Hello Everyone, Welcome to our August edition, Our front cover shows what a big month it has been for Spain. We choose to watch the football in a Spanish bar, with a Spanish TV, a Spanish commentary, among the Spanish, what a night! Then Nadal won the Mens Final at Wimbledon, so what a very good month for Spanish sportsmen. The train now going round Gran Alacant seems very popular, making it easier for people to reach other parts of G.A. (that unless you are very fit, and can walk, or have a car) you just cannot get to. Plaza Mayor had a very successful 2 days (19th-20th July) with stalls and entertainment throughout the day and evening, congratulations to all concerned for making it a very enjoyable weekend. You can see a picture of the winner of our competition for a 3 litre bottle of wine on page 18 collecting her prize. Well done to Mrs Lena Tvede. The day before going to press, we at the magazine were hit with an email scam. This has made it impossible to view our email account, so if we have ignored any late changes to adverts, we apologise. This from now on is our new email address:granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.co.uk Have a good month

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news from the Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005.

After an agreement between the Town Hall and MASA the builder, MASA are constructing three roundabouts on Gran Alacant. The one at the bottom of the Maxcoop hill is now being surfaced and is near to completion. The one at the end of Av. del Carabasi road is now being landscaped and one further one is

pavements by the Gran Alacant apartments, this is being paid for by the Town Hall. Residents who asked for the petanque rinks at the sports centre are making full use of these new facilities. So much so, that they are getting together to hopefully form their own association. The Town Hall are very pleased with the response from the residents after providing this facility. Players have asked that the area be fenced off, which the Town Hall have agreed to. You can reserve these facilities by booking at the Sports Centre. The train eventually arrived this month and already it looks to be doing very well. Now’s your chance to get around Gran Alacant.

about to begin construction along Av del Noruega between the GA Centre and the new school. MASA are also paying to complete the pavement between the GA Centre and the new school. Another improvement that has been asked for by the GA residents is underway. Residents have asked for a turn around area and wider

The Santa Pola/Gran Alacant budget has been agreed and we hope to have more news next month. There is a surplus from last year, which added to the new monies should enable new proposals. The new park on GA will go ahead (as to where: more news

next month). Money is to be spent on landscaping the area along the Gran Alacant edge of El Clot.

be sorted. The companies concerned can be written to asking them not to leave their leaflets, also if you ask the council they will write to companies on your behalf. Councillor Javier Baile is already implementing rules and fines for owners who´s dogs are caught or reported, fouling the public areas of our urbanisation. For a first offence fines of 100-750 euro, a second offence within the next six months will be fined between 750-1500 euro and a third time will be fined between 1500-3000 euro. There is a new Church service starting in August. See their advert in this months issue.

Starting at the Arenales end, the whole area will eventually be fenced and lined with small trees, leaving access to the area within. In this area there will be walkways and seating, making a nice spot for young and old to enjoy the area. We know it is a while yet from the Christmas activities, but a group are organising a choir/carols evening for us this coming year. At the moment it is hoped it will take place at Plaza Mayor. If this location is unavailable the Town Hall will provide a siting for it. We mentioned a couple of seemingly abandoned cars and tall weeds along Av Polonia. Loreto picked up the phone and spoke to the person in charge of that department, and hopefully another problem will eventually get solved.

Another issue we were asked to mention, was that of more and more aircraft flying over GA. It has been noted although the Council do not know if they can do anything about it. Santa Pola Life Resort are looking for consultation with the owners of the properties before announcing what areas of the resort will be made available to the general public. The new school on Gran Alacant is certainly looking good, with all of the landscaping, trees, & awnings. A topclass facility for our children. We will include pictures next month. Don’t forget the concerts on Gran Alacant and in Santa Pola, which are mentioned on the Tourist Information page.

Flyers and leaflets spread all around Gran Alacant and dog excriment have been a long term problem which is hopefully about to

Because he's cross-eyed? " "No, because he's really heavy"

Q: Where can men over the age of 50 find younger, sexy women who are interested in them? A: Try a bookstore …

A nice, calm and respectable lady went into the pharmacy, walked up to the pharmacist, looked straight into his eyes, and said, 'I would like to buy some cyanide.' The pharmacist asked, ........'Why in the world do you need cyanide?' The lady replied, ...................'I need it to poison my husband.' The pharmacist's eyes got big and he exclaimed, 'Lord have mercy! I can't give you cyanide to kill your husband. That's against the law! I'll lose my license! They'll throw both of us in jail! All kinds of bad things will happen. Absolutely not! You CANNOT have any cyanide!' The lady reached into her purse and pulled out a picture of her husband in bed with the pharmacist's wife. The pharmacist looked at the picture and replied, 'Well now, that's different. You didn't tell me you had a prescription!'

A Big thank you

to the local police & Gran Alacants community spirit

I am Sean's wife Rosemary.

Sean was the victim of a hit & run driver in the UK eight years ago. This left him with major brain injuries and he spent two years in hospital recovering. Unfortunately one of his many ongoing difficulties now is that he has episodes of confusion and wanderings. He requires supervision 24 hours per day but obviously sometimes things can go wrong. If he does wander he is disorientated and does not know who or where he is, obviously this situation can be very dangerous as he has no aility to understand what is happening to him.

On Monday 16th of June Sean went missing from our home on Av De Polonia. at around 9pm. I did all the usual checks and he was nowhere to be seen. I contacted the police in Santa Pola and they immediately arrived and began a search of the area. After a few hours it became clear that someone had seen Sean earlier wandering toward the Clot de Galvany.

Sean was carrying his mobile phone with him but we had been unable to contact him on it. It seems that he had fallen down a storm drain and probably knocked himself out for some time before continuing his disorientated jouney. As the hours passed a huge police search was mounted and a helicopter ordered to assist. Neighbours, both Spanish and British got out of their beds to join in the search, with Spanish neighbours translating between the Police and other searchers. After about five hours Sean was located in an area of the Clot which was impenetrable due to the density of the cane he had become stuck in. The cane was around 15feet high so there was no ability to make visual contact. The Police had brought in High powered lighting to try to see him. They were finally able to make contact but were unable to reach the area where he was stuck. A number of Policemen then set off into the dense cane and finally rescued him, he was brought out of the cane by 4 policemen and taken to a waiting ambulance which took him to hospital. Sean has now recovered from this ordeal and his wounds from the sharp cane are healing.

What was interesting to see was that the police forces both acted extremely quickly to the incident, a lot of very hard physical work was done to extract him from where he had become stuck. Most of all, the incredible way in which the community pulled together in a time of need was admirable. The Police, Ambulance and friends and neighbours of different nationalities worked enormously hard to rescue a vulnerable adult and showed that community spirit in Gran Alacant is alive and well. The emergency services showed that they are highly efficient and above all, very caring. Over the years we have had the occasional incident in the Uk where Sean has gone missing and the emergency services are good at locating him and making him safe, the local authority has a plan of action in place for such incidents. The Spanish authorities however were dealing with a completely unknown situation and were simply heroic in the circumstances. Our heartfelt thanks to all of our friends and neighbours who were so kind and helpful but also a huge thank you is due to the Police for their care and professionalism in unusual circumstances. Rosemary Timmons.

Fresh from my shower, I stand in front of the mirror complaining to my husband that my breasts are too small. Instead of characteristically telling me it's not so, he uncharacteristically comes up with a suggestion. 'If you want your breasts to grow, then every day take a piece of toilet paper and rub it between them for a few seconds.' Willing to try anything, I fetch a piece of toilet paper and stand in front of the mirror, rubbing it between my breasts. 'How long will this take?' I a sked. 'They will grow larger over a period of years,' my husband replies. I stopped. 'Do you r really think rubbing a piece of toilet paper between my breasts every day will make my breasts larger over the years?' Without missing a beat he says 'Worked for your bum, didn't it?' He's still alive, and with a great deal of therapy, he may even walk again, although he will probably continue to take his meals through a straw. Stupid, stupid man.

A Guide To Releasing Equity From Your Home (in conjunction with the advert opposite) There are several ways to do this and below are bullet points for each method. If this is something you are considering it is recommended that you consult with a qualified advisor to discuss your individual needs. Normal Mortgage – Most know what this is and how it works but to recap, you and your property are assessed by a lender on the security of their investment and they either lend or they don’t. Age, income, property are all big factors in this and of course you have to make payments every month reducing your monthly budget accordingly. Investment Backed Mortgage – Similar to a normal mortgage but instead of taking out a smaller percentage of the money tied up in the property, more is released and an investment is secured which should pay the mortgage and may even provide an additional income source on top. There are various schemes out there some promising the world but personally I would look at the safest options and if there is any extra money left over, great. Reversion Scheme – Personally I don’t like these. You basically sell your house to the lender and they accumulate all the future equity in the house, it is very limiting on what you as a tenant can and cannot do. Thankfully I am not aware of any reversion schemes currently available in Spain and they are suitable for only a very few. Lifetime Mortgage – A good lifetime mortgage provider will offer a “No Negative Equity Guarantee” meaning you can never owe more than your property is worth. Rates should be competitive and get out clauses minimal. These schemes usually are only available to the over 60’s and provide a lump of money to do with as you wish. They are a lot easier to set up as it is the property that is under assessment and not income etc. The interest is added to the loan and you don’t have to make monthly payments. A good scheme ensures that the house remains yours and you are free to sell it at any time should you decide to. In Spain there is no professional requirement for mortgage advisors to be qualified. Ensure that your advisor is qualified to discuss the options available as this is a big decision and you need the correct information and assistance. Simple Spanish Mortgages has all UK qualified advisors that are experienced and specialise in Finance both in Spain and the UK. Visit the main office in MASA square,

HOGUERAS It really seems unbelievable that all year is spent building these wonderful models, only to see them all go up in smoke. You can see the fireman in the picture, hosing down the buildings so that they do not catch light. These pictures were all in a photographic contest on one of Gran Alacants local forums at: www.granalacant.myfreeforum.org

We have as you can see, published the winning picture.

We would like to thank the forums owner, Robin Bonathan for the use of the photographs.

Welcome to the monthly computing column brought to you by Dave the Computerman (MCSE)

Dave The Computerman.

Users used to AVG 7 have been contacting me complaining that they do not know when, or how long AVG is taking to update. To see the download state, double-click on the AVG icon on the desktop and click on the Update now link on the left-hand edge. This will begin the download and you will be able to see the progress of the download.

Complaints about AVG 8

The Mobile PC link on the control panel is a single location where the computer´s settings can be adjusted. By reducing the brightness of the screen, volume level, and switching off the wireless connector when not required, you will lengthen the life of the battery whilst it is not connected to the mains. Once plugged into the mains, you can return the computer to its highest performance setting. The power saver setting maximises the battery life by lowering system performance. It is recommended that a user uses the battery to power a laptop for at lest 25% of its working time, thus if you use the laptop every day, run it on the battery for two days a week, and let the battery run down, thus the battery charging circuit will remain functional.

New settings for a Windows Vista based laptop

Mozilla have released a new version of the popular Firefox web browser, Firefox 3. In doing so they also achieved a record for consecutive downloads with almost 8 million people downloading the browser on it´s first day of release. Apart from a newer more modern look, it features a much improved rendering engine which opens pages much quicker. It still features the ability to have multiple pages open at once, in fact on my computer, it opens all four of my home pages as soon as it goes on the internet. Bookmarks (Favourites in Internet Explorer) are easier to add, simply click on the star icon in the location bar. There is no need to make folders to store your bookmarks, simply tag them to group them with other similar pages. Firefox is open source which means that you can add whatever you want to the programme and it has much better built-in security than Internet Explorer. It can be downloaded from Mozilla.com and works on all versions of Windows from 98SE onwards. Now is a great time to ditch Internet Explorer. If you are still running Internet Explorer 6, now is the time to change to Internet Explorer 7, which is available from Microsoft.com, or move to Mozilla. Internet Explorer 7 can only be downloaded if you have a legal copy of Windows, as Windows Genuine tool must be downloaded first. Internet Explorer 6 has a huge amount of security holes on it and the bad guys out there can easily enter your system via this browser. If you cannot use IE/, download Mozilla 3 and better secure your computer. To find out which version of Internet Explorer you are using, start Internet Explorer, click on help and then on about internet explorer and check which version you are running.

A Polish man moved to the USA and married an American girl. Although his English was far from perfect, they got along very well until one day he rushed into a lawyer's office and asked him if he could arrange a divorce for him. The lawyer said that getting a divorce could depend on the circumstances, And asked him the following questions: 'Have you any grounds'? 'Yes, an acre and half and nice little home'. 'No, I meant what is the foundation of this case'? It's made of concrete 'I don't think you understand. Does either of you Have a real grudge'? 'No, we have carport, and not need one'. I mean, what are your relations like? 'All my relations still in Poland'. 'Is there any infidelity in your marriage'? 'We have hi-fidelity stereo and good DVD player'. 'Does your wife beat you up'? 'No, I always up before her'. 'Why do you want this divorce'? 'She going to kill me'. 'What makes you think that'? 'I got proof'. 'What kind of proof'? 'She going to poison me. She buy a bottle at drugstore and put on shelf in bathroom. I can read, and it say: 'Polish Remover'

The

entertainment SCENE in and around

gran alacant Sunday 6th of July at Raffles Bar was the only night available for the the much sought after Jimmy Mac. However, plenty of regulars and music fans turned up to watch 'The Mac' entertain. His legendary ELVIS set got the night going, and the costumes just kept coming out.

With Reggae wigs, flashing light sunglasses and a spontaneous wit, Jimmy makes his work look more like fun. He is more than comfortable on stage and with a classic repotoire of rock and roll classics and medleys it is no wonder that his calendar is always full. Raffles Bar is fully sound proofed, which means the music can carry on till late without disturbing the local

urbanisation. It has an Art Deco look, with clean lines and a smart jazzbar feel. Dave and his wife Pam work hard to provide good entertainment, in a clean, trouble free and well air conditioned bar. Families and friends alike are always made welcome. Check out the add in this mag for forthcoming events. The name Raffles came from a holiday in Singapore where he and his wife stayed at the prestigious hotel of the same name. However you don't have to travel too far for a touch of class as Raffles Bar is situated on the top of Gran Alacant near Quicksave. THE VERDICT: Bar Prices: 2.40€ for a pint of Estrella Galicia. (My favourite). 1-10 Rating: 9. Return visit: Like Jimmy Mac, I'll be back.

SKIN & COAT CARE One of the most important things we notice when we see a dog or a cat for the first time is the coat. There are some breeds whose coat is spectacular, due to the unusual colour or length, and some others which are practically hairless, such as Sphinx cat or Mexican Xoloitlcuintzle dog, so, there is an incredible variability of colours, lengths and thickness of fur, and keeping it beautiful and healthy in every case, is a very important task of owner, groomer and Vet. Skin is the first barrier which protects us from external agents, so, skin and coat will look different in every case according to, first thing of all, the environment in which the breed appeared (for example, long and thick fur in Siberian or Eskimo dogs). The hair appears and grows at the most superficial coats of the skin, and every hair comes from a structure of the skin called follicle. There are different kinds of hair: -True hair, the long ones. -Undercoat. They are shorter, and provide protection against low temperatures. Dogs and cats skin has no sweat glands at all, so, the only way to eliminate an excess of body temperature in these animals is panting: the tongue works in this case as an engine radiator, so, itʼs very important not to muzzle a dog when temperatures are very high (just remember “heat stroke” from other articles!). The glands that exist in every dog and cat skin are the fat ones, and they produce the oil which protects the skin, and the balance of this oil is very important for keeping the coat in a right condition: sometimes, an excess of shampooing with aggressive shampoos may eliminate that protective oil and skin irritations and some other problems will appear. The speed the hair grows is similar in every breed: 7-9 mm a month. What is different in every case is the time the hair keeps growing: the follicle has got three different stages: a first one in which the hair grows (anagen), then a second one when the hair stops growing (catagen), and then a third one when the hair falls (telogen). In long

64

haired breeds the first stage lasts for several months, and due to this, the fur is longer. In shorthair breeds, that first stage lasts for only a few days, so, they look to be moulting all the time, but this is not a problem at all (except for our sofa or carpets…), but a normal condition of some breeds. There is nothing to do about it: if genetically speaking the maximum length of the hair of our dog is 5 cm, will never grow any longer even if we never clip it: when it reaches 5 cm length, it will fall down. In normal condition there are two peaks in dog moulting: in spring, when the undercoat practically disappears, and in autumn, when summer coat falls and winter coat and undercoat appear. In order to help this natural process we can brush the dog daily, and sometimes a bath (not too often!!) because warm water makes removing dead fur from their follicle easier. Providing vitamins and omega-3 fatty acids will make the new hair grow stronger and healthier, and the skin condition improve, but they will never make the natural moulting not to appear or finish earlier. Animals which live indoors (artificial illumination and temperature conditions) may have some alterations with the natural moulting process, which may be active all year round. This is more evident in cats. Some dog breeds never moult: Yorkshire Terrier, Lhassa Apso, Maltese and Poodle, so they need to be clipped regularly. Some other dogs (wirehair breeds: Schnauzer, for example), have to have the dead hair which is retained at the follicles by using special trimming blades, or even pulling it out by hand one by one. We recommend a proper care for every breed or kind of fur for keeping it in good conditions: if we clip a wired hair dog, it will develop too much undercoat, and the superficial hair will turn into soft, fluffy and curled one, and in most cases, the original colour will change. Two stripping sessions a year are normally enough to keep the wired hair as is supposed to be: wired hair. Besides, if the retained hair is never pulled out, sooner or later follicle infections or other skin problems will appear. CONTINUED NEXT MONTH

Each year we are pestered by these little “darlings”. Our resident Mossi advertiser, enlightens us below with some alarming facts.

Ever wanted to understand more about this major pest that co-habits your world, then read on.

Youʼre lying in bed on a hot, sticky, humid evening when suddenly you feel an itch, the itch swells into a red bump which wonʼt stop itching. Before you know it there are red bumps, that itch and itch all over your body. By now you are feeling very uncomfortable but donʼt feel too bad because you have been generously feeding a female mosquito or Anophelinae to give her her scientific name. Maybe youʼre concerned about

* There are nearly 3,000 species of mosquito in the world.

infection or interested in dealing with the control of the little blighter or perhaps just curious about the habits and characteristics of your uninvited guests. Well, over the next few issues I will be giving you useful information

Millions of years ago the mosquito was actually three times larger than it is today. Thats a hell of a bite! But itʼs proboscis or what it uses to suck blood was three times smaller. This posed a problem, but as the mosquito evolved over millions of years, it changes to better fit its environment by shrinking

70

and tips on how to understand and hopefully combat the tiny “Vampire” that invades and disrupts your daily life.

* They can lay eggs any where where there is one inch of semi-still water. * Only the female bites!! * The average mosquito bites 5 times a night

to less than three times its original size and also extending its proboscis making it three times longer. They are excellent at adapting to their environment and have dramatically increased in numbers until the present day where there are billions of them on the planet.

A 54 year old woman had a heart attack and was taken to the hospital. While on the operating table she had a near death experience. Seeing God she asked 'Is my time up? 'God said, 'No, you have another 43 years, 2 months and 8 days to live. 'Upon recovery, the woman decided to stay in the hospital and have a face-lift, liposuction, breast implants and a tummy tuck. She even had someone come in and change her hair colour and brighten her teeth! Since she had so much more time to live, she figured she might as well make the most of it. After her last operation, she was released from the hospital. While crossing the street on her way home, she was killed by an ambulance. Arriving in front of God, she demanded, 'I thought you said I had another 43 years? Why didn't you pull me from out of the path of the ambulance?' God replied: 'I didn't blooming recognize you.'
