Hello Everyone, Welcome to July’s edition. A big thank you to all who read our magazine on the internet, we are getting a collosal response. We are hitting very high targets which is appreciated (and free) to all of our advertisers. With swimming pools and beaches now very busy take care, with the very strong sunlight, it’s so easy to burn which can lead to spoilt holidays. This month friends of ours had the same idea as us of going over to the Isle of Tabarca, as we went by different modes of transport, we decided to include the two experiences in the magazine this month, which ever way you chose we are sure you will have a good day out. This month there is also a competition on page 18, where “The Winery” are kindly donating a prize of a 3 litre magnum of wine, to find pepsi, hidden away in this issue, just be aware she is not the dog in the advert on page 68, so get looking, it is a very good prize.
Have a good month

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news from the Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005.
With the success of the new school on Gran Alacant, plans are now being made to find a suitable area for a second school, to be built at a later date.
Alacant sign as you come onto the Urbanisation. It was replaced because the previous one was not very colourful. It is hoped this gives a better impression of Gran Alacant.
The new roundabout at the bottom of the Maxcoop hill will soon continue , after sorting out the areas for new signs that are required.
Various lorries have been seen dumping rubble around the urbanisation. Any info you could send to us, to pass on to the Town Hall, would be very much appreciated as the procedure is illegal.
The new golf course plans have still not been ok’d. Gran Alacant Sports Centre. Antonio is always on hand here to help and advise you of the various activities available The budget for future work for Santa Pola and Gran Alacant, should be announced by next month. We can then start to tell you, just what this money will be allocated for. Have you noticed the new Gran

The new digital sign that used to be on the roundabout as you enter GA, has been moved up the hill, near to the Tourist Office, as it was deemed to be dangerous to drivers on the roundabout. The Town Hall are very impressed with the new Life Resort. Loreto and the Mayor were shown around the complex and the owners have allocated a large plot to the Town Hall, where they hope to arranged many facilities to all of Gran Alacant. It has now been decided to make much of the resort not only available to the reidents there, but also to all of us on Gran Alacant. We hope to have a meeting next month with the Life Resort, to obtain more

mascot that is going to serve to reinforce the image of the next World-wide Championship of Windsurfing, that will be celebrated in 2009. The mascot, as The Mayor has explained, is called wind and in it’s design, the wind has been remembered as the name suggests, as well as the sea, two fundamental elements for the practice of this sport. Also, the mascot includes the most characteristic and traditional colours. Wind is a boy who registers windsurfing and is going to be an incentive for any activity that from now on outlined around windsurfing. We were asked to point out a water leak from the pipework alongside El Clot. When we mentioned this at our meeting, Loreto phoned the people concerned and two days later workmen were there repairing the pipe. We do

An attractive blonde from Cork arrived at the Casino and bet Twenty-thousand Euros on a single roll of the dice. She said, 'I hope you don't mind, but I feel much luckier when I'm Completely nude'. With that, she stripped from the neck down, rolled the dice and yelled, 'Come on, baby, Mama needs new clothes!' As the dice came to a stop, she jumped up and down and

A woman came home to find her husband in the kitchen shaking frantically, almost in a dancing frenzy, with some kind of wire running from his waist towards the electric kettle. Intending to jolt him away from the deadly current, she whacked him with a handy plank of wood, breaking his arm in two places. Up to that moment, he had been happily listening to his......... Walkman.

I'm not usually one for giving warnings about potential scams but I had a close call yesterday. I walked into B&Q hardware store at lunchtime and some old guy dressed in a black shirt with an orange apron on asked me if I wanted decking. Fortunately, I got the first punch in and sorted the begger out. Those less suspecting might not be so lucky. Pass this warning on. TO ADVERTISE IN THE “GRAN ALACANT ADVERTISER phone: 966 699 167

El Altet airport saw the delivery of the Telefonica Negro entry for the Volvo Ocean Race starting from Alicante on 11/10/08
ʻTelefonica Negroʼ became the first boat which will be participating in Octoberʼs Volvo Ocean Race to arrive in Alicante last week.
The hull of the boat arrived on board the gigantic Antonov 124 transport plane (which, we have been informed by several readers, is the second biggest cargo plane in the world) having travelled from New Zealand where it was constructed. The plane, which was not the Antonov 225 which we were led to believe would be transporting the boat, landed at 8.15am and the delicate operation of removing the 10 million euro hull from its hold began.
All told, it took 5 hours to complete the unloading, which was complicated due to the size of the hull, which is 21 metres long and 5.7 metres wide. Ten personnel specialising in operations of this magnitude travelled with it on the plane. Once the enormous plane doors were open at each end, a crane was used to lift the 2 ton hull on to a special transporter which, under heavy police escort, took the hull to Poniente where it was unloaded into its cradle in the shipyard. Work will now commence on fitting it out.

This months news from the
Local Police in their monthly column. Some recommendations to follow if you want to avoid robberies on the beach:
1. Avoid to have a lot of money with you, jewellery or other things with value when you go to the beach. You have to bring with you only what you really need. 2. When you park your car close to the beach area, do not leave any thing inside that could be seen. 3. Avoid going to far away beaches. It is much better to go to closer and with more people beaches. 4. You must be very careful with your things on the beach. Do not leave them alone. 5. If you go there with children, be very careful with them. 6. Avoid practising sports in areas with a lot of people. 7 The activity of children will be seen by adults. 8. Be very careful with the sellers of
STROKE IDENTIFICATION
products on the beaches. In the Santa Pola town the peddlers are prohibited. 9. Do not drink alcohol when you are going to swim. 11. Before going inside the sea, be sure you can have a swim, see the flags before. 12. The rocky areas and the ports are very dangerous places to have a swim. 13. It is better to have your swim where you will find seawatchers. 15. Try to swim not going to inside the sea. 16. Be careful with air beds. It is too easy to go inside the sea. 17. Follow the indications of the police and the seawatchers. 19 . Do not bring your dog with you on the beach.
cut out and keep
A friend was reading an article in a magazine the other day with regards to recognising if someone was having a stroke, as the article said, if you can get help to a stroke victim within 3 hours the effects of the stroke can be reversed, so we thought it was a very good thing to put into our magazine, there are 3 simple questions to ask anyone who suddenly becomes unwell, 1: ask the person to SMILE. 2: ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE coherently, i.e.is it sunny today? 3: ask him or her to raise both arms. If he or she has trouble with ANYONE of these tasks call a doctor or ambulance and describe these symptoms to them. Another 'sign' of a stroke is to ask the person to stick out their tongue. If the tongue is crooked; if it goes to one side or the other; that is also an indication of a stroke. Hopefully you will never need this info, but is something to make us all aware.

Sunday Afternoon BBQ In conjunction with the advert opposite Sitting with my parents and their neighbours a few weeks ago, we were discussing the decline in exchange rates and higher inflation and the effects it had on them and the subject of Equity Release was thrown onto the table. They all know what I do for a living and all eyes fell on me to answer their questions. What I found incredible was the diversity of understanding by individuals armed with titbits of information and how dangerous this can be. Opinions differ I agree but when 2 of the neighbours nearly started fisticuffs because they were both “right.” again all eyes turned to me when the questions was posed “what do you expect from your parents estate?” My parents are sat there next to me, how uncomfortable… and I thought hang on, I donʼt need anything, I have far more than they had at my age so I answered a question with a question “what did your parents leave you and how did you feel about that?” Phew. Remember Iʼm in my forties and my parents are in their sixties and the neighbours were all between 50ish to 80ish years old, sorry Bob 79. This quietened down the conversation and had everyone thinking. Answers included a pocketknife, a quilt, some medals etc and the consensus was that they were all happy with what they had as it was something they could remember them by, so why are they all struggling to cope and not enjoying their time just so their children can have houses all paid for and money when they fall off their perch ? Everyone sat there, had started with nothing and had done well, why canʼt their children do the same ? In fact most of them already had more than their parents. I know that I would rather my parents have a comfortable life in Spain, doing what they want and if I get nothing when that time arrives, I have no problem with that.
In conversations with those same neighbours over the next few weeks, most had spoken to their children and the same thing was said, so please donʼt take it for granted that we Brits all leave everything to our kids, where did this new trend come from, what did you get ? when did all this start ? Did we ever get to go on that world cruise….

ISLE of TABARCA A wonderful place for a day trip
On page 53 you will find Pennyʼs story on her trip over to the Isle of Tabarca with the Tabarca Taxi as advertised on page 27, and after 6 years of promising ourselves that we would go over to the island. We decided on a lovely calm sunny day that we would also go, but we went on one of the large Isle of Tabarca glass bottomed boats that are in Santa Pola harbour.
So after buying our tickets from the kiosk near the boats we climbed aboard.
As we set off, we passed the marina and boat yards then headed out into open water. Sailing parallel with the Santa Pola coastline we headed for the Island. Just before landing, the boat

stopped so we could see all the fish that came along side to eat the bread that was thrown overboard for them. We then carried on and docked

beside the jetty which happens to be in the centre of the Island. The island is a Nature and Marine Reserve and is about 2kms long. After a lovely stroll all round the island and a good meal in one of the restaurants we headed back to the jetty to wait for the boat home.

POLITICS AND GRAN ALACANT Unfortunately politics can divide the nicest people.
We at this magazine rely very heavily on information from the Town Hall, to pass on to our readers and keep you up to date with all the latest news that will effect us all on Gran Alacant. Before, during, and since the last elections, we have always got on very well with those that supply us with our information, who are members of the PP Party. Mainly from Loreto Cascales, the Councillor of Gran Alacant, who does so much to help us convey all of the news to you. We have always found Loreto, and members of the Town Hall, including the Mayor very good and helpful to us, so much so, that we see many of them now as friends. PERSONAL not POLITICAL.
On the other side of the fence, however, is the PSOE Party. One of their members mentioned in the PP Party advert last month being Juani Soriano. You may or may not agree with her party´s politics, but a nicer person you could never meet. When we all come to Gran Alacant, our biggest worry is no doubt that of illness, what do we do, where do we go for help especially with the Spanish language barrier. This need never be a problem. Call in to the Municipal Office, go into the first door on the right before the stairs. There you will be met by Juani Soriano, one of the most helpful, friendliest people here on Gran Alacant. She will always be on hand to sort Doctors appointments for you.

A TAXI TO TABARCA. Inspired by the advert in June’s GA Advertiser, a group of seven of us booked the Tabarca Taxi for the first Friday in June. We arranged to leave the harbour at Santa Pola at 11:30 am and would let Manuel know what time we wanted to return. In the event, there were 11 of us in the party, but, not at all put out even though he had two other passengers, Manuel was quite happy to take us all. Unfortunately, one of our party was a bit “dodgy” on her legs, and was unable to clamber into the boat. A word of warning here, there is no gang plank or steps, and the taxi itself is a semi-rigid inflatable, so its not really suitable for anyone with mobility problems. This problem meant that our group was reduced by 3, but at least the remaining passengers had a bit more room. The trip across took about 30 minutes and was quite bumpy due to the sea conditions, but on arrival at Tabarca it was easier to get ashore up the steps. Manuel agreed to return at 2:30, which meant no hanging around till 4:45 for the next ferry back to Santa Pola. Strictly speaking, the island is called “Nueva Tabarca” as the original Tabarca is off the coast of Morocco and was part of Spain for many years. When Tabarca returned to Moroccan sovereignty the Spanish Catholic population were resettled on the island off Santa Pola. “Our” Tabarca was originally a lookout against Barbary Pirates and then further fortified during Napoleonic times. The remains of the old fortifications can still be seen, and within these walls are old houses and shaded squares. Some of these houses are now being restored presumably as holiday homes, although there is still a small resident population on the island. There are a number of good restaurants by the harbour, specialising in fish dishes, and a few other restaurants inside the walls. The whole island, and the sea surrounding it, is a protected area. Fishing, boating and diving in the sea is strictly regulated and almost half of Tabarca is open heath land. There is a museum in the block like building by the harbour and the beach, though small, is safe and can get very crowded. The island is well worth a visit, and going by Taxi, makes a very pleasant, and different, journey.

Only 5 minutes from Gran Alacant. Take the N332 towards Alicante. The first right signed El Altet takes you to a roundabout. Take the first exit. When you arrive at the first set of traffic lights turn left. Straight over the next roundabout, then you will find Eurocars on the very next roundabout.

Welcome to the monthly computing column brought to you by Dave the Computerman (MCSE)
Dave The Computerman.
User Accounts Each person who uses the computer can, and indeed, should have their own user account. By doing so, each user can choose how the computer looks and functions, and they can have their own messenger settings, mail accounts, internet phone account etc. Each user can change the theme of the desktop, including colours, pictures, and sounds used. Individual accounts can also improve the security of the computer and add protection to accounts which may require parental controls. Parental controls give the administrator the means to decide when the machine is used and which websites and which games are played on the computer. Parental controls come built in to Windows Vista. To set up a new account, go to Control Panel and click on User Accounts, and then add users. Set up the type of account required, remembering that an administrator´s account can do anything on a computer and is not normally required to surf the internet, write letters, nor use messenger. The Administrator account should only be used to install or delete software, or carry out system maintenance. If an ordinary user downloads a virus, it will be difficult to run the programme, and thus difficult for the virus to infect the system, but if an administrator downloads and runs a virus-laden programme, there are no built-in safeguards set to prevent the virus from running. Set a password on all accounts to prevent intrusion of the account. However any password ONLY works on this computer. If the hard disk is removed, or another operating system is used to start the computer, any password protection will be lost. If you have files that must never be accessed by anyone else, use encryption software to protect those files. These files are then protected, but do not forget the password, because without it the files will be impossible to open. Complaints about AVG 8 Users used to AVG 7 have been contacting me complaining that they do not know when, Or how long AVG is taking to update. To see the download state, double-click on the AVG icon on the desktop and click on the Update now link on the left-hand edge. This will begin the download and you will be able to see the state of the download. New settings for a Windows Vista based laptop The Mobile PC link on the control panel is a single location where the computer´s settings can be adjusted. By reducing the brightness of the screen, volume level, and switching off the wireless connector when not requires, you will lengthen the life of the battery whilst it is not connected to the mains. Once plugged into the mains, you can return the computer to its highest performance setting. The power saver setting maximises the battery life by lowering system performance. It is recommended that a user uses the battery to power a laptop for at lest 25% of its working time, thus if you use the laptop every day, run it on the battery for two of those days, and let the battery run down, thus the battery charging circuit will remain functional. I hope that you find the column useful and if you have any further questions, or need assistance please call me on 637 554 579 or contact me at gacomputerman@yahoo.eszx

BAILE BUS COMPANY
...will again this year (Starting July) be running a bus, round and round Gran Alacant. It will include Los Arenales, BUT NOT Alicante or Santa Pola. Their normal service will still cover these routes.
The service, will enable us all to get on or off at all parts of our urbanisation and will include the beaches. Look for the bus with the signs in the window Gran Alacant Los Arenales.
Many people last year were not aware of this service.

The
entertainment SCENE in and around
gran alacant The Yellow Submarine is a flash and trendy new bar located on the bottom floor (below sea level) of the Carabasi strip in Gran Alacant. Designed for dancing, this bar has ample dancefloor space to create an almost club-like atmosphere. From the outside it could be mistaken for a Beatles tribute museum as not a beat escapes from the acoustic sound
proofing. Yet when the friendly doormen open the hatch, the fun begins. Live D.Js, an up for it crowd and a multitude of 2 for 1 and free promotional offers all add up to a cool night out. The venue opens around 8 in the evening and can also remain open till 8 in the morning, for the die hards. I think the location is ideal for younger people who live around or are holidaying in the Carabasi area, as it makes for a great venue to continue the night after a pub crawl of the established bars on the strip. Roll on the summer madness! THE VERDICT: BAR PRICES: Varies with the offers mentioned above. 1-10 RATING: 9 RETURN VISIT: For sure! TASTYFOX PROMOTIONS
