We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news, including that from the Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005. Many press releases come into the magazine each month, this we thought worthy of a mention.....Two local police officers saved the life of a man from a fire after a gas cylinder exploded in his Villa. The Mayor Miguel Zaragozza, accompanied by the Police Inspector of the Local Police, met Paschal Linares and Jesus Lahoz to congratulate them both “all of the santapoleros felt pride by the brave actions which they carried out

gambling with their own lives, demonstrating that they are true professionals of vocation” said Mayor Miguel Zaragozzaand and announced that the Headquarters of the Police are writing up a file “to ask for the Valencian C a t a l a n Autonomous Government to recognize its v a l u e distinguishing them with a special mention for their heroic act”. The Medieval Market gave colour to the historical centre of Santa Pola during the Easter period. Maria Asuncio'n Ruiz and Daniel Cheek, councilmen of Celebrations and Youth, respectively, arranged the event. There were too many stalls for the parade ground of the Castle so a lot more were round the outer perimeter walls. The people of Santa Pola and the visitors who

4

during the Easter holidays enjoyed their vacations in the town had an interesting alternative of leisure with this market, A very large crowd of people browsed through an ample variety of products from crafts in diverse elements, painting, textile, complements, plants, toys, food stalls and refreshment tents to watching the street entertainers, even donkey rides were on offer.

As you may know, from previous months, we have had so many calls and emails to us about the amount of dog mess, all over Gran Alacant. Are you concerned enough to try to do something about it? We would like to build up a list of names to send to the Town Hall in an attempt to get a dog warden employed. The high fines he could issue would pay his wages. Please email us at the magazine and we will compile a list of names, or sign the petition at Dick Turpins Bar, in the Sierra Mar complex. We would like as many names as possible to give us a bit of backing when we put the list forward at the Town Hall.

Our Mayor with Loreto and others from the Town Hall were inspecting the work going on beside Avenida Noregua, as we happened to be passing in our car, so we stopped and asked if we could take a photo. There has been a major problem here where rainwater was flooding the area and not able to get away under the road and down to El Clot. The old pipe work was all broken, and this is now being replaced and renewed, so that the water will run away. Whilst this work is being carried out, the opportunity has arisen to tidy up the area. A walkway is to be built, with perhaps, a small bridge to cross the

5

supplied to take advantage of this, so this is now in hand.

run of water and some seating and trees. Whilst taking the picture the Mayor asked for a photograph with us, so have included this, so as not to offend!!!!!!!

The Town Hall like us, were dismayed to see cars parked all over the new landscaping at the picnic area down by the beach road. Apparently someone had broken the padlock to allow cars through, the Town Hall have now relocked the gate with new padlocks. Hopefully it will not happen in the future.

We were asked about the possibility of having trees planted up the hill in the Monte y Mar area to break up the sight of concrete. This area is not under the jurisdiction of the Town Hall, so it is something that must be brought up with their Community President. The landscaping of the roundabout

The work at the sports centre is gathering pace. Having learned from sport facilities located in many different areas in Santa Pola, effort has been made on GA to keep everything in the same place. The above pic shows the Mayor, Loreto and people concerned with the project surveying the work being carried out.

at the bottom of the Maxcoop hill is imminent, as all tenders have now been presented and once a company has been chosen, the work will begin.

The Police office is being relocated from the municiple centre to a new area to be decided on Gran Alacant.

The colourful weeds and flowers sprouting up from the petanca and playground area on Av Noreuga will not to be cut down and tidied until all the colour has died off.

POST OFFICE

BEACH

We mentioned in an earlier issue the re generation of the area of Av Mediterraneo from the Post Office roundabout down towards the beach. Benches, trees, wider

pavements and more, are to be provided in this revamped area. When we have more space in a future issue, we will try to bring you a bigger map with more of an explanation. The money all comes from a Valencian Government subsidy. The train may have appeared by the time that you read this. All concerns that it may not happen, are unfounded.

A large project is now taking place in the big area of villas around the Monte Mar swimming pool, the updating of all electrics and sewerage when completed, will allow some of the roadways to be handed over to the community in this area. The big untidy, dog excrement infested area of land always being mentioned, on the left as you go down the beach road hill, has not been forgotten. It is still on the list of problems to be sorted.

Beach bars and sun beds etc on the Carabasi beach have not appeared to date (latish April). Elche Town Hall has control of this area. Speaking to one of the businesses that operates on the beach, June 1st is usually the start date. Some years they have started earlier, but in the present climate there does not appear to be sufficient demand for an earlier start date. Work is now complete on the

dangerous bend on Av Mediterraneo from the post office to the Consum roundabout. This may stop the increasing number of cars ending up in the undergrowth on this bend.

We brought the subject up once before, that many recently planted trees had died. Loreto was dismayed as seemingly many more trees had lost their leaves and were dying. But the company that supplied them has explained that at this time of the year, this variety of tree sheds its leaves, and will then provide new leaves in the summertime. When it is seen, which of the trees have died and will not recover the dead trees will be replaced by the company. This is the reason, so do not despair, most of the trees are not dead, all is in hand, at no cost to us or the Town Hall.

Towards the end of May there will be a book launch on Gran Alacant at Absolutely Fabulous whose advert is in the magazine, with its location, where copies will be available.

The author is Terry of Terryoke fame and the book is about the area of Gran Alacant, which we at the magazine have helped to design and produce and will be printed at Bailen, the printer in Santa Pola. In all ways a local production.

the streets and is currently being fed by a volunteer. He is very sociable and in need of a home.

So, she decides to show her husband that blondes really are smart. While her husband is off at work, she decides that she is going to paint a couple of rooms in the house. The next day, right after her husband leaves for work, she gets down to the task at hand. Her husband arrives home at 5:30 and smells the distinctive smell of paint. He walks into the living room and finds his wife lying on the floor

in a pool of sweat. He notices that she is wearing a heavy parka and a leather jacket at the same time. He goes over and asks her if she if OK. She replies yes. He asks what she is doing and she replies that she wanted to prove to him that not all blonde women are dumb, and she wanted to do it by painting the house. He then asks her why she has a parka over her leather jacket. She replied that she was reading the directions on the paint can and it said.... "FOR BEST RESULTS, PUT ON TWO COATS."

Trip to Granada One of our readers took a trip out and would like to share it with all of us.

36

Whilst Gran Alacant and the surrounding area is lovely and there are plenty of places to explore it is sometimes nice to go further afield to explore other parts of Spain that are equally rich in history and culture. For this reason we decided to take a trip to Granada. We had visited before many years ago when we visited the Alhambra Palace but on that occasion had not been able to explore the town itself which we had seen so tantalizingly from the ramparts of the Palace. The journey from Gran Alacant to Granada took about four hours of comfortable driving mostly on motorways that in places were empty of traffic. We drove via Lorca and then through the mountains passing the Troglodyte region of cave houses close to Guadix before descending into the city of Granada. The scenery was spectacular and in places snow could be seen on the mountain tops. There are very few petrol stations or places to eat so making sure that one has water in the car and a full tank on leaving is essential. There are numerous hotels of all types and standards in Granada but we decided to book into the Etap which we found to be ideally situated close to the ring road – junction 30 - and a comfortable distance from the old town. The hotel was very reasonably priced, close to a Hotel Ibis where there was an arrangement that guests at the Etap could get a deal on meals. Next door was a petrol station and across the road a Carrefour complex and the bus stop to catch the bus into town. On our first full day in Granada we woke early and after an adequate breakfast walked the few yards to the bus stop. The end of the line for that particular bus – number 155 - was at the Palacio de Congresos - a short walk from the old town. Walking through this part of the old town is much like walking through any established Spanish town with high buildings, some ornately decorated and very close together. It is in the vicinity of the cathedral that one finds the real gems of Granadaʼs history as one is plunged into the narrow streets and alleyways where one can see the Moorish influence in style and architecture. Whilst very touristy the area is reminiscent of the Souks of Morocco and Tangiers. The cathedral, which is surrounded on three sides by the narrow streets of the old town and with no open vistas to fully appreciate its external dimensions is

very grand with some wonderful paintings and statues. Surprisingly light and airy it is a tribute to the skill of the artisans who constructed it and the brilliant minds that designed it. The front of the cathedral opens onto the Gran Via de Colon a wide boulevard of modern shops and hotels where one has to run the gauntlet of the various beggars and gypsies who tend to congregate in these areas. Turning right one soon comes to the Calle Reyes Catolicos where, if one turns left one soon comes to a tourist information office where a good map of the town and a list of the sites open to the public which gives details of opening hours and cost of entry can be obtained. This particular tourist information office is next to the Church of Santa Ana where the other side of the church opens onto Carrera del Darro – a narrow road with old, high buildings on one side and what looks like a moat surrounding the Alhambra but is in reality the Rio Darro on the other. The towering buildings of the the Alhambra can be seen through the trees. The road is home to a whole host of interesting buildings including El Banuelo, banos arabes – an Arab bath house. Entry is free and it is well worth a visit. Continuing along the Carrera del Darro the narrow road widens into the Paseo de los Tristes where there are a number of restaurants and bars. For anyone who has visited Italy the area is redolent of some of Italyʼs piazzas. Like all Spanish cities everything stops and closes for the afternoon siesta and after walking for several hours, a good time to have lunch or return to the hotel. The walk back from the city to the hotel took us about 35 minutes. Walking around Granada is really the only way to see it. Many of the roads are impassable to cars and one would miss so much if one tried to drive through it. One would miss the Cuesta de Gomerez – a road leading to a former entrance to the Alhambra where there are artisans making guitars and where bicycles sit precariously on balconies several storeys above the road – one is left to wonder how the owners get them up there. Like so many Spanish cities Granada is a blend of ancient and modern but the Alhambra towering above it makes it unique and a fascinating place to spend a few days just a few hours drive from Gran Alacant. Genuine emails to our magazine

Hi Barry & Sandra As always you are both doing a wonderful job at the GA Advertiser What a full introduction this month! I love to read what is happening in GA, as unfortunately we do not live there permanently yet, and eagerly await the publication each month! I am however going to ask you once again to mention the waste land at Monte y Mar 3.2 F2 where the dumping and dog fouling is going on I take it there has been no improvement as I have not read anything about it in the advertiser You did bring this issue up before for me and Masa were to look at fencing this area off Could you please “hound” them again, through the Council maybe, and see if we can get them to do it Happy Easter and keep up the great work! Kind Regards Fiona

Hi Barry Sorry to bother you again but as I am not living in GA you are my point of contact for asking questions of our local councilor at the monthly meetings I put up a new thread under the Monte y Mar forum asking if there was ever any progress on getting some trees planted in Monte y Mar along the footpaths so as to make it less like a concrete jungle I know it was brought up at the AGM last year but I think it has since gone by the way side Could you please also raise this as an issue at your next meeting and ask that something be done to the area As “Colin of Crewe” says in his reply We Want some Trees to break up the Concrete Jungle Agree with you more or at least some trees/plants along the streets in Mont y Mar would add to the area and reduce the noise that bounces around the buildings. Trouble is Mont y Mar is such a big area that several communities would have to be involved and also the Local Councillor for the area should take up the case and get Santa Pola to allocate some money for this along with all the good work they are doing on roundabouts and parks. Barry (GA Advertiser) is there a story you could run to encourage Santa Pola Council to consider this? Kind Regards Fiona Dear Barry and Sandra, may I please take advantage of your brilliant magazine to say a big thank-you to Harry and Heather at Chasers Bar. I held a birthday party there on 3rd April, the atmosphere was great and they really work hard making sure everyone has a good time. Brett and Lee from Not Just Desserts catered for me with thier lovely home made food and of course there was Michael and Tim in charge of the music. (thank you Tim for 'The man from La Mancha') in all a great evening with all my friends. It is a lovely friendly bar, run by two special people. Thank you, Brenda Roper.

Hi everyone, this month and next I am going to talk about Massage.

Swedish Massage this is the type of Massage that I am qualified to do. Mmmmmm, pure, heavenly and simply divine, just the thought of a massage makes you feel relaxed. So what is Massage? Massage is the use of hands, feet or mechanical means to manipulate the soft tissue of the body, in particular the muscles. Massage is used for relaxation, rehabilitation and stimulation of the whole body. It enhances suppleness of the muscles, improves circulation and reduces stress. So where does it come from? Massage is not a technique derived from one culture but from many. People the world over use touch as a form of communication and comfort. Animals use touch in a similar way, e.g. grooming their young, licking wounds and nuzzling each other to show affection. The use of massage has been recorded in China from 3000BC. In India massage has alwaysʼ been used as part traditional Ayurvedic Medicine. At Roman baths, business life for all members of society, massage was central to the whole ritual. For the ancient Greeks massage formed part of everyday exercise and fitness. Modern massage is based on techniques used by Per Henrik Ling (1776-1839) a physiologist and fencing master, he was from Sweden and massage is still referred to as Swedish Massage because of his influence. At the end of the nineteenth century massage was battling for respectability. The name was often used in relation to prostitution and therefore the therapy was not taken seriously. In order to combat this eight woman founded The Society of Trained Masseuses in 1884. Massage now has become a reputable and recognized therapy thanks to an increased awareness and interest in complementary therapies.

Massage is beneficial to all of the bodies systems. It is a natural and effective way to treat psychological problems (relating to the mind) such as stress, by enabling the body to relax, thereby reducing tension it relaxes the mind, thereby reducing anxiety and its effects and gives a “lift” to our emotions and increases positive feelings, enhancing self esteem. Massage will increase you energy by invigorating all body systems and reducing fatigue. Massage is also effective in treating the Physiological (relating to the physical structure of the body) by improving skin tone and colour by removing dead skin cells and improving circulation. This is an excellent natural way of keeping the muscles in our face strong and young looking facials are an important part of keeping that youthfulness for both men and woman. It encourages deeper and therefore more efficient breathing, it encourages better lymph drainage and reduces swelling, it relives muscle fatigue, soreness and stiffness, encourages sleep, boosts. In the long term mass will lower high blood pressure, balance the digestive system, relieve insomnia, improve skin elasticity and circulation and boost immunity. Next month I will discuss Thermo Auricular Therapy...............................See you then ............Dott

Santa Pola Club de Futbol By Kevin Rendall

‘Owz that? - not out! Over the previous three months or so Santa Pola CF have acquired the persona of an obdurate opening batsman, determined at all costs not to surrender his wicket. For the football team though it isn’t their wicket they stubbornly refuse to give up, it’s an impressive unbeaten run, which now stretches to ten games, during which time fifteen goals have been scored and just Vital contributions seven conceded. all season long Along the way, from Chema they have taken on and played off the park some decent sides, including the top two in the division, Mutxamel and Benisa, both of whom were very fortunate to escape with a point. Not for Santa Pola eleven men behind the ball either, the sequence has been achieved in some style, at times shell shocked opponents have been left chasing shadows as the Rojiblancos strutted their stuff with sumptuous one touch, free flowing football. Even the enforced absence of key personnel through suspension and injury hasn’t hampered the progress, high quality replacements slotted into the team and performed so well that coach Domingo Grau faced a bit of a selection dilemma.

60

April sees the best performances of the season In the last weekend of March, Santa Pola welcomed second placed Mutxamel to the Manolo Macia and, despite conceding first, proceeded to give their high flying visitors a footballing master class. The away side scored first from the penalty spot inside ten minutes, this was like pulling the tail of a dangerous dog, as Santa Pola responded in awesome style, equalizing very quickly and for the remainder of the game battering Mutxamel senseless. With five minutes remaining, an awful clash of heads saw ‘Pola midfielder Carlos Fernandez stretchered off with severe concussion, thereafter Santa Pola looked somewhat deflated and the game ended one apiece in low key fashion. The Semana Santa weekend at the start of the month limited Santa Pola to just three games during April and the squad made excellent use of the weekend off to come back firing on all cylinders. Orihuela B were the visitors in ‘Pola’s second consecutive home match, for which the meagre looking Defensive rock crowd was Miguel served up a treat. A rampant Santa Pola hammered their hapless guests by five goals to one to record their best win of the season. Even better was to come a week later. It is highly likely Benisa, between Calpe and Javea in the North of the region, will be crowned Preferente champions in a few weeks, if so they’ll be hoping to move up to the Tercera division and see the back of Santa Pola, to whom they lost 4-3 back in November. Benisa are an outstanding football team, the best Santa Pola have played all year and will be worthy title

winners. On Sunday April 18th the two of them met again at the neat La Costa ground in Benisa and put on an absolute cracker of a football match. Somehow it finished 0-0, but in a breathless ninety minutes the game had everything, top quality and stylish football from both sides, decent refereeing and a last minute penalty save from Santa Pola goalkeeper Julio. Santa Pola have not played better all season. Captain Monsa - run-in? leading by example On paper

And the

Santa Pola appear to have a relatively benign end to

the 2009/10 campaign with two games on the road and a couple more at home, all except one of which is against teams below them in the classification. The Marineros head for Alfaz del Pi first of all in May before their second last home fixture against Alguena. The elephant in Santa Pola’s room is a difficult away trip, on the third Sunday of the month, to Horadada, a team that has been in the top three all season long. Finally, nine months after it all started, Santa Pola end their season at home by hosting Jove Espanol. If you’ve not been before, come along to one of the final home games and watch Santa Pola push hard for the play offs. current climate and with the need to raise more revenue this will no longer be the case. OK, it’s that time of year again when preparation for the filing of Annual Tax Returns starts. It is an accepted part of life for those working in Spain. However, for those who “just live” in Spain there is the belief that there is no need to file a return in Spain because taxes are paid in the UK: This illusion has been held by many for years. But it won´t be for much longer. The Hacienda now has access to the Catastral and already letters have been received asking why a property owner is not registered for Tax, whether it be as a resident or a non resident. Where previously no one really bothered about who was paying tax and where, in the

62

Indeed many who have bought a resale property have never received any advice on their Tax situation and are oblivious of the requirements. Unfortunately, ignorance is no excuse. You have been warned! To set the record straight. If you are a non resident (are not in Spain for more than 183 days) then you need a fiscal representative. Further you should file a non residents tax declaration. If you live in Spain for more than 183 days of the year then you are a resident of Spain and should file an annual tax declaration. You will not be required to pay tax twice, as there is a double taxation treaty between

Spain and the UK. For those on a Civil Service pension there is no option but to pay the tax in the UK. Declarations for the year 2010 are now being prepared. The time to file a residents Tax Return is May-June but you need to get your paperwork in order now. The final document required will be a P60 usually received in April.

It can also assist when calculating Inheritance Tax. For more information or to make an appointment please telephone 96 681 4506 or email us at HYPERLINK "mailto:granalicant@costablancalawyers.com" granalicant@costablancalawyers.com and don´t forget THE FIRST CONSULTATION IS FREE

As with all tax related matters personal circumstances vary so it is vital to get advice. To assist expats we are holding weekly surgeries throughout April, which are free of charge. All you have to do is phone and make an appointment. Finally there are benefits to filing a residents Tax Return in Spain, where allowances are given against mortgages, children etc. As with the UK there are personal allowances. There is also the option for a married couple to file a joint return, which can be of benefit.

This was a very enjoyable match, when our entire club came together and as you would expect this type of inter club game always bring out keen friendly rivalry. We had a great afternoon’s bowling, and although the Matadors won, there were four reasonably close games and the results could have gone either way. The biggest cheer of the night was reserved for the winner of the last trophy awarded, the President’s Cup, which was won this year by our club’s most senior member Jim Ure. Jim proved that when it comes to bowls, age is no bar to taking on and beating the ‘young pups’. One of the photographs shows Jim, together with runner-up Bill Tuckfield, Honorary President Antonio Martinez, and Councillor for Gran Alacant, our good friend Loretto Cascales. RACIAL PREDISPOSITIONS One of the most surprising things for Veterinary students is the attention which the breed is paid as a pre-dispositional factor for lots of diseases in subjects such as Internal Medicine and Surgical Pathology. As we get more and more experience in our daily work, we realize how important is to know these predispositions. “Racial predisposition” means that those animal belonging to some breeds, have more possibilities of suffering some specific diseases than others. The most common example would be hip dysplasia in German Sheperds. Those predispositions appear, maybe for anatomical reasons (in German Sheperds, their peculiar shape of back, hip and back legs makes them more prone to suffer this problem), or maybe for genetic reasons: a group of animals belonging to the same breed will share lots of gens which determinate the size, coat, etc, and, of course, for the same reason they will also share gens that are related to the possibility of suffering some diseases. This is so important that, talking about German Sheperds again, some breeders offer dysplasia-free lines, that is, families which haven’t had a case of dysplasia for generations. Another good example of this would be Labradors which are used in Spain for guiding blind people: they must come from dysplasia-free and atopy-free (atopy= allergic reaction of the skin against some antigens. Labradors are prone to it) families. If one of those dogs is diagnosed of atopy, his parents are never again used for reproduction. For all these reasons, we highly recommend everyone who wants a new dog or cat to ask the Vet first to make sure if the breed we are going to choose is specially fragile. When we say racial predisposition, we mean more specific things than, for example, the fact that dogs with long hanging ears are more prone to ear infections, or some genetic problems that are not related to one specific breed, such as ectopic testicles, which may be transmitted by both males and females. Of course, in all these cases we are

66

talking of odds, not facts, so if when we buy an animal we request some info about its family, we’ll reduce the possibilities of having problems in a future, or maybe we’ll be aware to prevent the appearing of the problem (for example, in case of a dog with diabetic relatives, taking great care of its diet). Here are some examples of racial predispositions: -German Sheperd: hip dysplasia. The symptoms usually start in animals younger than one year, and it’s diagnosed by X-ray. In some cases an expensive surgical treatment can be used, but we can minimize the risk by using a special large breed puppy diet and moderate exercise, avoiding vertical jumps and stairs. Sometimes, despite this is a congenital problem, the symptoms may not start being visible till the dog is old. -Persian cat: polycystic kidney. This problem is much more common (but not exclusive) in this breed. It’s a congenital problem, and it consists on the appearing of one or more cysts, in one or the two kidneys, producing a deficient renal function. When only one of the kidneys is affected, the other one will compensate the deficit of the ill one, and the animal may have no symptoms. The diagnosis is made by ultrasonography. -Boxer: tumors, mainly dermal ones, and also epulis (a benign overgrowth of the gum). In case of a Boxer, it’s a good idea to biopsy every lump, even if it looks benign. Just like German Sheperds, they are also prone to hip dyspasia. -Westie: they are extremely prone to immunological problems, such as atopy and dry eye. For this reason it’s very important in this breed a proper control of fleas and other parasites, and we must be very careful with the quality of the diet we provide (cheap foods are more prone to produce allergic reactions in sensitive animals than premium quality ones). In case of an ocular problem, a tear test must always be done. Labrador: they also tend to have immunological problems, and due to their big size, hip dysplasia, and joint problems (watch out for overweight!). They are also prone to

lumps, but a bit less than Boxers. -Golden Retriever: skin and thyroid problems (hypothyrodism). -Cavalier King Charles Spaniel: Ear infections, due to their long ears, but the most important in this breed is how easy they suffer from heart problems, such as enlarged heart. -Pug: due to their peculiar anatomy, they have skin problems at the face very often (because the skin is very piled at the face), and they are extremely sensitive to certain skin mites. In most cases, the mites are living on the skin when we buy the animal, but no symptoms can be seen. And then, when there is a small problem with the immunity (caused for example by stress, season, a surgical proceeding), the mites start reproducing and the problem appears. In these cases, apart from treating the mites, neutering is recommended, for two reasons: the animal will transmit the sensitivity to their puppies, and, in case of a female, every time she is in season, the problem will be back.

We must repeat once again that in every case we are just talking about odds and trends. The final result will always depend on genetics (the trend) and environment (diet, cares, vaccines, exercise, etc). Racial predisposition is something more than the fact that large dogs suffer from joint problems, and small ones from dental calculi. What happens with crossed animals, then? Those ones that look just like crossed animals because they are not similar to any breed, are normally very strong and healthy, due to “hybrid vigor” and the fact that inbreeding in this individuals is nil, but, of course, if they are large, they will be prone to hip dysplasia, if the ears are long they will be prone to ear infections, and if we are talking of a long haired cat, it will suffer from furballs even if it’s not a Persian. WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge

One way to impress your birding friends is to casually lob the name Howard Medhurst into a conversation. In return, you will get either a blank stare, or an appreciative nod of the head to indicate that you are a well-educated person, know your 1950’s birders and probably deserve drinks on the house for the rest of the night. Our Howard was an extremely nervous chap who suffered from the cold. Unbelievably, he would ride out on the pillion of his mate’s highpowered motorbike in pursuit of birds around Britain, and the consequent chill of both fear and the cold would reduce him to a twitching wreck – an antic which was copied by his birding chums, who started calling themselves “Twitchers”, a term which has now been recognised by the Oxford English Dictionary as a word for mad-keen birdwatchers. If you have a Twitcher visiting you here in Spain (or if you are one yourself), there is one particular bird almost on your doorstep which most British Twitchers would give their left arm and a goodly number of eye teeth to see – the Rufous Bush Robin or Bush Chat. It has only been recorded 4 times in Britain since 1950, and is therefore known in twitcherspeak as a “Mega”, which is another way of saying that if you think you’ve seen one in Britain you are probably wrong.

68

It is a distant cousin of the more common European Robin which can be found in some numbers in the Clot during the

winter months, but the Rufous Bush Robin is only a summer visitor, and a scarce one at that. Two or three pairs inhabit the pine trees to the North and West of the reserve, and they can also be found along the coast road to Santa Pola. If they are not singing up in the pine tree branches, they have the unusual habit of running around on the ground like demented pixies. The one in my picture is a male who was so busy trying to impress the local talent with his buzzing display routine that he totally failed to notice me for a full 20 minutes! In the summer of 2009, these birds managed to halt the construction of the new high speed AVE line at Elche. No, they didn’t hold up placards to stop the bulldozers, but a Spanish national group concerned with bird conservation obtained an agreement with the contractors to stop work clearing an area of pines while these birds were breeding in the vicinity. The sad thing about this is that this year the Elche birds will have to look elsewhere for nesting sites. The Spanish name for this bird is Alzacola común, but common it ain’t. See you next month.

The Co-ordinators Jan and Angela would like to thank al the walkers who took part in the Walk for Life alongside the El Clot this Sunday morning 25th April. We had a very enjoyable morning and the weather was so kind to us, a little overcast but warm enough, just ideal. It was great to see so many supporters and the decorated Bras. Dot won the prize for best dresser she looked fantastic all in pink, even her eyelashes, and her dog Sam had a Bra on as did the other dogs. Over half the people did a second circuit, and everyone received a Certificate for taking part. We have 888 euros up to now in Sponsorship for which we cannot thank you enough, a special mention to Liesel of Bluemoon Solutions who raised 227.50 euros. This will remain locally for MABS and will be paid into our local account here. This enables us to help people suffering with cancer if they need respite care, a driver, escort and translator, and any equipment needed. We cannot thank Loreto enough for being with us all morning and arranging for the Police to assist us and check we were ok on the roads. The Police did a wonderful job for us. She also made avaiable to us a stage and tables but next year she wants to work more closely with us to make it a bigger event, to involve more people and associations and to have music and loudspeakers, so be sure to watch out for us. Thank you Jan.
