We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news, including that from the Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005. Another winter storm hit the area during the month of May. Thunder, rain and hail (yet again) caused havoc. Picture right of Santa Pola, courtesy of our friends at the Informacion newspaper and the left picture shows the storm brewing over GA, pic supplied by Pete Dolphin.

ARE YOU BOTHERED?

4

about the amount of dog fouling on Gran Alacant. We are running a campaign to persuade the Town Hall to take on a dog warden. Every owner caught could receive a large fine which would pay for the warden. You can email us to have your name added to the list, or, go to Dick Turpins Bar in Sierra Mar or O始Duills Irish Bar and add your name to our petition. The location of O始Duills is among all of our advertisers on our map of Gran Alacant, at the back of our magazine.

SIGHTINGS OF JELLYFISH

The Council of Santa Pola has started up an emergency plan of action in the event of sightings of banks of jellyfish near the coast. The councilmen of Beaches and Citizen Security, Javier Baile and Antonio Andres Garci'a, respectively, met with the different related agents, Local Police, Guardia Civil, General Services, Brotherhood of Fishermen, Municipal service of cleaning and Agency of Local Development, to mark out the strategy to follow. In the first place contact the nautical zones, general services, Police, Civil defense, Guardia Civil,

Marine Service of the Guardia Civil of Alicante, The Rescue and first aid of Santa Pola, councils of Police, Beaches, Environment and

email: santapola.policia@gmail.com aagbaile@gmail.com santaola.cjcomercio07@cv.gva.es

Cleaning, Brotherhood of Fishermen, service of cleaning, and the Institute of Ecology of the Coast of Alicante. In the case of sighting of jellyfish, telephone one of the following numbers: 670 03 66 85 / 607 44 95 43 / 610 29 20 96 and/or

jmazon@adlsantapola.es

The first thing that would happen in case of sighting would be the hoisting of the red flag on the beaches, that prohibits swimming, as well as the specific flag with the image of the jellyfish.

The mayor of Santa Pola, Miguel Zaragozza, has visited the facilities of the boat museum “Esteban González”, an important cultural and tourist project whose objective is to perpetuate the memory of the marine tradition of the town by recreating the life of the fishermen on the high seas on board a fishing boat. Accompanied on the visit by the Mayor were the councilman of the School-Factory Jorge Perelló and the director of the School-Factory Maria Jose Bristle, as well as the technicians and professors responsible for the project. The mayor said that the boat museum “Esteban González” has almost reached it´s conclusion, and this great project is going to allow the culture and the history of Santa Pola to be shown from that time, the boat museum is by the entrance of the port and next to the Virgin of the

5

Carmen. Once finished, the recreation of the way the fishermen lived will be able to be seen, how they carried out their tasks, and how the boat was run. The boat is something great, mainly because it has been done by a group of young people of Santa Pola who have been taught professions, some of which are almost on the verge of disappearing, they have be allowed to work with equipment, that gives them important values like the respect and the discipline to prepare them for a future that is far from easy. This boat is going to allow the people who come to Santa Pola to continue savoring the marine atmosphere and local people also to see in dry dock where their husbands, their grandparents, their parents and their brothers worked. This article updates past pictures and reports we have included in a previous magazine. Last month we reported the gas cylinder explosion at a property on Gran Alacant. The unfortunate accident has left 65 year old, Bengt Ageskog, recuperating back in Sweden after very good care in Alicante hospital. Daughters Pia and Linda would like to thank all of those involved, for their wonderful help. Particuarly the two policemen who went in to save their father, also the ambulance and fire brigade services. Loreto has asked if Linda would put a thank you into a letter, which can then be presented at one of the Council meetings.

Big news is that the new Health Centre construction has been passed by the Valencian Counsellor of Public Health and building will begin at the end of this year. Location is marked on our map of Gran Alacant.

6

We have been asked to find out if car boot sales could be started up on Gran Alacant. Initially Loreto sees no reason why not. A letter of proposal would have to be taken into the office on Gran Alacant. Is there anybody who would like to be involved in organising this project and presenting the letter of

objectives. Loreto will then put it to a council meeting for approval. The new market area will not start work until at least the end of this summer.

The train which may be up and running by the time you read this. It is all painted up and ready to go, just the paperwork to finalise. Loreto says it will be well worth the waiting when you see just how good it is.

The question of future hotels on Gran Alacant. Two plots are available on the new General Plan. One is between Mercadona and the N332, where the previous temporary school was cited. The other is on a

plot of land at the top of the hill towards the lighthouse. It is hoped that a hotel will be a 5 star construction. The plot at the top of the hill has laid

idle since the previous 1985 plans and which nobody has ever taken up as it is a very large plot. It has now been reoffered to attract builders with the incentive of half the plot for a hotel and the other half for housing. All profits from any sale of this land will go to the Town Hall for help in future projects.

We mentioned that the re start of the golf apartments by the N332 have begun again. There is no news of the golf course commencing any time soon.

The venture to build a new bus station in Santa Pola is now held up waiting for the plans for the new tram line to be finalised. There is a problem of no lighting when you exit left at the first roundabout and first left again. Much new building is re commencing there, but a conflict between MASA (the builder) and Iberdrola (the electric company) is stopping the lighting from functioning. This area will not be handed over to the Town Hall until all of the houses are built.

One of the emails to us brought up the thorny problem of addresses again. We have spoken of this before in other areas of GA. The plans held at the Town Hall show all of these areas correct addresses. They all start Calle Canaries then have a block number. You can ask to see these plans at our Council Office, or ask the president of your community to provide it for you as they should also have these plans. Loreto is quite willing to meet up with anyone, so she can describe it all to you, just go to the Council office and make an appointment. We have said before how important it is to check your correct address, as the map shown here is the one used by all of

the emergency services if you phone

them for help.

The area that contains all of the villas around the Bowls Club, has now had the main streets (marked in white) officially handed over to the Town Hall. Those streets marked in white have been handed over, the other side streets are the responsibility of the community. The plans for areas such as these are

produced before building work begins.

We have been asked about the new walkway/cycle way that the Town Hall have made more accessible to us, all the way through to Santa Pola. We hope to run a feature on this in our next issue, but will mention one or two facts about the work. At the moment it runs from the top of Gran Alacant (by the lighthouse), down to the bad bend between the post office crossroad and the GA Centre. It also goes on through to Santa Pola. This will never be

7

The black dotted line shows the route of the cycle track, some of which is finished. The exact route of the red line is yet to be decided, down toward the Clot. The black route also heads off through to Santa Pola. (more about that next month)

converted into a road for cars, but always for walking and cycling. Eventually the idea is to extend this walkway from the dangerous bend, all the way down to the area of the clot. (shown on the map to the left). All of this is to be funded jointly, 1/3rd each, by the Town Hall, the Tourism Plan from the state Government and the Government of Valencia. This fund has been set up to promote all sports activities.

You will see that we have had an email about pick pockets at the GA market, and we should say, all of the markets in the area. It is very difficult for the police to catch these people “at it”, so please take care. A new policy has been brought in at the Town Hall. Where fines of any description were sometimes difficult to collect, will now go to the Suma Office and will stay as a debt against your house. This will help insure that all fines are paid, and

therefore well worth enforcing.

A start is now being made preparing the ground for the new allotments down the hill by the “Clot, (shown left) at a cost of 50,000 euros. No prices have been released yet, but after they have, there will be a publicised draw for ownership if the number of plots are over subscribed.

Just to elaborate a bit more on some news we brought to you last month. The Town Hall feels that Avenida Mediterraneo (shown on the map left) will become more and more important as time goes by. It is the main road to our wonderful beaches for most people living at the top of Gran Alacant. The road will be made abit narrower and the pavements wider. There will be benches, rubbish bins, trees (where space allows) and generally the whole area spruced up. The bus stop area will be made a great deal more accessible too.

MABS has extra help available. If you need to go to have a Mammogram and do not know the procedure or do not want to go on your own, we have a volunteer who is happy to make the appointment for you in the first place and then to go with you on your initial visit to have the mammogram done which is at Altabix in Elche. She can also act as your translator but you will need to have transport as she does not drive. The visit can take from 1 to 1and-a- half hours. She does ask for just 10 euros to cover her time etc. She really can make your visit stress free. If you would like more details please ring me Jan on 966 697 754 or Angela on 616 415 239, and we can put you in touch with her. Volunteers for MABS are not paid but are able to claim out of pocket expenses ie telephone and petrol and for special services as offered above.

You are probably aware how we at the magazine, help to promote our advertisers on the local Gran Alacant forums. One of the forum owners was caught up in the recent ash scare, and after awhile just had to get back to the UK. His only car out here was an old Rover 400. The journey, every day was followed by his story on the local forums, and attracted a great deal of attention and comment. We have decided to run it as a story over the next few months. .As it works out at nearly 4,000 words, here are the first 400, we hope you will enjoy the saga.

Two Men, Gran Alacant and a Rover 400

I have just returned from Spain by car total miles 1500 door to door and I have to say we had the time of our lives...the car is an old Rover 400 and it did us proud heaving us along the motorways for two solid days ...we laughed so much I felt I must tell our story ....but I must thank the many new friends made in Gran Alacant over the last week with cancelled flights and money running out for many people.. a great community spirit evolved not just from the Brits I might add ......with little help from airlines and Governments alike meetings sprung up all over the place where everyone was helping each other and exchanging notes.......

Having two flights cancelled I thought it was time to bring our Rover 400 out of it始s semi-retirement ....it始s many trips to the beach had left the poor old car some what heavier that it was ....sand on the floor and in the boot we felt gave the car character so we left it in ...although we did brush the seats down. It was decided that I would drive and take a lady friend of ours who始s medication had run out and my young son and my sons friend who had come on holiday with us.....they were told to travel light due to the fact the car was already over weight from the sand ....this left one seat in the car spare ....who was to take that seat?

Well we had one free seat in the car and I set about asking around to see if anybody wanted the spare place ...well, up stepped Mike Cook who lives just a few houses away from me in Spain ...Mike had spent a couple of nights in our company in particular the Hot Chocolate night at Los Belgas.....he had just spent 300euros on a coach back to England which surprise surprise did not turn up ....in fact nor has his refund they promised him (watch out for that one) Mike is a sales Manager for Mercedes-Benz of Southampton so I thought he was the ideal man to be my co-driver as the Rover and Mercedes cars are very alike ....turns out Mike prefers B.M.W cars so I was a little out on that one.

Drive carefully. It's not only cars that can be "recalled" by their maker.

32

A minister parked his car in a no-parking zone in a large city because he was short of time and couldn't find a space with a meter. Then he put a note under the windshield wiper that read: "I have circled the block 10 times. If I don't park here, I'll miss my appointment.

Forgive us our trespasses." When he returned, he found a citation from a police officer along with this note I've circled this block for 10 years. If I don't give you a ticket I'll lose my job. Lead us not into temptation.

For Adoption

This Siamese cross cat is approx 14 months, she has been

living on urbanisation Finca Gold in Algorfa for many months. She is very

sociable and loves a cuddle. Unfortunately the lady feeding her is

returning to the UK and so we are urgently looking for a new home for her. She has beautiful turquoise eyes.

This dog has been seen wandering around the beach area close to the village of La Marina. A lady walking her dog in the area, after seeing him there for so long decided to rescue him. She was not able to keep him in her house and so she contacted us. He has a delightful personality, a very gentle and easy going

character. He likes to be near to people. He is just 11 months old and walks good on a lead. He is currently in a foster home and available for adoption. We have named him Guapo.

Lucky was seen for many weeks living in a water storage tank depot close to an urbanisation. He was being cared for by a worker that visited the location

regularly. However, when he was not there the dog kept escaping and wandering

onto a busy main road. He is 11 months old and very appealing. He loves everyone and is very trusting.

We named her Sasha and she immediately responded to it, she is 2 years old. She

loves the cat that she is with, in her foster home. She is a lovely natured dog and so gentle, not greedy and very patient. Her fosterer tells us that she is good with the other dogs and with children too. She is not fussy about the food you give her, she walks very well on the lead and does not pull. All in all she is a very good and obedient dog.

A woman comes home and tells her husband, 'Remember those headaches I've been having all these years? Well, they're gone.' 'No more headaches?' the husband asks, 'What happened?' His wife replies, 'Margie referred me to a hypnotist & he told me to stand in front of a mirror, Stare at myself and repeat, ' I do not have a headache ' ' I do not have a headache ' ' I do not have a headache ' Well, it Worked! The headaches are all gone.' Well , that is wonderful' proclaims the husband. His wife then says, 'You know, you haven't been exactly a ball of fire in the bedroom these last few years, why don't you go see the hypnotist and see if he can do anything for that? Reluctantly, the husband agrees to try it. Following his appointment, the husband comes home, rips off his clothes, picks up his wife and carries her into the bedroom. He puts her on the bed and says, 'Don't move, I'll be right back.' He goes into the Bathroom and comes back a few minutes later and jumps into bed and makes passionate love to his wife like never before. His wife says, 'WOW! - that was wonderful! The husband says, 'Don't move! I will be right back. He goes back into the bathroom, comes back and round two was even better than the first time. The wife sits up and her head is spinning 'OH MY GOD' she proclaims. Her husband again says, 'Don't move, I'll be right back..' With that, he goes back in the bathroom. This time, his wife quietly follows him and there, in the bathroom, she sees him standing at the mirror and saying. 'She's not my wife ' 'She's not my wife ' 'She's not my wife ' . 'She's not my wife ' His funeral service will be held on Saturday

SICK LEAVE I urgently needed a few days off work, But, I knew the Boss would not allow me to take leave. I thought that maybe if I acted 'Crazy' Then he would tell me to take a few days off. So, I hung upside-down on the ceiling and made funny noises. My co-worker (who's blonde) asked me what I was doing. I told her that I was pretending to be a light bulb, so, that the Boss might think I was 'Crazy' and give me a few days off. A few minutes later the Boss came into the office and asked, 'What in the name of good GOD are you doing?' I told him I was a light bulb. He said, 'You are clearly stressed out.' Go home and recuperate for a couple of days.' I jumped down and walked out of the office... When my co-worker (the blonde) followed me, the Boss asked her, '..And where do you think you're going?!'

56

She said, 'I'm going home too. I can't work in the dark.

Hello everyone welcome to the next installment of Massage. Indian Head Massage.

Indian head massage has been used for thousands of years to treat the mind and body. In India Ayurvedic and traditional medicine is as important as orthodox medicine. It aims to treat the whole body so as to maintain a balance between the physical, mental and spiritual. Indian head massage uses and adapts classic Swedish massage techniques for treating the scalp, face, neck and shoulders. It is extremely good and effective for treating stress because it works on the areas of the body most affected e.g. shoulders, upper back, neck and head. In both my full body massages and the half body massage, I alwaysʼ include a head, neck and face massage as head massage has a number of benefits which include, increased joint mobility and flexibility in your neck, arms and shoulders. It reduces tension in the tissue, making them more flexible which minimizes stress on bones and joints. It improves circulation removes waste in particular Lactic Acid. Petrissage movements on the neck and shoulders helps reduce tension, releases tightness in overworked and tense muscles. Stress reduction helps prevent stress induced muscle spasm in the back, neck and shoulders.

Buttock Massage and Exfoliation

Do you want a bottom like all the models? Then a buttock and exfoliation is the answer. This treament consists of a 20 minute workout on the muscles in your buttock, (Gluteus Medius, Gluteus Minimus and Gluteus Maximus) followed by a 10 minute exfoliation of the skin to remove all the dead cells. Clients who have had this treatment have stated that they felt their buttocks were uplifted and felt clean afterwards.

Sports Massage. (This is not a treatment that I do but can be arranged for you)

Sports massage combines the use of Swedish massage with additional more intensive techniques for the prevention and treatment of sports injuries. It can be used as part of a training program to help prevent injury, as part of a warm up for an event such as a marathon and also as a cool down after an event. Like other forms of massage, sport massage helps improve suppleness and flexibility of the joints and muscles. It improves lymph and blood circulation and assists the body systems to function at their optimum levels. Sports massage has more specific effects and benefits such as speeding up the healing of damaged and overworked tissue and muscle. It increases fitness capabilities and performance potential peak performance can be reached faster and, once reached, sustained over longer periods. See you all next month when I will be looking at Thermo Auricular Therapy and the use of the Outoscope. Dott

Santa Pola Club de Futbol By Kevin Rendall A little of everything during May..... .....including a spot of sunburn for yours truly! First things first though, on their final trip up the N332 of the season, Santa Pola CF ventured as far as the very agreeable surroundings of the Alfaz del Pi sports complex and came away with all three points from a hard earned 0-1 victory after a second half penalty by midfielder German saw them home. A week later, and with just two further fixtures to go, Alguena were the next visitors to the Manolo Macia and the game had the look of an end of season fixture that had little riding on it, very much not Dangerman Chema the case for Santa Pola though as a win would have kept alive their play off ambitions. In the end the two tired looking teams served up a goal-less and lifeless draw that put paid to any hopes of a top three finish for the Marineros. It was also one of those deceptively hot Sunday mornings where, without you realising it, the sun is sneaking up to turn everything an attractive red colour!! All good things come to an end, and, in the case of Santa Pola it was their thirteen match unbeaten run which, they tamely surrendered on the road at high flying Horadada. From the off, the team, missing a number of influential regulars absent through injury and suspension, looked out of sorts and were eventually easily beaten for the second time by Horadada. The winning margin, 4-1, somewhat flattered the

60

home side who had to come from behind after Santa Pola opened the scoring against the run of play. Normally, on the final day of the season, every match kicks off at the same time to avoid those contending for promotion or battling relegation knowing beforehand their rivals results. In 2009/10 though, all the major issues were decided in the preceding weeks and the Santa Pola squad had the luxury of a rare Sunday morning lay-in because their final match of the campaign took place the previous evening at home to Jove EspaĂąol. Twenty two year old striker Adriano ended his season in style with a first half hat-trick as Santa Pola easily beat the side from San Vicente 3-1 to end their campaign on a high.

We saw yellow cards, red cards, spectacular goals, jammy goals, great refs, awful refs, nice days, freezing cold days, great sportsmanship, one or two unseemly squabbles and, as luck wouldn’t have it, a couple of horrible injuries. SOME QUESTIONS FROM PET OWNERS This month we’re going to try to answer some of the questions our clients ask us sometimes about different matters: -What happens with that “new” parasitic disease transmitted by snails at the UK? Parasitic diseases usually have a big local specificity, which means every geographical zone has its own parasitic diseases, depending on weather conditions such as temperature and humidity. For example, not every tick species are equal nor transmit the same diseases: Spanish ticks may transmit Ehrlichiosis (a serious rickettsial blood disease), but if you move to Central and Eastern Europe, ticks may transmit your dog Borreliosis (another rickettsial disease which produces arthritis and limping). About blood vessel parasites which are transmitted by snails (sometimes they are called “French heartworm”), the most important thing to know is the classical heartworm prevention consisting on tablets or injections is also valid for this parasite, and must be done all year round and anywhere the dog is, because there are no mosquitoes at the UK, but there certainly are lots of snails. -Do I have to keep using the same antiparasitic treatments and vaccinations wherever my dog is? We’ll only use antiparasitic treatments which are absolutely necessary everywhere: against fleas, heartworm and intestinal worms, but, depending on the place we live, some additional treatments such as ticks and mosquito repellents don’t have to be done (at the UK in winter, for example). About vaccinations, we must insist again: rabies blood test is necessary just for taking the dog/cat/ferret back to the UK, not for coming

66

into Spain. Even if you are not intending to take the dog back to Spain never again, rabies blood test must be kept valid by doing annual rabies vaccination if you are going to cross the British border, because, no matter the country where the dog is coming from, a valid, non expired and updated rabies blood test will be required for importing a dog/cat/ferret into the UK. -Is dry food bad for cats? A priori, it isn’t. The choice between dry and wet food depends on the individual preferences, the price, the availability, and of course if it’s well accepted by the cat’s digestive system or not. We normally recommend dry food because it’s easier to store (doesn’t smell, doesn’t attract flies), and it makes easier controlling the daily quantity the animal has. But the problem is: many cats don’t like drinking water (just think they come from the dessert!), they don’t drink unless they feel extremely thirsty, and some other ones don’t like the water if it’s been a long time in the bowl, so they prefer to drink drops from the faucet or from the hydrant, in all these cases, the quantity of water they drink is not enough for keeping the urinary system healthy, so, the urine will be too concentrated, so they will start having urinary problems: crystals, urine infections. For those cats which don’t drink enough water and tend to have urinary problems, we recommend wet food, but always taking into account wet food will keep mouth, gums and teeth not as clean as dry food would do. Anyway, if you use premium quality food, differences between dry and wet food are not so important. -Is it good to use a sunscreen in summer? Normally they are not necessary. Besides, they are created according to human skin specifications, not animal ones (they are normally much more hairy than human one). The best option is avoiding direct sunlight from 11-12:00 to 17-18:00h, and, if possible, keeping the animal indoors in a cool place

(watch out for aircon and kennel cough!). In some white and shorthaired animals (white European cats, Bull Terriers, etc) some extra attentions may be required, because they may develop aggressive skin cancers or serious skin irritations. These animals should never have direct exposure to sunlight: A similar case would be animals which are on certain antibiotics: some of them may have photosensitization as a side effect. -Can my dog swim in the sea? First of all we must remind that in most beaches dogs are forbidden so you may be fined by Police. If dogs are allowed and our dog likes it, normally there is no problem, but we mustn’t forget removing antiparasitic collars first (when put into sea water, they loose efficiency and the insecticide contaminates the water), and removing the sand from the dog when we are back home, for avoiding skin irritation. Of course, if the dog has a skin problem, it

mustn’t go to the beach, for its health and for other dogs and people health. Finally, we would like to remind you, due to the high number of cases we had last summer: -Keep kennel cough vaccination valid, even if the dog is not going into kennels. -Test dog’s blood for Erhrlichiosis if the dog is been bitten by ticks. Sometimes the incubation period is so long that we have forgotten the dog had ticks when we see the first symptoms (fever!). WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT?

introduced to the UK from Holland in 1889 and has spread across most of England and Wales, just reaching into southern Scotland but no further north.

by Mark Etheridge

I was rather taken aback the other day at the GA Centre when I spied a man driving a pony and trap towards the Puerto Marino complex. It was a wonderful sight to see, but it looked oddly out of place in the urban environment. The following morning, I met an affable Dutch chap in the hide at the Charco de Contacto pool (this hide can be a very cosmopolitan place at times), who didn't know a great deal about the birds on show but was willing to learn. He told me with amazement that he was sure he'd seen an owl sitting out in the full sunshine that very morning. I was able to reassure him that no, he wasn't hallucinating, and yes, he'd seen one of the resident Little Owls in the Clot. They are a common bird throughout Spain, and their habit of perching out in the open during daylight hours makes them quite easy to see. In the Clot, if you go westwards from the new Zeiss hide, past the locked gate (bah!) on the left and stop at the first tall tree on the right, there is often a Little Owl to be seen there, either in the big tree or glaring balefully at you from one of the dead stumps nearby; in fact the bird in my photo is this particular individual.

Little Owls hunt mainly at dawn and dusk. Their prey includes beetles, caterpillars, moths, spiders, slugs and small rodents, all in plentiful supply in the Clot. Being a fierce, daring bird, equipped with powerful talons, it will tackle mammals and birds of its own size. The little owl used to be thought responsible for the destruction of eggs and young game birds, but analysis of the contents of their pellets proved that this was untrue. Nowadays it is regarded as a useful pest destroyer in gardens and on farmland. It was

As its Latin name Athene Noctua implies, this owl was associated with the Greek goddess Athene. She was originally a goddess of war but was also worshipped as the goddess of intelligence. Athene took the owl as her emblem, and its image was stamped on several silver coins. Although the Greeks had a great respect for the Little Owl, the Romans later regarded it as a bird of ill-omen! The Spanish name for this bird is Mochuelo Europeo, and there is a Spanish idiom "Tocar el Mochuelo" meaning to get the worst part of something. I don't see how that follows, sitting out in the sunshine, getting all you need and afraid of nothing, the Little Owl has a very nice existence here in Spain. See you next month

Would you consider the following for the GA Advertiser. We believe that it is in the interests of residents and visitors alike.

“We have been robbed twice in the last year whilst visiting the Gran Alacant market in Avda Canarias - once from a zipped pocket and once from a zipped bag held across the chest! The skill of the scum who perpetrate these thefts is inbelievable. We will not be visiting the Gran Alacant market again. We have been to many markets in the area, some much busier, but never had a moments trouble before. There must be a serious problem with the GA market. We urge visitors to the GA market to be extra vigilent. Watch out particuarly for diversionary methods - this might be as seemingly insignificant as someone lightly jostling you. Donʼt carry wallets or purses - just keep a few euro in your pocket. You wonʼt know that you have been robbed till you go back to look for the puse or wallet which you thought was secure. Oh, and by the way, there were two large policemen in the market at the time. Chris & Penny. Barry

Do you know the petanque courts in the Avda de Noruega (opposite the part built GA prison, casino or supermarket - whatever it is going to be). The courts are very underused and it would be nice to see more activity there. The game is quite simple (though there is some skill involved) and cheap to get started. It is also quite sociable. If you would be interested in giving it a try, we will be starting regular, informal, sessions on Tuesdays from the 15th June at 7pm. Just turn up. Chris & Penny

Hi Sandra and Barry

Thanks for your outstanding magazine!!! Every time I come back from Sweden I get hold of a magazine as soon as I can to keep up with the latest news in Gran Alacant. In the May edition you wrote concerning trees in Monte y Mar: "This area is not under the jurisdiction of the Town Hall". What is the reason for this? Are there any explanations?? Will it be changed???? People here say that this is also the reason for us not having a proper streetnames yet. It is very difficult to order a taxi because they do not know where to go. Mail is also often put in wrong boxes because of the difficulties to separate addresses. They are all so much alike. All Monte Y Mar has one street name: Calle Canarias. On maps we got when we moved in you will find different names on the streets. It would be nice to get an explanation. We have soon lived here for 3 years, and otherwise we love it here. Kindest regards Ann Malmquist
