, so we do our best to provide all of our readers with copies.

DOG FOULING PETITION We would like to thank all of you who signed our dog fouling petition, over 300 of you in fact.. Thanks to O’Duills and Dick Turpins for all of their work in getting names added. We handed in all of the names to the Town Hall this month. We are not against dogs, we have our own, Pepsi, who we love dearly. So many residents and visitors to our urbanisation are appalled at the amount of dog fouling. We are asking for a Dog Warden, who can be financed by the fines given out to offenders, so as not to cost the Town Hall any financial outlay.

If you have problems, please telephone us on 966 699 167
