We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news, including that from our Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005. It is our perogative at the magazine, NOT to update this 2005 picture, as we all looked a great deal younger!!! MANHOLE COVER As you know, we do our best at our Council meetings, to get things done, that are important to some of our readers. Way back, Jeff complained to us about the sunken manhole cover that he ran into on his motorbike, nearly causing him to fall off. We mentioned this at a meeting, and again at a later date and were told that it was on the list of things to do. We watched the manhole every time we went by, hoping one day that it would get sorted and lo and behold, just before Christmas, without any
more prompting from us, the cover was raised. So an early Christmas present to Jeff and everyone else on bikes or cars that have run over this obstacle.

Last month we published the area of land to be used for the new Church. You can see from the attached plan that it could not be built nearer to the petanc area as this is green land and not to be built on. We will publish any building plans when we have them, having expressed our views to Loreto to respect the views of

TO SCHOOL residents living in that area. This parcel of land has been leased to the Church so will always stay owned by the Town Hall. The building and siting of the church will cost the Town Hall nothing. It was thought important that those on GA wanting a Church were given this opprtunity. New pavements are being laid all the way from the opposite side of the road from Quicksave, all the way up to near the lighthouse. These pavements are at the moment, the original ones from when Gran Alacant was first born. We mentioned a problem around some of the fencing along the Clot, where the land around some of the posts was falling away. Before we went to press, this was being sorted. The only fountain on Gran Alacant is due to be officially opened on February 13th at 12 noon. So many obstacles have been put in the way of getting this fountain working. It just shows that even our Town Hall have

problems getting things done out here. (nothing new then). The official Town Hall plaque will be included on the site of this roundabout, showing that we on Gran Alacant are part of Santa Pola. A problem spoken to us from a mum who is resident out here. “My son keeps getting stopped by the local police and they are asking for his ID. What ID does he need to comply�. When we asked Loreto she picked up the phone and asked the Police Chief. The Police should not be asking for this ID from a minor. We have an answer to this which we have talked about to the mother. We do not want to put this in print, but if you are having the same problem, please give us a call. There was an unfortunate motor scooter fatality on the urbanisation between the post office and the GA Commercial centre, last month, which closed the road for a while. And now the opportunity to go back through all of last years magazines, to remind you of all that has happened on our
urbanisation over the last twelve months. Most months we carried pictures from our advertisers of events that took place on their premises. January Work was underway with our new park and the fencing all along the edge of the Clot. The allotment idea was also muted to us. Discussions were also taking place to landscape the roundabout at the bottom of the Maxcoop hill. February Main story was the opening of the park. Many names coming to us about the allotments. There were over a thousand entries for the running of the Santa Pola 1/2 marathon run on the 24th of the month. Dog mess was mentioned yet again and on the 23rd we were at the opening of the improved Santa Pola football stadium. March We were at the official opening of the new park. Discussions were underway about the new tourist train for Gran Alacant. We were told about the revamp in the health centre to include a new paediatric service. April Over 150 people were planting trees in the Clot. The dog fouling petition was started by us, to try to get a permanent dog warden on Gran Alacant. We were at the talks at the Life Resort by the British Consulate from Alicante. Discussions also took place about residents parking near

the Life Resort. Campervans in the Clot, better signposting. The 5 million subsidy for roundabouts, pumping station, and improved technology for the Town Hall. May Local police saved the life of a man in a gas cylinder explosion on the urbanisation. We had pictures from the medieval market during the Easter holidays. We had news and pictures about the works to eleviate flooding along Avenida Noregua with the introduction of new pipe work. Pictures and news of the near completion of the inside of the sports centre. Also mentioned was the re generation of Av Mediterraneo from the post office towards the beach hill. Work was completed on the dangerous bend between the post office and the GA Commercial centre. A book launch also took place, Sandals & Slippers by Terry O’Shea. Our front cover picture showed those that took part in the MABS Cancer Charity walk. June We started our Rover 400 story which we serialised. We had pictures of the Mayor visiting the boat museum in Santa Pola. An initial start was made to try and set up a car boot on Gran Alacant. We showed plots on the GA map where 2 hotels may be built in the future. Pictures showed the proposed cycle way, and the site for the allotments.

July Showed pictures from the first full production from our Gran Alacant Theatre Group G.A.S.P. A tiger (not real) was seen in the
Clot. It was announced that a new tourist train would run along the coast to Santa Pola. It would also access two up market beach front bars. Our dog fouling petition reached its conclusion. A trade fair was to take place in early July. We printed the route for the new orbital tourist train. We were also sent pictures of the new cycle path through to Santa Pola. August Our front cover showed pictures of the success of the Spanish football team in the World Cup. We also had pictures of the Tabarca/Santa Pola swim and of the inside revamp of the sports hall. The allotments were completed. More rubbish appearing and pictures of the almost completed new roundabout. Our map showed where the new Farmacia was locating to and from. September A cliff jump by Terry O’Shea, for the MABS cancer group and the GA big bowls event were announced to take place in September. More pictures showed the bush fires on GA. Pictures showed the official opening of the roundabout in Santa Pola and also of the completion of the new road just outside Santa Pola on the road to Elche. October Was the first month we introduced the printing of our news pages in Spanish and Dutch for our foreign readers. Pictures of Terry jumping off the cliff. The flood pipework was completed and the dog mess petition was presented to the Town Hall. We mentioned the problem with some of GA’s slippery pavements. The 10th of the month saw the running races on the GA Commercial car park. We were asked if various pictures of Gran Alacant events were available. The answer was mainly a no, but we at the

magazine are starting to provide this kind of service in the new year. Picture also of the 2 new motorbikes for the Police of Santa Pola. November Our front cover showed our Councillors receiving an award in Madrid. The charity choir singing took place at the Life Resort, with pictures in this edition. Another fire on GA and we asked what you all thought about the gas company tearing up our nice urbanisation. The Chickenwing restaurant awards were to start this month and the allotment names had been selected. The final part of our 2 men and a Rover. The successful fashion show took place on the 28th.
December Pictures of the new roundabout on the Elche road and the big street party on the 5th of the month. We listed the Christmas activities for GA. We had 2 police reports on events that took place and the forum restaurant award voting was well and truly up and running. Just a few of the news stories we reported on during the year. Let us hope that 2011 brings much more. (including the golf course!!!!)

POZO TAPADO Como sabeís, lo hacemos lo mejor que podemos en las reuniones con el alcalde para avanzar con cosas que son importantes para algunos de nuestros lectores. Hace tiempo, Jeff nos comentó que había un pozo en la calle por el que pasó con su motocicleta, casi causándole una caída. Mencionamos esto en una reunión y nos dijeron que estaba en la lista de cosas para hacer. Hemos estado mirando el pozo cada vez que pasamos por ahí, esperando que algún día se arreglara, y justo antes de Navidades, sin aviso, lo arreglaron. Así que, un regalito de Navidad para Jeff y el resto de coches y motos que han tenido que pasar por este obstáculo.

Este terreno ha sido arrendado a la Iglesia, así que siempre será del Ayto. La construcción de la Iglesia no tendrá coste alguno para el Ayto. Se creyó importante para aquellos de GA queriendo una Iglesia, que se les diera esta oportunidad.
Están colocando aceras nuevas enfrente del supermercado Quicksave, a lo largo de la carretera hasta cerca del faro. Las aceras que hay en este momento son las originales Gran Alacant. La única fuente de Gran Alacant va a ser abierta oficialmente el 13 de febrero a las 12h. Han tenido muchos problemas para hacer que esta fuente
Een tijdje geleden klaagde jeff over het deksel van de rioolering toen hij er met zijn Motobike overreed en bijna viel .
We hebben dit bij de vergadering besproken en op een latere datum zelfs nogmaals en toen werd ons geinformeerd dat het op de 'te doen lijst' stond .iedere keer als we voorbij de riooleringsput kwamen ,hoopten we dat het al hersteld was en juist voor Kerstmis was het deksel hersteld, dus een vroeg kerstmisgeschenk voor Jeff en iedereen die er hinder van heeft gehad .
Vorige maand publiceerden wij het gebied van het stuk land dat voor de nieuwe Kerk moet worden gebruikt. U kunt zien van het plan in bijlage dat het niet dichtbij aan het petancgebied kon worden gebouwd aangezien dit groen land is en niet op gebouwd mag worden . Wij zullen om het even welke bouwplannen publiceren wanneer wij hen in bezit hebben .We hebben onze mening duidelijk gemaakt aan Loreto om respect te hebben voor het zicht van de bewoners die in die woonwijk wonen .
Dit stuk land is verhuurd aan de Kerk zo het altijd bezit blijven van het Stadhuis . De bouw en het situeren van de kerk zullen het Stadhuis niets kosten. Het werd belangrijk geacht dat die, die op GA een Kerk willen die ook werd gegeven.
De nieuwe voetpaden worden helemaal aangelegd aan de tegenovergestelde kant van de weg van Quicksave, helemaal tot aan de vuurtoren. Deze bestratingen zijn op het ogenblik, de originele van toen Gran Alacant eerste geboren was. De enige fontein op Gran Alacant zal

Hubo un accidente de moto que causó una muerte en la urbanización entre Correos y GA Centro Comercial. Se cerró la calle durante un tiempo.
Estamos viendo como los dueños de las huertos están haciendo uso de sus nuevas parcelas.

Enero Se estaba trabajando en nuestro nuevo parque y el cerco del Clot. La idea de los huertos ya estaba en el aire. Se estaba debatiendo sobre el diseño de la rotonda de abajo de la cuesta del Maxcoop.
Febrero Lo principal fue la apertura del parque. Muchas personas preguntaron por los huertos. Hubo más de 1000 inscripciones para la 1/2 maratón de Santa Pola el 24 de ese mes. El 23 estuvimos en la apertura del estadio mejorado de Santa Pola. Marzo Estuvimos en la apertura oficial del

Een probleem dat aan ons werd vertelt door een moeder die hier vaste bewoner is . „Mijn zoon wordt steeds tegen gehouden door de lokale politie en zij vragen om zijn identiteitskaart .
Welke identiteitskaart moet hij aan voldoen“. Toen wij Loreto informatie vroegen belde zij de Hoofdcommisaris van de Politie.
De politie zou niet om deze identiteitskaart van een minderjarige mogen vragen. Wij hebben een antwoord en dit hebben wij met de moeder besproken. Wij willen dit niet op papier zetten , maar als u hetzelfde probleem heeft, gelieve ons een belletje te geven .
Er was een noodlottig ongeval met een scooter tussen het postkantoor en het Commerciële centrum van GA, dat de weg voor een tijdje afgesloten was.
Het is aardig om de toewijzingseigenaars te zien gebruik makend van hun nieuwe percelen.
En nu is de kans om door de tijdschriften terug te gaan, om u aan alles te herinneren dat op onze urbanisatie in de loop van de laatste twaalf maanden gebeurd is.
De meeste maanden droegen wij fotos van onze adverteerders van gebeurtenissen die in hun lokaal plaatsvonden.
Januari Werk was aan de gang om ons nieuw park en het schermen van allen langs de rand van de Clot. Het toewijzingsidee werd ook verzwegen aan ons. De besprekingen vonden ook plaats om de rotonde beneden aan de Maxcoopheuvel te modelleren .

This beautiful Husky/Malamute cross was found on a main road leading to an urbanization. He has a fantastic temperament and is a very obedient dog. He is just 18 months, he loves everyone and is good with other dogs. We have named him Suko.
Dennis is 4 months old and a very intelligent large puppy. He is playful and attentive and loves everyone. He is good with children and other dogs.
A man who had seen this Cocker Spaniel wandering the streets enticed her into his garden and then phoned us. A visit to the vet confirmed that she was heavily pregnant. Two days later in the kennels she gave birth to ten puppies overnight. Mum and pups have been moved to a foster home and are now available for adoption.
Dan is a beautiful Ginger and White cat. He is very sociable and good with other cats, approx 1 year old and likes to sit on your lap.

Abril Más de 150 personas estuvieron plantando árboles en el Clot. Con el tema de las cacas de perros, solicitamos un controlador para GA. Estuvimos en las charlas del Consulado Británico de Alicante en el Life Resort. También se estuvo debatiendo sobre los residentes aparcando cerca del Life Resort. Para las caravanas en el clot, mejor señalizadas. Un subsidio de 5 millones para rotondas, gasolinera y mejor tecnología en el Ayuntamiento.
Mayo La Policía Local salvó la vida de un hombre en una explosión de gas en la urbanización. Hicimos fotos del mercado medieval de Pascua. Se hicieron trabajos para aliviar las inundaciones de Av. Noruega con la introducción de nuevas cañerías. Fotos y noticias del interior del centro deportivo. Se mejoraron las zonas de descanso y paseo de la cuesta de la playa. Se mejoró la curva peligrosa entre Correos y el Centro Comercial. Terry O'Shea lanzó su libro "Sandals & Slippers". En nuestra foto de portada estaban los participantes de la caminata benéfica de MABS.
Junio Empezamos con las historias de Rover 400. Vimos fotos del Alcalde visitando el museo del barco de Santa Pola. Se inició un debate para crear un mercadillo de segunda mano en Gran Alacant. Enseñamos los planos de las parcelas que se usarán para construir 2 hoteles en el futuro. También mostramos una propuesta para una vía de ciclistas, y los terrenos para los huertos. Julio Enseñamos fotos de la primera producción de nuestro grupo de teatro G.A.S.P.
Februari Het Belangrijkste punt van februari was het openen van het park.Vele namen zijn er toegekomen bij ons in verband met de tuintjes . Er waren over duizend inschrijvingen voor het Santa Pola 1/2 marathon die op de vierentwintigste van de maand in werking werd gesteld.
De hondpoep werd nogmaals vermeld en op de drieëntwintigste waren wij bij de opening van het betere voetbalstadion van Santa Pola.
Maart Wij waren bij de officiële opening van het nieuwe park. De besprekingen waren aan de gang over de nieuwe toeristentrein voor Gran Alacant.
Wij werden over de opknapping in het gezondheidscentrum verteld om een nieuwe pediatrische dienst krijgen .
April Meer dan 150 mensen plantte bomen in de Clot.
De petitie ivb bevuiling van de honden die door ons is begonnen, proberen we om een permanente hondwachter op Gran Alacant te krijgen. Wij waren bij de besprekingen bij de Toevlucht van het Leven door het Britse Consulaat van Alicante. De besprekingen gingen ook over bewoners die te dichtbij de life resort parkeren.

May De Lokale politie redde in mei het leven van een man in een explosie van de gascilinder op de urbanisatie. Wij hadden fotos van de middeleeuwse markt tijdens paasvakantie. Wij hadden nieuws en fotos over de werkzaamheden aan eleviate overstroming langs Avenida Noregua met de introductie van het nieuwe pijpwerk. De beelden en het nieuws van de dichtbijgelegen voltooiing van de binnenkant van de sporten centreren. Ook vermeld werd de re generatie van Av Mediterraneo van het postkantoor naar de strandheuvel. Agosto En nuesta portada: fotos del éxito de la selección Española en la Copa del Mundo. También había fotos de la travesía a nado Santa Pola/Tabarca y del interior modernizado del polideportivo. Los huertos se completaron. Fotos de la rotonda casi completada. Nuestro mapa enseñaba dónde estaría la nueva farmacia.
Septiembre Terry O'Shea se tiró en parapente para la asociación MABS (grupo apoyo cáncer) y se anunció para Septiembre el evento de bolos de GA. Con más fotos vimos los incendios en el campo. Se inauguró oficialmente la rotonda de Santa Pola además de la finalización de la carretera entre Santa Pola y Elche. Octubre Fue el primer mes que introducimos las traducciones en Español y Holandés para nuestros lectores extranjeros. Se vieron las fotos de Terry saltando del acantilado. Las cañerías para las inundaciones se completaron y nuestra petición para los perros se presentó al Ayto. Mencionamos los problemas con las aceras resbaladizas. El 10 de ese mes vimos las carreras en el aparcamiento del Centro Comercial. Nos preguntaron si las fotos de los eventos estaban disponibles, la respuesta es no por ahora, en este año nuevo empezaremos a dar este servicio. Fotos también de las 2 nuevas motocicletas para la Policia de Santa Pola. Noviembre Nuestra portada mostraba a los concejales recibiendo un premio en Madrid. Un coro cantó en el Life Resort para fin benéfico. Otro

De beelden toonden de voorgestelde cyclusmanier, en de plaats voor de toewijzingen.
Juli toonde beelden van de eerste volledige productie van onze Groep G.A.S.P. van het Theater van Gran Alacant.
Een (niet echte) tijger werd gezien in de Klonter. Men kondigde aan dat een nieuwe toeristentrein langs de kust aan Santa Pola zou lopen. Het zou ook tot twee op de voorstaven van het marktstrand toegang hebben. Onze hond die verzoek bevuilt nam zijn conclusie. Een handelsbeurs moest begin Juli plaatsvinden. Wij drukten de route voor de nieuwe orbitale toeristentrein. Wij werden ook verzonden beelden van de nieuwe cyclusweg door naar Santa Pola.
Augustus Ons schutblad toonde beelden van het succes van het Spaanse voetbalteam in de Kop van de Wereld. Wij hadden ook beelden van Tabarca/Santa Pola en van de binnenkant zwemmen knap van de sporthal op. De toewijzingen werden voltooid. November Ons schutblad toonde onze Raadsleden die een toekenning in Madrid ontvangen. Liefdadigheidschoir het zingen vond bij de Toevlucht van het Leven, met beelden in deze uitgave plaats. Een andere brand op GA en wij vroegen wat u al gedachte over het omhoog tearing gasbedrijf onze aardige urbanisatie. De Chickenwing restauranttoekenning moest deze maand beginnen en de toewijzingsnamen waren geselecteerd. Het definitieve deel van onze 2 mensen en Rover. De succesvolle manier toont op de achtentwintigste plaatsvond.
De Beelden van december van de nieuwe rotonde op de Elche weg en de grote straatpartij op vijfde van de maand. Wij maakten een lijst van de activiteiten van Kerstmis voor GA. Wij hadden 2 politierapporten over gebeurtenissen die plaatsvonden en de de toekenning van het forumrestaurant stemming was goed en echt in gebruik.

Hi everybody, In February, apart from the cold weather, there are specials things to do like, once again, going to see the parade of Moors and Christians in Bocairente held on 2nd of February, Also fiestas held in Sax 22nd to 23rd . Another activity in February are Carnivals, all Towns along the Costa Blanca celebrate Carnivals, one of the best in the area is the one held in Torrevieja. However, if you really want to see something spectacular go to see one held in the village of Aguilas 3rd 12th, a bit further down from Cartagena.

Lets talk now about the almond blossom the inland becomes certainly pretty, almost everybody knows Jalon valley or Guadalest valley but not too many people know my favourite, which in my opinion is the most beautiful in the all Costa Blanca “El valle de la Seta�. It could be beginning, middle or end of the month, but it lasts about ten days. Bye bye friends.
WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge
“What we need”, said the wife to me at the end of last year, “is a new paint scheme in this house”. Well that left me feeling like a constipated cat as I was forced to contemplate a Dulux Paint colour chart with such esoteric names as Taupe, Henna, Muscadet and Cotton. Why they can’t give more descriptive names is beyond me – what’s wrong with Grubby Yellow, Off-White or Sickly Green – these I can understand and relate to. However, there’s one of those odd names which I do know, and that is the greenish blue colour which is called Teal. And here’s where it comes from, the Common Teal which is known in Spanish as Cerceta común, and this is the most numerous winter duck to be found on the pools in the Clot from September to March. The Teal colour name comes from the blue-green stripe around the head of the male duck, who at this time of year is developing his finest breeding plumage ready for the season ahead. There are usually up to a hundred Teal in the Clot during the winter months, the drake wearing his finery as seen in my picture, the duck has a more subdued brown plumage suited to hiding away in the undergrowth when she is nesting. Both birds have an electric blue flash on their wings (known as the speculum) which can only be seen when they move their wings. They will fly northwards around
the end of March to cooler climes where they can raise their young without the risk of the ducklings turning into crispy duck in the hot Spanish sun. Whilst wintering in Spain, they will be eating mostly vegetable matter found in the water; it is no good throwing them breadcrumbs as they will ignore them, unlike the Mallards which will do just about anything short of a fandango for a piece of bread. They are also much shyer than the Mallards, and will scoot away if they become aware of human observers, which is one reason why you should be quiet when in the hides in the Clot. There is an old argument about whether you get wetter in the shower by standing still or moving about (look it up on the Internet, you’ll see endless arguments both for and against). The Teal most decidedly comes down in the moving about camp; if you watch them for any length of time you will see that one of their bathing techniques involves a high-speed dash along the surface of the water, ending in a crash dive just below the surface. I suppose this is their equivalent of a pressure wash, I don’t know if it’s effective, but I don’t plan to try it myself. See you next month.
