The location of both of the above businesses can be seen on our map on page 12 An elderly Italian man who lived on the outskirts of Rimini, Italy, went to the local church for confession. When the priest slid open the panel in the confessional, The man said: 'Father, during World War II, a beautiful Jewish woman from our neighborhood knocked urgently on my door and asked me to hide her from the Nazis So I hid her in my attic.' The priest replied: That was a wonderful thing you did, and you have no need to confess that.' 'There is more to tell, Father... She started to repay me with sexual favours. This happened several times a week, and sometimes twice on Sundays.'

The priest said, 'That was many years ago and by doing what you did, you placed the two of you in great danger, but two people under those circumstances can easily succumb to the weakness of the flesh. However, if you are truly sorry for your actions, you are indeed forgiven.'

'Thank you, Father. That's a great load off my mind. I do have one more question.' 'And what is that?' asked the priest. 'Should I tell her the war is over?''

Hello, This month we are going to look at our feet. Summer is here, our feet are more exposed and we tend to think about them at this time. Feet are an interesting part of the human anatomy, one of the most useful and unfortunately the most neglected parts of our body are our feet. We use them continuously, strain them walk for miles on them, they take the weight of our body and yet we forget to take care of their basic needs and comforts. There are so many elements of everyday living that are absolutely torturous for our feet. For example, our local bar and restaurant staff spend many hours standing on their feet. Feet are often taken for granted until they start to hurt and reject the burdon we place upon them. Lack of good care for feet result in many ailments, such as Bunions, Tinea Pedis, and Ingrowing toe nails. People with diabetes have an increased risk for infections. Therefore, it is important that our feet are well cared for. For all of us it is not just the summer

months, but all year round that we need to take care of them. A bunion is a harmless swelling of the joint of the big toe which is particularly common in middle-aged woman. It usually affects both feet. As the joint swells, the skin over it becomes hard, red and tender. The big toe usually becomes displaced, turning inwards towards the other toes. Infections such as Tinea Pedis commonly know as (Athlete’s Foot) this is a form of ringworm which affects the skin of the foot. The fungus invades between the toes and can spread to the soles and side of the feet. The first signs are itching, flaking, cracking and weeping of the skin between the toes. It is imperative that this is treated. The local pharmacy carry powder and creams to treat this, however, if it persists you must consult your GP Ingrowing toenails, the nails of the big toes, are the ones which are most commonly affected. Instead of moving along the nail bed in the nail groves, the sides of the nail cut into the nail wall causing skin damage. Inflammation, swelling and pus often occur; the condition has to be treated medically. The two most common causes are ill

If you have ever had a professional pedicure you know how amazing if feels to have your feet taken care of, how relaxing and nice it is to have them

INSURING A MOTOR VEHICLE IN SPAIN In Spain, as in most European countriesthere are three types of insurance for your vehicle. Third party (tercero solo), third party, fire and theft (tercero, contra incedios y robo), and fully comprehensive (todo riesgo). All insurance must include the minimum public liability. Many companies in Spain will not issue comprehensive insurance cover or even fire and theft for vehicles that are 10 years or more. It is possible to insure a foreign plated

46

car here in Spain, but not with a Spanish Company. Most of the companies that insure foreign plated vehicles are based in Gibraltar. When you buy a Spanish car from a third party, they may offer to sell the insure to you as it is the vehicle that is insured and not the person. However, in the event of a claim being made to the insurance company they will only pay out to the named policy holder. Therefore, you could have paid an extra few hundred euros for someone elses insurance, paid a lot of money for the vehicle and then are unfortunately involved in an accident. There would be no guarantee of compensation. And as we all know, Insurance Companies will look for any reason not to pay a claim. If your insurance has expired,

writing about what to do in the event of an accident. Until then SAFE DRIVING Tom and Debbie Milligan LEGAL SOLUTIONS

In the last several months there was a change in the law regarding Spanish Insurance cover. You are no longer required to carry the insurance policy in the vehicle, it is now sufficient to only have the receipt of payment from the bank. The Guardia Civil Trafico vehicles are all now equipped with a computerised system that identifies the registration number of Spanish registered vehicles and will automatically inform the Police as to whether the car has insurance cover. WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge The bird in this picture is the rare White-headed Duck at the Clot, and his story could easily be made into a film, with murder, intrigue, drama and a fair smattering of sex thrown in – why, even Hollywood would be interested as one of the protagonists is American. Cast your mind back to the last century, when during the second of the two disagreements between the UK and Germany, Britain was overrun with American troops with the consequence that a large number of British Ladies were either whisked back to the USA as GI brides, or left with the inevitable result of some late-night shenanagins. Around the same time, the eminent British naturalist and all-round duck fan Sir Peter Scott decided it would be nice if he introduced some foreign species to his wildfowl reserve at Slimbridge. One of the species he collected was an American one called the Ruddy Duck. Unfortunately, they took to the UK like a duck to water (as it were) and many of them escaped the confines of the reserve and a thriving UK population ensued. Being American, they liked to travel, and found that there was a nice corner of South-Western Europe where some of their distant relatives were living – the White-headed Duck. The female White-headed Ducks were obviously impressed (as were the British Ladies) by their American visitors, so much so that several hybrid ducks began to appear. The Spanish Authorities involved with conservation were outraged by this (as were the British Ladies mums) and demanded that the British Government do something about it. Thus began the hotly-disputed process of shooting the British-bred Ruddy Ducks so that they could not escape to Spain and ruin the purity of the White-headed Duck bloodline. The arguments still rage about all this, but at least the Spanish White-headed Duck seems to be safe for the moment, with an increasing population from the horrendous lows of the 1970’s when there were only 22 birds in the whole of Spain, to today’s estimate of 2,500. The Clot and El Hondo reserve are vitally important areas for the future of this species. The chap in my picture is a male – can you sense the misery in his attitude as he contemplates the fact that his missus might at this very moment be getting it on with an American visitor? Or perhaps he doesn’t like the Spanish name he has been given of Malvasía Cabeciblanca, which very roughly translates as grape-coloured whitehead. So when you next see one on the Clot, spare a little thought for him. See you next month.

A Glasgow man walks into a bank in Glasgow and asks for the loan officer. He tells the loan officer that he is going to Australia on business for two weeks and needs to borrow £5,000. The bank officer tells him that the bank will need some form of security for the loan, so the Glasgow lad hands over the keys and documents of new Ferrari parked on the street in front of the bank. He produces the Log Book and everything checks out. The loan officer agrees to accept the car as collateral for the loan. The bank's Manager and its officers all enjoy a good laugh at the rough looking Glaswegian for using a £120,000 Ferrari as collateral against a £5000 loan. An employee of the bank then drives the Ferrari into the bank's underground garage and parks it there. Two weeks later, the Glaswegian returns, repays the £5,000 and the interest, which comes to £15.41. The loan officer says, "Sir, we are very happy to have had your business, and this transaction has worked out very nicely, but we are a little puzzled. While you were away, we checked you out and found that you are a multi millionaire. What puzzles us is, why would you bother to borrow "£5,000" ? The Glaswegian replies: "Where else in Glasgow can I park my car for two weeks for only £15.41 and expect it to be there when I return'"

Dave The Computerman. Welcome to the monthly computing column brought to you by David the Computerman (MCSE).

Computer Memory I often visit clients who complain of a slow computer, and I say to them that they require more memory. They then tell me that they have deleted lots of photos and documents in the mistaken belief that this will help. Documents and photos are kept on the Hard Disk, and are not kept in memory until they are required. So, what is memory, and how is it used? Your computer is made up of lots of individual parts (the hardware) and programmes (the software). When you turn on the computer, the motherboard has a simple programme on it called the BIOS which tells the processor/CPU/chip what is attached to it and how to interact with the hardware. You will often see the lights on the keyboard, mouse and CD/DVDs flash at start up. These devices are input devices and the chip now checks to see if there is indeed an input from any one of these devices. If not, the chip has to search for the operating system, which is often, but not always, on the hard disk. At this point Windows loads up and begins to transfer the programmes that you use into memory. Your desktop is loaded into memory and all the icons (shortcuts) on your desktop, and down by the clock are also loaded into memory. It is all these little shortcuts, and programmes, that load themselves at start up that fill the memory, thus leaving your system with less and less system memory to use. Programmes such as Firefox are held on the hard disk and when you click on the icon to open it the chip asks where Firefox is? The hard disk replies “on me,” the chip then asks for it to be sent to memory where the computer can easily use the

programme as required. If you have too many programmes running, or one is hogging the memory, then the computer will slow to a crawl. Check to see if your anti-virus software is running a scan, as this can dramatically slow a computer down. This has very little to do with the size of the hard disk. (The hard disk must have at least 15% space free to allow it to defragment it). Windows XP needs at least 256Mb of memory (512Mb preferred), to run. Windows Vista needs 1Gb (1000Mb) to run but 2Gb is best. Thus a memory upgrade is the cheapest and easiest way of speeding up a computer. There are currently three types of memory in use today. SDRAM is the oldest and is now very difficult to get hold of. DDR memory is in computers over three years old, and DDR2 is in newer computers. DDR3 is out now, but is in short supply and is seriously expensive. All memory is speed rated and it is important to match the speed of memory to the requirements of your motherboard and chip. Memory prices have dropped dramatically over the past five years, but after one of the five memory manufacturers went bust at the start of the year, who knows how long this will last. I hope that you find the column useful and if you have any further questions, or need assistance please call me on 637 554 579 or contact me via email at gacomputerman@yahoo.es.

“NEW” DISEASES AND CLIMATE CHANGE We all have heard about climate change and the disasters it may produce within the following years if we can’t manage to moderate its effects and protect the environment in a more efficient way. We have been told about thaws, big droughts, deserts getting bigger and bigger, etc, but not as much about problems which are already affecting us, caused in one hand by climate change itself, but in the other hand by globalization of the communications. Those problems are related to transmission of some diseases

(mostly parasitic ones), and reactivation of some other diseases which were practically eradicated from the first world a few years ago. One good example would be the Leishmaniosis, the famous mosquito disease, a pathology which may also affect people (a very uncommon possibility, and non related at all with the fact of living close to ill dogs), and whose percentage of cases has been increased in some places of Spain from 6 to 9.5% in just a few years, and even taking into account the

prevention we provide nowadays to our pets is the most efficient we’ve ever had. Leishmaniosis and all the other “vectorial” diseases, that is, the ones whose transmission must be performed by a vector (normally flea, tick or mosquito), are increasing the number of cases according to life conditions of vectors: during coldest months (average temperature below 18ºC) a smaller number of cases are reported because vectors normally don’t survive low temperatures, but when temperatures rise over 18ºC mosquitoes become active and start carrying the disease from dog to dog. As you can imagine, not every mosquito species transmit every vectorial disease. Due to this, the distribution of vectorial diseases will vary depending on the weather conditions of every zone: the better conditions for the vector, the higher

number of cases. This is very important, for example, for importing/exporting dogs: taking to the UK an infected with Leishmaniosis dog WON’T spread the disease, because no Phlebotomus (the Mediterranean mosquito species which is the vector of this disease), no transmission. For these reasons, the best way to fight against vectorial diseases is controlling the vectors, which consists of using preventive antiparasitic treatments for stopping the spreading of these diseases. continued next month Liliana Aldeguer Cerdán col 793 English translation by Sergio Reina Esteban col 747 Do you want us to write aboutsomething specific you would like to know about your pet? Silver Jubilee of the

Inter Club

This week saw the twenty-fifth anniversary of Gran Alacantʼs Inter Club, one of the regionʼs oldest social gatherings for UK ex-pats, together with, and as the name suggests, friends of other nationalities. The full registered name of the club is the International Club of Arenales, but this full name is seldom used these days, especially as it is now based in Gran Alacant. On Thursday night, over seventy guests celebrated the longevity and continued success of this popular club, which continues to meet every Thursday evening at the Restaurant Marie Jose in Av. Noruega in Gran Alacant.

After an excellent meal, provided by Maria and Paco, there was a short ʻSilver Jubileeʼ quiz, and then guests danced into ʻtomorrowʼ to the sounds of yesteryear provided by popular duo Ameritz.

Guests of honour for the evening were the original president of the club, Jim Feary together with Jill his charming wife, who were presented with a gift from current President Bob Newby, and Jill, his wife. Jim entertained the guests with a speech that wandered down memory lane, reminding everyone that when the club was formed there was only one shop anywhere in the area, no transport facilities, only one or two restaurants and bars, and Gran Alacant was just a figment of someoneʼs

future fertile imagination.

However, there were many characters in the area, and Jim brought smiles from all with his accounts of their various exploits, some of which may be too risqué to print here!

Jim, who was President for the first twelve years of the Inter Clubʼs existence, outlined the way in which the club evolved, and giving great examples of where membership of the club not only provided a social outlet, but also a support system for those in need. Currently, and for many years past, the club has raised funds for a local charity, Cotolengo, which is run by nuns and helps both the severely physically and mentally less able. The club continues with weekly cash collections from members, donations from club funds, and collections of clothing and other items that can be sold or used.

Apart from the regular Thursday dinner-dances, dinner-quizzes etc., there is also a thriving painting group who meet weekly, and on the 28th May, a car rally is being held in the afternoon prior to the normal Thursday evening function.

Why not meet new friends by ringing one of the committee members, Bob, Francis or Jan on 966697439, 9666695052, 966697754 respectively; you wonʼt be sorry you did. The photo below shows the President. his lady and the guests of honour, the club's first President Jim Feary and his lady Jill

Hello, My neighbours and I were horrified to find the train had gone up from 1 Euro to 1.50. this is a 50% increase and all being pensioners not very happy! When the train first started it was so handy to hop on it instead of taking the bus now the bus is cheaper! It seems that the tourist is being catered for (especially where prices are concerned) after all this is a residential area and not a tourist resort, why anyone would want to come here for a holiday (unless visiting ) I cannot imagine, I certainly would not come here for a holiday! We have a few suggestions which maybe could be passed on via yourselves to the train management. A season ticket for say 3 or 6 months. Reduced rates for pensioners. Reduced rates for residents or people who own property here. One or two stops a 1 Euro and 1.50 for the full trip (mostly tourists take the full trip.) A book of tickets at a cheaper price which could be used as and when required. We miss our trips on the train and the friendly drivers but for the moment all we can do is wave as the train passes by! From Annie and her neighbours.

Hi Barry and Sandra, As an IT consultant can I firstly congratulate you on your website and your "web based page turning magazine" which is really quite groovy. I do enjoy being able to keep up to date with the news in Gran Alacant from rainy Ireland. My question is, is there any possibility of the council reopening the pathway that ran from the Carabassi Complex through the El Clot nature reserve to Los Arenales. I don't have a car in Spain and this was my short cut to both the beach and to Los Arenales itself. I know the original path was not a properly maintained route but it was always very busy. I had presumed they were awaiting funds to improve it, not abandon it. I'm sure the commercial units would also appreciate the reopening of the path as it would allow additional business to come from the new apartment complexes in Los Arenales. Cheers, Cormac

Lessons of the Month

www.spanishlanguagesite.com Preposition ´a´ You won’t be speaking Spanish for very long before you come across this preposition. You usually start with the meaning of ‘to’ when used with the verb ‘to go’, ‘ir’. It is handy in this respect because it means ‘to’ when saying ‘to go to a place’, and ‘to be going to do something’. Here are a couple of examples: 1) ‘Yesterday I went to the beach’ – ‘ayer fui a la playa’ 2) ‘Tomorrow I’m going to eat an omelette’ – ‘mañana voy a comer una tortilla’ It also means ‘to’ when introducing a named indirect object pronoun, as in ‘I gave the present to James’ – ‘di el regalo a Jaime’ There are other uses, though: 1) It is often used to connect a verb with a following infinitive: a. ‘Ha venido a hablar conmigo’ – ‘he has come to speak to me’ b. ‘Comencé a llorar’ – ‘I started to cry’ 2) It is used in expressions of time to mean ‘at’: a. ‘Salió a las 4’ – ‘he went out at 4 o’clock’ 3) It is often used to show how something is done: a. ‘Fueron a pie’ – ‘they went on foot’ b. ‘Lo hicieron a mano’ – ‘they did it by hand’ 4) It is used to introduce a direct object that is a person, but since this causes especial difficulty, I want to deal with this use of ‘a’ another time.
